Take a Walk 09/22/24 - Albany, NY Special Edition
Just a note to the 3 day-one fans/followers of my take a walk commentary series, I have a few posts to catch up on that are dated and slated to be put together as soon as I find the time. But I just wanted to get this special edition out as soon as I could because its fresh and I have the motivation to and this one is short. (And because this is my blog, and I make the rules, and were doing this one first!!)
While I was visiting my friends in Albany, a place I called home for a number of years, I had some time to kill so my old friend and I decided to take a long walk and shoot some photos. :)
Tumblr media
First off we have the Hinckel Brewery building originally built as just the right-most building in 1855, with additions made in subsequent years as the business began to grow to be one of the biggest beer distributors in the Northeast even rivaling Anheuser-Busch and Samuel Adams during the early 1900's.
The original architect is unknown, but to the best of my understanding many of the building's interiors as well as the surrounding building complex have been modernized and incorporated into the @HudsonPark apartment scheme. I wasn't able to find a lot of info on the apartments that exist therein within the apartment complex, and they don't exactly have rave reviews on sites like google and apartments.com.
When we walked into the small inner concrete courtyard underneath the old docking bay in the office building, the vibe was very vacant aside from being locked and then this strange noise I caught of one of the seemingly-annoyed tenants who wasn't happy we were all up in their business. (either that or it was a ghost, give the sound a listen in the last 5 seconds of this video and let me know lol).
-
Then we walked past some of my favorites, that I neglected to get pictures of -_- bc I didn't think I would be making this post, BUT that I'll def be able to get pictures of from my archives/google. I'll throw together a short run through of those real quick and then get to the main event.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Van Ostrande-Radliff House at 48 Hudson Ave, a must see (even if you cant see much) in Albany. This is the oldest standing building in the city, originally built in 1728. Preservation efforts are ongoing to restore it to its former charm, but it remains covered for the time being so as to not fall into further disrepair. I recommend checking out the sick pictures that Historic Albany Foundation has on their website of the current interior.
-
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Down the street is the SUNY Headquarters Building, an old railroad building that served the state capitol under the Delaware & Hudson Railroad Co. Architect Marcus T. Reynolds designed this one, it was originally built as six separate buildings from 1915 on and connected to form one continuous structure, this imposingly beautiful Flemish Gothic building is one of my personal favorites in downtown Albany.
-
Tumblr media
Turning around we see this beautifully ornate neo-classical building at the corner of State St. & Broadway. Originally built as the Albany Trust Company building in 1902, also by architect Marcus T. Reynolds! This building has such a striking facade and the renaissance revival dome is truly an architectural masterpiece (if not bordering on a little gaudy). I was so lucky to find out they had just given it a fresh spruced up paint job when I walked by it! Today it operates as the SUNY Research Foundation building.
-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then juuuust up the street 2 buildings away is BY FAR my favorite little guy in the city (I would treat her so right, please god give me a chance).
This is 63 State St. Being built originally by one of my favorite architects, Russell Sturgis in 1876 for the Mechanics & Farmers Bank. For such a small sliver of a property footprint this building just does so much right with its balance of form and ornament. The turret on the corner is stunningly delicate, as well as the bright red brick to complement the light sandy stone. Not to mention that beautifully ornate third floor circle window. This building changed hands a couple times throughout the centuries but retains the old vault door in the basement as well as the brass fixtures and marble floorings inside that give it quite the stately presence upon entering.
-
Tumblr media
How could I not include the most imposingly large, ornate, stately, balanced (every other adjective I've ever used on this blog...) building in Albany, the state capitol building!? Main architect: Henry Hobson Richardson, along with Leopold Eidlitz, Thomas Fuller, and Isaac G. Perry. Finished in 1899 after 32 years!
