Things to Consider When Writing Setting
As a writer who has been coming up with a specific story concept for the past nine and a half years, I have a lot of trouble when it comes to writing and, oftentimes, imagining the setting of particular scenes. I almost always one detail in my head, but struggle to come up with any other features. Anyone can think, "Okay, my character is in a parking lot". But we, need to think beyond that.
Okay, first things first, decide a few things before we start consulting the big(ish) list.
-Where does this scene take place? (Pt. 1) That means the type of location. Are they in a forest? At home? In a Starbucks? There are a near-endless list of places for your character to be, but it's crucial to make sure you know where this person is before building from there. In my opinion, this is probably the most important aspect to know before attempting to write about the setting. Know. Where. They. Are.
-Where does this scene take place? (Pt. 2) This means the country or province. Consider every aspect of this place (I'll be making a post about world-building soon for those who need it). What are the geographical, cultural, and climate-related features. Think about how would these features impact the way your character experiences their environment.
-When does this scene take place? I'm talking about the time period, time of day, and time of the year. All of these factors will change what your character sees, hears, smells, everything.
Now that you've (hopefully) answered the three questions above, let's look at the big list of ideas. These are just some ideas I thought of while writing and editing this list, there are so many more ideas that are not on here. Try not do get overwhelmed by the list, and just look at it one section at a time. Play with some of these ideas in your head, on paper, a doc, whatever, and decide what feels write (get it?) for your project!

Hanadan character name meanings
As it is common with anime/manga characters, the characters in Hana Yori Dango have names that relate to their storyline. In this post, I'll attempt to translate the names of the main characters from Japanese.
Warning, long post under the cut:
Before we begin
All their names are pretty much the same in mandarin, with the exception of Tsukushi/Shancai, so these translations partially fit Meteor Garden too. (but I don't know mandarin, so I can't give you more than this, sorry)
Due to the way korean names work (and the unfortunate implications of giving korean characters japanese sounding names), they were completely renamed in the K-drama. I'm gonna make a separate post for their korean names later.
They were also renamed in the thai drama but I know nothing about thai, so I won't even try to translate those, sorry (I make one speculation in this post and that's it, lol).
Japanese names, when written in japanese characters, have the family name coming first and personal name second. That's the order I'm gonna use here.
I make a few stretches here and there because I'm not a native japanese speaker nor a specialist in japanese name meanings. This was translated with the help of two japanese dictionary apps/sites and my obsession with this fucking manga.
Now that you read all of this, let's begin with our protagonist:
Makino Tsukushi (牧野つくし)
Her name is the most obvious one because the story revolves around it, but lets take a look at it anyway
牧野 (Makino) Let's look at the kanji for it separately:
牧 (Boku, Maki) - breed, care for, shepherd, feed, pasture
野 (ya, no) - plains, field, rustic, civilian life
牧野 (Makino), can also be read as Bokuya, which means "pasture land" or "ranch".
Her name つくし (Tsukushi) doesn't use Kanji, but it's mentioned many times in that story that is a type of weed plant.
If I were to put everything together and attempt to translate it, it turns into something like… Pasture land weed.
Tumblr media
Poor girl.
Doumyouji Tsukasa (道明寺司)
道明寺 (Doumyouji) - If you look at these characters apart, they don't mean anything in particular
道 (Dou) means road, path, street, teachings (like in the martial art judo, or the art of tea ceremony, chadou)
明 (myou) means wisdom, mantra, light, bright [insert obvious joke about F4 thailand here].
寺 (Ji) is a counter for temple, which is why Yuuki's ex, in the double date in the manga, makes fun of him asking if his family lived in a temple. 寺 is also a radical in the kanji 時 (toki) (hour) and the word 時間 (jikan) (time), which I guess is where they took Thyme`s nickname from.
But 道明寺 (Doumyouji) as a whole is the name of a japanese street candy. Kamio once said on her twitter that the F4 was based off a dango and all of them were supposed to be named after candy, but she ended up scrapping the idea because she didn`t have time to think of candy names for all of them. Doumyouji was the only one that kept the original naming concept.
Now let's go to the rest of his name:
司 (Tsukasa, Shi) - director, official, rule. (Fun fact: there is a verb, tsukasadoru, that means "to be in charge, to manage, to rule, to govern, to control")
This one is obvious, Tsukasa is the leader of the F4.
If I were to put both names together and translate his full name it would mean something like… Candy ruler. He is the leader of the dango that is the F4. 🍡
Tumblr media
He doesn`t sound that threatening when we put it like this lol
Hanazawa Rui (花沢類)
花沢 (Hanazawa) - Let`s look at the words separately:
花 (hana) means flower
沢 (sawa) means valley, swamp, marsh, brilliance, grace
Hanazawa would mean something like "flower valley" (I don't know if it could translate as "flower grace")
類 (Rui) means sort, kind, variety, similar
If I were to translate his full name, it would be something like: "A kind of flower valley" or, if I really stretch it, "Like a flower valley"
And notice this funny thing: Tsukasa and Rui's names are a walking spoiler! Hana Yori Dango, the name of the manga itself, is oficially translated as "Boys over flowers", but another translation of it could be "Candy (Dango) over flowers". If Doumyouji is the candy leader and Hanazawa is a flower valley… Damn, I wonder who the main character is going to choose. /s
Now to my favorite boy Nishikado Soujirou (西門総二郎):
(西門) Nishikado:
西 (nishi) means west
門 (kado, mon) means gate and, as I recently found out, "branch of learning based on the teachings of a single master". Obviously, his name comes from the second meaning.
