Zürich, Switzerland

Greetings All.  We are in Zurich trying to change our body clocks by 6 hours.  Easier said than done.  We flew yesterday from Detroit to Amsterdam and the idea is to sleep the night away as we transverse the Atlantic - but both Mark and I got maybe 2 - 2.5 hours of sleep during our 7 hour flight.  We left Detroit at 6:30 PM and arrived 7 hours later in Amsterdam at 8:30 AM their time. - but at 1:30 AM our time.  We had a short layover (1 hr and 25 minutes) but in Amsterdam this is JUST enough time to get to your next flight - so we got to the gate and boarded.  The flight from Amsterdam to Zürich is only an hour and while I may have slept on that flight it was not more than 20 minutes.

We got a pretty pricey cab from the airport to our hotel - but we could not face figuring out public transportation as tired as we were.  Sadly - our hotel room was not ready.  We opted for a leisurely lunch in which Mark had cold spicy melon soup and I have garam marsala butter chicken - both delicious - but really all we wanted was a bed to stretch out on.  (Don’t worry I will not tell you everything we eat!!) After lunch we got the news that our room still wasn’t ready and I did something I have NEVER done - feel asleep in a chair in the lobby of the hotel.  But by 3:30 we were in our hotel and we opted for naps - until 5:00.  Hopefully bedtime will come easily...

The theme for this trip is “OLD STUFF.”  We will start with "real old" and work our way to "OMG WAY WAY OLD."  We, in the US, get so excited when we see a structure from the late 1600s  or early 1700s - but that is a joke in this part of the world - kinda a “baby building.”  

So let’s start with Zürich Switzerland - our current “home."

From what we have seen, Zürich is a beautiful city surrounded by the foothills of the Alps mountains located at the northern end of Lake Zürich and built on Limmat River (pronounced “Limit” that flows from Lake Zürich.  This city has a history going back centuries. 

The town was founded by the Romans a bit over 2,000 years ago. Recent excavations show evidence of settlement even before that -  over 6,400 years ago. 

We explored the old city from about 5:30 to 9:00 - or 17:30 to 21:00 - as any citizen of the world would say - with a a few exceptions - like us.

Surprises:  There are no “walk/don’t walk” signs - pedestrians just have the right of way - PERIOD!

There is graffiti everywhere - I was shocked!

EVERYONE smokes!  Or it seems that way.  DISGUSTING!

I went to buy our 24 hour pass for public transportation and was told to just keep in with us.  If asked we would have to show it - but there is no check in - check out system.  Trust, my friends.

Things we expected:  Public transportation options would be numerous and easy to use and very clean.

Things would be EXPENSIVE.

Weekly Update (18/8/2024)

Hello hello, everyone! I was supposed to have published this a few hours ago as it's Monday here already, but alas! This will be a shorter post, just updating what I've been up to this past week :)

Surprisingly, I haven't touched a book besides finishing The Unwomanly Face of War. It was such an impactful book, and I think it mentally prepared me to finally watch Come and See which has been on my movie bucket list for years now. The things told there are brutal and will make you cry for these women who gave so much for their motherland only to be ignored after the war is over. Definitely a new favorite, 4 stars.

Speaking of reading! I finished 2 more Visual Novels, and dropped another. The DNF goes to The Fruit of Grisaia—it had everything to be good and keep me hooked, but the reliance in anime archetypes had me bored out of my mind. So sorry to all the Grisaia fans! Anyway, during the first days I also finished Sexcalibur: Knights of the Pound Table, which was another dumb smut, and one I deeply hated having to read. It was so lazy and in my humble opinion, not sexy at all. Would have DNFed it but I did end up skipping a lot of H-Scenes by the end of the game. 2 stars.

