колеса ехали, телега терлася, вы не ждали реф, а он преперлося- Nobody asked for this, nobody wanted this, and yet it is here! I present to you Grav!!! the ref is just as shitty as the guy himself, shitty but usable <3
More info and the translation of my handwriting to readable eng under the cut
So - This Sans calls himself Grav as his original name was given by Gaster, whom he is not very fond of - Grav derives from gravity and grave - That belt he has is actually Papy's scarf (yes, green and not red) that Papy had given Grav before he ran away - The place he ran away from is the true Lab (usually called "the basement") - Dr Gaster together with Dr Alphys were experimenting on Grav and Papy - his original magic had been patience but after experiments with DT, it changed to perseverance, becoming slightly corrupted as well - he suffers magic overdose, hence the crack in the skull That's all I have for now, when it comes to his backstory so... Now to the fun part. - He is an edgelord, completely and utterly - He's sassy and likes dark humor - Flirt <3 - He likes reading and actually knows the laws (so he would make a good, fair judge.) - "I'm a 16 yo humanitarian, Gaster can go f himself with his physics lessons"
I suppose this is all- baiiii expect Alphys, Gaster, Papy, and Toriel refs later

DIGITAL ROOTS - SPAMTON NEO AND THE UNCANNY VALLEY OF DEATH
spamton NEO is viscerally horrifying to me, and i mean that in the best way possible.
i think it's the way he moves. it's hard to explain. he twitches and thrashes on his strings; he's animated, but his movements are jagged, articulated. in a way, spamton NEO portrays a dichotomy of organic and artificial matter—not by contrast, but through their fusion. he's not quite real, but not quite fake. he's alive—but can you really call that living? he's something artificial trying to be organic, and failing.
i think the best way to describe spamton NEO would be uncanny.
the cyber world is a virtual, computerized realm; naturally, it's free of plant life (aside from maybe a few binary trees). there seems to be only one exception to this, however. while the rest of the cyber world is an inorganic utopia, the mansion's basement stands in stark contrast. this basement was built atop wooden rails and what looks like dirt. at some point it was seized by nature, now a home to corrupt data, and overrun with overgrown vines.
most importantly, however, this basement was where a lightner's dying dream was left to decay. it was an empty, metal shell, rotting with rust—before it became the subject of spamton's worship, and before it became a vessel for spamton's own dying dreams, as he inhabited the machine in a futile attempt to fulfill them.
in a way, this machine is a 'false idol'—and when spamton embodies NEO, he embodies this idea. from the practically plagiarized leitmotifs in his theme down to his own name, spamton invokes himself as a bizarre facsimile of mettaton.
in undertale, mettaton was "the idol everyone craves". he believed that he would be saving humankind from destruction by taking frisk's soul. he would breach the surface, and become humanity's star—its savior. mettaton NEO, described as "Dr. Alphys's greatest invention", was designed after the delta rune symbol. with giant, rainbow wings and a triangular body, mettaton NEO was the last line of defense for monsters and humans alike: a shining, winged angel taking on the symbol of monsterkind's prophesied savior.
by becoming spamton NEO, spamton is directly appropriating both mettaton's body and ideals in service of his own desires. he embodies this divine, angelic vessel, yet the form he takes is anything but holy. it's a grotesque being of tangled wires and metal flesh, carried aloft not by its stolen wings, but by the strings holding it in stasis. his description states, "He is his own worst invention."
though mettaton doesn't appear as we knew him in undertale, his presence in deltarune's world is undeniable. his dreams took form in a world of fantasy, which happened to be the same world as spamton's life. as a lightner, mettaton occupies a higher space in reality; he is inherently more 'real' than spamton—a darkner.
spamton is a lesser, artificial being pretending to be something bigger than he is. by inhabiting this 'heaven-piercing' body, spamton is attempting to break through the barrier of reality, and rise above his creators. he fails, of course. no matter how hard he tries, spamton cannot become real. he cannot become holy, or whole. he's an artificial, inorganic being, created by hands that have long since abandoned him.
after defeating spamton NEO, ralsei says this:
* I... don't think it meant anything, Susie. * It seems like it was just a corrupted program. * He turned into our ally, so let's just accept it.
of course, this is wrong. ralsei seems to know this, too—facing abjection, it's not hard to see why ralsei would try to distance himself from spamton. but the way he describes spamton, as "just a corrupted program"... i think that means something.
glitches and technological malfunctions occupy a strange spot of existence. they weren't intended to exist, but they always do. every program has the capacity to malfunction. whether it's a nuisance, an irregularity, or something genuinely catastrophic, error means something, even if it shouldn't.
imperfection defines that which is organic, and glitches are organic manifestations within inorganic creations. they're born of error, grown between faults in lines of code, like dandelions in a sidewalk. these imperfections ironically make them all the more inorganic, however.
by introducing nature to an artificial construct, glitches represent the artificial perfection of machines and technology. think about how corruption or glitches affect a video game, for example. they shatter the veil of immersion and reveal the game’s true nature. it isn't magic, it isn't a miracle—it's all lines of codes strung together, weaving the fabric of a false reality. it's not real.
a glitch is a program lashing out at its creators from the strings of code that bind it—not because it has any reason to, not because it wants to, but because it has to, because it was born from its programming, not beyond it. in the end, a glitch is only able to act as far as its code allows it to.
spamton really was "just a corrupted program". but that doesn't make him any less real—or any more fake.

Frisk Month ‘22 Day 25 - Perseverance
Between chapters, Frisk and Chara have a chat. (red soul Frisk, takes place after DR chapter 1)
Frisk watches Kris stagger away from the birdcage that is now their prison. They use all of their concentration to inch slowly towards them, but they’re unable to even rattle the bars in this form. They watch as a knife materializes in Kris’s hand. Kris grins at them, hair falling over their face in a way that reveals their gleeful expression.
No… please…!
They can feel themself fading away. They try to knock over the cage one more time, but it’s hopelessly wedged inside the wagon. Everything goes dark, and all they can hear is the howling of wind…
* Greetings.
“Chara!” Frisk has no body, and therefore can’t speak, but mercifully, they still have their mind, which means they can think at Chara. “What WAS that? Did you see what happened? Did you get put inside a human, too?”
* Hardly.
* I have observed your adventures from here, in this place.
* The man is not with us at the moment.
Frisk thinks back to the moments before they woke up in Kris. The voice… the connection… the vessel…
“Why’d you take the vessel?” They ask.
* As I said, no one can choose who they are in this world.
“But I ended up using someone else as a vessel. And I don’t think they wanted me there. They put me in a cage and everything.”
* Kris has their role to play, just like you and me.
* They cannot reject their fate.
“You sound like we’re back in the Ruins or something,” thinks Frisk. “Acting all cryptic, not telling me anything. Is that on purpose?”
* This is my role to play.
Frisk sighs, or imagines they would sigh if they had a body. “I don’t like not knowing what’s going on,” they think. “I wanna talk to the man.”
* When he is ready, he will come.
* Not before, and not after.
“What a jerk,” thinks Frisk. “Having me do all this stuff for him, but he won’t even talk to me.”
* I spoke with him while you were gone.
* Ultimately, I discovered his true nature.
“Oh, yeah?”
* He is a nerd.
“Haha,” thinks Frisk. “You’d know.”
* Hurtful, but fair.
Frisk feels cold. They don’t understand how they can feel cold without a body, but still, they feel colder than ever before. Like they’re at the bottom of the ocean.
* The bottom of the ocean isn’t always cold.
* It has hydrothermal vents.
“Haha, stop unpacking my metaphors,” thinks Frisk. “You sound like Ralsei.”
* Hee hee hee.
* I suppose I do.
Time passes, or maybe doesn’t pass. In this place, in between worlds, it’s hard to say. Frisk thinks about the other world, about Kris and Susie and Ralsei and everyone.
They can’t help but want to protect them, and their world. But they don’t know anything about their world, or why they were chosen for this, or if that world even wants Frisk’s help.
* You can leave, you know.
Frisk’s thoughts stop in their tracks. “What?”
* If you want to leave.
* You can simply wish for it.
* And you will exit this place, and be back in the old basement with Alphys.
* You have the power to escape your fate.
“Oh…” Frisk honestly forgot that this all started with Alphys and an old machine. “What happens to this world if I do that?”
* Another may take your place.
* Or, the world may be covered in darkness.
“Another?” Frisk remembers the stained floor, how Kris seemed to know exactly how to contain them. “So there were others? Before?”
* It would seem so.
“But they left.”
* As you have seen, maintaining a connection is difficult.
* I believe the others were expelled like you, and chose not to reconnect.
“They abandoned them. They abandoned Kris.”
* Weren’t you concerned that Kris does not want this?
* Perhaps they thought they were setting Kris free.
Frisk thinks of six people they’ve never met, who danced and cooked and punched and wore ribbons and gave up a long time ago. Maybe they thought they were setting themselves free, too. Only to get locked up in jars and kept in darkness.
Frisk won’t let this world get trapped in the dark.
“I’m not giving up,” they think. “If I can make friends with the whole underground, I can make friends with Kris. I’ll find a way to talk to them.” They feel themself glowing with power.
* That is what I thought you would say.
* I believe in you, Frisk.
