I've never been more grateful for the ability to enjoy and to keep reading things without understanding them, honed through years of reading mysteries and serialised fiction out of order, because goddamn these books really expect you to trudge on with partial information for a really. long. time. and trust that at some point you'll get to understand what is happening

He deserves cuddles. To feel so at peace that he just falls asleep on his friends. They’re too scared to move in fear of waking him- the same way most are when a cat falls asleep in their lap. Do you think he’d snore? I do, but very lightly.

OKAY I've been thinking about this so much recently, because I've been trying to figure out how much physical touch and affection I think he would tolerate and enjoy (so I can write him better according to my interpretation and style)

On the one hand, the immediate argument might be that he hates getting close to people. He's bristly in canon and is known to push back, and he doesn't trust easily, which may indicate a distaste for anyone getting up close and personal. He doesn't want anyone that close

But! On the other hand, a big thing for Tam is that aforementioned trust, and he's not always bristly. he has no problem putting people back in their place and questioning things, but he's not rude to the people he cares about. Once he trusts people, his challenges become more for amusement, he teases people a lot--case in point: teasing Sophie over Keefe throughout Lodestar, and poking fun at their awkwardness and implications (like with Dex).

And, to tie it back in specifically to touch, he's shown no problem being physically affectionate with Linh. Evidence: after he, Fitz, and Sophie were taken he wraps his arm around her as she buries her face in his shoulder. Granted, they're not touching often, but there's no hesitation or discomfort shown from Tam. instead, there's comfort offered

SO it stands to reason that while he is a prickly character and distrustful, meaning he doesn't like people close to him for trust reasons, there will be a few exceptions made for those he's especially close with. it's an external barrier, but like his sharp tongue, it's one that can be lowered once someone's earned that clearance with him. he's therefore, in this interpretation, not a universally touch averse character but it's instead all tied to trust

WHICH is especially relevant in my musings because trust is also an essential part of Fitz's character (though I won't get into it here). And I was having all these musings to figure out whether it would work with Tam's character to have them cuddle. And my conclusion is, if I've got a strongly established trust between them then yes. I can make them cuddle in character.

And I got sidetracked but yes, I think Tam lightly snoring is very possible. either that or he sleeps like stone--doesn't move or make noise at all, to the point everyone gets nervous and checks to make sure he's still breathing :)

Someone just liked this post and I'm here to share that I opened it to see what the fuck this ask was and my first thought was "why would someone ask me this" and then I had to take a step back and remember that I literally have cats named after narnia characters 😭😭😭

Every otaku producer on any at least decently-sized project is chained to very BIG MONEY merch contracts. Merch sales are one of the biggest cogs making the anime industry run and because of that, merch manufacturers expect producers not to allow anything that would make their products fail to reflect the contents of the show.

A recent example that sparked controversy about this is the new Tokyo Mew Mew reboot anime. Mew Mew is a series where pretty much everyone important has food names, but the early scanlators failed to notice how far this motif extended and rendered Quiche's name as Kisshu. This is spread in the fandom enough to make merch makers assume that was the proper way to spell his name in English and produce pins with the name Kisshu written in Roman letters. Thanks to that, over a decade later, the Mew Mew translator on Crunchyroll subs is forced to use Kisshu on her script despite knowing it's wrong.

But this is a Type-Moon post, so let's talk about Type-Moon instead. On October 29th, 2010, Nasu released Fate/complete material III, containing profiles for all Servants featured in Fate/stay Night. In his lack of English knowledge, he most likely relied on Google to learn how to romanize all those names. This generated two curious results: Arthuria was rendered as Altria, as the first search result for アルトリア would be the cigarette corporation, and Rider favored the French spelling Medousa over the English Medusa.

Flash forward to May 25th, 2016. At this year, Fate/Grand Order had already been released and proved itself a commercial success against all odds. In celebration of that, FuRyu Corporation sculpted the source of all evil.

FuRyu's figure utilized the erroneous "Altria" from Complete Material III. Here is where I want you to notice that FuRyu did not release a Medusa figure alongside it. "Altria Pendragon" is the only character in this collection.

Our next chronological stop is August 14, 2016. Merely 3 months after the FuRyu Altria figure began to spread its corruption through all we know and love. That's the day Fate/Grand Order Material I came out, containing profiles for Saber Arthuria and Medusa.

As you can see in the right corner, Medousa is no more. Due to having 6 more years to learn things and no merch contract forever chaining him to his spelling mistake, Nasu had the opportunity to correct Medusa's name, which also settled it as the name FGO NA legally had to go with.

So when I say FGO NA translators went with Tam Lin because it's literally illegal not to do so, I am talking about

Presenting the results of my latest hyperfixation

Tam Lin is a Scottish folktale, usually presented in ballad form, dating back to at least the 16th Century. It has been summarized and re-told by different people over the years, including Overly Sarcastic Productions. It is the subject of a one-act opera, and was the inspiration for a 1970 movie that updated the story to the present day.

The fairy queen yells at Tam Lin in every version analyzed except for the Anais Mitchell version. Her version is an outlier in many respects, since the entire parade is left out, Janet simply grabs hold of Tam Lin mid-conversation.

Another oddity is Pentangle's version, which was written for the movie and consists of a jumble of images meant to complement scenes from the film, without a coherent narrative.

The biggest surprise to me is how few versions mention Janet seeking an abortion, something that I had always thought of as a central part of the story.

One thing I wish I could have looked at in more depth is the balance between versions that describe Tam Lin's transformations before he goes through them, and versions that describe them as they happen. As they happen is more common, but some songs will do the entire sequence twice.

Going into this, I had two versions prominent in my mind: Anais Mitchell's pop-folk version that leaves out much of the story, and Anne Briggs' very traditional (and very long) version. Because of this, I thought perhaps we would see a decrease in the complexity of the story over the years, but that's not the case, it's basically flat. I think a better comparison might be to separate into traditional and revised versions, although that is something of a judgment call.

There were so many minor discrepancies I couldn't even keep track of them all, but these four stood out because they are so oddly specific. Even the main character's name and the setting aren't consistent across versions, if they're even mentioned at all. Some versions don't even give the main character a name!

My data collection process leaves a lot to be desired, as well as the way in which I decided which events were major or minor, and which things to leave out altogether. This was mainly just a fun way to explore different versions of my favorite folktale, listen to a lot of different people sing different versions of the ballad, and rotate the whole thing in my brain.