The other 2 VNs were Queen of Moths and un/FRAGMENT. Two very short reads, perfect for a weekend session! Queen of Moths is more of a Pixel Art Horror game. It plays a lot like those older point and click games but, as short as it was, it still makes you tense and ready for a scare. I enjoyed it! 3 stars. un/FRAGMENT. is another short game, more of a linear story this time. It was made for Nanoreno, so the dev only had 5 days to make everything. It was only 10-minute long and had the dev more time to develop the story more, I think it would have been a pretty decent work. The art is pretty nice, and the reveal was not all that bad, although my emotional connection to the character's feelings suffered from my short exposure to the story.

I also started Needy Streamer Overload and it's been so fun! It's definitely keeping me past my screen time limit but it's been a while since I've been this addicted to a game. It's somewhat dark and if you're not in a good space mentally, I wouldn't recommend it. I'm almost done with all the 22 endings! I can't wait for another game from the same devs called Yunyun Syndrome!? Rhythm Psychosis to release. I'm SO excited for that one specifically, since I can properly relate to the protagonist's struggles more (though that's not a good thing, necessarily LOL)

As commissioned by @diowatcher, I've been watching Serial Experiments Lain and I'm currently on episode 6. It's getting extra trippy right now, and I'm enjoying it a lot! The opening is so gooooood, I can't believe I had never heard it before. I've also been listening to the opening to Revolutionary Girl Utena and aagh it's so good! I'm adding it to my anime list.

And finally, I watched the 2020's The Boys in the Band yesterday. It was SO GOOD!! I had no idea this was a cinema adaptation of the Broadway revival, but it makes so much sense; it reminds me of the Falsettos stage revival, though that one doesn't have a movie adaptation, as far as I'm aware.

Anyway, it was truly a queer movie—as depressing as ever. It was an open ending too, ugh! I have a love/hate with queer works, as they have only started to become a bit more lighthearted these past years. I love these darker stories, but they also leave me bleeding (figuratively.) This is going to my favorites!

Listen. I have had a grand total of FOUR panic attacks in the past decade. I have a naturally low anxiety/panic response so it is not characteristic of me.

But today I did some math about how many books I have left in my life given that I am already 22 and that I have minimal time to read (college + multiple jobs + projects (BIG projects like Goncharov) + pets and household responsibilities + Tumblr (yes I "waste" way too long on here except that I enjoy it so it is not really a waste. I could cut my Tumblr time slightly but I don't want to take a major source of joy, community, and socialization out of my life right now)) On top of this, I have DID, ADHD, and ASPD so (or and) my time management SUCKS.

Needless to say, if I read the modern US median ~6.5 books a year (I averaged the median figures presented by several surveys and studies across the past 2 years), and I have 58 years left (a life span of 80), then I would only have 377 books left. I can't emotionally deal with that.

I figure I probably read more than that. But after looking at my progress across the several books I'm reading right now, I read about 16 pages on a reading day, but I miss about one every 3 days, so we'll say I finish a 300-page book in about 56 days. Yep, 6.5 a year. Not good.

However, most of the books I have finished in the past 3 years I have read in 1-2 sittings. I only started trying to read consistently this year. Previously, I would go months without reading because I "didn't have time" and then once I had time (for ex. a road trip) the book would be GONE like a glass of water on a hot day. We're talking as little as an hour for 200 pages. I don't know how I did that either. A maximum of maybe 8 hours for a long-ish book of ~500 pages?

So I could do the book-a-day thing, but only if I have time. I simply do not, plus I like a day or two to mourn or ruminate between finishing a book and starting the next one. So if I really committed, even with my current obligations, could I manage a book every 4 days? Probably. That's 5,292 books in the rest of my life. Somewhat less depressing.

How do I get there? Not by reading for 15-20 minutes every 2/3 days that's for sure. If I had a commute? An extra 40 minutes at least right there. Call it an hour per weekday (40 min plus 20) and I know I'll be busy with chores, projects, etc. on weekends (I never have time Sat or Sun). A book every 1-7 hours so let's call it 5. One book a week, 52 per year, 3,016 in a lifetime. Close. Definitely much better than 377 books left, and that's an hour a day five days a week. The difference of a commute.

Conceptualizing it that way takes some of the pressure off.

