Agree except at least in Canada the proper response to homelessness is ***telling the government to get the f out of the way because they are constantly stalling and stopping houses in general from being built which is making the housing market skyrocket and also making people pay blackbook value when they buy used cars and also not allowing people to use trailers and rvs that THEY OWN on their own property (you can only use trailers on campgrounds and in trailer parks) and getting rid of the taxes on the food which is a freaking necessity so people can actually afford their groceries and also maybe giving people a designated space to actually have tent cities instead of allowing them to just pitch tent anywhere and also stop paying municipalities per head so they are no longer incentivized to keep people homeless and also make it legal for people to give handouts to the homeless and and and
For goodness sake, we need to stop trusting the government to fix the problems it made in the first place. At some point we just gotta pick up our bootstraps and do it ourselves
listen. There's a whole mentality shift that needs to happen culture wide here, from the schools to the public infrastructure to pet ownership to the justice system
The proper response to your dog doing a natural behavior you dislike (digging/barking/protecting etc) it to give them an appropriate time and place to engage in that behavior
The proper response to skateboarders damaging infrastructure is to build more and better skate parks, or build skate elements into the public infrastructure on purpose.
The proper response to homeless people sleeping on park benches is to build them houses.
you see how there's like, a commonality at play here?
The proper response to a disruption is to address the root of the disruption directly, not somehow attack the disruption itself -
you don't invent a muffler by swinging a bat at the engine noise, you don't relieve your hunger by punching yourself in the stomach, you don't resolve public unrest by sending armed men to control them and you don't prevent homeless people using bus shelters a roof by removing the bus shelters.
a whole ass shift in a basic mindset, i'm tellin' you. We need it.

British Columbia has a provincial election in a few weeks, and I can already tell many of you are checking out, but bear with me here, cause I think this is kinda funny. Electing a premier is actually pretty important, given how power is configured in Canada’s version of federalism. We don’t have the separation of powers, per se, but rather a system of responsible government where provincial and federal powers work together and keep one another accountable, in theory. That being said, our Constitution has laid out what is under federal jurisdiction and what is provincial. Provincial governments are in charge of pretty crucial things like education and healthcare, so a lot is on the ballot.
The election is on October 19th, with some advanced polling and mail-in options. You cannot vote online.
There are a lot of political parties in BC, but only a few with any real chance. For a while, we had a contest between the BC United Party (who rebranded from the BC Liberals since they were fairly unpopular and trying to distance themselves from the even less popular federal Liberals), the BC NDP (New Democratic Party, the farthest left we have with any kind of clout, and who have been in charge for the past seven years), and the BC Conservative Party (they’re conservative but not cartoonishly so). Note that these are all separate entities from the federal parties of the same name.
With the knowledge that the election is on October 19th, it was a huge and unprecedented surprise on August 28th when Kevin Falcon, the leader of BC United, announced that he was dropping out of the election and backing the Conservatives, which was such a sudden announcement that some of those in his party found out from Twitter. This has never happened so close to election time, so now it’s a contest between the Conservatives and NDP.
The NDP had to scramble to adjust some of their campaign material, and it hasn’t gone smoothly. They have their ads yelling about John Rustad, the Conservative leader, as expected, but they were anticipating a three-way contest. With BC United currently licking whatever is stuck to the bottom of Rustad’s shoe, the NDP has had to shift focus. One of their ads was clearly meant to target the former Liberals, with talks of tons of healthcare cuts in the last twenty years. Now the ad is discussing “Conservative healthcare cuts”, trying to conflate Rustad, who was once part of the Liberals, with those cuts. Sure. But the Conservatives haven’t been in power here since the 1950s. So it’s an interesting tactic.
All this to say that it’s been a bit of a shitshow, despite how tame it seems to our friends down south. We’re having huge issues with housing and grocery prices, the healthcare system is incredibly strained, and Canadians are shockingly hostile to our politicians. Like. All of them. Constantly. There’s quite a bit at stake.
So what do our parties want to do? The NDP have had a hard time trying to fix our economy since the pandemic, and inflation and rising costs of living are stretching everyone pretty thin. Their policies are easing things, but it’s slow, and not everyone is seeing results right away. They want to regulate things, increase the number of healthcare workers, make it harder for corporations to buy residential real estate, and they are! It’s just slow.
The Conservatives want to privatize everything. They think having private healthcare will lower wait times at public clinics and lessen the strain on the system. More likely a lot of primary care providers and nurses will jump ship and go private, but hey, I’m not a politician or economist or lawyer or a fucking conservative, so what do I know.
All this to say that it’s very important to vote if you’re eligible to in BC. Get registered. You legally have time to vote on election day as well. Your employer can’t stop you.
And keep an eye on whatever the fuck is going on federally.

I'm a season ticket holder for the PWHL, the women's pro hockey league. Today was the first home game for my team, the Minnesota Frost, since things started to get ugly between the U.S. and Canada. The recent men's 4 Nations Face-Off has been all over the news, not only because Canada won after a lot of trash talk from the USA, but because of what happened with the national anthems.
Over the past few weeks, there's been a growing trend of Canadian audiences booing the American anthem at men's hockey games. I honestly can't say I blame them. The Trump administration has been absolutely horrible to our neighbors up north. Economic threats, blatant disrespect to their leaders, talk of flat-out taking over their country... This is no way to treat a nation that's been a friend to us for generations. We're such siblings that our sports teams play against each other in the same leagues, for God's sake. Canadians have plenty of reason to be angry at us, or at least, at the concept of our government as represented by our flag and anthem. In fact, one of the few things that gives me hope in this world is that our horrendous example might save Canada from following its own right-wing extremists.
What concerns me is that during the 4 Nations Face-Off, Americans started booing the Canadian anthem in retaliation. Make no mistake here. WE are the aggressors. Canada never did anything to us. We SHOULD be ashamed of how our country is treating them. We have no right to pound our chests and grandstand in their direction. They are standing up against a hostile foreign power, and as someone who actually understands what America was supposed to be, I am PROUD of them for that.
Now we come to today's women's game. I'm uncomfortable hearing our anthem these days for my own reasons, but now the entire thing was making me nervous. Was my fan community also the type to boo the Canadian anthem? The PWHL was founded on inclusivity and equal opportunity. I would hope that the people who support it would share values more similar to mine. Or would the dark side of my fellow Americans seep into this space, too?
I went prepared to speak up if anyone disrespected Canada's anthem, but I hoped with all my heart that I wouldn't have to.
Today's anthems were prerecorded instrumentals. No vocals. The PWHL has ALWAYS had live performers to sing the anthem. Always, at every game I've been to over its two seasons. Not today. I suspect they were also prepared for the worst, and didn't want a real person to have to bear the brunt of whatever might happen.
The Canada anthem was first. I braced myself... and there came only silence. Everyone stood quietly through the song, the silence only broken by a few people here and there singing the anthem themselves. More people than the Canadians who had made the trip to support their team. I saw and heard several Americans who knew the lyrics adding their voices in support. There wasn't a single negative sound.
I haven't had anything bring a genuine warm smile to my face like that in weeks.
The icing on the cake is that the PWHL was also celebrating Black History Month today, with a special logo and ceremonial puck drop, plus videos and demonstrations by hockey organizations that uplift young players of color. With our government leaning so heavily into white supremacy, it was refreshing to see the PWHL not using Black History Month as a token gimmick, but actually putting in effort to bring meaning and real representation to the ice.
There is still human decency out there, in this increasingly ugly age. I'm relieved to know the PWHL and its fan base have principles that are more than just surface decoration.

@graylok my reading is that he can vote in Canadian elections, but not US ones as he isn't a citizen here.
Considering how many times the X-Men have fought the government, it's kind of astounding that nobody ever tried to get their heavy deported before opening overt hostilities. Shows the difference between the banal evil of real governments and the flamboyant villainy of fictional ones, I suppose.
Anyway, yeah. I read it as an "everyone forgets Wolverine is Canadian" joke.

It was a warm evening this past July when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau shared a drink with the world’s most powerful intelligence network.
Spy chiefs from the Five Eyes nations had come to a secure resort in coastal Nova Scotia for an informal evening after intense talks in nearby Ottawa.
Trudeau, who’d spent part of the day pledging to fix a “death trap” highway in the Atlantic province, dropped in on the gathering to share some thoughts about geopolitical threats.
When he left, as the lobster dinner was being served, the conversation returned to a debate that began well before this annual meeting and would run long after it: should the agencies go public with their concerns about China?
In the months that followed that July 17 dinner, an unprecedented campaign has been waged by those present – Australia, the US, Canada, New Zealand and the UK – to block Chinese tech giant Huawei from supplying equipment for their next-generation wireless networks.
This increasingly muscular posture towards Beijing culminated in last week’s arrest of Huawei’s chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, in Vancouver, over alleged breaches of US sanctions with Iran. Meng, the daughter of the Huawei’s founder Ren Zhengfei, was granted bail on Wednesday ahead of efforts to extradite her to the US.
As the spy bosses sat down to savour Nova Scotia’s famous lobster that evening with a glass of local wine, their recent clash with Russia was seen as a template for the power of working collectively. The British delegation led by MI6 boss Alex Younger – a man who signs official documents in green ink with a single letter “C” – had detailed evidence of the brazen attacks in Salisbury, where Moscow had used a military-grade chemical weapon on UK soil.
In the aftermath the British went public and the Five Eyes coordinated the largest ever expulsion of Russian intelligence officers from NATO and partner states. All agreed this would significantly degrade Russia’s intelligence capability.
That episode reminded everyone that espionage and foreign interference continues to be a pervasive threat. Some believed since 9/11 that mission had been obscured by the fight against terrorism and so at their own pace each had concluded the greatest emerging threat was China’s Communist Party.
They also knew that to contend with this challenge there was no other group of nations that enjoyed such shared knowledge, cultural affinity and technical expertise.
Not all agreed to speak publicly about China when they returned home, but all were determined to act. And the Five Eyes network would include allies like Japan and Germany in the conversation.
This coming in from the cold was viewed as a countermeasure to China and its many proxies, who have long argued fears over its rising power and influence were a fiction, or worse still, signs of xenophobia.
Since that July meeting there has been a series of rare public speeches by intelligence chiefs and a coordinated effort on banning Huawei from 5G networks. It began with one of Malcolm Turnbull’s last acts as Prime Minister.
The Sunday before he was deposed Turnbull rang the US President Donald Trump to tell him of Australia’s decision to exclude Huawei and China’s second largest telecommunications equipment maker ZTE from the 5G rollout.
Australia’s statement on the rules it would apply to building next-generation wireless networks was released on August 23 and largely lost in the leadership maelstrom.
Huawei was not named but it ruled out equipment being supplied by “vendors who are likely to be subject to extrajudicial directions from a foreign government”.
Mike Burgess put Huawei back on the national agenda when on October 29 he became the first Director-General of the Australian Signals Directorate to make a public speech in the organisation’s 70 year history.
Listening attentively from the head table that night was the Director-General of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation Duncan Lewis and his counterpart at the Australian Secret Intelligence Service, Paul Symon.
All three men were at the meetings in Canada. Again, Burgess never named Huawei or ZTE but said the stakes with 5G “could not be higher” as it “will underpin the communications that Australians rely on every day.”
The man who runs an agency that unlocks electronic secrets had a poacher’s view of the threat: “Offence informs defence and defence informs offence. Or to put it another way, to catch a thief, you will need to think like one (or perhaps, be one).”
Since then he has given a TV interview and opened a Twitter account with a lively first post; “Hi internet, ASD here. Long time listener, first time caller.”
Burgess has even dabbled in some light trolling of Huawei. On November 21 when a Huawei executive boasted of successfully separating the core and access parts of a 5G network in New Zealand he tagged the ASD boss on his post.
To the surprise of most Burgess replied; “Thanks for sharing. In my business I’ve never seen anything “fully isolated...”.
Seven days later New Zealand banned Huawei from supplying 5G equipment to mobile phone company Spark.
Then on December 6, the head of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, David Vigneault, who had hosted the annual Five Eyes gathering, used his first ever public speech to warn of an emerging threat.
“CSIS has seen a trend of state-sponsored espionage in fields that are crucial to Canada’s ability to build and sustain a prosperous, knowledge-based economy,” he said.
“I’m talking about areas such as AI [artificial intelligence], quantum technology, 5G, biopharma and clean tech. In other words, the foundation of Canada’s future growth.”
No one was in any doubt he was talking about China. A formal ban on Huawei and ZTE from Ottawa is expected within weeks.
A day after the Canadian spy boss spoke, the head of MI6 was on his feet at his old Scottish university, St Andrews.
In a speech described as “rare” he warned that “much of the evolving state threat is about our opponents’ increasingly innovative exploitation of modern technology”.
The United Kingdom posed a particular problem for the Five Eyes as, 15 years earlier, British Telecom had struck a partnership with Huawei and that example was routinely used to counter arguments it posed a threat.
In answer to a question Younger took direct aim at Britain’s Huawei problem.
“We need to decide the extent to which we are going to be comfortable with Chinese ownership of these technologies and these platforms in an environment where some of our allies have taken a very definite position,” he said.
On the same day the BT Group announced it was stripping Huawei's equipment out of the core of its existing 3G and 4G mobile operations and would not use its technology in the 5G network.
But no country has been more aggressive than the United States, represented at the Canadian meetings by Gina Haspel.
The newly appointed director of the Central Intelligence Agency was battle hardened by a life spent in the shadows. She shed some light on that in a bruising Senate confirmation hearing in May saying she had “excelled in finding and acquiring secret information that I obtained in brush passes, dead drops, or in meetings in dusty alleys of third world capitals.”
Well before her arrival at the helm of the CIA, the US has been focused on Beijing and the proceedings against Huawei’s Meng are just one front in its efforts to bring China to heel.
Washington’s sharp focus on Beijing plays into Trump’s obsession with trade wars but it would be wrong to think it’s solely driven by the President. Over the past two years Republicans and Democrats in Congress and the Departments of Defence, State and the security agencies have come to the conclusion China is a strategic threat.
US prosecutors have filed charges against Chinese hackers and, in an audacious sting in April, American agents lured Chinese Ministry of State Security deputy director Yanjun Xu to Belgium, where he was arrested for orchestrating the theft of military secrets.
There is also speculation further indictments are imminent over a concerted Chinese hacking campaign known as “Operation Cloud Hopper”, which is believed to have penetrated networks across the globe, including Australia.
In addition the White House used its bi-annual report on China, last month to say Beijing had "fundamentally" failed to change its behaviour around cyber espionage giving it unfair access to intellectual property, trade secrets, negotiating positions and the internal communications of business.
The report added weight to revelations in The Age and Sydney Morning Herald the same week that China had diverted internet traffic heading to Sydney and its peak security agency had overseen a surge in attacks on Australian companies.
This industrial scale cyber theft is just part of a form guide which convinced the Five Eyes intelligence chiefs that Beijing would not hesitate to recruit Huawei to its cause and the company would have no choice but to comply.
All the evidence before the spy bosses at the dinner in Canada pointed to a rising superpower mounting the most comprehensive campaign of espionage and foreign interference that any had witnessed.
The Party was aggressively exporting a worldview that was hostile to democracy and actively sought to undermine it.
A new Great Game was afoot and the West had been slow to act. But it is acting now.

