Okay, two things
A. Your canon of Cult of The Lamb (The one with Azmontes!) has latched onto me like a parasite and genuinely Iām fine with that, Iāve been meaning to say that to you because I genuinely love your art, your characters, the expressions of said characters- ESPECIALLY YOUR COTL STUFF RAHHH-
B. OH OH OH! I also want to know, since COTL did a crossover with Monster Prom where you can date the lamb, how with that go with your lambsona Azmontes?
Thank you!! Iām very glad you like it! :D
I think itād go a bit differently if it was Azmontes in canon!Lambās place! He doesnāt usually take an interest in anyone outside of their three spouses, but letās say they make a special exception for the player. My Azzyās a lot less chaotic & bloodthirsty than canon!Lamb, heās more of a merciful, good-natured gentleman, seeking love more thanā¦human meat and delicious corpses lol. Heād be happy to encourage you to come live at the commune (if you didnāt already have a significantly better living situation)! Theyād offer protection, food, one or two outfits that theyād stitch together themself, but youād get to help design your clothes! Sure, youād have to leave behind all the clothes you already had, along with the rest of your belongings and the entirety of your old life, but heād be willing to help make up for it. Heād get flustered at the idea of marriage, all flattered and bashful, but giddy and happy to accept once he knew you were absolutely okay with it. Theyād introduce you to their spouses and get their permission as well (Sparkle would likely complain and protest, stating that āUniblue is already a big enough of a pawful to handle alreadyā), then heād drive you home to the cult where youād get married first thing and live a (hopefully) happy life in the commune forā¦literally the rest of immortal eternity. Overall, heād be quite kind, helpful (to the best of his extent), flirtatious, bashful, loving, andā¦probably charming.
Youād end up probably about,,,the 7th in command in the cult? Like if Azmontes (1st), Narinder (2nd), Sparkle (close 3rd), Flarefan (4th), Uniblue (5th), and Fire, his daughter (6th) all went down in a crazy coincidence disaster, youād get to rule the cult until any of them came back. The cult might end up doing things without you anyway. Oh well. Itās not much power, but itās worth it to have the new God of Death as a wonderfully happy, doting, loving spouse, keeping you stuck in a cycle of ascension and resurrection for the rest of eternity.
Also I imagine heād look like this
#I have never played monster prom so I have no idea if this idea even works#but itās probably fine#the background in the drawing is an image I took from a shot in monster prom: road trip#and the speech bubble I also obviously took from the game#cult of the lamb#art#quick sketch#cotl#cotl x monster prom crossover#iridisasks#oc art

Dungeon Meshi Episode 7 was super interesting from an adaptation standpoint - this'll be a little different from what I usually write about (though I do still talk about the animation in the full video).
Studio Trigger have never done a straight-up manga adaptation before - and led by Yoshihiro Miyajima, a big fan of the manga who pushed hard for the adaptation to get made, and who has never directed a full series before, it was unclear if they'd be able to find the right balance between a simple panel-for-panel recreation and making something that's completely different.
And in the first few episodes, you could really feel the tension between the influence of a cautious young creative with great respect for the source material, and a studio with a unique established visual style. It kinda seemed like they were ping-ponging willy-nillily between the two sides of that spectrum.
But this episode showed that Miyajima (and series writer Kimiko Ueno) can take 3 chapters, slice them up and rearrange them into a cohesive-feeling episode while taking into account the differences between screen and page, and using them to their advantage.
Starting with the way the water looks. This line from the manga describes a faint magical glow to the water in this lake and you can see that the cavern fades into darkness above, but Kui's illustration style doesn't really define lighting and shadows very much compared to the cel-drawing style of animation. So the animators took the opportunity to use the water as the light source, and make a whole episode that's lit almost entirely from below. It really gives an otherworldly feeling to this area.
Particularly when the Kelpie shows up, that under-lighting works wonders to define its anatomy within the relatively simple line art.
What do you do when you can't show the immense fuck-off scale of a monster with a beautiful full-page spread like this?
Well you use what you do have: the ability to move the camera instead. This is such a great way to communicate the scale of this thing, AND such a great way to show some of Senshi's anime-original butt-cheeks!
This is one of my favorite shots from this episode - this whole sequence is super hectic, cutting quickly from character to character, but they use tricks like this to keep you from getting confused. This is framed much like it is in the manga, but with the moving image, they're able to use the trajectory of the fish head in the background to lead your eye directly from Chilchuck, right to the point where Senshi pops up in the foreground and transition seamlessly from one character to another!
Now, it's not all good - I am a bit disappointed that they removed Marcille's own Senshi-style soap-making montage, which was the perfect visual representation of the culmination of the character development and understanding built between Senshi and Marcille.
It's a shame to see it go.
I get more into that, what else was cut, and much more in this video where I broke down the entire episode!
Check it out if you feel like it. If you don't, jump in a ditch, cover yourself in leaves and jump out at people as they walk by.
Thanks for reading!

The Last Phoenotopia Blog Update
(Date 2021 MAR 01)
I debated how to open this blog post, but perhaps the main crux of this blog post is the best place to start. The blog is being retired.
The purpose of this blog was to be a "development" blog for Phoenotopia, and well, Phoenotopia's development is done. I'll still be doing bug fixes and maintenance on the PC and Switch versions, and playstation and xbox ports are underway (by a publisher). But I'm not going to be making any more major changes to the game. At some point, you put the paintbrush down and say it's done. Blemishes and all.
Recent Events
The game launched on Steam last month, and like any launch, it was hectic. Bugs Galore. This is our first commercial PC launch, so it was a real baptism by fire. Unlike Switch's one configuration, the PC has multiple configurations and factors to account for. The game needed to be able to handle multiple control schemes, screen resolutions, refresh rates, and more! I had a 60Hz monitor going into launch and didn't know anything about Hz (I do now). There was a troublesome stutter that some players were sensitive to that my whole team didn't notice since our eyes compensated it away. There were a few times where in fixing something at one party's behest, it introduced problems for another party. A few times, due to disorganization, I unwittingly rolled back a fix that was meant to be applied. For some, the game couldn't play at all (really glad Steam allows refunds).
It was messy. It was tiring. I.AM.BEAT.
I think the worst of it is over... I'll still be around to do the last updates and bug fixes, but I'm ultimately ready for what's next.
SO what is next?
What isn't next... is Phoenotopia 2. As you may have heard down the grapevine, the game couldn't be what you call successful. No one's earned even minimum wage on it.
Maybe there's hope in the game's long tail. A year or two down the line... maybe. I won't hold my breath though. At some point in the past few months, I finished processing (or grieving) and it's time to move on.
The game has at least earned enough for us to continue our modest operations. As long as we don't expand the team, and we don't take another monster six-year dev cycle like what Phoenotopia took, we can continue. We'll have to be smarter and faster. Perhaps the most valuable thing we gained from all this is experience.
The Experience
It is a dev blog. Here are some of the lessons I've accumulated from this game's development.
- Have a good menu design. Menus aren't just that in-between fluff before you get to the good stuff. Menus are KEY. Your menus need to be robust, expandable, and *understandable* (to you, the developer). Because once the game's out, you will invariably be asked to add more options. And if your menu design is bad, every time you have to add a new menu option, it becomes a whole new pain all over again. Support mouse from the get-go, etc.
- Focus on features that people will actually care about. For instance, I've never seen anyone praise the camera's zoom feature. In practice, people try that feature a few times and then never use it again. But that feature was a constant consideration factor for every level. Run through it multiple times to make sure the level didn't break, think about which zoom levels made sense, resize rooms because they worked at one zoom level but not the other, and so on.
- Don't do boxes that you can move around. Other 2D platformers avoid movable boxes because they're a huge headache to program and they really complicate the game space. Enemies need to respond to boxes you throw in their path and either navigate around or attack it. When you're moving the box, you have to worry about constantly changing your collision size and reconciling when the box gets snagged on the environment. The boxes were also a constant source of bugs because people can manipulate them to soft-lock themselves and more.
- More focused script. Phoenotopia's 100,000+ word script was panned more for being bloated than it was praised for being lengthy. Long scripts take a long time to write and make the game more unwieldy, increasing the costs of translation and upkeep. Every update we're addressing some textual error or mistranslation. There are some highly renowned games (e.g. Hyper Light Drifter) that do without a script at all!
- Be flashy! A bat and a lightsaber take the same amount of work to program, but the lightsaber will draw a lot more attention and interest.
- Slopes, surprisingly! Six years ago when I started, Unity was ill-equipped for 2D games. If you used the physics that Unity provided you'd have a really floaty character that wouldn't adhere to the slope when going downhill. There were a hundred different tutorials saying different things (use forces, use move position, use translation, etc). You can get rectangular collisions done in a day, but to do slopes took weeks. Meanwhile, games can actually get by fine without slopes. Most people won't even notice. Did you know the Phoenotopia flash game didn't have slopes? Neither does Hollow Knight or Rogue Legacy. You can save yourself a lot of work by avoiding slopes.
(big entities look weird on slopes. Bad slope!)
I could write enough little knowledge nuggets like this to fill a book! But I'd rather just make the next game.Ā
Soā¦ what IS next?
As mentioned previously, it's not Phoenotopia 2. Pirate and I are mostly just tossing some ideas back and forth right now. We'll go silent for a year (or two). Our next game's scope will be more modest in some ways, more ambitious in others. It will definitely be more smartly designed. (There will be a map!)
We'll announce it when it's ready for the public. It might be necessary for us to do a kickstarter. I've tried to avoid kickstarters having been burnt on quite a few myself and also because I worry that mismanaging a kickstarter would earn the ire of backers.
But I did keep this blog regularly updated for six years. So I've gained some confidence in my abilities to at least manage a kickstarter well.
Is it really the last Phoenotopia Blog update though?
Okay, not really. There is some news that I'll need to announce, and this blog is one of the game's main outreach channels. Here are the events that will cause me to update the blog:
Announcing the launch of the xbox/playstation ports when they're ready
If a physical edition of the game happens
If a new language is getting introduced into the game (Korean is a high possibility)
When we're ready to talk about our next game
If (BIG IF) we begin development on a Phoenotopia sequel. I do want to do a sequel one day if we have the means and the demand is there.Ā
Those updates will be more on a "when they happen" basis, rather than me reporting in every couple months.
Fan Art
As always, I'm very happy to see fanart of Phoenotopia. Major thanks again to Pimez for collecting all the artwork from the corners of the internet! Since this is the "last" blogpost, Sir Pimez can finally take a rest from collecting the fanart :P
ĆV made a series of pictures that tell a story. A Pooki is humanely sheared of its wool to create a hat. The Pooki is unharmed. Nice! Gotta love Gailās expressions.
Amagoo Mazeru makes a stunning landscape shot of a full moon and shooting stars. Itās a sharp and clear vector art. I like the faint glow of the moon and the fire and the subtle gradient in the night sky. Very skillfully done!
Hah hah. I got a chuckle out of this one. I imagine this is how Gail's enemies see her by the end of the game. CaESar made this image based on TerminalMontage's famous youtube videos. Nailed it!
CrownStar drew two pictures of Gail. I'm a big player of JRPGs, so the first shot instantly reminded me of Persona 4's art style. (Hmmm... Phoeonotopia as a JRPG... thereās potential there...) Next, Birdy is shown carried off after her defeat. I really like Birdy's expression here - she just seems mildly uncomfortable.
There's a bit of a story behind the first image. As Firanka shares it, she wasn't able to defeat the Big Eye monster at the end of the flash game, so she believed a tall tale that what awaited after was a 6 armed Kobold boss. Hilarious! The second is a rendition of the lonely Anuri elder. A rare subject. The loneliness is portrayed well here. I feel lonely just looking at it!
Koo_chop draws the clash between Gail and Katash at the top of the towers. I really like this interpretation of the game's art style. Itās faithful to the in-game graphics. And the lighting, from the glow of Gail's bat, to Katash's sword, and the lightning in the background... Amazing!
Lime Hazard shows Gail with a salute pose. Very appropriate for this occasion. I also like how there's a slight tilt in the angle that Gail is portrayed. Those dynamic angles are always hard to get right, and Lime Hazard pulled it off very skillfully. See you next mission!
Lyoung0J with a digital painting of Gail posed sitting on a rock. I like how it almost seems like she was caught in a candid moment - sheās smiling, but also feeling self-conscious. Cute! The art style really pops, and I like how Gail is sporting what I call the old anime style nose.Ā
MyUesrNameIsSh*t with a sketch of Gail performing a skillful slingshot. I like how Gail is depicted with her tongue out in a mischievous manner, the way all mischievous people with slingshots do.
Niitsu Kentaro returns with a 2021 Happy New Year picture. That happened didn't it? A New Year... Gail's pose gave me a chuckle with how she seems to be waving the bat around as casually as one would wave hello. And "Phoenotopiyear"... Well said! One day we'll have our Phoenotopiyear...
Ochan Nu breaks all records with a stunning NINE pictures in one session :O
There's so many goodies here. My favorite would be the one with Gail staring intently at the screen - it's like she's looking directly at you. You almost feel uncomfortable.