Making time for a commute is easy, you have to do it anyway. Taking breaks throughout the day and still getting basic obligations done is hard. I never manage to follow a schedule. However. I can read a book in 1-7 hours. I can finish an assignment in 20 min to 4 hours depending on the assignment if it's close to a deadline and I'm sufficiently motivated. 2-3 assignments per book. Clearly, I could get all my schoolwork done in 3 days, spend a day on Goncharov, a day on any chores that aren't daily, and then, in theory, I'd have a weekend...ah wait. work.

Okay, but I'm not spending my 16 waking hours every day on those tasks. Maybe 6-8 in the plan above. Subtract another couple of hours for various inescapable tasks, and that's 6-8 hours for other things. I could spend two hours reading a day, and two hours on self-care, and two hours on misc. hobbies like music, writing, and Tumblr. A luxurious lifestyle, and more importantly, 2.5 books a week. 7,540 books across the rest of my life. If I can get my shit together time-wise.

What if I had an hour-long commute each way, two hours total? Structured everything else around that? Just decided to drive the half hour to the nearest train station and take the train each day to artificially impose that structure upon myself? I could.

At least I am calm now, because I know that time-famine is an illusion. A persistent one, about as real as an illusion can get with our chaotic lifestyle, but still. It's possible, maybe not even hard, to triple or more the number of books left in my life. Even with obligations and a "lack" of time. I don't even need to quit a job and spend 3-5 hours reading a book a day. I can get two hours a day. I have 7,540 books left.

It is nice to know that if you only have 377 books left in your life, it only takes the time of a commute to save you. I no longer have a sense of terrible scarcity.

Just averted a serious mental health crisis by realizing that if I ever end up commuting to work via train I will triple my reading time

"I'll see you later, dove, have fun!" Y/N grinned when her boyfriend leaned over, pressing his lips to her forehead. "Bye, Seb, I'll miss you," she whispered and he looked down at her, his heart swelling in his chest, full of appreciation for her. He loved her so much. "I'll miss you too, Y/N, but I'll only be gone for around 6 hours." Y/N pouted and he couldn't help it.

He leaned over and pressed his lips to hers in a chaste kiss. "I know. Go now, I don't want to be the reason you're late." He laughed heartily when she pushed him away with a smile. "Oh, doll, everyone knows about us, they'll know anyway." With that, he waved at her and left the apartment they shared. Y/N had moved in with him 2 years into dating.

Sebastian Stan; let's just say, he was a busy man. Y/N sighed and got up from the bed, feeling hungry. They had started dating 4 years ago, and what years those were; the most blissful ones in both their lives. They loved each other to death, and they knew that. Y/N waddled into the kitchen and looked around the various cabinets, finding a box of Mac and Cheese.

It was a funny story, actually, how they met. Y/N, at the time, was working as a barista at Starbucks. One day, Sebastian had walked into the Starbucks where she worked, and she was the one who took his order. He was extremely polite, funny and a bit awkward and just like that, she fell in love with him all over again. Y/N was a Marvel geek and Sebastian had noticed.

"I really like your hoodie, doll, where'd you get it?" he had asked her after telling her his order. And she had looked down, seeing the custom-made hoodie she wore. It was black in colour, but one of the sleeves was silver and had a red star on the bicep, just like his arm from the movie Captain America: Winter Soldier.

Bucky's trigger words were printed on the front of the hoodie. She had blushed furiously, simultaneously cursing and thanking her fate and coincidence. "I had it custom made," she had told him at the time and he had grinned so wide he thought his mouth would tear open. That was the moment where he, too, realized that he was getting a crush on the pretty barista.

And he hadn't hesitated to ask her for her number. He had taken a tissue paper, scribbled his number down and had written what's yours? ;) underneath. When he went to pay for his coffee, he purposely made sure that he wasn't giving her any change. With his notes, he slid her the tissue and she took it, giving him a confused look.

When she read it, her breath hitched. While pulling out his change, she had discreetly written her number down on the tissue, saved his on her phone and had given the tissue back to him with the coins. Both of them had grinned widely at each other when he left. While walking home, he had taken out the tissue and had seen her number written neatly under his. And his heart raced, Y/N is worth it.

