we had a chef MC headcanon, now how about M6 when MC made them a meal but it tasted just downright horrible and MC is just kinda oblivious to it, asking M6 with the brightest, most innocent smile "Do you like it?"
i hope you have fun writing this if you do choose this humble request
- 🌼
The Arcana HCs: When MC is a terrible chef
~ this reminds me of the time when teenaged me combined old rice, hot dog chunks, cold broccoli, and buffalo sauce (in one bowl!) for a late-night snack. thank you for the giggles this gave me, yellow flower friend, let's hope I pay them forward! - brainrot ~
-- to set the scene --
Somehow it's been one of those weeks when everything in your food supply begins to reach its end or expiration date at the same time. You know your regular grocery shopping is tomorrow, and you have an extensive list prepared, but dinner is up to you tonight and you don't have anything comprehensive planned. It looks like it's time for your famous "everything but the kitchen sink" stew. You've only made this in the past when it was just you in the shop and you were still figuring out how to cook, but you remember it being fairly edible.
(Continued below the cut)
You get some beans boiling (there hasn't been time to soak them), add a cup or two of vinegar to soften them faster, dice the not-molded parts of a tomato and onion you found at the bottom of a sack, and rinse the slime off of some wilted greens before throwing them in. You're craving something spicy, so you dump in the rest of your chili sauce, but when the steam makes you tear up you scrape out the rest of the mayonnaise to even it out. It was starting to smell funky anyways. Your hand slips when you add the salt, so you pour in some honey to counteract it, and in a final burst of inspiration, you plop in two bananas that have gotten too mushy to eat. The signature suspicious scum of your original dish is just floating to the top of your soup when your beloved returns, hungry from a day of work.
Julian
Too happy to see you to notice the poison on the stove at first
The words die in his throat when he does. Tell him it's a potion. Tell him it's a curse. Tell him it's a prank. Don't tell him, don't tell him it's ... it's dinner, isn't it?
He watches you happily ladle a generous scoop of your curdled concoction into his bowl and gulps. He loves you. He's got this. He will eat your food, he will tell you it's delicious, or he will die trying
He's starting to get caught up in the poetry of it as he sits down across from you. Like a lamb to the slaughter, accepting the sweet taste of death from his beloved's cruel hand - stew isn't supposed to be sweet, oh god why is it sweet
But for his darling's delight, he will overcome -
"Julian, is everything alright? You look like you're about to go on stage."
"Oh, is ah - is that what I look like, my dear?" He's pale and sweating at this point, poorly disguising the tremble in his hand as he brings his second glass of water to his lips
"It's my stew, isn't it?" you dolefully lift a gelatinous spoonful and watch it fall back into your bowl with a sickening squelch. "I remember it tasting weird, but not this weird ..."
"No, no!" His voice cracks against his will as he sees your sadness as proof of his failure. "It's delightful, delicious - worthy of the gods, even." You hear him mumble a prayer for forgiveness under his breath and drop your spoon
"I know when you're acting, Julian."
"Ah, so I - so I am. You know -" he stands abruptly, his chair falling behind him in his haste. "I just remembered that Pasha invited us for dinner tonight. Shall we?"
He's never been so happy to see you walk out his front door
Asra
They can smell it as soon as they walk into the shop and are immediately concerned. That is the smell of death. Why is the smell of death in your shop oh no - "MC? MC, where are you?"
"I'm upstairs!" Thank the patrons, you're okay
Then again, maybe you're not, considering how perfectly comfortable you seem standing over whatever monstrosity is releasing toxic vapors into the atmosphere. Is that ... soup?
Color him intrigued. He's doing his best to hide a laugh and find a way to ask what enabled you to create something so terrifying out of simple kitchen ingredients without insulting you
"So, is this recipe an MC original?"
"Yep!" You smile at him cheerfully, seemingly oblivious to the stomach-churning way that the chunks plop from the soup spoon into their bowl. "I always make this when we're running low."
"You've made this before?" They're starting to get concerned again
"Just a few times, when you were on a trip. Do you like it?"
He takes a bite, so intrigued by the way it seems to wriggle down his throat that he tries a second. "I've never had anything like it."
"What do you think of the mayonnaise? It smelled a little funky ..."
We have mayonnaise? They wonder, but on the outside they're still smiling. "It certainly adds to the experience. Is this ... banana?"
"Yeah, it seemed too mushy to eat on its own, so ..."
Asra sets down his miraculously empty bowl with a loving smile. "MC, you shouldn't have to do the cooking so often. Let me help out more often."
Nadia
She doesn't know how it's come to this. Nobody knows how it's come to this, when the Palace kitchen is kept fully stocked and there are chefs available at all hours
But you had said that you missed your home cooking, and she had given you full access to the backup kitchen to do as you pleased, and - ah, the only things kept in there are leftovers
That would explain the stench
Speaking of, her respect for your resilience has reached new heights. How you've been able to survive on your own is a mystery to her. Please tell her this isn't how you ate for three years -
But you seem as deathly serious as the radioactive sludge that's churning in her fine china like a lava lamp, and she realizes that this is going to be a labor of love. She must eat her fill and do so with elegance
You watch her bring the daintiest (read: tiniest) spoon of slime to her lips, pausing to test the aroma before setting her jaw and putting it in her mouth
Oh, look at that, she's already eaten her fill
"MC, my darling, what do you say to an evening walk? It seems I haven't the appetite to dine at this moment, how about a stroll around the palace gardens? The night is still young."
She's relieved at how easily you agree, deeply concerned by the fact that you've already finished half of your bowl, and eager to get you out of the palace so that the maids can make dinner disappear
She's going to lose sleep for the next three months about whether or not she should be honest about what happened to your soup
There's now a bald patch in the grass behind the kitchen that hasn't been able to grow anything in three years. There's a rumor that stepping on it will release a stench so foul that you won't be able to eat for twenty-four hours afterwards
Muriel
He's not too worried. He used to eat spoiled food out of the trash heaps all the time as a kid, he's sure he remembers how
But he's a little surprised that said rotting food is being actively cooked. By you. Seemingly in a choice made of your own free will
He wasn't expecting ... this, but a quick glance around the hut makes it clear to him that nothing terrible has happened, that you seem perfectly sane, and that you don't think anything's wrong
Well, you seem to trust your cooking, and he certainly trusts you, so ...
He side eyes Inanna's dramatic performance of whimpering and pawing at her nose, eventually turning to let her back out of the hut as you serve your bowls with a smile
He takes a glance at his serving as you dig in. Asra still talks about the time he ate a whole chili pepper without flinching - he can do this. He picks up his spoon, scoops up a jiggling chunk, and eats
You're a little surprised at how quickly his bowl disappears. You're not really enjoying your food yourself, but you're not going to judge his strange enthusiasm
"Muriel? If you're still hungry, there's more on the fire ..."
"I'm fine." He's getting out of his habit of depriving food of himself, but in this case, refusing to eat is a personal kindness
He drinks several glasses of water while you finish your dinner, asking you about your day and trying not to grimace at every silent burp that pulls the aftertaste back into his mouth
Inanna buries the rest after the two of you go to bed. Nobody knows how she managed it without opposable thumbs, but everything is possible for a wolf desperate to preserve her nose
Portia
Her brother might be an award-winning actor, but her flair for the dramatic only goes as far as silly little bits designed to make people laugh and pretending that she isn't about to punch somebody
She is a woman who knows her mind, her heart, her strength, and her limits. This is a limit, and she is doing her best to pass it
You can tell right away that she doesn't want to eat what you've made. You've never seen her smile look so uncomfortably tight, and you certainly didn't miss the way her stomach heaved when she leaned over the pot to take a closer look at your creation
But she's insistent on going through with your evening, even steering you towards the kitchen table and serving the bowls herself. She tries so very hard to mask the look of revulsion on her face when different chunks of stew jiggle at different frequencies
She places your bowls on the table and lifts her spoon, waiting for you to take the first bite in the hopes that your eyes will be opened and you'll insist on eating something else
No such luck. You're two spoonfuls in, so in the spirit of keeping an open mind, she loads up her utensil and shoves it in her mouth
You weren't expecting to be sprayed by the choke that seizes her, but sitting across from her puts you in the splatter zone and you're quick to give her your napkin and ask if she's okay
She nods weakly, looking slightly green. "MC," she says, "you are definitely stronger than I imagined." She takes another look at the gelatinous blobs on her table. "Stronger than you need to be."
She dusts off her hands and practically drags you out of the cottage. "Let's eat out tonight! My treat. And I just had the best idea for our next date night - we should take cooking lessons together!"
Lucio
He notices Mercedes and Melchior acting up on the way back to your campsite, but doesn't have any idea why until he gets a whiff and - oh, that is nasty
Some kind of skunk jacked up on magic must have done that, never fear, MC! He's here to save the day now - what do you mean that's dinner? That is not dinner. Dinner is not supposed to smell like that
He's not sparing a second to consider manners or acting. Lucio calls it like he sees it, and all he sees is poison
"MC, do we have to? It smells so bad, look at it MC, just loo - bleugh - no I'm not being dramatic! The smell made me gag for real, watch!"
And he leans over the pot again, just to take a deep lungful and subsequently let out the most visceral gagging belch you've ever witnessed
"See? It's bad, it's really bad, and I don't want to eat it! Why are you being so mean to me, MC?"
To be honest, you're not particularly excited to eat it either, but it's all you've got until you make it to the next town tomorrow, so you tell him as much as his pout slowly deepens
"Fine, I'll do it. I guess it can't be that bad if you made it -" He watches the way it slops into his bowl and gulps. "I take it back."
Sure it's a little spicier and clumpier and saltier and sickly sweeter than you planned, but you're able to stomach it just fine
And to your surprise, Lucio can too. He complains loudly the whole time, but his whining somehow grants him the ability to eat three full bowls
"See, you ate so much of it!"
"Well of course!" he puffs out his chest proudly. "I'm the best. At least it's not as bad as what we had in the army. But - MC?" he looks at you with pleading eyes, "please don't make that again."

