All For The Bit

okay so, bear with me here

When Trigun came into the world the typical shonen protagonist was the loudmouth cheery guy who shouted a lot about friendship, generally had a lot of feelings and wasn't too bright but they had HEART

And this was kind of Vash's Bit in the manga and '98 anime. This is the role he presented himself in. Not an entirely false personality, often exaggerating his own traits, but still a deliberate choice. He's modeled after the harmless, nonthreatening Loudmouth.

Now we come to present day. Now the prevalent shonen protag tends to be The Wimp. Soft-spoken, the ultimate doormat, essentially decent and kind but weak-willed. Earnest, but no one takes them seriously. Eager to please. Belittles themself.

Vash has updated The Bit. He now presents himself as The Wimp because that is the common type of protagonist in recent times. That is the type of protagonist viewers will be most familiar with. He's not like 90s Vash because he is 20s Vash, he's this generation's Vash.

I have no idea if Orange did this deliberately but I think it's cool. It's a new show made by a new generation of creators who want to tell new stories about characters they love.

I love LSH so much it’s genuinely one of the funniest events in the entire game but I think one of my favorite things is toya getting so mad at akito (because he’s largely unrepentant about failing) & then when he finds out his older brother figure failed a class he literally does not give a fuck. Zero reaction. I know this is because he knows tsukasa has already had his 46 allotted Fits about it and will be hitting the books hard but imagining akito’s face when he realizes toya is not concerned abt tsukasa’s studying and is only being a hard ass about his studying is so funny to me. Tsukasa could go “yeah I’m just gonna cram for this exam” & toya would go “I believe in you tsukasa senpai” but if akito said that exact same thing Toya would be So Pissed.

I’ve been horrendously obsessed with @cecameron ‘s Wink from Wimp Witch. He’s a just so toony, and smug, and a total asshole 💕💗♥️. I have the worst taste in people I swear. I thought it’d be cute if I put rabbit ear antenna on him to see his reaction. I just have so many questions about him and so much I wanna know about him and I neeeed this to learn more!! Wimp Witch over all is just so sweet, and fun, and I love it so much!! It’s got a mature Paper Mario vibe. But heads up it’s for mature audiences.

Speaking of mature audiences, I’ve also jumped on the Jambee Beaux bandwagon from AphroDesia. The content well may not be as dense, but again it’s those smarmy types who get me. And Jambee is such a charmer. It’s also from SnaccPop Studios, so look them up! They have more stuff too!!

magisterium does not feel real. i read the first book because i didn't know what to read and wow i loved it! but the joy i had was short lived because i read it in a month. so uh. yea.

ive had cyberpunk thoughts all week. nd since i cant play (it messed my tv screen up. cries.) i decided to try and. character train with little ficlet thoughts. and ive been lamenting for a bit but i have a thing.

...The room echoed with his footsteps. He walked around, looking for someone. His eyes couldn't see but a foot in front of him. "Hey.. hey, where am I? This isn't funny. If you're playing some joke on me, its not fucking fu-" He was cut off as he called out into the echo. He had bumped into something. As he stumbled back a bit, he tried to grab onto it. Hands pulled him closer. Two of them in a hug of sorts.

...It was Jackie. But- wait, no. No, Jackie's dead now. Jackie's gone. His body's gone. He shouldn't be here. But V couldn't care about how this was happening, or why, when, what, who. He was absolutely stunned to feel something familiar again. Everything felt like a blur of grey and red since he learned about the chip. When he learned that if he doesnt act fast, and with urgency, he'll cease to be himself. He'll be piloted by a dead man with a second chance.

He needed this. No words are spoken, but he can't seem to let go. He can't get over it. It hurts his heart everytime he thought about it. How he fought with him, how he got snappy and irritated just before his death, how he couldn't get him the help he needed in time. How, if he had been faster, if everything had been more tactical, Jackie might still be here. T-Bug might still be in her apartment. This chip may've never embedded into him. They'd all be rich and happy together.

But as soon as he felt happy, he was jolted awake by someone. "Get up. I'm not waiting for you." ...Johnny. He rolled over with a groan to see him standing beside the bed, cigarette in hand. V felt like his lungs were filling with smoke, coughing. He hated that. "Move on. He's dead. Bein a fuckin crybaby isn't gonna make him magically come back." Johnny spoke with anger and bluntness. He was such an asshole. "Ugh. You ever have a friend die in front of you? It's... It's fuckin depressing, Johnny." V's voice was quiet and tired. "I don't do friends. Get in the way. Now get up, and get dressed. We have shit to do."

There's an analysis to be made about the LL series and how the writers design characters you're meant to hate, and how the way they're designed indicates the type of role they're meant to play and whether you're supposed to hate them but realize their nuance as interesting characters or smash their head down a pike