I'm going to keep this very brief because we only stopped here briefly on our walk and this building deserves it's own deep dive post at some point anyway. Plus it isn't even the aforementioned "Main Event" of our walk. But the detail in the scrolling on the columns here is absolutely insane. My friend and I were discussing it's architectural style/influences and we weren't completely convinced it falls into any one, Italianate/Neoclassical/Victorian/Georgian/Flemish/Gothic/Spanish influences... the confluence of styles in this design is absolutely masterful. As well as whether one would consider the columns corinthian or not, maybe composite? But just take a look at these bad boys, I would sit and take a full semester's course just on the symbolism sprinkled in and throughout this structure.
Tumblr media
The scrolling is unique on EVERY column and sprinkled with tons of historical imagery and symbolism but they all have the same visual weight and if you weren't paying attention you'd never notice.
-
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you think nothing could compete with the capital building's insanely intricate detail look across the street for it's closest competitor, The State Education Department building and Chancellor Hall at 89 Washington Ave. I think I remember thinking for a long time this was my favorite Albany building for years before discovering the charming old gothic bank building on lower State St.
Spanning a whole city block (a long one) is this building's imposing Greek-revival corinthian colonnade with 36 massive columns along it! Another scale-defying building joining the capitol building at you-have-to-see-it-in-person scale, the columns on this bad boy are comparable to the width of a redwood tree (see the picture of my legs as I lay down between them to get shots of the ceiling).
Originally Built in 1911 by architect Henry Hornbostel, this building has retained it's integrity and intention by functioning as the base of operations for the NY state education system since its completion. Its structure and facade, including the intricate brass lighting fixtures and the beautiful tiling along its exterior, has been kept in immaculate condition and is incredible to look at in person. This is another architectural feat with such minute detailing that I could sit there with an expert for probably weeks just in awe of it's symbols and attention to detail. I sat there for about 20 minutes when we visited it just looking at it and taking its beauty in. This is the type of building that just transports you somewhere else when you really take it in, it could've easily been cherry picked from the acropolis and plopped in upstate New York and you wouldn't question it thats how beautifully true to form it feels in person.
I didn't know I would be making this post in the moment while taking the walk so I don't have a dishonorable mention, but if you've ever been to Albany, NY you know there are far too many of those to ever pick from so I'm going to give myself a pass this time.

Clara Holt Reimagines Ancient Myths and Decorative Traditions in Vivid Ceramic Vessels
Drawing on the long history of Mediterranean ceramics, Italian artist Clara Holt covers the surfaces of vessels, tiles, and tablets with playful, colorful narratives. Inspired by the region’s ancient decorative pottery like the Minoan octopus flask or Greek and Etruscan vase painting, she illustrates references to mythology, nature, customs, and folklore.

Hypothetically…. NPMD Monster High AU……….
Pete: A poltergeist. Peter Geist just wants to be invisible but he’s constantly getting into mischief with his friends that draws too much attention to himself!
Steph: Mummy cause she’s gotta keep family secrets UNDER WRAPS ;) and in MH the DeNiles are also a powerful family so having the Lauters be mummies is just so…
Richie: Freshwater monster!! He wishes he was a Ningen from the western Pacific but actually he’s just from Lake Michigan lol he loves swimming and sushi and you can tell when he’s dehydrated when the blue on his hair starts to turn brown!
Ruth: Frankenstein’s monster. Kinda a given with FrankenRuth. I imagine she’s constantly altering her body parts to try to be as attractive to others as possible. The bolts are on her temples and her headgear attaches to it
Grace: Vampire. It’s funny because she doesn’t get to touch a cross AND Angela is Italian so no garlic for Grace :(
Max: A Jekyll and Hyde type creature. I imagine his Jekyll side is the Max we see in the Waylon place, and The Jägerman persona is the Hyde, and the Hyde half is easily triggered when he’s overwhelmed or intimidated and is hard to control. Not necessarily kept at bay without music like Jackson and Holt, but hey what are you gonna do, amiright?
Brenda and Stacy are definitely werecats that roll in the same pack, Jason is a fellow vampire, and Kyle is a werewolf which is part of the reason Max wouldn’t let him date Brenda
Talk about being a literal monster lmao

reason under the cut!
