The most surprising thing about the comics is that Ozai didn't just kill Ursa after Azulon died. Seriously they don't like each other and it surprises Ozai didn't just toss Ursa under the bus to try and make his accession look legit and framing her as the sole culprit to kill two birds with one stone. He already has heirs, Ursa is legit useless to him at this point.

It makes me feel they had no idea what to do with her character so they made up a new backstory. It surprises they didn't go the easy route of Ozai simply killing her after Azulon died to try and cover himself.

Obviously, the comic writers Yang and Co didn’t want Ursa to be killed because they wanted her to have her “happy ending”with their OC character called Ikea excuse me Ikem. Despite having to abandon her children and lose her original face and memories. It would had been better if Ursa hid at Ba Sing Se or Yu Dao a Fire Nation Colony instead of Hira’a her home village that Ozai would be able to assassinate her easily from.

Ursa should have been hunted by Yuyan Archer or Combustion Man due to her being an assassin and knowing the true nature of Fire Lord Azulon’s death of a rather successful assassination by posion. Which was also stupid writing wise given Firebenders strong resistance to posion even in old age as shown by Iroh and the White Jade Tea.

However, Azulon’s death was much more believable due to his immensely old age whereas Ursa being a woman in the prime years of her life would not be. Many of the daimyo lords of the prefectures of the Fire Nation would be EXTREMELY skeptical of Ursa’s death given that she is not a warrior.

Honestly, the biggest and stupidest mistake on the writers part was Ikem surviving after confronting Fire Lord Azulon’s carriage to take Ursa back. Azulon or Ozai’s soliders should had executed this peasant commoner for daring to threaten the Fire Nation Royal Family at all. What gall and arrogance! Nor should Ozai given into Ursa desire to spare his life. Ozai doesn’t know or care about Ursa at all! She is just a eugenics experiment for the Fire Sage and his father the Fire Lord. In fact Ozai should have burned Ikem to ashes for daring to point his wooden sword at his father and Fire Lord.

Obviously, the comic writers took the stereotypical route of making Ursa a victim of a forced arranged marriage where Ursa is kept from her true love by an evil domineering abusive man. 🙄😒 Despite, the ATLA creators stating that Ozai and Ursa had a good relationship earlier during their marriage.

Katara ain't even the last southern waterbender. The post-ATLA material shows that there were other waterbenders in the SWT all along but they were in hiding or couldn't be contacted because the South Pole is too big and communications broke down during the war.

It would be more revolutionary for Katara to end up with a SWT boy so they could rebuild their tribe together and help pass down customs, but Katara doesn't know ANY southern water tribe boys her age except for her brother. Bryke literally couldn't be bothered making any other SWT boys Katara's age, so she has no viable romantic options left apart from Aang. Katara herself was even SUPPORTIVE of settler colonialism if it meant the outcomes could benefit the future mixed kids she would have with Aang. Kataang being "revolutionary", my ass. 😭

I also think it's kindaaaa ironic that someone going on about how "revolutionary" a particular romance is supports Maiko and literally has the url of "Fire Lady Mai" when the Fire Nation monarchy should have been abolished because they gained their power through eugenics over the centuries by breeding the royal family with noble lineages to produce the world's strongest firebenders, and Mai was literally a colonizer who never learned that colonization was bad and becomes the queen of the nation she colonized in the name of. Lol um, okay.

I agree, if we’re taking the “Katara has a duty to marry a specific kind of man to fulfill a duty to her people” angle, then yes, someone from the Southern Water Tribe would best fulfill that.

But what I have an issue with is the whole idea that who she marries should be dictated by a sense of duty. Or politicized in general. That’s just a classic misogynistic narrative (so unsurprising to hear from a kataang fan) that a woman’s relationships is not about what she wants, but rather, what would be for the greater good. That is not a healthy basis for a relationship. A relationship shouldn’t be political; it should be about you as a person and who you love. And ultimately I think that’s why Zutara is so hated, because ultimately it does represent placing love above the greater good. Some people view this as traitorous and selfish for a woman to do, but couldn’t be me. Katara, and all women, are not wrong for choosing love. We don’t live very long and love is one of the most beautiful things to experience. We have a right to experience it.

However, I disagree that Katara supported settler colonialism, assuming we’re talking about The Promise here. What she believed was that families shouldn’t be separated and lovers shouldn’t be kept from one another just because their ethnicities are different. She brought up the children to convince Aang to reconsider his stance on enforcing racial segregation (too bad certain fans didn’t get the memo). Also, Zuko wasn’t even trying to recolonize that province; he and Katara only supported their right to self-determination. That’s the opposite of colonialism.

