hello 911 why are all the LO volumes classified as grades 6-12 except for the newest volume which is more appropriately categorized as grades 9-12
please no
#and no i'm not trying to be all 'think of the children'#but it also squicks me out to think of the potential of 11-12 year olds learning about sex through the onscreen rape scene in vol 1#and also minthe verbally abusing hades during sex#esp when these categories are also meant for PARENTS not just kids#the parents are the ones buying the books and being told that these books are appropriate for their kids#like why is the trial arc volume the one that gets the age bump LOL#what about the trial arc is more “mature” than the rest of it lmao#“kids under 12 won't understand courtroom proceedings” ok first of all the courtroom proceedings in LO are completely made up and stupid#but also the trial arc isn't appropriate for kids but all the other shit in LO leading up to it is ??? hello ???#i know i'm probably blowing it way out of proportion but ughgh it's still ick#know your audience jfc#on the flipside it's really funny because it goes to show that anyone older than 18 is probably too old for LO lmaoooo#makes me think of all the ppl who talk about how they liked LO when they were younger and then later realized how gross it is#lore olympus critical#anti lore olympus#lo critical

I know I'm late (I have my copy of the Book of Bill but I've yet to read it bc I've been busy) but BoB basically making BillFord canon in the year of our lord 2024 is so fucking funny and weirdly vindicating bc BACK IN THE DAY!!!! I saw that shit. So many of us saw the way Bill acted around Ford and went, "...he kinda fruity, huh?" and we were MOCKED!!!! SCORNED!!!!!!!! TOLD WE WERE "glorifying abusive relationships" WHEN ACTUALLY, WE SAW THE TRUTH!!!!!!!! 😤😤😤
#bill cipher#book of bill#book of bill spoilers#kinda i guess#also this isn't that deep I just think toxic old man triangle yaoi being HEAVILY IMPLIED as canon is fucking hilarious#tbh I *personally* think Ford is aroace and Bill is... Bill....... so that never would have worked out anyways LMFAO#but Bill being a bitter messy ex is fucking hilarious#Bill really is a little bitch tbh and I love that for him#billford#billford shippers are eating good and I love that for y'all

Everyone adapting Dracula: so what do you think of our adaptation?
Me: I don’t love all the toxic sexist stuff you put in ngl.
Them: no no it’s fine. the book was written in the 1800s so....
Me: ok but was any of this stuff you added actually in the book?
Them: ... no
Me: Wasn’t the book about the 1800s version of a gnc power couple with their poly coded friend group fighting the embodiment of assault and toxic relationships?
Them: hm yeah idk. it was written in the 1800s so like. it’s gotta have strict gender roles and slut shaming! woot!
Me: ... yeah dude i think this is a you thing
#like yeah ofc the book is dated bc it was written in the 1800s but i feel like ppl use the fact that it was old timey to throw a#ton of sexist and toxic stuff into their adaptations without getting called out even tho it wasn't even in the book...#also the wa dracula is basically the embodiment of toxic masculinity and jonathan harker isn't and they all hate on jonathan and glorify#dracula s this tragic misunderstood hero who all the women 'really' actually definitely totally wanted#is very sketch#Dracula#dracula daily#my post

Was gonna make a post about Stan having chronic pain because I have no doubt his scar gives him persistent trouble, but he is also an old man. It is a bit obvious that he's got aches and pains on the daily
#i think it was disability intimacy(?)#one of the dj books I've read talked about how cultural expectation plays into disability#and how old people often aren't considered disabled because it's just expected that they'll be having problems#which was a really interesting point#but regardless of the wider cultural conception i would still personally consider older people who have xyz going on disabled#so to be clear this post isn't saying the label chronic pain no longer applies#just that it turns from a headcanon to just pointing out the obvious#stanley pines#gravity falls

everyone clap for me
I saw an incredibly brain dead take on activism and I didn't engage with the post
I'm just going to vague about it in the tags like a mature adult

I'm posting this here and now because I'm going to be in the Netherlands visiting my brother for a week, so have a comic I made in two and a half days because I had an idea and couldn't stop lol
The creatures on the bridge have a mother that is considered an Old God in their universe, (her design may change in the future, but this is what I've got so far). The words for the comic were borrowed from a song I listened to a few weeks ago and I went "huh, I could use that", anyway, enjoy!

