Y’ever read something and have understanding that has eluded you interminably suddenly stop, curl up, and snuggle neatly into a fold in your brain because a new way opened to it?

did you know they say calculus is the language of God. did you know they tried to hold math up to infinity like a candle to the void. did you know statisticians plunged into the vastness of random chance and picked out patterns and equations and eight hundred ways to tell you how big your inevitable errors are and how far off those guesses at errors might be. math haters I can't sit with you anymore. human innovation is cradled in these ancient, methodical, desperate attempts at understanding what we are not designed to understand

In addition to eating foxes, rabbits can eat grass. The grass also eats foxes. Our equations chart the contours of Fox Hell.
Broken Model [Explained]
Transcript
[Miss Lenhart is holding a pointer to a whiteboard, indicating the last part of the last line of text.]
Miss Lenhart: Hmm, looks like I accidentally swapped the predation terms.
Miss Lenhart: If this were an ecology class, I would have to fix that.
Miss Lenhart: Unfortunately for those 20 poor foxes, this is calculus, and the math says these 400 rabbits are hungry for meat.
[There are three lines on the white board, where the '...' parts in the bottom line is illegible:] Nrabbits(0) = 400 Nfoxes(0) = 20 dN0/dt = ... dN.../... = ...
[Caption below the panel:] Every broken mathematical model is just a glimpse into a terrifying alternate universe.

Math tells us the saddest love stories
"Parallel lines were never meant to meet"
"Tangent lines only meet once and grow apart forever"
"Asymptotes get closer and closer but will never be together "

I love how Fat Bear Week is like one of those ancient holidays where they have to determine when it falls by checking when the barley harvest ripens or something. Like the Katmai rangers have to go out into the wilderness and check on the chonkiness of the bears, and when it gets to be That Time they can officially declare The Best Holiday
(Oct 2-8 this year in case you observe)