Next, there's an Animal Crossing villager dressed as Gail and sporting her pink hair. It even looks like a house Gail would live in. Gail is a connoisseur of the arts and likes Mona Lisa. Yes :)
There are various comics of Gail pointing out Gail's weird food habits. A picture of Fran looking really cool, and even Gail rocking a bathing suit. (bathing suit image linked here in case NSFW). Wow!
Pimez didn't just collect the arts, he creates them as well! This one, which he aptly named 'The Year 175' is a depiction of when the dragons invaded the towers as told by an elderly Daean woman. Great pixeling skills! I got a good chuckle from the ice dragon leaving with its stuff slung over its shoulder.
Quo made a stunning picture of Gail playing the flute surrounded by the 5 musical notes and the Phoenix logo behind her. The theme seems to be "fire" and it works really well. Gail herself looks awesome depicted in her red suit - it's like she's leading a marching band!
Rai Asuha depicts Gail in the late game with her red suit, and night star bat, and holding a lamp. She looks ready for adventure! I really like the white outline here and Gail's poofy shoulders here - the art style feels reminiscent of Final Fantasy Tactics.
Seri also draws Gail bearing her late game equipment. Unique to Seri's drawing is how all of Gail's equipment is accessible from a pocket on her shirt. I also like how Gail is depicted with her lucky earrings - that accessory is often forgotten.
Treedude depicts Gail with a bat and wearing a funny smirk. She looks like she's ready to hurt someone!
Warotar returns with everyone's favorite Great Drake, Bubbles! It seems so happy to be featured!
I'm really grateful for all the fanart this game has received. From the bottom of my heart, thank you!
Closing Notes
Pirate drew a picture to mark the occasion. It shows Gail enjoying a hot chocolate with marshmallows and a pumpkin muffin. A rest well-earned...
Goodbye! Until next time!

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX Episodes 65 and 66 Subbed (Finalized)
(Check out my Subbed!GX Stream Masterpost!)
Hell Kaiser Ryou! Chimeratech Overdragon
Since his defeat to Ed in the Pro Leagues, the life in Kaiser Ryou has faded.Ā But at the invitation of a suspicious promoter, he participates in an underground duel--duels in which, crucially, one risks their life to treat their savage audience to a show.Ā As Acidic Last Machine Virus causes his Machine-Types like Cyber Dragon to rust, the Kaiser is not only cut off from summoning any Monsters, but it causes him to take damage.Ā With each drop in his LP, an electric current flows through his body, exciting the spectators...
Judaiās First Dream Duel!
Lost in the forest, Judaiās consciousness starts to fade from hunger, causing him to reminisce about his duels thus far--taking down Instructor Chronosās Ancient Gear Golem with Flame Wingman during his Entrance Exam, battling the then-Blue elite Manjoume and his V-to-Z Dragon Catapult Cannon shortly after his enrollment, battling Misawaās seventh deck with the right to represent the Academia on the line, and his first loss in the face of Kaiser Ryouās Cyber End Dragon...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*crashes onto your TL months late with non-corporate coffee*
And these two are finally up and finalized! Sorry for the wait, if you were looking forward toĀ āem--as I mentioned in my post on Sunday, they were pushed back a bit while I did one final lookover on 1-64ā²s scripts and hardsubs so I could actually call them āfinalized.ā Iād started to get them out of the way while waiting for some potential editing help, then just decided to finish it after scrapping the last little thing I hoped to work on (I planned to break briefly after 66 to do these re-finalizations anyway, but the timing happened to work out).Ā Ā More details there.
But leaving that aside, here we have a pretty popular episode in Hell Kaiser Ryouās debut, as heās pushed to the brink by Mad Dog Inukai after Monkey Monkey Mountain Saruyama invites him to his first underground duel. They do a really good job of portraying Ryou as having lost his mojo post-Ed, showing a realistic view of what the big leagues in sports are like when that happens to you and you lose out on sponsorships/etc, and so when he gets cornered and Saruyama drills into him how he never once thought of winningĀ since that duel, wanting to just stick with his respectful dueling, a sparkĀ lights up in him and... well, RIP Mad Dog. (Also, s/o to Takeshi Maeda for really selling Ryouās shift in mindset by the end, and to his dub VA for sounding similarly good, imo.)
66 is probably less popular in comparison, treating us to our first clipshow of the series, though 66 episodes in isnāt a bad time (could be worse, VRAINSĀ jk).Ā Itās endearing enough, though--kinda nice seeing SAL again; Judaiās hunger-induced visions give us Chronos, Misawa, and Manjoume making monkey noises; and the duels featured were important for Judai early on.Ā I also like the bit of new animation as vision!Ryou follows up with Judai about respecting his opponents; goes with what Iād noticed before about Judai adding his Fusion Undone/De-Fusion strategy to his own dueling after losing to him. (also Judai making a signpost sweatdrop from his aloofness pls)
Part of the initial delay with these were the footage fixes I wanted to work on, as well as a couple visual translations here/there which were fun to work on.Ā Really want to thank @paradoxi-kay for their great work as always in helping to translate the cover of the copy of Duel Magazine that Judai comes across early in 65, and starting the one on Shouās copy that I finished up.Ā List of everything worked on below the cut, as usual, if youāre curious.
Enjoy, folks! Iāve gotten some work started on 67 already, and my plan is to try and work on some double releases to make up a bit of time, lol.Ā Iāll be posting these two on NAC in the next couple of days along with the re-finalized hardsubs and scripts/DVDRips; while I work on getting 67 and 68 done, Iāll also start some work on prepping softsub MKVs (also to go up on NAC) for everything Iāve fully finalized, since itās been a while on that front.
Fixes/Edits! (65)
As Judai wanders in the forest early in the episode, he comes across a stack of old Duel Magazines; the front cover shows Ryou and is an issue from his winning streak days before his more recent loss to Ed.Ā Thanks to @paradoxi-kayāās great work in typesetting my translation onto the cover I blanked (which I detailed here), youāll see it in English in the hardsub above.Ā The translation was first applied to the close-up of the cover that comes after #2 below, and then I took the translated cover and made it its own image that I put into the earlier shot as Judai approaches it while theyāre all still tied up (detailed here).Ā The text reads,Ā āExclusive!! Kaiser Ryou Marufuji / Breaking down his Cyber Dragon deck!!! / In this issue: / -Duelists Du Jour / -Pro League Battle Data! / -Reader-Submitted Best Duels! / -Strategic Attack Decks by Type!ā (Really appreciated Kayās input onĀ āDu Jourā because my original translation for that,Ā āDuelists Who Are All the Rage,ā wasnāt as catchy, lol.)
As Judai picks up one of the older Duel Magazines and flips it open, we see on the back cover an ad featuring the three Phantasms--itās actually an in-show ad for Shadows of Infinity (since the episode aired around the time the pack came out in Japan); I detailed the process in blanking and translating it hereĀ (shared above).Ā The ad reads,Ā "The Three Phantasms Descend!" featuring Uria and Ravielās names on their images.
As we go to the Red dorm as Shou narrates about the Kaiserās slump, we see a magazine page describing what happened to him since his loss to Ed; I covered my blanking/translating this in the link shared in #2.
We then see that itās Shou reading the page from his own copy of Duel Magazine, this one more recent than Judaiās featuring Ed on the cover, though it features the same SOI/Phantasms ad on its back cover (now showing Hamon and its name as well).Ā Like with Judaiās issue, I used the Japanese cover and the dubās edit as reference to just redraw Ed and Diamondguy enough to remove Edās name; Kay had started the translation placement and I finished it up.Ā For the SOI ad, like with #2, I added in the dubās edit in pieces, tweaking it to match the original image more (since they again oddly edited the text out or redrew Uria/et al weirdly to do so).Ā We do now see more of the ad which shows that the trioās names are on each of them, the English of which I added.
As Asuka snatches the magazine from Shou to work on cheering him up, to be consistent, I also worked in these cover translations to the magazine as she lifts then curls it up, using the dubās blanked Phantasms edit as a base that I touched up a bit while adding back the Japanese cards.Ā Detailed more in #2ā²s link.Ā (We now also see that the ad reads on,Ā āNew! Shadow of Infinity - On Sale November 11th [2005]!ā; the IRL booster pack came out in Japan on Nov. 17th, 2005, a few weeks before 65 aired.)
Asuka then lifts the curled-up magazine into view in a close-up, with the SOI/Phantasms ad visible which I also applied my translations above to as needed, using the dubās blank edit as a base that I redrew parts of to touch up and match the Japanese image more.Ā Detailed more in #2ā²s link.
As Ryou meets Monkey Saruyama, he introduces himself by handing out his business card reading, "Saruyama Promotion - Representative Monkey Saruyama;" as detailed in #2ā²s link, I cleaned it up using Photoshopās Clone Tool, then slapped the translation on using Calibri as the font.
As Ryou contemplates attacking Acid Slime with his Cyber Dragon and Mad Dog Inukai taunts him, as Mad Dog then slides in on a split-screen to āclear his doubts,ā thereās a quick frame as Inukai takes over the screen where thereās a gap between his pecs and the split-screen edge.Ā I fixed it by just drawing in the rest of his chest in Photoshop to fill his side of the split-screen.
As Inukai starts his turn and activates his Contingency Fee Magic Card, thereās a frame where, as heās sliding his hand with the card into the shot, the card itself slides ahead in his hand before his hand does; as a result, you can see a bit of the background just under the card before his hand catches up to the card in the next frame.Ā I fixed this by just duplicating the first frame here over it in Vegas.
Two here--first, after Ryou has his Proto Cyber Dragon attack Clone Slime, as Inukai begins to explain its effect, thereās a quick frame before the shot goes from a close-up to a slow zoom as he moves where his neck vanishes (new meme format go); I fixed this by just duplicating the previous frame in Vegas, while also correcting one of his looping lip-flap frames so that the scar on his chin is above the shading under his lip.Ā Ā Then, as Inukai goes into Clone Slimeās effect and the shot slowly zooms out, we see Clone Slime on his Disk in Attack Mode when itās in Defense Mode right now; fixed it by placing a proxy in Defense in AfterEffects for a frame, then re-keyframing that frame to the zoom-out in Vegas to put it in place.
After Acid Slime slips out of Inukaiās Cemetery as Clone Slimeās effect activates, Inukai moves to grab it before the two Slimes switch out, but Clone Slimeās still in Attack Mode on his Disk; fixed by placing the Defense-Mode proxy over it in AE, then moving it as he moves his Disk and applying a brief brightness increase as the light from Clone Slime being replaced with Acid Slime grazes it.
As Proto Cyber Dragonās attack approaches Acid Slime in a quick shot, the card under it in Defense Mode is reversed (the name box should face to the left to match how itās placed on his Disk); fixed by first applying the correctly-facing proxy in AfterEffects and moving it as the shot moves, then masking Acid Slime back in over it, along with the light coming from the attack as it starts to shine over its card.
As Ryou explains Overload Fusionās effect, just before it starts to zoom out as he then chooses the six Monsters heāll fuse, there are a few frames I noticed where Ryouās whooshing hair throughout this shot suddenly stops whooshing; I fixed it by just masking in his whooshing hair from the previous frames for a few.
As Ryou taunts Inukai about how his Acidic Last Machine Virus will bother him no more, Inukai starts to slide in on a split-screen, but until his split-screen has fully slid in, thereās no border on its edge; I fixed it in Vegas by first masking out the border once itās fully slid in, then moving it in another video layer with his split-screen for those nine frames.
As Ryou explains Chimeratech Overdragonās multiple attacks, we see it reversed on his Disk; fixed by slapping on the correctly-facing proxy in AfterEffects, then re-keyframing it to the slow zoom in Vegas for the 94 frames it zooms out in (phew).
One error that I hoped to fix but scrapped happens as Chimeratech Overdragonās first attack closes in on Inukaiās Multiple Slime, where we see a Defense-Mode card under it despite it being in Attack Mode the way Inukai summoned it (and since he then takes damage from the attack); couldnāt quite figure out how to light up the floor Iād redrawn under itĀ with the ensuing explosion, and had sought a bit of help to get it right but ultimately that fell through. (Incidentally, not only did the dub not catch this as they dubified its card, but they reversed the card, at that, lol.)
Fixes/Edits! (66)
(Note: These are all flashback-related, and I detailed most of them [including a few new ones] in my post from Sunday thatĀ I linked just under the summaries; I went on to apply the fixes Iād applied in 66 to the respective episodes, so Iāll be brief here.Ā Reinserted fixes from a while back are in italics.)
(Episode 1 Flashback) I reinserted the fix I did to replace the blank Normal Monster on Judaiās Disk in Flame Wingmanās spot with its card as Antique Gear Golem crashes onto Chronos.Ā [Ep. 1 Flashback End]
(Episode 22 Flashback) As Misawa attacks with Litmus Death Swordsman to start his flashback, I reinserted the fix I did to detail the blank cards on his Disk with Diamond Dragon and Litmus Death.