Getting To Know The North Koreans
Notice to readers. So that I may take my annual sabbatical in the Canadian wilderness, the next several reports will be pre-written.  They will focus on the history of how I got involved in fighting the Khazarian Mafia.  Hopefully, this will help readers get a better understanding of what is happening now. Of course, if something really big happens, we will issue an emergency report.
The assassination attempts against me and the murder of many of my colleagues were part of a Nazi coup d’etat that took place in the U.S. after 9.11.2001.  This Nazi faction, led by Fuhrer George Bush Sr., was a sub-group of the Khazarian Mafia.  They were killing journalists as a part of an attempt to control the narrative, the story by which Western society was led.  However, I did not figure that out until a North Korean princess showed me the evidence.
Here is how it happened.  I was running into serious censorship at Forbes.  This started after I had run the story about the murder of the banker, that I detailed in last week’s report, brought me to the attention of the people who gave orders to the Forbes family.
For example, a story about Citibank (a Rockefeller company) being kicked out of Japan because it was money laundering for gangsters was killed even though my source was the Japanese Finance Ministry speaking on the record.  The last straw for me came when I found out that an anti-virus software company was making viruses.  Forbes killed the story, telling me I was “unreliable,” when in fact the story was killed because Steve Forbes had been given $500,000 by the anti-virus company, according to a Forbes whistleblower.
In any case, I was sick of writing business pornography and decided my next career move was to shift to writing books.  The hope was to have them made into Hollywood movies.  So, I sent two chapters and an outline of a planned book to my agent in the U.S.  The book would have described a systematic pattern of the murder of politicians, journalists, industrialists, etc. by politicians and gangsters who were part of the corrupt secret government that really ran Japan.
The day after I sent the book proposal, I got a call from Kaoru Nakamaru, who said she was a princess and a first cousin of Emperor Hirohito.  She told me it would be a bad idea to publish the book.  Obviously she was connected to people who were reading my mail, so I decided to meet her.  When I asked her how she knew what was in my book proposal she said, “A Goddess told me.”  (That Goddess would be Amaterasu the reigning deity of the Japanese security police).
When I met Nakamaru she said, “You understand all about the corruption in Japan but you know nothing about the real source, which is in the West.”  She then gave me a 9.11 truth video.  At the time, I thought “Oh my God, this is one of those anti-Semitic movies about 9.11 that I read about in the New York Times.”  I had no intention of watching it but she kept pestering me until I did.  That was the real red pill for me.  It did not take a lot of fact-checking to realize 9.11 was an inside job.  From a missile hitting the Pentagon without breaking the second-floor windows and leaving no plane debris, to a BBC reporter with Building #7 visible in the background saying it had already collapsed, 20 minutes before it actually did at freefall speed, the evidence was undeniable.
The real problem was wrapping my mind around how incredibly large a group would be needed to carry out a campaign like this.  The implications were truly mind-boggling.  It was only by looking at historical events that I realized such false flags were being commonly used as excuses to start wars.
For example, the sinking of the “innocent passenger vessel” Lusitania in 1914 was used as an excuse to demonize the Germans and get the Americans to join the British in World War I.  It was not until a hundred years later in 2014 that the British admitted publicly the Lusitania was transporting arms and was, therefore, a legitimate military target.  Historians note that ads in newspapers warned passengers prior to the ship being sent into the vicinity of German U-boats as a sacrifice.
In 2001, the people who controlled the U.S. were using 9.11 as an excuse to invade the Middle East (yet again).
In my still naïve worldview I figured that if people found out the truth, there would be a revolution.  After I published front-page articles for major Japanese magazines listing evidence that 9.11 was an inside job, I held a press conference at the Foreign Correspondent’s Club of Japan to present the evidence to the international media.
It was only when none of them (with a few minor exceptions like rural Australian newspapers) reported the evidence did I realize that freedom of the press had been extinguished from the Western media.
Nobody at the FCCJ or in the Western press debated me or presented evidence showing I was wrong.  Instead, all sorts of people I never knew suddenly started a systematic campaign of character assassination against me.  The general story was that I was taking drugs, believed in UFOs, and had lost my mind.  I was put on a black list and nobody in the English language press would work with me.  Many editors told me they had been ordered by their bosses not to publish my stories.
Fortunately, I had published books in Japanese that sold well and provided me with an income.  I was also introduced to a Japanese author by the name of Ohta Ryu.  He explained to me that he had been approached by a group of Japanese who had studied Western power structures before and during World War II.  He used the material they had provided to publish his books.
What Ohta said was mind-boggling at the time.  It was talking about how the West had a secret government run by families like the Rothschilds and the Rockefellers.  This may be common knowledge now but, at the time (around 2005-6) when I did an internet search about the Rothschilds, I found exactly one sentence about them on the entire web.  It was from an Israeli chat room where one participant mentioned a rumor that the Rothschilds were involved in the formation of Israel.
As far as our reputed overlord David Rockefeller was concerned, he was number 300 or so on the Forbes richest list and considered to be a person of the past.  I had to go back to the 1918 edition of Forbes to find out the real story.  It turns out John Rockefeller the first had suddenly become poor overnight by donating all of his fortune (around $300 billion in today’s money) to a foundation.  Once the money was in a foundation, the owners did not pay inheritance tax and did not have to disclose much information.
A paper trail led to over 200 foundations controlled by the Rockefellers that in turn controlled most of the Fortune 500 companies.
What I started to realize was that all the murders of Japanese politicians etc. were part of a Rockefeller & Co. hostile take-over of Japan Inc.  One key man they used to carry out this operation was Heizo Takenaka, who was the Finance and Economy Minister from 2002-2005.  While he was in this job, he dismantled the system of cross-shareholding where banks and companies owned each others’ shares.  Takenaka forced all the banks to sell off their shares in Japan’s listed companies to foreign funds such as Vanguard, Blackrock, and State Street & Banking.  When I confronted him about handing over all of Japan’s listed companies to the Rockefellers etc., he squirmed visibly in his chair and was evasive.
However, the day after the interview, I got a phone call from an official at the Japan development bank who told me there was someone Heizo Takenaka wanted me to meet.  So, I went to a downtown Tokyo hotel room where I met a person by the name of Shiramine who called himself a Ninja.
I recorded with his permission a conversation in which he offered me the job of Finance Minister of Japan as long as I went along with a plan to kill 90% of humanity.  He said it was necessary in order to “save the environment.”  Since war did not kill enough people the plan was to use disease and starvation to kill everyone off, he said.  Shiramine added that if I refused the offer I would be killed.
To his credit when Shiramine met me and gave me this proposal, he also handed me a tape and told me to listen to it somewhere private.  In this tape, he said the problem was the “elders of Zion.”  I was also told by another Takenaka envoy that he handed over control of all the country’s corporations because Japan had been “threatened with an earthquake machine.”
The next day another person called me and said he wanted to meet me.  Again, the meeting took place inside a downtown hotel room.  This time it was someone from an Asian secret society known as The Red and The Green.  He said they had 8 million members including 200,000 assassins who could help.  This group also knew about the plan to kill 90% of humanity because they had secretly recorded a meeting at the Bohemian Grove where they discussed all of this.
Members of this group had long worked with Western secret societies, for example by supplying them with heroin from the golden triangle.  However, it was the attempt to kill them off with SARS, a bio-weapon designed to kill Asians, that finally put them on a war footing.
You can imagine my shock and disorientation in running into all of this over the space of just a week.  As someone who had lived his whole life in the official open world as seen in the public record, this was mind-boggling, to say the least.  In any case, since I could not agree with a plan to kill 90% of humanity, I decided to go along with the Asian secret society.
At first, being a peace-loving journalist, I thought of ideas like maybe the Asian secret society could show 9.11 truth movies in Chinatown movie theaters.  However, eventually, I had what I call my “Kill Bill” moment.  In the movie Kill Bill, there is a scene where a female assassin (played by Uma Thurman) is in a desperate fight for her life with a one-eyed opponent.  When Thurman plucks out her opponent’s eye, suddenly the fight is over.
What I realized was that most Westerners (like me) had no idea what their secret leaders were up to and would be appalled if they found out.  The flaw of the secret Western government was that it was highly centralized.  So, I advised the Asian secret society to “pluck out the eye.”  I gave them a list of all the people who were members of the Bilderberg, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the Trilateral Commission.  I said if you target them, you can stop the planned genocide.
Later when the earthquake machine threat was made directly to me I responded that “you can’t stop assassinations with an earthquake machine.”
The other thing I suggested to the Asian Secret Society was that buying U.S. government bonds was worse than buying opium. “At least opium gives you pleasure but now you are paying them to kill you,” is what I told a top adviser to the Chinese Politburo.
In any case, the Asian Secret Society became mobilized.  They threatened to kill the Western elite and also stopped buying U.S. government bonds.  Thus the attempt to kill off 90% of humanity was stalled.  This was the real background to the so-called “Lehman shock,” financial crisis of 2008, and the birth of the Obama administration.
However, the secret war had only begun.  A lot of new players emerged from the shadows following these events.
Next week I will talk about how I met David Rockefeller.  I will also discuss meeting such groups as the Black Sun, the Illuminati (in two flavors), the secret space program Nazis, the Russian FSB, and former MI6 head Dr. Michael Van de Meer.
Please stay tuned…