A further expansion on subverting the intention of the eugenics program as applied to both Zuko *and* Azula:

Is the simplest and yet in some ways, in my admittedly rather biased opinion, most profound way of all to do it. Azulon set out to indoctrinate two kids away from being human and to being talking weapons that killed until he told them to stop. Zuko developed his (selective) empathy over time and ultimately set out to right wrongs and topple an unworthy monarch from his throne in most of my AUs, as his arc invariably leads into political waters and into stirring those waters.

Azula, by contrast, was considered the success and attempted to be molded into an Angron-style KILL ALL BURN ALL LOOT ALL attack dog. She deliberately refuses this as she did in canon, and where in canon she's the blend of 'makes you want to root for the villains' turns into 'do not do this cool thing and there are no good imperialists', in the heroic AU the same traits that made her an effective villain also make her an equally effective hero. She is taught to wield terror and to enjoy sadism, she deliberately refuses both. She makes a point to respect non-Benders and other traditions of Bending in a manner that she again was not taught, as its own, more subtle, rebellion than Zuko's but one more to the very heart of everything around her.

Heroic Azula takes all the positive traits of the canon version and magnifies them, while the negative traits lurk like a serpent beneath overripe fruit, but instead of ultimately overwhelming her, they are manageable and her problems are manageable with an actual support network that helps.

And were the premise of the eugenics program true neither of the two Fire Siblings should be able to do what they do under Azulon's ideal vision.

For I headcanon that after getting threatened by Kyoshi in Shadow of Kyoshi, Fire Lord Zoryu vowed to make sure that his descendants would never have to bow before the Avatar ever again, in addition to his plan to centralize power in the Fire Lord so he and his descendants would never face a coup attempt again. So he started the tradition for marrying for (literal) power, making sure heirs either married the most powerful firebenders benders available, or recent blood descendants of recent Fire Nation Avatars.

And I think my headcanon explains why Fire Lord Sozin thought he could win in a fight against fully realized Roku; why the Royal Family only seems to produce elite/prodigy benders; why Ozai is considered so strong that only the Avatar could defeat him, when other elite benders of the other elements could easily be taken out by a small group of elite fighters; the whole eugenics experiment/prophecy underlying the Ozai-Ursa marriage; why Zuko can bend rainbow fire in addition to the implication that he surpassed his father while only being a young adult; and why "sane" Azula is essentially already the GOAT firebender as a teenager.

And why in all honesty I think Azula by her next comic appearance is going to at least be able to make her quick charge, and maybe even instant, lightning lethal, since that is how she is going to still remain a threat in my opinion. For even with all the raw power at Aang’s command, he still has a frail human body.

Hell, considering that the Kyoshi novels implied that smokebending is a subset of firebending, and that the Fire Warriors seemed to be psychically bending smoke, Azula could learn to bend fire or lightning psychically, which in that case I think she could even take on Amon, Yakone, and Tarrlok all at once and stomp them.

I think you’re correct. It makes perfect sense that royalty that obsessed with power and dominating the world would choose to only marry equally/more powerful benders, not only to make sure that they’d have strong heirs, but also to make sure that the powerful benders that were not royalty were still weaker than the actual royal family, which would lower their chances of winning if they were to ever try to dethrone them. 

(It could also lead to some incestuous marriages, but we all know the real reason I want that to be Fire Nation thing XD )

Hi, so I know it's super random, but is a firelord allowed to marry a non-fire bender? Imagine the child inheriting their mother's (or father's if the firelord is a woman) bending abilities... Like a waterbending firelord? Or earthbending? Or airbending? How are they going to be a FIRElord if they bend another element? This can't have been allowed idk XD

Yes, considering that the position grew out of a theocratic leadership by the first Fire Lord (at least according to the comics), who was the leader of the Fire Sages, it seems to me that originally the position was deeply linked with being a strong firebender. 

I don’t know if there would be a written rule, but because of the expectation of the Fire Lord being a powerful, if not the most powerful firebender of the land, I’m sure that the royal family would arrange marriages trying to secure the best possible chances of this happening (hence the eugenics experiment of marrying Ozai and Ursa). This would also be an explanation why it is such a big deal that Azula outshines Zuko in bending. 

