Latest episode of The Irrational really missed the opportunity to compare traumatic flashbacks and re-experiencing to that flight simulator-- the brain recreates the event over and over trying to make sense of it, trying to understand how it happened and how to prevent it from happening again, maybe adjusting a few slight components here or there to see if there was a way things might have played out differently…
#the irrational#thoughts#the irrational spoilers#the barnum effect#tramatic memories#the metaphor was right there#and they just didn't quite connect those last few dots#or how that parallels with alec trying to recall his memories of the bombing to figure out the cause#but yeah a lot of ptsd and trauma responses are just the mind trying to understand the Bad Thing and make sure that it doesn't happen again#all queued up

The Barnum effect
(also knownas the Fowler effect orthe Barnum-Fowler effect) is a common psychological phenomenon inwhichaperson receives a high degree of accuracy inadescription of his personality that isostensiblytailor-madeforhim, butisin fact vague and general andthereforeapplicable to manypeople. This effect maypartlyexplainthe widespread use of paranormal beliefs and practices such as astrology, divination, aura reading, and some personality tests.
These characteristics are often used by practitioners as a methodof deception to convince victims that they are endowed with paranormal talents. Because the evaluative statements are very vague, people make their own interpretations, whichin turn makes the statements"personal" to them. In addition, people are more likely to accept a negative evaluation of themselves if they perceive the person giving the evaluation as a high-levelexpert.
The term "Barnum effect" was introduced in 1956 by psychologist Paul Mele in his essay "Wanted-aGood Cookbook"when he linkedvague personality descriptions used in some "pseudo-successful" psychological tests to descriptions given by showman P. T. Barnum and the "delusion of personal evaluation." Name-calling.

bill x ford x stan love triangle real....
#ptsd barnum is nasty work#seriously though I've been thinking about the character implications of this trifecya for years (in both a shipping & non-shipping sense)#like. for ford to effectively plug the gaping whole that stan left behind with bill#who is so very much like stan in so many ways#and then for stan to be the one who takes out bill in the end....it's so perfect#bill hardly ever acknowledges stan's existence in the show. & when he does it's never in a terribly personal way.#so to see (read) him malding over stan like this is SO great. literally making all of my headcanons real for me#gravity falls#tbob#the book of bill#stancest#billford#dumb#these aren't my pictures of the book btw. I got them from twitter

me trying to write a uquiz result in a way that would work for literally everyone:
You exist. Whether you want to or not, you still do. Or at the very least, other people perceive you as someone who exists. Who knows… maybe you don’t actually exist. That’s up to you to figure out.
#uquiz#i was talking to my friend about the barnum effect and this spawned from it#i’m not exactly good at writing results#but people tell me they’re accurate#so y’all have just fallen into my trap#i mean everyone exists right?#and if they don’t then i’m sure someone at least perceives them to…#uquiz results

i saw a tweet that was like "if you dont believe in astrology: why?" and all the answers were like, Oh, i just find it too confusing, or My sign isn't really accurate, or Oh people take it a bit too seriously. hey.... how about that Astrology isn't real. there's nothing about it that's actually seriously physically or metaphysically real. It's not a real thing, that exists
#sometimes i just... feel crazy...#the thing when ur sun sign isnt accurate and people are like Oh welllll that's fairly normal it just means that your other signs are more#prominent in your personality......#No. if we have like 12 different sign houses or whatever. yeah it sure is likely that one of them will be an accurate personality match#so then like WHY DO WE EVEN HAVE SUN SIGNS#literally the most fallacy filled culture ive ever seen in my life please it's just the barnum effect please Please . please.....#it's just one of those things man. disclaimer personal opinion etc etc

i'm not saying i believe in astrology (i do) but people who come on here and talk about exactly how much they don't believe in it are way nastier than whatever silly bullshit an astrology person has said to you because of your sign

Added in Edit: Having had this up for a while, I have to say that it truly amazes me just how many of the religious (most of them in fact) are the epitome of the Dunning-Kruger Effect. Not just stupid, but dangerously stupid. "Threat to the survival of humanity" stupid. Death cult stupid. So I'm adding a couple of tags to the blog, just for them.
Barnum was right. "There's a sucker born every minute." If you can believe in a god (or gods), an invisible, all knowing, all powerful being, based on nothing but your feelings and some moldy manuscript written before modern medicine and electricity, then you'll believe anything at all, no matter how ludicrous. And the evidence of that is in front of us every damn day. Trump. Republicans. Anti-vax. Anti-science. Climate-denial. Anti-abortion. Flat Earth. Steal from the poor and give to the rich.
Added it Edit on 04/02: Just had a porn pusher call on me to repent. Typical of the breed. Hypocrites, all of them. ROTFLMAO!
