I notice that in the troll ancestor-descendant pairs we see, there seem to be a set of defining characteristics which are always inherited down the direct line - blood colour, horn shape, lunar sway, aspect, and both gender presentation and presumably sex (because just look at Kankri's dialogue, Hussie did NOT intend anyone as trans at that point) always match. Those trolls had a small genetic pool, but Tavros didn't inherit Horuss' horns or Aranea's aspect, for example, the traits that define them to the audience always coincide. Now, that's obviously a narrative convention, but would it be hypothetically possible for this to actually work biologically? Perhaps each troll provides two types of gamete, the A gamete has a full half of the chromosomes, covering the biological aspects of those traits (the behavioural ones being either more nurture-affected or psychic handwavey shit), and in the slurry they pick up little bits of code from lots of other trolls' B gametes? "It's magic" always works, but I'm curious if it can be done with science too.

I don't know all that much about how gametes and genetics work, but I'd say there's definitely possibilities. There is nothing that absolutely says that a troll must have exactly 2 genetic contributors like humans do, for instance, as you have posited yourself.

The more complex the system is, however, the more possibilities of errors being introduced to the genetic code. This is not necessarily a problem. With the intense R-strategy that trolls employ, deleterious errors are constantly weeded out and helpful ones get a good chance to surface in the gene pool. From what I have seen of Trolls, I have always assumed that they have a very high mutation rate. This is supported by all the trolls we see in the comic exhibiting mutations, if one counts being fushiablood or having powers. I have not checked if the same is true for the epilogues, HS^2 or the games. If one includes them, then it may just be that SBurb players tend to have mutations.

The fact that they are players brings up another confounding issue too, as the ectobiology process means that the players do not necessarily have anything like the reproductive inheritance that a normal troll would have. So for our main trolls, it may be that they got the vast majority of their genetics directly from their ancestor/dancestor and the remainder a mix of the rest, but that for the average troll it would be different.

This does not preclude a similar result, however. Even amongst humans one can find people that appear to be dopplegangers, even despite not being related at all sometimes. One could point to sheer chance sometimes letting the buildingblocks fall into the same patterns, the blocks shuffled every generation but eventually the same set popping up in the same order. Unlikely, but when you get into larger number sets it can certainly happen on occasion, and much more likely when there is a direct line of descendance, too.

But you're probably looking for something more interesting than that.

Trolls could definitely produce two types of gametes, either at the same time or one set for kismeses and one for matespritship. One can also get different sets for "girl" trolls and "boy" trolls if one wants there to be a biological reason that the two are separate at all.

(My own HC is that to get a Troll (as opposed to a drone or a mother grub or whatever) one needs a full set of: one mother grub ovum and a gestalt mobile spermatozoa composed of 2 kismet sperm and 2 matesprit sperm, with the sperm gestalt needing to include 2 "boy" and 2 "girl" donors in any order. Usually this means that a pair of trolls will produce a bucket of gametes mostly already locked together into 1/2 of the necessary packet to deliver to the ova, which when mixed into the slurry will have a chance to encounter the other half of the equation. Since most of the gametes are already paired up the troll will usually be the product of one matesprit and one kismet pair, but sometime of the gametes enter the slurry solo so there is also a chance of a random selection of donors or one pair and two unpaired.)

One of the most important questions to get the result you want, I think, is what information each gamete carries and how that information is combined with that of additional gamete(s). (like, does one always inherit their blood from their maternal kismet ancestor, or is it a mix of all of your donors, or what?) The more shuffling and individual data blocks there are, the harder is is to get an Ancestor/Descendant pair. But if there's only a few blocks and they're inherited or passed down wholesale with little modification, then it's much easier to get a return of a nearly identical setup, especially if the children tend to mingle amongst interrelated groups like how Vriska sought out Eridan specifically because of their ancestries.

In any case, I think you need to find someone with a stronger background in the science of genetics for better information. Get some punnet squares happening.

CHALLENGE #1 → Talk about your characters (1 point)

My main characters are Emma Reed and Jasper. Some side characters on Emma’s side are her parents (Michelle and Sam Reed), Prof. Caddel, and her friends Sarah and Adrian. On Jasper's side, there is his coordinator named Opal and friend/rival Ophelia.