As Misawa finishes explaining Wingbeat of Giant Dragonās effect and it zooms out to Litmus Death, I reinserted my fix to his reversed card on Misawaās Disk to flip it right-side-up.
Reinserted my fix to the repeat of #3 as Skyscraper fades.
Reinserted my fix to another repeat as Misawa explains Spirit Barrierās effect.
R-R-Reinserted my fix to the r-r-repeat again as we see Misawaās Disk while Judai explains Cyclone Boomerangās effect (gotta love reused animation!) [Ep. 22 Flashback End]
(Episode 4 Flashback) As Judai prods Manjoume into choosing a card from his hand for A Hero Appearsās effect, I fixed Manjoumeās blazer lookingĀ semi-faded for a frameĀ on his split-screen.
As Judaiās LP take a hit from V-to-Z destroying Burstlady, I fixed the four frames where the upper part of his Disk is missing the little bottom part that extends outĀ a bit andĀ Judaiās vanishing Disk wrist grip.
A bit complex, but I fixed Judaiās briefly-still-missing-then-vanishing-again wrist grip, the shading near his Cemetery slot, Judaiās arm becoming part of his Disk, and his wrist grip suddenly consuming his whole wrist. (Detailed in that Sunday post)
Reinserted my fix to the Attack-Mode Winged Kuriboh on Judaiās Disk to put it in Defense Mode asĀ he discards two to activate Evolutionary/Transcendent Wings.
As Judai swings his arm around telling Winged Kuriboh LV10 to āsend [V-to-Zās] energy right backā at Manjoume, I reinserted my fix to put its Defense-Mode card in the spot on his Disk colored like the Monster Zone itās on for a few frames.
A bit complex again recycling the Judai shot in #9, but I fixed his again-vanishing Disk wrist grip and half-Disk arm, his wrist grip suddenly consuming his whole wrist again, and his yet-again-vanished wrist grip, miscolored undershirt, and his half-Disk elbow while restoring some previous detail to his Disk. (Detailed in that Sunday post)
As Judai summons Feathermanāto Shou and Chronosās surpriseāand has him lunge at Manjoume for the finisher, I reinserted my fix to keep the black faraway box that is Featherman on his Disk both as those two slide in on split-screens and as they slide back out. [Ep. 4 Flashback End]
(Episode 8 Flashback) I reinserted my fix to remove Featherman from Judaiās Disk as his LP drop from Cyber Dragon destroying it.
Reinserted my fix to a repeat of #14 as Judaiās excited about Ryouās Time Capsule.
As Judai draws for his turn, I added a Fusion card over the dark-orange rectangle briefly in his hand as he draws it.
After Judaiās first hit on him, I fixed the error as Ryou Special-Summons another Cyber Dragon asĀ a Monster in face-down Defense Mode on his second Monster Zone (detailed in that Sunday post).
Reinserted my fix adding Cyber Twin Dragon to Ryouās Disk over a yellow rectangle.
As the screen zooms in on Judai after Ryou declares Cyber Twinās attack, I added Thunder Giant to Judaiās third Monster Zone, then reinserted my previous fix adding it as it zooms back out while Judai uses A Hero Appears.
Reinserted my fix adding a few quick lip flaps to Judai as he says,Ā āPartner,ā out loud.
As Judai thinks about how Evolutionary Wings would evolve his Winged Kuriboh and we then see Bubbleman on his field, I added a missing Bubbleman card to his Disk.
Right after #21, I revised my previous fix to replace the Defense-Mode Mudballman on his Disk with an Attack-Mode Bubbleman, after I accidentally put it in Defense Mode before.
As Ryou grabs Power Bond from his hand before activating it, IĀ reinserted my fix adding Ryouās two missing Cyber Dragons to his Disk and then one over the blank Normal Monster card in his left hand.
As Ryou slips Power Bond into his Disk, I reinserted my fix adding those two missing Cyber Dragons onto his Disk.Ā [Ep. 8 Flashback End]
For the Ep. 67 preview, I added my translation of the notice left on the Red dorm by Napoleon which Iāll be using in the episode proper.
Supernatural Rewatch Ramblings: Dead in the Water
This episode is the first one to be directed by Kim Manners. It was written by Raelle Tucker and Sera Gamble. It is still the MoTW format and once again the āmonsterā is something that was created by human action. Ordinary seeming storiesāof bullying, lies, cover upāwith deadly consequences.
Read below the cut for more and also watch out for the add-ons by my partner in crime @soulmates-for-realā who does the most amazing gifsets and image galleries š
It reminded me of this quote:
āIf only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?ā Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn,Ā The Gulag Archipelago 1918ā1956
It is a chilling experienceāboth the actual monster when we do finally see it and the backstory of what really happened. These monsters are all created by the flawed human beings. Here is another quote from the same source which could well be the underlying bedrock of the two very different approaches we see Sam and Dean take in later episodes to the whole saving people hunting things.
āSince then I have come to understand the truth of all the religions of the world: They struggle with theĀ evil inside a human beingĀ (inside every human being). It is impossible to expel evil from the world in its entirety, but it is possible to constrict it within each person.ā .
Philosophical overtones aside, we are also getting more glimpses into the heads and hearts of the two leads.
It is already obvious that Dean has put the whole āDad- is- missing- and- hasnāt- been-home-in -a -few-days stuffā on the back burner till ā¦ummm Ā forever ? cos he has Sammy in front of his eyes who is sitting shotgun and being completely brotherly and sniping and bitching while also being boyfriend- level possessive.
As I said in the earlier review- I was just so swept away by the swashbuckling swagger of Dean that so obviously was an armour for his vulnerability that I almost didnāt notice Sam much. This is the episode where he became something more for me. Someone who was also finding out what Dean was all about at the same time as we were.
Someone who could pull him down to earth with a sharp: āPeople donāt just disappear, Dean. Other people just stop looking for them.ā
But also reach out to him and remind him that they ācanāt save everyoneā.
In an early scene in the episode Sam scolds Dean for even starting to flirt with the waitress.Ā
He smirks when Andrea shoots Dean down. He mocks Deanās pick- up line about kids are the best. He seems pleased in a very petty way that Deanās attempt has failed and that he has no choice now but to hang out with Sam and to give him his full attention.
The episode does have plot holes āthat house Lucas draws and the history of the friendship of the two men and the missing boy surely must be well known to everyone in that small town, including Lucasās mother and how come no one joins the dots etc. etc.
But small quibbles aside, we get to see that the past casts long shadowsāwhether sins of the past or just events of the past. ( again a parallel to the lives of the Winchesters themselves. And in later seasons we find out just how far back into the past those shadows reach!)
We see that Dean connects with the mute boy, Lucas, but then we learn that he can do this because he had also shut down after he saw his mother die and he knows how scary the world can seem and how he needed to make himself brave to carry on.
Sam watches from the sidelines and we can see him have an āoh okā moment as he stores away this information because it has clearly never been discussed in the family earlier. Kudos to Jared for being amazing with theĀ āactive listeningā that Sheila OāMalley references so often.
So despite Sam challenging him to name 3 kids he even knows, we see that Dean actually focusses on the kid throughout. The shared sense of loss aside, maybe Dean also sees himself as the protector of all little kids especially after the Shtriga incident. (which we donāt know anything about yet) (and we do see him bond with kids in every episode that involves kids. It is adorable !!)
In this episode Dean is almost drowning in his dadās leather jacket and the way the silver ring looks on his hand is just ridiculously sexyā¦sighā¦.and that amulet right where it belongsā¦..deeper sigh. Then the cocky grin, the unsubtle flirting, all macho/manly/me- so- hetero/me- see- me- conquer on the outside but the soft squidgy child- whispering caramel centre, the trauma of being a motherless kidāhaving become motherless in a brutal way, a missing and probably almost cruel dad, a brother he raised as his own who walked out on him to go seek his own dreamsā¦.all these layers are being put together slowly for us.
Dean is not what he seemed to be and that brash swashbuckling exterior hides a very complex and interesting person. The script and direction were excellent of course but Jensen brought to it just the perfect balance of bad-boy + I wuv hugs.
Sam is still finding his way into the story and we are still watching things from Deanās perspective as narrator which is fascinating to realize during the re-watch. As I have mentioned earlier, I was so swept away by Dean that it took me a very long time to focus on Sam as a separate person.
Ok, now, all together shout--- --WHY do people DO the following things??!!!
Put hands elbow deep into a sink, give lifts to obvious deranged malevolent spirits in human form, āletās split up so we can cover more groundā, go into a shower/bath in a scary sceneācanāt they HEAR the dun-dun-dun music score in the background?!! Sheesh.
Anyway. Ā Ā *eyeroll*
In a not- at- all- very- surprising turn of events Sam and Deanās fake identity is called out and they are asked to leave town, which they do. But ā¦.of course Dean does a very dramatic turn on the highway and takes them back to make sure the kid is ok!
Then Sam rescues the mother from the lethal bath- tub while Dean makes sure the kid is safe. Then they start to connect even more dots and eventually we see an incredible heroic rescue scene in the scary lake with Dean and the boy.
Jensen had described this shot in some interview as the most terrifying scene he had ever done apparently because he was responsible not only for doing the scene right but also for the young boyās safety underwater.
What a fabulous visual we do get finally, with the boy in his embrace as they shoot out of the water!
That lake with its dark water is one super creepy place. That very first scene where we see the girl swimming from an underwater perspective had me yelling at the screen for her to GET OUT NOW.
So, finally, all is sorted and revenge has been had and bad folks die, good folks live and as they leave the town of course Lucas chats with Dean and they high five and just like the sister in the Wendigo episode, the young mother in this one also gives Dean a kiss on his cheek. Dean of course blushes and goes all gruff and drives off with Sam smirking in the shotgun seat.
The pattern is beginning to be established.
I am loving it!š
.
The gag reel of this episode shows Jensen leaping into Jaredās arms.
This is the third episode only. So they have known each other only for a couple of months at this point?! Hmmā¦my J2 tinhat is also shining. And also wow. I mean Jensen is NOT a tiny guy.
Ā Here are some other possibly more erudite and informed reviews if you would like to go down that rabbit hole like I did.
This one is cool https://the-orbit.net/entequilaesverdad/2016/05/10/supernatural-s1-e3-dead-water-summary/ and gives a fun and interesting score at the end which goes like this
Episode 3 counts:
Woman in the Fridge: 1
For Sophie Carlton being the first to get murdered by the vengeful spirit. Itās obviously meant to hook us harder: I mean, nobody would care as much about obnoxious brother Will, right?
Revenge from Beyond the Grave: 4
Sophie Carlton, Will Carlton, Bill Carlton, and Jake Devins.
Brotherly Love: 2
I had to give one to Sam for cock-blocking his brother right at the start. Another point goes to Deanās sick-of-your-attitude lecture to his little brother, throwing Samās decision to go to college while Dean stayed behind with their dad in his face.
Toxic Masculinity: 1
For Dean downplaying his grief when Sam draws him out about the aftermath of their motherās death.
Swimming in Sexism: 2
For Will Carltonās comment to his sister that āguys donāt like buff girls.ā I added a point for all the times they had Dean hitting on any available woman. They do want us to be extra-very sure heās hetero, donāt they?
Cumulative Counts:Ā Deanās Man Tears: 3
One point awarded for all Deanās choking up about Mom. Weāre now three for three, folks.
.
This review totally calls out Dean LOL. I love the reviews that were written as first watch because they are without the benefit of hindsight we have on a re-watch.
.
http://markwatches.net/reviews/2013/11/mark-watches-supernatural-s01e03-dead-in-the-water/
āIt was fascinating to me, then, that through this, Sam was able to learn about Deanās own emotional reasoning behind his hunting. Of course, Dean, being the most stereotypical dude of all dudes who ever duded, has to immediately act like feelings arenāt cool because BLEH. Okay,Ā thatĀ is one aspect of Dean that Iām not terribly interested in, especially since he expresses feelingsĀ like every five seconds.Ā The whole āI am a straight man and Iām very straight and look at that butt straight Iām straightā thing is already exhausting becauseĀ I get it. You donāt need to tell me this every five seconds.āĀ
The comments to this review are also super entertaining with gems like this:
āSo, if you knew that someone had drowned in the lake recently and their body was never found,Ā WHY WOULD YOU STILL GO SWIMMING IN THE LAKE? Especially ifĀ twoĀ people had. It wouldn't make you think, "Hey, maybe there's something dangerous in that lake?" This show has some of the least genre savvy people EVER. Like, for example, once this mysterious death thing shows up in aĀ sink, why would anyone want to take aĀ bathĀ or really ever fill any basin with water again? Seriously, is this the Bad Decision Olympics?ā
.
Here is an awesome review from Fangasm also
The Other Bill and Ted.
As No Man of God hits theaters and VOD following its Tribeca premiere in June, director Amber Sealey talks to Dominic Corry about her Ted Bundy two-hander and answers our Life in Film questions.