Listen Italian about the fact that they both lived. Shiro was alone as the human adult in space so long and he lost so much even in the intro he automatically protects Matt and then we find out how much he would protect him later. This man is so alone and has no peers only those he is looking after and one man who is years and years older than him. Then they manage to find him they find a person he wasn't even sure was alive who is around his age.a peer somone who has experienced some of what he has, who has an idea of what he's been going through and grew up on the same planet as him and clearly shares his love of space.
Then on Matt's side he was protected this man made it clear he would protect him with his life how wonderful and terrible it would be to love someone who you think didn't love you in the same way and watch them destroy themselves to try to protect you and your family. Then you get back and not only did he protect you and your father from fighting battles you were never prepared to but he protected your little sister who was crazy enough to follow you up and the man is still as kind but he's in pain and he's alone and so you let him rely on you because of course you cared before but now how could you not be fully in love with the man you were falling for who was fighting to be himself and protect these kids because they are young adults but they are learning who is so alone and traumatized but still holding on to his kindness.
As well as that I like to think about how much it would annoy pidge as well as how funny it would be for pidge and keith not to be able to escape their siblings being gross and in love in space. Or on the flip side how funny them trying to be subtle and sneak around with it would be.

The Taiga files
Tumblr media
Taiga likes sweet foods. She has a record of eating over 500 chocolate bars without gaining much weight. This has to do with her high metabolism levels and muscle density.
Taiga has a hypnotizing voice. Most of the women in her family have something called "Canto delle Sirene" (Song of the Sirens). Many who are aware of the Sogno bloodline (Taiga's mother's maiden name) believe that Maria Sogno (a ghostly woman who dwells in Italy's waters) was a siren and/or succubus.
Taiga will wake up in the middle of the night just to talk to Douma. She enjoys his company and admires his strength.
Tumblr media
Taiga admiring Douma while he duels with Akaza.
Similar to Muzan, Taiga is very open about her favoritism. (But she's much nicer about it) Whenever Taiga goes to the uppermoon meetings, she rarely talks to anybody but Douma and Kokushibo.
Taiga accidentally called Kokushibo "Dad" once, she was embarrassed about it for weeks and did her best to avoid him by hiding behind Douma.
It was literally that one episode of Brooklyn 99 when Peralta calls Captain Holt "dad"
Taiga barely acknowledges Akaza, constantly getting his name wrong and looking down at him (just like Muzan is with literally anybody 💀). She's only polite to him because of how Douma considers him a "friend"
Tumblr media
“What are you, some sort of clown? What's with the shitty tattoos and the pink hair? You look stupid.”
Taiga is the polar opposite when she sees Douma. She acts much sweeter with the blonde more than anybody else. Obviously she respects Kokushibo. (and clearly sees him as family)
Tumblr media
“You're so amazing, Douma! Your blood art is so pretty. I wish mine was like that!”
“Too bad the others can't amount to your talent” *stares directly at Akaza with a shit-eating grin*
This obviously pisses a lot of the other moons off. (except for Koku, Nakime, and Muzan, they just tune it out like mature adults)
Taiga can only cook Italian foods, and even then she struggles with it. She can make hella good wine, though!
She often gives Douma the wine to bathe in.
Taiga's love language is giving gifts and physical affection, she loves to show how much she cares through actions. She's no good at verbal affirmations, but that won't stop her from calling a certain blonde cunt the most perfect being alive.
When Taiga refers to Douma as perfect, she isn't talking about the whole god-whisperer bullshit. She's talking about him as a person.
In a nutshell, she's down bad. Down very, very bad.
Tumblr media
Taiga really, really likes animals. She's always been able to communicate well with many different kinds of critters, from giant grizzly bears to tiny weasels.
Taiga has often brought small rodents like possums and raccoons to the Eternal Paradise cult, much to the members dismay.
She actually kept a pet mouse named Algernon, which freaked everyone out.
When Douma was informed of this by terrified cultists, he burst out laughing. Never would he have expected Taiga to do something like that!
Tumblr media
When Taiga first began to work undercover, she took a Demon Slayer uniform from one of Doma's midnight snacks and followed a certain checkered haori to HQ, where she crashed into a hashira meeting Die Hard style.