Emma Reed - 26, has a Master of Fine Arts degree, quiet, studious, lost in thought often. She dreams of living off her art but is currently working at a retail store after getting her degree and finding no prospects. Withdrawn and anxious have been her main states ever since. She has recently given up on trying to get into galleries and tried to use Sarah’s help to get her pieces sold online, but no one is biting or they wish to undercut her. She helps Adrian out with graphics for their game streaming and Sarah with banners and images for her site for her business which Adrian codes.

Jasper - 26, a painter of dreams for Emma and a number of other people her age. His job is to keep track of his clients ambitions and desires and use the landscape of their dreams to send messages pushing them on or steering them away from things they may not be ready for. He is addicted to his work and takes it very seriously, yet has also struggled with making progress in his own department.

Michelle Reed - 49, calm and composed, organized, and the mother of the whole block more than just Emma. She takes on a number of home projects and was the one to first introduce Emma’s friend Sarah to volunteer work in junior high. She substitutes at the local high school and juggles a number of volunteer hours herself.

Sam Reed - 53, a lawyer who is always busy and scatterbrained. He is rarely at home, which is a big reason his wife takes on so many duties elsewhere. Emma and he have a decent relationship, but not especially loving. A few too many missed birthdays and presents/dinners sent to the home have left him feeling estranged. In recent years he has tried to cut down on work and spend time at home, especially while Emma is back living there.

Prof. Caddel - 35, Emma’s favorite professor from her college days. She is cheerful and supportive but knows when to crack down to bring out the best in a person. Emma was often the target of both praise and harshness, but she never lost affection for Caddel. Caddel has been in galleries across the states and found a decent amount of success in her work. She has faith in Emma.

Sarah - A bit of a spitfire growing up, at 26 Sarah has calmed down a lot but maintained her high levels of energy. She lives in an RV and wanders around the country during the summer, while the rest of her time is split between volunteering and running her own online businesses (yes plural. She has a mobile grooming station in her RV and volunteers at many dog shelters that use her services. She also creates her own pet clothing lines that sell decently online).

Adrian - 25, Adrian went into a trade school and became an IT support specialist quickly after graduation from HS. Being a year behind their best friends left them with a lot of free time for a year, so they started streaming playing games and grew a fanbase. Adrian is also withdrawn like Emma, but more alright with sticking out in certain ways. While Emma may mold herself to fit an uncomfortable situation, Adrian had enough of that before moving to their city in freshman year. Their hair is dyed orange and they refuse to change it or reveal the natural color. Very upfront and personable if you get to know them over time.

Opal - Jasper’s boss and more than a little pretentious. She worked hard to get where she is and lets everyone know about it, while some may consider this aspirational, many might note how most of her success stories are from many years ago. Her numbers are dwindling like most, but her haughty attitude wouldn’t let you know.

Ophelia - She’s been a rival of Jasper since they first started painting dreams for toddlers. She’s focused, fast, and sometimes forgets details in the process. She cares for more people than Jasper was allotted, and likes to humblebrag at times. She’s a people person when she finishes her work and loses sleep seeing friends.

CHALLENGE #2 → Plan out the main relationship(s) in your wip (2 points)

The main relationship all centers on Emma and Jasper. The bulk of the book is about their journey back to the waking world, while the others are all side characters that have shorter roles and mainly influence Emma or Jasper in some way.

Emma is reluctant to leave the dream world and return to a life she is disappointed in, but Jasper is her guide and insistent on her need to return. The two of them encounter strange, new things as they travel, which are all run-of-the-mill to Jasper. He has started to see a very narrow worldview, and Emma in all her young ambition and new wonder waxes poetic about the world she is in.

Jasper feels a great burden on his shoulders with trying to help people live their dreams, but he also has deep guilt for nearly having given up on Emma now that he is confronted with her face to face. He starts to become amused by her antics and follows her more than leading. They both have to find a better balance in their lives. Emma and Jasper help each other see in new ways when they were both stagnating. The trials they have to overcome to figure out how to send Emma home bring them much closer when they start off annoyed at one another.

Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have already decided to close their borders to Russian tourists.

Although Finland's present visa policy is strict by general European standards, it is the most permissive of EU countries bordering Russia, but very few tourist visas are being issued to Russians.

Life without banking credentials has gradually become very, very difficult in Finland.