Y/N smiled and logged out of her Instagram account after posting the photo. She just couldn't resist; she looked good that day, one of those days where she felt confident enough to post a picture. She kept her phone away and sauntered into the sitting room to watch something on the television. An hour passed before she yawned, feeling tired.

2:05 pm, her watch displayed. Well, there's no harm in an afternoon nap, am I right? Sebastian wasn't home anyway, and it's not like she had anything to do. Grabbing her phone off the dining table, she walked into hers and Sebastian's shared bedroom, plopping down on the bed. She decided to check her Instagram before falling asleep and opened the said app.

She went through the page that displayed all the likes and comments, pausing at one comment. Her heart dropped as she clicked on the comment, her entire being filling with an uneasy feeling. You're only dating him for the money, admit it. Until then, she had never even thought… about that. Throwing her phone to the side she sat up, breathing heavily.

Y/N was currently jobless. After they started going out, she continued working at Starbucks until last year; Sebastian had suggested that she leave the job and work somewhere better, earn a higher salary. Y/N had discarded the idea at first, since the job paid enough for her to go about her daily things and where would she even find another job?

Starbucks was okay. But Sebastian wouldn't hear it. So she left the job, now jobless. She had applied to a few places but hadn't received any news as of yet. They're right. I'm living off of him. I don't even have a job. What does it look like? A broke woman dating a rich, handsome guy? Oh my God, am I leeching off his hard work? All those thoughts rushed through her head in a span of a few seconds.

The more she thought about it, the more she teared up. Blinking the tears away, she lay back down and curled up under the comfortable blankets. His blankets. She closed her eyes, trying her hardest to fall asleep but the tears were proving it to be difficult. Fortunately, she drifted off into an uneasy slumber 15 minutes later.

"Baby, I'm home!"

Silence. Sebastian frowned, carefully walking into the house. "Y/N?" he called out but there was no answer. Keeping the bag he was holding away, he walked further into the apartment, stopping at the doorway of their bedroom. "Aw," he whispered under his breath, smiling, stepping into the bedroom. He gently sat next to his sleeping girlfriend.

His knuckles traced her cheeks but he froze. Why is she so cold? His soft touch was enough to wake her up, because she stirred and blinked up at him. "Seb, hi, welcome back." Her voice was hoarse. "Y/N? Did you fall sick?" he asked worriedly as she sat up, distancing herself from him. "I'm not sick," she muttered but Sebastian wouldn't buy it.

He reached out to cup her cheek, feeling like he had been stabbed multiple times when she leaned away from his touch. "Y/N?" She shook her head and looked out of the window, bringing her knees to her chest. "Just wanna be alone right now." She didn't want to send him away. She wanted to sit in his lap, listen to him rambling about his day…

But she also didn't want to be near him. Do I even deserve him? "What happened?" he insisted, his eyes going wide when she glared at him. "Go. Away." He scrambled off the bed without another word, softly closing the door behind him as he walked into the sitting room, running a hand through his hair. He sat down on the couch and looked around.

What happened in those 6 hours that he was away? Sebastian knew she wasn't on her cycle, it still had another week to come. So it wasn't mood swings. His eyes landed on the empty bowl of Mac and Cheese sitting on the dining table but they skimmed right past it, not knowing that that bowl was the reason for Y/N's sadness. Then he stared at the designer handbag on the opposite couch.

Picking up the bag, he strode back to their room, knocking on the door. Maybe seeing a pretty purse would lighten her mood? "What?" Y/N called out from inside and he opened the door, holding the purse up. "I brought you a gift." Y/N's heart started thudding in her chest and tears glistened in her eyes anew as she stared at the bag with utmost resentment.

"I don't want it."

Sebastian went rigid. She never rejects my gifts. "Y/N—" She started shaking her head. "No. Return it. I'm not taking it. I don't want it," she repeated, her glare now directed at him. "But doll…" he tried, freezing when her jaw clenched. "Get out." Disheartened, he walked out once more, more confused than anything. Now I have to know what happened.