Having said that, governments and societies change, and things that were once unimaginable become a possibility. Like in many countries for a long time it was unimaginable (whether legally forbidden or not) to have a political leader who is a woman, or POC, or [insert religion], or gay, etc. until society was ready for the change and could have such a leader. 

I think that the end of the war would mark huge societal changes in the Fire Nation, as well as changes in perception. Mixed families would become common-place, and there would be Fire Nation citizens who were earth-benders from the colonies, for example. As these benders of other elements start to become common-place in schools, the army and other work-places, the Fire Nation identity would change with it - and it would be less linked to the element itself. Maybe the position of Fire Lord would become progressively more about good governance and who is the right person for the job, rather than who is the strongest bender in the land. 

So in such a shifting society, I could imagine that a marriage with a different bender would be seen less as a genetic risk for the bloodline and more as a diplomatic asset. Whether a child who bends other element than fire (especially in case there are eligible firebenders in the royal family) could become Fire Lord is another issue - and would certainly make an interesting story to explore.

His skills in Firebending are pathetic compared to his sister's and his morality from his mother and later uncle is out of line with Ozai and mainstream Fire Nation Elite Imperialists. If Zuko was a ruthless and cold-blooded killer like Azula and was at least just as good as his YOUNGER sister, then Ozai would NOT HAVE ANY PROBLEM with Zuko as his son and heir! Zuko represents everything that Ozai was raised to hate and resent; compassion, morality, mercy, weakness, etc. Ozai hates his son for incompetence as a firebending warrior which is antithetical to Ozai as the strongest firebender in the series along with him being an Agni Kai champion along with the morality and softness that Ursa and later Iroh fostered in Zuko. The fact that Zuko doesn't conform to their society's warrior culture and morality bothers his father since Ozai was likely forced to conform since his own childhood under his father Azulon’s reign. Ozai probably resents that Zuko has his mother and uncle's affection whereas Ozai as a child probably didn't have his mother, Ilah's love to protect and care for him from Azulon's wrath due to her death in childbirth. Iroh got to experience his mother's love and presence along with his father's respect during his childhood, something that Ozai never had. Ozai resents his first-born Zuko and relates far more with his second-born daughter Azula who is neglected like him.

The signers of the Declaration of Independence were highly imperfect men. Thomas Jefferson and his fellow Southerners were rank hypocrites for declaring “all men are created equal” while owning men, women and children as their slaves. John Adams was sour and disputatious, and later as president would sign the Sedition Act cracking down on criticism of the government. John Hancock was accused of amassing his fortune through smuggling. Benjamin Franklin could have been described as kind of a dirty old man.

Yet they laid out a set of principles, later codified in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, that transcended their flaws. At this bizarre moment in our history, it is useful to remember that the ideas and institutions of the American experiment are much more powerful and enduring than the idiosyncrasies of our leaders.

We have a president who neither understands nor respects the basic norms of American democracy. Make no mistake: Donald Trump is a true aberration. There is no figure like him in U.S. history, for which we should be thankful.Trump’s inexperience is unique; he is the only president never to have served in government or the military. This weakness is exponentially compounded by his ignorance of both policy and process, his lack of curiosity, his inability to focus and his tremendous insecurity. He refuses to acknowledge his shortcomings, let alone come to terms with them; and he desperately craves the kind of sycophantic adulation that George Washington, a genuine hero, pointedly rejected.Trump is a #FakeHero. He strings along his supporters with promises he has no idea how to keep. Like many a would-be strongman before him, he defines himself politically by the fights he picks; he erects straw men — faceless “elites,” cable television hosts, Muslims, Mexicans, nonexistent individuals or groups waging an imaginary “war on Christmas” — because authoritarians always need enemies. Yet his ego is a delicate hothouse flower, threatened by the slightest puff of criticism.

The Founders, mindful of their own faults, ultimately designed a system to contain a rogue president. They limited his elective term to four years, gave checking and balancing powers to the legislative and judicial branches, and designed impeachment as a last-ditch remedy. The Trump presidency compels all of us to be mindful of our constitutional duties.The role of the citizenry — to express approval or disapproval at the ballot box — includes making sure that suffrage is not selectively and unfairly denied by restrictive voter-ID laws or partisan purges of the voter rolls. It is heartening that red states have joined blue in resisting the attempt by Trump’s trumped-up “voter fraud” commission to assemble a national list of voters. Perhaps some future administration could be trusted to make sense of our confusing patchwork of voting systems. This one can’t.