There are alternatives, such as an official identity card with a microchip, but they are harder to use and have not become common. Digital identification using current official ID cards requires a card reader on a computer and does not work with a smartphone.

In Finland, bank IDs have become the cornerstone of the information society. At the same time, types of mobile verification via smartphones offered by telecom operators have become more common.

Aamulehti asks if it is healthy that the "keys to the digital society" are almost entirely the responsibility of private companies.

With this in mind, the paper notes that a new digital ID card project will be considered by the parliament next week. The goal is to offer an official alternative alongside the commonly-used bank codes.

In practice, if implemented, it would be a smartphone application, allowing users to log in to the services with a few clicks.

According to Minister of Local Government Sirpa Paatero (SDP), the application should be available in September of next year.

Initially, the application would work for public services, but the government hopes that private companies will quickly adopt it. Bank IDs and mobile verification are not about to be banned, but rather will be supplemented by an official alternative.

The farmers' union paper Maaseudun Tulevaisuus (siirryt toiseen palveluun) reports that demand for firewood is currently so high that many suppliers are no longer accepting new orders.

Arto Veijonen, who runs a small firewood supply company in Jyväskylä told the paper that in recent months he has sourced more wood than ever before as demand is record-high. His busy season usually starts in early late September or early October, but this year sales began peaking at the end of August.

It is now difficult for retailers to get wood for sale without long-term relationships.

One firewood dealer told Maaseudun Tulevaisuus demand has also shot up in the capital region because many new homes have fireplaces, but few people there have access to wood of their own.

Higher electricity and district heating prices are also pushing up the price of firewood. Retailers say that rising transport costs, in particular, have increased pressure on prices.

The majority of operators in the firewood sales business are small entrepreneurs who do it to pick up extra income. For this reason, there is no official data on prices or sales volumes in the industry, according to Maaseudun Tulevaisuus.

Okok so i mentioned in the tags of this post that i have thoughts on lionel being represented by blue and carla by red in Walk/The final chapter of The Hex.

For Lionel, the video of him getting murdered is purely blue, like if you took the fuckin Twilight filter and intensified it. As well, he mentions Gamefuna in at least four of the sections in Walk (I cant remember for sure with Vicious Galaxy and the last lil bit with the trophy + reggie lore reveal), and just overall has continuous connections to the colour blue.

Carla, on the other hand, while never physically appearing, is associated with the colour red via Sado. Outside of gold earrings, Sado's only proper colour is red. Red eyes appear in most of the puzzles during Walk, which Lionel remarks is a bug that he's been dealing with since Carla made Sado. Finally, when Lionel.exe crashes in Beneath The Surface (Carla's game), the Sado faces are purely red (which, granted, it's the same way if you try to use a cheat code to kill Sado in Waste World, but still).

So we also see this blue/red colour scheme back in Pony Island, which is obviously connected to The Hex (Lou Natas/Lucifer running Gamefuna, Asmodeus appears in the Secrets of Legendaria crash, you can find Louey in Waste World, and finally Lucifer's symbols appearing on Vallamir's dark spells book. Probably more but that's all I know), and ik the connection is definitely not real at all, I like to think about colours for anything that isnt drawing (colour theory my detested)

So the only character in PI we see with a purely blue colour scheme is the Hopeless Soul, who is, for obvious reasons, the only real ally we have in PI. He's strongly against Lucifer, and aids the player in deleting PI. And while Lionel obviously isn't against Gamefuna/Lou like HS is (selling swk, working for them for cax and sol, using the gameworks engine, etc.), he's definitely been put in that victim position when it comes to Gamefuna. If he hadn't used the Gameworks engine, his characters might not have been sentient. And hey, if they were still sentient, then there would've been no irving (and no irving means no leg crushing and no leg crushing means no strangulation). As well, Lionel's reputation is definitely ruined by selling swk to Gamefuna. Overall, much like HS and all the other souls Lou had in his possession, Lionel's life gets veeeeery much so ruined just for being associated with them (not to say everything wasn't also his own fault, it very much so was, but I also cant blame him for treating game characters like shit. He didnt know they were alive until, like, a few weeks before he died. Aka during Lazarus' escape from the Gameworks building when Irving told him he's sentient, as implied in the audio I wrote down in this post).

