Vanja Orico as Maria Clódia in The Bandit / O Cangaceiro (1953)
("Cangaceiro" was a pejorative expression used to refer to bands of poor peasants who inhabited the northeastern deserts of Brazil. They wore leather clothing and hats covered in symbols and metal ornaments. They carried carbines, revolvers, shotguns, and the long narrow knife known as the peixeira.
The 1920s and 1930s saw the height of cangaceiro activity, with the most prominent bands numbering up to as many as 100 bandits. The bandits often behaved well to the poorer sections of society. They performed acts of charity, bought goods for higher than usual prices from small shopkeepers and gave free parties / bailes. In contrast, the wealthy were robbed, targeted for extortion, and were often kidnapped and held for ransom.)

In 1968, an episode marked Vanja's life forever. At the key moment of the burial of student Edson Luís, killed by a military dictatorship, she stood in front of the army, raised a white handkerchief and shouted "Don't shoot, we are all Brazilians." Vanja was imprisoned for 3 days. She wasn't tortured, but she took "a few blows to the head."

American justice has become politicized — a weapon against enemies with hall passes for favored groups. Attorney General Merrick Garland, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, and dozens of big city, George Soros-funded leftist district attorneys routinely prosecute innocent citizens while letting criminals walk free.
The actions of these powerful officers of the law fit a pattern that the great Soviet-era Russian writer Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn not only would have recognized, but he also detailed. Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg’s prosecutions of both Donald Trump and Daniel Penny — closing arguments for Penny’s trial are scheduled for after Thanksgiving — combined with his leniency for deadly criminals are a case in point.
In “The Gulag Archipelago,” Solzhenitsyn wrote of the “Voroshilov Amnesty,” granted three weeks after Stalin’s death in 1953, which “flooded the whole country with a wave of murderers, bandits, and thieves, who had with great difficulty been rounded up after the war.” Communist authorities thought a general amnesty would endear them to the people — of course, many non-violent political prisoners weren’t eligible.
This amnesty was compounded by Article 139 of the Criminal Code of 1926 which defined the “limits of necessary self-defense.” As Solzhenitsyn described the law, “you had the right to unsheathe your knife only after the criminal’s knife was hovering over you. And you could stab him only after he had stabbed you. And otherwise, you would be the one put on trial.” Solzhenitsyn then observed that “This fear of exceeding the measure of necessary self-defense led to total spinelessness as a national characteristic.”

My favourite Scottish singer, Jim Diamond was born on September 28th 1953 in Bridgeton, Glasgow.
Born to Sarah (nee Harper), a seamstress, and Lawrence, a firefighter, who would habitually get up to sing at parties, we all had a relative like this didn't we? Apart from his father, his earliest musical inspirations were soul music greats such as Ray Charles, Sam Cooke and Otis Redding. By the age of 14 he had joined his first band, The Method, and later he became lead singer of the Glasgow group Jade, touring the country playing club and college gigs. Then he embarked on a European tour with the band Gully Foyle (he had seen their advertisement for a lead singer in Glasgow’s Evening Times), which included some dates supporting Procol Harum.
His next stop was a quintet called Bandit, who were signed by Arista Records but they swept away by the emergence of punk rock. Bandit's one album was enough to prompt the NME’s reviewer, Tony Stewart, to comment that he was “an inspired and remarkable vocalist who projects himself well, displaying not only a passion for the music but a staggering range, which he uses fully”.
Bandit split up soon afterwards, but Diamond and Bandit’s guitarist, Danny McIntosh (now Kate Bush’s husband) went on to work with Alexis Korner. Word was spreading about Diamond and his powerfully expressive singing, and he was invited to fly to Los Angeles to form a band with the guitarist and David Bowie collaborator Earl Slick and the drummer Carmine Appice, who had been playing with Rod Stewart, but before the project could come to fruition, Diamond was in demand again, returning to England to form PhD and embarking on the series of hits that sealed his reputation.
Then Diamond contracted hepatitis, which prevented him from touring and prompted PhD to split. In 1984 he was back in action as a solo artist, triumphing with the No 1 heartbreaker I Should Have Known Better, often remembered for its soaring “I-I-I-I-I” chorus, which believe it or not, I pride myself on singing welle, The single, which was from his album Double Crossed , earned him a nomination for an Ivor Novello award.
Diamond’s career cooled after his intense burst of success in the early and mid-80s, although in 1985 Diamond went to No 1 again with the celebrity ensemble The Crowd on You’ll Never Walk Alone, a charity record for families of the victims of the Bradford City stadium fire. In 1986 his second solo album, Desire For Freedom, delivered the No 5 hit Hi Ho Silver, a song commissioned for Boon, starring Michael Elphick, and featuring yet another of Diamond’s catchy choruses, this time set to a briskly pumping reggae beat.
In 1993 he released the album Jim Diamond, which reached No 16 on the UK charts, and went on tour performing acoustic versions of his catalogue of songs. In the late 90s he teamed up with the saxophonist Chris “Snake” Davis, renowned for his studio work with M People, George Michael, Paul McCartney and many more, and they performed as The Blue Shoes. With the Hammond organist Paul Birchall, they also worked on Diamond’s 2005 album Souled and Healed. In 2009 PhD reunited to record a new album, Three.
In 2011 Diamond joined up with a group of Scottish musicians, including veterans from Wet Wet Wet and the Proclaimers, to record City of Soul, a collection of soul music cover versions to raise money for Cash for Kids.
Sadly on n 8 October 2015 Jim Diamond passed away as a result of a pulmonary edema – a build-up of fluid in his lungs. The family later said they were unaware he was unwell, his daughter Sara said “Dad was quite a private man, he didn’t court celebrity, and the only reason he did what he did was because he loved making music." adding “Dad’s song (I should have known better) went to Number one at the same time as Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas was released.
“He was over the moon, but told everyone to go and buy the charity single.” Sara added that the one thing her dad enjoyed using his fame for was to help others. She said: “Dad was always very aware of how lucky we had been as a family, in terms of health and wealth.
“He was very passionate about helping charities. He saw it as his duty to do what he could to give something back.”
RIP Jim Diamond, dubbed "Scotland's Ray Charles.