So, Nishikado would mean "Branch of learning (tea ceremony) from the west" or "Lineage of (tea ceremony) masters from the west".
With "Soujirou", let's start with Jirou first:
二 (ni, Ji) - Two. That's literally the kanji for the number 2. No mystery here.
郎 (rou) - Counter for sons.
So if it's not obvious yet, 二郎 (Jirou) is used in names to mean that the person is the second son. You see it in anime character names all the time, look for it, you'll find it.
総 (Sou) - whole, all, overall, entire
The "Sou" part is maybe not supposed to mean anything in particular, but if you are still reading this long ass post you want to see me try to find a meaning for it. So if i stretch it, maybe it could be "full second son" (which doesn't make much sense) or, if I really stretch it, it could maybe mean "Second of all sons"
So his name would be: "Second son overall from the west lineage of (tea ceremony) masters"
Boy that's not a name, that's a whole ass title. 😭
And, yes, his older brother is called Souichirou, and by this logic his younger brother is probably called Sousaburou, or something like that.
Last but not least: Mimasaka Akira (美作あきら)
美 (mi, bi) means beauty, beautiful
作 (saka, sa, tsuku) means prepare, to make, build (it's the same kanji used in the verb Tsukuru - to make, to produce)
Mimasaka would mean something like "Make beauty" or "beautifully made"
Akira (あきら), on the other hand… it doesn't use a Kanji. It's the same case as Tsukushi, except with her we know the meaning because the character herself says it. But Akira doesn't, so i have no idea what it could mean since we don't have the kanji for it.
Tumblr media
(sorry Akira)
But translating what it can, it would mean "Akira makes beauty" or even "The beautifully made Akira" (which at least sounds cool asf, come on)

Find the Word Game XXXI
tagged by: @space-writes!! my words: bite, fight, resent, compliment tagging: @drippingmoon, @pertinax–loculos, @druidx, and open tag! your words: alive, find, never, hide, truth, scary
bite (Eternal)—
Mydhassa frowned. "What about the residents of Andromeda? Do they get a say?" DeCosta's hands dropped delicately onto her lap. "We were going to send someone in to attempt to reach a diplomatic agreement with the governing bodies of Andromeda." Her gaze lingered on Thrive. "...But we lost track of him for two hundred years." Roundtree turned to him. "We apologize for the inhumanity of using you for our own purposes." "Senator," Thrive said, unimpressed, "I have been used for others' gain since my birth. Your arrogance, while hardly surprising, makes no unique enough impact on me to insult or otherwise." Warren had to bite his tongue to stop himself from reacting to that.
fight (Eternal)—
A thunderous shake of the ground, and the ocean erupted. Water touched the sky, pellets of droplets shot at the cliffside, and lightning arced through the clouds, illuminating the roiling, abyssal sea below them and the swelling crest in the distance. Warren was plunged into a cold snap, and he shuddered violently. "Get to shelter," Thrive demanded of those not directly fighting. He hadn't had the mental capacity to keep himself from getting soaked by the rain. He swept his hands over the ground and fire belched from between his fingers, and he swiped viciously at the Emmuli figures around him and ———, his face glowing with the light from both the flames and his eyes. "Keep everyone safe!" A sudden tsunami rushed in from the ocean, taller than the cliff, barreling toward them at an almost unrealistic speed. Thrive planted himself at the edge of the cliff and shook one hand out, throwing it skyward to encompass everyone and everything on it, quintupling the strength, and he used his other hand to spread the shield behind him. The colossal boom of the torrent impacting against Thrive's shield made Warren wince, and he reached up to cover his ears to find they'd been burned to the layer of skin beneath. Thrive almost buckled, but he dug his feet into the dirt to stabilize. White water, dark water, the speed twice that of a raging river over everyone's heads. This continued for minutes. The light in Thrive's eyes rose until it all but provided those shielded with plenty of it to see the black fog settling on the ground.
resent offense (Aurora)—
"Yes, but you also have an AI…" "An AI who is not only fully incapable of holding a baby, but probably doesn't even know the difference between one of them and a particularly lively doll." Scotty lit up [Guetry's] wrist device as well as his tattoos. "I take full offense at that," he said in his usual calm, soothing cadence. "The baby to which you're referring did exceptionally well in the plastics stress test." Guetry sputtered, choking around the gulp he'd just taken. Warren clapped him on the back again, making a face as he wasn't sure if Guetry was disturbed more than he was laughing at that.
compliment (Aurora)—
Tilting his head, Thrive's expression took on a curious form, like he'd just realized the most cherished thing he possessed was actually a priceless artifact or piece of art. "You were born on the first of June during an unscheduled meteor shower. An unscheduled meteor shower on a planet that, even at the time, had the ability to detect foreign objects passing its orbit months in advance. Has that never seemed odd to you?" Warren shrugged, hugging himself to hide his anxious shivering. "It never really occurred to me, I guess. I'd heard it so many times when I was growing up that it kinda just sounded normal." "Your intuition is unparalleled, except perhaps by that of the clairvoyant-empaths and elder silhou. You've survived every attempt on your life, accidental or otherwise, with minimal physical damage. Your gift of reasoning is phenomenal, as you've talked even a bloodthirsty venevan leader out of sending your teammates to an irradiated planet." "Right now all I'm hearing is a myriad of compliments and not a hell of a lot of explanation."

