The Orkneys have arrived at the tourney! Time to fear for your life!

Some design notes and reference under the cut

First up, the armor: since I hate drawing plate mail I like the aesthetics of 13th-ish century armor the most, that's what I went with here.

Gawain's armor is more 14th century-adjacent, which means a nicer hauberk and scabbard for him. Being uncle's favorite has its perks! This definitely will not cause any feelings of resentment or jealousy whatsoever

Gaheris is just here to hold his brother's stuff, I seriously doubt he plans on fighting. His outfit is referenced from this 12th century English guy who was absolutely rocking it:

Also some quick Orkney design thoughts. Because my god do I have Orkney design thoughts

Agravaine: I think he's the prettiest Orkney, but most people don't notice since he isn't as eye-catching as Gawain, and it's difficult to get past his shit personality. He's also the spitting image of Morgause (I say this because it makes the Agravaine x Lamorak propaganda That Much funnier) and unconsciously grew his hair out to mimic her (their hair is black with purple undertones. btw). Tallest of the Orkneys.

Gawain: Ach, this horrible little man. I have such a clear picture of him in mind yet am never pleased with how he turns out on paper. Kind of stocky build, I think– he is strong and can move deceptively quickly. Of the brothers he probably comes the closest to being an actual redhead, though I imagine him having lots of gold and copper highlights (like the suunnnnn. Because's he the s– yeah you get it). Ice blue eyes. Perfect amount of freckles. Everyone desires him carnally, or at the very least he has good reason to think so. Shortest of the Orkneys by a LOT.

Gaheris: Well since it's Gaheris, obviously he's the most boring-looking out of all the siblings. Light orange hair and greyish-blue eyes (he tries to style it like Gawain but it just limply hangs). Suuuper scrawny and befreckled. He's smack in the middle height-wise, just like in everything else.

Gareth: Oh I am sorry to say it but he is not beating the dumb blond allegations. He looks like a ken doll gone woke and that is all. Second-tallest Orkney.

Mordred (last and least ahaha): He can actually pass for Lot's son since both Lot and Arthur have freckles and light hair, but there are some pretty clear tells. He has a Pendragon nose, classically handsome build, and more heart-shaped face. And heterochromia; one eye is blue and the other is light brown. Second-shortest Orkney.

Following on from the polls determining which fictional characters would best serve the entities, it's time to determine what books would best serve as a manifestation of a Fear's power.

Must have been published. I love fanfic a lot, but for the sake of simplicity and not getting hundreds of ABO fics for the Hunt poll, I'm going to have to veto it for this one. Fictional books are also out because a) they may already have associated magic that would give them an unfair advantage over their real-world competitors, and b) you can't actually read them.

Must be a book. I'm willing to be lenient on this front; graphic novels, magazines, short stories, pamphlets and academic journal articles are acceptable, provided they adhere to the other guidelines. Non-text-based media, such as films, music, or video games, are not.

Fiction or nonfiction are acceptable. Following on from the 'no real people' rule, I'm going to disallow biographies, autobiographies, diaries, journals, and memoirs.

Because I want to keep things fresh and avoid having the same people win every time, you may NOT submit the source material of a winning character for the Entity that they won -- e.g., Moby Dick would be an invalid Hunt submission, but would be permitted for the Vast. House of Leaves, being an overall tournament winner, is retired from all future tournaments.

FAQ

Q: "I think this book fits another entity better, can I submit it for that tournament when it comes up?"

A: If it went out in the first two rounds, it can be resubmitted. If it went out in round three, it can be resubmitted, but will likely take a penalty during consideration of the tournament's construction. Books making it to the semifinal round or beyond will not be considered in future polls.

Q: "I think this book suits this entity's aesthetics, but I'm not sure how well it aligns with their meaning/I'm having trouble expressing why I think this book deserves to be in the tournament."

A: Check the relevant Entity's wiki page here and consider drawing parallels to events or Leitners in the show itself.

Q: "Are submissions chosen based on how many times they were submitted?"

A: That's one factor. I also look at how well their description fits the actual entity and what I personally think would make for an interesting match-up.

hates  being  serious  ,  to  the  point  where  it  can  be  a  problem  .  he’s  learning  to  vocalize  his  negative  emotions  and  not  bottle  them  up  so  much  , but it's a process .