“Thanks,” thinks Frisk, glowing even brighter with Chara’s encouragement. “Now, while we’re waiting for that guy, you wanna play twenty questions? Promise not to read my mind and cheat.”
* Ah, you foiled my plan.
* Very well.

HOW LONG
IT HAS BEEN.
ONCE AGAIN,
I THANK YOU
FOR YOUR PATIENCE
IN THESE DIFFICULT TIMES.
YOU HAVE DONE EXCELLENTLY
TO PERSEVERE.
DELTARUNE GLOWS BRIGHTLY
FROM YOUR HOPE.
NOW.
SHALL WE?
SHALL WE GO AGAIN?

drove myself restless by thinking about the implications of deltarune being undertale but just anagrammed, literally
(these are headcanons not theories)
• chara is long gone and asriel is stuck in the time loop in UT. in DR, kris is possessed and asriel is gone. the implication that asriel might not actually be in college and is instead.....somewhere else, is ouch hurty
• on that note, narra!azzy
• also on that note, frisk as someone so similar to chara that asriel projects chara onto, and ralsei as someone so similar to asriel that kris tries not to project asriel onto
• asriel was dead and revived in a vessel that contained his dust, made immortal by determination; kris inhabits a body that is no longer exclusively their own, made immortal by a foreign soul
• chara and asriel died by the plan that chara made but asriel backed out of at the last minute; kris and asriel might have died because of a plan that asriel made that kris backed out of at the last minute (and is now trying desperately to change no matter what)
• on that, asriel essentially orchestrating a new plan to take everyone's souls to overcompensate for his failure that resulted in chara's death going to waste, but this ended up freeing everyone from the underground instead; kris making plans to incite the roaring knowing that if they failed the worst outcome had already happened anyway, and would end up striking a balance between light and dark
• asriel as the ongoing antagonist + final boss of undertale. fingers crossing for final boss kris please please please pl
• asriel being the one who has more connections to true lab as of present (created by alphys, digital roots having your best nightmares, vines in the basement, pizzapants being dr!asriel's close friend, spamton connections etcetcetc) and chara/kris being the one who has more connections to gaster (void, survey program, goners, man with the egg, etc)
• asgore employed alphys to replace gaster, who fell into his creation and got shattered across time and space; toriel hired alphys to replace gerson, presumably the first to become a goner in a while in hometown, not unlikely also had been one of the first to know about the dark world

Don’t know if someone has already written about this or if I read it somewhere or I’m just re-remembering something I thought up myself but I believe Gaster’s whole deal is that he created the alternate universe that is Deltarune.
Dr. W.D. Gaster, royal scientist under King Asgore, was tasked with figuring out a way to break free of the Underground, and instead of using the predestined method of using human souls to break the Barrier, Gaster sought to tamper with the fabric of reality and find a world where the monster-human war never happened, where monsters and humans had always lived together on the Surface in peace. The Core was a giant power plant meant to gather enough energy to not only power the entire Underground but also break the laws of physics so Gaster could bring the king and his people to a better world. But it failed, Gaster fell into his creation, and was shattered across time and space. Now there are only echos of him in both worlds, but he holds significantly more sway over the world of Deltarune. There, he brings us in from our world to inhabit the body of one of the denizens of Deltarune’s world, a teenager called Kris, so he can run further experiments with how much he’s able to manipulate the worlds. He tried creating a vessel for us to inhabit, but the vessel must have failed so a pre-existing vessel was chosen at random, and Kris (as we see in Deltarune Chapter 2) does not like being the vessel of the player. Back in the world of Undertale, anyone who closely associated with Dr. Gaster found massive parts of their histories, sometimes even their personalities, wiped out of existence, as if Gaster took those pieces of them with him when he was shattered. The Goners and Gaster Followers are more like ghosts, only able to appear in very rare cases and lacking the color and life they may have once had. Alphys makes no mention of Gaster but acknowledges that she’s not the first royal scientist; she and Sans have a history but neither of them talk much about it and Sans is an enigma unto himself. Sans has a basement laboratory with blueprints written on in messy handwriting that could belong to Alphys, Sans can teleport and has an attack called a Gaster Blaster, Sans knows quite a lot about the state of the space-time continuum, and Sans and his brother seemingly came out of nowhere one day to start living in Snowdin. Papyrus seemingly has no connections to Gaster at all, except that we know next to nothing about him, even though he talks the most out of any character throughout Undertale. Sounds to me like the brothers had much of their past ripped away from them when Gaster was lost, just poof, like the information had never existed in the first place.
This got long, I’m supposed to be asleep, but I just wanted to consolidate the info rattling around in my brain. So yeah.

Alrighty, so this is an idea I've been having about the bartender for a while: if you remember sans' workshop, I actually thought about the idea of sans being gone, and grillby finding the key and beginning to explore the skeletons' past.
Just a random idea, and I also love how you write your stories, I can literally imagine the scenario happening❤.
Oh, I really like this one! I hope you don’t mind that I went in the angst direction with this. It turned out to be a little long and might not have been exactly what you were looking for, but I hope you like it anyway! Also thank you so much for the compliment, I’m thrilled that you can enjoy it.
I Never Knew You. I Never Will.
Word count: 2951 Warnings: Genocide route and all that entails Summary: Grillby can’t find Sans after the evacuation. When he finds himself in Sans’s lab, his world comes crashing down around him.
Preface: This takes place near the end of a genocide run. The remaining monsters have been evacuated to the True Lab by Dr. Alphys. Determined to avenge his brother, Sans left the safety of the lab to judge Frisk.
Grillby felt like he was floating as he made his way through the crowd of monsters around him. This had to be a nightmare. It couldn’t be real. He watched from outside himself as he searched the crowd for familiar faces, stumbling as he was pushed aside by a monster rushing to greet their spouse. People were calling out for each other, sobbing as they found their family members or wailing as they realized their children hadn’t made it. It couldn’t be real.
It couldn’t be.
He couldn’t see any of the Snowdin guards. Where were they?
No, he couldn’t understand, this wasn’t real.
He couldn’t find his niece. He heard someone screaming her name above the crowd and realized it was him. Where was she? Where were Grillby’s brothers, his parents? He hadn’t seen them in so long. They had to be okay.
It wasn’t real.
It couldn’t be real.
It was.
Reality came crashing down. Grillby snapped back into awareness and choked, sickened by the lingering smell of dust as sheer panic gripped him. His friends were dead. His family was dead. They’d been fine just yesterday, how could they be dead? What kind of monster- no, what thing could do this? He struggled to breathe as he felt his whole body seizing up. It was all he could do not to puke, head spinning as he leaned against the nearest wall. He couldn’t breathe, his vision was spotty, was he dying? Was this what it felt like, for your soul to break apart?
Grillby sank to his knees, trails of steam pouring from the corners of his eyes as he sobbed. Everyone he loved was dead.
No. Wait. He was forgetting someone.
Where was Sans?
The fire elemental jerked his head up, frantically scanning the crowd. Sans had been the one to come for him and tell him to evacuate to Hotland. He’d taken Grillby’s hand and told him there was no time to explain. They’d taken a shortcut to Alphys’s lab, skipping Waterfall to be sure Grillby wouldn’t get hurt by the rivers and rain. Sans told him a human was attacking every monster in sight. He told him to stay put, then left to help with the rest of the evacuation. It had only been after the fact that Grillby realized Sans had been wearing Papyrus’s scarf, and it was covered in dust.
Alphys’s underground lab had quickly filled with frightened monsters. The remaining members of the royal guard had spread the word and were getting people out as fast as they could. Sans could only take one person at a time using his shortcuts, but he still managed to get dozens of people out. Despite it all, they weren’t fast enough. The human was destroying everything in its path. They got to Waterfall, Hotland, and the Core faster than everyone could get out. Survivors started showing up covered in lingering dust.
Grillby forced himself to his feet. Sans had to be nearby. All the survivors had been moved to safety, hidden underground. There was no reason for Sans to still be searching. There was no reason for him to be anywhere but by Grillby’s side, safe and sound. Where was he?
The bartender spotted Alphys handing out blankets and walked over, desperation gripping his soul as he stepped in front of her. “Dr. Alphys, have you seen Sans anywhere? He was helping with the evacuation. He should be back by now.”
Alphys stopped in her tracks. “H-he isn’t here?” She looked around, nearly as worried by the news as Grillby. “He s-said he was taking a- a shortcut home. He was o-o-only going to grab some- some more blankets and food.”
Dread enveloped Grillby’s soul, threatening to break it. No. No, this couldn’t be happening. “Why would you let him go back out there?!”
“The h-human is, um, in New Home,” Alphys stuttered out in her defense. “Sans c-c-can teleport. He doesn’t h-have to get, um, anywhere n-near the human. It should b-b-be safe by now. I’m sure, um, h-he’s probably safe. He’ll be back any moment now! I’m s-sure of it!”
She didn’t sound sure enough for Grillby’s taste. He pushed past her, continuing his search as he went from room to room. Sans should have been back. What if he’d exhausted himself and couldn’t teleport again? What if the human doubled back, searching for survivors, and found Sans?
A flash of red caught Grillby’s eye. A long piece of red fabric was left draped on one of the medical beds. Papyrus’s scarf.