Tanjiro had a feeling he was being followed, but had no idea who it was. Taiga is good at hiding in plain sight, so he could only rely on his sense of smell.
She literally broke through a window and flipped her hair in the cuntiest way possible
Kagaya had no idea about Taiga working with Muzan, but the hashira (specifically Shinobu) had a bad feeling about her.
When she got there, she ended up being recognized by Kagaya, who knew her parents from back in the day. (A very long story)
Shinobu was the first one to question her, asking questions about her origins and other stuff.
Taiga simply turned to her and looked at her with the most disrespectful ass response 💀🙏
“Who gave you permission to speak to me? I don't remember asking for your opinion, you disgusting creature. Get out of my sight, you're making me ill.”
Tumblr media
Before anything could actually happen, Kagaya the Chad spoke up.
Shinobu, much to everyone's shock, actually pulled out her sword and tried to attack the strange girl out of pure rage.
This is an ability both Muzan and Taiga have. They can manipulate human emotions with a single gaze or phrase. That's why Shinobu got so angry all of a sudden. No human is completely immune to it.
Taiga (finally) offered her "services" to Kagaya. She said she knew secrets about the uppermoons and Muzan that could aid them in the war.
He asked Taiga in literally the kindest way possible and without a trace of anger to not antagonize Shinobu. Surprisingly, Taiga listened and piped down.
Kagaya, after careful consideration, agreed.
Tumblr media
Taiga got up, pulled a batman and left in a dramatic yet awesome way.
As she was walking back, two unimportant demon slayers had found her and tried to rob. (and potentially assault her)
Tanjiro had been going on another mission when he spotted this. He recognized Taiga's scent and tried to help her.
But he wasn't needed..
When Taiga came back to the cult, she was immediately pulled into a hug by a "worried" Douma.
Her soul left her body. All her brain could think of was "Man tiddies Man tiddies Man tiddies Man tiddies Man tiddies-"
Luckily, Douma let her go before she passed out.
Being the little shit he is, Douma pointed out her red face.
Taiga immediately replied with "it was hot outside 😃" even though it was snowing. Fucking dumbass-
Before Douma could unintentionally push her buttons some more, Nakime teleported a letter to her. It read:
"Send me all the information you gathered. I don't care how you do it, but it must be done quickly."
Muzan can't read Taiga's mind like he can with his uppermoons, he can only sense her emotions and has to guess what she's thinking. (Which pisses him off a lot)

Vila's got branches growing out of her back instead of antlers. I confused vily and mavky, which are their ukrainian counterparts and sometimes have hollow backs. Hollow-backed fairies also exist in most parts of central Europe, and sometimes it's rather a wooden or moss-covered back, like the north-italian anguane or the german mother Holt ( in Diel Breull's description of the Venusberg from the early 17th century)

pidge headcanon!
It was Pidge's birthday and I didn't do nothing... SO I GUESS I CAN WRITE A FEW PIDGE HC!
The Paladins often witnessed arguments among the Holts, especially between Pidge and Matt or Pidge and Colleen. For example, during lunch together, Matt joined them. He teased Pidge by calling her "his little baby tiny sister" and treated her like a baby in front of her friends. Needless to say, he got punched right in the guts. And as she punched him, her parents passed by and screamed in harmony, "KATIE!" In response, she simply raised her shoulder and said, "What? I was simply giving CPR to that old man..."
The Paladins have a group chat, and Pidge frequently sends random pictures and messages because she finds it amusing. It could be a picture of her forehead or something silly like her and Bae Bae covered in mud. Sometimes, she also sends pictures of Matt sleeping, or once, she sent a picture of Matt and her with glittery face masks on (she forced him to do it).
She loves peanut butter so much that as a kid, she used to take the peanut butter pot in her room and to hide it to eat it ENTIRELY at night.
