Marla Ahlgrimm on Vitamin D And Women’s Health
Tumblr media
Chances are, spending a few hours in the sunshine puts you in a good mood. According to Marla Ahlgrimm, this has something to do with the sun’s impact on your body’s ability to produce vitamin D. Vitamin D is critical to your overall health, and plays a crucial role in keeping your bones and teeth in top shape.
Aside from bone health, vitamin D is important for many reasons. Marla Ahlgrimm explains that people with low levels of vitamin D are at a greater risk of a few severe conditions. Stroke, heart attack, diabetes, and late-life blood pressure are all associated with vitamin D deficiency. In pregnant women, adverse birth outcomes, gestational diabetes, and preeclampsia are all known side-effects of low vitamin D.
Marla Ahlgrimm explains that vitamin D is also important for your heart. However, scientists don’t fully understand the reasons why. Although there are many clinical studies currently under way, we don’t have a full grasp on the impact of low vitamin D on the heart. What we do know, however, is that vitamin D supplements can help those low in the nutrient reduce their chances of experiencing a heart attack. One working theory is that people who do not go outside enough get less physical activity, which is a known factor for heart disease.
Tumblr media
People who take vitamin D supplements should do so only under their doctor’s care. While some nutrients can easily pass through the blood, which filters out the excess, too much vitamin D can cause frequent urination, vomiting, and overall weakness. Further, vitamin D toxicity may lead to bone pain and kidney problems. Marla Ahlgrimm also points out that too much vitamin D may be the cause of some kidney stones.
Marla Ahlgrimm suggests getting your vitamin D the old-fashioned way: going outside. If you are diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency, supplements can help, but only under the guidance and advice of a healthcare provider.

Data Shows How to Protect Against Coronavirus and We Address Conspiracy Theories
I’m not, nor have I been, concerned with contracting COVID-19. Pathogens infect people who are vulnerable. The concept of random/chance infections doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. If a pathogen does kill everyone and anyone regardless of how healthy the host is the pathogen would burn out its host supply. Evolutionarily speaking this isn’t something that makes sense.
The medical science community is just now discovering how gut health is synonymous with overall health. Of course, they’re trying to figure out what drugs can be made from the revelations and not how one can take their health into their own hands because the truth is not profitable. The truth is the only way to sustain proper gut health is to continually eat a wide variety of raw vegetables and herbs while avoiding toxic foods and chemicals that imbalance the microbiome.
Studies are showing a number of factors that play a role in the severity of COVID-19 symptoms. Some of these we have control of and some of these we don’t. Let’s start with those we have no control over.
Age
Viruses like influenza are more likely to injure and kill both the young and the older population, given their more vulnerable immune systems. But COVID-19 is a little different.
Children under the age of 18 are far less likely to have symptoms of infection, and they are also less likely to need hospitalization, and kids are less likely to die of COVID-19.
People over the age of 75, on the other hand, are far more susceptible to the worst COVID-19 has to offer. Below is a chart with data provided by New York City Health as of May 13, 2020.

Age of coronavirus deaths via World Meters
The data we have is very limited so far but China and other countries, and other states within the U.S. show numbers for 75+ between 20% and 35%.
As you probably heard in the news, coronavirus has been hitting nursing homes hard.
Sex
Men are much more likely to suffer symptoms from coronavirus than women. Data provided by New York City Health as of April 1st states that 61.8% of fatalities are men. Other studies of other regions show similar percentages. Researchers are trying to figure out why. Men face higher risk of complications with other respiratory illnesses as well, as the flu also affects men disproportionately.
The evidence in current studies points towards men having weaker immune systems than women, especially when it comes to common viral respiratory infections. Men are more susceptible to them, symptoms are worse, they last longer, and men are more likely to be hospitalized and die from the flu.
Sue is a clinical assistant professor in family medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland
A study published in Frontiers in Public Health reported that men and women were equally likely to contract the novel coronavirus.
So why are men more likely to die? Theories range from how testosterone affects the body to the fact that men are often less likely to take care of themselves. As usual, it’s likely a confluence of issues.
Blood Type
A study found that people with blood type A were 50% more likely to experience severe COVID-19 symptoms than people with other blood types. On the flip side, those with blood type O were 50% less likely to face severe symptoms of COVID-19.
Race
CDC statistics show that 33% of people who’ve been hospitalized with COVID-19 are African American. Some local communities that report data have found similar patterns.
Black people make up only 13% of the U.S. population but they make up more than 30% of COVID deaths, according to research from Johns Hopkins University.
The disproportionate death rate may be significantly explained by the fact that there’s a higher prevalence of obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes among African Americans compared with Caucasians. But there’s more to it than that.
Black workers are also more likely to have employment that does not allow them to work from home, and they are less likely to have the safety nets that allow them to take time off. There’s a likely possibility that the African American community is more likely to be exposed to the virus. Detroit was hit particularly hard by the pandemic, but the daily cases and the death rate in Michigan have been on the decline for some time, indicating that the virus may have run its course. Perhaps Detroit inadvertently followed Sweden’s model.

While doctors warn against taking high doses of vitamin D The NHS says wants people to consider taking 10 micrograms of vitamin D3 a day throughout the pandemic – particularly if they spend most of their time inside.
Besides blood type, most of the data above indicates that health plays a big role in determining the outcome of someone who is infected by CVOID-19. The data below proves it.
Underline Medical Conditions and Immunocompromised
Of people who were sick enough to be hospitalized with coronavirus, 89% had at least one chronic condition. About half of those patients had high blood pressure and obesity, about a third of the patients had diabetes, and another third had cardiovascular disease.
People with obesity tend to be more likely to develop heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other health issues.
Besides staying fit, what else can one do to protect themselves from COVID-19? Vitamin D, Glutathione, and most importantly, gut health play an enormously important role in determining one’s ability to fight off COVID-19.
Vitamin D
Some studies have indicated that vitamin D deficiency is linked to poorer outcomes with coronavirus. There are not any studies showing the vitamin D supplementation can help one overcome the virus, and other underlying risk factors, such as heart disease and diabetes make it hard to draw conclusions because people with these conditions are often low in vitamin D.

Glutathione
COVID-19 deaths are attributed to something called a “cytokine storm”, a physiological reaction in which our immune system causes an excessive release of cytokines, a pro-inflammatory signaling molecule. The only treatments modern medicine knows to do for this symptom are oxygen therapy and assisted ventilation.
A new study has evaluated the effects of dose oral and IV glutathione in the treatment of two patients with COVID-19 pneumonia.
Oral and IV glutathione, glutathione precursors (N-acetyl-cysteine) and alpha lipoic acid may represent a novel treatment approach for blocking NF-κB and addressing “cytokine storm syndrome” and respiratory distress in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia.
Science Direct – Respiratory Medicine Case Reports
To be clear, that’s only two cases that were studied in that paper. There are other papers that support the hypothesis, but there is nothing yet conclusive.
Dr. Richard Horowitz, a board-certified internist with a private integrative medicine practice is considered to be one of thes top Lyme disease doctors. He has built a practice around combining classical and complementary treatments for Lyme diseases.