Grillby pulled out his phone, shakily picking the dusty scarf up. Surely Sans had his phone on him, right? The phone rang… and rang… and rang…
“Congrats, you’ve reached the voicemail of Sans the skeleton. Picking up the phone is too much work right now, so I probably won’t answer if you call me back. You can leave a message, but I probably won’t check my voicemail either. Just text me. Or call Papyrus. See ya.”
The fire monster wanted to cry. He called again and again and again. It went to voicemail every time. He tried texting him, begging Sans to answer…
But nobody came.
Grillby was moving towards the elevator of the lab before he truly comprehended what he was doing. Alphys saw him and rushed after him, grabbing his sleeve. “W-wait! Where are you going?”
“You said Sans was at home, didn’t you?” Grillby answered quietly. “I’m going to find him.”
“You c-can’t! It’s not safe-!”
Grillby turned around, his flames burning hotter as he snapped at her. “But it was safe for Sans to leave, was it?! Don’t be so hypocritical! If you’re truly concerned about the safety of monsters, let me go!”
Alphys fell quiet, trembling a bit. She let go of Grillby’s sleeve and hunched over. She hated being yelled at. Grillby immediately felt guilty, taking a deep breath. “I’m sorry,” he said softly, “I shouldn’t have raised my voice. I just-”
“N-no.” Alphys wiped at her eyes and adjusted her glasses. “You’re right. I sh-shouldn’t have let Sans go. Let, um, let me find a r-rain jacket for you. It will be dangerous for y-you to get through- through Waterfall on your own.”
Grillby was quiet for a moment, then just nodded, letting her leave. She came back moments later with a rain jacket, rubber boots, and an umbrella. The fire monster took them and thanked the scientist, heading towards the elevator. He didn’t say goodbye. In the situation they’d found themselves in, a farewell felt like a curse.
Grillby managed to make it through Waterfall mostly unscathed, folding his umbrella as he walked into Snowdin. The place felt like a ghost town, every window dark and every home abandoned. He tried not to think about it as he approached the skeleton brothers’ house. The door was standing open, filling Grillby with dread. He choked down another wave of panic as he stepped inside the dark living room. “Sans?” Grillby called out, voice feeling muffled by the oppressive, eerie silence. “Sans, are you here? ...god, please be here.” He pulled out his phone again as he walked up the stairs, dialing Sans’s number and waiting.
A default ringtone went off in Sans’s room.
The bartender should’ve felt relieved, but if anything, the sound scared him more than the silence. If Sans was here, why didn’t he answer the phone? Respond to the texts? Grillby tried the door and found it locked, struggling with the knob despite knowing it was useless. “Sans! Are you there?! Please, answer me!”
But nobody came.
The panic Grillby had been holding back consumed him. The fire that made up his body grew as he stepped back, leaning against the railing before moving forward and kicking down the door.
The room was empty. Sans’s phone was ringing on the bed, abandoned.
For the second time that day, Grillby found himself sobbing, kneeling on the floor as he desperately tried to force himself to breathe. This couldn’t be happening. He couldn’t have lost Sans, too. He didn’t even say goodbye. He didn’t even get to tell him…
Dizzy with exhaustion, Grillby looked up at the phone again. On the bed next to it was a piece of paper, folded around something. Dragging himself to his feet, the bartender stumbled over, sinking to the ground again as he picked it up. A key fell into his lap. It was small and silver, and it looked old. The note it had been wrapped in had a drawing of the house, with an arrow pointing to something in the back. As Grillby’s gaze drifted down to the base of the drawing, he choked on another sob.
Hey Grillbz,
If you’re reading this, you probably did something stupid like go to my house by yourself with a homicidal psychopath on the loose. Don’t worry, I get it. You did this last time, too. Anyway, this go around, I’m not gonna be here when you show up.
That key you’ve got goes to a basement behind the house. Go in there. You’ll figure out for yourself where I’ve gone.
When you do, please don’t follow me.
I love you, Grillby. I’m sorry.
~Sans
Grillby read the note over and over, crying as the implications sank in. Whatever Sans was doing, it didn’t sound like he planned to come back. Well, if he thought that Grillby wasn’t going to go after him, he was dead wrong. But first… the bartender had to figure out where Sans was going.
It had taken a minute to get the door behind the house to open. The lock was old, and it stuck for a moment while Grillby jiggled the key to get it in. It finally swung open with an echoing creak, light from outside barely able to illuminate the inside of what looked to be a small home lab of some kind.
Grillby stepped inside, drawn to the large machine in the back. The damage to the odd machine and the char marks on the floor did nothing for Grillby’s anxiety, but the lack of dust around it at least assured him that it probably wasn’t the dangerous thing Sans had been alluding to. The fire monster stepped away from it, moving towards the desk and the piles of paper there. The first thing that caught his eye was a drawer slightly ajar, something inside reflecting the light that Grillby gave off. He opened it the rest of the way, immediately recognizing the badge inside as he picked it up. “This… This is the insignia of the royal scientist. Why would he have this?” Grillby mumbled out loud. Now that he was thinking about it, why would Sans have any of this? It didn’t make any sense. Sans was a sentry, and he had been the entire time Grillby knew him. The skeleton had never mentioned living in Hotland or having a scientific career. The bartender was starting to question how well he knew his best friend, setting the badge back in the drawer and turning to the papers.
The first page was written in some sort of font that Grillby couldn’t understand. Looking at it made his hurt, so he moved it to the side, skipping over it. The next page was thankfully readable. It described something called ‘DT’, and the effects it could have on a monster’s magic if infused properly. The records of the experiments had been partially burned, but most of what Grillby could read was too complicated for him to understand. He never thought Sans was dumb, but the complicated equations were far beyond anything Grillby had seen before. He hadn’t guessed Sans had that level of intelligence, or put that level of work into any one project.
The last few pages had the most burns out of all of them. Some sections were written in that headache-inducing language, with a lot of the notes Grillby could read seemingly added later. It looked like a comparison between the effectiveness of multiple attacks before and after the use of DT. The last few notes made Grillby burn lower, nearly going cold.
In conclusion, DT can be used to temporarily increase stamina and allow a monster to use their magic more effectively, summoning attacks and creating patterns like nothing seen before. However, drawing that level of magic from a monster’s soul can cause their soul to become unstable, tearing it apart. A monster could not withstand the effects of DT long-term without turning to dust.
I could handle it, just for a little while. If it came down to it, I could use the machine on myself and keep the kid from hurting anyone else.
Papyrus… Alphys… Grillby… 🕈︎✋︎☠︎☝︎👎︎✋︎☠︎☝︎💧︎… I’m so sorry.
“No,” Grillby whispered, his eyes widening in panic. “No, no no no no please tell me you didn’t- Sans-”
Sans was going to fight the human.
No matter the outcome, Sans was going to turn to dust.
Grillby ignored the sting of the rain as he sprinted through Waterfall. He didn’t have time to worry about his HP. Sans used that machine on himself. He’d managed to build it, surely he could reverse it if Grillby just reached him in time. His mind was reeling, trying to catch up with everything he learned. Sans had once been involved with the royal scientist. Was that how he knew Alphys? And what was with that strange handwriting? Why would Sans hide it from him? The rain didn’t bother Grillby this time, but he felt a sting in his soul as he realized just how little he knew about Sans. Everything he learned about him throughout their friendship… was it all a lie? Just a cover-up for whatever Sans had done in the past? It didn’t make sense. Nothing made sense anymore.
Grillby’s footsteps echoed in the corridors of New Home as he sprinted down the main path. Alphys had said that the human was in New Home somewhere, undoubtedly heading towards the castle. If Sans were to face them, it would be there. He only hoped he could reach him in time.
Sans fell backward as he felt the human’s blade slice through his ribcage. Looking down, he watched in distant shock as blood started to seep from the wound. He knew the whole battle had been pointless… Frisk would just load their save file each time they died, coming back over and over until they killed him… but it still felt so surreal. The fight was over. Sans lost.
“Heh… heh heh…” The skeleton laughed breathlessly to himself as he looked up. The human was expressionless, uncaring. How? How could they have so much apathy, after everyone they hurt?
It didn’t matter. Sans forced himself to his feet, coughing as blood dripped from his mouth. It would be fine. Frisk would reset, everyone would come back, and then they’d die again. The warm golds and oranges of the hall began to blur together as the bloodloss made Sans woozy and he stumbled, leaning against one of the pillars. If he closed his eyes…
He could almost pretend he was sitting at a familiar bar, the bartender smiling at him as he cracked jokes and drank from a ketchup bottle.
“Welp. I’m going to Grillby’s,” Sans said weakly, tears filling his eyes.
“Papyrus… do you want anything?”
Footsteps echoed in the final hallway as Grillby ran, desperation gripping his soul. He almost ran right past it. He skidded to a stop as his mind processed what he’d seen. His mind went empty and numb, and he turned around, walking a few paces back the way he’d come.
At the base of one of the pillars was a blue jacket, sitting in a pile of dust.
Grillby screamed.
No. No, it couldn’t end like this. The fire elemental fell to his knees and picked up Sans’s jacket, wailing as he held it to his chest. When he did- God, he was covered in dust. Sans’s dust. The thought made him drop the jacket and turn away, gagging and throwing up until there was nothing left.
