Me trying to figure out who Jamie's adopted parents should be before writing them into the story...

Of course I could just go with Jamie's canon mom and make up an original character for the dad.

But since my Httyd AU is like a fix-it of sorts, I wanted to have Astrid's parent have more role in the story. That's why I made them Merida and McGuffin....

... And in future oneshot fics, I want to write them interacting with Jamie's parents. So, I think it would be interesting to have them interact with existing Disney/Dreamwork characters, too.

In addition, I would also let Astrid' grandparents still be alive for the early parts of the Httyd AU. So, Elinor and Fergus could meet who could be their future in law, even if they won't live long enough to see it happen.

That said, Merida's brothers would be there, too. Much older, of course.

I would give them personalities too beyond this...

Like, they're all equally mischievous but in an attempt to make them more rounded...

Hamish (oldest) - Usually takes the lead in the pranks they pulled when they were young. As they got older, he would try to be more responsible but is easily convinced to pull something once Harris or Hubert wanted to drag him somewhere. His defense would either be "It was their idea" even if the plan was made by him whenever they got somewhere, or "Someone had to watch out for the two" even if he was just as guilty in any havoc they raised. Harris (middle) - Laziest when it came to the chores Elinor would assign them as the three were growing up along with Merida. He would often be the first to suggest sneaking off, dragging the other two with him. He totally knows his brother (Hamish) uses them as scapegoats and he's totally fine with that as long as he got to escape chores for a couple of hours. Sometimes, he intentionally gets himself injured so he could skip out on punishment chores after. Hubert (youngest) - Most sensitive one in the sense of pain, but he doesn't like to be left behind and is just as pull of mischief. He's also competitive like his older sister, so even if a prank/plan was Hamish's idea, he'd usually be eager to put it in motion.

I like to pretend that they named the order of the twins age by alphabetically so...

Anyway, I digressed long enough.

In the matter of Jamie's parents...

I was thinking Rapunzel and Eugene at first...

But I want them to be in the same generation of Jim and Dimitri haha.

Right now, playing around with the idea of Taran and Eilonwy.

This was fookin’ stupid.

Merida stood in front of a hundred greeting cards, organized in a row like glittery, multicolored teeth that glimmered in a bizarre, too-cheerful smile. Mer had to take a fookin’ bus to the fookin’ Next Town Over to even find a Hallmark with all these options. Merida plucked one out with the words Get Well Soon written in Pepto-Bismal pink, then scoffed and slid it back into its pocket. How was one of these going to make Belle and Hades feel better about their partner being shipped off across the Atlantic Ocean for serious mental health issues? 

This was a terrible idea. 

But Merida didn’t know what else to do. They’d texted Belle if they’d like to go to the stables, but without Lou around, the Acherons had been strapped in the childcare department and Belle couldn’t get away. Maybe that was when Mer should have offered to watch the tykes, eh, and give Belle some time with Philippe. But they’d balked at that, deleted the text, and felt guilty for how little they could do to help their friend. 

So here they were, staring at words, impersonal and unfeeling, embossed on an expensive card.

Male! Merida of DunBroch Headcanons

You didn't want to be at this tournament

The last thing you wanted to do was compete for some dude's hand and it seemed he [Merida] agreed

You both ran into each other when you were trying to escape the dinner and he was trying to hide his bear mother

His eyes widen when seeing you, before he pushes his mother into a room. You accidentally bump into him, before quickly apologizing

^ "No, it's fine. Don't worry 'bout it-" He shakes his hands, his eyes going back and forth, avoiding eye contact

His mother makes a loud roar, causing you to take a step back, eyes wide, as he awkwardly smiles and rubs his stomach.

"Wow! I'm so hungry!"

You end up finding out about the bear and he tells you what happened

"You," You point to him, "Turned your mother into a bear to change your fate?"

He blushes, since it sounded stupid when you said it like that, "I mean... Yeah- To put it simply."

You help him hide it from everyone else while he tries to find a way to turn his mother back

He thanks you profusely for helping him

His mother bear gives him a knowing look when you leave

But he quickly shakes his head, before shaking his finger, "No, no, no. Don't give me that look"

You lead them away for as long as you can, but they do end up turning on you

Since you helped him, Merida decided to give you a chance- Totally to just appease his mother

He develops a crush on you first, but denies it, because he doesn't believe in love and romance- because ew

But sometimes... Sometimes even he can't deny how his heart rate picks up and a smile shows on his face when looking at you

His mother is the first one to notice and sets something up, much to Merida's embarrassment

Really protective over you. If you trip or fall, he's quick to catch you and pull you close

His younger sisters tease him, but Merida just closes his bedroom door on this face, much to the girls annoyance

Hubert heard Merida's boots following after him, but he didn't turn around. Just shoved his hands further into his coat pockets and turned his head against the cold.

They caught up, though, of course.

Hubert scoffed at them. Even if he felt the first wiggle of doubt in their gut. The timeline did add up, but that didn't mean anything. He could still be possessed. Or raised from the dead by some horrible necromancer or terrible magic of Swynlake itself. Or maybe worst of all: this was just some horrible mechanism of nature.

It wasn't his da. It couldn't have been.

"That doesn't prove anything!" Hubert snapped. "Just drop it, Merida! Da is dead. Ma killed him because she's a fookin' bear! It's fucked up and you can't absolve her by wishing it away!"

Hubert picked up the pace, putting distance between them again.