Then we look to Carla, who's associated with the colour red (or yellow if you wanna argue that, because of the ducks, but that's not the point). In PI, the Daemons protecting the core files are all red (outside of slight glitchiness having small amounts of blue, but overall they're very red). They're working with Lou, helping to protect the very files that make up the game. With Carla, it's implied that she used satanic methods to made Sado like. That. (It's hinted at by the occult symbol on her Sado design notes in Walk, which we know is also the logo for Satantech Corp. in PI). Like the Daemons, Carla's got a reason to be against one specific person. The Daemons are against you, the player, because you're trying to delete what they're trying to protect. And, well, Carla hates Lionel for majorly screwing her over in several fucking ways. She's an ally of Lou's to some degree, and is responsible for creating the literal fucking demon spawn that fucks with you four fucking times. (Sado's battle in cax, killing Rocky in ww, her battle in vg2, and then the jumpscare and eyes in walk). Overall, she's slotted into that antagonistic role, not to mention the fact that her creation ends up killing Luke at the end of inscryption. Honestly I'm really hoping we get more Carla lore in the next dmg game, but that's besides the point.

Buuut yeah! Those are my lil thoughts on the colour connections. Again, obv im just yanking random things and running with it, but considering how little we actually do know about these two (especially carla) outside of what little we're told, I like being able to do lil analysis type things with these bitches. Zombies: Ok so i consistently thought of this through hs and college. Now it just pops into my head every so often. While I don't ever feel like I want a gun of my own it just came up at dinner last night that a friend is gonna work to get their license here and I'm thinking of tagging along cause I dont wanna be in a situation where I dont know how to use it and also suck at aiming. So practice practice.

Also as for where to hide out. I currently live in the southern appalachias and I think mountains are totes the best place to be for zombies. I've also thought rhat while most people will be headed to walmarts or lowes and places like that I'm gonna skip those as they will probs have a high infection rate in the beginning. People be hidin wounds and shit. So no thanks to epicenter places. Even these buildings in rural areas are gonna be a no for me. I do think I'd hit up any smaller medical pharmacy and such if others had already broken in to begin looting--tho with this recent year's experience the panic buying of pains meds and stuff may deplete those rather quickly, outside of the like stronger stuff in the back you'd need prescriptions for. Which would be my main objective in a looting situation! First my own depression meds and shit cause i dont want to deal with that on top of the apocalypse. And then higher dose pain meds for when I now doubt have to amputate someone's limbs who has an extremity bite. But also like common first aid stuff in bulk. Cause the goal is to hole up somewhere far away from populations.

Also there is an army surplus store around here so I'd have a friend go with me if we had early stage warnings and stock up on MREs. Dried beans, rice and other non parishables. Oh! And water pruification tablets/drops. I have a life straw but not passin that around.

as for shelter I was thinking that most public land agencies (of which I work for one and wouldnt have thought of this otherwise) but they generally have multiple maintenance yards/compounds that are generally completely fenced in with sliding gate systems that work with a code, which hopefully could be modified to be done by human effort to conserve energy resources. There are also a number of places that have solar panels on buildings here so tracking those down to being to whichever maint. yard my crew chooses. Probs would be stickin with coworkers and callin close friends to invite them here. Then it'd be a matter of building up the integrity of the fence structure, adding in barriers to keep things further from the chainlink, ala the way Negan's camp is in the walking dead?? where they even employed zombie wardens out front to cut down on humans trying to infiltrate.

There is also my thought that I may consider moving north where snowfall and ice are more prevalent. It'd be fuckin miserable to live theough the winters. But on the off chance zombies existed even though I feel like rotting corpses couldn't maintain the musculature control to remain upright for long--plus without pain sensations they're more likely to overexert their muscles and stuff which leads to tears in muscles or tendons which would lead to lower mobility I could assume. Since pain keeps us from breaking ourselves by not exerting to our fullest capabilities. Anywho, regardless of all that. Heavy snowfalls and freezing temps should render them almost inert in the harsh northern winters. Making them easier for human hunting parties up for the task, to decimate their populations around the area.

Though the thaw in summer would probs be awful with the smell, while our mighty decomposers do their job! not to mention these wonderful animals, insects included, who have larvae that thrive on eating rotting meat? those guys will be active during the warmer times and help more quickly decompose the zombies. Yay nature havin our ill-adapted/evolved humans!!