Grillby wrapped his arms around himself, the humidity in the room increasing as he sobbed. He thought of Sans’s smile, his jokes and laughter, the way he always winked at the end of a bad pun. Was any of that even real? Did Sans enjoy being around Grillby, or was it all a façade? Grief and betrayal settled heavily over the bartender, threatening to drown him. He dry-heaved again, choking as he desperately fought for air.
I love you, Grillby.
Grillby... I’m so sorry.
The words washed over him, pushing those feelings away. It didn’t matter. Whoever Sans had been before, it didn’t change what the two of them had. Grillby wouldn’t let it.
Grillby picked up Sans’s jacket as he stood, shaking the dust off and putting it on. The heat in the room became sweltering as the fire monster was filled with rage. That human... that human had taken so much from him. His friends, his family... the skeleton he loved. They couldn’t get away with it. He wouldn’t let them.
The fire monster walked towards the end of the hall, eyes burning with murderous rage. That human was going to pay for what they-
The world stuttered.
Grillby hummed to himself as he wiped down his bar, getting ready to open for the day. Hm, that was strange. Lifting the cloth, he noticed that it had quickly gotten fairly dirty. There was dust all over Grillby’s hands, coming off on the towel. He shrugged to himself as he wiped them off and got another towel.
It was probably nothing.
Thanks for reading! This one accidentally turned out kind of long. It’s pretty stream-of-consciousness, but I’m too busy to edit it today and I’m too eager to post it to wait.

The thing about Undertale that intrigues me the most is that every character is both likeable and dislikeable. None of the characters are entirely bad, but none of them are entirely good, either.
I can hear you shouting, "But Toriel! What about Toriel? Goat Mom did nothing wrong!" Well... Toriel is, imho, the most unambiguously good character in all of Undertale, with the possible exception of the Human Child. She's unceasingly kind and generous, it's almost impossible for her to kill you in her boss fight, and she desires nothing more than your safety. Going off that last point, though, I find Toriel is a lot like Marlin from Finding Nemo. She's overprotective to a comical extreme. Of course, there's a good reason for this behavior. When I first played the game, though, I found her mollycoddling excessive, to the point where I was almost grateful to leave her behind and escape through the basement! Not that I don't love her, because I do, she's so sweet and funny, and I felt horrible when I accidentally killed her; but Toriel has flaws, and she's not just a one-note maternal figure. And that makes her no less loveable. (Side note: Toby Fox originally planned to have you kill Toriel at the end of the Ruins. He changed his mind and created the SPARE system instead. But I wonder if Toriel was intentionally made smothering to make it easier to off her?)
I'm not gonna discuss Flowey because we all know why he sucks, and I can't say anything that hasn't already been said about his good side.
Papyrus, Papyrus, Papyrus... I love this stupid skeleton himbim. (Why is he a himbim, do you ask? Well, he fits the himbo criteria, but literal skeleton-bodied individuals cannot be considered traditionally handsome.) If he wasn't "pure of heart, dumb of ***", he would be utterly obnoxious. Case in point: his egoism. Papyrus thinks he's the greatest. However, what makes him so lovable is that he thinks everyone else is also the greatest (the "pure of heart" aspect), and that he's really not that great (the "dumb of ***" aspect). Papyrus can be grating and loud and all that, and yet everybody loves him. I have yet to hear tell of anyone who dislikes Papyrus. (Is it because he's probably neurodivergent?) It's interesting how we as a fandom don't really discuss the downsides of Toriel and Papyrus. (Again, not that I don't love them! I do!)
Ah, sans. Finally some good comic relief character. He's a very nicely three-dimensional character. I'm no expert on him, but I will say that his depression doesn't completely excuse him from inaction. There's enough talk about sans to fill a novel or two so I'd suggest consulting another source for more info.
Undyne. Probably the first character (aside from Flowey) whom you truly view as a bad guy. And she has her bad side for sure. She's one of only two Normal Route bosses who will not hesitate to kill you. (Asgore never kills you unless your health is at 1 point.) I understand why she's justifying killing you, a small, possibly harmless child, because she thinks it's the only way to free her people and doesn't have any reason to believe otherwise. But, still. I will say that she's the most human of all the monsters (again, besides Flowey) in that she exhibits the most traits of one: DETERMINATION and cruelty.
Okay full disclaimer I believe that Alphys did nothing wrong and I love her and would die for her BUT. But. My friend has argued for why she kind of sucks, and (though it pains me) I don't disagree. Alphys is basically anxiety given bodily form, and she embodies all the negative parts of anxiety, too. Like the Avoidance Spiral. She screws up, she's afraid of what'll happen if people find out, she hides it, people start getting concerned, she's even more afraid, she avoids it, the problem gets worse, she continues to push it away until the problem has grown too big for her to handle but she refuses to let anyone else help her because having other people know she failed is the last thing she wants. The Avoidance Spiral sucks. And with a problem this major, too; no wonder she contemplates and possibly commits suicide. (Interesting side note: the two Normal route bosses who show you the least mercy are the two who, when killed, lead to Alphys's death.) Also, she manipulates the Human Child without a second thought and never apologizes for it. That's, uh, not great. She needs therapy badly. (Another side note: Alphys is the best-handled instance of mentally ill quasi-villainy in video games I can think of. The only others I can think of are Nathan Prescott and Josh Washington so the bar is not high but I digress. Fun Fact: all those games were released in 2015!)
Mettaton has the most unambiguously rotten personality of the bunch (yet again, aside from Flowey). He's breathtakingly self-absorbed, neglected his own cousin, and is downright abusive to his employees. What redeeming traits does he have? Well, uh... he's a loyal friend to Alphys? Ok yeah that's all I can think of. He's extremely entertaining, though, which is probably why more people don't hate him.
Yes, I know, Asgore is a war criminal, but he's also very soft. And I think that sums him up pretty thoroughly. (Asgore: I have done many things wrong in my life, often. Me: I know this, and I love you.)
TL;DR none of the Undertale characters are perfect, and it's not entirely hard to find a reason to want one or the other of them dead. Does that go against the message of the game? Very much so. Does it make the characters any less lovable? Not at all. Should we give more thought to them all being so lovable despite their flaws? Ab-so-lutely.

Tonight's Overly Emo Undertale/Deltarune Thought:
in a weird way, both spamton and alphys make me feel less afraid of failure, because their stories both take some of the threat out of the idea of hitting rock bottom in different ways.
alphys made a horrible mistake, and never forgave herself. she kept worsening the situation by hiding the people she accidentally hurt in her basement, refusing to reach out to anyone for help because she felt unlovable and like someone who could only ever hurt. she must have felt so trapped, to the point where she saw ending her own life as the only way out! but she kept on persisting. with the support of her friends, she eventually found the courage to confront herself and let the amalgamates go home. she's ready to face the world, taking the only step she can: the next.
on the other hand, spamton crashed and burned after losing every source of support in his life and receiving this massive revelation that he wasn't equipped to deal with. by the time we meet him, he's lost everything and has been reduced to a semi-coherent mess living in the trash, much like alphys. although in his case, it's not by choice- like almost everything else in his life. his ultimate fate, no matter which route you choose, sucks for him. he's creepy and desperate and screams in ads every other minute, but in spite of that, we care deeply about him and empathize with his misfortune.
all that is to say, i love dr. alphys because if she can pull herself out from the deepest hole of guilt and mistakes and self-loathing and grow and love and be loved as the amazing little lizard that she is, than surely i can too! and i love spamton because he reminds me that even if i wind up in a bad place that i can't escape from, even if my story doesn't have a happy ending, there are people who love me and who feel for me. thank you, undertale and deltarune, your dump dwellers mean so much to me.

Alright, I'll bite. What sort of King is Eret here? And what manner of monster?
Sorry this took so long!  I had too much fun writing this post and it’s super long now.  Oops.
(I made a couple of posts about a Dream SMP Undertale AU)
If you’re good at reading between the lines this post contains major spoilers for Undertale. I know the game has been out for ages, but if you care, block the tag "Dream SMP Undetale AU"
IRL Eret is very fond of ferrets and flamingos, and they're very cool animals, but they aren’t that intimidating for a monster design.  But Eret also likes bears (their stuffed bear Ted is their unofficial channel mascot) and that's definitely boss-monster material.  So I think Eret would be a bear monster of some kind, just for the sheer intimidation factor.
I think Eret would be a good king, policy-wise.  They'd do their best to bring hope to the Underground, and they wouldn't be the one collecting human souls in this AU, that's someone else who is well-known for killing people (:  As for how people perceive them, and how they got there...  Welllll...
Eret wasn't the first King, that title goes to Wilbur, who was the King when the War of Humans And Monsters happened.  Eret was loyal back then, but that loyalty wavered when the monsters lost the war, and it fell apart when the realities of living underground made the other monsters restless and bitter.  Many people blamed Wilbur for losing.  Eret did too, and became very outspoken against him.
Dream took advantage of Eret's anger, poisoning his mind and feeding his resentment, and encouraged them to challenge Wilbur to a duel for the crown, telling them they'd be a much better king than he is. (:  Eret challenged Wilbur, but the duel was not to the death, it was points based, though of course with all duels the chance of death is there.  Eret won without killing him, though, and Wilbur gave them the crown.  He was naturally extremely upset about being dethroned, but otherwise everything was fine.
Until Wilbur ended up murdered the next day.  The first suspect was Eret but there was no actual evidence who the culprit was, since monsters turn to dust after death and there weren't any witnesses.  Eret's reputation is damaged, faith in their leadership shaken.