Frank Frankly's Character Analysis !TW! Metal Health, M4ss4cr3, death
Eddie got his analysis so of course his husband would have one! (Fun Fact! despite Wally being the main character, Frank shows up in 18 outta 53 images!) fun facts outta the way, HERE WE GOOOO!!!
He likes Honesty and Truth - quote from his bio "He enjoys being frank, even if it means being Frank" i love this quote on his bio and this is the main reason they're my kin.
2. Frank is an Asperger? - Although he is confirmed to be autistic by @partycoffin , his personality makes him an Asperger (My tito has Aspergers so i know the gist of it). His official Bio points out his Bookworm Tendency, and his Grumpy attitude and that points it to Asperger Syndrome. So here's the traits
Resistance to or Obliviousness of Social Niceties, Blunt Honesty ("Frankness")
Non-Instinctual Facial Expression (his neutral face is a frown and not a smile like the others)
Comprehensive Academic Knowledge, with unique Specialist Subjects (Bookworm who loves Butterflies)
Periodic Emotional Volatility, "Meltdowns" (His Head Physically Spins when angry, to the point he is exhausted and dizzy; he also flaps his arms when excited)
Adherence to Formal/Traditional Decorum to navigate social situations (he has a few costume changes of his own, talk about that later)
Sensory Sensitivity and rigid dietary habits (Frank is shown making Green Gelatin Salad on two separate occasions, I'm guessing he likes the Color and Softness)
Anxious in otherwise Moderate Stress events (he was freakin out when carpooling with Wally)
Friends in different age groups (Poppy and Julie are confirmed as autistic so poppy might be older and julie maybe younger. i have friends a grade below me)
3. Entomologist job from a university??? - Y'all prolly already know this, Frank's love of butterflies isn't just a hobby non non, he is infact an entomologist, we can confirm this with the spinning head GIF, there's mounted butterfly specimens on his wall. Alright alright, Bug Collecting won't buy you a can of beans and traumatizing Howdy from the Bodega, UNLESS your an employee from a University to research the nearby Insect Wildlife. (It's not rlly mentioned in The Show but most of them have some sorta job) I think thats how Eddie reunited with Frank bcuz the university might be working in the military program Eddie enlisted in back in 1953. What is obvious is that This University MUST exist or frank and eddie wouldn't reunite.
4. Ethnicity Analysis Time!!!!! - Frank showed his ethnicity through his Valentines Card (thx frank!). Frank is wearing an Old-Time Safari Costume when catching Butterflies, but it's not just a stereotypical costume non non, the design is inspired by a VERY specific Uniform. he's wearing is a British Expedition Bush Jacket, topped with a matching Safari Pith Helmet, Light Tan Fabric of the Indian Variety. Although the card is in a pinkish hue, I can tell that the uniform is a tad bit lighter so its a Light Muslin Fabric. Yeah Sure, the British Invasion of the 60s revived the Shacket look for Women's Fashion, but Frank's pragmatic personality made it clear that he was issued that Expedition Uniform with Function planned in it. In addition with his Grey skin, Black hair and his iconic Unibrow, He is designed to look like The Stereotypical Depiction of a Gentleman Scientist of Hindoo Colonial Heritage or to simplified it, he came from Hindu / Indian origins.
5. Frank's Story - Frank Franklin was born in 1942 and was born Half Indian from his mother, He was fascinated with bugs and specifically Butterflies as they represent change and rebirth. He was teasedfor having his name as his last name (Have u guys even heard of Tweek Tweak?) even with his blunt honesty he made friends and even became childhood sweethearts with eddie. One day in Senior High, Eddie said that he was gonna enlist and may return 2 years later, Frank was worried as to add salt to the wound his soon to be Ex sunny became toxic and mean-spirited so ofc they broke up. 2 years later he was working as an Entomologist at St. Marioneta University (I made that up) and then he ran into Eddie, they were happy to see each other still okay so on an unknown date in 1969 they married in secret (THANKS ALOT TIME PERIOD D:<). months later in October 11 1969 a man named Ronald Dorelaine Isekai'd Frank, Eddie and some friends you know to the World of Welcome Home, but tragedy struck 4 years later, An event known as The Playfellow M4ss4cr3 killed the crew and the stars of the show but Dorelaine's body was not found and was reported MISSING and presumed dead, This marks the 50th year they were stuck in the void, Are they longing for Freedom or The Sweet release of DEATH?
Wanna hear a wholesome fun fact? In Hinduism, Butterflies are symbolic of birth, ancestry, marriage, deceased soul, death and divinity. No wonder why frank is so attached to Butterflies.
Thank you for reading! o(* ̄︶ ̄*)o

Strawberry Shortcake DR AU!!!!!!
One of my personal favorites in my collection of AU's! After each character's name, their pet and their name will be listed, followed by their horse, cause I adore the concept that Strawberry Shortcake put forth as well as me being a horse girl,,, To make it a bit easier to get through, I'll be separating the cast into three groups, one for each mainline game, with Komaru included in the THH section!
I do also have a storyline planned out for a series of fics so if that's something ya'll would wanna see sooner rather than later, lemme know!
(if any of this is confusing af, please don't hesitate to ask me about it, I love these blorbos and the au's I make for them)

Plant-Powered Treats: Vegan Food for Healthy and Happy Hair
When it comes to achieving hair many of us turn to a variety of hair care products such as shampoos, conditioners, serums and masks. While these external treatments can certainly enhance the look of our hair, true hair health starts from within.
The food we consume plays a role in the strength, shine and overall well-being of our locks. In times there has been an increase in the popularity of vegan diets as more individuals adopt plant-based eating habits for reasons related to health, ethics and the environment.
Connection Between Nutrition and Hair Well-being
Before exploring vegan gluten-free food that promotes hair growth it is important to grasp how nutrition impacts the health of our hair. Like any part of our body, our hair requires a balanced diet to flourish.
Certain nutrients are essential for supporting hair growth, strength, and luster. These nutrients include:
Protein: Since hair is mainly made up of keratin protein ensuring an adequate intake is vital, for promoting hair growth and upkeep.
Omega 3 Fatty Acids: These beneficial fats play a role in nourishing the scalp and maintaining the function of hair follicles.
Role of a Nutritionist
While adopting a vegan diet rich in nutrient-packed plant-based foods is a crucial step towards promoting hair health, consulting with a qualified nutritionist can provide personalised guidance and support.
Additionally, an online nutritionist can provide education on the importance of key nutrients for hair health and offer practical tips for incorporating them into your meals. This can enhance your vegan lifestyle to ensure your hair receives the nourishment it needs to thrive.
Great Vegan Sources of Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Flaxseeds: These small seeds are packed with alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) a type of omega 3 fatty acid that the body transforms into EPA and DHA the forms of omega 3s.
Chia Seeds: Similar to flaxseeds chia seeds are rich in ALA and offer nutrients like fiber, protein and antioxidants.
Veggie Capsules: Veggie capsules are generally considered to be more environmentally friendly and sustainable than gelatin capsules, as they are derived from renewable plant sources.
Walnuts: Not only do walnuts provide omega 3 fatty acids but they also contain vitamins and minerals essential for supporting overall hair health such as vitamin E and biotin.
Vitamins and Minerals for Vibrant Tresses
Moreover, apart from protein and healthy fats, vitamins and minerals are crucial for maintaining strong hair. Key nutrients like vitamin A, vitamin E, biotin, zinc and iron play crucial roles in promoting hair growth, preventing hair loss, and enhancing shine.
Luckily many plant-based foods are abundant in these nutrients. Here are some plant-based goodies to nourish your hair from the inside out:
Dark Leafy Greens: Leafy greens like spinach, kale and Swiss chard are bursting with vitamins A and C which help boost sebum production in the scalp and maintain hair follicle health.
Sweet Potatoes: Sweet potatoes, packed with beta carotene that converts to vitamin A play a role in keeping your scalp healthy and supporting hair growth.
Berries: Berries such as blueberries, strawberries and raspberries are loaded with vitamin C and antioxidants that shield hair follicles from stress and enhance collagen production for stronger glossier hair.
Legumes: Legumes like beans and lentils not only offer protein but also supply iron and zinc—essential minerals for promoting healthy hair growth and preventing loss.
Embracing a Vegan Lifestyle for Healthy, Happy Hair
By adopting a vegan lifestyle with these plant-based delights, in your diet plan you can pamper your locks internally for happy hair that radiates vitality. Remember to maintain variety in your meals while staying hydrated with water intake to keep both your hair and scalp well nourished from the inside
By getting a bit creative in the kitchen and paying attention to your nutrition you can unlock the secret to having hair while following a vegan lifestyle that benefits both you, the animals and the environment.
Conclusion
To sum it up there’s a link between vegan food choices and healthy hair. By focusing on incorporating nutrient-packed plant-based foods into your meals you can nurture your hair from the inside out. Achieve the hair you’ve always desired.
Whether you’re preparing a protein quinoa salad, blending a fruity smoothie bowl or savoring some potato tacos, countless tasty vegan dishes can help enhance your hair’s vibrancy and your overall well-being. So why wait? Start adding these plant-based delights to your diet today and witness your hair thrive with vitality and luster.

thanksgiving Day is next week! If you have some ideas for a good meal plan just don’t bring these items to the table
FOOD
17 Dishes You BET NOT Bring to a Black Thanksgiving
You'll be better off bringing paper plates than potato salad with raisins.
By
Kalyn Womack
Published12 hours ago
There are more than a dozen things that are off the table (or should be kept off the table) when it comes to what to bring to Thanksgiving. Or rather...a Black Thanksgiving.
I don’t know what the white folks do over there but over here? We eat sweet potato pies, not pumpkin pies. We eat mac n’ cheese without breadcrumbs. We’d also rather you make one item in its classic recipe versus making it into a casserole.
Black folks stick to the same menu every year and it hasn’t budged for decades now.
If you’re debating on what to bring to Thanksgiving this year, check out this list of 17 things not to bring. And remember: when in doubt, bring the liquor.

Green Bean Casserole
Amongst the several polls I sent out requesting ideas for this list, this abomination was at the top. The only acceptable form of green beans is with smoked turkey neck and potatoes. Why is it a trend to make this a casserole?

3 / 19
List slides
Mashed Potatoes
This may be debatable, but trust...you’ll never find this in my household. We have other things to hold gravy. Enter: rice, dressing, and of course, turkey.

List slides
Potato Salad with Raisins
Matter fact, keep anything you got with raisins in it. Keep ya potato salad, ya pasta salad, macaroni salad and the criminal attempt at a pan of macaroni and cheese if it has raisins. You must do time over this.

List slides
Pumpkin Things
I don’t have anything against pumpkins for the rest of the Fall/Autumn season, but on Thanksgiving? This is strictly a sweet potato household. If I bite into a pie and it’s pumpkin, we might have to fight.

