R.I.P. William Anders.
William Anders, a NASA astronaut who was part of the 1968 Apollo 8 crew who were the first three people to orbit the moon, has died in a plane crash in Washington state, according to his son, Gregory Anders. He was 90 years old. My “dad passed in an aircraft incident in the San Juan Islands,” Anders told CNN Friday evening. “The family is devastated and grieving the loss of a great pilot,” he added. The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release an aircraft went down off the coast of Jones Island. [ ... ] William Anders, born on October 17, 1933, in Hong Kong, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1955 and after being commissioned in the US Air Force, he earned his pilot’s wings the following year, according to the US Naval Academy’s website. [ ... ] Anders and fellow astronauts Jim Lovell and mission commander Frank Borman, who died in November 2023, flew aboard the first lunar orbit mission in December 1968 on Apollo 8. Anders served as the lunar module pilot for the historic flight. From the spacecraft, Anders captured an iconic image of Earth showing the moon’s surface in the foreground during the Apollo 8 flight on Christmas Eve 1968, titled “Earthrise.” “We came all this way to explore the moon, and the most important thing is that we discovered the Earth,” Anders famously said.
Although the first moon landing by Apollo 11 in 1969 was a great technological achievement, I think the Apollo 8 mission in 1968 may have had a greater impact on the way humans think about our neck of the cosmos.
The first flight beyond low Earth orbit put our planet in perspective and made people understand how precious and vulnerable it is.
The Earthrise photo became instantly iconic. It gave momentum to the environmental movement and the first Earth Day was marked in 1970.
BTW, the Apollo 8 command module is now on display at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry in the Hyde Park neighborhood which also includes University of Chicago.

Earth Day History
Earth Day, first observed on 22 April 1970, is considered the beginning of the modern environmental movement.
As a response to increasing environmental concerns, like the oil spill in Santa Barbara in 1969, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day to raise awareness about how to protect the environment.
Nelson and activist Denis Hayes organized teach-ins on college campuses that included various groups and organizations, drawing inspiration from protest teach-ins of the era.
With this massive mobilization, the U.S. developed key environmental laws and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was created.
Earth Day 2024 Theme
The theme of Earth Day 2024 is “Planet vs. Plastics.”
This is about fighting the big problem of plastic all over the world. Earth Day organization wants to bring people from different places together.
The goal is to make much less plastic, 60% less by 2040.
We want a future without so much plastic. This is not just about having less trash, but it is also about keeping us and the environment healthy.

The Landless Rural Workers' Movement launched a campaign to support those affected by the floods in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
The movement also lost furniture, souvenirs, and the production of rice and agro-ecological gardens
Amid the most significant floods in the history of Rio Grande do Sul, which as of Monday (6) have killed 83 people, displaced 121,957, and left 19,368 homeless, the Landless Rural Workers' Movement (MST) is launching a solidarity campaign. The aim is to raise funds for actions to support the families affected in the various municipalities of Rio Grande do Sul.
Among them are around 420 families from the MST itself who had to leave their homes quickly. The force of the waters submerged five of the movement's settlements in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre.
"With the loss of the structure of the houses, furniture, souvenirs, and the production of rice and agro-ecological gardens, where many rural workers had already replanted after the flood at the end of last year, the families are still in collective shelters," says a statement from the movement.
The Integração Gaúcho (IRGA), Apolônio de Carvalho, and Conquista Nonoaiense settlements are in Eldorado do Sul. The Sino and Santa Rita de Cássia settlements are in the municipality of Nova Santa Rita. The towns are two of the worst affected by the floods, and humanitarian aid can only be accessed by helicopter.