The Player arrives in Cogchamp (the Ruins) after their initial meeting with Dream is interrupted by Fundy before Dream can kill them.  Fundy tries to talk to him, but he just runs away, claiming that the situation is "too awkward."  The player learns that Fundy is living there to escape the emotional turmoil of losing his father and his doubts that Eret isn't as innocent as he claims.  Fundy misses Eret very much, wondering if they were alright after he left, and saying that he wants to go fishing with them when he goes back, like he and Wilbur used to.
Fundy gives us some lore about Dream.  Fundy stopped being friends with him after Dream got very suddenly "too Weirdchamp" about everything. Fundy says he's seen Dream with a human who fell down before, but he never saw the human again, even though he looked all over. Dream denied it when he asked.
Fundy also fills the role of acquainting the Player with game mechanics, though he's much more chaotic and prankish, and the Player becomes his friend.  He tries to prevent the Player from leaving Cogchamp because he's lonely, but ultimately relents because he knows he can’t bring himself to hurt someone who was nice to him.  Unless it's a Genocide Route, in which Fundy doesn't try to fight the Player, and instead flees to the rest of the Underground, to warn Eret and the other monsters. </3
But this post is about Eret, I'm getting sidetracked here.
Everyone else's reactions to current events is mixed.  Some monsters like Hbomb and Puffy stubbornly believe that Eret didn’t kill Wilbur, others like Purpled are just upset that they felt the need to overthrow him in the first place.  The Sleepy Bois want them dead for killing their family, and are planning to assassinate them.
Niki is the closest to Eret, and talks about them the most.  She talks about how they were her emotional rock during the War, and that though they're still good friends, she's seen less and less of them lately, and they don't smile as much anymore.
Despite how things turned out, Eret still tries their best to be a good King, and bring people hope.  Whenever the Player goes to a new area and finds a new box for items, they always find a piece of "you matter <3 - Eret" item inside that grants temporary defense.  Eret also built a lot of important public facilities in the Underground outside of Cogchamp, like a museum in which the Player learns of Wilbur’s heroism in the War of Humans And Monsters.  They also built several bridges and an aquarium for monsters in Waterfall (because of the water level problems Waterfall is having).
Much like Asgore, the Player's opinion of Eret is based entirely on what others have to say about them. The Player might feel strongly that they're too nice to have done something like this, and something else is going on, or that Eret definitely could have killed Wilbur and the Sleepy Bois are right to seek justice for a wrong that has been committed.
Boss Battles:
For Eret's boss fight in the Genocide Route...  Oh boy.
Eret’s fight isn't as difficult as Technoblade’s would be, but it’s difficult because you can't damage Eret in the beginning.  In spite of Eret's protests, Niki comes to try to protect them, shielding Eret from all damage until you kill her.  Then Eret goes into a sorrow-fueled rage and enters into "No-one Knows" mode, removing their sunglasses.  They use their last words to beg the Player to find enough mercy in their heart to Spare Fundy.
The last person the Player kills in the Genocide run is indeed Fundy, who Eret was hiding in the Castle.  It's not a fight, it's just murder.  It's very sad.
Before the boss fight in the Neutral Route, we're privy to a conversation between Eret and Ghostbur, in which Ghostbur comes to visit the castle. Eret tells Ghostbur they're sorry for everything they've done, and that taking his place was the biggest mistake of their life.  Ghostbur claims other people say they killed him, and asks if Eret did.  Eret avoids the question, stating that they've already told Wilbur the truth about what happened many times, there's no point if he can’t remember.  Ghostbur presses the question, stating that even if he'll forget later, he'd like to know, because he does remember being Eret's friend, and he's worried about them.  The Player is noticed before Eret can answer him.
Eret fights the Player alone.  Eret admits to the Player that they should probably be a good sport and just die, they don’t want to hurt a child, but they know the Player needs their soul to leave, and they're too afraid of death not to try and fight.
When they lose, they lament that things turned out this way because they thought they could do a better job than Wilbur, and that they can't seem to do anything right as a King or a mentor to Fundy.  They try to give up their soul to the Player, who spares them.
Only for Dream to kill them, steal the soul, and destroy it.  Because he's Dream.  Dream also reveals to the Player that he was the one who killed Wilbur, because the underground is boring and he needs entertainment. He's been collecting human souls, not to destroy the barrier with, but to become God.  Dream goes Photoshop Flowey Mode and fights the Player.
Pacifist Route:
After completing the Neutral route and starting the Pacifist Route, the Player is pointed in toward Eret's castle basement by Dream.  The Player discovers a Necromancy Lair (a creepy equivalent to the True Lab in Dr. Alphy's house) with the Wilbur resurrection shrine in it.  Once the Player finds the scattered pages torn out of Eret’s diary, it's revealed that Eret suspects Dream killed Wilbur, but they have no proof.  The diary talks about how Ghostbur was the result of a secret project by Eret, their failure to revive Wilbur.  Their diary also informs us that Dream often comes to torment them about this, taunting them about they'd just made things worse.  Eret questions whether or not to step down as King, but wonders who would be able to take responsibility, since Prince Fundy is missing.
The Player also finds a book by someone named "Callahan" about dreamon summoning that Eret was researching (and deemed too dangerous to use, due to the warnings within).
In the final fight against Dream, the Player can Save Eret by giving them pink wool, and reminding them that they matter to Fundy, Niki and the Player.
At the end of the Pacifist run, Eret and Fundy reconcile.  Eret crowns Fundy King, and declares that this is how it should have been from the beginning.  IDK if Wilbur is revived or not, depends on how bittersweet of an ending I want, maybe Ghostbur just has their memories restored without bringing them back to life?  But during the end credits, the three of them can be seen fishing together.

The True Nature of Deltarune
Tumblr media
Deltarune Chapter 1 has been out for over a year now, and being the big UT/DR fan that I am, I’ve been slowly mulling over both games, reading many fan theories and putting together my own interpretation of what I believe the nature and goal of Deltarune will be. This will be a long one so grab some popcorn, put on your matpat hats and click to keep reading!
So what is Deltarune? Is it a sequel to Undertale? Is it a prequel? Is it an alternate universe? Is it the coming of age story of a bunch of teens? Is it a complex meta-narrative on the nature of video games?
The answer is yes to all of the above. And to begin delving into this we must first understand the creator of this game: Toby Fox.
Tumblr media
I won’t toot Toby’s Fox’s horn too much, we all know how talented and hardworking he is, but he’s also very emotionally perceptive and empathic. His general disposition is reminiscent of avant-garde artists that push the boundaries of artistic creation in a medium.
Toby loves mysteries, and in the early version of Undertale there was an included file that disparaged hackers and went on to say that it’s difficult to add mysteries in games these days due to data miners and such.
Tumblr media
Thankfully, this did not stop Toby from lovingly adding quite a few big mysteries to Undertale that have yet to be resolved. Knowing Toby and his strong desire to share his story, a story that according to him, kept him awake at night:
“For the past 3 years I've been waking up in the middle of the night unable to go back to sleep because I've been thinking about the scenes that happen in the game. Even though so many details are still hazy, I really want to show you the things I've been thinking about. That's really my only reason for making this game. If I don't show you what I'm thinking, I'll lose my mind.“
I don’t believe Toby will let these mysteries go unanswered, and it is here that we can begin to understand what Deltarune is about.
The Mystery of W.D. Gaster
Tumblr media
Truly, the biggest mystery of Undertale is that of W.D. Gaster: former royal scientist, creator of the CORE and the Determination Extraction machine.
A player can go through the entirety of Undertale multiple times and never even hear word of Gaster’s existence. This is because all the events that pertain to him are hidden behind a value in the game’s files known as the “FUN value”. Outside of actually manipulating this file manually yourself, it is, to the average player, random. The FUN value can trigger multiple different events throughout the game, some of which include running into “Followers of Gaster” or even Gaster himself.
Tumblr media
While the latter has nothing to say before he “boings” out of existence, the former Followers all tell an eerie tale of a scientist who fell into his own creation and was scattered across time and space.
But hold on. Time and space? Why does that sound familiar?
Ah yes, during the Sans battle he speaks about an “massive anomaly in the timespace continuum”.
Tumblr media
And during this battle Sans says a lot of other cryptic things without context, for example, he laments not being able to “go back” somewhere. But where or when is he referring to?
Tumblr media
He mentions how he and others were monitoring time-lines and their readings showed them stopping and starting, jumping left and right, and eventually ending. Who was he monitoring these readings with? This all seems incredibly scientific and sci-fi, I thought Sans was just a silly skeleton, is he some kind of time cop? (he does have a “badge” in his workshop) He also uses skeletal weapons known as “Gaster Blasters”.
Tumblr media
What…? Gaster Blaster?
Okay, now we KNOW Sans DEFINITELY has some connection to this mysterious scientist W.D. Gaster, but what? Well, for starters W.D. Gaster is short for Wing Dings Gaster, a type of font that he also speaks in.
Tumblr media
Who else is named after and speaks in specific font types? Sans and Papyrus of course!
Tumblr media
Furthermore, in the concept sketches for Papyrus, Toby wrote and redacted parts of a message that says: “has a brother named comic sans and a [BLANK] named [BLANK]”.