6 / 19
List slides
Creamed Spinach
Why? You’re better of bringing artichoke dip for us to snack on while we wait for the food. No one is putting this on their plate.
7 / 19
List slides
Brussels Sprouts
There’s a specific selection of vegetables that are Thanksgiving-friendly and Brussels sprouts ain’t on the list, sweetheart. Now...if you know how to make them Capital Grille style, you can bring me a pan ;)

List slides
Canned Greens
Since I was a child, I sat in the kitchen snapping green beans and watching my grandmother clean the collards. You think I don’t know the difference between fresh and canned vegetables? Go head...take the risk of being embarrassed by the shady banter of the entire family if you cut corners and bring canned greens.
9 / 19
List slides
Boxed Gravy
Again, we can tell the difference. There are too many leftover greases and turkey juices for you to not be able to make a gravy. Leave that flavorless roux home.
10 / 19
List slides
Fruit Cake
The main desserts include pie, cobblers, banana pudding and maybe a pound cake. If you walk in with a fruit cake, you will also leave with that fruit cake.

11 / 19
List slides
Sugar- or Gluten-Free Sweets
Speaking of desserts, we like sugar. We embrace gluten. Even if you’re trying to be conscious of the one guest who has a dietary restriction, please let the rest of us enjoy ourselves.
12 / 19
List slides
Beyond Meats
On any other day, I will embrace vegan alternatives. But please don’t play with my pork chops and turkey wings.
13 / 19
List slides
Gelatin-Based Oddities
We’re wayyy past that odd 1980s moment when everything edible was put in gelatin. Leave it alone, babes..unless it’s Jell-O shots. Those are always welcome.
14 / 19
List slides
Ambrosia
I just learned that this unicorn vomit had a name. That being said, don’t you even dare.
15 / 19
List slides
Soup
Why?
16 / 19
List slides
Broccoli-Cheddar Whatever
I get it. Tis’ the season to embrace all variations of broccoli-cheddar dishes. But do us a favor and leave your go-to lunch food in the fridge.
17 / 19
List slides
Spaghetti
Are you crazy? Your kids have been eating spaghetti for the past week and that’s what you bring to the feast of feasts?!
18 / 19
List slides
Whatever You Know You’re Not In Charge Of...
Every family has the one relative they can count on for a prominent Thanksgiving dish. If Mama makes the mac n’ cheese every year, please don’t consider this your moment to play Hell’s Kitchen. You will lose.

Veganism is a lifestyle that prioritizes consuming plant-based products while excluding animal-based products. It has gained popularity as a dietary choice, increasing the number of people embracing this lifestyle. However, despite its growing acceptance, some individuals still have unresolved concerns about veganism. But fear not! The “Veganism Fun Facts” article is here to help. We’ll share some fun facts about veganism that will address your concerns and provide valuable insights into this exciting lifestyle.
Although you may hear veganism often in recent years, it is not new—the history of veganism dates back to 2000 years ago.
The term vegan originated in 1944 by a man called Donald Watson. He made a group vegan society as he left his local vegetarian.
As you may be aware, livestock production significantly contributes to environmental issues due to the significant carbon emissions released, including global warming.
By eliminating meat and dairy from your meal plan, you can significantly reduce the demand for animal rearing.
According to a study by Oxford University, shifting to veganism can lead to a remarkable 73% reduction in carbon footprint.
The type of animals people consume can vary depending on the region, climate, and food types.
It does not matter which type of animal people use; once people adapt to veganism and remove the consumption of animal-based foods from their diet, the life of hundreds of animals can be saved each year, as The Vegan Calculator revealed.
A massive scale of natural resources such as forests, water is used for rearing livestock. To add a single pound to beef weight, I need 10.910 liters of water.
So, when people don’t rely on livestock to feed, over 1.5 million liters of water, 1000 square meters of forest, and 3.200Kg kg of Co2 will be saved.
One of the misconceptions about veganism is that a vegan diet needs more protein. But the truth is something else.
Most plant-based products are rich in protein which meets the protein requirements of bodies. By including lentils, beans, peas, nuts, mushrooms, broccoli, soya, and pasta to provide your body with protein.
If you are concerned about calcium, there is no worry. Same go for the calcium-by-vegan diet, and you can include green leafy veg, soya products, and plant-based milk, such as oat, almond, or hazelnut.
The fun fact about veganism is that people think they can consume all alcoholic drinks.
Although most booze is made from plants such as wine, beer, and potatoes, they cannot be included in a vegan diet.
The base of booze is planted, but through bottling, they undergo some stages, which include animal-based materials such as gelatin, egg white, or milk protein.
So before drinking these beverages, you should read the label on the bottle.
Unlike the people who thought that veganism leads to pale and some diseases. Eliminating meat and dairy from a meal not only does not lead to health issues but also reduce the risk of chronic disease such as heart problems.
Various studies show that the more reliance on plant-based products, the less risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes type 2.
Following a strict vegan diet seems complicated for some people to remove animal-based products altogether.
So, you can adapt to slight Vegan in the way you prefer to take advantage of the health benefits of a vegan diet.
It does not only apply to health benefits; it also contributes to environmental benefits.
For example, if you don’t use a portion of meat for one week, you will save 790 bathtubs of water per year, three tennis courts of forests, and reduce greenhouse gases emitted to the atmosphere.
According to the BBC, replacing one serving of cow’s milk daily can result in a carbon saving of up to 229kg over a year.
Similarly, giving up a weekly portion of cheese can save emissions equivalent to heating the average UK home for 11 days!
You can gradually shift to veganism by replacing some foods with animal-based foods.

