Favorite thing is when Jeannemary is drawn short with Issac. Idk about y’all but I have been 5’9 since I was 12, most girls are done growing by 14/15. Love the implication that she’s just Short

AU where Jeanemary Chatur and Isaac Tettares survive the events of Canaan House and are taken care of by Camilla, Coronabeth, Judith, during the events of Harrow The Ninth and eventually Palamades and Pyrrha in Nona. They become friends with Nona and for once feel like older siblings to someone, and they also become friends with Hot Sauce and the gang and they help Nona walk Noodle, eventually reuniting with Gideon/Kiriona and Harrow towards the end of Nona.
Can y’all tell I feel very normal towards The Fourth House? I love them, they deserved so, so much better. Those Ghastly teens, may their souls rest peacefully in The River.

Are fears of being an "appendix" of another house founded in anything? Like... who actually is a proxy for anything else?

[ID: A reply on a post from the original poster, @/katakaluptastrophy, reading “@/sunshine-fruit-of-the-vine Ooh, your point in the tags about Corona’s comment to Judith is really interesting! Though I suppose it could also be interpreted as the Second being the ones doing the business contracts? Also please tell me more about your political headcanons…” /End ID.]
@katakaluptastrophy this is old but you absolutely do not have to ask me twice oh my god. This is where I reveal exactly how much of a history dork I am so be warned. I have also indicated Vibes in case that is helpful to anybody
So the common denominator among the Houses (as well as among societies as a whole, I spent like half a unit in my sociology class on this last year) is that there’s always a small upper class/nobility/etc and the population gets larger as you go down the ladder. That manifests in different ways within the different Houses, but it’s the same principle: The rich are few, and the poor are many.
That being said…
SECOND: The military leaders of the Nine, the Second are the ones who do the actual conquering of planets. However, Corona’s comment about how “as a Second, [Judith] should be willing to sell her birthright for economics” suggests they might not be getting their share of the profits. A huge portion of the Second lives in poverty, especially the capital city of Trentham, and pretty much the only way to escape it is to join the Cohort. The wealthy and powerful (generals, admirals and war heroes) vehemently deny there ever being a problem. For vibes, think New York City or Chicago but A Little Worse.
THIRD: The economic center of the Nine, the Third is a trade powerhouse and a hub for merchants and artisans. But they also export something a little less palatable: Propaganda for the Empire. The capital, Ida, is an enormous massive palace very similar to Versailles, where the best of the best workers (and the friends of the royal family) are privileged to live. Unlike the Second, where hard work actually can bring you up in the world, success in Ida comes out of bribes, flattery and sex. For vibes, think Paris but even less subtle, and crazy on the amethysts.
FOURTH: Supposedly a backup to the Second. In actuality, the lack of any real leadership has left the small and vulnerable population (veterans, the sick and disabled) to the mercy of the Fourth’s criminal underbelly. The capital city of Tisis is functionally a ghost town, mostly full of impotent, sheltered nobles and extensions of the mafia collecting bribes, and the other cities aren’t much better. For vibes, think Piltover (I don’t play league of legends but I LOVE Arcane), but the upper city is way more depressing and abandoned and the whole thing has kind of an ancient Roman feel as well.
FIFTH: The administration of the Nine, the Fifth works closely with the Emperor himself to keep the internal workings of His Empire running smoothly. Koniortos Court is a complex and many-armed bureaucracy, managed by its Lords or Ladies (and Seneschals, who do most of the actual diplomacy) like clockwork. It lies nestled in the capital of Rhax, where the majority of the Fifth’s population lives and works. There are frequent rebellions, but they’re snuffed out with alarming ease. For vibes, think combination of Victorian London and the city from Ulysses Dies At Dawn.
SIXTH: Less of its own independent state and more of the Emperor’s House of Wisdom, the Sixth House is the center of learning in the Nine Houses. Almost all the Houses send the best of their best to study there, so there’s a lot of people, but its native population is incredibly small- the size of a single city on the Third. Most of the Sixth is a single huge, labyrinthine library, surrounded by dormitories and a few spaceship ports for trade with the Seventh. Rank is decided not by birth, but by ability and age (in theory, anyway; in practice, they’ve strayed a bit from Cassiopeia’s vision). It’s still very communal, and everyone considers each other family on some level. For vibes, think a walled city combined with a super old university.
SEVENTH: The Seventh is responsible for most of the beautiful things made in the Empire. They export and import a lot of art, from pottery to poetry, and are considered superior craftsmen to the Third (which is why Ianthe thinks so poorly of their cloud formation poems). Outside this, they’re largely self-sufficient and very insular, doing their own farming making regular contact with only the Sixth. The lower classes are mostly farmers, while the aristocracy is just a few families, which is how Heptanary cancer happened. For vibes, think the romanticized version of the antebellum South from old books that like to gloss over the slavery thing, but a little bit sickly and weird-looking.
EIGHTH: The religious center of the Nine, the Eighth is in control of the worship of the Emperor and his Saints, as well as the Nine’s religious traditions. They’re also responsible for a chunk of Imperial propaganda- less than the Third, though, and directed less to the shepherd worlds and more within the Nine Houses. They live similarly to the Ninth House, with religious decadence, everyday asceticism and very little social mobility. The population of the Eighth House is actually very diverse, full of pilgrims from all over the Empire. For vibes, think medieval Italy but it’s all minimalist white and it ruins the whole thing.
NINTH: We know about the Ninth. We got like ten chapters about the Ninth. For vibes, think the Ninth.