The art is lovely and now I'm gonna ramble because that's what I do when I care about something.
For the love of women, please PLEASE can fan artists remember to add muscle to their Shadowhunter ladies? I'll commend Bowater for cleverly giving James that sculpted and lean look without making him a beefcake (nothing against beefcakes, I'd love to hug them), but Cordelia is once again suffering from Arms And Shoulders Too Slender It's Hard To Even Imagine Her Picking Up A Sword. There is some there, yes, but artists shouldn't be afraid of giving particularly Female Main Characters weight and toned muscle. Cordelia is supposed to be nearly the same height as James as far as I can remember, and she's curvy, and full, and she wields a sword like it's second nature to her. Please explain why she looks so tiny in James' lap.
Also I'm pretty sure marriage runes are supposed to go over the heart whenever possible (thinking about Will's parabatai rune being over his heart instead -- he didn't get Tessa to draw over the scar, did he??) and... either I'm looking at the picture wrong or James' rune is not over where his heart should be.
For the matter, where are their other runes and scars?? James' Voyance rune isn't even on his hand. And I'm pretty sure he's right handed. I could have that wrong though.
Another thing: no one can ever decide what Cordelia's hair looks like and it's the funniest thing to me. This is what happens when all you do is vaguely say the colour is like fire but also like rose petals but also a flowing river of those things but also is Red (probably for redhead, but then from there I never understand where the rose petal analogy comes from considering the typical rose is a deep bloody colour -- I do acknowledge the existence of those light orange varieties though which might more closely resemble red hair). In the end, I'm glad readers can infer what they want and imagine the characters how they like.
Anyone else think James looks like he's built like a tennis player? Oddly specific, maybe, but it was a thought I had. Mostly the arms and somewhat narrow body.
James' hair is nice, his eyes are an interesting take on gold in the shadows. Bowater managed to also make him look closely related to his father, so bravo for that.
In the end, the focus is obviously on the marriage runes and not other physical aspects outside of it being clear that this is James and Cordelia. Bowater's style is very beautiful and elegant. Love the way fabric and lighting is done too. I'll add also that it is possible to be a smaller person who is slender but still strong so I mean Cordelia's not necessarily done wrong, I just interpret her appearance differently. Obviously, they're both hot and they're both attractive and I have my qualms with the series, chronicles, and author -- the fandom I am so-so on, though I'm still here, aren't I? And I'm taking the time to ramble about my thoughts on a piece of fanart -- but this is good. Gorgeous, even. Both James and Cordelia are beautiful.
#side note: am I the only one who thought cc made a mistake trying to describe james as handsome in cordelia's eyes#as opposed to matthew being the beautiful one#when there has always been a deep and aching strange beauty to james??#james herondale#cordelia carstairs#vaguely crediting charlie bowater though it isn't like you can't find a dozen more copies of this with the credit#also yes I mercilessly picked this apart because I am still trying to find avenues to express my dissatisfaction with tlh#I search for flaws what else can I say#I am aware of it but it's hard to turn those thoughts processes off#maybe I'll write a post at some point all about the authors I once Loved that I am now deeply critical of#a lot of people would hate me for it but eh#also we all know about the marvelisation of cinema#but is it time to talk about the marvelisation of book series/worlds?#or perhaps it has a better and more book-focused name? the jkr approach? rick riordan's marvel-esque flaw? the sjm plague? the clare affair?#we'll workshop it#maybe it's the curse of middleschool-YA series and the issue of aginh readers in fandoms#and I don't mean this as discriminatory against anyone older in fandom because there is not really a limit nor should there be#for most media#but the issue of when the readers grow up amd authors try to accomodate for that -- not necessarily by making their work more adult --#but by making MORE because there is also an influx of new fans and they want to stay relevant while retaining the old#it's a whole thing though I'd need to sit down to properly organise my thoughts to talk about it

My goodness there is a lot of bullshit in the Jiang Cheng tag again.
#y'all really spend too much time thinking about a character you dislike#i on the other hand have severe jiang cheng brainrot and love thinking about him and reading scenes of the novel to back me up#so just to get it out#jiang cheng has at no point treated wei wuxian as a servant#he also did not abandon him right up until the moment wei wuxian killed jin zixuan and i think jc would've probably gotten over that#if it hadn't led directly to Jiang Yanli's death#again wei wuxian's defection was a fake ploy they made up to keep yunmeng jiang safe it is right there in the book#jiang cheng did in fact publicly acknowledge the debt he and wei wuxian owed to wen ning and wen qing (at least the amount he was aware of)#but was steamrolled over by the other sect leaders especially Nie Mingjue#talking about the wen remnants they were not just old people and kids like in the drama but actually cultivators#and it is very possible that they were part of the invading force of Lotus Pier because Wen Ning was there with some cultivators under him#and even though I still think it was wrong of jiang cheng to lead the siege of the burial mound why is anyone pretending that it was about#murdering the wen remnants for him and not getting to wei wuxian#and this isn't to say that Jiang Cheng is completely misunderstood and all good#he is still a deeply unpleasant person with a mountain of trauma#he isn't as bad or selfish as some of you make him out to be#just like wei wuxian isn't as good and pure as some of you like to pretend#all of the mdzs characters are at least a little awful with the notable exception of the kids and maybe Xiao Xingchen#thank you for coming to my ted talk