NURSINGSCIENCE EXAM
1. Which of the following foods would the nurse encourage the client in sickle cell crisis to eat?
A. Steak
B. Cottage cheese
C. Popsicle √
D. Lima beans
Explanation: Hydration is important in the client with sickle cell disease to prevent thrombus formation. Popsicles, gelatin, juice, and pudding have high fluid content. The foods in answers A, B, and D do not aid in hydration
2. A newly admitted client has a sickle cell crisis. He is complaining of pain in his feet and hands. The nurse’s assessment findings include a pulse oximetry of 92. Assuming that all the following interventions are ordered, which should be done first?
A. Adjust the room temperature
B. Give a bolus of IV fluids
C. Start O2 √
D. Administer meperidine (Demerol) 75mg IV push
Explanation: The pulse oximetry indicates that oxygen levels are low; thus, oxygenation takes precedence over pain relief.
• Answer A is incorrect because although a warm environment reduces pain and minimizes sickling, it would not be a priority.
• Answer B is incorrect because although hydration is important, it would not require a bolus.
• Answer D is incorrect because Demerol is acidifying to the blood and increases sickling.
3. A 43-year-old African American male is admitted with sickle cell anemia. The nurse plans to assess circulation in the lower extremities every two hours. Which of the following outcome criteria would the nurse use?
A. Body temperature of 99°F or less
B. Toes moved in active range of motion
C. Sensation reported when soles of feet are touched
D. Capillary refill of < 3 seconds √
Explanation: It is important to assess the extremities for blood vessel occlusion in the client with sickle cell anemia because a change in capillary refill would indicate a change in circulation. Body temperature, motion, and sensation would not give information regarding peripheral circulation; therefore, answers A, B, and C are incorrect.
4. A 30-year-old male from Haiti is brought to the emergency department in sickle cell crisis. What is the best position for this client?
A. Side-lying with knees flexed
B. Knee-chest
C. High Fowler’s with knees flexed
D. √ Semi-Fowler’s with legs extended on the bed
Explanation: Placing the client in semi-Fowler’s position provides the best oxygenation for this client. Flexion of the hips and knees, which includes the knee chest position, impedes circulation and is not correct positioning for this client.
5. A 25-year-old male is admitted in sickle cell crisis. Which of the following interventions would be of highest priority for this client?
A. Taking hourly blood pressures with mechanical cuff
B. Encouraging fluid intake of at least 200mL per hour √
C. Position in high Fowler’s with knee gatch raised
D. Administering Tylenol as ordered
Explanation: It is important to keep the client in sickle cell crisis hydrated to prevent further sickling of the blood.
• Answer A is incorrect because a mechanical cuff places too much pressure on the arm.
• Answer C is incorrect because raising the knee gatch impedes circulation.
• Answer D is incorrect because Tylenol is too mild and analgesic for the client in crisis.
6. The nurse is instructing a client with iron-deficiency anemia. Which of the following meal plans would the nurse expect the client to select?
A. Roast beef, gelatin salad, green beans, and peach pie
B. Chicken salad sandwich, coleslaw, French fries, ice cream
C. Egg salad on wheat bread, carrot sticks, lettuce salad, raisin pie √
D. Pork chop, creamed potatoes, corn, and coconut cake
Explanation: Egg yolks, wheat bread, carrots, raisins, and green, leafy vegetables are all high in iron, which is an important mineral for this client. Roast beef, cabbage, and pork chops are also high in iron, but the side dishes accompanying these choices are not; therefore, answers A, B, and D are incorrect.
7. Clients with sickle cell anemia are taught to avoid activities that cause hypoxia and hypoxemia. Which of the following activities would the nurse recommend?
A. A family vacation in the Rocky Mountains
B. Chaperoning the local boys club on a snow-skiing trip
C. Traveling by airplane for business trips
D. √ A bus trip to the Museum of Natural History
Explanation: Taking a trip to the museum is the only answer that does not pose a threat. A family vacation in the Rocky Mountains at high altitudes, cold temperatures, and airplane travel can cause sickling episodes and should be avoided; therefore, answers A, B, and C are incorrect.
8. The nurse is conducting an admission assessment of a client with vitamin B12 deficiency. Which finding reinforces the diagnosis of B12 deficiency?
A. Enlarged spleen
B. Elevated blood pressure
C. Bradycardia
D. Beefy tongue✔️
Explanation:The tongue of the client with B12 insufficiency is red and beefy. Answers A, B, and C incorrect because enlarged spleen, elevated BP, and bradycardia are not associated with B12 deficiency
9. The body part that would most likely display jaundice in the dark skinned individual is the:
A. Conjunctiva of the eye
B. Soles of the feet
C. Roof of the mouth✔️
D. Shins
Explanation: The oral mucosa and hard palate (roof of the mouth) are the best indicators of jaundice in dark-skinned persons. The conjunctiva can have normal deposits of fat, which give a yellowish hue; thus, answer A is incorrect. The soles of the feet can be yellow if they are calloused, making answer B incorrect; the shins would be an area of darker pigment, so answer D is incorrect.
10. The nurse is conducting a physical assessment on a client with anemia. Which of the following clinical manifestations would be most indicative of the anemia?
A. BP 146/88
B.✔️ Respirations 28 shallow
C. Weight gain of 10 pounds in six months
D. Pink complexion
Explanation: When there are fewer red blood cells, there is less hemoglobin and less oxygen. Therefore, the client is often short of breath, as indicated in answer B. The client with anemia is often pale in color, has weight loss, and may be hypotensive. Answers A, C, and D are within normal and, therefore, are incorrect.
11. The nurse is teaching the client with polycythemia vera about prevention of complications of the disease. Which of the following statements by the client indicates a need for further teaching?
A. “I will drink 500mL of fluid or less each day.”
B. “I will wear a support hose.”
C. “I will check my blood pressure regularly.”
D. “I will report ankle edema.”
Explanation: The client with polycythemia vera is at risk for thrombus formation. Hydrating the client with at least 3L of fluid per day is important in preventing clot formation, so the statement to drink less than 500mL is incorrect. Answers B, C, and D are incorrect because they all contribute to the prevention of complications. Support hose promotes venous return, the electric razor prevents bleeding due to injury, and a diet low in iron is essential to preventing further red cell formation.
12. A 33-year-old male is being evaluated for possible acute leukemia. Which of the following findings is most likely related to the diagnosis of leukemia?
A. The client collects stamps as a hobby.
B. The client recently lost his job as a postal worker.
C. The client had radiation for treatment of Hodgkin’s disease as a teenager.✔️
D. The client’s brother had leukemia as a child.
Explanation: Radiation treatment for other types of cancer can contribute to the development of leukemia. Some hobbies and occupations involving chemicals are linked to leukemia, but not the ones in these answers; therefore, answers A and B are incorrect. Answer D is incorrect because the incidence of leukemia is higher in twins, not siblings.
13. Where is the best site for examining for the presence of petechiae in an African American client?
A. The abdomen
B. The thorax
C. The earlobes
D. The soles of the feet✔️
Explanation: Petechiae are not usually visualized on dark skin. The soles of the feet and palms of the hand provide a lighter surface for assessing the client for petichiae. Answers A, B, and C are incorrect because the skin may be too dark to make an assessment.
14. The client is being evaluated for possible acute leukemia. Which inquiry by the nurse is most important?
A. “Have you noticed a change in sleeping habits recently?”
B. “Have you had a respiratory infection in the last six months?”✔️
C. “Have you lost weight recently?”
D. “Have you noticed changes in your alertness?”
Explanation: The client with leukemia is at risk for infection and has often had recurrent respiratory infections during the previous six months. Insomnolence, weight loss, and a decrease in alertness also occur in leukemia, but bleeding tendencies and infections are the primary clinical manifestations; therefore, answers A, C, and D are incorrect.
15. Which of the following would be the priority nursing diagnosis for the adult client with acute leukemia?
A. Oral mucous membrane, altered related to chemotherapy
B. Risk for injury related to thrombocytopenia✔️
C. Fatigue related to the disease process
D. Interrupted family processes related to life-threatening illness of a family member
Explanation: The client with acute leukemia has bleeding tendencies due to decreased platelet counts, and any injury would exacerbate the problem. The client would require close monitoring for hemorrhage, which is of higher priority than the diagnoses in answers A, C, and D, which are incorrect
16. A 21-year-old male with Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a senior at the local university. He is engaged to be married and is to begin a new job upon graduation. Which of the following diagnoses would be a priority for this client?
A. Sexual dysfunction related to radiation therapy✔️
B. Anticipatory grieving related to terminal illness
C. Tissue integrity related to prolonged bed rest
D. Fatigue related to chemotherapy
Explanation: Radiation therapy often causes sterility in male clients and would be of primary importance to this client. The psychosocial needs of the client are important to address in light of the age and life choices. Hodgkin’s disease, however, has a good prognosis when diagnosed early. Answers B, C, and D are incorrect because they are of lesser priority.
17. A client has autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura. To determine the client’s response to treatment, the nurse would monitor:
A. Platelet count✔️
B. White blood cell count
C. Potassium levels
D. Partial prothrombin time (PTT)
Explanation: Clients with autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura (ATP) have low platelet counts, making answer A the correct answer. White cell counts, potassium levels, and PTT are not affected in ATP; thus, answers B, C, and D are incorrect
18. The home health nurse is visiting a client with autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura (ATP). The client’s platelet count currently is 80,000. It will be most important to teach the client and family about:
A. Bleeding precautions✔️
B. Prevention of falls
C. Oxygen therapy
D. Conservation of energy
Explanation: The normal platelet count is 120,000–400,000. Bleeding occurs in clients with low platelets. The priority is to prevent and minimize bleeding. Oxygenation in answer C is important, but platelets do not carry oxygen. Answers B and D are of lesser priority and are incorrect in this instance
19. The client has surgery for removal of a Prolactinoma. Which of the following interventions would be appropriate for this client?
A. Place the client in Trendelenburg position for postural drainage.
B. Encourage coughing and deep breathing every two hours.
C. Elevate the head of the bed 30°.✔️
D. Encourage the Valsalva maneuver for bowel movements.
Explanation: A prolactinoma is a type of pituitary tumor. Elevating the head of the bed 30° avoids pressure on the sella turcica and helps to prevent headaches. Answers A, B, and D are incorrect because Trendelenburg, Valsalva maneuver, and coughing all increase the intracranial pressure.
20. The client with a history of diabetes insipidus is admitted with polyuria, polydipsia, and mental confusion. The priority intervention for this client is:
A. Measure the urinary output.
B. Check the vital signs.✔️
C. Encourage increased fluid intake.
D. Weigh the client.
Explanation: The large amount of fluid loss can cause fluid and electrolyte imbalance that should be corrected. The loss of electrolytes would be reflected in the vital signs. Measuring the urinary output is important, but the stem already says that the client has polyuria, so answer A is incorrect. Encouraging fluid intake will not correct the problem, making answer C incorrect. Answer D is incorrect because weighing
the client is not necessary at this time
21. A client with hemophilia has a nosebleed. Which nursing action is most appropriate to control the bleeding?
A. Place the client in a sitting position.
B. Administer acetaminophen (Tylenol).
C. Pinch the soft lower part of the nose.✔️
D. Apply ice packs to the forehead.
Explanation: C is correct because direct pressure to the nose stops the bleeding. Answers A, B, and D are incorrect because they do not stop bleeding.
22. A client has had a unilateral adrenalectomy to remove a tumor. The most important measurement in the immediate post-operative period for the nurse to take is:
A. The blood pressure✔️
B. The temperature
C. The urinary output
D. The specific gravity of the urine
Explanation: Blood pressure is the best indicator of cardiovascular collapse in the client who has had an adrenal gland removed. The remaining gland might have been suppressed due to the tumor activity. Temperature would be an indicator of infection, decreased output would be a clinical manifestation but would take longer to occur than blood pressure changes, and specific gravity changes occur with other disorders; therefore, answers B, C, and D are incorrect
23. A client with Addison’s disease has been admitted with a history of nausea and vomiting for the past three days. The client is receiving IV glucocorticoids (Solu-Medrol). Which of the following interventions would the nurse implement?
A. Glucometer readings as ordered✔️
B. Intake/output measurements
C. Evaluating the sodium and potassium levels
D. Daily weights
Explanation: IV glucocorticoids raise the glucose levels and often require coverage with insulin. Answer B is not necessary at this time, sodium and potassium levels would be monitored when the client is receiving mineral corticoids, and daily weights is unnecessary; therefore, answers B, C, and D are incorrect
24. A client had a total thyroidectomy yesterday. The client is complaining of tingling around the mouth and in the fingers and toes. What would the nurses’ next action be?
A. Obtain a crash cart.
B.✔️ Check the calcium level.
C. Assess the dressing for drainage.
D. Assess the blood pressure for hypertension.
Explanation: The parathyroid glands are responsible for calcium production and can be damaged during a thyroidectomy. The tingling can be due to low calcium levels. The crash cart would be needed in respiratory distress but would not be the next action to take; thus, answer A is incorrect. Hypertension occurs in thyroid storm and the drainage would occur in hemorrhage, so answers C and D are incorrect
25. A 32-year-old mother of three is brought to the clinic. Her pulse is 52, there is a weight gain of 30 pounds in four months, and the client is wearing two sweaters. The client is diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Which of the following nursing diagnoses is of highest priority?
A. Impaired physical mobility related to decreased endurance
B. Hypothermia r/t decreased metabolic rate
C. Disturbed thought processes r/t interstitial edema
D. Decreased cardiac output r/t bradycardia✔️
Explanation: The decrease in pulse can affect the cardiac output and lead to shock, which would take precedence over the other choices; therefore, answers A, B, and C are incorrect.