Willow would emit more climate pollution annually than more than 99.7% of all single point sources in the country. It’s estimated that the oil from Willow, when burned, would add more than 280 million metric tons of climate pollution to the atmosphere over the next 30 years — equivalent to the annual emissions from 76 coal-fired power plants. Willow is a climate disaster we just can’t afford.

hey there, big fan of your posts on veganism (i’m not being ironic i genuinely am!)! would you say however that it’s fair to say that IF you have the capacity and ability to do so, you should strive to at least reduce the amount of meat/fish/dairy/etc you consume? with how much the fishing industry for example pollutes and kills and destroys biodiversity etc etc i personally think it’s a bit :// to still support the (intensive, consumerist, not-indigenous practice) industry. obviously not including cultural regional practices + culling of invasive etc etc. i hope this message doesn’t sound mean or rude or anything, god knows you get too many of those on the regular
Thank you! And yeh I will literally never (intentionally) go aggro on someone who is acting in good faith you don't gotta worry.
My problem with the idea of "If you can, reduce" is that I absolutely agree. I think that if you are able to, you should aim to shop local and eat less red meat constantly. But I personally have not really met someone who this would truly, genuinely apply to.
This is because the ability to have that level of fine control over your diet is one which automatically requires you to have an abundance of privilege in nearly every conceivable way. Less harm and working towards better solutions must be the goal, but who among us on average can actually afford these dietary restrictions, be it health or financial?
I guess what I'm trying to get at is, like so many other things--in the realpolitik of dietary "activism", the people who are already inclined to seek to end consumerism are in the least likely position to be able to do so effectively. The systems we live under make it so that if you feel passionate about, for example, ending inhumane treatment of animals in factory farms, you are likely directly negatively effected by this system, and you are almost certainly the kind of person who has to pay out to those farms no matter what you believe.
I'm unwilling to be alright with assigning moral judgement values to poor people who need to eat and keep the lights on in their homes. The nature of this discussion is one which will always end up treating poor people like dogshit. This is still working under the same currently fallacious principles of veganism, just more moderate. But the fact of the matter is that any food-based activism which relies on choosing to eat certain ways will always villify poor people and set its movement against us because we cannot afford to choose this sort of activism.
#the realpolitik of being fucking poor really does just emphasize so much of my world view anon#i agree with you that reduction is the goal but i feel as though we both must be aware#that making a point of that from the standpoint of a movement or moral activism#will just further hurt people who cannot reach that goal of reduction due to environmental and systemic factors

Hey, yanno how Climate Change is a real thing that is tangibly, at this moment, affecting our world?
Well it turns out, the wealthy and their investment firms have been seeing the mounting evidence that oil companies have had for decades and are slowly starting to think more long-term about their portfolios in the face of rising sea levels, more extreme weather, and the myriad of ways climate crises are affecting...well. Everything. Maybe this means they invest more into sustainability, green energy, building more resilient infrastructure, or carbon offsets. Some of it, of course, is simple corporate greenwashing, but there are those that are taking this trend and packaging it into something called ESG (Environmental, Social, and corporate Governance).
Now some people would say this is predictable, even sensible. Just the good ol’ Free Market(tm) rationally responding to market forces and a changing world.
But those people would be fools! Insidious fools! For conservative sorcerers have come out with a new cursed phrase to explain this new market trend: Woke Investing.
What makes this investing “woke?” Well, much like how conservatives normally flounder when trying to define a word they stole from black people, “Woke Investing” essentially just means any kind of capital investment that they, the fossil fuel billionaire class and their sycophants, don’t personally profit from.
One of these aforementioned sycophants is Andy Puzder, conservative commentator, fellow at The Heritage Foundation, and former fast-food CEO. He calls this kind of so-called woke investing “socialism in sheep’s clothing,” further explaining in leaked audio of a closed-door meeting:
“My father's generation's challenge was the Nazis, who, by the way, were, of course, very proud socialists[citation fucking needed]. The challenge of my generation was the communists, who were, of course, very committed socialists. The challenge of your generation is ESG investing, and it's more insidious than communism or the Nazis.”(source)
You heard it here first, folks. Not investing as much in fossil fuels is more insidious than the Third Fucking Reich.
As usual, the Heritage Foundation is putting their petro-chemical donor’s money where their mouth is. Bills are being proposed to blacklist banks that don’t invest in key state industries, such as West Virginia coal or Texas oil. Fourteen states have already passed bills to restrict ESG-type investing, with Florida Governor Ron “Bullies Kids for Wearing Masks” Desantis leading the charge.
In other words, Climate Denial has reached such a point that so-called Free Market Conservatives who claim to hate big government are trying to make it illegal for banks, investment firms, and financial institutions to make any financial decisions that acknowledges Climate Change is real.
#of course ESG has also been used to describe any kind of internal corporate action#to increase diversity in the work place or implementing new anti-discrimination policies#(which are usually more performative than actually meaningful but that's a separate issue)#a Republican Presidential candidate#Vivek Ramaswamy#has even made ESG investing his personal bugbear#writing such books as 'Woke Inc' and warning of socially conscious investors ''forcing'' companies they invest in#to devote resources to environmental and social policies that are anathema to the right#which is just...a brand new invented crisis by a political movement#in constant need of a crisis to rally their base and justify for draconian legal controls#to favor certain industries and undercut their competition#all under the guise of red scare-type moral and economic panic#ESG#Woke Politics#Climate Change#Capitalism#Republicans#Investment