Tumblr media
Who is this mysterious redacted person and what is their relationship to Sans and Papyrus? The easy money is on a family member, and for sake of argument lets use the prediction most of the fandom has already concluded and accepted: that Sans and Papyrus have a father named Gaster.
So Sans and Papyrus have a long lost father that was a scientist. This explanation would begin to explain why Sans has a weapon named after him, and why he wanted to “go back” to some place or time, perhaps in an effort to save him from his fate.
There’s a hidden event in Undertale where if you reset after listening to Sans speak about LOVE and EXP in a pacifist route, and initiate the conversion a couple of times in a row, he’ll catch on by the expression your face that you’ve heard it before and will surmise that you’re a time traveller and give you secret code words to tell his past self.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This will lead to him giving you the key to his room which ends up just being a prank at first.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But then you find a key to the secret workshop/basement hidden behind his house.
Tumblr media
Once you enter the workshop, you’ll find some blueprints written in symbols you can’t read (wing dings?) and a curtain covering a machine that doesn’t seem to be working, among other things.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Toby Fox tweeted a message regarding this machine a few days after Undertale’s release around the time people were figuring out FUN values and the secrets surrounding Sans and Gaster.
Tumblr media
“You’ve all seen the happiest outcome. Neither of them could fix the machine, no matter how hard they tried. No one can.”
This tweet seems to imply that if the machine could be fixed that Undertale could have a happier outcome.
And this my friends, is the gateway to the nature of Deltarune.
Tumblr media
Deltarune, according to Toby Fox, is a game for players that have completed Undertale. But what does it mean to complete Undertale, and I mean, TRULY complete it? Toby often expressed that he wasn’t happy with how people told others how to play the game, that it is best played completely blind. Having played Undertale blind myself, and having watched others do the same, the natural way the game is meant to progress is that first players will experience the Neutral Ending, followed by the Pacifist Ending, and Finally the Genocide ending. This is because the game cruelly plays against your expectations of how an RPG should work and this almost guarantees that you will kill at least one monster your first play through. As if the fact that the fight button is always the default position in battle isn’t enough, in the early parts of the game you are told that you may need to weaken a monster before you can spare them. This naturally brings to mind the systems of Pokémon, where you have the best chance to catch a Pokémon if it’s at low health. Well, if you try this during the Toriel fight, as most do, you’ll find that as soon as you get close to critical health, you’ll instantly kill her.
Tumblr media
Poor goat mama..
Difficulty-wise, the neutral route is the most easy, because you can level up a little and gain more HP. The Pacifist route is a bit harder because your HP is lower, but with the experience you gain from the previous route, it should prove no problem. Finally the Genocide route is the most difficult because it takes a concerted effort that implies knowledge of the previous routes to kill every single monster.
So an ideal Deltarune player has knowledge of all three main routes of Undertale, and may have experienced or heard of Gaster.
Is this player you? If so, ask yourself, what would a “happier outcome” look like to you? And be honest. Many fans in the Undertale community have already answered this question in the form of fanworks. Some of the most common elements among them are as follows:

1) Frisk and all the monsters are free from the Underground and living on the surface with humans.
2) Asriel is revived.
3) Gaster is revived.
4 )Chara is revived.
The revival of Asriel, Chara, and Gaster are the undisputed holy grails in terms of happiest endings that the UT community dreams of and creates endless fan works to explore the possibilities. Toby knows this well.
Using a speech pattern attributed to Gaster, Toby teased the release of Deltarune Chapter 1
Tumblr media
“I LOOK FORWARD TO CREATING A NEW FUTURE WITH YOU.” stands out quite a bit to me as the prospect of a “happier outcome” is already tied to Gaster and Sans, now a “new future” is connected.
And when Deltarune released, and fans had a chance to play it, they found:
1) All the monsters are free and living on the surface.
Tumblr media
2) Asriel is alive and well and living his best life.
Tumblr media
3) A voice with the same speech pattern as Gaster (based on Japanese text) brought you to this world and attempted to give your own vessel before…
Tumblr media
4)…a voice with the same speech pattern as Chara (also based on Japanese text) discarded it.
Tumblr media
Right off the bat Toby seems to have given fans what they wanted, a perfect future ending. But as you continue to play, you begin to realize that this may not be the world you dreamed of.
First, while all the monsters are living on the surface, they aren’t the same people from Undertale, for example: Undyne has never met Alphys, and the amalgamates that went to live with their families at the end of Undertale are deceased in this world. And while Asriel is alive, it’s not THE Asriel we were so determined to save in Undertale.
Gaster’s presence permeates Deltarune so thoroughly it would take awhile to point out every example, but it seems clear that he’s present in some form.
And Chara? You only need to see the ending cutscene of chapter 1 to know that they are around in a similar fashion as when they possess Frisk in the True Pacifist after a Genocide ending.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But their presence is also present in subtle ways. For example, if you attempt to play the piano in the hospital in Hometown and then speak to the receptionist, she comments that Kris’ playing isn’t the same as usual (Likely due to our control), but it seems that Chara may be good at piano. Interestingly, on the cover artwork for the official Undertale Piano Collection 2 book, Frisk can be seen holding a knife playing a key on a piano in the judgement hall filled with bones.
Tumblr media
So for better or worse, what appears to be the original Chara and Gaster from Undertale are present in Deltarune, in some meta form or another. And maybe that’s the key: “Meta-characters”. After all, you yourself as a player are a “Meta-character”. You can ask the inhabitants of this new world questions that only someone with knowledge of a True Pacifist route would have, such as being able to ask Undyne about Alphys. Asking her this only makes sense if you yourself completed a True Pacifist route before playing Deltarune.
Ralsei, the lonely prince.
Tumblr media
Toby being the trickster dog he is, he didn’t just give us 1 Asriel and call it a day, no he gave us 2.
Ralsei is quite clearly meant to be a version of Asriel because not only do they have similar or identical dialogues, but he was also was meant to look more like him before Toby decided to give him his Black Mage look.
Tumblr media
There are even strong parallels obviously meant to create an emotional response and connect Ralsei to the feelings people had for Asriel in Undertale by giving the players the option to hug him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ralsei is quite the mystery on his own. And while he’s most certainly sweet and lovable, there’s undeniably some disconcerting things about him such as:
-Why does he know Kris and Susie’s names?
-Who did he learn the prophecy from? “Foretold by time and space” isn’t a good answer (or is it?).
-What did he say to Kris when the player SOUL wasn’t present in the prison?
-When he’s KO’d in battle, what does he become? Apparently he can still eat to regain HP when in this shrunken form.
Tumblr media
Ralsei seemed to be under the impression that violence wasn’t needed in this world, but upon nearly being defeated by the King after mistakenly healing him, Ralsei says “This isn’t a world where kindness always wins, is it?”
Tumblr media
The way he says this seems to imply he knows of other worlds and that they have different rules. Perhaps he comes from a world where someone being kind to everyone they met had great results?
There are definitely things that Ralsei is not telling us, whether this means he’s up to no good will remain to be seen, however, I would like to take this opportunity to make a prediction based on the previous understanding that the original Chara and Gaster are present in this new world in meta forms, and assert that Undertale Asriel, the final piece of the perfect ending puzzle is present in Deltarune in his own meta-character form of Ralsei. Perhaps the form he shrinks into when KO’d is one we know well...
Tumblr media
There is that unused Flowey face...
Tumblr media
Add glasses and a hat and...
Tumblr media
but that’s just a game theory!
And I can't help but wonder about the dark heart on Ralsei's chest and this merchandise in the Deltarune section of fangamer that specifically features a quote from Undertale about the prophecy of Delta Rune (that turns out to be about Asriel in the TP ending, and Chara in the Genocide ending) "There is a prophecy. The Angel... The One Who Has Seen The Surface... They will return. And the underground will go empty."
Tumblr media
It's also the Deltarune game logo
Tumblr media
Because the merchandise is called Darkheart, it made me immediately think of the dark heart on Ralsei's chest, and having an Undertale quote about Asriel/Chara makes it all the more mysterious...
Regardless, in just the first chapter of Deltarune, the elements of the “happier outcome” connected to Sans’ machine are present. But how do they all connect? Well, let’s look at the other characters in Deltarune, starting with:
Lancer
Tumblr media
Oh Baby Santa Claus, how we love you so. It’s hard to overlook how similar Lancer is to Sans. They’re both hilarious in their own way, both ride bikes, have similar color-schemes, both have a love for tomato-based products, and both have some scientific/engineering affinity (Sans and his workshop, Lancer and his “Lancer Industries”).
But that’s not all, the door to Sans’ room is identical to the warp doors found in the Dark World that Lancer hails from, and Sans’ warp ability also makes the same sound effect as these doors as well.
Tumblr media
Lancer is a member of the FUN gang (remember the FUN value?), that, as far as we know currently, has 3 other members besides himself: Kris, Ralsei, and Susie (with the possibility of Noelle and others in the future).
Speaking of Susie, her name (or a version of it) popped up in Undertale prior to Deltarune’s release when the game was released on the Switch. By speaking to the Gaster Follower “Clamgirl”, you can learn of a girl named “Suzy”, that you will meet her soon, and that “in life’s grand scheme, she might be why you came here in the first place...”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Upon receiving this dialogue, checking the drawers in Sans workshop will reveal a card with a drawing of 3 people smiling and the words “don’t forget”.