“It is a miracle and it’s not,” says Horowitz of glutathione, which he has used on thousands of patients in his medical practice over the past 30 years. “It’s already in the literature—there are published articles on glutathione showing that it has anti-viral activity against herpes viruses, HIV, and hepatitis. The problem is, all of the COVID research is happening through pharmaceutical companies. No one is looking at natural approaches. You hear a little about how low vitamin D might put you at risk, so it’s coming out in dribs and drabs.” And just like with vitamin D, you can be deficient in glutathione—especially if you’ve been exposed to a lot of environmental toxins (which is everyone). Older people are also more likely to be depleted of the compound.
Two Potential Treatments for COVID-19 Unfold in the Hudson Valley
Gut Health
In the first case of novel coronavirus reported in the U.S., the patient reported two days of nausea and vomiting along with diarrhea in addition to respiratory symptoms. In some small studies, researchers have linked patients with gastrointestinal issues to poorer coronavirus outcomes. Poor gut health seems to equate to severe disease symptoms including higher fevers and a greater risk of liver injury.
The suggestion is that the gastrointestinal symptoms are caused by the virus invading the ACE2-containing cells that are found throughout the bowel. This, together with the presence of the virus in the stool, suggests the gastrointestinal tract as another possible route of infection and transmission.
The Conversation – Worried about coronavirus? Pay attention to your gut
But it’s not just that the virus attacks the gut. Science is on the verge of discovering that our gut microbiome supplies our entire body with its microbiome. And what they don’t yet know, but is nevertheless true, is that a body with a healthy, diverse, and plentiful microbiome is a much less hospitable host for foreign invaders.
The health of our gut bacteria plays a crucial role in how our immune system reacts to every disease, including coronavirus. Diet is crucial to developing and maintaining healthy gut flora. The wider variety of raw vegetables and herbs one consumes, the more diverse one’s gut bacteria will be. And diversity is key to a healthy microbiome.
This article, How To Heal Your Gut, goes into detail about how to develop a healthy gut microbiome and is the basis for ridding the body of and being less susceptible to nearly every disease.
From our sister company, Green Lifestyle Market, here are our top four supplement picks for anyone concerned with COVID-19:
Liposomal Glutathione
Forumla SF722
Abzorb
Vitamin D/K2 Liquid
But don’t skip the aforementioned gut health article! Diet is far more important than supplements, and if finances are tight, put your money towards healthy food before you purchase supplements.
And now that you have some facts to arm yourself against COVID-19, let’s talk analysis some of the so-called “fake news” that’s going around regarding coronavirus.
Coronavirus Conspiracy Theories
Germs are real, and they can kill you. But cellular health is what separates the vulnerable from the robust immune systems. Your gut is the engine that powers your body. While this should seem obvious to anyone who has even a rudimentary understanding of biology, it’s still considered conspiracy theory to suggest that getting ill with a virus is anything more than bad luck, even though the science continually supports our position. Speaking of conspiracy theories, let’s debunk a few.
Coronavirus Doesn’t Exist
Enough people have been sick and enough people have died that this conspiracy should be put to rest. On social media, there are lots of posts asking, “Do you know anyone who has actually gotten coronavirus?” Yes, I do. And when I comment as such I am often accused of being in on the conspiracy, or they say the people I know died of something else falsely attributed to COVID-19 (which does have some truth to it, considering that healthy people do not die from this disease). The problem with the biggest conspiracies, like flat-earth, is that people just don’t keep secrets well enough. If coronavirus were a hoax, there would be massive amounts of people sounding the alarm.
It’s 5G
There are many people claiming that people who think they are suffering from COVID-19 are actually being killed by 5G wireless. The timing is close but not close enough to make this conspiracy work. It is possible that 5G infrastructure could exacerbate symptoms, but that’s also true for glyphosate, refined sugar, fluoride, and other toxins we ingest daily. There aren’t yet any studies on the effects of 5G because the cellular companies don’t want them, but some studies that indicate 4G is associated with problems for our health. And if the studies’ conclusions are true, 5G is likely to be worse. But there are also a lot of studies that indicate cellular frequencies don’t directly harm our health. What we do know for sure is that radiation from towers and our cellphones, and Wi-Fi, is harming birds and bees along with other animals and insects. This is reason enough to be concerned with our own health regarding EMFs. Whether it’s direct effects or indirect (environmental degradation), EMFs aren’t good for us.
The Coronavirus is a Bioweapon
You may have heard that Bill Gates had coronavirus created In a lab to implement the New World Order and install human trackers on all of us.
Bill Gates is a dangerous man with many foolish ideas. But he’s not powerful enough to pull this off and I don’t think he’s “evil”. He seems to be a perfect example of how true this quote is:
It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends upon his not understanding it!
Upton Sinclair or curmudgeon H. L. Mencken
But the engineering of viruses is happening, and we’d be foolish to completely rule out the idea that a government or company would accidentally or purposefully release such a virus. The vast majority of scientists don’t believe COVID-19 was engineered accidentally or on purpose, but viruses are being genetically modified. There are some scientists who do believe COVID-19 was manufactured, and governments, as well as corporations, have been known to lie to us every chance they get.
This is a Made Up Virus to Get Trump Out of Office
The virus isn’t made up, but it’s pretty clear the left is leveraging the pandemic to help get Trump out of office. For evidence, there is plenty of blatant hypocrisy to chose from. If things were reversed, the Democrats would be all about restarting the economy while republicans would be sheltering in place and screaming about how Dems are trying to kill us all.

Conclusion
I stated that healthy people aren’t dying from coronavirus. With some online searching, it is easy to find plenty of media claiming this is not true. Stories such as one about a very physically fit man who almost died of coronavirus and one about a child in California who died are used as “A devastating reminder that COVID-19 infects people of all ages.” But it’s important to note that these cases are extremely rare, and one should also understand that strength and physical fitness are not synonymous with good health. Many men who can run marathons in their 20s and 30s develop autoimmune diseases in their 40s. Children who died, as rare as this is, were not in good health either.
If the CDC had our best interests in mind, they would have at least said something about the importance of eating right during a pandemic instead of trying to frighten us into sheltering in place.

Initial Impressions
So I have been asked to start a blog to record how my exchange goes by the Dean of my homeschool. To give you all some background, I am studying a Bachelor of Design in Graphics through the Academy of Design Australia. I have  come to Vancouver, Canada to spend two quarters studying at La Salle college, which used to be the Art Institute. This is my first time blogging so I hope it doesn't become too boring.
My exchange here was necessary for me because my Permanent Residency card was about to run out and I need to renew it. The exchange all came together really quickly and I didn't have a full two weeks to get everything together. I finished my exams on the 21st of June and then left Australia on the 1st of July to Arrive in Canada the same day (time travel!).
I am lucky to have lots of friends in this country because I used to live here for many years. My friend Katie picked me up from the airport, late as usual for her, and brought me back to her place where she had a free room while she was waiting to find a new room mate. I wasn't planning to live with Kate, because the rent was a little higher than I thought I could make work, but when I got here and remembered how beautiful the view is, I couldn't say no to living here. So finding a place to live short notice became the easy task!
Since I arrived on Canada day, my first night was celebrating and fireworks all over the city which we could watch from the deck outside my room! Canada was celebrating me getting back home. Not really but it sounds good! After my first night I had a day or two to settle in because the semester started on July 3rd, but my first class was the Tuesday the day after.
Coming from the Academy where all classes are between 9am and 6pm (for the longer ones), I have class Tuesday which is scheduled from 6:30pm to 10:30pm. My instructor is super nice and let us decide to have the class from 6-10 instead so that we can leave a little earlier. My other two classes are 1:30-5:30pm on Thursday and Friday. I like having classes so spread but it does make it harder to find a job which will work around that.