So then it's a matter of waiting out things. I may even draft up a email with my plan to be able to mass send through our agency servers so others could hopefully mimic in their areas so that we could have multiple holdouts of humans to be able to have an better mix of human genetic diversity once we wait out the zombie decomposition and need to repopulate.

Also, another thought. I'm sure many Indigenous people, especially those unfortunately forced on reservations, will be amazing strongholds. Cause when they shut their borders they SHUT their borders lol From experience with the tribe next to my park and their protocols for the early pandemic. So potentially calling in friends and contacts to set up alliances eventually.

I think that's all the main important bits. I wont drone on with plans for accepting those in need into the compound and such. Cause while i'll definitely be using my voice to speak up for that, if it works out that a bunch of coworkers from my park are within the compound with me those decisions will probably run through the incident command protocols and hierarchies already set up within the national park structure. Charlize has a strong connection with Dave and Dirk as adoptive brothers. The three of them will get together at least one evening a night just the three of them to complain about things. Sometimes you just need a cranky session with your family to get your head on straight. Often times the three will play games together and just hang out. They gifted Charlie their little circular shades as a way to claim them as their sister. They are harassed by their brothers for being the baby of the family, being born in August of 1996 conspired to the December of 1995.

Friendship wise, they have a decent foundation with most of the kids, but it is strongest with Roxy because of their shared interests in fantasy literature and costuming. The pair of them will make sure that the others are well dressed and geek out over the latest books. However, they are always willing to take John’s place in taste testing Jane’s baking. Goes to the range with Jake and Jade on a consistent basis.

Romantically, they are only involved with Sollux. The both of them had a minor rivalry that was severely unbalanced in games. He was far better but it was because of mechanic capabilities. While playfully roasting one another, they started talking nicer and nicer, and even started to seek out each other for a reprieve from other people. Didn’t realize they were dating for a solid three months before Charlie broke down and asked him to go out with them.

A psuedo alternate universe version of them (will get into it in a moment) is consistantly annoyed by Kankri in the dream bubbles and likes hanging out with Cronus because of their shared interest in music. They are “flushed" for him but unsure if he likes them back or just likes the idea of not being alone.

So, originally they were just a gaming kid who was one of the Sburb sessions in 2009. They hopped in with two of their friends, but they found that their session was not going to be complete because of a lack of a space and time player. So for a few years the three of them avoided the main questline if Sburb to figure out how to possibly merge with a timeline with the players they need.

An heir of void from a failing session with the required pieces reached out to the three of them, and using him, the space player, and the mechanical knowledge that my SI has been collecting they merged the sessions. Now with eight players total, they had the space and time players required and the other session had a hope player to counteract the rage player.

However, the session still failed as the rage mage got too far gone and killed the hope player, causing a chain reaction that left only my SI alive and stuck in a dead session that cant end.

However, in another timeline that was corrupted, Her Imerpial Condense had introduced herself to the people of Earth in the 1990s and had been working to stop Sburb from launching and undoing her empire.

In this timeline, my SiI grew up as I had, but with the added Sea Dwellers coming around to Halifax because of its status as a Port City. Because of it becoming a hot spot for the most powerful of the allies to humanity, it underwent an economic boom.

Now nearing 24 years old, they are confronted by an old friend who initially reached out to them when they were 17. He explains that those people who claimed to have had powers from an nonexistent game were telling the truth and he could prove I was one.

Meeting up with him (because hey man, he was paying for that), he uses his abilities as Heir of Void to take me to the technically now nonexistant space of the session and to meet my counterpart. As a maid of light, she was able to transfer her knowledge to me and asked for the favor of killing her. She had been alone for seven years and just wants it to end.

Doing so meant that the new version was able to gather their powers and now works with a resistance against the Condense, a group of both humans and trolls who remembered their time in Sburb/Sgrub.

The deceased version fo my SI was guided to the Dream Bubbles by the Heir of Void with a troll counter part of his’ instructions. He didn’t want her to be alone any longer, and being dead in that session just seemed like being alone for ever anyway.

As a Maid of light, they can create and distribute Knowledge, Fortune, and Light. Since that they only recently got their abilities, their non sburb body has to adapt back into the God Tier it was meant to be. However, whole they have troubles with manifesting luck and knowledge, they are quickly adapting to their skills of manifesting light, and by extension heat.