Nancy Jane Kulp (August 28, 1921 – February 3, 1991) died 32 years ago today at the age of 69. Best known as Miss Jane Hathaway on the popular CBS television series The Beverly Hillbillies.
Kulp moved to Hollywood, California, not long after she married Charles Malcolm Dacus (in April 1951), to work in a studio publicity department, where director George Cukor convinced her that she should work in front of a camera.
She made her film debut as a character actress in 1951 in The Model and the Marriage Broker. She then appeared in other films, including Shane, Sabrina, and A Star is Born. Kulp has an uncredited bit part in a crowd scene as a fan of Donald O'Connor in one of the opening scenes in Anything Goes. After working in television on The Bob Cummings Show, she returned to movies in Forever, Darling, The Three Faces of Eve, The Parent Trap, Who's Minding the Store?, and The Aristocats.
Kulp was once described as television's most homely girl or, as one reviewer put it, possessing the "face of a shriveled balloon, the figure of a string of spaghetti, and the voice of a bullfrog in mating season." Others described her as tall and prim and praised her comedic skills.
In 1953 Nancy had an uncredited part in the Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis movie, "The Caddy". She played Emma, the wife of an inebriated man who had stayed out too late. Her only line was "Well, I don't know where you've been, but at least you came home with first prize". In 1955 Kulp joined the cast of The Bob Cummings Show (a.k.a. Love That Bob) with Bob Cummings, portraying pith-helmeted neighborhood bird-watcher Pamela Livingstone.
In 1956 she appeared in the episode "Johnny Bravo" of the ABC/Warner Brothers series Cheyenne, with Clint Walker. Kulp appeared in 1955-1956 as Anastasia in three episodes of the NBC sitcom It's a Great Life. In 1958 she appeared in Orson Welles' little known TV series The Fountain of Youth. In 1960, she appeared as Emma St. John in the episode "Kill with Kindness" of the ABC/WB detective series, Bourbon Street Beat, starring Andrew Duggan.
Kulp appeared in one episode of I Love Lucy. In the 1956 episode "Lucy meets the Queen," Kulp portrayed an English maid, showing Lucy and Ethel how to curtsy properly before the Queen. She also appeared in episodes of The Real McCoys, Perry Mason (The Case of the Prodigal Parent, 1958), The Jack Benny Program, 87th Precinct, Pete and Gladys, The Twilight Zone, and The Outlaws, and she briefly played a drunken waitress with slightly slurred speech in a 1959 episode of Maverick, featuring James Garner, entitled "Full House." Kulp played a housekeeper in a pilot for The William Bendix Show, which aired as the 1960-61 season finale of CBS's Mister Ed under the episode title "Pine Lake Lodge."
In 1962 she landed her breakout role of Jane Hathaway, the love-starved bird-watching perennial spinster, on CBS's The Beverly Hillbillies television series. She remained with the show until its cancellation in 1971. In 1967, she received an Emmy Award nomination for her role.
In 1966, she appeared as Wilhemina Peterson in the film The Night of the Grizzly, starring Clint Walker and Martha Hyer. In 1978, she appeared on The Love Boat in a segment titled "The Kissing Bandit" and she played Aunt Gertrude in a segment titled "America's Sweetheart".
After The Beverly Hillbillies Kulp appeared on The Brian Keith Show and Sanford and Son. She also appeared in Broadway productions, including Morning's at Seven in 1981.
In 1984, after working with the Democratic state committee in her home state of Pennsylvania "on a variety of projects" over a period of years, Kulp ran unopposed as the Democratic nominee for the United States House of Representatives from Pennsylvania's 9th congressional district. As an opponent of Republican incumbent, Bud Shuster, in a Republican district, Kulp was the underdog.
Sixty-two years old at the time, Kulp said some people might feel her background as an actress was "frivolous." But she noted that Ronald Reagan had taken the route from screen to politics and she said anyone who "listens and cares" can do well.
To her dismay, Hillbillies co-star Buddy Ebsen called the Shuster campaign and volunteered to make a radio campaign ad in which he called Kulp "too liberal." Kulp said of Ebsen, "'He's not the kindly old Jed Clampett that you saw on the show... It's none of his business and he should have stayed out of it.' She said she and Ebsen 'didn't get along because I found him difficult to work with. But I never would have done something like this to him.'" Garnering 59,449 votes, or just 33.6% to Shuster's 117,203 votes and 66.4%, she lost.
Kulp was diagnosed with cancer in 1990, then she received chemotherapy. By 1991 the cancer had spread, and Kulp died on February 3, 1991 at a friend's home in Palm Desert, California. She was 69.