Severe Drought Threatens Hoover Dam Reservoir – and Water For US West
The wellspring of Lake Mead created by the dam’s blocking of the Colorado River has plummeted to an historic low as states in the west face hefty cuts in their water supplies
— By Oliver Milman at Hoover Dam | Tuesday, 13 July 2021 | Guardian USA
Had the formidable white arc of the Hoover dam never held back the Colorado River, the US west would probably have no Los Angeles or Las Vegas as we know them today. No sprawling food bowl of wheat, alfalfa and corn. No dreams of relocating to live in a tamed desert. The river, and dam, made the west; now the climate crisis threatens to break it.
The situation here is emblematic of a planet slowly, inexorably overheating. And the catastrophic consequences of the extreme weather this brings.
Lake Mead: largest US reservoir falls to historic low amid devastating drought
Hoover dam is the height of a 60-story building and is 45ft thick at the top and 660ft at the bottom. Its construction, in the teeth of the Great Depression, was a source of such national pride that thousands of people journeyed through the hostile desert to witness the arrival of what has become an enduring monument to collective effort for the public good.
The engineering might of Hoover dam undoubtably reshaped America’s story, harnessing a raucous river to help carve huge cities and vast fields of crops into unforgiving terrain. But the wellspring of Lake Mead, created by the dam’s blocking of the Colorado River and with the capacity to hold enough water to cover the entire state of Connecticut 10ft deep, has now plummeted to an historic low. The states of the west, primarily Arizona and Nevada, now face hefty cuts in their water supplies amid a two-decade drought fiercer than anything seen in a millennium.
“We bent nature to suit our own needs,” said Brad Udall, a climate and water expert at Colorado State University. “And now nature is going to bend us.”
Surveying the dam’s sloping face from its curved parapet, Michael Bernardo, river operations manager at the US Bureau of Reclamation, admits the scarcity of water is out of bounds with historical norms. While there is no “average” year on the Colorado River, Bernardo and his colleagues were always able to estimate its flow within a certain range.
But since 2000, scientists say the river’s flow has dwindled by 20% compared to the previous century’s average. This year is the second driest on record, with the flow into Lake Mead just a quarter of what would be considered normal.
1984 Boundary of Lake Mead as Compared to Its Current State

“These are scenarios that aren’t necessarily where we expect to be in our models,” said Bernardo, whose work helps deliver a reliable level of water to thirsty western states. Nearly 40 million people, including dozens of tribes, depend on the river’s water. “We’re getting those years that are at the extreme ends of the bell curve. We’ve seen extremes we haven’t seen before, we now have scenarios that are very, very dry.”
In June, the level of Lake Mead plunged below 1,075ft, a point that will trigger, for the first time, federally mandated cuts in water allocations next year. The Bureau of Reclamation (the government agency originally tasked with “reclaiming” this arid place for a new utopia of farmland and a booming western population), expects this historic low to spiral further, dropping to about 1,048ft by the end of 2022, a shallowness unprecedented since Lake Mead started filling up in the 1930s following Hoover dam’s completion. This will provoke a second, harsher, round of cuts.
“We’ve known this point will arrive because we’ve continued to use more water than the river provides for years,” said Kathryn Sorensen, a water policy expert at Arizona State University. “Things look pretty grim. Humans have always been good at moving water around but right now everyone will need to do what it takes to prevent the system from crashing.”
Seven states – California, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico and Nevada – and Mexico are bound by agreements that parcel out the river’s water but those considered “junior” partners in this arrangement will be hit first.
Should second tier cuts occur, Arizona will lose nearly a fifth of the water it gets from the Colorado River. Nevada’s first-round cut of 21,000 acre-ft (an acre-ft is an acre of water, one foot deep) is smaller, but its share is already diminutive due to an archaic allotment drawn up a century ago when the state was sparsely populated.
The latest era of cooperation between states that rely upon the Colorado River has now entered the “realm of lose-lose”, according to Colby Pellegrino, deputy general manager of resources for the Southern Nevada Water Authority. “Everyone’s going to have to do more with less, and that’s really going to be challenging for people,” she said. “‘Drought’ suggests to a lot of people something temporary we have to respond to, but this could permanently be the type of flows we see.”
The decline of Lake Mead is apparent even at a cursory glance. The US’s largest reservoir is now barely a third full, the dark basalt rock of its canyon walls blanched by a distinctive white calcium ring where the water level once was. This level has plunged by about 130ft in the past 20 years and is currently receding by about a foot a week as farms hit their peak irrigation period.

The pace of change has been jarring to the millions of people who regularly boat, fish and swim on the lake, with the National Park Service recently laying down new steel platforms to extend launch ramps that no longer reach the water. Some marinas have been wrenched from their moorings and moved because they have been left marooned in baking sediment.
Seen from above in time lapse over the years, Lake Mead looks like a spindly puddle withering away in the Mojave Desert, as nearby Las Vegas, which gets almost all of its water from the lake and went a record 240 days last year without rain, balloons in size. The west’s ambitions have crunched into the searing reality of the Anthropocene.
The Colorado River rises in the lofty Rocky Mountains, before tumbling through 1,450 miles of mountains, canyons and deserts until it reaches the Sea of Cortez in Mexico. Seasonally melting snow has traditionally replenished the river but snowpack on mountaintops in the west has declined by an average of 19% since the 1950s, while soaring temperatures have dried out soils and caused more water to evaporate.
This morphing climate, plus the rampant extraction of water for everything from golf courses in Phoenix to vegetables growing in California to gardens in Denver, means the Colorado fizzles out in dry riverbed before it even reaches its Mexican delta.
Only 1.8% of the west is not in some level of drought, with California, Arizona and New Mexico all experiencing their lowest rainfalls on record over the previous 12 months. Lakes in Arizona are now so low they can’t be used to fight the fires themselves spurred by drought, while the retreat of Lake Folsom in California uncovered the wreckage of a plane that crashed 56 years ago. The governor of Utah has resorted to asking people to pray for rain.

The heat has been otherworldly, with Phoenix recently enduring a record six straight days above 115F (46.1C). A “heat dome” that settled over the usually mild Pacific north-west pushed temperatures to reach a record 108F (42.2C) in Seattle and caused power lines to melt and roads to buckle in Portland. A few hundred miles north, a fast-moving wildfire incinerated the town of Lytton in British Columbia the day after it set a Canadian temperature record of 121F (49.4C). Barely into summer, hundreds of people have already died from the heat along the west coast.
The west has gone through periods like this “megadrought” , with only occasional respite, for the past two decades. But scientists have made clear the current conditions would be virtually impossible without human-caused climate change, pointing to a longer-term “aridification” of the region. All of the water conservation efforts that have kept shortages at bay until now risk being surpassed by the rising heat.
“The amount of water now available across the US west is well below that of any time in modern civilization,” said Park Williams, a hydroclimatologist at Columbia University. Research by Williams and colleagues last year analyzed tree rings to discover the current dry period is rivaled only by a spell in the late 1500s in a history of drought that reaches back to around 800, with the climate crisis doubling the severity of the modern-day drought.
“As the globe warms up, the west will dry out,” said Williams. “The past two years have been shocking to me, I never thought I would see downtown LA reach 111F as it’s so close to the ocean, but we have some of the driest conditions in 1,200 years so the dice are loaded for more heatwaves and fires. This could be the tip of the iceberg, we may well see much longer, tougher droughts.”
In the guts of the Hoover dam, down bronze-clad elevators and through terrazzo corridors, a line of enormous turbines help funnel water out downstream, creating hydro-power electricity for more than 1m households in the process. Five of the 17 turbines, each weighing the same as seven blue whales, have been replaced in recent years with new fittings more suited to operating in lower lake levels.
Even with these adaptions, however, the decline of Lake Mead has caused the amount of hydro power generated by the dam to drop by around 25%. The drought is expected to cause the hydro facility at Lake Oroville, California, to completely shut down, prompting a warning from the United States Energy Association that a “megadrought-induced electricity shortage could be catastrophic, affecting everything from food production to industrial manufacturing”. The association added that such a scenario could even force people to move east, in what it called a “reverse Dust Bowl exodus”.
Bernardo said a similar shutdown of the Hoover dam would require more than 100ft in further water level retreat, which is not anticipated, although he finds himself constantly hoping for the rains that would ease the tightening shortages.
“We all want the nice weather but we need those good storms to build everything back up,” he said.
“We’d need three or four above average years, back to back, to restore the lake. Your guess is as good as mine whether we’ll get that. I’ll continue to watch the weather, every day.”