Inside the room, Y/N sobbed silently. The bag was so pretty, her favorite color, the sleek design… she wanted to keep it so bad, but she knew she wasn't worthy of it. Sebastian brought her gifts all the time. Most of them expensive as shit; he had the money to blow off. What had she done for him? Nothing, really. He spoiled her heartily, never once allowing her to do the same.

"You're mine, baby girl, mine to love, mine to cherish, mine to spoil."

She was definitely leeching off him. Outside the room, Sebastian took out his phone and texted Y/F/N, who was Y/N's closest friend. They rarely spoke, but Y/N told Y/F/N everything and he knew she'd have answers.

He ended the conversation and opened Instagram, seeing a new post from his dear girlfriend. Sebastian couldn't help but smile as he liked the photo, commenting a heart emoji. There were only around 22 comments on the post, so he decided to go through them. Which comment had triggered her? He found it instantly and his nostrils flared.

Replying to the fairly rude comment, he typed, how about you fuck off and mind your own damn business? If you don't like her, unfollow and leave. There's literally nothing else you need to do. After hitting send, he kept his phone away and, determination shining in his eyes, ran back to the bedroom.

He threw open the door and a sob escaped the lips of the startled woman. He started taking off the annoying clothes he was wearing until he was just in his boxers, sliding into the bed next to her. She attempted to push him away but the strong man didn't budge, holding her on his lap as she thrashed. Soon, she gave up the fight and melted against him, crying her eyes out.

"I'm sorry," she apologized again and again, her breath hitching. "Hush, baby, it's okay, I'm not mad," he whispered, rubbing her back, helping her calm down. She rested her head on his shoulder, her arms tight around him. "Tell me the truth. What happened?" he asked even though he knew the answer. Tiredly, Y/N narrated everything; from the comment to all her insecurities.

Sebastian gently cupped her cheeks, wiping her tears off. "Y/N, you're mine. I love taking care of you, I love spoiling you, and I don't do it because I expect something in return, I do it because I love you. Don't listen to strangers on the internet, what better work do they have? Nothing but lowlifes. You don't have to do anything for me. I don't want you to do anything for me."

"But Seb…"

"No. No, you're my girlfriend and only the best for my girl. I love all the gifts you get me. I cherish them wholeheartedly. Just you being my girl is a gift better than anything else in the world, to be honest. But I'm going to continue looking after you whether you like it or not. You don't even have to go to work, I'm here for you. I love you." Y/N teared up again.

They were happy tears.

"I love you so much," she cried weakly and Sebastian pulled her to him, cradling her head, breathing her in. "I love you too, doll. Now will you take my gift, please?" She nodded against him and he gently lowered her on the bed, going outside to get the bag. Once back in their room he handed the bag to her, smiling at the way her eager hands reached up to accept the gift.

As he watched her admiring the bag, he knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, till death do them part.

Plane thoughts (sorry for the long post):

1. Why do people pay so much to board earlier? I was in the last boarding group and I got to sit on my ass listening to my music while everyone else boarded. Then when I was on the plane, I didn’t have to wait for everyone else to board because everyone was already on it. So I basically left the gate, got on the plane, then we were on our way. Trust me on this guys. Last boarding group is the way to go.

2. I actually really enjoy flying. It’s the airport part that gives me anxiety but planes? Planes are so fucking cool

3. Humans are amazing. Look what we did. We created magic and can now lift ourselves in the air.

4. So many people have to work together as a team in order to get just one flight off the ground. Isn’t that so cool? People working together to ensure everyone participating in the magic can do so safely.

5. A sunset above the clouds is stunning. I wish I could paint this.

6. I know I would fall straight through those clouds but I want to jump down on them anyway they look so soft.

7. If I were a poet I would write a poem about how these clouds are mountains and how small I seem in comparison. But also how wonderfully significant we all are.