APPEARANCE

Overall: Naela stands at 5'5" (1.65 m). Like the typical Westerosi noblewoman, she has a healthy frame. However, as she gets older, the toned muscles she gains from her sword-fighting lessons become a little more evident. Visually, Naela takes after her mother, inheriting the indigo irises that she made famous in her youth, as well as her skin tone and facial features. Somehow, Naela managed to get her dark, wavy hair from her grandparents. She wears it in a braided updo for formal occasions, but she prefers to wear it free, where it rests just below her shoulders. Clothes: she wears dark shades of layered fabrics, which is the common style for women in Winterfell. Due to the weather, her people dress more for warmth and comfort than for aesthetics. When given the opportunity to travel south, she'll opt for dresses in deep purples and blues.

BACKGROUND

Naela was born in Winterfell to her parents, Eddard "Ned" Stark, and Ashara Dayne, who had met at the Tourney of Harrenhal the year before. She ended up being the first of their two children, as her sister Arya would be born five years later. She had a happy childhood. Her parents were always receptive to her excited ramblings--not to mention her discovery of her queer identity, which was usually looked down upon by those who followed the Faith of the Seven. It probably helped that her father had grown up adoring his younger sister, Lyanna (Naela's favorite of his siblings), and her mother was from Dorne, the most progressive of the Westerosi regions. Naela's cousins (Robb, Sansa, Bran, and Rickon) played with her as much as Arya did. Naela especially liked to fist-fight with the boys when her Aunt Catelyn and the septas (who disapproved of her "unladylike behavior") weren't looking. Eventually, Naela would ask her parents for a sword, which she was gifted on her fourteenth birthday. She named it Nightfall, and she secretly used it to train in the event that her uncle, Ser Arthur Dayne, chose to pass down the ancestral sword of his house, letting her become the next Sword of the Morning. The only "present" she's ever loved as much as her sword is her direwolf, which she named Moony.

(AU note) yep, I made Ashara a WOC. Call her a Salty or Sandy Dornishman. Her dad remarried after his first wife died.)

PERSONALITY

Overall: she's well known for being the figurative sun in the snowy North. Naela is a ball of energy, always loving to run around the lands of her uncle (King Rickard Stark) on the adventures she and her younger sister plan. It's rare that she's ever truly still or sad. The exceptions to this are when she's learning about tales of courtly love and/or great warriors from her parents (which keeps her still) or when she's longing for a real adventure of her own (which deeply worries her). She's a hopeless romantic at heart, partly due to the fact that her parents fell in love at first sight. This quality ties into her main weakness--her naivety. Though she is admirably loyal and true, Naela is often warned that her heart will be her undoing if someone with ill intentions tries to lead her astray.

Descendants Costume Overhall

Aka: Thee Aesthetic Ideas for the “Core Four” that would have been better than what we got

-Steampunk or Rusty Cyberpunk:

Carlos is canonly a mechanical genius, so him scavenging and helping Evie design their outfits to incorporate that wouldn’t be out of place. If anything it would be a statues symbol, technology is rare and often useless on the Isle, so Mal’s gang having someone with that skill set puts them above the rest.

-Post Apocalyptica:

The Isle is already a Dystopian Hellhole and Magical deadzone, why not have some fashion to reflect that? Even the top of the social hierarchy is leagues below the worst of Auradon.

-Fantasy/ Anachronistic Magic Medieval:

3/4 of the Core Four have magical fantasy parents, and having that aesthetic would serve them well. Magical Villains would carry more prestige, even on the Isle where no one can do magic, its still very feared. And even Carlos gives off some “Mad Scientist/Wizard/Alchemist” Vibes in some scenes. (Plus Witch!Evie who connects chemistry, cosmetics and potion making. Fae!Mal who’s outfit is literally made from scraps of her Mother’s cloak. Knight!Jay who protects the group and slides into Tourney and Auradon sports like he was born for them)

Helios was raised by human parents on the outskirts of Tantervale and like many young Marchers, had big childhood dreams of one day competing in the Grand Tourney. He and his adopted parents bred and sold the horses noblemen and common folk alike bought to compete in the racing and jousting portions so Helios grew up meeting a lot of big contenders. Of course, very few of them were willing to take on a qunari as a squire no matter how bright-eyed, friendly, and strong the kid was. Helios eventually gave up on the dream in his teen years when his magic manifested, but he still likes to talk about the Tourney and past victors with fellow proud Marchers like Varric and Blackwall. 

In Modern AU he still grew up a farm boy/horse rancher, and still liked to race horses recreationally growing up, but was more into go-kart racing and eventually race-car racing. I doubt he would have the focus and willingness to make big commitments to reach Formula 1 level, but at least eventually makes it to Formula 2. When it’s not racing season he’s on-and-off in college because he promised his folks he’d graduate but he keeps changing his major so it’s taking kind of long.