honestly never really fucked with greta thunberg before but when back in november i saw her wrestle a grown man and snatch the microphone away from him to burst into „no climate justice on occupied land“ i was really surprised also she faced so much defamation in the zio european press (and of course the cowardly german fridays for future movement casting her out and distancing from her these fucking liberal clowns) and on social media but she never backed down just this weekend she was out protesting in malmö sweden against israel’s participation in eurovision and the evening ended in her being dragged away by the police while her followers chanted on i really have respect for her now tbh who knew greta thunberg is actually a serious militant comrade in liberation and justice for all
#the f in the german leg of the movement just stood for fascists for future#like these groups are not the same#shows she and her surrounding core group REALLY care for human and environmental rights#greta thunberg#free palestine

Given the (warranted) suspicion given towards the disease denialism found in both Christian Science and Scientology, it can be said that if the claims of the neurodiversity movement were attached to organized religion, they too would be constantly lambasted.

How one neighborhood in Colombia is tackling climate change at the community level https://one.npr.org/i/1228839451:1228839452
In Colombia's second-largest city, rainy season floods and dry season fires are now a fact of life. As reporter Jorge Valencia found, local residents are grappling with those and other effects of climate change by taking matters into their own hands.

Hi! I really love hopepunk battle jackets with environmental messages, but I've heard some people say that hopepunk isn't really punk? What do you think?
Okay, to preface this, I’m mostly talking out of my ass on this, so anything I say take with a grain of salt
But my understanding is hopepunk is a subgenre of speculative fiction. The term was coined on tumblr and was a reaction to grimdark fiction. The focus on radical kindness, fighting for radical change, and collective action is all pretty punk. That’s why it has the suffix punk, using hope to disrupt the system
So it’s punk in the sense steampunk, solar punk, cyberpunk are punk. It’s speculative and has a focus on disrupting the system. It’s an intellectual movement, and rebellion starts in the mind, so that’s pretty punk
But it’s not punk in the same way hardcore punk, queercore, riot grrrl, or folk punk are punk, as in offshoots of the punk subculture. Punk is a music based subculture, it’s a big part of the culture, it’s a way we connect with others. Punk is the community, it’s every person in the pit with you and it’s sitting in a Denny’s at 3 am with your friends after a show. Punk is rebellion, a fight against the oppressive system and the boot on our neck
So to summarize: kinda? In a lot of ways we’re talking about two different things. Punk as an intellectual movement and punk as a subculture. They aren’t something that contradict each other so something can be both, but it’s a lot like asking if cyberpunk is punk
That being said it’s your jacket so do what you want with it. It’s not like trying to save the planet contradicts punk. Radical kindness meshes well with punk beliefs, so it’s really whatever. Hopepunk is an intellectual movement but that doesn’t mean it can’t also be punk
#answered asks#anon ask#punk#hopepunk#I do think there is an interesting conversation to be had about whether you can truly consider hopepunk a subgenre#because its defining characteristics are pretty prolific in other sub genres#but the punk suffix is there to indicate the disruption of systems through hope and positivity#though the environmental aspect made me wonder if anon was conflating hopepunk and solar punk#which is an artistic movement and subgenre of speculative fiction
