NIGHTLY, HAWKTER, GENJAR (Dark/Flying) & Mega GENJAR (Dark/Fighting)
Convergent evolution line of GHASTLY, HAUNTER, GENGAR & Mega GENGAR.
They are nocturnal birds with the ability to imitate the cries of other pokemon, and even sounds made by humans, in order to attract unsuspecting prey into the dark forest and attack them by surprise.
They are mainly inspired by Nightjars, also known as nighthawks or frogmouths
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
GENJAR is also inspired in Owlbears from D&D
Tumblr media
Mega GENJAR is based on the defensive posture owls will take when they feel threatened, ruffling their feathers and trying to look bigger and more intimidating

"Hey, hey, hey, not so fast buddy. I SWEAR you really really wanna see something... cool and unusual. Something different... Not these dreary landscapes around here. Well, you know... something. Come on, you won't regret it, I promise. Just don't tell those guys in the masks."

Gou Tanabe x H.P. Lovecraft
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anybody else collecting these? I find these books really convenient for reading during a plane ride or train ride. I like that they're small enough to carry anywhere.
Currently, I’m reading The Shadow Over Innsmouth and plan to purchase The Call of Cthulhu once it's released. The art is mind-blowing. Gou Tanabe’s ability to capture Lovecraft’s cosmic horror through his illustrations is unmatched. His use of shading and contrast brings an eerie and atmospheric quality to the stories that really draws you in. That said, I do think the size of the books doesn’t always do the art justice - some details are so fine and intricate that they get lost in the smaller format. But like I mentioned, the compact size makes them perfect for reading on the go.
Tumblr media
It's well known that Lovecraft was a big influence on Junji Ito, and I've been fascinated with his works for a while. I even bought a full omnibus of all his stories. However, with English being my second language and since I’m also more of a visual person, I prefer seeing horror in graphic form.
I still read horror novels - I own tons of Stephen King and other great horror finds, but when it comes to cosmic and body horror, I prefer seeing it illustrated. Tanabe’s adaptations are perfect for this because they blend the unsettling and strange atmosphere of Lovecraft’s writing with detailed, haunting visuals.

My favorite canonical wraith, the most excellent Amil ibn-Shoudri or simply Dr. Shudder. I literally fell in love with this character when reading Guildbook: Haunters and that love hasn't gone away in years… So when there was an option to make cards for the zine I mentioned earlier, without hesitation, I decided to offer mine with a haunted crush It might be worth doing something else like this in the present tense. But it's very hard to decide to fanart when the original art is incredibly good and gorgeous. I love him so much…

It may be obvious from my recent posts, but I think a great and underused trope is our protagonists finding some powerful artifact in the ruins of an ancient civilization.
They use it to lay waste to their enemies a couple times, but then later they finish translating the writings from those ruins and it's, "This is a powerful artifact that we found in the ruins of some ancient civilization. Our rulers plan to use it against our enemies but maybe we shouldn't?" Just multiple sequential apocalypse macguffin.

Pokemon Card of the Day #3139: Dark Haunter (Neo Destiny)
Tumblr media
You wouldn't expect something like Dark Haunter to be good. It wasn't like it took hits that well or did much damage. Its entire goal was to make discarded Basic and Baby Pokemon go back to the opponent's Bench with a tiny bit of damage. This actually wasn't that useful in the old version of the Rocket-On format since Slowking wrecked the Trainers any decent use of this attack would rely on. The modern take on the format has things as if they were correctly translated, and suddenly things like Dark Crobat paired with Hyper Devolution Spray and Super Scoop Up could be used. Dark Haunter could pull Baby Pokemon into play, and those Pokemon could hit the Bench with Pokemon Powers when evolving. Suddenly, this one attack was looking really promising.
The stats here were pretty odd. 50 HP wasn't going to impress anyone, especially on a Stage 1. It wasn't a guaranteed loss against a decent number of things (Steelix had to flip heads to KO, for example, and Kingdra decks needed a second turn), but it did mean Dark Haunter was vulnerable to either Feraligatr and wasn't too fond about facing Crobat or either Blaine's Arcanine or Magcargo either. There was, at least, no Weakness here. There was also a Fighting Resistance, neutralizing any Tyrogue and meaning Giovanni's Machamp and Donphan would have a tougher time to say the least. Dark Haunter, like all of the best deck it could contribute to, could retreat for free. This made it very easy to go out to your own Cleffa if needed in a specific scenario. You'd often want to pull up a Pokemon when possible, but if low on important Trainers, retreating could indeed be the better play.
Call Back was the entire reason to use Dark Haunter. A Psychic Energy was all that was needed here. If the opponent's Bench wasn't full and if there was a Baby or Basic Pokemon in the opponent's discard pile, you got to move one of those Pokemon to their Bench and put a damage counter on it. This didn't seem like much on the surface. What it did do was make Cleffa, a card in every deck, a legitimate target. Filling up a Bench while not having any Baby Pokemon simply wasn't happening at the time, and Dark Haunter could be used to just recycle the Cleffa over and over to get Prizes off of it. Dark Crobat would be used to place damage counters, scooping and devolving to get multiple uses out of it over the course of the game. This strategy, which only worked in a game without the threat of Slowking, could be quite devastating to anything not running Trainer lock, though it was by no means unstoppable and anyone that got a Dark Vileplume up was probably in good shape. Doing that, however, could be easier said than done.
Surround did 20 damage for 2 Psychic Energy. A heads flip also put the Defending Pokemon to Sleep, while tails meant it couldn't retreat. Tails actually hit the more reliable effect, but it wasn't like Dark Haunter would trap things exactly when it wanted every time. This wasn't great and was by no means like Murkrow.
Dark Haunter's job was simply to enable Dark Crobat to pick off weak Pokemon. In the errata version of Rocket-On, this combo was one of the better options, being quite scary as long as it had decent Trainer flip luck. It had quite a few chances to get it right, at least, which helped it out. It was vulnerable to bad luck and really did not like seeing Dark Vileplume show up, so it was going to have its share of problems. When things did even somewhat fall into place, Dark Haunter was able to help claim plenty of Prizes, and you had to know how this deck worked to have success in that one format.

10 deaths are a tragedy. 10.000 deaths are a statistic. a comment about how the human mind can t percept things too big for its small primal brain. when you think of 10 people you think of Jhon and Emily and Bob. when you think of 10k deaths you think of something random. a statistic
Indeed. I think who put it best was the character "Konrad Curze" also known as the "Night Haunter" and Primarch of the Night Lord space marine legions from the Warhammer 40k universe. His philosophies of governance and of the human condition are still something I find myself fascinated with even to this day since I first found the quote in the novel "Lord of the Night". (A must read if you have the time). The quote is: "These humans, their imaginations are strong. Kill a thousand men and they will hate you. Kill a million men, and they will queue to face you. But kill a single man, and they will see monsters and devils in every shadow. Kill a dozen men and they will scream and wail in the night, and they will feel fear, not hatred.
This is the way of obedience my sons. They are panicky, gossiping beasts, these humans. It serves us to allow them to be so."