EDITOR: “Christmas Time is Coming” is a favorite song of mine that reminds me of another favorite, Advent season, the anticipation of the birth of Christ. Many churches use an Advent wreath to light an Advent candle each of the 4 Sundays before Christmas to reflect and prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ. The first candle is purple and represents Hope of the Savior through the prophesies. The second candle is purple and represents Peace that comes from trust in God’s promises. The third candle is pink and represents Joy as we rejoice in the promised birth. The fourth candle is purple and represents Love of our Father God in Heaven. Finally, the 5th candle is white, located in the center of the wreath, and represents Christ, God with us, which is what Christmas is all about! Christmas is coming! Let our hearts be glad in the anticipation of the season. LRMartin

ESCAPED PRISONERS THOUGHT SIGHTED NEAR SALEM - (The following story was in the July 8, 1953 issue of the Keowee Courier). . .Residents of the Salem area experienced quite a flurry of tense excitement Thursday afternoon when two men answering the descriptions of two bandits who recently escaped from the Greenville county jail were spotted in the Boone's Creek section. . .They were spotted on the property of Garvin Littleton near the creek, first by Mr. Littleton's daughter. She returned home and told her family about the men, and Mr. Littleton recalled that he had read a story about two escaped prisoners in the newspaper. . .He walked down the path toward the creek, and he too saw the men standing on the bank. They also saw him, and when they did they fled into the woods. . .Mr. Littleton went to Salem and reported the sighting, and Rug Burgess accompanied him back to his home and they went to the creek, but no one was to be seen. . .Meanwhile, word of the sighting spread around Salem like wildfire, and Oconee lawmen were summoned. However, other than footprints along the bank, no other traces of the two men could be found, and it will probably never be determined if they were the escaped bandits or simply a pair of trespassing fishermen.
Jottings from Miz Jeannie by Jeannie Barnwell Wreaths Across America- Patsy Earnhardt, Debbie Kimbrell and I promote patriotism by decorating 23 veterans' graves at our Salem Methodist Church at Christmas. The cemetery had been pretty much ignored. But when we had a purpose to study it, it became a fascinating history lesson! One soldier died in combat in World War II. The remaining 22 veterans returned to Salem after serving in the military. As well as peacetime service, these men participated in World Wars I and II, Korea, and Vietnam. And Oh! Yes! In our cemetery one lone Confederate soldier rests. Since he didn't have a plantation or slaves, we ordered a wreath for him, too. *Favorites: Sony 107.9 radio. Nice music! Thanks to Jazzy Jeff for supporting local. WGOG 101.7 Thanks to Dick Mangrum and Gary Butts who bring us local news like no other! LRM

School District of Oconee County: The next public meeting is Monday, December 11 at 6pm at the District Office, 414 SOUTH PINE STREET, Walhalla. We need support to protest the closing of our Tamassee-Salem Elementary School. Send each board member an email, found on the Oconee County School District website, with valid reasons to protect our school, and our tax-payer dollars invested on Highway 11. The 20 acres of land and building will return to the Tamassee DAR if they close T-S El. How will that save taxpayers money when the school board will need to purchase more land in the future at who knows the cost of future land? T-S El is an asset now as well an investment for the future already in our possession. The School Administration wants to give away this valuable asset. In Mark 9:23 Jesus said, “All things are possible to him that believes.” Please join me and pray for hearts to open, ears to hear, and eyes to see. LRM
Health Corner: Dr. Mike Roizan, a physician from the Cleveland Clinic suggests the benefits of taking 1000u-2000u of Vitamin D3 daily as a supplement to boost the immune system. Proven studies show it helps the body with skin repair, absorb calcium, which helps protect from the bone thinning disease osteoporosis, aids muscle and nerve function, and helps protect from autoimmune diseases, such as psoriasis. Discuss this with your physician. Check out Longevity.com for other supplements to discuss with your physician.