Amber Sealey has been very acknowledging of the fact that her new film is one of many to center around the horrific crimes of serial rapist and murderer Ted Bundy. As she outlined in her Tribeca Q&A with Letterboxd, one way she intended No Man of God to stick out from the pack was through the use of consciously silent background characters who represent Bundyās voiceless victims.
The structure and source of the film also help distinguish it from other Ted Bundy movies: No Man of God is based on the recordings of FBI agent Bill Hagmaier (played in the film by Elijah Wood), who was tasked with interviewing an incarcerated Bundy in the years leading up to his execution, in order to help determine whether or not he was criminally insane, which couldāve helped to remove Bundy from death row.
With many of Bundyās victims never officially attributed to the killer, Hagmaier also sought to draw confessions, and something resembling remorse, out of Bundy, to help bring closure to those victimsā families. As detailed in the film, much of which was taken directly from transcripts of the interviews, Bundy and Hagmaierās relationship was complicated, and the intimacy that develops between them informs No Man of God in often uncomfortable ways.
Luke Kirby and Elijah Wood in a scene from āNo Man of Godā.
Wood (also a producer on the film) and Luke Kirby turn in career-high work as Hagmaier and Bundy, respectively, while Sealey textures the film with some of the most emotive stock-footage montage sequences this side of The Parallax View. Among positive reactions to the film, Claira Curtis, in a four-star review, writes: āPerhaps one of the most successful elements lies in Amber Sealeyās uncentering of the āgeniusā moniker that has followed Bundy through his years of infamy.ā On the pairing of Wood and Kirby in the leading roles, Connor Ashdown-Ford notes that āthe chemistry between them both is so authentic itās darn right unsettlingā.
Unsettling is right. Late in the film, Sealey depicts a real-life TV interview that took place between Bundy and evangelical preacher/āauthor/āpsychologist James Dobson (played by stalwart character actor Christian Clemonson), who uses Bundy to forward his anti-pornography agenda. Throughout this scene, the camera lingers on a young female member of the TV crew (played by an uncredited Hannah Jessup) as she silently reacts to being in Bundyās presence. Emblematic of Sealeyās aforementioned philosophy in constructing the film, itās a moment that appears to be having an impact on audiences, as detailed in Nolan Barthās review: āShe might have one of my favorite performances of this year? She shows us fascination, guilt, disgust and fear in like only 30 seconds of screen time. Give her an Oscar. Please.ā
In an awkward incident that represents a perhaps unanticipated effect of there being so many contemporaneous movies with the same subject matter, director Joe Berlinger (Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, the Paradise Lost trilogy), who recently directed both the Zac Efron-starring scripted Ted Bundy biopic Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile and the documentary Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, sent an email to Sealey ahead of No Man of Godās Tribeca premiere about remarks she had made while discussing how her film differentiated itself from the existing Ted Bundy movies. He felt she had accused him of glorifying Bundy. After Sealey took the exchange public, she explained to Variety that she had never singled out Berlingerās films in any of her remarks.
In a conversation with Letterboxd, Sealey delves into her approach to No Man of God, and talks about some of her filmic inspirations.
āNo Man of Godā director Amber Sealey.
There is really effective and creepy use of stock-footage montages in this film. Sometimes you see that sort of thing at the beginning of a film, but itās interesting that you keep going back to them after using them in the opening credits. What was the thinking in using those montages and how did you select the footage? Amber Sealey: The thinking for those was a couple things: One, we donāt leave the prison, and I wanted [the audience] to know a little bit whatās going on outside, in terms of the cultural zeitgeist, like whatās the tone of the time? What movies are popular? What books are popular? What are people wearing? I wanted to have there be a kind of cultural touchstone outside of the prison, but at the same time I wanted it to represent potentially a little bit of what was going on inside Billās mind. So the story of the montages as they go on, it gets a little bit more fucked up, for lack of a better word, for Bill, inside of his head.
We were originally going to shoot the crowd scenes [of protesters outside the prison] and recreate them and then because of Covid restrictions, we couldnāt do that anymore. So then I knew we were going to be using archival footage for the crowd, and I didnāt want the archival crowd footage to suddenly jump out as being so different from the rest of our film. Weāre shooting on an ARRI camera, [so itās] not going to look like a Hi-8 from the 1980s. I needed to incorporate this look, this ā80s grainy look into the rest of the movie so that it feels like itās part and parcel of the film, part of the storytelling.
We got [the footage] in different ways. I have an old friend that Iāve known since I was like, two, he lived next door to me, and my cousin, they both had video cameras in the ā80s and would film everything. So some of that footage is old family footage of their family or friends. Thereās a couple shots in there of my neighbors when I was growing up. Then some of it, we did a lot of research on [stock-imagery services] Getty and Pond5, just finding archival footage that we could use that really told the story that we wanted to tell with the montages. It was a lengthy process finding all of that footage for sure.
What was Bill Hagmaierās involvement in the film? Bill is an executive producer on the film, so he was very involved. The transcripts of those conversations between Bill and Ted, we got from Bill. Bill gave us so much great stuff to work withāthe newer FBI files that he was allowed to share with us and the recordings, and when the script was originally written it was written based off of those recordings, and the writer originally spoke to Bill and then when I came on board, I talked to him and then I changed the script, even more from conversations I had with him. He was just a resource.
Almost every [character] you see on screen, those are real people, and he hooked us up with a lot of those real people. I spoke with the prison guards and the wardens and all of that. Then he was just a resource in terms of like, I would ask him, āwhat color were your shoes?ā āDid you carry this kind of briefcase or that kind of briefcase?ā Because it was important to me that all that production-design stuff was really authentic. I liked to know, like, āwhat were your haircuts like then, Bill?ā So he was available to talk about the emotional side of things, and then the real just humdrum kind of things. Heās just a lovely guy, heās really supportive of me and of the film and he just wanted to be accessible as much as he could and he was. Heās a very humble, generous person.
Aleksa Palladino plays civil-rights attorney Carolyn Lieberman to Luke Kirbyās Ted Bundy.
What films did you watch, or cite as reference points in preparation for No Man of God? Literally hundreds and hundreds of movies. When Iām looking for my creative look, I just watched so many films, and a lot of old films. Iād have to go back and look at my look book to tell you all of them but I pull images from the weirdest places. But once I get past figuring out the creative look of the film, I donāt then like to watch the movies a lot because I try to really make it its own thing and I worry too much that Iāll be copycatting other artists and I want to try [to] avoid that.
Whatās your favorite true-crime movie? Oh god, what was the one about the guy who like, went to the bathroom and confessed, accidentally? He forgot his mic was on? Do you remember that one?
The Jinx? Yeah. Even though itās a documentary, Iām going to go with that.
Whatās your favorite big-screen serial-killer performance? It has to be Luke Kirby. Luke Kirby as Bundy.
What was the first horror film you saw? My dad had me watch Cat People when I was nine. Does that count?
The Val Lewton one? The ā80s one.
Oh, the Paul Schrader one? Yes! The Paul Schrader one.
Nastassja Kinski in Paul Schraderās āCat Peopleā (1982).
When you were nine years old? Yeah. I also watched Blue Velvet when I was nine. Oh wow, thank you Dad.
Whatās the most disturbing film youāve ever seen? Most disturbing, hmmā¦ Kids.
What film made you want to become a filmmaker? It was Michael Winterbottomās Nine Songs. My first film was a reaction to that movie. Iām a huge Winterbottom fan. Thatās a great movie, but also it advertises itself as being a real relationship and real sex and I watched it and I was like, well thatās not like anyā¦ it was like two models, you know? Their sex scenes were like a perfume ad and I was like, well thatās not what real sex looks like for real people. I made my first feature after that.
Whatās your go-to comfort movie? Oh, so many, letās think. The Proposal. I love Trainwreck. I really like rom-coms, like if Iām sick or something, Iāll watch rom-coms. Roman Holiday, stuff like that.
Whatās a classic that you couldnāt get into or that you think is overrated? Umm. Star Wars. Iām trying to think, thereās something else that I just donāt likeā¦ everyone loves that singing movie. Whatās that singing movie that when Moonlight won the Oscar, it got announced?
La La Land. Yeah. I was not into that.
What filmmaker living or dead do you envy/admire the most? Yorgos Lanthimos. Or Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
If you were forced to remake a classic movie, what would you remake? Grease.
Who would be in the cast of your Grease remake? Oh I don't even know but it would be much darker. It would still be a musical and still be funny, but much darker.
I would like to see that movie. I would too.
Underfell: File Name not Edgy Enough #26
Chapter 26: Misery
WARNING: I WANT NO RESPONSIBILITY OVER SPOILING THINGS FOR OTHERS. THAT BEING SAID, THIS IS HOW FILE NAME NOT FOUND WOULD FUNCTION IN THE AU OF UNDERFELL. BEFORE YOU READ THIS, UNLIKE THE NICE TIME OF UNDERTALE, THIS WORLD IS KILL OR BE KILLED. THIS STORY WILL BE GRAPHIC, GORY, USE SWEARS LIKE NOBODY'S BUSINESS, AND DEAL WITH SENSITIVE SUBJECT MATTERS. FOR EXAMPLE, THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE READ THE FILE NAME RELOCATED SPOOF WILL KNOW HOW I PICTURE THIS VERSION OF LYNSIE COMING TO THE UNDERGROUND. IT IS NOT AN ACCIDENT. IT IS NOT BECAUSE OF SOMETHING DUMB. IT IS BECAUSE SHE CHOOSES TO END HER LIFE. SO TAKE THIS WITH A GRAIN OF SALT. I MADE IT BECAUSE I NEEDED TO LET SOME OF THIS EDGINESS OUT OF MYSELF. WHICH I GUESS MAKES UNDERFELL LYNSIE EVEN MORE TRUE TO WHO I REALLY AM. ANYWAY, ENJOY. ^_^
[HOTLAND: LEVEL 2 MOMENTS BEFORE GOING LIVE]
Mettaton zooms through the air, the speed makes it hard to try to look for anything I can lock-on as a potential landmark. The worst part, I can't tell if Flowey is able to follow or can reach this far safely. Who am I kidding? Flowey has the best odds of making it around here without a scratch. Unlike my dumbass.
"THIS WILL DO."
He lands faster than expected. The shock shacks my insides uncomfortably. I gag trying to keep my stomach from flying out.
"SORRY, DARLING. I'LL ATTEMPT TO BE GENTLER IN THE FUTURE."
He puts me down, my legs buckle like a baby calf's but I manage to stand.
"N-No worries. Just...Just give me a moment."
He chuckles and gets ready to blast off again.
"SO CUTE. NOW LISTEN UP...HOTLAND IS LEVELED OUT IN THREE PARTS. WE WERE ON LEVEL ONE. THIS IS LEVEL TWO. FROM THIS ROOM, MAKE A RIGHT AND CONTINUE ONWARD. YOU'LL NEED TO REACH THE ELEVATOR TO PROCEED. THINK YOU CAN DO THAT?"
I wave at him.
"Go right. Got it. *heavy sigh* Um...Are there more vents?"
He doesn't say anything.
"Metta?"
"TOODLES!"
He blasts off and I roar our swears. Oh well. No point fussing on that. If I'm lucky Flowey will have heard my shouting and come to help me. But this room...The path leading out is glass. The land isn't connected. Flowey would have to dive deeper to find a joining point, most likely it would be too deep and the heat harmful. I need to leave and not look down. I take a step but fumble, grabbing a random signpost to stop the fall.
"Damn it...Is this what jet-lag is?"
The sign's writing makes me curious.
[Art Club: Meet here! Next meeting: October 10th, 8PM]
Huh? Wait...What is the date and time? Argh! I have no sense for time anymore. Toriel has an out-of-date calendar that she refuses to change which doesn't help and the cellphone had the closest thing to a clock yet there's no telling if it was on time.
"Ahhhh!!! I'm late!!! I'm late!!! I'm so sorry!!!"
From seemingly out of nowhere, a doughy butterscotch colored monster in a black fedora and vest comes rushing towards this spot with papers fluttering away from him. He's in such a damn hurry that he trips and ends up crashing, skidding to a stop inches from my feet.
"*grumble* Son of a..."
He picks himself up and quickly grabs what papers he can. He looks odd. I'm getting weird neck-bread vibes off him. It's probably the fedora. Maybe if he took it off and let his brown hair free...What the fuck, am I thinking like a girl? Ewww! Stupid girl thoughts! That's my once per month. No more.
"So stupid! Why am I so clumsy? I hate being such a klutz!"
Poor guy.
"Need some help?"
He flinches. Did...Did he just realize I was here?
"W-Who are you? This is my spot! Get out!"
"Whoa! Chill. No need to be so harsh, kangaroo-boy."
His eyes widen.
"Kangaroo..."
Ah...shit. I know that look by now. My blue soul comes out.
"I'M A BUTTERDRAGON!!"
[WRONG ENEMY !? begins to play in the background.]
...Fuck my life. Wait...What the fuck is a butterdragon?
[You're blocked in angrily!]
"I come here to find something to draw. And what do I find? Some ignorant bitch that wouldn't know a masterpiece if it smacked her in the face!"
Is he referring to himself?