My classes are Art Direction, Ethics, and Foundations of Electronic Production. I only have three this quarter which is nice for workload but I don't know what my next quarter will look like. Before I get into describing my classes, I will tell you about the other struggles. Finding a job was tougher because of my schedule. It took me about three weeks, which has eaten away all of my measly savings, but I am working at a company which I worked for previously. My first day is today! It could have been a week ago but I had a big project which I wanted the day to prepare for.
Ok, so the classes! After my first class in each of them I was panicking! I thought that the workload seemed massive and the amount of work that we would be producing would be very crazy, but the stages are more manageable than my first impression. I also thought that I was very far behind the rest of my classmates when I started because of the discussions and the way they seemed to shrug off the pressure. My first submission was the very next week and I was embarrassed to show my work, but I soon discovered that I was not at all behind and I shouldn’t have worried at all!
My school in Australia is very theory based and we generally have one main assignment brief each class, each semester. We learn a lot and then at the end of the semester we have exams to test what we have learned. Here, only one of my classes has an exam and its a mid-term! We create a lot more work here and its all to create portfolio pieces! Another comparison I have is that my instructors in Australia talk a lot about how competitive the industry is over there because of the large number of Designers. Over here, the industry is huge and designers are in demand which is amazing for me because I plan to move here at the completion of my degree!
OK! Art Direction! This is the first class of my week each week. This class we learn about being an Art Director. My first assignment was to direct a photographer to create three magazine covers to match a current food magazine. I chose the magazine Prosto, which is a Russian food magazine, and has a wonderful messy cover style. I encourage you to look it up and I will add my covers as soon as I can figure out how! We had to create our covers as mockups using found images from the internet to show to our Photographer, which was another member of our class who we chose by picking names from a hat. We had a few in class exercises about photographing food and consistency. The photoshoot was to take up a whole class and we had to bring in the food we were to photograph along with all our backgrounds, props, and of course our camera and any gear we needed to be the photographer for someone else. My photoshoot went amazingly well and I got the exact shots I wanted because I prepared really well and I had a fantastic photographer! That all gets handed in today for class.
Ethics is a theory class. We talk about ethics, morals, and how they should influence decisions. It is the most boring of my classes on paper but its actually a really interesting class and the discussions are really engaging. This week is my mid-term and then it’s all small written papers and one final large written essay. I should mention now that in all classes we are graded on participation as well as our work, which means that we have to participate in discussions and show up on time to every class.
My final class each week is Foundations of Electronic production. This is the class which I was warned about because it has the highest workload but so far I am finding it comfortable. My first assignment here is to rebrand a destination or town. I have chosen Nelson, BC where I used to live. We have a lot that we have to create, but the largest part of the assignment is to create the branding guidelines. We have to make this professional and well written which will be the hardest part. The other assignments for this class will also be big. This class has a lot of in class work which needs to be created within the small amount of time we have in class. This adds a lot of pressure but helps to generate ideas quickly which we can refine later at home for the homework.
All of the instructors that I have here are amazing! They are very helpful and understanding. The campus is so much nicer than the temporary campus that the Academy has. There is also a lots of interesting courses offered on the campus, which is neat to look around. Music production, Culinary, Video game production just to name some of them.
All in all, I’m having a good time and learning a lot. Living with Kate is super awesome! We have been floating on a small lake a couple of weekends, we watch baseball, have poker nights, and nights in watching TV. There is a lot of good options for food and many which are really cheap! Living in the city, means I can find just about anything I want and usually pretty cheap. I’m getting lots of sun, which is fixing my vitamin D deficiency, and I’m getting my Canadian life back on track. I will try to keep this blog updated as much as possible with impressions and work!

it's been a while
But, here we are. A year ago, I started my journey to figuring out why my body was slowly letting me down. Why I was constantly sick of fighting some infection.
Coming from a low income background, healthcare in the United States has always been a luxury. After a certain age, I no longer had access to basic, necessary healthcare such as dentistry, optometrist, he’ll, even a general practitioner.
As a kid in school, I was constantly sick. 3 years in a row, I contracted different strains of mono. Every other week, I was out of school for something. It was tiresome. Teachers didn’t believe me. Doctors thought I just didn’t want to go to school. (Contrary to that, I didn’t mind school. I kinda liked it. I had friends. I could easily socialize. I loved playing music.) But, I was constantly sick. 9 times out of 10, my mom believed me. So, I was lucky in that department. A lot of parents don’t.
Flash forward to my early twenties, a few years out of high school. My health seemed pretty normal. I’d catch whatever bug was going around, as I was constantly spending time with friends and at work. But, for the most part, my health was, for all I knew, /normal/. I functioned. With barely very much setting me back.
Skip to about two years ago. Around the age of 27. I started constantly getting sick. And staying sick. The common cold, again, turned into a month-long affair of agony and the worst of the worst. But, I never thought anything of it. I attributed it to my chronic eating disorder and the bad teeth I had due to said eating disorder. The past two years of my life, I essentially lived on antibiotics and OTC pain relief. I had several ER and urgent care visits, the whole spiel. No one thinking more than, hey, she’s got ____ that’s going around.
A little over a year ago, it started getting bad. I was constantly waking up with some sort of ailment. Or pain. And then the massive anxiety set it. I made it my 2016 resolution to get healthcare and stop at nothing until I found a reason. Found doctors. Found out what was going on.
I have to admit, I really wasn’t prepared for the can of worms I was about to open. I didn’t think it would be a whole process and multiple doctors and specialists and referrals and appointments every other week. But, it was.
I started with one GP who refused to give me referrals to specialists despite obviously needing them. Especially a psychiatrist. She just wanted to treat me with antidepressants and call it a day. I wasn’t satisfied and become extremely discouraged. At my last appointment with her, my Pap smear came back irregular so she DID refer me to a gynecologist. Luckily, I had the name of a good one in the area that treats a close friend of mine. So, I hopped on that referral. Luckily, my gynecologist is a DO and extremely caring. She listened to my concerns about my massive anxiety attacks and got me in with a psychologist. First step.
I love my psychologist. She listens. She works with me. She respects that I research EVERYTHING and am educated. It feels like teamwork with her. Not just her telling me what to do. I’ve been properly medicated for my severe-to-extreme anxiety and panic disorder since August of last year and it’s really helped me conquer the other stuff.
Back to the gynecologist. The abnormal Pap smear came back with, layman terms, pre-cancerous cells in my cervix. They biopsied my cervix in the summer and it came back okay, but not great. So, we formulated the plan to keep checking every 3 months. In November, I had another check up and the results came back that the cells were regressing and high grade dysplasia was present, when no dysplasia was present in the summer. So, we decided to set up a biopsy for December.
In the meantime, for two months straight and multiple ER visits, diagnoses, medications and steroids later, I found no relief in my right ear and jaw. My glands on my right side were swelling and staying swollen. I was in constant, deep pain. Pain I had never dealt with before regarding my teeth.
After 3 ER visits within a month and a half, and basically being written up as a drug seeker (despite refusing pain management 2 out of 3 times), I found a new GP. Also at the recommendation of my godsend gynecologist. I like her. A lot. She listened to my concerns. And before I could even recommend an ANA panel (as advised by my best friend with lupus), she had already written up the bloodwork order. She did recommend I go back to my dentist about my teeth, figuring at least that was partly the problem. I had 3 teeth removed in the back of my right side. One did have a small infection, but he didn’t believe that it was causing such misery and pain. He certainly didn’t feel like it was what was causing my glass to swell up, but he did feel like those teeth weren’t helping the problem.