'MH370: The Plane That Disappeared' Is Another Netflix Disaster
Tumblr media
Netflix is back at it again with more true crime style documentaries. This time they covered the disappearance of flight MH370.
The documentary is set up as a limited series. They interview many different people involved. But the main person they follow is a reporter who says everything as a matter of fact but most of the narrative they try to paint with their theories is so laughably outlandish and unreasonable.
The theories here are seriously outrageous and there's no reason for this exist. It's almost worse than if this was actually just a stupid Shane Dawson conspiracy video. Shane Dawson does make an appearance in this, by the way.
But where they lose the audience is when the narrator starts saying it was Russia planting evidence after they blew up the plane or a meteor hit the plane and the government is lying about it. Seriously, they say this.
It's trash. Netflix is going down the tubes with original content. Not sure who this is even for. Skip it.

[M4F] {Long term} Multiple plots available for detailed/semi-detailed. Sensitive Kinks (discord preferred but not required)
Includes: Raceplay, Breeding, Harem & More
1. A heavily weighted raceplay roleplay where women in government or positions of power are forced into becoming members of the cult worshiping BWC, and then used to take over nations or territories expanding the influence of BWC. Can involve superhuman.
2. A church has opened up in a small neighbourhood and they are indoctrinating the house wives into big white cocksleeves. The mysteries of their hypnotic ceremonies and pull for more local girl expands as the truth of what they truly worship becomes whole.
3. An apocalypse has forced people into tribes and bands to survive leading for battles for resources. Generations down the line and new species of plants and animals have come back remnants of the apocalypse still roam the earth e.g. Zombies, mechafauna, aliens. I move into the area using my special tonics to show you the grace of BWC.
4. Your dad/uncle/brother/dad’s best friend finds you on a night out or after on. Who knows what he gave you but when you wake up your hazy and his fat body is infront of you BWC in hand. Days later you are out and run into a friend did you want to show her what happened.
5. A meteor lands on earth with an alien that transforms a man. You are apart of the team countering it what happens as you learn of his ability to infect and control women. The slow corruption over the world.
6. The vicious demon lord, your party is to challenge and fight. However you underestimate his power and fall to become one of his. Maybe becoming his pet, breeding stock, toy or queen.
7. The world is populated by women, men are now scarce and rare. This leads groups of women to for tribes and and packs often lead by a singular man or pair of men called cumlords. Some groups of women keep men under their control using forced feminisation and strength of numbers. The lack of men has led to both sexes to generate new powers and strengths. Men are naturally stronger than before, with more stamina and greater production of sperm. Women have womb marks.

The Neighborhood Watch S2 Ep4: Keep Greenville Weird
The month-long hiatus is finally over! So much happens to everyone except John, who has a nice day at work.
[Summary: Song takes Amira to be fixed and discovers the consequences, while Markus makes bad decisions. John tries his best at his new job, and Louis sparks up conversation with a conspiracy theorist.]
We pick up where we left off: in the charred wreckage of Song's house. Song and Fatima assure Amira she's fine as they wrap a scarf around the injured part of her face, while Amira insists she's fine and is very confused; she doesn't seem to realize she's a robot.
Louis and Markus show up and immediately begin to help putting out the fires as the trio above head to the Sumpath house; they're going to Arjun, Amira's father, so she can be fixed.
Some of the neighbors have started to come over to see what's happening; Shelby is one of them, still in her pajamas and looking like she didnt get much sleep. Bob Patterson, number one asshole neighbor, tries to come over to help- but with their current mental state, Markus is somehow convinced he's behind the explosion of Song's garage and threatens him. Bob puts his hand on the handle of his gun as a warning, and immediately Markus pulls out their knife and stabs him straight through the palm. Louis wanted to try and interfere, but upon seeing this, is all "oh nevermind, yikes"
Meanwhile, Song and Fatima take Amira over to Arjun, who takes them down to the high-tech basement of their house. He takes out a duffel bag full of gadgets, all with a logo- Song recognizes it as the logo of a company that exclusively works with her father. Arjun says a code to shut Amira down as he goes to fix her, and he's like "Song you can't tell anyone about this," and Song goes "alright let me cast a geas on myself so if i ever Do tell someone i'll die" Song and Fatima go upstairs, and right before the basement door closes behind them, they hear Arjun break down and cry.
With the fires almost out, Markus notices there's some weird melted plastic in the grass, so they scoop it up and leave. Louis finds the source of the explosion, the propane tank, and also a bunch of shattered gnomes. At this point he just goes "man, nothing is normal in this fucking town, jesus christ," and starts muttering to himself about it before deciding fuck it, he's going home- but then he sees that Ken, our resident conspiracy theorist npc, has been watching him. Ken tries to act all natural like he wasn't obviously spying, and asks what happened ["Was this a meteor, or an underground volcano..?"]. Louis has an idea, and invites Ken to chat with him, because perhaps this man has info that can help us. Kenneth is so so hyped about this offer to chat, because no one's been interested in his theories before! They head to the coffee shop.