What is a vegan diet? A comprehensive beginner's guide
A vegan diet is a type of plant-based diet that excludes all animal products such as meat, dairy, eggs, and honey. People who follow a vegan diet often do so for ethical, environmental, or health reasons. In addition to avoiding animal products, a vegan diet typically includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds. It is important for vegans to ensure that they are getting all the necessary nutrients by incorporating a variety of foods and, in some cases, taking supplements such as vitamin B12. Vegan diets can help you lose weight A vegan diet can be effective for weight loss, but it is not a guaranteed method for everyone. Vegan diets are often lower in calories and fat than diets that include animal products, which can make it easier to create a calorie deficit and lose weight. Additionally, a vegan diet often includes more whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, which can help increase feelings of fullness and reduce overall calorie intake. However, it is still important to consume a balanced and varied vegan diet that provides all the necessary nutrients. Eating a lot of processed vegan foods such as vegan burgers, vegan cheese, and vegan ice cream can be high in calories and fat, and may not lead to weight loss. Furthermore, the effectiveness of a vegan diet for weight loss may also depend on individual factors such as age, gender, activity level, and underlying health conditions. Therefore, it is always recommended to consult a healthcare professional or registered dietitian before making any significant changes to your diet or lifestyle. Foods to eat A vegan diet can include a wide variety of foods. Here are some examples of foods to eat on a vegan diet: - Fruits: Apples, bananas, oranges, berries, grapes, etc. - Vegetables: Leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, peppers, etc. - Legumes: Lentils, chickpeas, black beans, kidney beans, etc. - Whole grains: Brown rice, quinoa, oats, barley, etc. - Nuts and seeds: Almonds, cashews, chia seeds, flax seeds, etc. - Soy products: Tofu, tempeh, soy milk, etc. - Non-dairy milk: Almond milk, oat milk, soy milk, etc. - Plant-based protein sources: Seitan, pea protein, hemp protein, etc. - Healthy fats: Avocado, nuts, seeds, olive oil, etc. - Vegan snacks: Hummus, vegetable sticks, popcorn, fruit, etc. It is important to consume a variety of foods to ensure that you are meeting all your nutrient needs. Additionally, you may need to supplement with certain vitamins and minerals such as vitamin B12, vitamin D, and calcium. Consulting a registered dietitian can help you plan a balanced and nutritious vegan diet. Foods to avoid On a vegan diet, you will need to avoid all animal-derived foods. Here are some examples of foods to avoid: - Meat: Beef, chicken, fish, etc. - Dairy products: Milk, cheese, butter, yogurt, etc. - Eggs: Including baked goods or other foods that contain eggs. - Honey: Since it is produced by bees. - Gelatin: A protein made from animal collagen, often found in gummy candies and marshmallows. - Some types of sugar: Some types of sugar are processed with bone char, which is made from animal bones. It's important to read labels carefully to avoid animal-derived ingredients that may be hiding in foods you might not expect, such as baked goods, sauces, and dressings. Additionally, some processed foods may contain animal-derived additives, so it's important to choose whole, minimally processed foods whenever possible. Overall, it is important to ensure that you are consuming a varied and balanced vegan diet that provides all the necessary nutrients. Consulting with a registered dietitian can help you plan a healthy and satisfying vegan diet. Different types of vegan diets There are several different types of vegan diets, each with its own unique characteristics. Here are a few examples: - Whole-food vegan diet: This diet focuses on whole, unprocessed plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds. - Raw vegan diet: A raw vegan diet consists of mostly or entirely raw foods that have not been cooked above a certain temperature (usually around 118°F/48°C). This diet often includes fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds, as well as sprouted grains and legumes. - Junk food vegan diet: This diet includes highly processed, vegan-friendly foods such as vegan burgers, fries, and pizza. While these foods may be vegan, they are often high in calories, fat, and sodium, and may not provide all the necessary nutrients. - High-carb vegan diet: This diet focuses on high-carbohydrate plant-based foods such as fruits, grains, and starchy vegetables. It may include some processed foods such as pasta, bread, and rice. - Gluten-free vegan diet: This diet excludes all foods that contain gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye, as well as all animal products. It may include naturally gluten-free foods such as fruits, vegetables, and nuts, as well as gluten-free grains like quinoa and brown rice. It is important to note that regardless of the type of vegan diet you choose, it is important to ensure that you are getting all the necessary nutrients to support your health. Consulting with a registered dietitian can help you plan a balanced and nutritious vegan diet that meets your individual needs. Vegan diet health benefits A well-planned vegan diet can provide a range of health benefits. Here are some examples: - Reduced risk of chronic diseases: Research suggests that a vegan diet may help reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. This may be due in part to the high intake of plant-based foods that are rich in fiber, antioxidants, and other beneficial nutrients. - Improved heart health: Studies have shown that a vegan diet may help improve heart health by lowering blood pressure, reducing cholesterol levels, and decreasing the risk of heart disease. - Weight management: A vegan diet may be helpful for weight management due to the lower calorie density of plant-based foods and the increased intake of fiber, which helps promote feelings of fullness and reduce overall calorie intake. - Improved digestion: A vegan diet that includes plenty of whole, plant-based foods may be beneficial for digestive health by promoting regular bowel movements and providing beneficial nutrients for gut health. - Improved overall nutrient intake: While it is important to pay attention to nutrient intake on a vegan diet, a well-planned vegan diet can provide all the necessary nutrients, including protein, iron, calcium, and vitamin B12. Additionally, a vegan diet is often rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants due to the high intake of plant-based foods. It is important to note that the benefits of a vegan diet may vary depending on individual factors such as age, gender, activity level, and underlying health conditions. Consulting with a registered dietitian can help you plan a balanced and nutritious vegan diet that meets your individual needs.
Risks and how to minimize them While a well-planned vegan diet can provide many health benefits, there are also some risks associated with this way of eating. Here are a few potential risks and how to minimize them: - Nutrient deficiencies: A vegan diet can be low in certain nutrients that are abundant in animal-derived foods, such as vitamin B12, iron, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids. To minimize the risk of nutrient deficiencies, it is important to eat a varied and balanced vegan diet that includes a range of nutrient-rich plant-based foods. For example, vegans can obtain vitamin B12 from fortified foods or supplements, iron from legumes, nuts, and seeds, calcium from fortified plant milks or leafy greens, and omega-3 fatty acids from flaxseeds, chia seeds, or supplements. - Protein intake: It is important to consume enough protein on a vegan diet to support optimal health. Good sources of plant-based protein include legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. To ensure adequate protein intake, it may be helpful to track protein intake using an app or consult with a registered dietitian. - Food allergies and intolerances: Vegan diets may include many allergens, such as nuts, soy, and wheat. It is important to identify and avoid allergens or intolerances to prevent adverse reactions. - Food safety: Consuming a diet high in raw fruits and vegetables can increase the risk of foodborne illness. It is important to wash all produce thoroughly and store food properly to minimize the risk of foodborne illness. - Disordered eating: Veganism can be used as a cover for disordered eating patterns. It is important to maintain a healthy relationship with food and avoid restrictive eating patterns. To minimize these risks, it is important to consume a varied and balanced vegan diet that meets your individual nutrient needs. Consulting with a registered dietitian can help you plan a healthy and balanced vegan diet. Additionally, regular health check-ups and blood tests can help identify any nutrient deficiencies or other health concerns. Beginners Tips for Following a Vegan Diet If you are interested in following a vegan diet, here are some tips to help you get started: - Educate yourself: Learn about what a vegan diet entails and what foods are included and excluded. idiot
pairing: xiao / gn!reader
cw: cursing, mild violence, description of injuries
in which xiao thinks you’re an idiot, but never once thought he’d want you to be his idiot
wc: 4.7k
A/N: hey everyone! i’ve never written before, and i’ve kinda been on my genshin brainrot for a while now. honestly this has been living in my mind rent free for a while so i decided to take a crack at it and start writing, and the result was this kinda corny, super cliche lil ficlet. hope you all enjoy! also, it’s not edited because i’m kinda lazy whoops. luv ya, n enjoy!
Xiao hates you.
He really does.
How dare you walk into HIS inn, stand on HIS balcony eating HIS almond tofu, grinning that disgustingly beautiful smile while loudly talking to your equally as loud companion about archons know what.
Honestly? Xiao thinks you’re an idiot.
He watches for around 20 minutes, fuming, as the two of you continue your high volume conversation that has done nothing but disturb his peace. Xiao decides then and there that he does not like you, and he wants you away from him as soon as possible.
With that thought in mind, he hops down from his spot on the roof.
His hand reaches out to angrily tap you on the shoulder, when suddenly he’s face to face with wide (e/c) eyes.
“Well hello there handsome.”
“Excuse me?”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You were having a pretty good day.
You had finally reached Liyue after almost 2 weeks of travelling, as you hailed from Mondstadt originally. You were sent out on a couple commissions that required you to travel to the neighboring city of Liyue, where you met your current travelling companion and good friend Xiangling. The two of you had eaten dinner at her restaurant, where you were recommended the Wangshu Inn by a passing customer.
“Xiangling, do you know of a possible place that I could stay tonight?” you swallowed your Sweet Mistress before continuing. “I have to head out on a commission in the plains tomorrow, so I need somewhere near there.”
Xiangling opened her mouth to answer you, but a man passing by your table spoke before she could. “The Guili Plains? There’s a nice inn over there called the Wangshu Inn that you could stay at. The nightly rate isn’t too expensive, and the views are incredible.”
Xiangling sprung up from her chair. “Wangshu Inn? I know that place! I’ve heard so many good things about it. Oh and the food there- YUM!! They have so many amazing options. There's mora meat, sweet mistresses, almond tofu-”
“Xiangling! Take a breath, girl!” You cut off her mindless rambling with an eye roll, patting her back as she heaved.
The passerby spoke up again, “I would really recommend the almond tofu. The chef there, Smiley Yixiao, is a good friend of mine, and he makes delicious almond tofu. You should definitely try it if you end up staying there.”
You smiled, thanking him for his help before nodding to Xiangling. She met your gaze, and the two of you cleared your table before walking out.
Before you left, the nice passerby stopped you one last time.
“It’s still light outside. If you hurry, you can catch the sunset! The top floor valley has a gorgeous view of the sunset. Oh- and tell Yixiao hi for me, okay?”
Waving goodbye to the man, you and Xiangling started off towards the Wangshu Inn, a little skip present in your step. Picking up a light jog, you aimlessly chatted with your friend as the bustle of the City of Contracts grew farther and farther away.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Fuck, man.”
You had nearly collapsed once you finally arrived at the inn, out of breath from running for so long.
“It- shit, hold on” you pant. “It’s nearly sunset we have- we have to hurry up.”
Xiangling flashed you a quick thumbs up, equally as exhausted as you were. After getting your bearings, the two of you sluggishly walked into the inn.
A voice called out to you from your left.
“Hello and welcome to the Wangshu Inn! My name is Verr Goldet. Can I help you two travelers with anything?”
Given you still hadn’t fully recovered from the run, Xiangling took over, conversing with Verr Goldet about your anticipated stay.
While Xiangling handled the room, you decided to look around a bit. You walked down a small flight of stairs to what looked like a large kitchen, with a tall man cooking some delicious-smelling meals. The words of the friendly passerby flashed into your mind, and you asked him,
“Are you by any chance Smiley Yixiao? And do you have any of your famed almond tofu?”
The man visibly startled, a small squeak coming out of his mouth as he whipped around. Realizing it was a living person and not a ghost, he seemed to calm down. He told you that he was in fact Smiley Yixiao, and he happened to have some extra almond tofu on hand he had made earlier.
“Actually, if you could take this up to the balcony on the top floor for me, that would be great. Xiao should be up there right now.”
You nodded, taking the three plates of the gelatin dish from his hands.
‘...Xiao? Now who in the world is that.’ you wondered to yourself. Shrugging, you jogged up the stairs back to your friend, who was waiting for you with the room key.
“Oh my gosh that looks so good I am so excited!”
You returned Xiangling’s excitement with just as much enthusiasm, and you talked animatedly about how good it looked until you got to the balcony.
Eyes wide, you stared at the view in front of you in awe. The sky was a beautiful blend of crimson, gold, orange, and a hint of purple. The sun was but a small red sliver cutting the horizon. Leaning on the railing, you thought you had never seen anything more beautiful.
That is, until you turned around.
There in front of you is perhaps the most gorgeous man- no, human being you had ever seen in your life. He has pitch black hair with what looks to you like green highlights and- is that orange eyeliner? You look at his outfit- strange but it fits him in a way that’s almost unfair. But what really draws you in are his eyes. Striking liquid gold stares back at you unblinkingly, and you swear you just about passed out.
‘Well hello there handsome.’ you thought to yourself.
“Excuse me?” comes the annoyed reply.
Shit.
Did you say that out loud?
“Yes, you did in fact say that out loud.” the annoyed voice continues. “Now tell me, mortal. What in Morax’s name are you doing on my balcony?”
You know that you have a perfectly good reason for being on the balcony, it’s a public place for archon’s sake. But his steely eyes and icy voice make any defense you planned on vocalizing retreat down your throat, rendering you speechless with your mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. Your eyes quickly scan the area, searching for your friend to get you out of this mess, only to find she had left in the midst of your distraction.
The man in front of you scoffs, rolling his eyes at your flustered demeanor.
“Leave mortal. You have no business here.”
As he turns to leave, you finally find your voice.
“Hey, uh, green bean man!”
When did you get so bold?
You see him freeze midstep.
“...Green. Bean. Man?” he grits. “Why you-“
“Yeah green bean man because your hair is green and I don’t know your name anyways that’s not important basically I just wanted to see the sunset and I was told by a chef to come up here and so I did and I didn’t know it was off limits sorry it won’t happen again sexy man.”
Panting, you look at him, only to see pools of amber glaring at you from your outburst.
Letting out a nervous laugh, you fumble for the dish that was given to you, holding it out to him tentatively.
“I take it you’re probably Xiao so… almond tofu?”
You see his eyes briefly light up, before reverting back to their steely appearance. He walks over to you, snatching the food from your outreached hand. You raise your gaze to meet his, immediately feeling the intensity of his guarded glare.
“You are an idiot, mortal. Now leave, and do not come back here. Do not come near me.”
With that, he disappears in a puff of teal.
Unfortunately, Xiao was right.
You are an idiot.
For the next month, he watches with disdain as you make yourself at home on his balcony, clutching a plate of almond tofu every time.
Despite his harsh glare and “stay-away” demeanor, you make a beeline for him every time, already happily chirping away about something he deems meaningless.
He rarely answers you when you talk to him, opting instead for humming and the occasional one word answer.
That is, if he decides to respond at all.
You don’t seem to care though, if he’s thinking about it. No matter if he says anything or not, you always continue talking until he eventually leaves.
Despite what he thought at the beginning, he knows he doesn’t necessarily hate you, nor does he aspire to be mean to you.