Let's go Fourth House!
Tumblr media
OKAY! So, firstly, cool titles we're getting here. first off, Hope of the Emperor is sort of darkly ironic, seeing as these are the children of the houses getting sent off to the war mill. Nice hope for the future you have here, John. The Emperor's sword feels pretty apt as well. Now, Baron of Tisis and Knight of Tisis are real interesting... Baron means lord, which makes sense, and knight also makes sense in relation to Isaac being a baron here, but I will also make mention that as someone who has ALSO read Homestuck (at this point, that's essential reading for the Locked Tomb) the usage of Knight is just pinging things for me... not saying this means anything, just making my theory spider-sense tingle. "Isaac is named for Isaac, the biblical character who foreshadows the death of Jesus by bringing wood up the mountain for his own sacrifice." is straight out of the authors mouth, and it brings up some interesting parallels. I mean, foreshadowing the death of Jesus is pretty poignant. I mean Isaac dies from a ton of bone teeth spearing through him, and Gideon dies speared through the heart from a fence. They both left their (cav/necro responsively) partner distraught ... despite the fact that the clearer parallel would've been necro+necro and cav+cav, but y'know we LOVE to make stretches here o7. Tettares just means 4 Jeannemary means “God is gracious” for Jeanne plus "bitter” or “wished for child.” for Mary. Chatur, as per google. means “a person who has studied all four (chatur) Vedas and therefore is learned or smart". So, clearly a four thing, and also very depressing, seeing as "God is gracious" definitely isn't true in the context of this book, at least. Tisis is the one that stumped me, it's obviously the name of their planet but unlike Rhodes or Ida, it was a lot less google-able for me. I mean, Tisis is a place in Austria, it means Tuberculousis, it's also a moth... all of which means very little to me. But, of course, we all know my style of theorizing (throwing EVERYTHING at the wall, seeing what sticks, seeing what would be cool, and inevitably seeing everything I missed), so at the end of my rope I asked my very Greek Tia at the table who said "oh, translate that from Greek and you'll probably find something" and I was like shit... obviously the book that often uses Greek myth would be utilizing Greek words, so I immediately turned gears into THAT track - which was a good idea because wiktionary gave me ->
Tumblr media
So! Avenge, Payment, Vengeance, Penalty... all very interesting. Don't particularly stick me as Fourth, but we can cross-reference the whole thing with the book. My running theory, as depressing as it is, is just that this really sums up the narrative purpose of the Fourth. They dive into the fray to avenge the Fifth, they die in a work of vengeance from Cytherea that leaves them as collateral, they inspire Gideon to enact vengeance on Cytherea, and even FARTHER back, they're the sword to the Emperor, on his quest of VENGEANCE! God they make me so sad. .

🦋 The Fourth House 🦋
For the coming days and until the end of august, I’ll be trying to write down one astrology post per day, and what better way to start out than with houses?
The fourth house is a notorious favourite of mine, both for personal reasons (i.e it being one of my most active houses) but also for what it represents, making it the perfect starting point. I’m not one to go by the book & do things in the more conventional order, after all!
For starters, the fourth house is angular, located in the southernmost part of one’s chart. It is where planets hide & are way below the earth. It is the place that coincides with the darkest part of the night, and deals with what we usually keep under wraps. It is known as the “subterraneous place (υπογειον)” in hellenistic astrology and, in union with the Imum Coeli (IC), informs us about that space where we find comfort in our pasts.
A rather common belief among modern astrologers is that the 8th and 12th houses are “darkest” houses, but in actuality, that would be the 4th house. Though that begs the question— what is it that makes something “dark”... secrecy? eeriness? ineffability? mystery? How I see it, it is a state of being within reach, but also imperceptible and somewhat omnipresent. And that is precisely what makes the 4th house what it is. Its topics are experienced and perceived in a cyclical & unavoidable manner. It’s that core memory you cannot fully recall, but whose impact was so strong that it took on a physical form and is perceived sensorially, in a scent, or through a sound or song. It’s that sensation of déjà vu that creeps up on you occasionally. It’s generational memories, cycles, traumas. It’s an inescapable house. It’s the one house you will always return to.
Among the many things it represents, we can list family, roots, ancestry, & home. The association with home, being the place where people hide from the outside world, makes it a house of secrets. The fourth house is akin to a vault, in that sense. It is also the house of death — death in the literal sense, a topic that is still largely mysterious to the human psyche, and still somewhat considered a taboo subject, but also loss, grief, & mourning. It is also places where bodies are buried, & where remains are scattered. It's at once the roots, and one's final resting place. It’s a house that shapes and reshapes you from the cradle to the grave. It’s simultaneously where you came from & took your very first breath, and where you will be buried.

This scene was basically Magnus saying “My kids over there think you look cool but they’re too shy to say hello to you” and the teens™️ are just. Mortified
Tumblr media
Gideon was genuinely surprised to find that she was shy
I have a deep obsession with this scene, this was the moment i new i was gonna love this book. Its really the first moment of doubt? we see from this cocksure strong woman. Gideon tells herself she is confident and funny and strong in the face of the adversity in the ninth house and here is when she learns she is also... shy.
I just related to gideon in this moment so much, and i need more meta around this scene because my thoughts are mostly AHHHHH