it's weird how "things i care about" and "things i blog about" are overlapping but very distinct circles. like yeah i care obsessively about the ulster cycle and also blog about it constantly but there are so many things in my life that i care about that i just..... don't post about. so many books i enjoy that i have nothing to say other than maybe sometimes reblogging a post about them when it comes my way. so many things that i'm secretly feral about but do it all inside my own head
#especially the more obscure shit bc there isn't a lot of point going off on some long character meta if nobody knows what i'm talking about?#i'd rather do it in a group chat with like. two friends who've read the book#also with new publications there's the fear of spoilers and things so i can't yell about character deaths as much#except when in an existing fandom space where it's common knowledge#whereas with medieval literature i think it's fair game. spoilers aren't really a thing in 1000-year-old stories#especially when they're called shit like 'the violent death of [name]'#personal#i should write fic of more obscure things though#dipping my toe in the water writing fic of my friends' books so i know i have a solid grasp of THEIR feelings about the book#gonna work my way steadily through the group chat perhaps#but maybe one day i'll write fic of something modern where i've never met the author. le gasp

wild to me how the english translation of natsume is just. largely out of print i guess?? like half of the volumes you can't get ANYWHERE for love nor money, not even on amazon (unhallowed be its name)! i've found like five sites that sell print volumes and they've all got the same selection (vols 1, 2, 17, 19, 27-29, sometimes 24-26) and if you want any others you are SOL. though what's interesting is i'm pretty sure last time i looked it up a few months ago, you couldn't get volume 17 anywhere either. did they do a print run just of that volume?? total mystery.
#and then amazon does have a handful of volumes you can't get anywhere else (used) but they're selling for $40 to HUNDREDS#OF DOLLARS??? the volume with yorishima's intro is going for $251 😭#i went so far as to look up the french translation and of course THEY are all in print and selling for 8 euros. i'll be real. i am tempted#it's nice that i can read volumes online but i really want to read them in bed before i fall asleep and i just cannot do that w e-versions#i guess i'll just check back in every few months to see if they've decided to go back and reprint any old volumes idk#and probably go back to checking them all out at the library. but the thing is the urge strikes me suddenly and i want to read them#immediately#this is such a non-problem i'm just. surprised i guess? i understand this isn't a hugely in demand series but it is#still running...and they're making a new season of the anime...idk idk i just expected it to be more accessible#take my money viz media!!!#natsume's book of friends#natsume yuujinchou

Why do I keep picking up Riley Sager books
#I've thought 2 were actually pretty good (the house across the lake + home before dark)#i disliked or hated 2 (lock every door + final girls)#and i dnf'd 1 because i was hating it so i looked up spoilers and decided it was not going to get better for me (survive the night)#i forgot to cancel my hold on the only one left and now I'm trying to get through it but...#idk. this feels a lot like the book of cold cases i think (and i didn't love it)#i have a feeling that the twists and reveals in this one are going to be absolutely ridiculous#like the old lady is 100% not actually paralyzed and probably isn't even the person everyone thinks she is#and there's definitely going to be at least one secret baby (hers or her sister's or a secret sibling from their father sleeping around idk)#part of the house is probably going to dramatically slide into the ocean and take at least one person with it#or maybe there really is a ghost idk (i don't think there is. i think it's the old lady walking around and she's actually Virginia.)#(i can not keep her name in my head for some reason)

Here's the tentative outline of the TSG paper, as okayed by the professor whom I've been discussing the project with:
intro to the trend of recent adaptations/retellings reframing TSG as a story about grief
an assertion that the book is really about healing from childhood e m o t i o n a l n e g l e c t (CEN) (my thesis?)
defining CEN and distinguishing it from traditional grief
an analysis of CEN in the text
how this interacts with what these adaptations/retellings are doing
conclusion about the importance of the text’s depiction of CEN and why it’s worth acknowledging/exploring
It's a relief to pin this down and be able to go into this with some kind of focus. I've already got a start on the first paragraph. I'm trying a method of drafting by just constructing the basic argument and then working in all the evidence and research later. My college papers tended to take forever to write because I drafted them with Finished Perfection in mind for each sentence, which is stressful and easy to get bogged down with. We'll see how it works. The paper needs to be completed by October, probably the end of the month at the very latest, but I'd like to get it finished in enough time to fully polish and not have to stress about a tight deadline.
I can do this. Probably. It's been a few years but I might still have it in me.
#random personal stuff#of course I write mini-essays here all the time!#but those aren't presented as scholarly with proper citations and you guys presumably forgive me if I'm not clever enough#Dr. B. (the one who tried to rope me into that roundtable presentation) is already talking about#trying to get some of my old papers published in a journal#or working on a book#she is so full of enthusiasm and confidence and grandiose ideas that it's both impressive and kind of terrifying#don't know if I really want to do any of these things#I mean even assuming a journal would want my work (which isn't really on that level I think) what would be the point#I used to want to be an academic but lost that after the thesis and everything before that#the last time I was working with a professor who wanted me to do Grand Things...it didn't end well#and of course Dr. B. is nothing like That Man and would not have his motivations#but all the same I don't want to commit to anything on this level for the foreseeable future#I'm just writing a paper so I can present it at a convention because that's about the only thing I can do that makes anyone proud#got to justify my existence somehow