My ANA panel came back positive. She did check for rheumatoid arthritis since my complaints involved joint and muscle pain and RA is present in my maternal side. But, that was fine. So, she got me a referral to an ENT for the glandular swelling and a rheumatologist appointment for the ANA+ results. In addition to that, I have a severe vitamin D deficiency, but everything else seemed more or less, okay. Some things were teetering a little high or a little low, but we’re hoping that much can be managed with supplements and an overhaul of diet.
So. I had my second cervical biopsy of 2016 right after Christmas. The results were high grade and rapid progression of the pre-cancerous cells in my cervix. So, we set it up for me to have a little minor surgery to remove some of the lesions and cysts. Two actually. And to do a more thorough biopsy of my vagina.
Before that surgery. I saw the ENT at the beginning of this month. I like him. A few looks with a scope and he can tell I have sinus problems. They’re jacked. So, they’re working on scheduling me a CT scan. He wants to do the CT scan and then same day have my check up appointment so we can get it all looked at without a wait in between the CT scan and the checkup. I like that. So, for one visit, I like him. We’ll see about the CT scan and what comes back on my sinuses. I have yet to get a call about that, but they did say it’d take a few weeks.
So, a few days later, I had my minor surgery on my uterus. One of the samples came back really disconcerting, so on the 23rd I’m going in for laser surgery to remove ALL of the cells, lesions, cysts on my cervix. I’m not excited. Just having two lesions removed was painful enough. I suspect this will be tenfold. And I’m JUST now feeling back to par as a human. Two week later. When recovery time is usually 5 days. But, that also lends to the ANA+ result. And that there’s something wrong with my immune system. Obviously, it’s an autoimmune disorder. Which, is the question. And I won’t know until I go to the rheumatologist. Which the only rheumatologist in my area accepting my insurance can’t get me in until mid-April. I thought I could wait it out, but I can’t.
So, at the advisement of my friend, I think I’m going to bite the bullet and go to an out of state doctor at the Lupus Center in Pittsburgh. All I need is a positive ANA to get an appointment, don’t even need a referral as long as I have that ANA+.
I’m not healing well, especially after minor surgeries. I’m still experiencing glandular problems and constant joint and muscle pain. It’s tiresome. It’s exhausting. And it’s causing my anxiety to go nuts just sitting around and waiting. Plus, this rheumatologist doesn’t get that great of reviews.
At this current time, I’d rather go to a highly rated doctor and get a proper diagnosis, even if I have to travel, and do follow up care with a kinda shit doctor locally. So long as I have a confirmed and proper diagnosis, I can deal with a shit doctor. But, if I have nothing but, “hey I have this very vague result that confirms there’s something, but which out of the hundreds of possibilities is the question”, it’ll be hard to progress with someone who is known to ignore symptoms and misdiagnose patients.
Statistically, it takes a person 5 years to get a proper diagnosis after that initial ANA result. Especially in rural states like my own, where specialists tend to steer clear from because there’s not a lot of business to drum up. Which is understandable, but unfortunate and unfair. Especially when my area has one of the largest clusters of autoimmune disorders in the nation. I have my theories on that, but that’s a whole other post.
I just don’t think I can wait 5 years for a proper diagnosis. I’m tired. I’m stressed. And if I wait 5 years, I’ll be 34 going on 35. That’s extremely unsafe. I need a diagnosis now. Or as soon as I can possibly get it.
So. A year in. I’ve made progress into my journey of battling chronic illness. It’s just discovering WHAT is getting me. And that’s easily the most insanely frustrating thing. How slow the process is going. And how every step forward I take, I take two giant leaps back.
I’m trying to remain patient. I’m trying to live by the spoon theory. But, it’s maddening when this person is not who I am nor want to be. I don’t like not knowing how I’m going to feel one day to the next. I don’t like having “good days” and being afraid to go to sleep because I might wake up to a really bad day. And especially with no real answers besides, “well, it’s something. What, though? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.”
This journey is draining me. And despite a wonderful boyfriend and amazing friends supporting me and holding me up, I still break down. I’m scared and I’m tired. I’m not happy. It’s misery, physically and emotionally. And I hate having to treat myself with kid gloves. Luckily, my friends understand, but I’m a social person. I love my friends and boyfriend. I want to see people. I don’t want to have to worry about being around them if they’ve recently had a simple cold for fear that if I catch it, that means a month of being sick and miserable because my immune system just shits the bed at the sign of anything different.
It’s stressful. Extremely. My hair is thinning. And who knows if that’s because of the stress and worry of it all, or a symptom of whatever’s going on. Could be either or. Could be both. Who knows.
“Who knows.” That’s what kills me. That’s what’s driving me insane. I want to know. I need to know. Because I want to be okay. I want to go back to doing all the things I love without worry. And I want to be the partner my boyfriend deserves. Someone equal. Someone present. Someone who doesn’t hold him back and is basically a glorified patient. I know he’s understanding. I know he cares. But, I still worry. I still fear that he’s going to get tired of this. Of me. Of me being completely different than who I was when we first met. Than when we first got together almost 15 months ago. I don’t want to feel like such a burden on him. I hate feeling like I’m hindering him in some way. I hate it. I loathe it. Entirely.
I just hate this whole thing.

Can Gluten Cause Headaches?
Can gluten cause headaches?
This simple answer is yes.  Let’s dive in… I bet it’s safe to say that you’ve experienced a headache or two in your lifetime. Maybe even more. Because headaches are one of the most commonly reported medical complaints. And they can range from a dull ache to debilitating pain.
Headaches are most often treated with pain killers and other prescription medications. However, these treatments don’t address the underlying problem. They don’t eliminate your triggers. Plus, there’s a risk of addiction as well as other serious side effects.
The fact is your diet and lifestyle influence every aspect of your physical and emotional health. And there’s undeniable evidence that gluten is associated with a long list of symptoms, abnormalities, and diseases. So it’s not surprising that gluten may also trigger headaches.
There are several types of headaches defined in the medical community. In this article, I’ll discuss how gluten can contribute to migraines as well as cluster and tension headaches.
Gluten-Induced Migraine Headaches
Migraines are the 3rd most prevalent disease and the 6th leading cause of disability worldwide. The pain ranges from moderate to severe and typically lasts for 4 to 72 hours.
In many cases (but not all), migraines occur on one side of the head. You may also experience:
Pulsating pain
Nausea
Vomiting
Sensitivity to light or sound
Visual and/or sensory impairments
Plus, any movement can make things worse. This is why many sufferers often lay in a dark, quiet room and remain there until the migraine passes.
Some people develop chronic migraines. They spend more than half their days in pain. Many never find permanent relief. Because most triggers are overlooked.
Triggers for migraines may be genetic or hormonal. But they may also be environmental, including food and chemicals in our food, cleaning products, and cosmetics. Plus, environmental factors can influence our genetics and hormones creating a vicious cycle.
Based on my professional experience, I’m certain that gluten is a migraine trigger for some. And there’s plenty of scientific evidence to support my findings.