"It's time someone taught you a lesson! Consider it a gift. Let me look in my vest!"
He spins around and swings at me with his tail. It's coated in light blue magic. Fine. I don't move. It turns orange. I jump over it. It turns blue for two more swipes before turns around.
[HP āāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāā 40/40]
"Oh! Whoops! That had to hurt! So sorry, I must have..."
He freezes seeing nothing happened to me.
"You...You're fine?"
I shrug. No point opening my mouth. He talks enough for the both of us.
[The enemy looks nervous.]
"Ummm, I...I couldn't find anything I want to give away. *softer* Not that I wanted to give you anything. *normal* Wait, wait! *laugh* I've got my notebook! I can draw you a picture in it! I'm quite the artist, you know. I'll draw you a GREAT picture!!!"
"It's not your turn."
He flinches.
"Oh...Right."
I look at my options.
Time and space...How the hell does he have negative defense?! That's a thing?!
"My turn!"
My thoughts are broken. He turns around to draw in his notebook, attacking once more with his tail. Blue swish. Orange swish. Blue swish. Blue swish. Orange swish. Orange swish.
[HP āāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāā 40/40]
Again he doesn't understand how I got away with no damage. Dude, I can't help that you're attack is obviously telegraphed.
[The enemy looks anxious.]
"S...sorry...The drawing didn't come out very well. Wait! I know the problem! I just have to find a better piece of paper for it!"
"I'm not sure that's how drawing works. But you do you."
"I don't want your pity."
Was worth a shot considering the way this fight's going.
"I'll settle on a draw-ing if that's better."
I emphasize the pun with a teasing wink. He gets a little frazzled.
"Uh...Don't do that again. Like...ever."
Screw it. I want to have some fun.
"Why? Are you gonna pun-ish me?"
His right eye twitches.
"Stop it."
"I have an ink-ling this is getting to you. But trust me...You paint seen nothing yet."
Getting frustrated he yanks at his hair before turning around and chucking crumpled balls of paper at me from over his shoulders. Finally, something I need to dodge that will take effort. Each toss has three balls and he does this ten times. The dude's wasting perfectly fine paper. Shameful.
[HP āāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāā 40/40]
I'm starting to think he's getting bothered by his inability to hurt me.
[The enemy looks perturbed.]
Called it.
"N-None of my papers are good enough to use..."
[SPARE selected.]
"It's not the tools. They don't create. They are but aids. It's the artist. Their skill and heart. That is key. Anyone can draw. It's as easy as breathing. But if you stress out and push too hard, if you forget to enjoy yourself...Then even what you'd call your masterpiece will never be good enough."
He looks at me funny.
"My advice, Mr. Butterdragon...Don't try to make something as others expect it to be made. Create something as you want it to be. Only then will you be happy with it. I would know. I'm a dabbler at doodling and there's something so...interesting...in being able to take a pencil and transfer an image that you only saw in your head to paper. Though I can never seem to get hands just right."
I look at my hands.
"Weird flesh sticks. Why are you so hard to draw?!"
He thinks for a moment. But then...
"THAT'S IT!!! I know what I can do!! I'll use my magic pencil! It has to be under some of these papers somewhere!!!!"
I take it he's still bent on attacking to prove he can draw. He goes back to tossing paper and by this point, I found a spot to just stand in where nothing falls near, so I wait till he's done.
"Here! I got it! My magic pencil is amazing! Everything I draw with it looks..."
[HP āāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāā 40/40]
This fight is so boring. I mean, I'm grateful to not have my ass kicked or beaten within moments of death's door, but...Is he really trying? Froggits try harder than this.
"Why aren't you hurt?!"
I cover my mouth in a yawn.
"Dude, can you let me spare you already? I need to get to level three before Mettaton has a fit."
[SPARE selected.]
He didn't like hearing this.
[The enemy taps his fingers together like jackhammers.]
"I'll show you. I'LL SHOW YOU ALL!! I AM A REAL ARTIST!!"
With pencil in hand, he scribbles into the air and much to my understanding of reality he adds two horned demons doodles to fight on his side.
[DOODLEBOG ā HP: 100 ATK: 8 DEF: 999 ā Art lets your wildest fantasies come to life!]
"Like I was saying...Anything I draw with this pencil becomes COMPLETELY REAL! But in your case, a little too real!"
I can't help the odd smirk that crawls across my lips.
"Finally..."
I stretch and pop some joints.
"I was starting to fall asleep. Show me what you've been holding back. Let the creativity flow!"
Both Doodlebogs launch eight doodle orbs in circle formations at me. The good news, there's room to move and enough spacing to do some fun maneuvering. The bad news...It's still freaking easy! They shoot this move twice before their turn ends. And still...
[HP āāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāā 40/40]
I'm disappointed. And so is he.
"What...How...?!"
[The enemy is confused.]
I shake my head. Seems that's all he's got. Though, to his credit, those drawings need to go. But how do I do that? Hmmm...Maybe...
[ACT selected.]
[New options available.]
[SOMETHING]
What's this? Oh...Oh hell yeah.
[DRAW selected.]
"W-Wait...You can't..."
I grab my soul, not sure what else I'm to use, and trace out a large cat that glows like my soul.
"Sketch-kitty, pounce the Doodlebog on the left!"
The cat does as commanded, pouncing at the Doodlebog and they tussle off the side to the heat death below. He panics.
"How dare you use art against me! Don't just stand there, kill her!"
The remaining Doodlebog fires the same attack as before but done three times in rapid secession. I harder move yes, but one that still leaves spots open wiggle on through.
[HP āāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāā 40/40]
[The enemy is desperate.]
"H-Hey now...There's no need to do anything crazy. I-I shouldn't have attacked you. That was dumb. W-We good?"
Huh...I don't know if he's being truthful. I try to use MERCY but the button doesn't push in. Something is locking it. I wonder if it's because of the doodle? Is it affecting the battle conditions? To be safe, I'll return things to how they were.
[DRAW selected.]
"You're cheating! You have to be! No one can be this good!"
I roll my eyes while tracing out a massive snake.
"Sketch-snake, put the squeeze to the Doodlebog."
It strikes with the speed of a viper and coils the doodle like a constrictor. The doodle fights back, clawing at the sketch. The sketch knows what its mission is. It throws itself and the doodle over the edge, so now it's only the two of us. He is at a loss what to do.
[The enemy uses a hypnotizing 3D-tush-wiggle attack. Smells... furry.]
I think he's freaked out and out of options. His strongest move, an insane trump card, and I not only countered it but bested it.
[The enemy is apologizing to its visions of the Reaper.]
...What?
"I've messed up. I've really messed up. Oh no. I'm so dead! No...No. I won't let you kill me."
"Dude, I'm clearly not trying to kill you."
"I won't let art die!"
"And you're not listening."
"I'll use this regular pencil! I'll use 100% of best! There is no way you'd kill the maker of such a fine piece!"
He turns around and scribbles furiously. His tail swipes quickly and paper balls fly like crazy. This creates difficulty because trying to dodge the balls is made harder when trying to either stand still for light-blue attacks or move for the orange ones. Orange tail, orange tail, blue tail, blue tail, orange tail, and blue tail. This is how he should've been going at me from the start. It's a good attack.
[HP āāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāā 27/40]
"Are you ready!? I just finished! Here's your picture!"
He's so proud of it that he doesn't even notice that he finally did damage to me. The picture is a heart.
"What do you think!? It's a representation of your deepest essence... It's great, right!?"
I don't say a word. What did he mean by that? How is a heart my deepest essence? Is it a picture of my soul and souls are the essence of life? How the fuck did he being about so much thought with a heart?! My silence has him become uncomfortable.
"... (They think my art is terrible.) Well! I'll leave you with that thought! Goodbye! See you later! Sayonara! Nice knowing ya! Hasta la vista. ... I should leave."
He attempts to leave but he freezes when I quickly grab his tail.
"Um..."
"That image...You poured your heart into and it shows. It made me think. Art does that. It makes you think and feel. You did that to me. ...10 out of 10."
His eyes widen.
"R-Really?"
I nod and let his tail go...only to get a sappy hug from the butterball.
"Thank you!"
I made his day. He was trying to kill me and is now hugging me over a compliment. I think this is over.
[YOU WON!]
[You earned 0 XP and 318 gold.]
Holy shit! I'm rich!
The battle music fades out as he lets me go. My soul returns to me.
"Did you...Did you really like it?"
I nod.
"You gave it your all. That makes it special. Keep that spirit and don't be afraid to try other styles. You'll be amazed at what you can do if you try."
"Like your animals?"
"Animals have always been easy for me. It's people that are my weak-link. Um...Can I see that pencil for a sec?"
He hands me his notebook and normal pencil, to which I make two different drawings. One, a traditional European dragon spouting flame. This is my specialty, I can make these almost with my eyes closed. But the second one is my try at an anime version of myself. I use the eraser a lot on the face, hands, and chest. It never looks right to me once I'm okay with another part of the body. Yet I know I can't spend ages on this so I hand it over when I believe it looks okay.
"See what I mean now?"
"What are you talking about? These are great."
"Exactly..."
He's confused.
"Even when it's good, I still think I suck. But it's that negativity that spurs me to try harder. One day, I shall get those parts down and be happy with it without erasing whole bits out of frustration or doubt in ability. So...yeah...Keep those. Let them help you. Inspire you to be better in spite of others and yourself. Refuse to give up. And never surrender."
He gives me a funny look and I rub the back of my head with a nervous laugh.
"Heh...I have no idea where I was going with that. I tend to ramble when trying to be positive."
A small smile comes to him as he takes a few steps past me.
"I think I get what you're saying. If it's all the same to you...I think I want to be alone with my thoughts for a bit. Might see what ideas come."
I smirk.
"Take care, buddy. May the Muses inspire you to greatness."
I leave the butterdragon to his thoughts and not look down at the glass path that must be crossed. Yet it's doing so that alarms my brain. The land is not solid rock. The land is being supported by thick metal pipes and trussed beams that don't look like they're meant to be used here. I'm conflicted, I feel safe and unease at the same time. It also doesn't help I don't have Flowey with me. I need him. I don't like proceeding without my bro. So...
"Flowey! Bro, I'm up over here! Hurry up!"
Not expecting a response, least of all right away, I aim to head out slowly in hopes that he'll catch up to me before I really need him. But the path actually branches like a 4-way intersection and I get confused. Left is probably back to level one but what's the forward path? I shrug and check it out. Not like I have a killer robot to appease because I'm on TV. Thankfully, it's an empty spot of land. Scratch that. An empty spot of land with some trash on it.
[There's an apron lying on the ground.]
Really? That scrap's an apron?
I inspect the ragged thing and find it's in better shape than it looks.
[Will you take it or leave it?]
This option leads me to believe it's a human item. Probably pairs with this frying pan. Yes, I want it.
[You got the Splattered Apron.]
...Do I wanna equip it? Ugh...I tie the apron around my waist but backwards so it covers my ass.
[You equipped the Splattered Apron.]
[You gain 11 Defense.]
[Are the splotches from food, an enemy, or the former wearer? You don't want to know. Heals 1 HP every other turn.]
Wait...Did it say...?!
[HP: 40 ATK: 45 DEF: 38]
Holy shit! Score!
"So...Does that only work in fights?"
[HP āāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāā 28/40]
Huh. Guess not. Yet it said every other turn so who knows what that counts as.
I leave to continue all while paying half-attention to my HP. 1 point healing is better than nothing, though it's gonna be a while before I'm healed completely.
It's warm on this level. Still hot but not as bad as level one. Digital cords pulsate with energy from deep down to high above me. And in the distance...a massive mechanical structure. It sits in the lava like a slumbering leviathan. Imposing, mysterious, and giving off the vibes of "STAY THE FUCK AWAY". I better not have to go there.
After a short stroll, I come upon an obstacle or, as monsters put it, a puzzle. There are two conveyor belts, one going forward and the other back towards me. The forward one has three of those thick metal pipes near it and each pipe has a switch. At the end, there's what looks to be a Tesla Coil set up to prevent safe passing. Putting the bits together is easy. I step on the belt and keep walking, flipping the switches as I go. The third flip turns the current off and I can progress.
I regret this.
Literally forty feet away I'm met by those fucking vents. However...beside the vents is a large conveyor belt made of three merged ones. That's moving at the same speed as the one I was just on. Idea time. I dash jump across the belts. Leaping just in case someone somewhere decides to mess with the speed. Lucky me, no dick moves were made and I avoided doing my scarier backup plan of climbing on the support trusses. At least the path is clear now, which is good.
The heat begins to climb as I approach pumping stacks of hot gas. It makes the air thick and hard to breathe. The sooner I get past these things the better. Part of me questions why I don't hoof it on a crawl and then I have to remind that part that the land is inclining upward so it's bloody pointless. My throat is drying out, my lungs burn, and my eyes sting even with the tears trying to soothe the pain. Even the sounds of gears grinding in the background is starting to irritate my senses. But all this just makes me strive forward more to get back to some form of normalcy. Augh...What's my HP at now?