Congress must assert its powers of oversight. One reason the signers of the Declaration gathered in Philadelphia to pledge “our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor” to the cause of independence was that they saw the mingling of royal power and British commercial interests as corrupt. We now have a president whose far-flung business empire — which he has refused to divest, and which his family still operates — presents myriad potential conflicts of interest. Trump has deepened the swamp, not drained it; and Congress has a duty to sort through the muck.Congress must also let Trump know, in no uncertain terms, that any attempt to impede or disrupt special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation into Russian election meddling will have the gravest consequences. Trump should be told that firing Mueller would automatically be considered grounds for impeachment.The justices of the Supreme Court, meanwhile, should study the court’s decisions in United States v. Nixon, which forced Richard Nixon to turn over his White House tapes; and Bush v. Gore, which halted the 2000 vote recount in Florida. Both were instances wherein the court, which rightly shies away from decisions that determine who occupies the presidency, felt it had no choice but to act. It is no stretch to imagine that Trump’s contempt for the Constitution will once again force the court’s hand.

The Fourth of July is no day for despair. It’s a day to remember that our system, though vulnerable to a charlatan such as Trump, is robust and resilient. Eventually he will be tossed or voted out. And the star-spangled banner yet will wave.

That same deconstruction of the super-soldier idea underpins my Avatar stories

One of the key elements, though not explicitly noted as such is that Zuko is not 1:1 as powerful in Firebending as Azula is, but they are both products of that experiment. Zuko, as a Firebender, has his main advantage as a super-soldier in that he learns the basic of a technique more swiftly than Azula does....but because he doesn't put in nearly the work that she does into it his Firebending lags at multiple levels.

Azula is far more powerful than Zuko in raw terms and puts in all the work to get there.

At the same token there are people who are not products of the experiment at all who match the most powerful Firebender of her generation 1:1 in raw power terms. Toph and Katara, and ultimately Tenzin when the Airbenders have a non-Avatar example. Toph and Katara within the spheres of Earthbending and Waterbending are unstoppable forces, and when the three face off against each other they tend to stalemate because it's a case of an unstoppable force versus an immovable object.

*Zuko* needs surprise and luck to beat Azula in sparring, let alone real combat. Katara or Toph, OTOH, have a 50:50 chance to do so by brute force and equally so by smarts/sneakiness. The very reality that people who have no equivalent program whatsoever, and in the case of Toph Beifong the first Earthbender in a family in some 350 years, a complete absence of (known) Avatar-ancestry, and in the case of Katara having the improbable combination of 'sole surviving (known) example of a category *also* being the most powerful exemplar of that type of Bending is its own deconstruction of the idea.

Azula never registers Zuko as an equal as a Bender because he isn't one, Katara and Toph, OTOH, absolutely do get this and more to the point, even absent the mental breakdown, at least as I write the scenario Katara would have beaten Azula in a 1:1 match given she very nearly did so under Ba Sing Se in the prior season. Katara is Azula's equal in skill and raw power.

In various AUs the two (and ultimately the three when Toph shows up full-time) become a combination that brings the war to a very rapid finishing point as having the Avatar, who masters all four elements, and the three most powerful of the next generation in three elements on the same side makes Team Avatar the equivalent of a very big army and something where only fools rush in where angels fear to tread to face.

What is your favorite fire nation royal ships

My favorite Azula ship would be Azulaang or Tyzula followed by Sokkla. The contrast between Aang and Ty Lee’s personality with Azula’s own personality make their interactions in fanfics and canon very interesting and carry a certain charm to them. Aang would make a great therapist and healer for Azula. Along with Ty Lee being her closest female friend outside of Mai. Sokka and Azula also share genius-level intelligence and cunning. As well as make an excellence comedic duo! My favorite relationship outside of shipping for Azula is most definitely between Ozai, Ursa and Zuko. The parent & daughter and brother & sister relationship reigns supreme over all others. Maiko and Zutara personally is tied for me in regards to Zuko's ships!

Personally, I like Tyzula, Maiko, Azulaang, Zutara, and Sokka for the main children characters of the ATLA series and Irohsami for TLOK series. However, my FAVORITE ship in ALL of the Avatar: TLA series is Urzai obviously! PERIOD!