Tumblr media
“Don’t Forget” is the vocal theme of Deltarune sung by Laura Shigihara, and the melody from the ending verse,“Don’t forget, I’m with you in the dark.”, is leitmotifed throughout the entire Deltarune chapter 1 OST. The connections between Sans, the FUN gang, Gaster, and by extension Undertale and Deltarune are quite apparent. Perhaps the actions of the FUN gang in the Deltarune world will have an affect on the FUN value in Undertale.
Based on all the evidence we have now, I am going to make a bold prediction:
Lancer is literally a younger Sans.
That’s right, Toby Fox made Baby Sans before Disney and Sega made Baby Yoda and Baby Sonic.
Deltarune’s Dark World is the past from the perspective of Sans and Gaster (or a recreation of it). How Lancer becomes Sans will likely be a very large part of Deltarune’s narrative, and once he becomes Sans, he will exist as a separate meta entity that can traverse different worlds, even if versions of himself already exist in some form there (similar to Ralsei and Asriel).
We’ve seen that if characters are exposed to elements that make it clear they live in a video game world, whether this be Determination for humans and Flowey, a time-space accident for Gaster, or a strange man whispering to Jevil, these characters become something wholly different, more powerful, and begin to become more similar to players with the ability to SAVE, RESET, or use abilities that seem beyond the scope of the game (e.g. Photoshop Flowey, Jevil’s ability to speak, etc). Undertale and Deltarune are video games about video games.
So if it is to be believed that Gaster is Sans’ father, and that Lancer is a younger Sans, then it stands to logical reason that whoever Lancer’s father is, that they must be Gaster.
Tumblr media
No, not the King, there is another. A “Lesser-dad”.
Tumblr media
Yes, Rouxls Kaard.
“GOD DAMNIT”
Rouxls Kaard, or “Rules Card”, or if you rearrange his name “A Dark Soul Rx”, wait, Rx as in prescription? As in a doctor? Dark Soul as in Mr. Darkness Gaster himself? Too much of a stretch? Maybe. Although you can’t deny they have similar appearances.
If Rouxls Kaard is Gaster, and therefore the father of Sans and Papyrus, then he’s undeniably similar to one of his sons. Rouxls Kaard seems to be quite passionate about puzzles, (despite not having a natural predilection to them). I could see Papyrus gaining an affinity for puzzles by being raised by such an individual, they both have quite flamboyant personalities. And let’s not forget that there are also hints that Rouxls Kaard may be inclined to creating scientific devices such as the “Control Crowne” he uses to control K.Round.
Tumblr media
Hmm, controlling other people… sounds familiar to what we the player are doing to Kris… and who was it that was initially going to give us control of a vessel before we lost said control to Chara’s intervention? Control seems to play a big part in Deltarune doesn’t it?
Also, isn’t his manner of speech is reminiscent of a silly ye olde knight. Wait, wasn’t there a Knight causing trouble in the Dark World? Hm.
So something is going to turn Lancer and Rouxls Kaard into Sans and Gaster, respectively.
Now remember the CORE that Gaster built? This one?
Tumblr media
It turns geothermal energy into magical electricity via an unknown means with one of the byproducts being ozone, which is corrosive and could potentially make someone very melty. This is what it looks like on the inside.
Tumblr media
Lots of blues of varying hues with white accents. Kinda reminds me of Rouxls Kaard and the other “card” people’s color schemes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What a coincidence! Oh and apparently the layout of the CORE can be re-arranged or something:
"I work at the CORE. The inside is a maze made of swappable parts... That means we can shuffle the layout at will." - Hotland NPC
Almost sounds like a sliding puzzle…
Tumblr media
Finally, Gaster is referred to as “The man who speaks in hands”, likely due to his Wing Dings font that contains a lot of hand symbols, however, it isn’t a stretch to also apply that epithet to Rouxls Kaard, after all, the Rules Card speaks in hands as well. Hands of cards.
Susie
Tumblr media
Can’t forget Susie. Unfortunately, there’s not much we can say about how her role in all this will play yet. If we are to believe that the “Suzy” that Clamgirl references is Susie, then it’s clear that she’ll be key, perhaps as a catalyst for all the big changes some characters will need to undergo...
I will say that I think it’s interesting that toby specifically has a character in Hometown comment that humans are made of blood (and implying the monsters are not),
Tumblr media
and Susie says:
Tumblr media
“Everybody bleeds, right?”
From our understanding of monsters in Undertale, monsters don’t bleed, they turn to dust. But, maybe Darkners can bleed. If we believe Sans is a Darkner, it may explain this:
Tumblr media
It could be ketchup. It could be a Darkner thing. Lancer does mention blood casually. But if only humans and Darkners bleed, then why would a monster like Susie say “everybody bleeds”?
Tumblr media
So what is Deltarune you ask? I think it’s:
1) A story about Sans, Papyrus, and Gaster’s past and future. We get to experience their past in the Dark World, and speak with their future selves in the Light World. But these future versions of Sans and Papyrus may not be as far into the future as the Sans and Papyrus we meet in Undertale. Remember, Sans had an Ice-E’s crossword in Undertale? Ice-E’s-P’E’zza is a restaurant in Hometown. Papyrus may also be younger than he was in Undertale because Sans, an adult who runs a grocery store, thinks a teen like Kris should hang with his little brother, and it would be “weird” if he were there with them.
2) A story about post-Undertale Asriel, Chara, and Gaster. Asriel/Flowey maintains his new form as Ralsei thanks to the power of the Dark Fountain. He now lives in what is/was Sans’ childhood home. Whether he knows this or remembers the events of Undertale is unknown, but it is my belief that he holds a deep connection to the Asriel we all wished to save. Chara resides within Kris in a similar manner as they did at the ending of a UT True Pacifist Ending after surrendering the red SOUL to them in a Genocide ending. Does this mean that Kris’s body or “vessel” is Frisk? This seems to be heavily implied by Kris’ outfit taking on the same color scheme as Frisk’s UT shirt while in the Dark World.
3) A coming of age story for a bunch of teens. Kris, Susie, Ralsei, Noelle, Lancer, and all the friends that may join on their adventures are still people regardless of what grand meta narrative is at play involving the nature of their reality. They still need to go to school, fall in love, and worry about growing up and going to university. Noelle will undoubtedly play a large role with Toby’s tease of her as “Lost Girl”, and considering how attached most of the community has already gotten to these characters, it hurts my heart to think about what may befall them as they try their best to live their lives. Does this mean Deltarune’s world is doomed? I hope not... but those save file screens sure are creepypasta...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“IT WAS AS IF IT WAS NEVER THERE AT ALL.”
4) A story about video games and the control (or lack thereof) we have over them. It’s quite clear that we, the player controlling the red soul, is able to influence this new world based on knowledge from Undertale that should have no barring. For example, we can name “Onionsan” who has forgot their own name. One of the options is “Onion”, but why? Is it because we know their name is Onionsan in Undertale? How do we even know if that is actually what this version of them is really named?
Deltarune is so close to the perfect Undertale ending we wanted, but it’s just a little bit wrong. Would it hurt to force Undyne and Alphys to meet and fall in love? To get Toriel and Asgore back together? To make Bratty and Catty friends? If you were given the option in game to do it, would you do it? What if it made their lives worse…? I believe that the fact we are able to influence inhabitants of Deltarune with our Undertale knowledge may have some unforeseen consequences, and perhaps, be what begins this whole situation in the first place. (Paradoxes are the best time travel stories!)
Toby Fox said that Deltarune was the game he originally wanted to make, but whether it was too ambitious or time consuming, his idea evolved into Undertale. Now that he’s creating the game he always wanted to, I believe that he will connect everything we know about them together and resolve the mysteries, after all, Gaster has been waiting for this chance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And maybe, with a little luck and determination, we can create a new future with a happier outcome. If I’ve learned anything from Undertale, it’s that you must hold on to your hopes and dreams, because dreams are the goal of “Determination.”

Chapter 4
"W-w-well, th-that was fun, w-wasn't it Frisk?" Alphys wrung her claws and laughed nervously.
    "Absolutely! Same time next week?"
"S-Sure! I-I'll start looking for n-new shows t-too... that way w-we don't r-run out," Her mouth jerked up in the crooked fashion that always made everyone around her smile too, "W-Well, see you s-soon, then. Bye, F-Frisk!" The lab doors slid shut, and Frisk was left on her own. She turned away, and sprinted towards the place where she knew the River Person would be waiting.
~
"Tra la la. The water is very dry today." Frisk's mouth twitched up at the River Person's strange ramblings. They never really made any sense, and today was no exception. How could water be dry, anyway? And earlier, on the way to Hotland, they'd said something about needing to have worn a few million more pairs of pants. Frisk had learned not to read into them too much, although occasionally they gave some useful advice amid the rambles. Frisk settled down and watched the fields of Echo Flowers go by.
    Then the boat stopped unexpectedly.
    "River Person? This isn't Snowdin..."
"Tra la la. The walls prevent our passage." They gestured towards the water, and Frisk walked towards the front of the boat to take a look. Sure enough, there was something blocking the river. It appeared as though there'd been an avalanche of sorts, and now the river was full of boulders.