8. There is something slightly dystopian about flights now referring to tray tables as “device holders.”

9. There is a line for the bathroom but I have a bladder the size of a walnut. This should be fun. And I also have a window seat and the two people next to me are asleep.

10. Nothing quite like leaping over a sleeping child while his father watches from the aisle as you attempt to leave your seat

11. It’s almost 8:00 PM and I got no sleep last night so it’s bedtime. Gotta dig out my frog eyes so I can hopefully get some shut eye and wake up as the flight lands.

12. Wait I just saw the drink carts. I must get some water. Then it will be bedtime.

13. It’s dark now but there’s splashes of light shining up through the clouds making them glow. I don’t know what’s doing it cause it’s just in spots but it looks really cool.

14. My hands are currently drier than sand on a beach during low tide. I need lotion but you’ll never guess what I don’t have. By the time my flight lands, I’m gonna have cracked hands. Luckily I think my mom has hand repair lotion I’ll be able to steal.

19. I just fell asleep for five minutes and when I woke up the clouds were gone. Which is sad but I guess also good cause clear skies are better if you’re flying. But I’ll miss the clouds.

20. Somewhere in the sky right now, my older brother is flying. Somewhere else in the sky, my sister is also flying. We are all together defying them laws of gravity. Separately. We live so far from each other but right now we all are in the same location and that location is: up.

21. Okay I thought it was so cool how me and two of my siblings are all currently in the air on separate flights heading to the same destination that I wrote a poem about it. It’s not a good poem as I am not a poet but whoever said art has to be good should be shot. Art should be art.

22. Oh looks like only twenty minutes left. I probably got a restless thirty minute nap in. That seatbelt ding woke me up. I was dreaming of the hotel bed so I guess the good news is I’ll get to it soon. But that’s still probably a good hour and a half away.

23. I still miss the clouds.

24. I wonder if my siblings have started their descent yet. I think my sister flew the same airline as me but I’m not sure. I know my brother didn’t. I’ll have to check if my parents know what airline she’s flying cause if it’s the same I’ll wait for her flight at her gate before heading over to the rental car place to meet my older brother. Yes a plan. I like plans.

25. Executive decision to not wear my frog eyes through the airport. Can’t wear them with my hat and I’m worried I’d lose them. And I can’t possibly lose my frog eyes. They are an extension of my being. I need them. (I seriously can’t sleep without them) Also I can’t wear my frog eyes and my glasses and because it’s now nighttime I definitely need my glasses.

26. I’m not sure if this is true or not but I’m pretty sure it is. Did y’all know that in order to land plans, pilots actually stall the plane? Reminder to self to look this up too. I read it in a Nancy Drew book as a kid and I want to know how accurate that is.

1. why did you choose your url? Well I like two characters with the name sebastian. One is a real person and the other is a fictional character and also i´m a little bit crazy and a freak, so i did choose it.

2. any sideblogs? if you have them name them and why you have them. I have them but one is inactive and the other one is for my gifs. i archive them there.

5. why did you start your blog in the first place? oh at first i had another blog with a school friend. there we reblogged some london and england pics but at one point i wanted to make my own because i found out that there was a f1 fandom. so at first i made this blog only for f1 and slowly widened my interests.

6. why did you choose your icon/pfp? because i have the adult version as a gif header and this pic is special because it has two characters in it and not one. but the other one is so tiny you can´t see him. but i feel like we don´t talk that much about his childhood and i like to show people the difference between his younger version and when he is an adult.

(okay they try to be like twitter) but tumblr is a blogsite. you have a blog here and if you as a person only like and don´t fill your blog then you don´t have to be angered by the fact that a lot of people will block you. so, you see? it depends.

i hate that i’m thinking about pathologic (video game) the entire time but i can't help it. the way characters are constantly bursting into people's houses & going "you’re an angel, you're the best person i've ever met, you're a saint" to someone they just met 5 minutes ago is so. distinct. i joked on twitter that the first half of the book is just alyosha running around completing sidequests, which i still think is true, but once i got to the grand inquisitor part i was like "Okay mr dostoevsky, you’ve got me."