I believe that Ozai, Ursa, Zuko, and Azula including the entire Fire Nation Royal Family have very complex relationship dynanamics with each other. I believe that over time Ozai began to develop feelings of affection, care, even geniune love for his family. However, since Ozai has been raised to be a ruthless, cunning, manipulative vicious warriors since his childhood. Ozai and Ursa maybe be Fire Nation Royal and Noble by blood. However their personalities and background environment extremely differ. Which is why Ozai is so much colder, cruel, and brutally ruthless compared to his wife Ursa and even brother Iroh. Ozai has been personally brainwashed and socially conditioned since childhood by the Fire Nation Elite and Fire Lord Azulon to become the man that he is today. Compassion, Morality, Peace, Pacifism and Mercy are signs of Weakness and MUST be eradicated and eviscerated. However, during Zuko and Azula's early childhood Ozai was more gentle and fatherly towards his children and husbandly towards his wife. Ozai was never some sadistic wife and child beater that the ATLA fandumb tries to horribly make him out to seem like! It just their Abuse Porn Headcanon Fanficition Obession!

Zuko mentions that Ozai and Ursa along with their family used to be happy, and we saw that in Zuko's flashbacks. Yang, just decided to make Ursa a victim because in his mind: URSA IS A GOOD WOMAN! OZAI IS A BAD MAN! SHE MUST BE HELD HOSTAGE BY THE EVIL ABUSIVE MONSTER!!! While Ozai and Ursa arrange marriage does make sense and was confirmed by the creators. It doesn't mean that Ozai and Ursa's relationship was ALWAYS BAD, or SHE WAS KIDNAPPED! Plus, the Urzai relationship is quite normal in the antiquity of Asian societies that the Fire Nation is based on aka Shogunates of Japan and Imperial Chinese Dynasties!!!

Ozai HIMSELF stated in the comics that he tried to be a good father to Zuko and Azula during their young childhood which is canon to flashbacks that Zuko has in the show. Zuko HIMSELF also stated that Ozai tried to be a good father to him and Azula. WHICH ALSO EXPLAINED WHY ZUKO TRIED SO DESPERATELY TO GET BACK IN HIS FATHER'S GOOD GRACE AGAIN AND REGAIN HIS FATHER'S LOVE! So, in conclusion, Ozai did love and care for Ursa, Zuko, and Azula. Despite, according to the comics he was ALSO FORCED into an eugenics experiment with the granddaughter of his grandfather's old rival and friend. On the orders of his father Fire Lord Azulon and the wishes of the Fire Sages. I believe that Ursa did alot of the child rearing when Zuko and Azula were toddler with Fire Nation Royal Servants helping her as well. However, Ozai was a active and positive influence as a father for his children in their early youth. Why would Zuko desperately want to return to the Fire Nation and his father if Ozai was just a cruel, harshless, bastard to him? Ozai, Ursa and the children used to enjoy the time at Ember Island with theater plays and playing on the beach at their family's summer house.

The Eugenics experiment was an unnecessarily 40K-ish retcon as far as the comics go but it does make a useful background for AUs:

It basically turns Azula and Zuko on paper into more or less copies of the Primarch concept, warriors literally engineered to be not merely fighters but generals from the cradle....and then like the 40K Primarchs this concept goes horribly right. In two different directions. Personally I find the concept as implemented in the comics done with far too 20th Century Western a lens for a world that would perhaps have variants of the concept, but not exactly that precise form of it.

The experiment forms a good part of the elements of 'Ursa is not defined by her relationship with her children even if people say she is' and this is the main reason for including the Ikem relationship in some form in every single AU. It gives her a life that she intended to live, sets up a contrast between mentally ill APD-suffering Ozai who in all AUs but one gets the worst kind of reinforcement and reacts accordingly....and deeply empathetic and wise Ikem who avoided the corruption of the Palace. And where Ozai stood in line on the day of creation for a second helping of asshattery Ikem stood in line for a second helping of common sense. He's far from flawless, but where he's written in the Palace his defects are more human and he's not quite dealing with the Palace-amplified versions of faults.

it also in every single universe, with the Sins-verse and the Fire Lord Ursa AUs the most explicit in doing so gets directly and mercilessly subverted. Both Zuko and Azula were intended to be weapons. *He* is by every possible standard a 'failure' in the eyes for which his existence was intended. Zuko has no real empathy for Azula but is rewarded for expression it where she was punished. Zuko has an actually healthy parental background with one parent, Azula canonically had no healthy relationship with any adult in her life (and in the heroic AUs having this and that emotional equilibrium is a vital part of the changes to get there).