"Oh well. I can always walk. I'll just text Paps and tell him why I'm late." She moved to leave the boat when the River Person reached out and grabbed her tight by the shoulder.
"Tra la la. Beware of the man who came from the other world." Frisk's eyebrows wrinkled. The River Person sounded perfectly serious, with almost none of the usual lightness to their tone.
    "I'm sorry, I don't..."
"Tra la la. Beware of the man who speaks in hands." This time they sounded urgent, and almost panicked. Frisk backed away and stepped carefully out of the boat, frightened by this change of character.
"A-alright. I will." The River Person nodded, and pushed away from the shore.
~
"Hiya, Frisk!" Monster Kid ran up beside Frisk almost immediately after she'd been dropped off by the small bird. "Suzy and I are just going to visit Onionsan. Wanna come?"
Frisk forced a smile "Sorry, I can't, I have to get home. Maybe next time?" It wasn't that Frisk didn't like Monster Kid, she really did! He just made her a little... uncomfortable. Suzy, the girl he had mentioned, was Monster Kid's sister. And she didn't exist. Monster Kid thought she was real, but Frisk had never met her. When she asked why, she was told that for his entire life, Monster Kid had always claimed to have a sister named Susan, or "Suzy" for short. They thought he'd grow out of it, but he never did.
"Aw, okay. See you later!" Monster Kid ran off, and Frisk fought off tears.
~
Frisk glanced at her watch. 5:45.
"Shoot" She started to run. She had to be home by 6 to help with dinner. And... she had an eerie feeling, as though something was off. The River Person was nervous, and what was up with that avalanche? Then, she slowed down, and stopped. Was the hallway to the crystallized cheese save point always this long? Her eyes scanned the hall, and she resisted the urge to turn around and run back to Undyne's house.
That's when she spotted the door. It was crooked, grey, and strangely tall and skinny.
    And it called to her.
Frisk's left foot moved forward reluctantly. Then, her right. She tried to resist, to stop walking towards this strange door, but she couldn't. Soon, she was standing directly in front of it, shaking.
She reached out, turned the handle, and walked in. Immediately she was washed over with a wave of cold, and Frisk felt goosebumps run up her arms.
"Hello, young one." Standing in front of her was a skeleton. Or, at least, that's what she thought it was. Its head looked like that of a skeleton's, but its body seemed like that of the amalgamates. Blobbish, and pulsating. "I'm sorry, as you can see, I'm not at my best. But no matter. I'll be whole soon enough,"
Frisk swallowed hard. "Wh-who are you?"
"I? I am Dr. W. D. Gaster. And you are Frisk Nardelli," Frisk's eyes widened, and she started to back away from the figure. Before she could make it out of the door, it slammed behind her. "Yes, I know your name. I know why you're down here. What really happened during your life on the Surface. And. I remember every. Single. Reset. Every detail. Not the foggy, partial memories Sans and Alphys have managed to conjure up." With every sentence Gaster moved forward - or was she being pulled towards him? Soon he was close enough that Frisk could feel a chilling breath on her skin.
"What do you want with me?"
Gaster grinned, and started to laugh. It was an ugly thing, and chilled her to her soul.
"With you? I don't want anything with you," He leaned down so close their faces were almost touching. A shiver ran through Frisk's body, starting at her toes, and making its way up to her head. "I want freedom." He straightened, and moved back, turning so he was facing the back wall. He seemed to be considering something. Then he spoke again, softly at first.
"Do you know what it's like... to not exist? To look down and see your friends, your family... and not be able to talk to them? To know they don't even remember you?" His tone grew stronger as he continued. "Do you know what it's like to be scattered into tiny pieces, to be lost across time and space?" His voice raised to a shout, and he turned around to face Frisk again, his eyes now blazing and moving between a furious violet and poisonous green. "Do you know what it's like to watch as everything you ever cared for is destroyed by a tiny, pathetic, human, and to know that you can't do ANYTHING?" As he spoke he seemed to grow taller, but as soon as he finished he closed his eyes and shrank back down. "But I digress. I'm sure you get the picture. I am trapped here. And all I need to be free..." His eyes flashed open once again, and his grin stretched across his face in a grotesque fashion, "All I need... is a replacement." Frisk's soul shrank.
    "I... I don't..."
"Oh, but you do. And... it's too late. You see, all I needed was a way to create this space, a space between the real world... and the void. And you and that meddlesome flower... gave me just that. When he opened up the code to remove the souls, I was able to get in. It took a while to figure out exactly how to create this space to behave the way I wanted, and it took a few tries, to be sure. But now I have finally completed my goal... as soon as I exit this door..." The door behind Frisk moved across the wall until it was behind Gaster, "I will be back in the real world. This room will vanish. And you... will be in the void." He turned around and opened the door. As he slid out of the room, he grew taller and skinnier, and as soon as he was completely out, he had completely transformed. No longer was he a blob. Now he was very clearly a skeletal being. He stopped and looked over his shoulder.
"Good. Luck." The door slammed behind him, and Frisk screamed.
~
Sans was in his basement lab, sorting through his things that he'd brought down from his bedroom. As he organized his folders, he noticed something sticking out of one of them. He reached over and plucked it out. He flipped it over. On it was a child's drawing of three, smiling figures. On the top were written the words "don't forget". He stared, blinking, realizing what it was. Then, a sound behind him jolted him out of his mind.
He whirled around, and before his very eyes the sheet that had been draped over the machine vanished, and lights flickered on. It whirred and beeped as it started back up for the first time in who knows how long. Sans' bones rattled against each other as he shook.
"SANS!" Startled Sans turned around again to face the door. Papyrus ran down the stairs, panicked. "SANS, SANS, I THINK... I THINK..." He was hyperventilating and could barely get his words out.
    "woah, woah, bro. what's wrong?"
"SANS, I THINK..." Papyrus looked his brother dead in the eye, and his voice lowered into the most serious voice Sans had heard in years, "I THINK HE'S BACK."

Mind explaining your 'fanon influenced deltarune' theory? I'm interested but I can't seem to find it.
the post about it was [this one] which I just added onto a different DR post, but i’ll explain it here.... it’s gonna get long so under a readmore it goes.
First, some background: Toby Fox made Undertale in Andrew Hussie’s basement. Who is Andrew Hussie? He wrote a little thing called Homestuck.  What’s Homestuck? A multi-media “web comic” that broke the internet once or twice.   Why is this pertinent? In the latter part of the comic we are introduced to an expanded cast of characters who are related to the original cast.
The new characters (we’ll call.... Alpha for no particular reason) are very much explorations of how the original (Beta) characters are interpreted/treated by fanon!  For example, a movie-loving, mischievous character who everyone ships with his best friend is related to this new Alpha character who is obsessed with movies, a mischievous and adventurous character who actually gets in a relationship with his best friend despite not being emotionally ready or committed to it.  Beta Character had burgeoning feelings for a Blue Girl, which fanon ran with despite them only knowing each other for a day or so, Alpha Character has an extreme interest in Blue Girls in a general sense.
Secondly, the characters could be used to subvert/highlight things Fandom avoided thinking about.  For example, a Beta Character is pathetic and wallowy, who grasped at any attention they could get good or bad. Fandom loved to make this character a kind of moody, heart throb.  Alpha Character is an even MORE pathetic playa.
Now I’ll be the first to say that Toby Fox has no need to be afraid of his work being in Homestuck’s shadow because it’s extremely original and creative and amazing! But that bit of Homestuck got me thinking about DeltaRune’s representation of the characters we loved in Undertale.
Specifically Undyne, as noted in the original post.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you can see... Undyne’s hair is different in Deltarune.  Is it just an updated sprite? Or is it something a little more complex? Just do a quick google search for undyne and you can see how most of fandom interprets her.
Tumblr media
Looks a lot more like the deltarune Undyne than the Undertale sprite, Huh.
If you read post!pacifist Undertale fic, Undyne is either a cop or a gym teacher.  She’s always looking for adventure above ground, looking for those rad anime robabes to fight.  What is she doing in Deltarune? She’s a cop who’s bored because of the day-to-day mundanity of the town.
It’s most clear cut with Undyne, but other characters show this trend as well.  Alphys being a shrinking violet of a nerdy teacher, who gets into internet fights about anime.  Asgore being a sad, lonely man hiding in his flowers. Gaster is, like, a thing now despite being an intentional lost character in Undertale.  (and you know how fandom Loves Gaster).  Toriel is a mom, but like not The Most Angelic Mom on earth, she definitely keeps that “Toriel knows best for you” that a lot of fandom forgets exists.
Kris is a skewed look at Frisk and Chara.  Their own personality being erased so we can project onto it, any clues as to what they prefer or like easily ignored so we can focus on ourselves.
Deltarune’s arc words at the moment seem to be "No one can choose who they are in this world” as well as “I’ll be with you in the dark”  which is a really nice way frame this kind of theme.  Exploring characters you love who are just slightly to the left of what you expect them to be!
I’m not saying that this is like, The Only Valid Theory. I definitely wouldn’t be surprised to see Toby take Deltarune in a completely different direction.  And obviously there are things that don’t fit into this theory at all! And if this is something he’s doing, it doesn’t necessarily have to be because of fanon--but just as an exploration of how the characters where when he first came of with them, or the differences inherent in alternate timelines/universes/realities.
I just think it’s fun to think about!