here we go
As of Friday evening, special prosecutor Robert Mueller has officially filed the first charges in the Trump-Russia investigation.
Tumblr media
Quick civics refresher: a prosecutor can get an indictment if a grand jury thinks it’s more likely than not that a specific individual has broken the law.
So here’s what you may be wondering about this one:
WHO: The indictment has been sealed, so we won’t know until Monday at the earliest. We don’t even know if it’s one person or several people. You can get into the parlor game of who’s been told to expect charges, who’s confessed to solicitation on Twitter, who got themselves kicked off Twitter after a yoogely entertaining meltdown, whatever. Pretty much the only person in Trump world we can rule out is Trump himself, since it’s unclear whether he can be charged while in office. We’ll know when we know.
IDGAF WHICH ONE OF THEM IT IS! LOCK THEM UP! LOCK THEM UP!: I know, right?
WHAT: The indictment has been sealed, so we won’t know until Monday at the earliest. All we know for sure is the scope of Mueller’s investigation, which is crimes related to the Russian sabotage of the 2016 election or any crimes his office comes across during that investigation. It could be espionage or it could be tax evasion. The most likely prediction seems to be that it’ll be one of the more clear-cut cases against someone they think they can flip. We’ll know when we know.
WHY NOW?: It doesn’t feel this way because Trump time is like dog years, but in terms of large, complex criminal investigations, Mueller’s is moving at warp speed. For historical context, the only thing we can even remotely compare this to is the Watergate investigation, where the special prosecutor was on the job for ten months before bringing charges against anyone – and compared to this, Watergate really was just a third-rate burglary. Think of how long it would take you to work through what we know publicly about this case. The office is working as fast as they can without screwing it up and now’s the time they think they can prove at least one case beyond a reasonable doubt.
WHY IS IT SEALED?: This is one of those things that probably sounds more dramatic than it is. It’s not uncommon for defendants to get the chance to turn themselves in before the charges are announced publicly, or for law enforcement to want time to plan an arrest that won’t turn into a circus without tipping off, say, a wealthy defendant with connections abroad in time to flee the country. Most dramatically and least likely – though at this point we have to get used to thinking of this stuff as a possibility – they might need to make arrangements to put a potential informant into protective custody.
DID WE GET HIM? IS IT OVER?!: Sorry, no. This is, at best, the end of Act I. The tipping point may be coming soon, but a lot can happen between now and “soon.” You need to prepare yourself, because things can get darker fast. Someone a whole lot more even-keeled than Trump would panic with the walls closing in like this. Keep an eye on activist groups like MoveOn and Indivisible in case we need to mobilize quickly against an even more authoritarian turn. Firing Mueller, pardoning everyone around him, a show trial of Hillary Clinton, war with freaking Belgium – assume we’re going to have to put up a fight against something serious any day now.
The regime did so much desperate covfefe-flinging last week that it looks as if they had some sense this was coming soon, but even before this news dropped, there were quite a few developments that they seem to have been trying to drown out over the past few days:
The CEO of Cambridge Analytica contacted Wikileaks to try and get them to make the stolen DNC emails easier to search, months after everyone knew that Russia was behind the hacks. To be clear: the head of a Trump campaign data contractor reached out to a known agent of the hostile foreign power which was trying to undermine American democracy and said “here’s how you can sabotage our election more effectively.”
Remember Junior’s “Russia – Clinton – private and confidential” meeting we found out about over the summer? It turns out the Russian attorney who went to that meeting had talking points which were approved by the Kremlin. That means she was acting as an agent of the Russian government when she spoke to Junior, Kushner, and Manafort in Trump Tower.
The administration is nearly a month behind in implementing the sanctions we placed on Russia for interfering in the election, but Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is eliminating the committee that is supposed to be implementing those sanctions.
Right before the indictment(s) came down, Assistant US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Dana Boente announced his resignation, after apparently being asked to leave. This is probably not coincidental and feels… kind of ominous. The EDVA hears a lot of national security cases, which means that Boente is up on (for example) the case against former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. This year, Boente has also served as Acting Attorney General and Acting Deputy Attorney General, which means he’s seen a lot of the Trump catastrophe up close.
Trump’s personal attorney apparently sold several NYC apartments for millions of dollars over market value. Cash.
Nevertheless, Republicans in Congress have gone full Inquisition along with the White House, announcing several investigations into a grandma in Westchester County. Right-wing media is, naturally, participating with their usual rabid glee.
This is 100% garbage and none of it deserves the time it took me to write out, or the time you’re going to put into reading it, but you can’t look out for the disinformation if you don’t know what buttons they’re trying to push with it. So I want to emphasize: there is no coherent thread here because they don’t need or expect you to believe any of their deflections. They just need to scream and yell and point fingers until a critical mass of people give up and say everyone’s corrupt nothing matters.
Republican and Democratic donors paid for the research behind the Steele dossier and the House intelligence committee is ON IT. The specific donors were identified earlier last week. Fusion GPS was initially hired by the conservative website Washington Free Beacon, which in turn is largely funded by Paul Singer, a wealthy Marco Rubio backer. Once Trump got the nomination, Republicans lost interest in trying to stop someone they damn well knew was a threat to the republic, so the law firm of the DNC and Clinton campaign picked up the tab. Trump is trying to make this into a thing, but this is not a thing. All campaigns pay for opposition research; the only way this was unusual was that there was so much outlandish dirt on Trump for opposition researchers to find. This did not stop the Free Beacon itself from screeching the Trump party line the day it was reported that the DNC had paid for the dossier.
There’s an investigation into the investigation of HER EMAILS. There is no similar investigation into the Trump White House’s current use of private email systems.
There’s another investigation into a conspiracy theory which was debunked years ago when it was first put out by Nazi wife-beater Steve Bannon’s propaganda machine. It is….*heavy sigh* that in return for a donation made by one Russian national to the world-class charity Clinton Foundation back in the year 2000, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton personally and unilaterally made nine different government agencies sign off on a 2010 sale of interests in a Canadian uranium company to Russia. It really is as stupid as it sounds. The point is just to shove enough crap in your face that you assume there’s something ominous you’re not seeing. The reasons they’ve brought back this specific garbage seem to be: 1) as a way to work “Clinton” and “Russia” into the same sentence (NO PUPPET! NO PUPPET! SHE’S THE PUPPET!) and 2) there appears to be some tenuous connection to Mueller, who was the FBI director at the time, and who they are now furiously attempting to discredit.
The storylines themselves are ridiculous, but the fact that they’re being spun is anything but. This week, Trump personally pushed the Department of Justice to lift a gag order on an FBI informant to testify about a case which was connected with a trucking company which was connected with the uranium sale. The White House is absolutely not supposed to pressure the DOJ in specific cases.
THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HOW YOU FEEEEEEEL ABOUT HILLARY CLINTON. Save that shit for your therapist. This is the full coordinated power of the executive and legislative branches of the federal government mobilizing against a private citizen, apparently for the sole reason that “LOCK HER UP” grievance politics are the one thing the Pepes still think Trump will deliver. THIS IS STRAIGHT AUTHORITARIANISM. WE CANNOT LET IT WORK.
Also? The Russia investigation is the existential threat to Trump and everyone who’s thrown in with him – which is why they’ve focused on it so frantically – but there’s a lot of bad news they’re drowning out. Puerto Rico is still experiencing a humanitarian disaster, and what little recovery effort is happening is being exploited by Trump cronies. Immigration agents are terrorizing kids who need to see a doctor. Republicans in Congress want to slash taxes on the wealthy and are still trying to sabotage Obamacare. And oh, a bad Republican story which (so far) doesn’t appear to be directly related to Trump: Georgia was sued over potential security failures during a special election earlier this year, and the government responded by wiping the data. As you watch this unfold, remember: Trump is the most pressing symptom of the civic rot perpetrated by Republican party and his ties to Russia are his his biggest liability, but neither they nor he is the underlying disease.