Her biggest fear is her mother... (ironically)
One time, she wanted to make fly a small plane that she had built... She went on the roof to do it. The plane did fly and so did she. (She fell down the roof and lended in a huge bush full of flowers that she was allergic to not a huge allergie, just irritated her skin... Ho! And she broke her arm.) Colleen laughed ( when they were at the hospital and the doctors told her that she was fine!)
Also once, shut down the whole city's wifi... Lance remembers that day very well! (Even tho he didn't know Pidge by the time) he was watching the last episode of his show and suddenly, NO WIFI. If he today learned that it was her fault, he would probably act very dramatically in front of her like: "HOW COULD YOU?!!?" *Falls on the ground dramatically*.
Pidge was always doing risky stuffs and she was always taking Matt with her... They were always getting grounded.
SHE ONCE HAD A BUZZ CUT. BECAUSE SHE PUT GLUE IN HER HAIR. IMPOSSIBLE TO TAKE IT OUT... (She was 4)
Pidge got Baebae for her birthday... They were ALWAYS together... Sleeping together, eating together, BREATHING TOGETHER... Baebae is her best friend.
Well, pet best friend... Before Voltron, Pidge didn't have a lot of friends... I would say she had friends but probably 2 or something... I headcanon that she knew a girl and some times, they would sit and gossip a bit... This is the actual only female friend she had before Allura and they we're doing many stuffs together but then she moved to another country, somewhere.... And then there was a guy... A tall guy and he is probably the gayest man alive🤔 they know each other since kindergarten and their parents are good friends... These are some OCs I have, im maybe going to draw them.
Pidge used to have a crush on a guy guy from the high school's football team... She never told him but it was a quick crush... (She was 11... he was 17.)
She also used to have a crush on Shiro when she was 13... Shiro knew but never told her... (Matt told Shiro lmao).
Pidge loves animals and animals love her. (Her friends call her a Disney princess.........)
Pidge used to enjoy having long nails, that was before war! She now always cut them.
Pidge doesn't have a voluminous breast, but she binds (she started when she had to prentend to be a guy and felt more confortable with her binder and then stopped after the war.)
same as the nails, Pidge loved her long hair! you can see it in episode 5 season 1: when she hcut heer hair, she hesitate and doesn't seem to actually want it... later, she liked her short haircut, but she would always prefer and miss her short hair...
At home, Colleen speaks Italian ( in the Atlas too, which was confusing to the paladins)
tell me if you'd like more of these!!!

The career of the actor Andre Braugher, who has died of lung cancer aged 61, was benchmarked by two performances in police dramas a generation apart. In the groundbreaking drama Homicide: Life on the Street, from 1993 until 1999, he played Detective Frank Pembleton, whose drive immediately made him the anchor of an impressive ensemble cast led by Yaphet Kotto and Ned Beatty. He drew a younger audience with the comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013-21) as Captain Ray Holt, who takes over a chaotic homicide squad and whose intensity again makes him the heart of the show.
Braugher’s deep, resonant voice and seemingly effortless control drew the respect of all he worked with. David Simon, creator of Homicide and The Wire, said: “I’ve worked with a lot of wonderful actors. I’ll never work with one better.” His classical training, at the Juilliard School in New York, made him a regular at the Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park, and indeed his portrayal of Henry V in 1996 won him an Obie (the off-Broadway equivalent of the Tony awards).
He brought the projection of the stage to the small screen. Pembleton was the master of “the Box”, or the interrogation room. He explained to his rookie partner in Homicide (played by Kyle Secor), it was “salesmanship … as silver tongued and thieving as ever moved used cars, Florida swamp land or Bibles. But what I am selling is a long prison sentence.” He dominated those small scenes, but the episode Subway, with Vincent D’Onofrio as a character pushed between subway trains, who will die once the trains are separated, was a two-hander whose intensity might have come from the stage of Beckett, Pinter or Mamet.
In Brooklyn Nine-Nine, as Holt, he played it straight in two senses. The adage of comedy being funniest when played straight gained resonance from Braugher’s ability to show the audience with a gesture or line-reading that he, like you, got the joke. But Holt is also gay. His gayness is never an issue, except as motivation for his progress within the police. It was as if Pembleton were stepping into Kotto’s “Gee” Giardello, a black man with an Italian father who was determined to rise in a white-dominated department.