Migraines Are More Frequent with Celiac Disease
A recent meta-analysis looked at 40 scientific studies published since 1987 that discussed the connection between headaches and celiac disease. From the data, they determined that the prevalence of headache (mostly migraines) among those with celiac disease was 26% for adults and 18.3% for children. However, the prevalence of migraines among the general population including both adults and children is only 12%. Thus, these numbers suggest that migraines affect those with celiac disease more frequently than those without.
In this study, researchers found that those with celiac disease were 4 times more likely to experience migraine headaches than a control group. And while migraines didn’t last as long as the control group, they occurred 2.5 times more frequently than those without celiac disease. When put on a gluten-free diet, migraines disappeared in 25% of the celiac patients. And 38% experienced a reduction in severity and frequency of their headaches.
Migraines as a Symptom of Celiac Disease
Numerous case studies suggest that migraines of unknown origin (a.k.a. idiopathic) may be one of the first symptoms of celiac disease.
In a study of 48 school-aged children with celiac, neurological symptoms were the first sign of disease among 33% of them. And migraine headaches were the most frequently reported symptom. All of the children in the study were put on a gluten-free diet. Migraines and epilepsy were the two neurological symptoms that responded favorably to the diet.
A woman in this case study was diagnosed with celiac disease only after visiting her doctor due to migraine attacks that involved neurological impairments. Once placed on a gluten-free diet, her severe migraines never returned. And a similar experience was reported in this case.
Another case study involved a young woman in her early twenties that presented with chronic migraines along with hives, joint pain, and missed periods. All neurological and hormonal tests performed could not explain the symptoms she was experiencing. The only clue was a potential gluten sensitivity picked up by a skin prick test. So she was placed on a gluten-free diet and her symptoms disappeared.
The doctors then challenged her system with gluten to further test their hypothesis that gluten was the cause of her symptoms. Not surprisingly, the woman broke out in hives within 20 minutes, and she had a severe headache the following day.
Gluten-induced Nutrient Deficiencies and Migraines
In some cases, migraines can be caused by the build-up of calcium in the brain known as cerebral calcification. And a folate deficiency is believed to contribute to this condition. Interestingly, folate deficiencies are common among those with gluten sensitivity due to gut inflammation and subsequent malabsorption.
In this case study, a CT scan revealed cerebral calcification in the brain of a 36-year-old woman. An MRI scan ruled out Sturge-Weber syndrome and other common causes of cerebral calcification. However, blood tests revealed the presence of anti-gluten antibodies as well as low folate levels. An intestinal biopsy confirmed a celiac disease diagnosis. So the woman was put on a gluten-free diet and her neurological symptoms disappeared.
There’s also evidence that a carnitine deficiency caused by gluten-induced malabsorption can contribute to neurological symptoms. In this case study, a gentleman found himself at the hospital after he started experiencing a range of neurological symptoms, including chronic headaches. Even though he had previous signs of celiac disease, such as extreme weight loss and anemia, he was never tested.
Celiac disease was eventually confirmed as well as low carnitine levels. The patient was put on a gluten-free diet and prescribed high doses of replacement carnitine. Within two weeks, his neurological symptoms subsided and he remained symptom-free during a two year follow-up period.
Other nutrient deficiencies linked to gluten sensitivity may also be contributing factors. For example, vitamin D deficiency is a common denominator of both gluten sensitivity and migraines. According to this review, studies reported 45 – 100% of patients with migraines had low vitamin D levels.
Headaches are also a symptom of anemia, which is caused by low iron.
Plus, there’s evidence that supplementing with magnesium, carnitine, vitamins B2, B3, and B12, CoQ10, and vitamin D can help prevent and tame migraines.
However, if gluten is causing your nutrient deficiencies, supplementing isn’t enough. Eliminating gluten from your diet is a must to achieve permanent relief.
It’s worth noting that steroid shots that are sometimes used to treat migraines can deplete your body of magnesium and interfere with vitamin D activity. So while they may provide temporary relief, they may also be contributing to a never-ending cycle of migraines.
Brain Abnormalities, Celiac Disease, and Migraines
Brain scans of patients with celiac disease and migraines reveal relatively high percentages of brain abnormalities, particularly in the white matter. (White matter is found in the deepest layers of your brain and it contains many nerve fibers. It’s believed to play a role in learning, memory, and relaying messages to other parts of the brain.)
Out of 40 patients with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity in this study, 10 were found to have white matter abnormalities. All 10 experienced migraine-like headaches. And 9 out of 10 eliminated their headaches with a gluten-free diet.
Inflammation, Gut Bacteria, and Migraines
For a long time, migraines were considered to be a vascular disorder in many cases. The pain was believed to be caused by abnormal dilation of blood vessels within the skull leading to the excitation of nerve fibers. However, this theory was never scientifically proven.
While research is still underway, there’s a current focus on inflammation. This new theory suggests that inflammatory compounds released in the brain may activate pain receptors and make them more sensitive to subsequent stimuli. The receptors then overreact and trigger a cascade of events that ultimately causes pain.
What causes the inflammatory agents to be released in the brain may vary among people. We know for sure that gluten can cause the release of inflammatory compounds throughout the body due to an overactive immune response, nutrient deficiencies, or a combination of both.
Gluten-induced Inflammation is also a form of stress that can stimulate the secretion of cortisol, a stress hormone. Elevated cortisol can further increase intestinal permeability and alter your gut bacteria. This may help explain why people with celiac disease tend to have gut bacteria imbalances (a.k.a. dysbiosis), including more pathogenic bacteria than healthy subjects.
Gut bacteria imbalances alone can also cause inflammation and keep your body’s stress response activated. This creates a chronic state of inflammation, which makes your body more susceptible to disease.
In addition to inflammation, gut bacteria imbalances may cause a rise in certain neurotransmitters that inhibit the secretion of stomach acid, delay stomach emptying, and reduce hunger, which can all lead to nutrient deficiencies.
Finally, certain gut bacteria are necessary to produce short-chain fatty acids, which are believed to have an anti-inflammatory effect in the brain. Thus, gut bacteria imbalances could reduce the production of short-chain fatty acids and leave the brain more susceptible to inflammation.
Oxidative Stress
In addition to the inflammatory pathways discussed above, there’s evidence that pain associated with migraines in some cases may be caused by a lack of energy in the brain or oxidative stress.
Oxidative stress is caused by a build-up of free radicals. And these free radicals can come from within. But they’re also present in our environment, such as processed foods made with grains.
In addition, oxidative stress is prevented by antioxidants, such as vitamins A, C, and E as well as zinc and selenium. So this is another way gluten-induced nutrient deficiencies may contribute to migraines.
The Ketogenic Diet and Migraines
A ketogenic diet is low in carbs and high in fat. Thus, it’s usually grain-free, which means it’s also gluten-free. And research supporting the use of ketogenic diets to treat migraines is promising.
Eating a ketogenic diet causes your body to switch from burning carbohydrates to burning fat. Eventually, excess fats are converted into ketone bodies. This process is called ketosis.
The brain can’t burn fat for fuel. But in the absence of glucose, it can burn ketone bodies efficiently, which can help prevent energy deficits. However, there’s evidence that ketones are more than just brain fuel. Research suggests they may also help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain, promote a healthy gut microbiome, and prevent the brain from overreacting to stimuli. All potential benefits for those that suffer from headaches.
Menstrual Migraines
Migraine headaches are more common among women. Plus, in over 50% of these cases, migraines are associated with menstruation due to hormonal changes.