2- What book did you recently finish? "selections from science & sanity" by alfred korzybski, recently featured in the gumby quotes. a while back i listened to a 6 hour long interview with robert anton wilson where he talks about korzybski & general semantics so i gave it a shot. it's an abridged version of a 900 page book & i definitely plan on reading the full work at some point, it's wild. if you’re interested in language, consciousness, the gap between words & meaning, and/or hacking your brain i would recommend it. he repeats himself a lot but that's a side effect of his pedagogy, the goal of which is the eventual re-wiring of your entire nervous system in order to achieve a more rational worldview/healthier reactions to things. (so repetition via words/sounds/actions is necessary 2 engage the organism-as-a-whole.) the most important takeaway for me is that everything & everyone you interact with is a completely unique object, and this necessarily extends to temporality-- Bob in 1999 is NOT the same person as Bob in 2010, and treating them as though they were is a harmful mistake. interestingly enough, im taking a class with J.F. martel (weird studies podcast, author of "reclaiming art in the age of artifice") & last night he said what amounts to exactly the same thing, except he was arguing for like, a soft animism (i-thou vs. i- it) & korzybski was arguing for a more "rational" & secular world. so fascinating.

4- What’s the next book you’re hoping to read? i just got "speech play: research & resources for the study of linguistic creativity" in the mail so probably that. i'm on a childlore kick rn & this is like... horizontally related 5- Is there a book you own, but aren’t planning on reading?

around 2 years ago i was walking home after a show high on E & i ran into a guy i had met at work a couple times. went over to his apartment because MDMA is like, "everything is SO meaningful and SO much fun." i barely remember our conversation but he ended up being like "you would like this book, here take it, i have 3 copies." so i now own a copy of "the eater of darkness" by robert m coates. i still haven't read it. the moral of this story is [???]

6- What was your favorite series as a kid? Would you still read it now? so many of you asked this question :P

THE TRUTH: i was obsessed with lotr from age 8 to 13 with a level of dedication that i've never known since. yes, i would still read it now. i reread the silmarillion last year & it was naturally a way more rewarding experience than when i was a kid! 8- Fantasy or sci-fi? i like & have read a lot of older sf/f (le guin asimov pkd etc etc) but im not actively into either nowadays. i read whatever reaches me from the queer sf/f twitter pipeline (like whatever's on wizards vs lesbians) but otherwise dont pay much attention. so the answer is "idk!!!”

12- Have you ever read a celebrity memoir? If so, whose was it? the only memoir i've read in recent years has been "memories, dreams, reflections" so if jung counts as a celebrity, there you go 14- Fiction or non-fiction? non-fiction in both quantity of books owned & what i prefer reading. i almost view them as 2 separate activities bc the motivation for & experience of reading them are so wildly different 15- Favorite fiction genre? i know i said im not "actively into" sci fi but 16- Favorite non-fiction genre? "philosophy" i guess. i also really love any phenomenological/experience-based studies of paranormal stuff, like "the terror that comes in the night" by david hufford or anything by jacques vallée. basically books that both a) take strange experiences seriously & b) examine/catalogue them scientifically (to whatever degree).

when i read “time loops” it felt like everything i had ever read (& will ever read future tense) was for the sole purpose of understanding it. “time loops” picks up where J.W. dunne's 1927 "an experiment with time" left off. i won't say too much more about it but everyone should read it. it's so smart & engaging & will totally blow your miiiind, maaaan speaking of "an experiment with time," in 1964 a guy named vladimir nabokov began an experiment of his own following the directions dunne laid out in his book. dunne encouraged readers to write down their dreams in order to test the theory that a later event could generate an earlier dream.

nabokov’s experiment with dreams & time strongly influenced “ada or ardor: a family chronicle” which happens to be my favorite novel. i first read it when i was 18, and i've reread it 3 times since then (with the help of ada online, my beloved http://www.ada.auckland.ac.nz/ ) i would not recommend this book to anyone who doesn’t already like nabokov & know what he’s about. it’s fucked up & self indulgent & i love it so much