John didn't notice the explosion as he's driven to work; I rolled too high. When he gets dropped off at the city hall, he meets up with Clara, his coworker. They're assigned to be at the corner of Main and Sapphire Street; they chat as the walk there, and John learns about her favorite places to hang out- turns out the reason they haven't met despite her being here her whole life was because they hung out at different spots, besides the coffee shop. He mentions it's been hard for him to get a job since he doesn't have a government ID, and Clara asks if he's an illegal immigrant- she then apologizes for asking that, and John says it's okay, since humans are curious by nature. He says he'll go with the immigrant explanation for now, and the two of them reach the street corner.
They speak to passerby; John learns from Joseph Miller, the park ranger, that the weird plant seeds grow very quickly, and Jebediah Ford, the Minister of the church, wished all of the other employees to get better. John asks Clara about this, and it turns out that some of the people at this job have been getting strangely ill; Not even Dr. Sutherland, the town's miracle doctor, can figure out what's going on- in fact, one of his patients has been moved to one of the city hospitals. John then spots Jack attempting to empty the garbage cans around town; the man seems sick, and he's wearing sunglasses. John realizes his symptoms are awfully similar to what he saw when Karen Patterson was sick in Season One... He's connecting the dots.
Speaking of the strange plants, Markus notices that one's been growing in their house- the seed they grabbed in s1 has been growing, and is overtaking one of their bug terrariums. When they try to get near it with their knife, the plant shoots them with thorns. The roots tear easily as Markus rips the plant off the terrarium, and they put it down the garbage disposal. Deciding not to stay in their house for a bit, they grab the melted plastic from earlier and heads over to Emmett's house- the AI analyzes the stuff, saying it appears to be fake skin. Markus suggests maybe Emmett should talk to Arjun about it- they guy worked for the government, after all, unbeknownst to Emmett. Markus leaves, and heads over to the Patterson's.
Over at the Sumpaths, Fatima is telling Song that she Arjun have always wanted a kid but it just wouldn't work out, so Arjun, being an engineer, built one. She says there was a lot of trial and error to get things right and that she still has nightmares about it sometimes, but they care about Amira very much. She starts to mention something about how it's a bit hard regarding something- but then Arjun and Amira walk out of the basement; she's on her phone like nothing had happened. And Arjun introduces her ["Amira, this is Ms O'Sullivan, she just moved in to the neighborhood."], and Song's player pieces together that Amira has completely forgotten the entire events of them game. Song and Amira practically re-enact how they met for the first time, before the witch excuses herself and begins to head out; but not before inviting Fatima over for coffee later.
At the Patterson's, Markus is snooping around the perimeter of their house. The lights are on in the basement, so Markus heads over to the side to look in through one of the basement windows. Inside, they see Bob with a medkit, fixing up the hand that Markus had stabbed earlier. Observing through the window, Markus sees there's something mounted on the wall much like a hunting trophy: It's the skull of a giant feline with antlers, and next to his is an entire wall full of weapons- this man is a monster hunter. Markus decides to walk around and knock on his door.
Song sees a moving truck outside of Lucretius (aka Lestat)'s home; he greets her, expressing sympathies about the explosion and how he would offer her a place to stay, but he's moving to another house on the block since his current one is too infested with bugs. He says that if her house is still in repair by the time he's finished moving in, he can let her stay for a bit- In the meantime, though, he asks if she'd like to head downtown with him and grab a bite to eat?
But Song looks over and sees two cars: a sleek black car, like the kind her father's employee's drive, and a police car. She declines Lestat's offer and excuses herself, and heading over to the cars to see what's up. One of the cops, Jason Chen, is putting up police/caution tape around the debris of her garage; he's not doing a good job but he's trying. The other cop is approaching the Patterson's house, and is revealed to be Bob's son.
Louis and Ken arrive at the coffee shop and are greeted by Jewel, the teen at the counter. They order coffee- Ken's order is very pretentious, while Louis gets an americano. Jewel spells his name wrong, and when he mentions this a voice from one of the booths- Tawny Evergreen, her boss- says that she's not allowed to spell the customer's names correctly. Louis gives Jewel a 50 dollar tip.
The two of them go to sit down. Ken is super enthusiastic about this, bringing out folders and everything, and Louis, who had already been regretting this, finally declares that this was a mistake and starts to leave. He tells Kenneth that his level of enthusiasm is too much, he's too into this, and that deters people away.
Ken gets upset and pleads with Louis to stay, saying that no one ever wants to listen to what he has to say, and how there's so much happening in town but he's the only one who can see it- and as Louis tries to walk away Ken grabs his arm; his eyes go white and his grip tightens, before he blinks and stumbles back. "[Our new neighbor's name] is LESTAT?"
Notes and Thoughts:
Shelby Nicole Waters my beloved, why are you tired? Im suspicious and reading too much into this
Once again, Louis continues to be the funniest PC in the entire game, it's so entertaining when he talks to himself.
HOORAY JOHN LAUGHED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN S2 <3<3
The title is taken from a patch on Ken's jacket!