Xiao, quite frankly, is just not used to this. ‘This’ being the idea of having a companion, a friend. He’s used to solitude, and doesn’t know how to act now that someone is showing interest in knowing him.
On top of this, he is dangerous. He knows he is dangerous.
Anyone who gets close to him eventually gets hurt. And why should he put in the effort of creating an emotional bond when all they’re going to do is leave him?
Whether it be by time,
or by his own hand.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yet here he is, 3 months into your stay in Liyue, attempting to make almond tofu with you at Xiangling’s restaurant.
You had dragged him to the city a couple of hours ago, whining that “it’s Lantern Rite, a celebration about YOU!” and “Xiao you have to go with me! Don’t make me go alone!”
He eventually gave in, (though it really didn’t take much effort on your part) and he finds himself being yanked by the hand through the lantern-lit city.
He thinks if you weren’t holding onto him, he certainly would’ve lost you by now.
You are a whirlwind of energy and enthusiasm he’s come to find out, and he struggles to keep up with you and your curiosity. Every second in Liyue it seems you’ve found something new to look at.
“Xiao! Let’s go look at the Mingxiao lantern!”
“Okay-“
“Wait no, look at that food stand!”
“Weren’t we goi-“
“IS THAT A DOG.”
“I- nevermind.”
Xiao almost groaned in relief when you told him you wanted to have dinner at Xiangling’s restaurant. He just wanted to sit down and rest for a little bit, not used to the bustling social environment that is Liyue’s Lantern Rite Festival.
But maybe that was just wishful thinking.
That much is obvious to him when he overcooks his almond tofu for the fourth time. When he let out a nearly inaudible groan, the sound of your loud laughter rings throughout the restaurant. He looks over to see you doubled over on the floor, nearly crying at his expense.
“P-please Xiao. y-y-you idiot” you manage to wheeze out. “How- how- oh my god hold on I can’t breathe- how are you so bad at this?”
He should be angry. A mere mortal laughing at him, the Conqueror of Demons, a man with more blood on his hands than anyone will ever truly know, laughing at something so trivial like he’s never done wrong in his life. Like he’ll never do you wrong. He should be upset. He should push you away, tell you to never associate yourself with him again for your own protection.
Instead, for the first time in over 1000 years, Xiao laughs.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“What did you write?” you ask, sitting on the cliff above Liyue.
A questioning hum sounds from next to you at your sudden question. You don’t bother to look over, eyes still glued to the lantern-filled sky above you.
“On your lantern? I hear the citizens write their wishes on the lanterns in hopes that the Adepti will see them and grant them.” you explain.
“I know that. And nothing important.”
“Oh.”
A beat of awkward silence passes.
“I… have my last commission tomorrow, so I’ll be leaving Liyue. I’m due back in Mondstadt to report to Kaeya my findings.” you say reluctantly, fiddling with the lantern in your lap.
You’re greeted with silence, the carefree mood quickly turning somber.
Another beat passes before you hear rustling, and turn your head. You’re met with the sight of Xiao quickly standing. He releases his lantern before you could glimpse what he had written before turning to walk away. You balk, calling out to him.
“Dude! Yo! Green bean man! Where are you going? I thought we were going to release our lanterns together!”
He freezes, his posture rigid. He can hear the thinly veiled hurt in your voice, and his chest squeezes in a way he doesn’t want to understand.
“I’m being summoned. If I do not see you before your departure, I extend my well-wishings. Goodbye traveler.”
And then he’s gone, leaving you speechless, alone, and hurt.
Your hand shakily reaches down to grasp your lantern, reading the inscription once more before letting it go.
‘I wish I didn’t have to leave him behind.’
A single tear rolls down your cheek.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
High in the mountains above Liyue, a figure watches as a lone traveler releases their lantern. Clutching the lantern of a certain adeptus, the figure reads the neat writing once more.
‘I wish they didn’t have to leave me.’
Chuckling, the figure’s hand reaches to snatch the traveler’s lantern out of the sky.
“Just as I predicted,” the figure laments, reading the second wish. “the Yaksha finally has a weakness.”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You never thought you would be so hesitant to return to Mondstadt. But the thought of leaving Xiao your new Liyue friends was nearly enough to convince you to shackle yourself to your bedpost so you couldn’t leave.
You had never been one for rationality.
Letting out a deep sigh, you shoved the last of your few belongings into your travel pack. You stand in the doorway, taking one last glimpse at the room you had called home for the past few months, before heading downstairs.
Immediately, you are pulled into a bone crushing hug by a sobbing Xiangling. You faintly hear her blubbering, but it’s too quick and muffled by your shoulder to understand.
Your eyes quickly survey the room, flitting between the smiling faces of your friends. Desperately searching for someone you aren’t even sure you want to see.
Unfortunately (or fortunately- you still can’t tell), the adeptus was nowhere to be found. You lock eyes with Xinyan, who looks at you sympathetically. (You had met Xinyan after you bursted into Xiangling’s restaurant in tears following Xiao’s abrupt departure. She was understanding, but you still feel a bit awkward that her first impression of you was crying over a boy.)
You pry Xiangling off of you as much as you can, cupping her face so that her eyes meet yours. “Ling-Ling, this isn't goodbye forever! I’ll be back at some point, I promise!” you reassure yourself her. Fighting back tears of your own, you walk around to say your farewells to everybody else.
Your farewells are quick but emotional, and you find yourself crying as you walk out of the inn. A tap on your shoulder makes you turn around, and your (c) irises meet amber.
“Xia-“
He cuts you off, “Be careful on your way back. If you find yourself in trouble, summon me. Say my name and I’ll be there. Any time. Anywhere. Goodbye traveler.”
“Wait Xiao I-“ He’s gone before you can finish your thought.
Your hand that is reached out moves to whip the tears from your face.
‘It’s useless to just sit here and fucking cry,’ you think bitterly. ‘I’ve got shit to do, and I’m going to do it. It’s time to get serious and focus. Come on ____, you’re better than this!’
With that thought in mind, you straighten your back, effectively steeling yourself before heading out into the vast plains.
You don’t turn back once.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“I should’ve turned back! Why didn’t I turn back?” you shout over the loud roars of the Frostarm Lawachurl stomping after you. Thinking back on it, you don’t entirely know why you accepted a commission in Dragonspine of all places.
You really, really, really hate Dragonspine.
You mutter expletives under your breath, cursing whatever god was willing to listen for making you encounter this overgrown yeti. You’re tired, cold, hungry, and running on pure adrenaline at this point.
What would’ve happened if you had just stayed in Liyue?
That thought briefly flashes through your mind, and in your distraction you don’t notice you’ve slowed down.
That is, until an icy fist rams into your backside.
You can practically feel the bones in your spine shatter as you fly off the edge of the mountain. Summoning all of the energy you have left, you force open your wind glider before you can fall to your rocky doom.
Through hazy eyes you spot a shallow cave on the side of the mountain. You wheeze out a sigh of relief, floating down into the mouth of the cave. Inside, you spot remnants of what looks to be the camp of a traveler. Scattered books, a pot, and- oh thank archons- a makeshift fire pit. As you weakly light the fire, you silently thank the gods for blessing you with a Pyro Vision. It really saves your ass sometimes.
You let out a small laugh through chattering teeth, pulling your jacket closer to your body as you lay down on the cold floor. Pain flares in your shattered back, and you whimper quietly.
With frozen tears on your cheeks and the crackling sound of the fire, you finally doze off into a dreamless sleep.
Oh how you wish you didn’t.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When you do eventually wake up, you kind of wish you hadn’t.
First of all, your back is on fire. Your fingers feel like they’re frozen in place, and your head feels like you were hit upside the head by the hilt of Xinyan’s claymore. Your whole body is stiff and ridden with knots that you itch to stretch out but can’t due to the chains holding your wrists in place.
Wait.
Chains?
Your eyes widen almost comically as you stare at the glinting metal of your cuffs. Your head whips around to look at your surroundings.
“Ow, too fast too fast. Oh, my head…”
Recovering, you come to find you’re in some sort of jail cell, metal bars keeping you from the outside world, and- oh dear Lord Barbatos is that a rat?
Pfft. How cliche.
You roll your eyes, ignoring the pounding in your head.
“Hey! Is anyone out there? Because, uh, what the fuck? I have places to be! I need to go!”
Silence follows, until you hear the faint clacking of footsteps echoing through the dungeon. You can’t quite make out the features of whoever is walking down the dark hallway, so you squint your eyes at the silhouette.
“Well, well, well what do we have-“
Not in the mood for another cliche, you cut the figure off. “Save the corny villain speech, I don’t care.” you deadpan. “Just tell me where the hell I am before I blast you into next week.”
The figure stops right before your bars, and in the dim lighting you can finally make out her features. You bite back a noise of surprise, because you swear if this woman hadn't kidnapped you, you would probably try to court her. Her indigo irises look at you mockingly before she speaks.
“Blast me into next week…” she taps her chin in a mock ponder. “Oh! I don’t suppose you mean with this?” You look at her now outstretched arm, seeing your precious Pyro Vision dangling from a perfectly manicured finger. Your eyes shoot to your left hip where your Vision should be, seeing nothing. You’re at a loss for words. Your only plan of escape was with the use of your fire, and now you’re practically useless.
Dread fills your body. You faintly hear the woman giggle sadistically as you visibly deflate, but you’re too caught up with your thoughts to really care. Your mind is running a mile a minute, trying to pinpoint something that could possibly help you get out of here alive.
“Be careful on your way back. If you find yourself in trouble, summon me. Say my name and I’ll be there. Anytime. Anywhere.”
Xiao.
You could call Xiao.
La Signora’s sardonic smile widens when she sees your apparent internal battle. You’re thinking about it. She knows you’re thinking about it. She set things up perfectly, and now everything is falling into place. The normally composed woman is practically vibrating with giddiness.
“Do it dolly,” she taunts. “I know you want to. Call the adeptus dolly. Call him to you.”
“No.” your voice is firm.
“Do it.” hers is firmer.
“No.” your voice wavers, and her grin widens impossibly more.
“Do it!” she slams her hands on the bars, and you startle.
“N-no!” your resolve weakens further, and La Signora knows she has you.
She slowly opens your cell door, sauntering over to you with a sick look on her beautiful face. She leans down, her lips inches from your ear.
“Do. It.” she hisses.
You crack.
You wilt, whispering into your knees.
“Xiao, please. Help me.”
A flash of teal and black.
Your captor stands up. “Oh good you're here! Now things get interesting.” She turns to you with her arm raised. “Now go to sleep dolly. The adults are talking.” She brings her hand down on your neck.
The last thing you see before you fall under is the mask the adeptus swore to never wear again form in his hand.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For the second time in what feels like 3 days, you wake up feeling like you were hit with a claymore. Shutting your eyes again, you snuggle back into the warmth of the sheets. Something grabs onto your arm and a voice mutters, “Shh. Don’t move or you’ll hurt yourself more.”
Your mind catches up to you, and suddenly everything hits you.
One: why are you in a bed?
And two: who the hell is touching you?
Fighting the excruciating pain in both your head and your spine, you turn over to meet the worried eyes of your companion.
“V-verr Goldet? Is that you? Why is it you? Does this mean I’m back at the Wangshu Inn? Why am I back at the inn? How did I get here? Wh-”
“____ hey. Take a deep breath. To answer your questions, yes it is me. Yes you are back at the Wangshu Inn. You were taken by the Fatui- you know what? I think there is someone else more suited to tell you what happened. He’s been showing up outside your door for nearly a week waiting for you to wake up.”
You balk. “A week? I've been asleep for a full week?”
Verr Goldet laughs quietly. “Yes, a full week. Your injuries are severe, and your body needed time to heal. Frankly, I’m surprised you're awake even now. I will take my leave. I can feel him getting restless knowing you're awake.”
She turns to walk away, pausing in the doorway once more. “Please go easy on him. He’s never experienced this sort of… attachment before. He’s just a bit confused. He really has never meant to bring you any sort of anguish, he’s just doing what he’s always done.” You watch as she leaves the room, her form in the doorway being replaced by one you know all too well. You begin to lift your body to welcome him, and he rushes over to gently nudge you back down.
“Don’t strain yourself too much. Your spine is greatly injured, and Qiqi is gathering what she needs to try to fix the fractures. She should be here within the next day.” He pauses, sighing. “I suppose you would like to know what happened, right?” He doesn’t meet your eyes.
He breathes in once more before beginning his tale.
“You were taken by a woman named La Signora, who revealed herself to me as the Eight of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers. She had been following you for a while, and finally found an ideal moment to strike when you were in that cave in Dragonspine.” You are extremely confused. Why did La Signora decide to take you? Of what importance could you have been to the Fatui? Your confusion must have shown, because Xiao speaks again.
“I know you must be wondering why the Fatui would want you for seemingly no reason. She explained to me after I defeated her that the Fatui wants to wipe out all immortal beings. So she utilized what she found to be my weakness. Which is, well, you. Because of my apparent romantic feelings towards you. She saw our wishes on our lanterns during the Lantern Rite and...”
At this point you've drowned him out. ‘Apparent romantic feelings?’ How can he say that so matter-of-factly?
“Wait hold on back up. You-” you clear your throat awkwardly. “You like me?”
He looks at you strangely. “No I do not ‘like’ you. It has been brought to my attention that what I feel for you is called ‘love’ and that I am in love with you. And I am aware that you feel this love toward me too.”
He notices your silence and speaks up hesitantly. “Am- am I incorrect?”
The kicked-puppy voice almost has you flailing. You wave your arms wildly, and nearly scream “No! No. No you’re not- oh ow ow ow ow ow.” In your urgency, you strained your injuries. Again. Xiao’s eyes soften as he reaches out to lay you back down into bed, careful of your back. When the pain subsides, you speak again.
“No, you're not incorrect. I was just, taken aback, by how upfront you were. I do love you, a lot actually, and it’s very surprising that you feel the same way. I… I’m very happy.”
“Your face is extremely red. Are you running a fever?”
You weakly whack him in the arm, and he lets out a small laugh.
“I am just joking my love, I am not that dense.”
Your face flushes more with every word that comes out of his mouth.
“So are we going to kiss now? Since we are a couple in a romantic relationship I think we should.” You don’t know where your burst of confidence came from, but at his words you wrap your arms around his neck, yanking him down to your level. He braces himself with one arm on the bed, the other resting on your waist. Right as your lips are about to meet, you hear a thud and then an exasperated “Xiangling!”
You and Xiao look at each other, looks of equal annoyance present on your features. You push him up reluctantly.
“If you guys don’t open that door and get your sorry asses in here, I swear to Morax-”
The door opens slowly, and your friends shuffle, bearing sheepish grins. Your sword materializes in your hand, already glowing with fire. Xiao’s arm lifts to steady yours, and you mentally thank him for not making you look too out of commission. The glint in your eyes hint that you mean business, and Xiangling is the first to squeak out an apology.
“We’re sorry ____, we just wanted to know!”
Your eyes glint dangerously, and you nudge Xiao.
“Since I can’t exactly do anything, he will. Time to face the wrath of a Yaksha bitches!” you exclaim gleefully. “Xiao get them! Go!” you shoo him away with your hands.
Xiao shakes his head once more, before pushing himself off of your bedside. His jade polearm appears in his hand, and he stalks towards your friends. The door closes behind him and you’re left to your own thoughts. You think back to the words he’s said to you on many an occasion.
“You’re an idiot, mortal.”
You suppose you are an idiot. But maybe so is he. You’re just two idiots in love. At that thought, you laugh.
You suppose you'll get that kiss later.