This drive reflected Braugher’s own background. In the tough neighbourhood of Austin, on Chicago’s West Side, both his parents worked for the government; his father, Floyd, was a heavy equipment operator for the state of Illinois, and his mother, Sally, worked for the US Postal Service. He recalled he might have “pretended I was hard and tough and not square”, but he won scholarships to the Jesuit St Ignatius College prep and then to study mathematics at Stanford University, California. After walking into a student production of Hamlet, and playing Claudius, he decided he wanted to act.
Another scholarship took him to Juilliard. He graduated in 1988 and almost immediately was cast in a TV revival of Kojak, as his assistant. His first film role came in Glory (1989); he was so impressive as the educated Thomas Searles, forced to serve as a private soldier in the all-black regiment commanded by his white friend, that Hollywood came calling, but the parts were standard stereotyical roles. His father had questioned how a black actor would make a living, and Braugher later explained: “I’d rather not work than do a part I’m ashamed of.”
He played the lead in a TV movie, The Court-Martial of Jackie Robinson (1990), playing Robinson, the first African-American player in major league baseball, who earlier in the 1940s, as a US army lieutenant, had refused to ride in the back of a segregated bus; and appeared in another TV film, The Tuskegee Airmen (1995). He was an egotistical actor in Spike Lee’s Get On the Bus (1996), about the Million Man March on Washington DC the year before. In 1998 he won his first Emmy award for playing Pembleton; he was nominated 11 times, and won his second in 2006 for his role in the miniseries Thief.
After Homicide, he starred as a doctor in Gideon’s Crossing (2000-01), as a cop in Hack (2002-04), as a car dealer in the comedy-drama Men of a Certain Age (2009-11) and as the captain of a submarine which goes on the run after he refuses to obey orders to fire nuclear missiles in Last Resort (2012-13). He had another series of remarkable two-handers in a recurring role as Hugh Laurie’s psychiatrist in House, was a defense attorney in episodes of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, and voiced Governor Woodchuck Coodchuck-Berkowitz in the animated comedy BoJack Horseman.
He made the most of supporting roles in films such as Primal Fear (as Richard Gere’s investigator), Poseidon (captain of the sinking liner), Salt (as the US secretary of defense) and most notably as a New York Times editor in She Said (2022), covering the Harvey Weinstein scandal. He also starred in 10,000 Black Men Named George (2002), the story of the unionisation of Pullman railway porters, who were always called “George” by passengers.
Braugher admitted that his career “could have been larger, but it would have been at the expense of my own life”. He lived in suburban New Jersey with his wife, the actor Ami Brabson (who played Pembleton’s wife in Homicide). He said he wanted his three sons, Michael, Isaiah and John Wesley, raised in a “true context”, away from being a movie star’s offspring in Hollywood.
He is survived by his wife and sons, his brother, Charles, and his mother.

You know what is also weird about lance and cold in general? The names! Like I don't doubt that there are Cubans with some scottish ancestors but McClain can't be a very common name in Cuba. Same with Pidge, like that book they released is like 'oh yeah she's italian btw' ummm Kathryn Holt is not a very Italian name 🤨
They got away with Keith by just not stating his human halfs ethnicity at all
So Shiro is the only one with a name that makes cultural sense. Did they come up with their ethnicities after the show started???
Also 😳🍆 damn Cuba a lot bigger and longer on my map than I remembered...
i’m loving this energy babes but the names came from the original voltron franchise i believe 😭

Kidge headcanon n.18
When Keith went to the Holt house for asking their permission to marry Pidge, he espected the same speech of when he had started dating her (Like treat her like a princess, don't even hurt her...), instead Sam and Colleen asked him something very strange.
"Single or double modulation?"
He froze... He didn't do nothing about modulating arguments, so he answered with a italian phrase that learned from Pidge.
"I...I... non lo so...?"
What can I say? Keith could marry her...