essays on engagement —kayla 01
1. The first time she meets Erin is right before her first deployment. She’s never really had a reason to stay but something in the way the girl looks at her is enough to make Kayla never want to leave. She’s smart, a doctor-to-be, and Kayla entertains her with talk of medicine she’s learnt from her father. There’s more than the two of them at the party but that doesn’t seem to have any baring on either of them. Erin’s funny too, and Kayla’s young and hopeful and she’s never been a sap before but she still gives Erin her dog tag before they part ways. She writes her letters whenever she can, and Erin writes back with pictures of her and for the first time, Kayla feels like there’s something to come home to.
They’ve only met once before but when Erin picks her up from the airport when she gets back she’s throwing her up into her arms and kissing her for dear life with the hopes that maybe she’ll forget some of the things she’s seen. And she knows if she has it her way she’s never letting her go.
2. Kayla’s first deployment overseas has her shaking in her boots. She’s twenty years old, the Taliban offensive in Afghanistan is at its peak, and Canadian soldiers are being targeted more than ever. The Conservative Government has extended its war mission by another two years and American armed forces are ready to deploy alongside Canadian forces to drive back the Talibans, and Kayla’s in the front lines. She’s been training for this for two years now, and her gun’s as much a part of her as her limbs, but her first kill doesn’t come easy.
Armed forces move to clear the city of Chardara, and Kayla comes faces to face with her first hostile. Despite her yelling in Pashto to drop the weapon, she’s faced with the muzzle of a gun pointed in her direction and she doesn’t hesitate to pull the trigger. Me or them. Me or them. She’s trained for this for two years, but this isn’t silhouettes or target practice. She’s not shooting at mannequins, or sand bags, and the sand on the ground is stained red.
When she goes to bed that night, or tries to at least, she replays it in her head and stares at her hands in the candle light. Me or them, who’s coming home at the end of the day? Me. Me. Me.
3. Kayla hates these lavish charity parties. The people are fake, the food is too expensive and not filling enough, and all it’s good for is making rich people feel good about themselves for throwing their moneys at charities. And sure, it’s generous, but it’s pretentious when they don’t even care. Still, she’s going back in a few weeks so she can enjoy the lavish lifestyle for one night given the hell she’s about to walk back into.
At least Erin’s having a good time. She loves these things, excelled in the socialite upbringing her parents gave her a lot better than Kayla did. Kayla pulls at her dress, champagne glass in her right hand and she stares across the venue hall. Watches her beautiful girlfriend entertain the guests, smile, laugh, be happier than Kayla’s seen her in a while.
She doesn’t know why she feels uncomfortable all of a sudden. It’s the dread of telling Erin her plans, but something else too. Kayla tries to convince herself it has nothing to do with how gorgeous Erin’s current guest is, and nothing to do with how much she wishes she could make her girl laugh like that again. But that fails miserably when the guest puts a hand on Erin’s elbow and throws her head back to laugh. Kayla downs her drink and leaves.
Later that night when they’re going to bed, Kayla ignores the feeling of disgust in her stomach, ignores Erin’s needy drunk touches, and ignores the fact that she knows if she keeps leaving, Erin’s going to find somebody else.
4. The drawers are empty when Kayla gets back. She’s signed, it’s done. One more tour, just one more. The house is eerily calm, like a storm is about to break out. And it does. “I can’t do this anymore, Kayla,” she hears from the girl on the couch. Her girl, the girl she… the girl who has her heart and somehow that’s never been enough to keep Kayla grounded.
She’s heard this before, but somehow this time it means more. Somehow she hears the finality in her tone and Kayla tosses the keys onto the entrance table of the apartment, makes her way towards the living room couch and falls to her knees in front of her girl.
“Erin…” she starts, watches as the girl in front of her crumbles and shakes her head. “I can’t watch you leave again, I can’t. When’s it going to be enough? When am I going to be enough?” her lover says. It’s spiteful, and hateful, and heartbroken. “This one’s the last, I promise, I promise,” Kayla says, but she doesn’t believe it, not really. Erin laughs through her tears, harsh and quick like it kills her to hear this.
“You’re so full of shit,” she finally says, standing up and pushing Kayla away. She grabs her bag and Kayla’s on her feet, hand grabbing onto the bag as well. “Please,” she breathes, voice wavering. Kayla doesn’t cry, but she’s damn close to doing it this time. “I… I lo….” Erin freezes, but Kayla can’t get the words out. She can’t say it. Not because it isn’t true, but because she knows if she says it she’ll have to stay. And maybe it’s better this way, maybe it’s better if Erin gets out while she can, before she’s stuck with Kayla for the rest of her life and hell, that isn’t wished on anyone.
“You can’t say it, can you.” Erin states, ripping the bag out of her hands. “Two fucking years and you can’t even tell me you love me.” Kayla’s hand falls to her side and her eyes meet the ground. “I’m done, Kayla. I can’t live this life anymore where all I do is wait for you. Wait for you to leave. Wait for you to come back. Wait for you to pour your goddamn heart out for me. I can’t wait. Because I know I love you. But I can’t keep loving you when you keep leaving me.”
Erin doesn’t slam the door when she leaves, but Kayla hears it clear as day echoing in the emptiness of her apartment. She walks into her bedroom, ignores the pictures on the wall, ignores the empty drawers, and walks straight to her closet. Her uniform is still crisps as she pulls it out and starts packing her bag. One more tour.
5. The atmosphere of the bar reminds her of the early 1900s war movie era, and for a second Kayla imagines herself as a World War 1 pilot. She’s grinning like an idiot, anything is better then remembering where she actually is and she closes her eyes. There’s the loud buzzing of the plane engine in her head, and the room’s spinning like propellers, and maybe, just maybe, she should have stopped drinking by now.
But Jack’s still drinking, and she’s gotta keep up with her partner, watch his Six, make sure nothing happens to him. “Jack,” she says over the sound of plane engine, which is really just the buzzing of conversation, “we have to land the plane.” Jack looks at her quizzically, and then starts laughing before finishing his drink. “Alright Lieutenant Tetford, that’s enough drinks for you.”
“It’s Captain,” she corrects him, “I don’t wear these stripes for nothing you know.” He laughs again, “You’re not even wearing your str-” “-They’re hypothetical stripes, asshole.” He raises his hands in surrender and pushes a glass of water in her direction. “Drink up, Captain.” Kayla obliges him before making eye contact with a girl across the bar.
“She’s totally into me,” Jack says and Kayla’s smile drops as she looks at him. “No she’s definitely starring at me.” They bicker for a while and finally Jack gets up and saunters over to the girl. He comes back only moments later and sits down across from her, a sour look on his face. “So?” she asks. “She wants your number…” he grumbles under his breath. Kayla’s still laughing as she makes her way over to the girl across the bar.
6. The girl’s a fighter pilot for the French Air Force; Astrid. If Jack didn’t have any luck with her its because his french is rusty and she doesn’t speak english very well. Kayla speaks with her in French, tells her that her name means beautiful goddess and that it fits. Astrid blushes and Kayla smiles, she’s still drunk but it’s off of something else entirely now.
The next morning, she wakes up alone and naked and sore. She remembers something about Astrid leaving for additionally training today and smiles to herself as she remembers the details of the night before. It’s not much happiness, but she’ll take it in this stupid war.
7. The air is disgustingly dry in Ghazni. So dry that Kayla can’t even muster up sweat anymore, and she should, given the amount of gear she’s wearing. They’re just passing through, the city is a hot spot for Taliban activity and Kayla’s team isn’t going to be here much longer than they should be, just in case. They’ll break for lunch, and then they’ll carry on.
Kids are no stranger to Kayla and her team, so she’s not surprised when a few of them join them in the wreckage of a mosque. Their light armoured vehicles are parked outside, Jack and Keith are on guard duty, and Kayla befriends the little girl of the group who has eyes so familiar that Kayla can’t help but see herself in them. She offers her crackers and water, and speaks in Pashto. The girl is shy, but she’s warms up to her. And Kayla warms up right back.
So when she hears the whistling sound of a bomb dropping, Kayla doesn’t hesitate to wrap her arms around the girl protectively. The blast happens just outside and sends her (and her team) flying forward. And she holds on tight. Her ears are ringing as she opens her eyes. The girl in her arm is crying but Kayla can’t hear it. She looks around as the dust settles, pushes herself up but keeps the girl close into her chest. And then the noise hits her. Coughing, yelling, is everyone alright?
“Tedfort!” Kayla snaps into gear, puts the girl down at her legs and swinging her automatic rifle in front of her. “Command base from Charlie Four,” she speaks into her radio. “Send your traffic, Charlie Four.” Kayla lays it like it is, calls for air support as machine gun fire breaks out. And the little girl just stays near Kayla. Her team’s up and she’s never been more relieved to see Jack. I thought you were dead.
Another IED explodes nearby and Kayla knows they need to clear the building. “Move move move!” She orders, and then repeats herself so the kids can understand. Her team cover fires and Kayla lifts the little girl with one arm and takes her service pistol out with the other. They cross the street, hunker themselves down in a nearby building and Kayla tries to tell the civilians to stay the fuck down.
Where’s the damn bird? “Foxtrot one-six is coming in the area, weapons hot”. There’s a click and then she hears the ricochetting of airplane fire. The little girl is clutching her leg as Kayla exchanges fire with the hostiles. “And Alpha Ten is coming 10-3, charlie four what’s your 20?” So Kayla lights a flare and jumps the wall, leaves the little girl behind before signalling towards the plane as everything rings around her. “Roger that Charlie Four. Hang tight.”
Fifteen minutes later, when hostile fire ceases and quiet surrounds them. Kayla looks at the little girl and hugs her tight, tells her how brave she was. And knowing she saves her keeps her from feeling like shit about the other three civilians dead, and Keith’s missing limb.
8. She’s been back two weeks, and already she feels like suffocating. Her mom has been on her case, not even proud of Kayla’s promotion, and hellbent on assuring that Kayla has a future outside of the military. She doesn’t know what else to expect from her Human Rights Lawyer of a mother. Hell she probably loathes that Kayla took part in a war that’s inherently flawed. The gala is in full swing, and Kayla would have loved to have avoided it, but given that it’s in her house she doesn’t have much of a choice.
And so she drinks, and drinks, and drinks. She’s known she’s been off for a while now, hasn’t felt right since the ambush in Kendahar, and she can tell she’s slowly loosing her mind. But that doesn’t stop her from drinking, and detesting the very existence of this party. It doesn’t help that Erin’s here, and Kayla’s heart hurts in longing.
“Kayla honey, why don’t you slow down,” her mother says through clenched teeth before pulling her by the hand as she downs another glass of expensive champagne. “You said I had to be here, you didn’t say I had to be sober,” she replies numbly.
“This is not who your father and I raised you to be.” And Kayla doubles back, eyes wide and hand snapping of her mothers grasp. “I’m sorry… raised me?” She laughs disbelievingly and looks away. “That’s….” A deep breath in and another forced laugh, “That’s funny because that’s not how I remember it.”
Kayla swallows, her mouth is dry and yeah… she probably shouldn’t have drank this much. The sound of someone tapping on a microphone breaks her out of her slight haze and then the mic screeches and Kayla’s head explodes with memories. She stumbles back, hands rubbing at her eyes, and bumps into someone. I can’t see, she thinks. It’s too dark, and the tear gas stings too much. And then it’s just flash bang after flash bang. Jack grabs onto her arm, her mouth is salty and dry and she can taste the sand. “Kayla,” he yells at her, “Kayla just breathe. Kayla.” She’s trying to listen to him but she can’t control her body.
“Kayla, Kayla darling.” She opens her eyes. The party, she’s still at the party. And everyone’s looking at her, her and the waiter who’s tray of expensive bubbly she’s knocked over. Her mother’s staring at her like she doesn’t recognize who she is anymore. But Kayla doesn’t have an answer to give her, except that maybe she’s never known who she is. Her eyes meet Erin’s from across the banquet hall and Kayla feels nausea hit her full force. Because Erin looks afraid of her and that’s gotta sting more than anything.
“I’m sorry,” she mumbles before leaving, pushing and elbowing past people to get outside and get some air. Her mother doesn’t stop her, and Kayla reasons that’s because she never cared.
9. Kayla’s not a rough person. But tonight, tonight she’s pissed off and the other girl’s back hitting the wall echoes with a clap of thunder. She wants to turn her mind off and focus on the girl she has trapped with her body but it’s hard when she feels like she’s navigating a field of land mines. Her hands are shaking and her kisses are bruising, and when lightning strikes she can see the other girl’s eyes blown wide in fearful arousal. So Kayla pulls back, runs a shaking thumb along the girl’s lips. She doesn’t remember her name, but Kayla can’t even think about her own name.
“It’s okay,” she murmurs, “you’re safe.” At this point she can’t tell who she’s talking to and Kayla slows it down, kisses her softer, wills herself to come back to reality. Their shirts come off and Kayla’s breathless as she meets her for another kiss. The girl wraps her arms around Kayla’s neck and Kayla’s chest shakes. Breathe. Thunder claps again and Kayla closes her eyes tight, hands bruising on the other girl’s hips.
Between the other girl begging her to take her and the absolute need for distraction, Kayla’s pulled the other girl’s pants down and her right hand’s working wonders on covering the sound of thunder with something else. The lightning flashes still remind her of mortars, but Kayla works the other girl to a different sort of explosion and somehow that’s enough to ground her for a bit.
The storm fades and Kayla becomes softer, lets the tiredness of keeping her demons at bay show and the other girl, Aisha, takes over in mending what the last six years has done to her.

Marijuana Smoking Increases Risk Of COPD For Tobacco Smokers
COPD is characterized by diseased lungs and narrowed airways and is associated with high mortality. The researchers defined smokers as people who reported smoking at least 365 cigarettes in their lifetime, and a history of marijuana smoking as self-reporting of any previous smoking. Dr.
Tumblr media
Wan Tan of the University of British Columbia and St. Paul's Hospital and coauthors. The researchers were limited by lack of data on the potential variations in marijuana potency, on differences in inhalation and the number of smokers who combine both substances in the same cigarette. Apart from any fair dealing for the purpose of private study or research, no part may be reproduced without the written permission. The content is provided for information purposes only.
A lot of news happened in 2018. We're looking back at some of the biggest stories from the last 12 months. Also, we hope you have a great year ahead. Legal marijuana is about to become a reality in Canada. The move could prove to be a sea change for local economies, policing efforts, governments, schools, workplaces — you name it. But what about the U.S. What should Canadians know if they're crossing over after marijuana is legalized? To answer this question, HuffPost Canada reached out to Len Saunders, an attorney based in Blaine, Wash. U.S. over marijuana-related issues. The federal government has made it abundantly clear that even though pot will be legal in Canada on Oct. 17, it is absolutely, totally, 100 per cent not allowed to be taken out of the country.
Even if you accidentally forgot some in your car, Saunders says, officers could slap you with a hefty fine and a lifetime ban from the U.S. You can't bring pot back from the U.S., either, even if you're coming back from a state that has legalized it like Washington State or Colorado. This also applies to medical marijuana. If for some reason you do have cannabis with you or in your car — please don't do this — while entering Canada or the U.S., declare it to the Canada Border Services Agency. Right now, the only border states with Canada that have legalized pot for recreational use are Washington State, Alaska, Vermont and Maine.
Saunders says it's likely that border officers at these crossings will be more keen to ask travellers about their pot use or involvement in cannabis. But once pot is legal everywhere in Canada, he noted, guards at every single border crossing could become extra vigilant. Saunders said he expects a "tidal wave" of cases of Canadians getting barred over marijuana related issues. The federal government says the U.S. Stevie O'Brien, chief of staff to Border Security Minister Bill Blair, told HuffPost Canada that U.S. So, what constitutes a "reason" to be suspicious? Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale told CTV in June.
You can still be banned from the U.S. You read that right. Just admitting to having used marijuana in the past could get you a lifetime ban from the U.S., Saunders said. Even though some states have legalized it for recreational use, cannabis is still illegal in the eyes of the U.S. The Canadian government's messaging on this so far is that travellers going south should always tell the truth if they're asked about their pot use. But Saunders called that "dangerous" advice, since it can result in a lifetime ban that will require the traveller to use a waiver every time they want to enter the U.S. — and that costs a lot of time and a lot of money. Saunders said he regularly advises people to refrain from answering questions about pot use at the border. Not answering the question might get you turned away, he said, but it at least helps you avoid being barred from the U.S., not to mention the torturously expensive and complicated process required to get a permit waiving the ban. Saunders says officers might reject your entry and turn you back, but you won't be barred.
As of October 17, 2018, the purchase, use and possession of recreational cannabis has been legalized across Canada with regulations varying by province. As a result, the province of Ontario has created rules about how, where and who can buy, possess and consume cannabis in the province. These rules are similar to those in place for alcohol and tobacco, with some differences. You have to be 19 or older to buy, use or possess recreational cannabis, and you are only able to use it in a private residence. Just as it is illegal to drive alcohol impaired, it is illegal to drive drug-impaired. Until April 2019, the only way to legally purchase cannabis in the province of Ontario is from the Ontario Cannabis Store website. All products are delivered by Canada Post and an adult 19 years of age or older must be present and provide legal photo identification in order to sign for the package.
Canada needs to crack down on a certain type of short selling because a growing number of bad apples are abusing the system for everyone, market watchers say. Short selling is an investment strategy that allows people to make money when they think the price of a stock is about to decline. A conventional investor makes money by buying a stock he or she thinks is undervalued, and then waits for the price to improve before selling it for a profit. But a short seller makes money when a stock price declines. They do that by borrowing a stock owned by someone else, selling it to collect the money, and then replacing the borrowed stock by buying it off someone else once the price has dropped. It's a controversial strategy with plenty of detractors.
But even critics acknowledge it can provide a valuable service to everyone in the market by rooting out fraud. In recent years, Canadian companies such as Sino-Forest, Shopify, Valeant, Home Capital and many others have found themselves targeted by short sellers, with the shorts having various degrees of impact in each of those cases. Short sellers who expose the truth about misdeeds by companies may provide a valuable service. Short selling becomes abusive, and problematic for the market, when a small minority of investors bend the truth to make money through panic. Walied Soliman, the global chair of law firm Norton Rose Fulbright Canada. This type of market manipulation seems to be on the rise in Canada.
Soliman said that the way securities laws are set up give an unfair advantage to abusive short sellers because companies and investors who buy companies on the way up have to play by a much different rule book. Anyone buying up a large enough chunk of a company has to disclose that to regulators. Their public statements are closely scrutinized, and their future buying and selling is bound by myriad rules. Executives at companies have to choose their words carefully when talking to the media, for fear of letting news slip that investors and regulators didn't hear about first. That's not true for short sellers. They can largely operate in secret until they choose to go public.
Soliman said. He suggests implementing disclosure rules for shorts as a reasonable first step to addressing the problem. European Union rules mandate that short sellers must tell regulators when their position is as small as 0.2 per cent of a company, and let the public know when they top 0.5 per cent. Soliman said he would like to see a crackdown on a type of abusive short selling that almost always originates on social media and stock message boards, by people putting out research designed to start a panic. Soliman declined to name specific individuals or firms involved in the negative practice, citing confidentiality. Mastromattei said abusive shorts take advantage of that. He cites the ongoing saga of cannabis company Aphria Inc. as a good example.
In December, the company was rocked by accusations by a short seller that the firm wasted hundreds of millions on foreign acquisitions that are essentially worthless. The stock lost more than 50 per cent of its value in the three days that followed. While it has since recovered, a hostile takeover offer has emerged for the company, and investors are pursuing a class action lawsuit against the business over how it handled some of its dealings. The Aphria saga is ongoing. While the truth of the matter is yet to emerge, Mastromattei said it's a great example of how lax rules leave Canada open to abuse. The CBC reached out to the Ontario Securities Commission to ask whether the regulator is contemplating changes to their short selling rules. The agency referred us to the Canadian Securities Administrators, an umbrella organization that represents 13 provincial regulators across the country. Until any changes happen, companies will remain fearful about finding themselves on the wrong side of a short campaign because of the damage that unfair ones can create.