Food in Netflix’s Series of Unfortunate Events: Season 3
It is over. I finally finished season 3 about 2 hours ago and needed the time to recover and process the ending. While I have only faint memories of the ending in the book, this ending seemed very different (and I want to say I liked it more? I just recall being let down by the way the books ended; however, I was quite young at the time...).
Here is the final set of food notes from the show. The final season was comparatively sparse, but there were some interesting culinary choices. I hope you enjoy!
(Also, since this is the final installment, if anyone enjoyed my rambling carefully curated notes on food in TV shows, I would happily take requests to do this for a different show in the future. It was fun and gave me much to think about in the kitchen.)
Today’s notes are brought to you by Glassworks - Opening played by Ólafsson (because that I what I’m listening to).
Food in The Slippery Slope
Sarsaparilla
What Olaf drinks and discards while driving. It is flat. The bottle helps Violet and Klaus determine which fork to take.
Coffee and Tea
What pretentious people drink according to Olaf
Absinthe
A random beverage that popped into Olaf’s mind.
Marshmallows
Made Brucie the Snow Scout Leader sick after eating too many.
I really want to make these! Gelatin is such a fun platform for cooking so many things! The real goal would be blooming marshmallow flowers with whiskied caramel hot chocolate!
Rutabaga
What the circus freaks plan on growing on their farm.
Hot Dogs
What Olaf’s cooks with this troupe.
Brandy Sidecar or Coffee
What Esme wants with Breakfast.
A Brandy sidecar is a cocktail of cognac, cointreau (orange flavored liqueur), and lemon juice. Sounds pretty tasty -- I think (I know next to nothing about drinks...).
Frozen Orange Juice
Found by Sunny in trunk.
She uses this to make Sorbet.
Salmon
Caught in the stricken stream by Hook-handed man and given to Sunny. She prepares Sashimi with this.
Hot Cider [X]
Quigley’s last meal with his mother. What saved him from the fire.
Canned Peaches
Quigley’s meal at Montgomery’s.
Montgomery had a lot of canned peaches (or just two cans) because the Hook handed man in season 1 is also eating canned peaches when posing as a detective. Nothing wrong with this -- canned peaches are delicious.
Poisonous Berries
Mr. Poe tries to help by finding Breakfast.
I often see poisonous berries as red in TV (I am thinking mostly of a specific seen in the Netflix Witcher series) and it made me curious if real poison berries are always red. Nope: nightshade (duh) is black, and several other harmful berries are also black/blue. Some are orange. Given the brightness of these berries I am going to guess they were Mezereon or Elderberry.
Granola Bar
Mr. Poe has these. Kit has some.
Poe always has granola bars.
Lox
Sunny’s idea for dinner
Pistachios
Lemony is saying something and thinks they are for everyone one.
Parsley Soda
What Sunny gets when she requests a fizzy drink.
Boysenberry Jam
The darkest Jam in the VFD fridge.
This really makes me want good jam or to try jamming. Roasted lamb and jam...not sure where I would easily source lamb right now and is likely to be a far greater headache than I care.
Olives
There were 5 green olives filled with pimento in the jar. It indicated the gathering was on Thursday.
Mustard
All I wrote is the last safe place. I don’t recall the details -- but it was probably a clue.
Mustard is my favorite condiment. I can (and have) eat it plain.
False spring rolls
What was prepared for a meal for Olaf’s troupe by Sunny and Hook handed man.
How did they get wraps on a mountain...maybe you can repurpose a part of a fish to use as wraps. The skin or various internal linings? Seems less appetizing / food safe.
Rutabaga (again)
What Olaf’s troupe wants to grow.
Food in The Grim Grotto
Chewing Gum
Phil only cooks meals with chewing gum.
Chewy Casserole
Chewing gum casserole.
In my experience heating gum or gummy like things often goes very poorly. You can add them towards the end of the cooking process to create some sort of layer -- but definitely not from the start.
Potato and Cod Chowder
Non-gum based meal that Sunny and Phil prepared.
Calamari
What Sunny thinks Olaf’s sonar symbol is.
I fully accept that the children are seriously smart, but where is Sunny learning all of this? Did the books have cooking books (I think so..)? I shall assume that Sunny demands to be read only cooking books as bed time stories.
Soft Pretzels
Olaf wants these. I do too -- I should make them!
Turmeric
In one of Esme’s evil laughs.
Cabernet
Olaf wants wine and gets lost in the octopus submarine looking for some. He pronounces it as Caber-NET.
Horseradish
Cure for the Medusoid Mycelium.
Taragon, Wasabi
Contents of kitchen cabinets while Sunny is sick.
The wasabi is what is used as a culinary substitute and cure. Interestingly, it is Mr. Bobby brand. Would anyone know if this has significance? Brand names in this universe are interesting.
Lemon Lime Soda, Gorgonzola Cheese, Birthday cake for Violet
Contents of the fridge while Klaus and Violet are looking for horse radish.
That is a damn impressive cake. Fondant is really well done. Can you make fondant from gum? Probably not, but Sunny is resourceful and likely found a suitable culinary substitute.
Sub Sandwich
Prepared by Hook-Handed man to delay Olaf form assisting in torturing the children.
Looks like a pretty standard sub on a softer baguette. It appeared to have sliced deli meat.
Chef Salad
Fernald’s analogy for people to emphasize that categorizing people as noble, good, bad, or evil is invalid.
Pig Eating Pork
Ok -- this one is not food, but I was amused by Olaf’s simile to describe his joy.
Food in The Penultimate Peril
The Picnic Basket
I absolutely lost my mind with this scene. We only briefly see the contents of the picnic basket as Violet removes the top layer to reveal the concierge disguises Kit prepared. I paused and replayed this seen maybe 10 times to examine what was in that top layer. I then needed to cross reference some incomplete descriptions with two large pastry books (thankfully they have an entrement section...). I feel reasonably successful:
Millefeuille [X]
This is napoleon. Adding a flavor to the custard is a great way to modernize this dessert.
Cream Puffs (Might be a profiterole) [X -- I’ve done eclairs]
Choux pastry is very forgiving and a good entry point into fancier pastries. It forms the basis of eclairs, cream puffs, and, if you are crazy, croquembouche.
3 Layer cake
Unclear what more to say. Since these are all french pastries, perhaps the sponge is genoise?
Mini Opera Cake
Opera cake is layers of Joconde sponge (almond sponge) flavored with coffee syrup, layered with italian butter cream, and then topped with chocolate ganache. It was something I planned on making before everything closed down (I can’t eat it myself X.x).
Madeleine or Beignet [X]
Since this was a picnic basket, I am leaning in favor of Madeleines. They fit the other set of deserts better than a Beignet.
Nut Entrement
I think is this another cake, but it is unclear. I can’t seem to source this one either. Maybe it is carrot cake! That often has nuts around the perimeter.
Sauvignon Blanc
Olaf’s wine of choice
Aqueous Martini
Jerome’s drink of choice.
Indian Food
Larry, in his last waiter position, poses in an Indian Restaurant. Poe orders a glass of milk.
The Barking Gin Distiller Dry Goods
Interesting brand on the bag belonging to a lady on the trolley during the sequence when Justice Strauss is searching for the Children.
Tea
In flash back with Kit and Esme. Kit likes her tea as bitter as worm wood and sharp as a double edged sword.
Sausages
Crow meat and an analogy for learning the Law (you don’t want to know how the sausage is made, just like you don’t want to know how the law works).
Too much pepper and makes the court audience cough.
Food in The End
Root Beer Float [X]
Lemony has one. It is his thirteenth.
Waffles
Partially consumed by the man following Lemony at the diner.
Mixed Nuts
All that is left to eat on the boat. Sunny offers some to Olaf, but he knocks it into the sea.
Ceviche
Since the islanders don’t have any spice, they eat raw fish.
I have never had this, but recall reading in a book about sushi how it was integrated by some sushi chefs in South America into more traditional Japanese cuisine.
Fermented Coconut Cordial
I have no idea how you could get anything resembling an opioid from fermenting coconut water. Unless Ish is adding something, this seems suspect. Fermenting something sweet and earthy also does not really sound appealing.
Wasabi and Wormwood
Sunny’s suggestions on how to treat the Medusoid Mycelium.
Wormwood and related foods appear often.
Apple
Modified by Bertrand and Beatrice to contain the sugars giving immunity to the Medusoid Mycelium.
Chocolate Cake [X]
SQUEEE this was adorable. Sunny makes a cake for Beatrice II’s first birthday.
Salad
Shared by Fiona and Fernald.
Root Beer Float
Shared between Lemony and Beatrice II as she tells him the remaining story.
I want to believe that this is his 14th root beer float.
Black Bean and Mango Salad
Sunny makes this during the Finnish Female Pirates incident as told by Beatrice II.
This sounds amazing! Slightly ripe mango with a citrusy black bean mixture would be delightful!