― three things that your muse likes doing in their free time:

Racing. You’ll often find him at Master Dennet’s farm racing Dennet’s daughter Seanna and a handful of Inquisition soldiers/agents who dare to challenge them. There’s not enough open room in or around Skyhold to set up any race tracks there but he’s set up a couple around the strongholds captured on other maps like Griffon Wing Keep in the Western Approach. A bit of a morale booster for the troops stationed there.

Fishing. When things get too hectic, his old man taught him to just take a step back and clear your mind with some fishing. He and Blackwall or Varric (or both) will “borrow” an Inquisition boat and find a lake or shore somewhere to just chill and share a few drinks while fishing all day. They even take Cole a couple times to teach him, though he didn’t really see the point of it. When they get back, Helios and Blackwall always fry up whatever they’ve caught and share it with visitors to Skyhold, women and children first. 

Working Out. He’s no warrior himself but he’ll do physical training with the Inquisition soldiers. Running laps, pushups, a little sparring, anything that gets his heart beating fast and muscles straining. It’s cathartic, helps focus his extra energy, and relaxes him so he can sleep well at night. The toned muscles are an aesthetic side benefit that he won't pretend he doesn’t enjoy. Plus, like Bull mentioned to him, it helps soldiers when they know who they’re fighting for and Helios definitely jokes around with them and will share a drink after training.

I haven’t finished his game yet, so his top 7 may change, but so far it’s looking like that’s his list. His parents are so, so important to him. I also headcanon he and his world state’s Akono Hawke become good bros over time. He’s also good friends with a couple of his exes, one in Antiva and one in Starkhaven, and they write often but they don’t make the Top 7.

No phobias, he’s a pretty brave dude. Not a lot scares him, though some of it probably should. Spirits and demons are cool to him, either something to appreciate from a distance or something to fight. Heights and storms and large beasts are exciting, he’s great at public speaking and loves a crowd, and he’s a necromancer so death is a friend of his. If he absolutely had to choose something, he might say he doesn’t care much for snakes, but it’s more of a dislike than a fear and not strong enough to be a phobia.

Oh, I am so rooting for them!  I am always happy to talk a Mya/Lothor thing.  There’s definitely potential there for something to happen between them and Sansa is positioned to be the catalyst.  She totally ships it because reasons.      

The connection between Sansa and Mya was set up way back in AGOT when we met the latter through Catelyn’s POV.  Mya tells her about her love Mychel Redfort and that he’s promised they will marry after he is knighted.  Right away, Catelyn relates her to Sansa in personality but sees how this dream will be inevitably crushed by reality:

“Mychel’s my love,” Mya explained. “Mychel Redfort. He’s squire to Ser Lyn Corbray. We’re to wed as soon as he becomes a knight, next year or the year after.”

She sounded so like Sansa, so happy and innocent with her dreams. Catelyn smiled, but the smile was tinged with sadness. The Redforts were an old name in the Vale, she knew, with the blood of the First Men in their veins. His love she might be, but no Redfort would ever wed a bastard. His family would arrange a more suitable match for him, to a Corbray or a Waynwood or a Royce, or perhaps a daughter of some greater house outside the Vale. If Mychel Redfort laid with this girl at all, it would be on the wrong side of the sheet.

And we know he did.  What’s interesting is that Mya is near 20 years old, but her innocence and optimism is exactly like that of Sansa’s at 11.  Coupled with her age, it’s not hard to guess that she’s probably not a virgin.  It’s because Mya is so in love and implicitly trusting that Mychel would never abandon her that she consented to a sexual relationship with him.  Mychel really had no right to make such a promise being raised with the knowledge that his father would make that decision for him.  Mya is the one who assumes all the social risks and has the most to lose.  Myranda points out this was a cruel thing for Mychel to do and I agree.  When we see her again in Alayne II, she’s become closed off and bitter in her heartbreak after learning Mychel was wed to Ysilla Royce.  The fact that she’s had pre-marital sex is a source of salacious gossip.  This was a girl who had sex with one partner who she thought she was going to spend the rest of her life with.  Now she’s slut-shamed with the bastard stereotype of being morally loose.  It’s so unfair.   

This is the second time in her life Mya has been profoundly affected by an irresponsible, careless man.  Sansa and Mya are connected in a generational way to their fathers that cemented their friendship when they were fostered by Jon Arryn.  Mya remembers being loved briefly by her father before he abruptly exited her life, not even bothering to give her the advantages of official acknowledgment.  Again, she loved him, trusted he would be there and he left.  So it’s no wonder why Mya has enormous trust issues now regarding relationships with men.