[HP āāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāā 32/40]
Not bad. Not bad at all.
"Keep moving, slowpoke."
My blurry eyes spy a white speck among all the orange-brown.
"Bro?"
Something wraps around my wrist and pulls me slowly, leading me like a child helps an elder cross the road. Soon the air is clear and wiping my eyes lets me see Flowey. A very welcoming sight indeed.
"Bro!"
"Good to see you too."
"How did you get up here? The land is broken."
"Not all of it. I pretty much climbed up one high point, crossed over to another, and repeat till I got here. Did you forget how nimble I can be?"
I smack my forehead making him snicker.
"Sometimes it scares me to think how you've managed to not die."
He gets a chuckle out of me.
"Same."
We move on...only to be blocked by two heavily armored guards. One is a rabbit or hare and the other is more of a dragon than butterball was. Adorning fierce, brutal, and intimidating black armor bearing the blood-red Deltarune insignia. On their helms, shoulders, and wrists are jagged threatening spikes. But the real danger that has my attention are the very large swords.
"Are you shitting me?"
"They...aren't supposed to be here."
I look at Flowey funny and he flinches.
"I mean...They don't usually..."
"*mumble* Timeline bullshit. *normal* Fuck it...Yo! Can you two move? We need to reach level three...please?"
I'm sure that saved it from all my attitude.
"Human..."
Nothing good has ever happened to me when someone says "human".
"You're late."
Oh. Well, that's different.
"For...?"
They point their swords at me.
"Your funeral."
"Really? Was that the best you could come up with?"
The rabbit shrugs.
"I thought it was pretty tough."
The dragon punches his arm.
"I told you it was weak."
"It's not like we had a lot of time to come up with something better."
"Right. All the direction Mettaton gave us was 'stall her' while he does stupid crap."
"Let's just get this over with before the Captain finds out."
They rush towards me...then stop. But not a normal stop. They're frozen in place. I look at Flowey, he's stuck in mid-sink into the ground. The hell is going on? It's as if...as if time stopped?
"Sans? Sans, is this you? Where are you?"
White noise, like static on a TV. It pierces my ears as if it were stabbing my very brain. Covering my ears does nothing to stop it. I drop to my knees.
"SaŅnsĶ..Ģ."
A voice barely solidifies in the sounds assaulting my hearing.
I muster the strength to turn my head and am confronted by a grayed-out monster with a blacked-out face holding a smaller face in its hand. The face looks at me with a small creepy smile. My eyes widen. The face spoke. And it speaks in rhyme. What the fuck?!
"What the hell are you?"
This...This shit right here triggers something primal in me...I get genuinely freaked out. Fleeing like a puppy that just met the big noisy vacuum for the first time. And yeah, this was an overreaction. I've dealt with some insane shit at this point, you'd think I'd be hardened like a soulless speck of dirt. But no. That made me too unsettled and any tough wall I had crumbled. I zoom past the few other frozen in time monsters along the way till I reach the elevator. I spam hit the button, praying it will ignore the fact time is dead and let me in something that I can pretend is safer than out here.
*BING*
A sound other than static? There is a god!
The doors shift open and a grayed-out bird monster with terrible posture along with a grayed-out small humanoid monster stop me in my tracks.
[SNOWDIN: Skeleton House in present time]
They watch as the human and flower are confronted by the two Royal Guards. And of course, they do as they've been trained. Attack the human. But something weird happens. The guards begin to attack and the screen of the TV glitches into static before the picture returns. Only now the guards have stopped their action and the flower, which was retreating from danger, pops back out in confusion along with everyone else. The human is gone. It happened within the blink of an eye. One second she was there and the next she's not. And now the screen cuts to a "We Are Experiencing Technical Difficulties" image. What is going on?
[HOTLAND: LAB]
Undyne and Alphys are equally as perplexed as everyone else that's tuned in.
"Alphys, where did the human go?"
Undyne irritatedly asks through her teeth. On her end, Alphys is switching through camera feeds like crazy.
"I'm looking! I'm looking!"
The screen swaps from camera to camera and multiple different angles. But there's nothing. Sure, there are monsters. Some just going about their lives. Some slacking around. Even an embarrassing shot of a Pyrope shoving a sandwich into the top of a Vulkin. But no sign of the human on level two.
"Where are you, damn it?!"
"Stop!"
Undyne's shout makes Alphys jump.
"Go back five clicks."
And so she does. The feed is an odd far shot from the gas stacks. It can just barely view the guards let alone the flower who suddenly ducks away. The guards seem even more confused.
"What are we looking for?"
Undyne points at the screen and Alphys sighs.
"If I can't see it on my end, you pointing from a distance does nothing for me!"
Undyne growls.
"Look up, genius!"
Alphys leers at the fish-woman before leering at the view she has on her monitor. Due to the far away placement of the camera, it can see up to the platform of level three. And there, dangling over the side, is a pale white arm that stands out over the red platform and gold LED lights scheme.
"The hell...?"
She switches to the level three cameras.
"Ha! I knew I saw something."
With the better view, they now see the human face-down just a few feet from the elevator.
"How the hell did she get up there?"
Alphys gets out her phone and sends a quick text. When there's no reply she presses a button and a moment later is sent a reply. A few messages are sent as Mettaton zooms on screen.
"What? Why's the tin can there now?"
Undyne is out of the loop as usual.
"Who else do you know can zip over there as fast?"
Mettaton pulls the human to the center of the path, away from a stupid falling to death, and checks over her seemingly lifeless body. Her eyes are open and empty as if someone replaced her peepers with billiards cue balls that glow. Marks on her arms look like bruising but weren't there before nor gained in her earlier fight. Then...Alphys gets a text.
"Hmmm..."
"What's up?"
"Vital signs are still going but her breathing has stopped."
She texts back to Mettaton.
"So...She's dead?"
"No. Not yet at least. According to Mettaton, her HP is full and not depleting. However, if she doesn't start breathing, her HP should drain and she will die."
"Then wha...?"
"Look at the TV, dear."
Undyne looks back at the screen to see Mettaton performing chest compressions in patterns.
"With her heart still pumping it means all other functions are still working. It's likely something happened in whatever event that caused her to get up there to give her trauma. The trauma probably made her brain fail to send the right signals to her lungs and thus, she's in respiratory arrest. So I've instructed Mettaton to force her body to restart her breathing manually with basic CPR."
They watch the robot press into her chest for a good couple of minutes before the human suddenly bolts up violently. Mettaton restrains the hysterical woman as the life returns to her eyes, sight restored settles her down some but she appears terribly shaken.
"Ask him if he can get her to tell him what happened."
"Already sent and awaiting reply."
Mettaton appears to speak with her but she either says very little or nothing at all. She merely holds her self in an attempt to cease her trembling and looks out at what bit of the CORE is still visible from that point.
"Huh...He says she isn't telling. At most, she said it's nothing and it just happens sometimes."
"Super vague and avoiding the subject? That kind of shit ain't normal."
Alphys agrees but it's not like they have the human in custody to interrogate for answers. She sends the text.
"The hell?"
Mettaton offers some concern and encouragement before blasting off, leaving the human alone.
"Why's he leaving her?!"
"He did what was needed. Now the show can continue as planned."
Undyne glares.
"That's twice now. You could've let her die."
"I still need more data. Something odd happened and I need to figure it out."
Undyne huffs softly.
"Fine. You know...You can only string someone along for so long before that string breaks, Alphys."
The lizard-woman chuckles.
"Worried about the human? That's cute."
"I wasn't talking about the human."
Undyne guzzles her remaining ramen and Alphys isn't sure how to respond.
"For your sake, the human better be worth all this effort."
She lifts her bowl.
"More."
[HOTLAND: LEVEL 3 BEFORE GOING LIVE]
Static. Everything is static. Static is all I see and hear. I can't feel anything. Am I dead? Is this what death is? If it is...It's incredibly boring. At least Hell would have a wicked soundtrack to drone out to while being tortured. Suddenly, I feel something. And it hurts. Like something is bouncing on my chest and pauses a bit before doing it again for longer.
Please...Leave me alone...Let me be...I don't want to go back...Don't make me go back...Please...
"*gasps and coughs*"
My lungs burn in this reawakening but my sight is still static. Purgatory. Pain before Heaven. The sins must be suffered away. This must be what's happening. Hands. I feel hands and panic, stress levels at critical. I take a swing at where I think they are.
"DĢĶ”oÅĶ'ĢĶt ĢØĢĶtoĶĶuchĢ·ĢĶ ĶmeĶĶ!Ģ“ĢµĶ"
There's hesitation before more force is used and I'm pinned to what I assume is a floor. I thrash harshly.
"CALM...I...LYNSIE."
A voice? A normal voice?
"DON'T...ME...RELAX."
The struggling I was doing ends. And as I settle down the static that had blinded me subsides. My location is unknown. But I know the one holding me down.
"M-Metta?"
Seeing I'm normal, Mettaton helps me get back on my feet yet I'm unsettled by...things.
"ARE YOU ALRIGHT, DARLING? WHAT HAPPENED?"
Flashes of memory flicker in my head. Those...things...Followers of Gaster...The things they did...
I hold myself and fight the tears trying to come to my eyes. I don't say a thing.
"LYNSIE...HOW DID YOU GET UP HERE? WHY DID I FIND YOU NOT BREATHING?"
I rub my eyes.
"I need my phone. *shaky inhale* I gotta talk to my mom."
"YOU KNOW I DON'T HAVE IT. AND IF I DID, I'M STILL UNSURE YOU WOULDN'T CALL OUT TO YOUR FRIENDS."
He's not wrong. I wasn't going to call Toriel. I was going to give Sans nightmares with the shit done to me.
"NOW COME ON. YOU CAN TELL ME WHAT'S WRONG."
"...N-Nothing's wrong. This...This just happens sometimes."
He's not buying it. I'm doing a piss poor attempt to play off that I'm fine.
"DARLING, YOU'RE OBVIOUSLY NOT FINE AND ABOUT TO CRY. JUST TALK TO ME. WHAT HAPPENED? YOU VANISHED FROM SIGHT AND ENDED UP HERE AT THE START OF LEVEL THREE COMPLETELY UNCONSCIOUS."
I don't say a word.
"DID SOMEONE USE MAGIC ON YOU? IS YOUR SOUL OKAY?"
I flinch at the mentioning of my soul and refuse any further interaction.
"LYNSIE...?"
I refuse to look at him. He sighs.
"IF IT MEANS ANYTHING, DUE TO TIME CRUNCHING, THE THIRD ACT WAS CANCELED. BETWEEN YOUR STALLING FROM HEIGHTS, ALL THESE RANDOM FIGHT ENCOUNTERS, AND EVENTS OF THE FIRST AND SECOND ACT...CHANGES IN THE PROGRAM HAVE BEEN MADE. HEH...ORIGINALLY, THE THIRD ACT WAS GOING TO HAVE YOU DEFUSE A SERIES OF BOMBS PLACED AROUND THE AREA WITHIN A TIME LIMIT. YET EVEN I THOUGHT THAT WAS UNFAIR. THAT AND THE SCRIPT FOR IT WAS JUST AWFUL. NO WAY AM I DISGRACING MYSELF WITH SUCH A POORLY DIRECTED SHOW."
I guess that is some good news. It's probably why he had those guards posted there to stall me.
"BUT...I DO HAVE SOME BAD NEWS."
This gets me to look at him.
"FROM HERE, IN THE NEXT ROOM YOU WILL FIND A SEEMINGLY CHARMING SPIDER NAMED MUFFET. SHE'S A CUNT."
Well, that escalated quickly.
"SHE'S THE LEADER OF THE SPIDERS IN THE UNDERGROUND AND RUNS A SUPPOSED BAKERY. IT'S A FRONT. SHE'S AN EXTORSHINISH. SHE'LL SAY AND DO ANYTHING IF IT MEANS SHE'LL GET GOLD. CLAIMS THE MONEY IS NEEDED TO SAVE THE SPIDERS IN THE RUINS OR SOMETHING STUPID LIKE THAT."
"It sounds like you don't like her very much."
"NO, NOT REALLY. I COULD CARE LESS WHAT SHE DOES. THE THING THAT PISSES ME OFF IS THAT SHE PREYS ON MY WORKERS, KILLS THE ONES THAT CAN'T PAY HER OUTRAGEOUS FEES, AND, WORST OF ALL, SHE REFUSED TO DEAL WITH ME!"
I tilt my head.
"I HAVE TRIED TIME AND TIME AGAIN TO GET HER TO SELL FOOD UNDER MY BRAND. BUT SHE SAYS MY NAME WOULD ACTUALLY MAKE HER LOSE GOLD. SERIOUSLY? THE AUDACITY OF THAT BITCH. I PRACTICALLY OWN HOTLAND AND SHE HAS THE NERVE TO UTTER SUCH SHIT!"
His screen flashes for a moment before he calms down.
"YET DESPITE THAT...KNOWING YOU AND HOW YOU HANDLE DIFFICULT MONSTERS, I'M CONFIDENT YOU CAN GET BY HER WITH LITTLE ISSUE."