Remember when people didn’t vote in part because of an active propaganda campaign by a hostile power to make people in swing jurisdictions feel like voting wasn’t going to matter...
Russia’s up to shit again. It is in their interest if President Orange Terror continues to have the power to send your country down the porcelain pisshole.
And to some degree, you’re not wrong: Yes, you’re fighting an uphill battle in the next US election. The system is set up for you to fail.  We were fighting one here in Canada in 2015, where the system is literally set up so the biggest minority wins (the whole point was to frustrate the will of the majority, if you read the early writings of those setting up the system), and our government was actively engaging in voter suppression (with ID laws, “phone bombs” - i.e., mass calling of confirmed non-supporters on election day to make it difficult to get out the door -  challenging of voter registrations, scare tactics, and misleading robocalls and targeted online ads, where voters were directed to the wrong polling station) and preventing existing government institutions from doing their job in countering these activities (they de-funded and revoked the authority of Elections Canada to advertise to Canadians about our rights and about the correct polling station information). We were set up to fail. We won anyway. We won by getting out the vote in such numbers and with such strategic vision that it overwhelmed their attempts to suppress us. Did we win the best outcome? No. But what we did achieve was the ouster of a government actively hostile to gender, race, and religious equality. And that was a big win. I’d argue it was the best outcome that was possible. And we achieved it by energizing the vote, and drowning the government’s disinformation campaigns in correct information about how and when to vote, how and when to register, helping each other register, giving each other drives to the polling stations, and where appropriate, taking the government to court.
To totally mangle a metaphor, you don’t win an uphill battle by taking your ball and going home. That cedes the fight to the other side, for free. Do you want to hand Trump control of your country for two more years on a silver fucking platter? Cuz that’s how you hand Trump control of your country for two more years on a silver fucking platter. You don’t win anything that way.
You win by digging in and fighting harder than they think you can, slyer than they think you can, longer than they think you will. They don’t have to beat you, they just have to make you frustrated enough to give up, and you’ll beat yourself. So don’t give up.
Look at it this way: Cynicism is cool, but cynicism enables those in power. Cynicism is cowardice in a fad hat. Cynicism keeps people down, keeps them supporting the status quo by default because “it’s not like anything’s gonna change anyway.” It prevents them from seeing that what keeps shit the same is that everyone’s too damn cynical and resigned to the status quo to demand change. Go ahead and be cynical if you want, but do it with the knowledge that cynicism gets fuck-all done.

Never mind the cannabis hype — the real buzz is around AI
It feels like a good week to talk about bubbles.
The temperature in Montreal was close to freezing on Oct. 18, yet the lineup at the Société québécoise du cannabis store on Ste-Catherine Street wrapped around the block for a second consecutive day.
Irrational exuberance? Or a symbol of all the wealth that suppliers will generate? There surely is some degree of excess when factory farms are likened to Amazon and Google just because they grow marijuana instead of tomatoes.
Cryptocurrencies and blockchains were going to change the world in 2017. Now, it looks like those innovations will be used simply to upgrade the plumbing of the existing financial system. Valuations are correcting as a result. Bet you a bitcoin that pot is on a similar path.
This brings us to another technology that definitely will change the world, and also has some bubbly characteristics.
Canada to host G7 conference on artificial intelligence in Montreal in December
Canadian firms fall behind in adoption of artificial intelligence
Revolution AI: Small businesses get smarter with artificial intelligence
If the fun Canadian business story of the moment is cannabis, the serious one is artificial intelligence (AI). When Stephen Poloz, the Bank of Canada governor, devoted a speech to creative destruction last month, he wasn’t thinking about pot. AI will reshape entire industries; tens of thousands of jobs will be taken over by computers, (hopefully) at least as many will be created in the process.
“In the future, AI is going to be as normal and as natural as the electricity in this room right now,” Carolina Bessega, chief scientific officer at Stradigi AI, told me in an interview at the company’s headquarters in Montreal earlier this month. “Nobody is going to talk about it because everyone is going to use it and have it.”
Bessega’s future is coming at us quickly.
Less than five years ago, Stradigi was just another developer of custom software. Then a retail chain asked the company to clean up a very messy inventory system. The job required sorting tens of thousands of items into a single database. It would have taken a human months to do it. So Bessega went to her boss, Basil Bouraropoulos, the chief executive, and said that she might be able to build an AI system that could do the work in a couple of hours. She was right; the gamble worked and the client was happy.
Bouraropoulos, an entrepreneur with a background in coding, refocused his company immediately. “We didn’t go into AI because it was a bubble, because in 2014 the bubble wasn’t there,” he said. “The bubble really started in 2016.”
Like pot, crypto, and blockchain, there’s some froth around AI too. Thousands of tickets for the annual Neural Information Processing Systems conference, which this year will be held in Montreal during the first week of December, apparently sold out in about 10 minutes. Something called the AI-Powered Supply Chains Supercluster, spanning the “Quebec-Windsor corridor,” won a share of the Trudeau government’s $950-million fund to create innovation hubs, enough to convince some of you that AI must be a loser if it needs Ottawa’s help. One of Bouraropoulos’s challenges is convincing clients that Stradigi is legitimate and not party of the hype.
“You see companies just adding ‘AI’ or ‘dot AI.’ I’ve seen it over and over,” he said. “We’ve even had questions from clients, `Are you really an AI company?’ My answer is always, `I’d love to have you visit our offices and see that we really have 30 PhD’s sitting in here’.”
I saw the 30 PhD’s; they exist. They soon will be joined by about a dozen more to help Stradigi keep up with a surge in demand, including a new partnership with Seattle-based Cray Inc., the publicly traded maker of supercomputers that generated (US) $392 million in revenue in 2017. After taking its time, Stradigi is stepping out from under the shadow of Mila, the Montreal-based AI lab founded by Yoshua Bengio, a pioneer of the field.
“They are doing a fantastic job and if you look at their plans for the future, I really see that Canada is going to be the leader in AI,”  Bouraropoulos said. “I am very confident saying that, and I’m very confident that we are going to be a huge part of it as well.”
I’m inclined to believe him, because Bouraropoulos and Bessega were rare executives I’ve talked to this year who didn’t complain about a labour shortage. That’s a serious issue in a lot of industries, but not in AI apparently. If talented scientists are lining up to work for companies such as Stradigi, the industry should be able to grow quickly.
Only a couple of years ago, Canada’s best graduates were rushing to the United States. Now, that migration pattern has reversed. That might surprise those who think Canada’s personal tax rates are too high to compete in tech. The cost of living in places such as San Francisco and New York has become so expensive that Canadian cities such as Montreal and Toronto can compete easily, even if the taxes are higher, said Bouraropoulos.
It also helps that the U.S. has become hostile to immigrants. Canada becomes an easy second choice, especially if it means working in the orbit of world-class researchers such as Bengio.
“For people who are not from the United States, the situation in the United States is not easy,” said Bessega, a native of Venezuela. “That plays in our advantage.”

In my entire adult life, I don’t think I’ve seen anything quite like the Jordan Peterson phenomenon.
In less than two years, the Canadian psychology professor emerged from obscurity to become an international best-selling author with a massive online following. In the process, he’s morphed into a self-help guru of sorts, railing against identity politics and dispensing tough advice to (mostly) young alienated men.
Peterson has stirred up a ton of controversy, particularly on the left. But I find him oddly fascinating, even though I think he gets some important things terribly wrong. For example, he seems to think that because social hierarchies are natural, they must therefore be desirable or just. That’s an old fallacy in the philosophical world, and Peterson appears to commit it regularly.
Nevertheless, compared to most of the gasbags filling up our collective headspace, Peterson is reliably smart and interesting. I’ve tried to interview him twice now, but he has declined both times.
So I reached out to Kate Manne, a professor of philosophy at Cornell University and the author of Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny. Manne recently reviewed Peterson’s book, 12 Rules for Life, and, unlike many Peterson critics, actively engaged with his ideas.
Over the course of our discussion, we talked about what Peterson gets wrong, why his audience is overwhelmingly white, straight, and male, and we analyze some of the, um, strangest passages from his new book.
Manne argues that Peterson’s appeal among young white men has to do with the “undeniable progress that has been made in extending opportunities to a wider range of people,” which leads to more competition in areas “they often expected and sometimes felt entitled to dominate.”
A lightly edited transcript of our conversation follows.
Sean Illing
Peterson has this recurring interest in identifying social hierarchies, which resonates with people who think they’re in danger of losing their privileged position or are resentful about having lost it. This is something you really home in on in your review of his book.
Kate Manne
Yeah. I mean, it’s striking. There’s an interesting moment in the book where Peterson talks about resentment as a “revelatory” emotion that can mean one of two things: One, you feel it because you’re immature, in which case you just need to buck up. Two, you feel resentment because you really are being oppressed or taken advantage of, somehow. Your resentment shows you that something needs to change or that you need to assert yourself in relation to other people.
But there is clearly a third possibility. People often feel resentful because they appear, based on historically entrenched social norms, to be getting a bad bargain, when what’s actually happening is that others are getting a somewhat fairer deal. When you’re accustomed to unjust privilege, equality feels like oppression, as the saying goes.
Sean Illing
What do you think is the biggest mistake — moral, philosophical, or otherwise — that Peterson makes in the book?
Kate Manne
His idea (in chapter six of his book) that what leads to mass shootings in general and school shootings in particular, is a kind of ahistorical, existential angst, or a crisis of Being — that’s the phrase he uses! — about the despair and misery and suffering of human beings.
Peterson thereby takes on a huge burden of explaining why white women, people of color, nonbinary folks, and so on, almost never act on our existential angst and despair in this way.
Because, as you know, the vast majority of school shooters have been white men.
I also think the way Peterson cherry-picked the few more dignified-sounding sentences from the diary of one of the Columbine killers, Eric Harris, was downright dishonest. As I wrote in my review, he failed to mention the fact that the majority of Harris’s diary was a virulently racist, misogynistic, homophobic, and ableist screed.
Harris, like many other mass killers, was obsessed with the very hierarchies whose importance or validity Peterson never really challenges or offers an alternative to.
“When you’re accustomed to unjust privilege, equality feels like oppression, as the saying goes.”
Sean Illing
Peterson has been called a “sexist” and a “misogynist.” To be honest, I’m not sure this is a fair characterization of his work, but I haven’t read his book, and I haven’t listened to all of his lectures. I’m curious what you think.
Kate Manne
As we’ve chatted about before, I draw a theoretical distinction in my own work between sexism and misogyny (though they are often tangled up in practice). Peterson’s book has numerous sections which I would characterize as sexist because they naturalize and rationalize a patriarchal social order.
Sean Illing
Can you cite specific passages as evidence of this?
Kate Manne
Sure. Here’s a passage that conveys what I’m talking about:
Boys are suffering, in the modern world. They are more disobedient—negatively—or more independent—positively—than girls, and they suffer for this, throughout their pre-university educational career. They are less agreeable (agreeableness being a personality trait associated with compassion, empathy and avoidance of conflict) and less susceptible to anxiety and depression, at least after both sexes hit puberty. Boys’ interests tilt towards things; girls’ interests tilt towards people. Strikingly, these differences, strongly influenced by biological factors, are most pronounced in the Scandinavian societies where gender-equality has been pushed hardest: this is the opposite of what would be expected by those who insist, ever more loudly, that gender is a social construct. It isn’t. This isn’t a debate. The data are in.
This is based more on sexist stereotypes than compelling scientific evidence. And even in the gender progressive environment of Scandinavia that Peterson mentions, it’s not as if all sexism and misogyny has been eradicated overnight; many patriarchal norms linger and are sometimes enforced, or whose breakdown has led to backlash.
As a result, there is currently no control group of people raised in a truly nonpatriarchal culture, which is what we’d need to investigate claims that men “naturally” prefer masculine-coded activities, and women “naturally” prefer feminist-coded ones.
I also suspect that, for many of Peterson’s readers, the sexism on display above is one tool among many to make forceful, domineering moves that are typical of misogyny. And I define misogyny as hostility certain women face, because they are women in a man’s world, rather than the hatred men harbor in their hearts toward all or even most women.
Misogyny, to me, is more about policing and controlling women’s behavior. Belittling her intellect or acumen in competitive domains is certainly one way of doing that — especially when backed by the sense that it’s in her womanly nature to be oriented to people rather than abstractions. But that’s a false contrast: You can be both.