However, while menstrual migraines may be common, they’re not normal. It’s likely a sign of an imbalance, which can be caused by many things, including gluten. In this article, I discuss several ways in which gluten can contribute to hormonal imbalances, including nutrient deficiencies and endocrine disruption.
Gluten is not the only trigger for migraine headaches.  The issue can definitely be multi-factorial. If you struggle with migraines, the diagram below shows a number of additional triggers you should be aware of.  You can also watch this comprehensive video on the topic for more information.
Gluten-Induced Cluster Headaches
Cluster headaches occur in clusters, meaning a streak of headaches followed by a normal state. They usually happen suddenly with extreme pain on one side of the head around or behind the eye that can radiate out to other parts.
Cluster headaches may be accompanied by other involuntary symptoms, such as tears, bloodshot eyes, a runny nose, and sensitivity to light. Due to the intense pain, many patients report a sense of restlessness and agitation, which causes them to pace as opposed to lay still and rest.
Unlike migraines, cluster headaches usually only last a few hours, they’re not nearly as prevalent (about 0.1% of the population), and they’re more common in men than women. Plus, the pain is often more severe than a migraine.
Cluster Headaches and the Hypothalamus
Like migraines, the pathways leading to the onset of cluster headaches aren’t fully understood. One of the most widely accepted theories involves the hypothalamus in your brain.
Your hypothalamus is physically connected to the vascular system that supplies nerves to the blood vessels in your brain. It’s also linked to your parasympathetic nervous system that helps your body relax and digest your food as well as perform other involuntary actions.
So it’s proposed that abnormalities in the hypothalamus or dysfunctional signaling related to the hypothalamus are responsible for causing pain as well as the involuntary symptoms. To support this theory, brain scans show activity in the hypothalamus during cluster headache attacks.
Also, since the hypothalamus controls your circadian clock, this helps explain why most attacks occur around the same time shortly after falling asleep.
Another theory suggests that inflammation within the sinuses may cause damage to nerves within the skull.
So how does gluten factor in? Let’s take a look at some possibilities…
Gluten-induced Inflammation and Cluster Headaches
As I mentioned previously, gluten can cause inflammation throughout the body. And this includes within the hypothalamus and the sinuses.
Gluten-containing foods are also high in calories and carbohydrates. And there’s evidence that eating excess calories or high-carb diets can induce inflammation in the hypothalamus. Studies have even shown that animals can develop hypothalamic inflammation within hours of being overfed. Essentially, over-nutrition activates pathways that can cause inflammatory genes in the hypothalamus to be turned on.
This might explain why some with cluster headaches benefit from a ketogenic diet. In this study, 12 patients with cluster headaches that weren’t responding to conventional treatments were put on a ketogenic diet for three months. 75% of their calories came from fat with the remaining 25% from protein and carbohydrates.
Ten out of 12 patients responded favorably to the diet. Most within the first month. By the end of three months, seven patients were symptom-free. And three patients were only having “shadow” attacks. The researchers proposed that the benefits observed may be due to reduced inflammation and/or excitability in the brain.
Another study reported similar results. Patients were given no more than 10 grams of carbohydrates a day for 3 months. Plus, no grains were allowed. Fifteen out of 18 patients with cluster headaches found relief with a ketogenic diet. Attacks disappeared completely in 11 patients and decreased by at least 50% in the remaining four.
Histamine, Cluster Headaches, and Gluten
There’s evidence that histamine, a compound released in response to an injury or allergen, may play a role in cluster headaches. For example, in this study, histamine levels were significantly elevated in patients during a cluster headache attack.
This is relevant because elevated histamine levels are also associated with celiac disease and may even contribute to gut permeability (a.k.a. leaky gut).
In addition, gut bacteria imbalances caused by gluten may raise histamine levels. And medications often used to treat digestive symptoms commonly associated with gluten sensitivity may disrupt your gut bacteria as well as prevent histamine from being broken down and eliminated from the body efficiently.
Gluten-induced Tension Headaches
Tension headaches are more common, but less severe than migraines and cluster headaches. They usually occur on both sides of the head and patients say it feels more like a pressing or tightening than a piercing pain.
Tension headaches are generally believed to be caused by the tensing of muscles in the head. Possibly triggered by stress, eye strain, poor posture, dehydration, and lack of sleep among other things.
If conditions aren’t addressed, the constant muscle tension may alter pain receptors in the brain, making them more sensitive and likely to cause chronic tension headaches.
There isn’t much research directly linking gluten and tension headaches, but many of my clients with gluten sensitivity experience them before going on a gluten-free diet. And research has revealed this too.
Gluten is also well-known for causing muscle pain, which I discuss in detail here. And gluten-induced magnesium deficiency can cause muscle stiffness that may contribute to tension headaches. Because magnesium is necessary for muscle relaxation.
Gluten and the damage it causes also creates physical stress as I’ve mentioned above. This puts your body in a “fight or flight” mode. And your muscles tense up during this time to give your body the strength to overcome danger.
Can gluten cause headaches?
It’s safe to say there are several ways that gluten can cause headaches directly and indirectly. Which is a really important fact for headache sufferers and doctors to understand. Because many people experience chronic, debilitating pain from headaches with no relief from conventional treatments. Common medical treatments also come with serious risks and may even make things worse.
So if you suffer from headaches and you’ve been unable to pinpoint the underlying cause, talk to an experienced doctor about your diet and nutritional status. Get screened for gluten sensitivity. Because a gluten-free diet may be the permanent solution you’ve been looking for.

10 Reasons Why Eating Beef is Good for You and the Planet
Today we’re sharing a post by guest authors Robb Wolf, New York Times Best Selling Author and one of the early advocates of the paleo lifestyle, and Diana Rodgers, RD, Real Food Dietitian and Sustainability Advocate. Robb and Diana co-authored Sacred Cow, an eye-opening book about meat, health, and sustainability, out this month.
The ancestral health community generally accepts the right type of meat as a health food. In fact, eating animals is the number one guiding principle of the Primal lifestyle. Still, some groups advise against meat consumption.
Two of the main arguments that you should give up meat are:
It’s healthier to eat vegan
You reduce your impact on the planet if you’re vegan
If your primary meat source comes predominantly from a drive-thru, then yes, these arguments probably hold true. But there’s a world of difference between mass-produced meat from large agricultural operations, and pasture-raised meat from small-scale farms. The animals’ diet and living conditions have a profound effect on what the meat does for your body and for (or against) the planet.
Here are the main reasons why eating meat the right way can benefit your health, as well as the planet’s carbon load.
Stay on track no matter where you are. Instantly download your Primal and Keto Guide to Dining Out.
Meat Is a Great Source of Protein
Protein is the most satiating macronutrient – it simply fills you up better than fat or carbs. It’s also the building block of our bodies and immune systems. Meat is a low calorie way to get the most bioavailable source of protein for humans. It contains all of the amino acids we need to grow and thrive. Unless you are eating a LOT of vegan protein powders, a “plant-based” diet sourced from industrial agriculture is a sure way to ensure you are always hungry and will consume a lot more energy to get the nutrients you need, including protein. Read more here.
