Ranking of “THE EMPRESS” Season One (2022) Episodes

Below is my ranking of the Season One episodes from the Netflix streaming series, “THE EMPRESS”, German historical drama based on the life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria. Created by Katharina Eyssen and Lena Stahl, the series stars Devrim Lingnau and Philip Froissant as Empress Elisabeth and Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria:

1.  (1.05) “Shoes” – Archduke Maximilian gathers support for a plan to overthrow his older brother, Emperor Franz Joseph I, while Empress Elisabeth’s well-intended gesture with a crowd backfires, leading her to befriend the dubious lady-in-waiting, Countess Leontine von Apafi.

2. (1.06) “The God Who Us Has Freedom Sent” – In the season finale, Elisabeth spends her time partying with Maximilian while Franz is desperate to reconcile with her. Leontine gets herself into a precarious situation.

3. (1.01) “One’s Place in the World” – In the series premiere, Elisabeth (then Duchess of Bavaria) and her older sister Duchess Helene of Bavaria travel to meet Emperor Franz, who is expected to ask for the latter’s hand. He stuns everyone with a surprise decision at an engagement party.

4. (1.03) “The Wedding” – Elisabeth marries Franz, and the Austrian Imperial Family gets a taste of her rising popularity. The former lover of Archduchess Sophie, Franz’s mother, attends the wedding and discovers a secret.

5. (1.04) “The Hunt” – Sophie and the Imperial cabinet push for military action against Russia, but Franz refuses to engage. Elisabeth upsets Grand Duke Alexander Nikolayevich, the Russian czar’s heir, during a royal hunt, leading to severe political consequences.

6. (1.02) “The Arrival” – Elisabeth arrives in Vienna for her wedding. Soon, she faces palace intrigue, while Franz attempts to prevent his country from taking sides during the Crimean War.

Ranking of "SISI" Season One (2021) Episodes

Below is my ranking of the Season One episodes from the Prime video streaming series, "SISI", German historical drama based on the life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria. The series stars Dominique Devenport and Jannik Schümann as Empress Elisabeth and Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria:

RANKING OF "SISI" SEASON ONE (2021) EPISODES

(1.05) "Folge 5" - Emperor Franz Joseph I narrowly escapes an assassination attempt during the Austrian Empire's war against Lombardy independence. Empress Elisabeth (Sisi) provides aid at a military hospital and later, persuades Franz to to meet Count Andrassy during a reception in Budapest and negotiate a peace treaty.

2. (1.02) "Folge 2" - Sisi's engagement to Franz turns her life upside down, as her future is now mapped out and she must quickly prepare for her next role.

3. (1.04) "Folge 4" - An assassination attempt on the Emperor and the impending war in Lombardy cast a shadow over Franz and Sisi's happiness.

4. (1.01) "Folge 1" - As one of Duke Maximilian Joseph of Bavaria's daughters, Sisi grows up in a carefree environment. She is forced to accompany her sister Helene to Austria, due to the latter's potential engagement to Franz.

5. (1.03) "Folge 3" - Sisi and Franz's wedding night ends in failure, but Franz decides to uphold Sisi's honor. Sisi seeks intimacy advice from a prostitute she had befriended named Fanny.

6. (1.06) "Folge 6" - After the death of their daughter, Archduchess Sophie; Sisi and Franz return to Austria, where Sisi's family is waiting to assist them through this difficult time.

As someone who took enough game design classes back in the day, there's a few ways to cheat this almost entirely using the texture and lightmap and other things. Also you can "tell" the 3D program to round out the edges of an object when displaying it rather than manually doing it yourself, which will give the impression of more polygons used.

Considering Peitha got her own irl figure, it's very likely that a proper 3D model with all these intricate details in the polygons exists somewhere, but for the sake of the game not crashing, there's a very good chance the model in open world/story instances is a low poly version of that.

THAT SAID, in-game cutscenes (in most games) that have an actual video playing can get away with using the high model versions because the final video file doesn't use the heavy duty software needed to display said models. Think of it like making an irl movie; if you film a sports game, the camera will record the sound and colours it sees, but it doesn't care if one of the players did a 360° flip to land a goal and that the player is named Sam. Same with in game cutscenes; the recording program will record the pixels it sees, not the 3D model.