We all started yelling at Markus's player for the garbage disposal decision, but really that's Such a good storytelling thing to do. Let's go bestie let's make it worse /lh
I'm very happy Emmett made an appearance again! I was worried he would only be a s1 character, so it's neat he's back! I also have a more concrete design in my head for him, so hopefully I can sketch him out soon
FATIMA. WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU HAVE NIGHTMARES, HELLO???
God the favor Bob owes Markus means so much more if you consider he was probably worried he'd have to kill his wife in s1
LESTAT STAY AWAY FROM SON. BITE MAIM KILL
Markus is SO getting arrested oh my god
If I had a nickel for every time there was a blond prophetic conspiracy theorist in my ttrpg games, I'd have two nickels!
I don't think Ken is able to control his ability/what he sees! It seems to be activated by physical touch- good thing he didn't come into contact with any of the other Main Cast, yeah?
I am very very happy this game is back! We'll find out what happens next in two weeks! <3

Of Mutants And Monsters
Possible backstory ideas for each main character
Leo-in the late 1800s, he was a teenager who got cursed with immortality. Possibly by the organization he’s working for, possibly from another group, maybe even just a rando who can do that, not sure. Either way, it was a curse placed on him. He wasn’t born like that.
Raph-they don’t know it yet, but raph was once a human child. He was exploring the swamp one day when he accidentally came across shady men dumping toxins in the water. They murdered the child and dumped the body in the swamp. The toxins reincarnated the boy into a plant monster with no memory of who he was.
Donnie-is a “mermaid” (mermaid in this universe are VERY different from how they’re portrayed. Being moreso aquatic (fish, shellfish, turtles and such) humanoids than a human with a fish tail. Was born into a mermaid civilization that got wiped out by some sort of organization (not sure who yet) and was taken as a baby, meaning he has no memory of his heritage or even really knows what exactly he is.
Mikey-was made by a scientist. The scientist wanted to try to find a way to bring his son back using electricity. Instead of getting a Frankenstein situation, the young boys body was seemingly incinerated from the electricity. What actually happened was the boys dead body and mind fused with the electricity. Mikeys “”birth”” ended up killing the scientist. He was stuck in an unstable electrical form until he was discovered to be alive and was contained using the suit.
April-her father was captured by aliens and his dna was used with that of the alien queen in order to make an heir to the throne and ultimate weapon for their conquering society. Her creation was done on earth, allowing the government to find her and take her away from the aliens and use themselves as a weapon.
Casey-already wrote a story on this but a couple extra details to be discovered: his dad was very negligent, which is why Casey doesn’t care about him. The radiation from the meteor that changed him was intentionally made. It was from a planet that an alien species (possibly the same ones Aprils descended from) mutated into a planet of monsters they could use as guards and weapons and such. A galaxy corp had the planet destroyed, finding the people on it unsaveable due to the mutations destroying their minds. But didn’t account for the planet’s radiation being strong enough to stay on the debris possibly flying to other planets.
Middy-was indoctrinated into a secret force at 15 to be a secret super soldier. Was given super strength, agility, durability and such from a super soldier serum but was transferred to work at the facility as they found her strong unbreakable empathy to be a problem for a soldier.
Note: these are a work in progress

In January, after New York-based short seller Hindenburg Research released a report accusing Adani Group of accounting fraud and stock manipulation, the Indian conglomerate defended itself by appealing to nationalism. “This is … a calculated attack on India, the independence, integrity and quality of Indian institutions, and the growth story and ambition of India,” the group said in a 413-page response refuting the allegations.
It is no surprise that Adani Group tied itself to India’s “growth story.” The industrial empire of Gautam Adani, the group’s founder, has been key to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for India, which centers on big infrastructure projects as drivers of growth. In turn, Adani’s support for Modi’s nation-building plans, from airports to green hydrogen plants, has propelled his conglomerate’s meteoric rise. From 2014 to December 2022, Adani Group’s market capitalization soared from $6.5 billion to more than $223 billion.
Hindenburg’s report triggered a sudden reversal, however. The value of Adani Group’s publicly traded stocks soon fell by more than half—a rout that has continued a month after the report’s release. Modi has chosen to remain quiet about the affair, even as it has raised serious questions about India’s economy.
If Adani Group seeks refuge from criticism by tying its success to that of India’s, then the converse must also be reckoned with: The collapse of its shares represents a stress test for India’s growth project. It has cast doubt on whether Modi’s strategy of propping up a few favored corporate titans can translate into lasting results on the ground. And, beyond that, whether Modi’s India can deliver on hopes that it could become a driver of global economic growth, as China was for the past three decades.
Modi’s rise has long been intertwined with that of Adani’s. As chief minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014, Modi made his name through his so-called Gujarat model of development, with its large infrastructure projects, such as dams, extensive highways, and solar power plants. Adani was critical not just to constructing many of these projects but also to bringing big business around to the idea of Modi as a potential prime minister. After Modi was elected in 2014, he flew from Gujarat to his new home of New Delhi in Adani’s private jet.
As Modi became India’s most popular leader since the republic’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, Adani’s business interests expanded. His conglomerate partnered with the government on critical infrastructure projects within India and, increasingly, abroad. Since Modi entered office, Adani’s net worth increased by more than 5,000 percent to $150 billion in September 2022, making him Asia’s richest man before the scandal. His wealth came largely on the back of winning government contracts; expanding into strategic sectors, such as clean energy and defense; and building critical infrastructure projects. For instance, Adani Group secured seven out of the eight airports that the Indian government leased out to private companies. These kinds of contracts, in turn, led to more interest in Adani Group stock from investors.