I know that Peterson received some criticism recently for endorsing, or appearing to endorse, “enforced monogamy.” To be fair, this is a very particular anthropological term that doesn’t imply that the government is literally forcing people into monogamous relationships, but instead refers to social policies that incentivize monogamy.
What does he actually say about this in the book?
Kate Manne
He said that subsequently, in a New York Times piece, I believe, in response to the point that school shooters are often sexually, romantically, and socially frustrated young men. This suggestion is classic, straight-up misogyny, according to my definition of it.
Peterson has since waffled about what he meant, but I’m mostly interested in how the proposal would naturally be understood by ordinary readers, which leaves little room for charitable interpretation or plausible deniability in this case.
Peterson is very closed-mouthed about the prevalence of domestic violence, marital rape, and intimate partner homicide in the context of the idea of enforced monogamy. So if you’re trying to prevent male violence, enforcing heterosexual monogamy seems a remarkably poor way to go about it — as well as obviously infringing on women’s entitlement to orient themselves toward whatever and whomever they wish (other women, multiple partners, and their own projects and ambitions). Monogamous relationships are just one potentially valid option among many, all of which have risks and rewards, costs and benefits.
Sean Illing
I’ll say this about Peterson: He is far more interesting than most of the gasbags currently occupying our collective headspace. But I also see him morphing into a celebrity-performer as his influence grows. He’s developing a customer base, and that means he risks becoming more of a salesman than an intellectual.
Kate Manne
As far as being more interesting than the average anti-feminist crusader goes, that seems right — but the bar is none too high at the moment. As to the populist quality of his persona, I think that’s already evident in his book. I’ve never read a book preface quite like it. He uses smiling emojis. He talks about how much his agent liked his book proposal. He talked about the percentage of Quora users who viewed and upvoted his answer to the question that inspired the book, and elatedly reports one comment that he had “won at Quora.” [Author’s note: The question was, “What are the most valuable things everyone should know?”]
I mean … okay, but who cares? If he wants to be truly excellent, he should aim to make the best contribution he can, not measure himself by the size of his celebrity. The idea of winning or dominating others as an end in itself is one I tend to find objectionable.
Sean Illing
What do you find most interesting or challenging in Peterson’s ideas? Or what has perplexed you the most about how his ideas have been received?
Kate Manne
Honestly? I think the fact he’s not been called to account for saying some really eyebrow-raising, authoritarian-sounding, and even cruel, things in his book.
Sean Illing
Give me an example.
Kate Manne
One part of the book that I found disturbing was when Peterson responded in his capacity as a psychologist to a particular client. According to Peterson, the client announced, “I think I’ve been raped.” He wrote that he immediately thought that alcohol was involved.
How else to understand “I think”? But that wasn’t the end of the story. She added an extra detail: “Five times.” The first sentence was awful enough, but the second produced something unfathomable. Five times? What could that possibly mean? My client told me that she would go to a bar and have a few drinks. Someone would start to talk with her. She would end up at his place or her place with him. The evening would proceed, inevitably, to its sexual climax. The next day she would wake up, uncertain about what happened—uncertain about her motives, uncertain about his motives, and uncertain about the world.
Miss S, we’ll call her, was vague to the point of non-existence. She was a ghost of a person. She dressed, however, like a professional. She knew how to present herself, for first appearances … Miss S knew nothing about herself. She knew nothing about other individuals. She knew nothing about the world. She was a movie played out of focus. And she was desperately waiting for a story about herself to make it all make sense.
I’d raise an alternative explanation: Maybe she was raped — five times, as she stated — and then was effectively undermined or even gaslit by her therapist. To be clear, I’m not saying that that is what happened. I can’t possibly know, on the basis of what Peterson writes here. But I’d certainly like to know more, and I’m surprised Peterson has not yet been asked about these and similar passages, in which he comes across as highly contemptuous of female clients.
Later, he goes on to say this about the woman:
Who are you? What did you do? What happened? What was the objective truth? There was no way of knowing the objective truth. And there never would be. There was no objective observer, and there never would be. There was no complete and accurate story. Such a thing did not and could not exist. There were, and are, only partial accounts and fragmentary viewpoints.
Funnily and sadly enough, Peterson sounds like a stereotypical postmodernist here — one of his chief intellectual foes. And it doesn’t seem accidental that his skepticism about objective facts arises when it’s conveniently anti-feminist.