“Men come and go. They lie, or die, or leave you. A mountain is not a man, though, and a stone is a mountain’s daughter. I trust my father, and I trust my mules. I won’t fall.“ She put her hand on a jagged spur of rock, and got to her feet. “Best finish. We have a long way yet to go, and I can smell a storm." 

Myranda says her father tried to make another match for Mya, but she refused to hear of it.  She’s now leaning toward cynicism and becoming hard as a stone to protect herself from being hurt again.  This passage is very much like Sandor placing his trust in his sword and posturing about never having to fear any man.  There are also parallels to another passage, and they have some other significant character traits in common, but that’s a bit beyond the scope of the question.  ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) The point is Sansa has direct experience dealing with the essence of Mya’s hurts, both in her own shattered innocence and dreams as well as Sandor’s.  And she was able to put dents in his cynicism.  I don’t see why she couldn’t do the same with Mya.

As of TWOW, we can see that the old wound has reopened with the return of Mychel Redfort at the tourney:

“She was reading her little lord a tale of the Winged Knight when Mya Stone came knocking on the door of his bedchamber, clad in boots and riding leathers and smelling strongly of the stable. Mya had straw in her hair and a scowl on her face. That scowl comes of having Mychel Redfort near, Alayne knew.”

Here’s my interpretation of the details given.  Unless Mya jumped into a pile of hay right before entering the room for some reason, the straw in the hair and stable smell is probably referencing the old cliche of “rolling in the hay.”  Stables are often used as a choice place for a tryst.  I get why Mya is scowling from personal experience.  Sometimes in heartbreak, we become emotionally compromised and against our better judgment reconnect intimately with people that hurt us.  We just want so badly to feel close to that person again that sometimes selfish assholes seeking an easy lay will take advantage of that.  Mychel was obviously Mya’s first in many ways, and she was left reeling.  In the end, she feels worse for being with him (hence the scowl) because it doesn’t change the fact that he’s married to Ysilla, she’s now relegated to a tawdry cliche and reminded again that a bastard girl shouldn’t have expected more.  This looks bad for Mya being open to another relationship possibility, but it might just be the reason she finally closes the door on Mychel.  At least we know, Mya actually isn’t as hard as stone as she claimed before.  She still has a soft, vulnerable heart underneath.  

I don’t know if GRRM will go this route, but where there is sex, there is a possibility of a pregnancy subplot.  I would imagine that Mya does have access to moon tea through Myranda, but there’s no telling if she uses it or not.  Just a thought...   

As for Lothor, Sansa senses that he is quite fond of Mya.  Not that he ever said so directly, but:

“She’s half mule herself, that one. I think she’d leave us all to starve before she’d put those animals at risk.” He smiled when he said it. He always smiles when he speaks of Mya Stone.”  

^^^ I love that.  Alayne II is such a pivotal chapter for Sansa developing a more mature understanding of love and relationships.  She’s still somewhat caught up in her old way of thinking.  At first, Sansa does the social class arithmetic to see if they would pair well on that level, but she also wonders how Mya would feel personally about Lothor.  What would she think about his plain looks and him being a bit older?  And what is it about her that attracts him most?  She’s shipping it, but she’s still focused on the superficial.

"Do you think Ser Lothor likes her as she is, in mail and leather?” she asked the older girl, who seemed so worldly-wise. “Or does he dream of her draped in silks and velvets?”

“He’s a man. He dreams of her naked.”  

Sansa is thinking about this the wrong way.  It’s not Mya’s aesthetic that attracts Lothor.  He’s into her as a person and that makes him desire her.  Is that not Sansa’s expressed wish, to be loved for herself?  This is true about most relationships in ASOIAF.  People just want who they want.  It’s irrelevant if they are conventionally attractive or unattractive, or if they defy or typify gender roles.  That insight is another reason for Sansa to take action because it’s meaningful to her and helps her to understand her own desires.  Lothor likes Mya’s stubborn feistiness.  He likes that she loves her animals more than most people.  I’m sure he’s heard the gossip too, but it doesn’t seem like her not being a virgin bothers him one bit.  She’s got grit and courage similar to his own.  The reason he probably hasn’t made a move is that she’s been giving off a strong vibe of not wanting any suitors and he may believe she wouldn’t want him.  He’s older and not the gallant pretty boy that Mychel is.  But tourneys are bristling with that romantic and sexual energy.  If Sansa is going to play matchmaker, the timing is perfect.   