The government has undoubtedly placed its trust in Adani, but the Hindenburg report could be a stumbling block in Modi’s plans to ensure that India remains the world’s fastest-growing major economy. After the brutal stock rout, the group called off a $2.5 billion share sale and had to delay its expansion plans. A margin call followed, leading Adani to prepay a $1.1 billion loan. Meanwhile, French energy giant TotalEnergies has put on hold a $4 billion investment in an Adani Group green hydrogen project.
Over his tenure, Modi has been unwilling or unable to push through structural reform that would allow more companies to enter new sectors without significant risk-taking. He therefore has no option but to depend on national champions, such as Adani. But even among Indian billionaires, Adani is unique. Very few businesspeople enjoy the government’s confidence, can navigate dizzying state regulation, and, most of all, are willing to risk enormous amounts of capital.
In 2015, Credit Suisse published its House of Debt report, which examined the precarious debt levels of 10 prominent Indian business groups with a significant presence in various infrastructure sectors. Out of the 10 groups, many have ended up in bankruptcy courts in recent years, while others have pursued debt consolidation plans. Only one group—the Adani conglomerate—has continued to borrow and invest at a breathtaking pace.
The Economist has estimated that the combined revenues of companies controlled by Adani and fellow tycoon Mukesh Ambani, chair of India’s Reliance Industries, are equivalent to 4 percent of India’s GDP. Firms controlled by the pair also account for nearly a quarter of the capital spending of all publicly traded non-financial firms.
While many analysts fret over whether Adani Group is too big to fail, the more pertinent question is whether Adani has been too integral to the Indian economic project to fail.
Modi now faces a difficult dilemma. On the one hand, he relies heavily on large infrastructure development delivered by India’s billionaires. For example, Adani plans to develop massive renewable energy projects—and without them, India would find it challenging to fulfill its commitment to meet 50 percent of its energy requirements with renewables by 2030.
On the other hand, if Modi continues to protect Adani—as India’s opposition has alleged—by not addressing Hindenburg’s allegations, he runs the risk of undermining the credibility of India’s corporate governance and, by extension, its growth narrative.
Although India’s financial regulatory institutions are far from perfect, India has an established history of investigating and punishing financial fraud. The Adani Group scandal, however, has cast doubt on the ability of these institutions—such as the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the country’s capital markets regulator—to operate independently.
It’s worth asking whether the Adani saga could have been anticipated, investigated, and defused long before Hindenburg came along if watchdogs had done their job.
Consider, for instance, a puzzling question that Hindenburg has sought to address: What explains the mind-boggling rise in the price of many Adani Group stocks? The price-to-earnings ratio of Adani Enterprises, the conglomerate’s flagship entity, went from 37.6 to 343.9 in just two years. But as experts have pointed out, growth of that nature is typically seen in companies in the technology sector, not brick-and-mortar industries.
There could be innocuous explanations, but the fact that the company’s board of directors didn’t examine the issue publicly opened the door for worrying allegations put forth by Hindenburg. In particular, the short seller has alleged that Adani Group’s stocks are being inflated by the conglomerate itself through secretive offshore entities.
This brings us to the question of what India’s stock market and banking regulators were doing. Long before Hindenburg came along, news outlets had pointed to the existence of three Mauritius-based funds that appeared to only invest in Adani Group companies and whose ultimate ownership was opaque. Why weren’t these funds forced to furnish details of their ownership structure at any point in the last few years and nip allegations of “round-tripping” in the bud?
In addition, SEBI continued to sign off on the conglomerate’s fundraising proposals even though the Indian government disclosed in Parliament in 2021 that SEBI had begun a probe to investigate some Adani Group companies over “non-compliance of rules.” It’s unclear what the scope of the SEBI investigation was and whether it has concluded.
For years, India’s beleaguered political opposition has accused regulatory authorities of corruption and raised allegations of crony capitalism, specifically pointing to Adani. But given the opposition’s lack of specific allegations made against SEBI, it seems more likely that the economy and stock market’s overseers are simply indifferent and plagued by inertia. Regardless, these accusations, and the Adani Group controversy, have not hurt Modi’s popularity, thanks in part to his administration’s tight control over the mainstream media.
Yet there may be consequences that stem from outside of India’s borders. It’s possible that global investors will become less bullish on India if they think that Indian business empires won’t be able to build necessary infrastructure or be reined in by domestic regulatory systems. Overseas partnerships and joint ventures could face headwinds as well, just as the Adani-TotalEnergies partnership has.
A fair, independent, and transparent probe into the allegations against Adani Group could ease these fears. Modi has so far ignored demands for one made by opposition political parties. But continuing to do so could very well be damaging to the long-term economic interests of India, and the world, even if it does not hurt Modi politically in the short term.