Red Meat Is Nutrient Dense
Meat is not just high in protein. It is also a source of many nutrients that are simply not available in plants. Meat provides B12, highly absorbable heme iron, preformed vitamins, all the essential amino acids, zinc, EPA, DHA, vitamin D, and vitamin K2, none of which are found in plant foods. Plants provide important antioxidants, vitamin C, and fiber. We need this variety of nutrients to survive. Compared to rice and beans or other plant proteins, red meat contains more vitamins and minerals per gram of protein. In order to get 30g of protein, you could eat about 200 calories of beef or about 700 calories of beans and rice.
Meat Provides Critical Nutrients That Aren’t Available in Other Foods
Vitamin B12 is not found in plant foods and is essential for neural development. Other vitamins and minerals that are found in both meat and plants are usually in their most absorbable form when eating from animals. This includes iron, zinc, vitamin A, calcium and essential fatty acids. Even though chicken and beef are both quality sources of protein, beef simply blows chicken away in the nutrient department. It has significantly more B12, zinc, choline, iron, and potassium. Meat contains heme iron, the most absorbable type of iron. Iron-deficiency anemia is the most common mineral deficiency in the United States. In terms of micronutrients, chicken only has more B3 than beef. Recommendations that ask people to reduce beef intake and replace it with chicken or vegetables are essentially asking them to reduce the nutrient quality of their diets. Read more here.
Without Grazing Animals, Some Ecosystems Fall Out of Balance
Well-managed grazing systems mimic the way that herds of bison used to migrate through the plains, biting and trampling pasture while depositing manure, before moving to the next spot and allowing the previously grazed area to rest. If plants are not controlled, then a few varieties typically takeover and shade out other plants. To test this theory, stop mowing your front yard for six months and see what happens. Without regular harvesting – whether through grazing or mowing – ecosystems can become dormant. Grazing animals help stimulate the constant regeneration and growth of pastures and grasslands. This provides better living conditions for wildlife, encourages plant root growth, and improves soil health.
Well-managed ruminants can also help eliminate the need to use chemicals to maintain weeds and other undesirable plants. Controlled grazing encourages cattle to eat types of forage that they may not otherwise select while adding sheep and goats can specifically target weeds and invasive species of plants. The use of chemical inputs like pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides has also taken its toll. Pesticide usage has led to pollinator decline while fertilizer runoff has created a dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico the size of Connecticut, as a few examples.
Good Grazing Management Can Improve Soil Health and Sequester Carbon
In a well-managed grazing system, the rest period after grazing has another important function. The more leaf surface area that a plant has, the quicker it will be able to regrow after a grazing period. By ensuring that the cattle only take the top half of a pasture, producers can ensure that those plants will rebound during the rest period. As plants photosynthesize sunlight, they expand their root systems. Healthy root systems help those plants transmit nutrients into the soil to feed microbial life. The more abundant a root system is, the healthier the soil will be, and the more carbon will be sequestered.
Grazing Animals Can Thrive on Land That Cannot Be Cropped
Removing livestock doesn’t mean that we will free up more land for crop production. More than 60% of agricultural land globally is pasture and rangeland that is too rocky, steep, and/or arid to support cultivated agriculture. Yet this land supports cattle production and nutrient upcycling. Sheep and goats are also well-equipped to thrive in harsh conditions and on challenging types of terrain. By raising well-managed ruminants in these areas, we are able to improve the ecosystems, create better wildlife habitat, and build soil health while also generating a nutrient dense source of protein and other nutrients. Burger King, Cargill and World Wildlife Fund recently announced a new project to reseed 8,000 acres of marginal cropland throughout Montana and South Dakota to ecologically diverse grasslands with beef cattle as the primary grazers to maintain the new ecosystem.
Cattle Upcycle Agricultural Byproducts and Other Materials We Can’t Eat Into Nutritious Meat
Only 13% of global animal feed (including feed for chickens, pigs, and cattle) consists of grain crops, according to United Nations FAO research, and only 32% of overall global grain production in 2010 was used to feed livestock. A staggering 86% of global livestock feed consists of materials that we cannot digest as humans, like crop residues including stover and sugarcane tops. Pigs and chickens are also monogastrics (like humans) and cannot digest these products either. However, ruminant animals like cattle, sheep, and goats can safely consume these materials and turn them into nutrient-dense protein for humans. When looking at what only ruminants eat, the numbers are even lower for grain, at only 10% of the diet for cattle, globally. Grass and leaves makes up 57.4% of global ruminant feed ration. The rest is inedible by humans, like “crop residue” such as corn stalks.
Buying Direct From Local Farmers Boosts Farmer Income and Food Security
The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted many of the weaknesses of our current heavily-consolidated and industrialized meat industry. Choosing meat from local farmers helps to create a new supply chain that pays farmers what they actually deserve for the hard, never-ending work of raising livestock. It can also reduce the number of miles that your food has traveled while in some cases offering high standards of welfare for the livestock. Supporting small farmers also supports the preservation of open space in or near your community while keeping money close to home. Investing your food dollars close to home helps build a more resilient local food system that can withstand crises like the current pandemic.
Grazing Animals Produce So Much More Than Meat
Many people view livestock production as providing one simple output: meat. But when you add up the many products that source ingredients from cattle alone including tallow for beauty products, cartilage for osteoarthritis medications, and gelatin for foods as a few examples, it paints a much different picture of a cow’s contribution to our society.
In most cases, synthetic leather is made from two plastic-based substances polyurethane (PU) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The process involves bonding a plastic coating to a fabric backing to create the look and feel of genuine leather. PVC has been identified by numerous organizations as one of the most environmentally damaging types of plastic. Many vegan leather makers also rely on plasticisers like phthalates to make the material flexible. Unfortunately, the wool industry has seen a similar turn of events. Competition from synthetic fibers has led to a reduction in the price for wool leaving many sheep producers in the lurch particularly in New Zealand and Australia.
Livestock Are a Critical Resource for Women and Children in Developing Nations
When people in a position of privilege talk about reducing global meat consumption, they overlook the negative impact that it would have on women and children in developing nations who rely on these animals for economic stability, food security, and vital nutrition. Two of the leading nutrient deficiencies worldwide are Iron and Vitamin B12. Animal products deliver these in the best form. Meat is a critical component of a child’s diet, particularly in developing nations where improved health and cognitive function is a key step to fostering a healthier, more successful nation.
According to ILRI, two-thirds of the world’s 600 million low-income livestock producers are rural women who are responsible for the day-to-day animal management, including processing, marketing, and selling animal products. The organization has found that when women control income, 90% is invested back into their household compared to only 30% to 40% when income is controlled by men. Enabling women to derive economic independence through livestock will directly improve the health, education, and food security of their households. Read more here.