Sansa’s experience with Lothor is that he’s a quiet, reserved man.  But he’s strong, honest, steadfast, and loyal.   He has no apparent vices or skeletons in the closet.  How could you not love him for seeing Harry’s rudeness and dubbing him “Harry the Arse?”  He and Sansa have developed a warm, affectionate friendship that I think speaks well of his character.  He confided in her once that he sought out his knightly kin in Brownhollow, but was rejected by them.  He seems to be a man adrift, without home or family.  Everything he has, he’s earned himself the hard way.  His knighthood came from acts of valor during the BotBW, not from tourney performance.  That seems to be an important distinction GRRM is making between true knights and “knights of summer.”  Lothor’s service to Littlefinger is more a matter of trying to earn a living and lack of better opportunities.  There’s no sense that Lothor is any more loyal to LF than what’s expected of an employee to their employer.  There’s some reason to be concerned as Lothor does know some of LF’s treasonous crimes and secrets.  There’s probably going to be risk and danger in Lothor switching sides; however, Sansa has a sense that what Lothor really wants is a home and family.  He’s mature and wanting to settle down.  He’s not an irresponsible boy playing at manhood.  I don’t know how much better he could be set up to be the balm for Mya’s broken heart and trust issues.  The author is shipping this so hard!

So how could Sansa influence Mya to consider Lothor and in the process win his loyalty?  Well, it is a tourney, and I would expect he will be competing in the joust.  I’m 99% sure that LF has fixed the lists to ensure Harry is among the winners and Lothor is probably part of ensuring that happens.  One possibility I thought of is if Sansa has a heart to heart with Mya about there still being good and loyal men in the world.  There’s one that is standing on the sidelines and worthy of giving a chance.  As much as it’s tempting to be cynical about love and relationships considering her own situation with Harry, at her core, I think Sansa is still that romantic and optimistic.  I don’t see why she wouldn’t seize on this opportunity to see it happen when the reasons are so personally meaningful to her.  Perhaps she could persuade Mya to give him her favor, and that could result in upsetting some of the expected outcomes.  As Jorah told Dany, sometimes a lady’s favor drives a man to want to best all the competition.  It changes the way he feels about himself and he wants to win for her.  I, and I think Mya too, would be very satisfied to see Mychel Redfort unhorsed by him.  Please, George, make it happen!

Ruby’s typically a fan of horror stuff, she teases Turq a lot when they have sleepovers and he’s scared of some of the horror movies she plays.As for legit fears, I like to imagine she’s scared of abandonment and not fufilling anything in life.Her friends all have lives, Turq has a legit girlfriend for pete’s sake, so she’s most likely scared that they’ll see her as not doing anything in life and eventually abandon her.

14.) EyesFor some reason I like to imagine since she’s usually happy-go-lucky, her eyes barely glow from happiness. However when her eyes do an emotional glow, it’s most likely from anger. Which honestly sounds fitting, considering they’d glow a sorta dark reddish. I do imagine that her red eyes coupled with her anger (which… isn’t as scary as Cobalt but scarier than Tig) do make her pretty intimidating. 

25.) Religion

In all honesty I imagine Ruby is apart of this sort of religious “group” on Juno where she does acknowledge the power and abilities of the gods, but does not specifically worship any of em. She knows they exist and are the strongest beings on Juno, but doesn’t specifically worship a specific one.After becoming a paladin, I think she sorta semi “switches” to the religion I dubbed “Iridescence 2″, where the Paladins are the true heroes and protectors of Juno that truly deserve worship (Iridescence 1 is saying Iris is the ultimate one), though like always she isn’t gonna go outta her way to uh… “worship” herself. I have had thoughts of arrogance being a weak point for her so that’s semi-related to the last sentence.33.) Safein all honesty i have no idea what to do with this so i’m gonna talk about her fight gearRuby’s fight gear is lowkey more on the aesthetic side than the practical side, but her style does have some quirks.She typically has a soft n comfy casual shirt and leggings/yoga pants under her jackets and of course boots are popular on Juno. Her specific boots are more of an aesthetic style than a typical “commoner’s boots” (Amethyst Chap4 boots) or “seasoned fighter boots” (Cobalt boots). Her jackets don’t serve too much of a purpose in protection or comfort, but it’s a good distraction from the fact that under it is typically casual non-fighting clothes. Her belt is most likely an aesthetic choice though, I have thought up her pants to be yoga pants or leggings so a belt wouldn’t really be needed, and instead of taking it off I’d say she just uses it for an aesthetic. Kinda like the idea I had in mind of Neocity “hierarchies”, Ruby’s in between the “renegade” people who just go to Neocity for entertainment or fashion and the actual common fighters who aren’t consistent tourney participants but are still licsensed as fighters (yay i can’t spell liscence)Thanks for sending one man :>