Jorge
And now the story begins
The ride to the Spaceport was uneventful, but Jorge felt a little out of it after a few minutes of conversing with the Spaceport's receptionist. He felt a certain withdrawal, as though he were watching a bad TV episode on his way to the local diner.
He was not hungry, but he had decided to subjugate his appetite for the time being, if only out of pedantry. He had finished his mocha with extra cream and coffee in it and was sipping it now, the mug halfway full and the brim drooping slightly over his eyes. He had remains of bread crumbs on his chin and his usual pairing of small green beans and stringy white protein sat idle on the upper lip of his mug. He would gladly have finished it all at this moment if he thought he could manage it, but the joke's on him. The truffle that had remained on the bottom of the mug had begun to curl and stretch, its gelatinous shell coating every surface of his mug until he could see little circular patterns of the stuff nestled in unbroken circles, like pieces of bird nest in a puzzle, watching him from every surface of every mug. Another sip and the temperature in the mug rose. It was getting hotter.
He had started his work again. The meeting room at the Spaceport was a cage with curtains. On one side of the room there was an enormous open window. On the other was a more conventional wooden enclosure, high enough that sunlight entering through its windows pooled on to the backs of the desks in the room. As usual in work-circles at the Spaceport it was had its own set of chairs, and so Jorge, listening to the grubby, insistent sounds of the Spaceport's workshops, plumped for the last seat left in the cage. The wall behind him was still more open and Jorge backed himself toward it. He reclined slowly into the plaque of the new and heated chair and found that the phone on the desk bore his name and that of the company outside his ear, and that the dull staccato of the Spaceports work software, its icons glinting in the weak, amber light of the window, replaced his only other sound.
The meeting opened with a program summary from Andrew Massachusetts. The scene vanished, and he met again with a nation already convinced of the Spaceports future as a world-renowned manufacturer of sophisticated machinery, donating its talent and resources to achieve the necessary goals of the HTML5 revolution: disciplined, clean, functional, without superfluous flickering or spilled pixels. Businessmen of all stripes fanned out in neat roped lines, guided by the sort of half-formed reports designed to hook the timid or the unwary into a resolution process already in motion, and with the help of slight, innocent tics that had made little of in the other companies de rigeur. Some leaped at the chance to mop up, to be the first to declare it would no longer be flunking its annual progress. Into hiding places like cupboards and closets everything had fled, so everyone, Andrew Massachusetts included, perked up and ran after any object out of place.
And oh, the objects. Everything, every machine, every piece of scrap that did no work and was nowhere to be seen, was scrutinized by a mind as quick and quick-witted as any parallel Newcomb, as studious with its own ellipsis as Pericles, but controlled by the laws of physics rather than the Hesiods and A picture was being painted which had not existed before, a picture of nothingness, of not-being.
It was a strange bubble. The staff was made of nearly pure geniuses, but confidence gushing into this bubble from the usual places quickly poured into a second bubble of its own, the one that bubbles when you're sick. The Heart of the Matter was full of stress and uncertainty, a place where people did the work that the theoretical physicists dispatched to the face of the world. And no one was above that limit, not even Andrew Massachusetts, who after all was a young man with publications to sell and a plan to set in motion.
Andrew Massachusetts had a name: he'd given himself that. None of his documents matched his own name. The papers had been written by a man named Andrew Brown, but he'd given himself the title of "Andrew Massachusetts" to make it clear that he was not a mere employee of the company, but a key member. And he'd found a way to get himself in the same room as the guys with the power, the guys who had the few names that mattered.
The papers had been boring. Lots of math and diagrams, but he still hated it, and so he decked himself out in the clothes of a simple man, a simple capitalist, and started to write. He'd do the same thing again, anytime.
By the time the meeting was over, he'd written a proposal, and a manifesto, and a book, and a TV show, and a movie, and a whole industry. And he was over the moon.
The meeting had only lasted a few hours, but it felt like an age. The world had changed, and nothing was going to stop it from changing any more. The world was full of promise and promise was a hard thing to hold on to.
The door opened and a woman stepped in, and she didn't look like the same woman who'd walked in a few hours before. A nightgown. A hat. And a long, shaggy mane of white hair that fell to her shoulders, framing her face. The women of the company all had long, shaggy hair but this one's hair was wild, quick and wild, and it hung in loose waves over her shoulders. She was beautiful.
She walked into the room and she sat in a chair next to Andrew Massachusetts, and she put her hand on Andrew Massachusetts' knee. It was the first time she'd done it. And Andrew Massachusetts did not react, because Andrew Massachusetts had come to the very clear, firm and firm-eyed conclusion that this woman was his enemy, and she was not to be permitted near him.
And she sat, and she took the seat next to Andrew Massachusetts' chair. And she sat.
Andrew Massachusetts was still there, but he was not himself. The world had changed, and he did not know how to change with it.