The Tata Semiconductor Plant in Dholera here comes
As the country is advancing fast into its position in the world of top source for semiconductor manufacturing, the first of its kind probably the biggest-if not-the-biggest is the Tata Semiconductor Plant in Dholera. Actually, if the Tata Group makes such an investment in semiconductor fabrication facilities within the country, then it would really break the ice of its steps in Indian electronics and technologies. Thereby, the country might be able to take another bold leap ahead towards minimization of reliance on the import of items from abroad and fostering self-sufficiency in the tech sector. It will be sited in Dholera SIR, Gujarat, that will perfectly align with the vision of the "Make in India" initiative by the Indian government poised to position the country as a key player in the semiconductor supply chain across the world.
Semiconductor Manufacturing: Need for the same
Semiconductors are in fact the "brains" of modern electronics, and therefore, it supports the backbone of several industries such as smartphones, computers, automobiles, healthcare devices, and defense systems. Of course, with technologies such as 5G, AI, and IoT developing meteorically around the globe, demand for semiconductor chips has literally been increasing meteorically. In this respect, India has remained dependent on imports to meet its domestic demand in semiconductors. Dependency, in this case, turns into a challenge to the stability of the supply chain and strategic autonomy while being an imported dependency.
The Dholera Tata Semiconductor Plant would fill the gap and create in-house semiconductor manufacturing capabilities that could reduce the dependence of India on vendors from other countries and make sustainable high-tech manufacturing viable in India.
Why Dholera?
It is called Dholera, located at Gujarat. It is developed as the best location for industry on account of strategic location, developed infrastructure, and pro-business policies. Dholera SIR is the first planned industrial smart city being India's part of the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC). This place features international standards of infrastructure, which include high-class road networks, interruption-free power supply, and state-of-the-art utilities-all necessary factors for the setup of high tech manufacturing processes, such as semiconductor fabrication.
One of the primary reasons why the available land in Dholera is so appealing to Tata's semiconductor plant is the availability of the land. Semiconductor fabs require large parcels of land for cleanrooms and production lines along with other ancillary facilities. Therefore, Dholera SIR, with large parcels of land in itself, becomes an ideal setting for such large-scale industrial operations.
It also has proximity to international transport hubs like the proposed Dholera International Airport and ports that shall ensure hassle-free and easy logistics for importing raw materials as well as exporting finished products.
Project Overview
It is expected that this huge semiconductor plant that Tata Group, one of India's largest and most respectable conglomerates, led, would bring mind-boggling investment of $300 to 1 billion. After crossing the construction phase, operation, and finally, the employment of many more people involved in the industry, thousands of jobs are supposed to be created at its conclusion.
It will produce semiconductor chips that are essential in consumer electronics, automotive, and telecommunication industries. Diversification of Tata's Portfolio Tata's entry in semiconductor manufacturing is well planned to add new dimensions to the diversified portfolio of the company as the electronic apparatus is fast gaining treads both in India and abroad.
Impact on India's Semiconductor Ecosystem
Tata's semiconductor plant in Dholera will give a fillip to the electronics manufacturing ecosystem of India. The big plus: it will develop local supply chains. Today, most semiconductors needed in India are imported. Whenever global crises erupt-like during the coronavirus pandemic-there is disruption in supply chains since imported semiconductors trickle into the country. With a semiconductor plant, it will avoid such risks and have stable inputs of chips for Indian manufacturers.
More importantly, the hub will attract supporting industries like suppliers of raw materials, manufacturers of equipment, and logistics providers. This, in turn, will subsequently escalate the industrial profile of Dholera thereby enhancing a technology cluster in the region, innovation, and attraction of startups and MNCs into the area.
Relevance to India's Strategy
Which means, in simple words again, it is a business venture and a strategic asset for India, the Tata Semiconductor Plant. The competition for semiconductor manufacturing is on a rise everywhere in the world, hence why the US, China, and South Korea have heavily invested to build up their semiconductor capabilities. Entering into such a competitive space with Tata will significantly enhance India's global standing.
This project also falls in line with the Production Linked Incentive scheme of the Indian government that aims at producing things in the country, while imports are reduced in high-tech sectors. In that way, local production of semiconductors will put much more control in the hands of India regarding its technological sovereignty in defense, telecommunications, and security in information and communication technology.
Conclusion
One of the major breakthroughs, which India can take on its journey to self-reliance in semiconductor manufacturing, is the Tata Semiconductor Plant. Strategically located, advanced and holding vast potential for economic growth, this plant is going to help transform this region into one of the major hubs of high-tech manufacturing in India. This project will, therefore, directly impact the creation of a resilient supply chain at the local level, thus helping in the general economic resilience and technological advancement of India through reduction in dependency on imported semiconductors in the country.

Set against the backdrop of China's Cultural Revolution, a secret military project sends signals into space to establish contact with aliens. An alien civilization on the brink of destruction captures the signal and plans to invade Earth. Meanwhile, on Earth, different camps start forming, planning to either welcome the superior beings and help them take over a world seen as corrupt, or to fight against the invasion. The result is a science fiction masterpiece of enormous scope and vision.