Faking all the way
According to the advertisements in the newspapers, I was going to learn “How to Live to Be 100 Plus!" "It’s free,” said one ad, “and if you are less than a century old, what have you got to lose?” So, since I am not quite that old, off I went, pen and notebook in hand, to a lecture in Tucson conducted by Earl Mindell, R.Ph., Ph.D., “noted nutritionist, pharmacist, lecturer . . . and author of the best selling Earl Mindell’s Vitamin Bible." The lecture was sponsored by two Great Earth Vitamin Stores located in the Tucson area. Mindell helped found the Great Earth chain of health food stores, which, numbering about 200, is now the nation’s second largest. He has also written Earl Mindell’s Vitamin Bible for Your Kids, Earl Mindell’s Pill Bible, Earl Mindell’s Quick & Easy Guide to Better Health, and Earl Mindell’s Shaping Up with Vitamins—books whose total sales are in the millions. Mindell claims to hold valid credentials in nutrition. Although he does have a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from North Dakota State University, his Ph.D. is from the University of Beverly Hills, an unaccredited school which lacks a campus or laboratory facilities. During his speech, Mindell also said that he studied at Rutgers University, but representatives in Rutgers’ records office whom I contacted could find no record of this. Mindell’s Vitamin Bible was written while he was working toward his Ph.D. His adjunct faculty adviser for the project was James Kenney, Ph.D., R.D., who is currently a nutritionist at the Pritikin Longevity Center in Santa Monica, California. Kenney reviewed the manuscript while tutoring Mindell and told him that it contained over 400 errors, more than 100 of which were important. Kenney told me that most of the errors remain in the published edition. The acknowledgements section of the book recognizes Dr. Kenney for his help and also thanks the American Medical Association, the National Academy of Sciences, the National Dairy Council, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Nutrition Foundation, “without whom a project of this scope could never have been completed.” However, the fact that all these prestigious organizations would strenuously disagree with information in the book is not mentioned. In a section entitled “The Whole Truth,” Vitamin Bible tells what each vitamin and mineral can supposedly do for you and gives advice for self treatment with supplements of many of them. For example, it suggests pantothenic acid for tingling hands and feet, vitamin D for conjunctivitis, and calcium for menstrual cramps. This section also promotes substances which Mindell calls “vitamins” B10, B11, B13, B15, B17, P, T, and U. There is no evidence that any of these substances are essential to humans or that supplements of any of them are beneficial. Furthermore, B15 (pangamic acid) and B17 (laetrile) pose health risks. Another section of the book recommends self-treatment with supplements for more than 50 ailments and conditions including, acne, bad breath, baldness, headaches, measles, mumps, prostatitis, syphilis, gonorrhea and warts. In Vitamin Bible for Kids, Mindell advises parents who suspect that their child is deficient in any nutrient to consult a “nutritionally oriented doctor” or (if mineral deficiency is suspected) to obtain a hair analysis. Among other things, the book recommends vitamin supplements for acne, bronchitis, athletes foot, canker sores, chicken pox, clumsiness, colitis, dandruff, diabetes, forgetfulness, impetigo, insect bites, prickly heat, poison ivy, stomachaches, tonsillitis, and warts. For multiple sclerosis, it recommends orotic acid, which Mindell refers to as vitamin B13. And for children “whose little white lies are growing darker,” he recommends eliminating sugars, refined starches, and junk foods from the diet and supplementing with B-complex vitamins. Mindell is co-editor of Keats Publishing Company’s “Good Health Guides,” a large series of booklets promoting dozens of questionable supplements. His fellow editor is Richard A. Passwater, whose “Ph.D.” is from Bernadean University, an nonaccredited correspondence school that was never legally authorized grant any degrees. Mindell has also written information sheets that are distributed as educational material in health food stores. Although all of them warn that the information they contain “is not intended as medical advice but only as a guide in working with your doctor,” it is clear that health food stores are using them to boost product sales by making claims that would be illegal on product labels. The Lehigh Valley Committee Against Health Fraud has collected more than 60 of these articles dated between 1980 and 1984. Some of them describe how various vitamins, minerals and amino acids function in the body and provide tidbits on research involving these substances. Others promote such products as ginseng, bee pollen, chelated minerals, kelp (to help the thyroid gland), yucca extract tablets (for arthritis), papaya (to help digestion), octacosonol ("the amazing energy sustainer"), and golden seal root (for stomach and liver troubles). Most of the information sheets are misleading, and many contain errors. In #63, for example, Mindell states that research done at Temple University in Philadelphia found that rats fed dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) lost weight. What actually happened, however, was that rats who received dosages 50 times greater than those marketed for humans did not lose weight but merely gained less than expected. Great Earth was one of many companies selling DHEA pills as a "fat fighter” until the FDA ordered all DHEA products off the marketplace in the spring of 1985 . Flyer #44B suggests that supplements of glucomannan (a plant fiber) are an effective appetite suppressant—which they are not. A previous version of this flyer claimed that studies conducted by Judith Stern, D.Sc., of the University of California at Davis, showed that subjects taking glucomannan lost more weight than control subjects. Actually, no significant differences were found between the two groups, and mention of Dr. Stern was deleted after she threatened to take legal action. Flyer #4B suggests that supplementation with lecithin can prevent heart disease, aid anemia, strengthen weak muscles, reverse psoriasis, improve memory and balance, and even “appears to help multiple sclerosis.” (Mindell sometimes calls lecithin “the Roto-Rooter of the nutritional world” because “it cleans out blood vessel walls.") Flyer #31 claims that superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an “anti-aging enzyme” which may be effective against arthritis, atherosclerosis, cancer and senility. Even if this were true, SOD in pill form could not possibly be effective. Tests on animals have shown that oral supplementation does not affect tissue SOD activity—a finding easily predictable from the fact that SOD, like all other proteins, would be digested rather than absorbed intact into the body. Flyers #9A and #9B endorse the theory of Dr. Benjamin Frank that increasing intake of RNA and DNA through dietary measures or supplements will “reverse the aging process.” Nucleic acids, found in all living matter, are basic to cell reproduction. Like SOD, however, those that are eaten are digested and never reach the cells intact. Moreover, nucleic acids are like specific blueprints. If DNA and RNA from yeasts or sardines could actually work in humans, they would turn them into young yeasts or baby sardines Mindell says that everyone should take supplements. He claims that foods from the grocery store are depleted of vitamins and minerals and, therefore, are nutritionally inadequate. He says that smokers need extra vitamin C, those who drink alcohol need extra B-vitamins, and that women taking birth control pills need extra B6. During his talk in Tucson, Mindell said he personally takes “20-odd” supplements twice daily. He also said that “natural” vitamins like natural vitamin C with rose hips are better than synthetic ones. Even Linus Pauling, whom Mindell frequently quotes, has pointed out that there is no difference between the two in nutritional value. Mindell’s lecture included advice that is potentially dangerous. He said, for example, that vitamin A is safe in amounts up to 100,000 IU per day and that any potentially toxic doses carry warnings. Neither of these statements is true. Cases have been reported in which daily dosage with 25,000 IU of vitamin A has caused toxic levels to build up in the body over periods of months or years. And supplements of this strength do not contain warning labels. Mindell also recommended exclusive use of whole grains and said these cannot be harmful unless massive amounts are eaten. Whole-grain foods are perfectly fine for people who are healthy as long as they don’t eat too many of them. However, whole grains contain phytates, which can prevent mineral absorption. Americans with borderline intakes of some minerals could become mineral deficient by consuming excessive amounts of whole cereal grains and fiber. Mindell told the audience that 300 milligrams daily of zinc supplementation is safe, but research reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that dosages of more than 150 milligrams daily may cause serious copper loss. According to Dr. Harold Sandstead, a major zinc researcher, people who take more than 50 milligrams of zinc a day should have their copper levels monitored. In fact, it has been reported that supplements of only 15 milligrams per day can cause above-normal copper loss . At one point during his talk, Mindell tried to persuade a member of the audience to follow his advice rather than that of his doctor by claiming that medical doctors are ignorant about vitamins. Now retired from active management of his stores, Mindell spends much of his time writing, lecturing and appearing on talk shows. Despite the astonishing number of inaccuracies he has been promoting—his ideas are rarely questioned by members of the media who encounter him. Read the full article