I hope you don’t mind if I join the discussion about the Sisi series with a conclusion of my own that still puzzles me to this day. Sisi's life has fascinated me since childhood, and I’ve watched everything about her. My biggest issue with The Empress is that Sisi herself doesn’t stand out in any way. I’ll give an example with Sisi (2021) (comparing the first seasons): there, she was interesting and captivating, and Franz’s appalling character made me sympathize with her and like her. In The Empress, the one who stands out to me is Franz Joseph. By the end of the season, I was more intrigued by him than by Sisi, which shocked me and left a bitter aftertaste. But overall, all the characters are very superficial, which is perfect for the average Netflix viewer.

Don't mind at all anon! Elisabeth is SO bland in Die Kaiserin, she is meant to be this free spirit who wants passion and it's rebelious and goes against the restrictions of court... except that nothing of this happens on screen? Her whole character arc is tell, tell and tell: the characters tell you she's such a rebel and terrible empress, Elisabeth tells about how miserable she is, FJ tells you she is sooo different from the other women, Leontine tells you she as an empress will change the empire. But then you watch the series and all that Elisabeth does is: ride a horse, lay down on the floor of an empty room, do embroidery with her ladies-in-waiting, gift away a pair of shoes and get drunk and flirt with her brother-in-law. Honestly, besides the awful medical examination scene, Elisabeth barely seems to struggle at court. You really don't get a) why are we suppossed to believe she is suffering in any way, b) why everyone else is so adamant on her being the worst empress ever. She's just average.

By contrast, Sisi in the RTL series is definetily a more interesting character in season 1 (sadly the writing of her character gets worse as the series progresses imo). With her I get her struggles: her husband is a jerk who is cheating on her while accusing her of doing the same, also there's a war and they're losing it. Was their portrayal of Elisabeth also very inaccurate? Yes, but at least it was being shown instead of just told. And it was entretaining.

What is Imbolc?

Imbolc is a festival that marks the midpoint between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox, occurring around February 1-2. How women in The Apothecary Diaries navigate patriarchy and class

Spoilers for The Apothecary Diaries Season 1

Set in a fictionalized version of imperial China, The Apothecary Diaries follows Maomao, a young apothecary, as she is whisked off the streets of the red-light district and into the Inner Palace, a court housing the emperor’s female concubines. Maomao’s sharp intellect and extensive medicinal knowledge draw the attention of Jinshi, a high-ranking eunuch, who tasks her with handling various odd jobs and solving mysteries. As the show follows Maomao uncovering the secrets of the Inner Palace, it consistently parallels the lives of street courtesans and those of the imperial consorts. Despite the class disparity between them, these women share similar experiences attempting to navigate the patriarchal society that they live in. While some do their best to play by the rules, others find loopholes in social customs through which they can enact a semblance of autonomy. However, doing so is extremely risky, especially for those lower on the social ladder.

When Maomao first enters the Inner Palace, she hears from Xiaolan, another servant girl, about an illness befalling two of the consorts, Lady Lihua and Lady Gyokuyou, and their children. Despite their shared circumstances, the women cannot find solidarity with one another because the system places them in competition: only one child can be chosen as the emperor’s successor, promoting their mother to the top of the Inner Palace. There is a power struggle between them because Lihua’s son is the older child, making her the Empress Consort, but the Emperor favors Gyokuyou and her daughter. Maomao encounters Lihua accusing Gyokuyou of cursing her and her son while Gyokuyou insists she just wants the doctor to see her daughter. Lihua’s aggressive attitude toward Gyokuyou makes sense when viewing their circumstances through a political lens—the death of Lihua’s son would position Gyokuyou’s daughter as the successor to the throne. However, this argument holds no water when Gyokuyou and her daughter are also sick. Absent their political circumstances, one could see a world where the two women could work together as mothers caring for similarly ill children. The only reason they cannot come to one another’s aid is because the imperial consort system pits them against each other.