"...You have that much faith in me?"
He spins on his wheel.
"WOULD YOU TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED IF I SAY I DO?"
My dower expression answers him for me.
"WELL, IT WAS WORTH A TRY."
His wheel retracts to fly.
"WE WILL MEET AGAIN FOR THE FOURTH ACT...PROVIDED YOU SURVIVE THE SPIDERS. YOU'RE NOT AFRAID OF SPIDERS, ARE YOU?"
"I was when I was a kid. I got over it."
"GOOD. YOU SHOULD BE FINE THEN."
He comes over and, to my surprise, gives me a small embrace.
"I BELIEVE IN YOU, LYNSIE."
My throat tightens, I couldn't speak even if I wanted to. He takes off and I wait for when he's out of sight to breakdown.
[SNOWDIN: Skeleton House in present time]
The "We Are Experiencing Technical Difficulties" screen cuts away. The human has been located. She appears to be on a different level and is a wreck. Down on her hands and knees, sobbing intangible pleas. Something has happened and it wasn't good.
Toriel gasps softly.
"tori? what's wrong?"
She covers her mouth and points. Sans sees it now. Papyrus even spies it before Grillby. The hands. The harsh imprints darkening the snow colored skin.
"Those marks...They would sometimes appear in her sleep. Why are they there now?"
Grillby shoots a look at Sans and he decides to get his buddy off his back.
"she had those marks while with us too. but if you look closely, these marks are different. there's no hole in the palm. plus...there are two sets."
"HMMM...AN AMBUSH PERHAPS? BUT WHAT KIND OF MAGIC CAN ALLOW FOR SUCH A SNEAK ATTACK AND THEN VANISH ELSEWHERE?"
Grillby continues to leer at Sans.
"what?"
"Sounds like teleporting to me. Anyone you know can do that?"
Sans glares.
"no. only i can teleport."
"Are you sure?"
"yeah. i'm sure. knock it off."
Papyrus cocks his brow. This might require his attention if things escalate.
"I'll knock it off when you come clean."
"i ain't hiding shit."
"Bullshit. You've been holding back so much that even your brother doesn't know just how much you do. If you don't know, then you don't know, but if one thing we've figured about you tonight...It's that you hide what you know all the damn time. So you've got to give us something better if you want us to believe you."
Sans balls his fist.
"us? or you? don't start connecting dots to points that don't exist because you want answers that no one can give to make yourself feel better."
"Then tell me who it was that hurt her before. Maybe they know who did it this time."
That line. That line got heads to turn.
"Sans? You know who has been harming my child?"
It's times like these Sans wished he was able to RESET.
"no, i don't."
"That's not what you told me."
"i only said what i did to get you off my back. ya were all upset about the marks and..."
"Of course I was upset about the marks! What guy wouldn't?!"
Papyrus snarkily lifts a finger, admitting his lack of concern but not wanting to get involved in this.
"maybe instead of pointing fingers, you should question why she didn't tell ya about'em herself. because if she doesn't even tell her mom about shit like this, what makes ya think she tells me?"
Grillby had to pause at that.
"Is it that one of them hurt you?"
"What?"
"You're ignoring them, but that doesn't make them invisible to anyone else. Did they do this? Papyrus I can believe, but I have doubts on Sans. But if they did this to you..."
"They didn't. This is a whole different issue."
"Don't defend your abuser."
"I'm not defending shit. It's my problem, I can deal with it. Don't make this a big deal."
"It is a big deal!"
"*wince* You're hurting me."
"..."
"Like I said...That's a different issue that I will deal with. Not you. Are we clear?"
"Y-Yes."
Maybe Sans had a point. Knowing how others would react keeps one from talking about such things, especially when it's not a reaction that is easily dealt with. Toriel and Grillby have proven to overreact when it comes to the human. She probably thought it best to keep such pain to herself to avoid added damage. But still...Something didn't sit right with Grillby. Sans knew something. What it was he knew not.
"IF YOU'RE DONE WITH YOUR POINTLESS BICKERING, THE HUMAN IS ON THE MOVE NOW."
Attention once more fell back to the television.
[HOTLAND: LEVEL 3]
My body aches. The crying did little to ease me. Sure I vented, that's always good. But I don't feel any better for doing so. My arms stings. My soul throbs in agony. My every nerve demands relief that will never seem to come. I look at the bruises. I can still feel their hold. I don't know how long it happened for or how long after till I was found, yet I can still feel their filthy hands. It's too much. Make it stop!
I take my gloves off and dig my nails across the full stretch of my arms. I don't care about bleeding. I just want to stop feeling their hands. The strange energy begins to crackle around me as it did once before.
[HP āāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāā 20/40]
It...It finally went away. That's good. Now if only the memory could be removed. Can't claw my brain unfortunately. Oh well. Perhaps I'll find something to bash my head against. Won't that be fun?
I take my leave. Flesh under my now gloved nails and blood trickling down my arms, making a trail behind me.
A few short steps have me in a more inhabited spot. The monsters here give me strange looks. Maybe it's because of the self-mutilation. Or maybe it was spine chilling wailing. Or both. Or random other shit. Either way, I keep to myself and press onward.
"Oh, yoohoo, human~..."
Ah, fuck my life with a thirty-nine and a half foot pole!
"You look like you can use some healing items. Come, I don't bite...well...maybe ONE little nibble~."
...Why do I attract the kinky weirdos?!
This is the spider-lady Mettaton was talking about. She has periwinkle or lavender skin, five eyes, six arms, and two legs. She wears red rompers with yellow buttons in the front, a red ribbon across her chest, as well as large wild twin pigtails in her black hair tied by red bows. She is also holding two teacups with her top pair of hands and two teapots with her middle pair, her bottom pair of hands hide under her little table.
"Welcome to our parlor, dearie~. Interested in some spider pastries? All proceeds go to real spiders~. Check out the webs to make a purchase~."
I'm so not in the mood for this.
"Ms. Spider..."
"No need for formalities, dearie~. Call me Muffet."
"Muffet...I'm gonna be nice yet blunt. So I apologize in advance if I tick you off at any point because that's not my intent. *shaky inhale* I have been battered, beaten, abducted, blasted, and brought near death more than usual today. And normally, I'd roll with it and let you do this 'thing' it is you're gonna do...But not now."
She opens her mouth to speak and I slam my hands on the tabletop.
"I have just spent an ungodly amount of time trapped in that elevator over there having my soul violated by people that don't even exist anymore on this plane of reality. I have clawed my skin off to stop feeling their hands on me. So, please...Not now."
I can feel that energy get stronger. The odd display bugs her yet she continues.
"My, how dreadful. That's a terrible tale you tell, human. And such a silly one to explain your disappearing act."
My eye twitches. Does she...Does she think I made that up?
"That Mettaton is certainly putting more effort into his effects for this show. It's about time too. That metal moron can't act to save his batteries."
I want to hit her.
"Anyway...Can I interest you in some of my 100% all-natural treats? Food made by spiders, for spiders, of spiders!"
...Wait a second?
"Of spiders? So...You're killing your own kind...for pastries?"
She simply smiles innocently.
"...Are they at least dead or dying ones?"
Her giggle is not reassuring.
"Go on, dearie~. Have a nice donut and wash it down with some cider. You'll heal faster than ever before. And all for the low low price of 9999G...each."
My nerves are shot. Were they always called donuts and not doughnuts? What the fuck?!
"Lady, that is the biggest crock of shit I have ever had the misfortune to step in."
All of her eyes glare at me.
"Beg your pardon?"
"This same 'bake sale' is being done by the spiders in the Ruins. Do you wanna know what the prices are there? Donuts are 7G and Ciders are 18G. Where the hell do you get off charging that much for food that works on cannibalism?"
I point at her in judgment.
"You're sick, lady! This is fucked up."
She hisses at me.
"Seems humans are awfully stingy with money. Don't know a good deal when it's in their face."
I look at her cockeyed.
"Stingy with money? Bitch, did you not hear the words coming out of my mouth?!"
She laughs in my face.
"Ahuhuhuhu...You think your taste is too refined for our pastries, don't you, deary?"
"...Sure. Whatever. You're not listening anyway."
"Ahuhuhu...I disagree with that notion. I think your taste...Is exactly what this next batch needs!"
She stares at me creepily and licks her lips.
"Oh hell nah!"
I flip the table on her and run. She's not happy.
"Get back here!"
"Fuck you!"
I look back to see if she's following and crash into a guy.
"Hey, watch where you're going."
"Sorry. I was just..."
My blood runs cold seeing the monster I've bumped. This guy...This guy is a dead ringer for the creepy gray dude with the face in his hand. The only difference being he's in color.
"*scoff* Weirdo."
He walks to where Muffet is but I can't move. My heart begins pounding. Flashes of memory play before my eyes. I can't breathe fast enough. Gaster, for all the shit he does, isn't as bad as the Followers.
...Fuck. Well...I should make a last will. Because I'm gonna die.
*STATIC* DARLING? ARE YOU OKAY? YOU NEED TO KEEP MOVING.
Mettaton's voice in my ear causes the shackles of trauma to release me...for now.
I slap myself. Gotta focus. Do this and get to go home. Concentrate. Don't fuck up! The energy around me slowly dissipates.
"Human!"
Looking back I see Muffet coming at me.
"Someone's stealing from the register!"
Her concern for money outweighs her need to kill me and I use this to escape. Much to my annoyance, this part of the path ends with more of those damn vents and they of course split off into three ways, one being a big as hell closed door.
"...I fucking hate Hotland."
I sigh. Taking in the vent platforms and noting that the gap between them is the smallest size ever. No need to run, jump, or use them. I merely walk onto the next platform and can do so for all of them. I choose to take the right side first. Why not? Not like it makes a difference. It leads me to a conveyor belt that has three blue lasers. I ride it to the end without harm. I guess Metta's budget for puzzles is running low if this is what I have to deal with. This leads me to a familiar room with, what a surprise, the same shooting puzzle from the last time I had to unlock a big fucking door.
"Now this is just lazy."
I look for the instructions.
(Shoot the opposing ship!)
(You have just one shot.)
Well...Maybe that's something.
This puzzle has the blocks in a four by five state. Eleven blocks are solid and four can be moved around. The four moving blocks move all at once like they're connected. The open spaces are pretty fair if I have to give it some credit. I move to the right, up, right, down twice, right twice, down, left, down, and finally end it by firing through the clear path.
(CONGRATULATIONS!)
"Don't tell me it's the same on the other side."
I head out and take the other conveyor belt back to the vents, passing a random cactus in the process. I swear if this shit keeps up I'm going to lose my mind. No! No...I need to calm down and relax. I don't need the stress. My soul is in rough shape as is. Now it's at risk of damage without my conscious input. I wish I had my music. That would really help. Maybe a little Green Day or Linkin Park. Oh! My Chemical Romance!
*BONK*
It would seem I didn't pay attention and walked into the puzzle room, kicking the machine by accident.
(Shoot the opposing ship!)
(You have just one shot.)
"God dingle damn it bull honkery."
I hate copy & paste design. The board is larger, five by five. Ten solid blocks and six movable ones, everything else is empty space. Right, up, right, down twice, right, right/up, up/right, up twice, right, up, and fire.
(CONGRATULATIONS!)
"...I'm so sick of this crap it ain't even funny."
I shove my hands in my pockets and leave...only to see two diamond-headed monsters just hanging out, one light-purple and the other a super light-green. Did I really walk by them?
"I've been thinking about getting a sick skateboard."
"Really? That's cool I guess. ...So...What's your fave Mettaton Moment(TM)?"
"My fave Mettaton Moment(TM)? Right when everything looks the baddest, he poses dramatically. Like when he's on a cooking show and the eggs don't turn out right. But! Then he says...Even if you suck at cooking, you can always buy an MTT-brand Glamburger! Then he eats one! Everyone loves it!"
"...How does he eat it without a mouth?"
"Uhhh...well...Watch the show!"
"Well, my fave Mettaton Moment(TM) is when he beats up the heel-turning villains! Even if it's during what's supposed to be a quiz show. Oh! And I like when he tries on all kinds of different fashionable outfits! Even if it's during what's supposed to be a newscast."
I wonder if I can get a chuckle out of these two.
"Sounds like you two really know your stuff about Mettaton."
They turn to look at me, they look like teenagers based on their clothes.
"Totally."
"No one's a bigger fan than us."
"Oh yeah?"
"Yeah! He's currently broadcasting live. And with a Human! We can finally get to the surface!"
"On the surface, we'll be able to watch all kinds of TV...But, I bet none of those shows are as good as Mettaton's!"
"You don't say. Then...Could you describe this human? I don't want to miss seeing it."
The green one goes for his phone.
"Let me see if it's back on and we'll show you. Some crazy stuff happened and the feed cut off a bit ago."
I smile and wait for it. I can't read their faces, but it's very clear when the green one goes to his buddy and shows him the screen. Looks are shot at me. I merely give a friendly wave.
"Dude..."
"We're on TV!"
At least someone's happy about it.