The part you are interested in is the LB or Labyrinth, which is what Neruda referred to as the place where those who are not from here worked as well. But careful, NOT all of them are SAMs (Anunnaki), there are other groups as well.” – special technical operators EEOI served with distinction for the a.c.i.o in several types of Allied Special Forces units during the Second World War until now. One such secret unit was the legendary U.S. and Canadian combined 1st Special Service Force or, as it was commonly known, "the Devil's Brigade." for d.b bpdq69666999 It achieved a sterling combat record despite overwhelming odds. While tactics, weapons and technology have changed, today's secret JTF 2 soldiers are perpetuating the basic qualities that define such units. Within the ACIO, there are 14 distinct levels of security clearance. Those who are at level 12 and above are aware of the Corteum/Anunnaki Technology Transfer Program (TTP), and they, according to Dr. Neruda, are about 120 in number, and are primarily in India, Belgium, and the United States. There are only 7 who have level 14 clearance, and they are the Directors of Intelligence, Security, Research, Special Projects, Operations, Information Systems, and Communications. These Directors report to the Executive Director, who is known simply as “Fifteen”, which is the unique classification that is reserved for the head of the ACIO. Fifteen, in the eyes of Dr. Neruda, is the most powerful human on the planet, and what I think he meant by “powerful” is that Fifteen is able to deploy technologies that are well in advance to any that our world’s governments have access to. However, Dr. Neruda portrayed Fifteen and his seven Directors as a benevolent force, not a hostile or controlling force. The eight people who comprise this inner sanctum of the ACIO are in possession of radical technologies that have been part of the Corteum/Anunnaki TTP. However, there were also other extraterrestrial technologies that had been derived from recoveries of spacecraft or other alien artifacts, including various discoveries contained in ancient texts that had never been revealed before. All of this information and technology has been collected and developed within the ACIO scientific core – all of whom possess clearances of level 12 or higher. This scientific core is called the Labyrinth Group, and consists of both men and women who have utilized the Corteum/Anunnaki intelligence accelerator technologies to their advantage, and have created a secret organization within the ACIO. When Dr. Neruda was explaining this to me, it got so complicated that I asked him if he could draw me a visual diagram of how all of these organizations worked. The Labyrinth Group consists of all the personnel within the ACIO that qualify for levels 12, 13, and 14 clearance. Fifteen is the leader of this most secret organization. It was split from the ACIO to enable secrecy from the NSA and lower ranking members of the ACIO, which would facilitate the Labyrinth Group’s agenda to create its own applications of the Corteum/Anunnaki TTP. The Labyrinth Group is in possession of the pure technologies derived from the Corteum/Anunnaki TTP. It takes these technologies and dilutes them to the point where the ACIO or Special Projects Laboratory will sell them to private industry and government agencies, (which includes the military). This secret organization is the most powerful organization on earth in Dr. Neruda’s opinion, but they do not choose to exercise their power in a way that makes them visible. Thus, their power is only discernible to their members. For about 40 years they have accumulated considerable wealth apart from the NSA’s oversight. They have managed to build their own security technologies that prevent detection from intelligence agencies like the CIA or MI5. They are, for all practical purposes, in total control of their agenda – perhaps this is what makes them a unique organization. Dr. Neruda had a clearance of level 12 and was still kept from vital information that only the Director level was aware. And it was assumed that even Fifteen kept vital information from his Directors, though this was never a certainty. The symbol used by the Labyrinth Group is four concentric circles. Each circle representing a clearance level (12, 13, 14, 15), and each circle had a unique insight into the agenda of the Labyrinth Group, and its coordination with the Corteum/Anunnaki. Fifteen was an enigma to everyone within the Labyrinth Group. He had been a physicist before he became the Executive Director of the ACIO. He was a renegade because he never interacted with the protocols and the political environment of academia. He operated outside of the institutions and was selected to be part of the ACIO because of his combination of brainpower, independence, and relative obscurity within scientific circles. He was one of the first to make contact with the Corteum and establish communication with them. The Corteum/Anunnaki essentially appointed Fifteen as their liaison to the ACIO, and Fifteen became the first to utilize the intelligence accelerator technologies that the Corteum/Anunnaki initially offered. These technologies not only enhance cognitive abilities, memory, and higher order thinking skills, but also enhance the consciousness of the individual so that they can utilize the newly gained intelligence in a non-invasive manner. Meaning, they don’t exploit their intelligence for personal gain at the expense of others. This apparent increase in both Fifteen’s IQ and ethical consciousness caused him to create the Labyrinth Group in order to retain the pure-state technologies of the Corteum TTP from the NSA. What technologies are released to the NSA are diluted forms of the pure-state technology, which are significantly less potent in their military and surveillance applications. What I expected to hear from Dr. Neruda was a secret organization of intelligent, evil elitists – individuals intent on exploitation and control. Why else would they want to hide beneath the cloak of such incredible secrecy? The answer, according to Dr. Neruda, was surprising. The Labyrinth Group view themselves as the only group with sufficient intellect and technology to develop a specific form of time travel technology. They are essentially focused on this agenda because they desire to prevent future hostilities that they believe will occur unless this technology is developed. The Corteum is assisting, but despite their considerable intellects, they have been unable to develop this technology. What I’m about to tell you will seem impossible to believe, but again, I’m only reporting what my notes say based on my initial conversations with Dr. Neruda. He explained to me that there are as many as 12 different extraterrestrial races currently involved in the past, present, and future of earth and its destiny. The ACIO, because of its mission with the NSA, is the most knowledgeable group about the various agendas of these 12 alien races. we are the cabincr3w and we hope you enjoy the ride. just make some popcorn. sit down. relax. and enjoy the show. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/304610321279221760/331849208199905280/1033.gif **************************************************************************************************************************** ☬ ☮ ☯ ☬ ☮ ☯ ☬ ☮ ☯ ☬ ☮ ☯ ☬ ☮ ☯ ☬ ☮ ☯ ☬ ☮ ☯ ☬ ☮ ☯ ☬ ☮ ☯ ☬ ☮ ☯ ☬ ☮ ☯ ☬ ☮ ☯ ☬ ☮ ☯ ☬ ☮ ☯ ☬ ☮ ☯ ☬ ☮ ☯ ☬ ☮ ☯ ☬ ☮ ☯ LEVEL NULL V.3. In other words social media encourages individuals to close their minds. The multiple user name / open login project is designed to do this: Firstly we intervene on the General Intellect: by sharing identities we disrupt the surveillance of social media. tagging ourselves as Tae Ateh, Timóteo Pinto, TimóTae Pinteh, Sarah Gulik (or other shared identities) we disrupt the facial recognition algorithms used to identify us. Using a login shared also disrupts the algorithms used to predict and influence behaviour both online and offline. Secondly we manifest as the Human Species Being: by sharing our production we, as workers, become able to empathise more with each other. By sharing identity we can take on each others manners, habits, intimate thoughts and therefore transcend as well as share our own. Thirdly we can identify more with non-human workers — namely the internet and technology that we are using and is being used to use us. Since the 1980s, much has been speculated about on the activity of the Russian command on the globe. Many conspiracies, mysteries and absurd experiences is lurking in the minds of ordinary people. After the Cold War and with the information released by former Russian agent killed by poisoning, brought to light some of the greatest enigmas that the military agencies of the former Soviet Union are included. What is discussed here is on one of the research groups in the field of neuroscience that the Russian government has been developing over the decades. Not sure if the team still keeps developing research in the area, but some signs indicate that there are still some of the old staff fragments. research teams are formed in general by teachers and specialists doctors in any specific area. The government provides funds for the search can be performed. If there is no production promoting is cut. Thus works for any research group. In 1940 a research group led by Professor MOLODKINA began his research in the field of neuroscience about the biochemical behavior when people were exposed front of several scenes that invoke specific feelings such as anxiety, sadness, joy, laughter, sleep, anxiety , anger, hunger, compassion, sexual arousal, etc. Professor Molodkina obtained some interesting results comparing it with the results of Pavlov’s experiment. A decade later Molodkina had a partnership with POLUKAROV, which had obtained The KSTXI Around 1995, a group of Russian scientists relying on experts in the fields of neuroscience, psychology and programming initiated a technical program mentally behavior or induce memory loss through visual codes patterns that stimulate certain regions of the human brain. Recently some of these experiences were observed in the global internet network with exposing some alleged videos that have been made by the team. The theory of mental reprogramming is based on results in developer programming, an expert on cyber defense, Eugene Kaspersky. It is not part of the team, as some have speculated, but his ideas are the basis of some techniques used by KSTXI team. Some reports indicate that during the Cold War, KSTXI was a team of researchers that was part of a nearby agency’s headquarters 401 IAP. This time it is not known what type of research was developed, although there is speculation that the group developed a fuel cell to be incorporated into military satellites. Some of the space technologies would come from this mysterious group. THE EXPERIMENT It was divided into 5 groups of 5 people and were exposed front videos with some kind of emotion involved. These emotions are listed below: Glee Sadness Ache Compassion Will Tranquility Passion Laughter Sleep Sexual Arousal Missing Nostalgia Respect Idolatry Obedience Each group was exposed to pictures and videos that matched the feeling / emotion listed above. Brain activity in people indicated to be associated in the same region when they were exposed before images of joy, for example. Happy people, children running in a park, radiant smiles, etc., stimulated specific regions in the brain. On this information, the scientists exposed the same people before geometric figures and looked to see which regions would stimulate. Some geometric figures, such as a square, could be associated with the sense of obedience. From there, some changes were made and determined an approximate formula to cause certain behaviors. A session of 15 min with a video geometries patterns having square, rectangles and circles were conducted in a group and found that after a period of time (a 20-day cycle) the group exposed behaved differently. For before starting the sessions, they did a short interview to trace a personality profile. They noted that after the 20th cycle, people in the group had a more passive behavior, which is consistent with the feeling / emotion obedience. This was induced. Scientists are unable to display the videos with geometric patterns and waited until the effect when passed. They noted that two of the five members of the group turned their personality characteristics in 7 days, while the others only got the normal features after 11 days. Another group went through the same sessions and had similar effects. However they needed 27 days and the inhibition of the effects in 17 days. It was observed that the time has a direct influence on the characteristics of the primary personality and IQ. The higher the IQ, the harder it is to enter the associated condition. This is achieved by the reluctance of the will of the individual and logic capacity that it presents. A skeptic, for example, would have a thicker layer to your subconscious. USE OF RESULTS With the results in hand, the Russian government would have a key to manipulate social individuals causing them to any military action. The use could be from military (within the enterprise) to interpersonal to cause some discomfort with a particular situation. The military undergo a battery induction before proceeding to the battlefield, especially the most rebellious soldiers, which are induced to have more passivation before the orders of the commanders. WHAT IS TRUTH, WHICH IS LIE Importantly, this is not brainwashed. It’s just an inductor. It is almost equivalent to the process of hypnosis. As much as conspirólogos insist that is a form of brainwashing, the researchers have not published the method can eliminate memories or add new information. Only the results published are consistent with the inducer method by geometric patterns. There are some videos circulating on the Internet global networks appearing to be those who KSTXI used in the sessions. But the KSTXI to be a government agency, would have the right to publish such videos, unless the results of the research. Although no longer a search Top Secret, videos and formulas would be government ownership, and those with authorship rights over the same. What if there is that there are people who go through KSTXI to draw attention. These people are generally people who like to make hoax or some kind of entertainment. Is Donald Trump a Legitimate President?
So, here’s a fun little graphic sent to me by a friend:
Tumblr media
My friend and I are both Canadian. For us, Donald Trump is always seen through a filter, provided by our great nation’s sovereignty. To suggest that who the President of the United States is doesn’t matter to us is to be a bit naive about the U.S.’s global impact politically, but I think it’s fair to say it matters less to Canadians than it does to level-headed Americans.
(Here’s a “fun” side story. The night Donald J Trump was elected United States President, I was on a 5 hour flight back from Fort McMurray where I’d been working with disaster relief teams. Every channel you could get well in the air on this particular flight was election coverage. Your options were, provide your own entertain, buy a movie, or watch election coverage. The plane was about 15 minutes from landing when it was announced he won. The whole plane was devastated. Children crying. People were sobbing, shaking their heads. The Pilot made an announcement saying he was disappointed too but that everyone really needed to keep calm. Canadians can pretend his election doesn’t affect us, but when faced with the reality of it, everyone on that plane knew the truth.)
So we care but not as much as Americans, who are more directly affected, might. If we care, it’s probably more because we care more about concepts like justice, human decency, honesty and integrity than who gets to sleep in the big white house.
But a lot of Americans are upset, rightfully so. And some Canadians too. Because Trump is awful.
(The fact that Trump is awful? That’s not really up for debate at this point, but if you feel the need to point out that I shouldn’t just assert Trump is an inhuman, racist, sexist, lying prick without evidence, you’re technically right. In lieu of that evidence, howabout you just boot up, CNN, Washington Post, New York Times or literally any television within a hundred miles. Chances are it’s talking about some horrible shit Trump did right now. And if you said “Those are fake news”, do me a favour:
 1) Buy a boat. Maybe give it a fun name like the “U.S.S. Spray Tan”
2) Take the boat out on to the ocean. Really get out there.
3) Pour kerosene on the boat, and then light it.
4) Burn to death, while drowning. Thanks. You’ve just single-handedly raised the level of public discourse in America.)
So Trump’s a dick, but as this chart points out, you can’t just hashtag “Not MY President” and pretend to be doing something about it. In fact, trying to discredit the sitting President, or attack his legitimacy is something we frequently got pretty mad about when people did it to Obama with such iron clad logic as “He’s Black, and therefore from Africa”. When I say “people” I mean obviously, Donald Trump, but hey, let’s not beat a dead horse.
America is rooted in the idea that the will of the people be heard. Donald Trump won an election, and by the rules of the game, that makes him the will of the people. You can hate Donald Trump, but attacking the legitimacy of his presidency is attacking the legitimacy of the election. If trust in the electorate falls low enough, than America’s great experiment ultimately ends in failure. You can’t attack the results you don’t like without eroding the system that got you there.
And it’s not like that system is perfect. As is worth pointing out (and reminding yourself as you hug a teddy bear and rock yourself back and forth in the fetal position at night) Trump lost the popular vote by a wider margin than any president in history, over 3 million votes. Voter suppression of minorities was rampant in places like North Carolina, Michigan and Nevada.  Oh, and FBI director James Comey made public declarations about Hillary Clinton’s emails eleven days before the election in direct violation of FBI policy, commenting on a current and open investigation.  So yeah, the electoral college isn’t perfect and neither is American democracy. People have their thumbs on the scale for sure. Reforms are needed. But for the time bring, you can’t use those problems to undermine the office itself and declare and president illegitimate.
So, if you want to hold Trump accountable for his disgusting words and actions, hey, go ahead. He’s clearly broken a bunch of laws, between his fraudulent university scam, the accusations of sexual assault, and his failure to pay hundreds of people who work for him.   Attacking Trump on specific issues doesn’t negate his election, but it could deal with him without decaying the faith in the electorate. But that should be it, because calling him an illegitimate president would need massive evidence to back it up. Otherwise, you’ve set a precedent for every losing party to attack democracy itself whenever they get a result they don’t like. And surely, the evidence that Trump’s win is illegitimate doesn’t actually exist, or hasn’t been produced...right?
Actually, we have no idea. See, if Trump conspired with the Russian government to undermine his political opponents, that’s not a problem with the election. That’s treason and espionage. It would suggest that America elected, what is in essence, a stand-in for a foreign government. That would be completely illegitimate. The CIA, NSA and FBI clearly investigated Trump ties to the Russian government, but none of them seem to be willing to release too much in the way of details to the press. Ex-MI6 agent Christopher Steele leaked a massive report to the press, suggesting Trump is basically a puppet candidate, but the media focused on a juicy bit of gossip about Trump being urinated on by a pair of Russian prostitutes instead, and then turned around and called Steele “discredited”. Despite the fact that he has not been discredited and in fact jeopardized his career to release those documents when it was clear his superiors wouldn’t, because they feared revealing sources they had in Russia.
About a dozen members of Trump’s campaign, including Secretary of State nominee Rex Tillerson, have strong financial and political ties to Russia. And Trump has refused for weeks now to say anything negative about Vladimir Putin or his hostile regime. Remember, Russia invaded Crimea this year and that problem didn’t go away when CNN started election coverage. Russia wants the Ukraine, they want to undermine NATO and potentially start a new Warsaw Pact. That would be infinitely easier to do if Trump defunded American support to NATO which he has publicly stated he planned to do over a dozen times during the election. Note that supporting NATO and America’s European allies was standard Republican policy until Trump suddenly flipped one day. It’s highly suspicious.
But, you can’t impeach a president on suspicion alone. And whatever tack you take on attacking Trump, you can’t do it by attacking the election results or the electoral college directly. If you want to avoid a president who can lose the popular vote by 3 million and still win office, that will take thoughtful reform. If you want Trump gone, you’re going to need to attack his crimes and his words at every opportunity. But #Notmypresident accomplishes nothing, and worse, might even damage American democracy. Pick another strategy.