Azula is a success....up to a point. The goal was, at least as I write with a wee bit of 40K backdated into it a literal Primarch-like concept. Two super-generals who would wage war with fire and sword (literally) and scourge the Earth for Fire Lord Lu Ten. Azula defies her own indoctrination with restraint where she could easily steamroll anyone short of the Avatar or her equals as Benders (of which there are several. Older Benders have advantages over younger ones primarily in experience and time devoted to exploring the nature of their abilities. Ozai is not superior to either of his children or his wife in raw power, but the man compensates by sheer driving focus on drilling his power and prowess to a point that it's easy to neglect that as a Bender he's a mediocrity with middling power.

One of the main cores in Ozai's specific brand of abuse to his children is that this tunnel vision boosted by his APD *did* work for him. It made him one of the most powerful Benders in the world and it made him one of the most powerful men in the world in political and temporal power. He expects far too much of children and when they cannot meet this because even Azula, as powerful as she is from a very young age is a *child* and tends to overexert and push herself to her limits, he reacts violently to this. Which accelerates astronomically when he becomes Fire Lord and gains absolute power to do so at his discretion.

The irony is that in this sense Ozai did his one major act of rebellion against his father and quietly signaled he knew the entire premise that blighted his life was bullshit. By sheer monomania he outpaced people far more 'naturally' gifted than he was. Firebending is always associated with willpower as a spiritual pattern, so one thing Ozai gets entirely right for the wrong reasons is *willpower literally fuels it* and the man has Victor von Doom tier willpower. If there were lantern rings in the Avatar-verse Ozai would be a Green Lantern, albeit in the Thaal Sinestro vein.

It's a small element of humanizing him and even in spite of his APD and inability to get emotions at any real level, the Ozai I write fundamentally fucks up everyone around him because what he did worked for himself in the short term and he very woefully misread this as 'if it worked for me it'll work for everyone.'

These angles get worked into the treatment of the eugenics program in every single AU. One of the main means of humanizing Ozai without making him any less a genocidal son of a bitch is that for all his other flaws he knows the eugenics program is fucked up and really is marginally less evil to his children even with everything else he does than his father. And that marginal gap is that Ozai really does think of Azula and Zuko as human beings with pronouns and names and Azulon doesn't really bother at any consistent level with Azula *or* Zuko.

In spite of using it as a key element of several of my AUs I'm not a fan of the eugenics element in the setting

@eshusplayground wrote a post that laid out the reasons for that well enough. And it goes beyond its effect merely on specific characters. It goes straight into 'including it in a setting and then deliberately VALIDATING IT rather than subverting it.

But since it is canon, it becomes especially hard to make the case that a man who sentenced four characters to the aftermath of a glorified bioweapons program would treat anyone in that especially well. Normal, psychologically healthy parents do not put their kids into the fictional version of the Lebensborn program. If Azulon was not the kind of man who would do that, nothing of the canon backstory of the main Fire Nation characters would have happened in the way it did.

It cannot be separated from his attitudes to them, and does work to illustrate the kind of man he was on a personal, petty level (as opposed to the grander cosmic scale as architect of a world war and the second genocide in it). If your motivations can be compared without irony or hyperbole to any 40K faction (and this element of Azulon's straight up analogizes to the Primarch Project) you're a dick among dicks. So much of a Dick that Dick Grayson would change his name to Richard rather than use it around you.

One of the main elements in how I write Zuko in my various Azula AUs is that he is not in fact in her primary or secondary motivations at all.

This is not the same thing in reverse, up to a point, and it certainly isn't in the canon continuation storyline (which gets a bit of the brunt of my distaste for canon Zuko being a kid who has a lot of deeply rooted sexism with angry and violent aspects to it that goes unexamined but which IMO he would have grown out of if it WAS examined). Zuko has feelings where Azula's concerned, few of which are good. He is almost never the primary antagonist in an Azula story, as that role is delegated to Ursa. He is not going to be the villain as that goes to whoever the Fire Lord is as the Fire Lord's toxic expectations of her are the root of her entire story arc and thus the adult is the villain and not the two years older than she is fellow child.

The main difference between the two is that Zuko invariably gets love, affection, and treated like an actual human in every single universe by one or both parents. Azula is seen as the eugenics experiment intended, as a dangerous weapon waiting to go off and this becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy in some AUs and deliberately and viciously spited in others.

The very reality that Zuko has his belligerence and the ease with adopting very powerful Firebending and being in his own way a much quicker learner than Azula and more of a jack of all trades rather than Azula's master of specific techniques shows that the experiment *did* work up to a point with him. His relative slowness in developing Firebending in certain aspects is the result of being allowed to be a human who Firebends and not magic with a body attached.