The Three-Body Problem Series The Three-Body Problem The Dark Forest Death's End
'The Three Body Problem' And the Rise of Chinese Science Fiction May 1, 2024
"Chinese science fiction has gone from a niche, underground genre to the country's hottest new export. On Saturday, at the 8th China Science Fiction Conference hosted in Beijing, an animated presenter unveiled graphs detailing the meteoric rise of the genre, claiming that China had raked in nearly $16 billion in revenue from its sci-fi industry in 2023. And in late March, an adaptation of one of China's biggest cultural exports, 'The Three Body Problem,' premiered on Netflix. The show, based on a book by Liu Cixin, follows a group of modern-day scientists battling an alien invasion, triggered by one cataclysmic decision made by an aggrieved physicist during the Cultural Revolution in China. The show garnered roughly 15.6 million views in its first week.
But the seed of this science fiction craze was first planted in 2008, with the publication of the book, which quickly became an unexpected global phenomenon. The book and its two sequels have exceeded the total sales of all literary works exported by China so far — thus piquing the interest of the Chinese government. For the midweek podcast, host Brooke Gladstone speaks with Jing Tsu, professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures & Comparative Literature at Yale, about the rise of science fiction in China as a soft power tool, the genre's complicated relationship with the Chinese government, and its evolution through the twentieth century."

Charcherry Weekly - Issue 196
Hello everyone, Mage of Light Nick Card here. I can hear the raindrops against the roof at night. Let's get to news though.
Autumnal Training Montage
Early this week, Page of Rage Jovin conducted a combat training seminar on Autumnal. Brae Emit provided the training arena and plenty of snacks. Also present at the training event was Heir of Time Rise Emit, Spirit of the Hunt Gwyn, Maid of Void Skitis, Skye M, and Rogue of Heart Charles. Reportedly, it was a nice occasion, aside from the surprise danmaku spellcard that everyone had to dodge, and the incident with the errant flying computer cable flail. It is very possible that more training sessions may be scheduled to occur again, but no concrete future dates have been given at this time.
Hold the Phone
A couple days ago, Neo Alternia Telecom officially set up all households on Neo Alternia with local phone and internet lines. There are restrictions put in place for most residents when it comes to internet access, mostly keeping it planetary local. Reportedly, it is possible to apply for a Neo Alternia Telecom number if desired. In other news, a local government building is being built in Scarab City.
A Gamer...
Very recently, a new digimon visitor to the memo appeared, by the name of Puyomon. They apparently showed up to mention the release of Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers, the sequel to Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart. Reportedly, Puyomon has been playing it on an arcade cabinet in the Game Room in the region of Immersion and Entertainment, though initially had issues regarding a possibly missing button for the controls. According to investigative reporter Prince of Time Aeons Edgeworth, The tutorial course is rather comprehensive in that game, owing its necessity to the learning curve needed to navigate racetracks effectively. Reportedly, its multiplayer method is easier to connect than most, but tests of this have only been reported slightly. In tangential news, there is also a swarm of joltik in the Game Room, which may have an unknown influence upon Puyomon.
Biodiversity Restoration
As of late, there have been successful attempts at cloning previously extinct creatures from Korous via ectobiology. A team of scientists stationed at Cradle's Rock, apparently lead by Prince of Time Travis Entropa, have been working together on this project. Mr. Entropa is reportedly the most experienced ectobiologist in the group, supposedly being the player behind the creation of the Chosen Ones once essential for STOMB's iteration of the Ultimate Riddle. It is hoped that their work together will be a major step towards bringing life back to the meteor-stricken wastelands.

Data centers, the humming brains behind this intelligence, are guzzling energy, raising concerns about sustainability. In this quest for cleaner solutions, nuclear power emerges as a potential contender, sparking debate: can it be the sustainable answer for AI data centers?
Nuclear Power: An Energy Powerhouse?
Proponents highlight nuclear's strengths:
High Energy Density: A single nuclear reactor can generate vast amounts of electricity, potentially powering large data centers with minimal land footprint.
Baseload Power: Nuclear plants operate 24/7, providing reliable and consistent power, critical for uninterrupted AI training and operation.
Carbon-Free: Unlike fossil fuels, nuclear power doesn't produce greenhouse gases, offering a potentially low-carbon solution for AI's energy needs.
But the Debate Heats Up: Weighing the Concerns
Nuclear power isn't without its drawbacks:
Safety Concerns: Accidents and radioactive waste disposal remain significant public concerns, despite advances in safety measures.
High Initial Costs: Building new nuclear plants is expensive, requiring substantial upfront investment.
Public Perception: Negative societal perceptions and regulatory hurdles can hinder adoption and project development.
Finding the Right Balance: Exploring Alternatives
The search for the ideal solution continues, with other options in the mix:
Renewables: Solar, wind, and geothermal hold promise, but their intermittent nature poses challenges for reliable power supply.
Energy Efficiency: Optimizing data center operations and hardware can significantly reduce energy consumption.
Grid Modernization: Smart grids can integrate diverse energy sources and optimize distribution, improving efficiency and reliability.
The Future of Powering AI: A Complex Equation
There's no one-size-fits-all answer. The optimal solution for powering AI data centers will likely involve a combination of approaches, considering factors like location, cost, reliability, and environmental impact.
Collaboration is Key: Shaping a Sustainable Future
The future of AI depends on finding reliable, sustainable energy solutions. We need:
Research and Development: Continued investment in renewable technologies, energy efficiency, and safe, advanced nuclear power.
Policy Solutions: Collaborative efforts from governments, industry, and researchers to develop clear regulations and incentives for sustainable energy solutions.