"Wait...Then that means..."
"You're the human?"
I shrug.
"What...What happened to you?"
"You're like all messed up and junk."
I shrug again.
"You know...Messed up crud. Being human ain't all that and or fun. But don't worry about it. Just enjoy the show. Metta's doing his best to make it epic as hell."
I walk past them.
"Oh! Before I go...Don't copy any of the stuff aired at home. You'd probably get in trouble if you blast people for getting trivia wrong or use chainsaws while cooking."
I give a thumbs-up as I go. Vaguely hoping to look badass. With the door open it shouldn't be long till all this nonsense is over and I can go home. I wonder though...Can Flowey get up here? The floor is artificial, so I don't know if he can traverse it. I hope he's okay. Poor fella's probably losing his mind wondering where I went. Then again, he's a clever cookie and knows his way around the Underground better than anyone.
[The smell of cobwebs fills the air...]
Huh?
*sniff*
"What smells like freshly baked tarantulas?"
...Oh shit.
The room past the door is littered with webbing and spiders are dangling from the ceiling.
"...Fuck my life."
Smelling a trap I attempt to get through this room as fast as I can. But the webbing on the floor accumulates on my shoes and eventually, I'm unable to take a step. Struggling only made things worse.
"Ahuhuhuhu..."
Damn it! Damn it all to hell!!
"Did you hear what they just said? They said a human in tacky clothes will come through."
"Well, fuck you too."
"I heard that they hate spiders."
"What?!"
"I heard that they love to stomp on them."
"That is a bald-faced lie!"
"I heard that they like to tear their legs off."
"Slander! The levels of bullshit in here are off the charts!"
"I heard..."
Muffet comes down like a Charlotte's Web reject onto a large web. Smaller spiders dangle beside her and block the path ahead as well as behind me.
"...that they're incredibly stingy with their money. Ahuhuhuhu."
My fucks are all gone.
"You're mom was a hoe and ate your dad."
Her face blanks before burning with rage.
"You're fucking dead meat!"
[SPIDER DANCE begins to play in the background.]
My dull yellow soul comes out.
[Muffet traps you!]
"Oh, like this is fair. I can't move and you bring out a freaking gang. I mean, what are the damn rule anymore?!"
"Oh don't look so blue, my deary~."
She spins silk to entangle my soul then bites the end of a strand, her magic venom flows down the strand and coats the heart. Forcibly changing the trait and color.
"...I think purple is a better look on you! Ahuhuhu~."
This feels so wrong.
"Why is everyone messing with my soul today?!"
Her spider underlings draw webbing in strings in horizontal lines. These lines are also infused with the purple magic and attract my soul.
[You're trapped in a strange purple web!]
"Here's the deal, dearie~...A spider will appear to the right between each turn, holding a sign that presents the density and type of attack that will come after your turn. Now while you can't move, your pretty little soul can, and you'll have to move it along or switch between the three strings to avoid attacks. There will only be three strings. No more, no less. How's that for fair~?"
I mull it over.
"...Not bad actually. Who goes first?"
"You. I want to see what you can do."
She's a smart one, I'll give her that. Let's see my options.
"Why so pale? You should be proud~."
"With the amount of blood I've lost today it would make me look like a corpse. But be proud of what?"
"Why...Proud that you're going to make a delicious cake~! Ahuhuhu~!"
Spiders begin crawling across the threads. It's like a weird form of Frogger minus hopping to safety. It's a simple move and I come out of it fine.
"Would it help if I asked nicely? Please let me go?"
"You know...Someone warned us about you...Offered us a LOT of money for your SOUL."
This gets my attention.
"What?"
"Oh yes~. They had such a sweet smile~ and...Ahuhuhu~. It's strange, but I swore I saw them in the shadows...Changing shape...?"
The hell? Wait...She can't mean one of the Followers...Can she? Stop it! Don't think about them! Don't!
"Still trying, huh? Still thing. Don't you know spider silk is five times stronger than steel?"
I can not get a break today.
A spider drops down and holds a sign...It's a picture of two spiders. What?
Double the spiders come on the strings at the same time. It's somehow a new move yet works too similar to the normal attack to be tricky. I dodge it fairly well.
[HP āāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāā 40/40]
[Muffet pours herself a cup of spiders.]
...I didn't need to see that. No one needs to see a large spider drink smaller spiders like they were tea.
"*sip* With the money from you SOUL, the spider clans can finally be reunited~."
I tilt my head.
"What do you mean?"
"You haven't heard? Spiders have been trapped in the RUINS for generations!"
Obvious thing is obvious.
"Can't they, you know, squeeze out through the door?"
"*scoff* Even if they go under the door, Snowdin's fatal cold is impassable alone."
It is pretty cold there. Then they'd have to travel through two zones to get here. Damn, that sucks.
"But with the money from your SOUL, we'll be able to rent them a heated limo~. And with all of the leftovers...? We could have a nice vacation~! Or even build a spider baseball field~!"
What little sympathy I was gaining dies at that.
"Now you're just spending to show off."
"But enough of that...It's time for dinner, isn't it? Ahuhuhu~."
*Growls*
I look around and see nothing. I don't like this.
[STRUGGLE selected.]
[You struggle to escape the web. Nothing happened.]
"Don't struggle too much. You'll make yourself all sweaty. No one wants a sweaty donut."
A spider drops down and holds a sign...It's a picture of a spider and a donut?
The spiders come crawling faster than before even if their numbers aren't as much, then they are followed by random donuts being thrown by the spiders blocking the pathways. This almost had me. Came close, but no cigar.
[HP āāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāā 40/40]
I'm proud of my dodging skills. I've come a long way.
[Muffet tidies up the web around you.]
If you don't like crumbs, don't throw food. It's very simple.
*Growls*
There's that sound again. I really don't like it. Muffet does though.
"You look concerned."
"Are you saying you don't hear the growling?"
She giggles.
"Oh, how rude of me! I almost forgot to introduce you to my pet~."
I'm puzzled. What kind of pet does a spider have?
"Oh, my pet~...Looks like it's time for dessert~."
I can hear rapid heavy skittering. Not good! Not good!
[STRUGGLE selected.]
[You struggle to escape the web. Muffet is so amused by your antics that she gives you a discount!]
"Tell you what...If you survive my pet, I just might consider sparing you."
"R-Really? That might actually be the f...Holy fucking shit!!"
*Roar*
An abomination appears. A hideous cupcake spider thing emerges from the webs.
"What the fuck is that thing?!"
"This is my pet. Have fun, you two~."
A spider drops down and holds a sign...It's a picture of a cupcake. I don't like this at all!
So many spiders speed by in an unchanging pattern of fear and with good reason. The freaky food beast climbs down and begins eating the strings, pulling my soul towards its hungry maw. This causes spiders that were already on their way to fall prey to this creature as I desperately do my best to not get hit or be dragged to what I assume is instant death. But I'm too panicked to be perfect in my dodging.
[HP āāāā 4/40]
Six...I took six hits. I'm gonna die.
[Your soul can't take much more of this.]
No? Really?! Like I couldn't fucking tell!
"You're still alive? Ahuhuhu~...That's impressive~."
She calls her pet to her side.
"Got way too worked up...*gag* I think...*gag* I think I'm gonna puke. *hic*"
"...Please don't. Do you know how hard vomit is to clean out of webbing?"
I take a moment to settle down.
"*sigh* Don't lie...Spiders eat their webbing when it gets messed up."
She cringes.
"Yeah...I don't know everything about spiders. But I do know random gross stuff like that."
I shake off the impending dizziness.
"So...Are you going to spare me?"
She thinks for a moment.
"I will..."
Maybe there is a god?
"For the small fee of 500G~."
Nope. God's dead.
"Are you kidding me?! I'm fucking broke! "
I ain't telling her I have money.
"Then I guess we're going to be spending more quality time together, dearie~ I do hope you're feeling comfortable trapped in that web. Ahuhuhuhu~! Because I don't mind keeping you here for as long as it takes~!"
Damn it. I don't have time for this crap. Wait a second...Time? Heh...This gives me an idea.
"Say, Muffet...Who's watching your bake sale stand while you're here?"
She folds her upper arms.
"A loyal family member. Why do you ask?"
I chuckle softly.
"Oh, no reason. Just checking."
Her eyes cock.
"Checking?"
"Well, we've been here a long time. At least, you have because you got here before me. And we're far from your stand too. It would be a real shame if someone took your 'donations' while this fight was happening."
She sneers.
"Dearie, you're not going to fool me again with that trick. No one would dare steal from me."
I smirk.
"That's the thing...It's not YOU they'd stealing from now is it? It's some other weaker spider."
Her expression gains some worry.
"Even if that spider is loyal, can you honestly say it can defend the money if, let's say, a group stormed the table?"
Concern crosses her face and her pet nudges her as it picks up the vibes.
"Then...Then I'll kill you quickly and return before some fool even tries!"
I shake my head at her.
"Yeah, that would be a thing you could do. But...You can't."
"Wha...What do you mean I can't? You have four HP left! One more hit and your SOUL is mine!"
I put my hands in my pockets and rock on my heels.
"True. So very true. Yet...It's not your turn."
Her eyes widen, finally picking up on my little plan.
"Here's the thing...I've been in enough fights to understand how they work. It all functions on a turn-based system. It's a very fair means of doing combat. No one can attack at random, only when it's their turn. Heh...But the kicker is, and I think you know where I'm going with this...There's no time limit on turns. So if I want to...as long as I don't do anything...my turn will never end. And we'll be stuck here, locked like this...forever!"
Now it's her turn to feel panic.
"You're bluffing."
I grin.
"How much are you willing to bet on that? Because I wager your clan won't take losing all their hard-earned gold due to your negligence very well. They may think a new leader is needed if that happens."
I yawn and stretch to get cozy, showing I'm more than willing to stay put. She twitches with nervousness.
"So tell us, Muffet...What's it gonna be?"
Based on my understanding of Muffet, she's a greedy, stingy, intimidating, malicious, and somehow hypocritical monster, although having a courteous and sweet way of speaking. She won't stay. The odds don't favor her.
Her pet looks at her, the spiders turn to her, the pressure is almost visible as it smothers her. She balls her six fists and stomps her foot in a fit.
"Fine! I'll SPARE you!"
"For free?"
She grinds her teeth.
"Yes, for free! Just quit stalling and confirm it!"
[Muffet is sparing you and refuses your money.]
I can be super evil when I have the chance.
[MERCY selected.]
[SPARE selected.]
[YOU WON!]
[You earned 0 XP and 0 gold.]
The webbing around my soul dissolves. As does the stuff around my feet. My soul turns a dull orange and returns to my body.
"There, you're free. Now get lost!"
"I'm glad we could have such a fun time together, dear."
She snarls and hops onto her pet.
"Next time, you won't get away so easily."
"And maybe next time you'll be paying me for my amazing entertainment skills."
I think channeled Mettaton for a moment. She bites back some harsh unladylike remarks and rides off. I look at the spiders that block my way out.
"Move...please."
They're hesitant but do so.
"Thank you."
I take a few steps but stop near them, pulling out a small handful of gold.
"I don't know if what she said was true, but...here."
I put the gold on the ground and take my leave, pulling a bottle of cider from my inventory to heal.
"Consider it an addition to the amount I've already paid in the Ruins."
The spiders are confused but I hear them take the gold. I can be evil, yes. But it's not true to my nature. I drink the whole bottle as I enter a new, hopefully lacking in spiders, area.
[HP āāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāā 28/40]
Not bad. I'll fully heal up soon. This new area appears to have the same material as the Ruins. I'm getting homesick. I miss Toriel. I miss Flowey. I miss my bed. I want to go home.
My melancholy blinds me to my current surroundings. I only come out of it once a spotlight hits me.
"The hell...?"
Things look funny. No doubt it's a setup by Mettaton. But I'm unsure what this act is. I mean, it looks like a receptionist's waiting room. A desk and some random chairs.
"GOOD EVENING, LADIES AND GENTS...!"
Mettaton zips in wearing a red suit and shoves me in a chair as he takes center stage.
"FIRST AND FOREMOST, WE HERE AT MTTTV WOULD LIKE TO APOLOGIZE FOR THE LACK OF ME OVER THE COURSE OF THE PROGRAM. DUE TO THE LACK PREP WORK WITH MY COSTAR HERE, WE SADLY HAD TO FORGO A THRILLING ACT BACK IN LEVEL TWO INVOLVING HUNDREDS OF EXPLOSIVES!!"
I so freaking called it. I should let him have his moment...Nah!
"I thought you said that act was shit anyway?"
He extends an arm to cover my mouth.
"FORGIVE HER. SHE'S LOST A LOT OF BLOOD AND NOT ALL THERE MENTALLY."
I leer at him flatly.
"BUT...DARLING HERE IS GOING TO MAKE AMENDS WITH US ALL RIGHT NOW. IT'S TIME TO ANSWER SOME BURNING QUESTIONS."
I'm so confused as he lets go and leaps onto the desk, posing dramatically.
"IT'S TIME FOR..."
A large neon sign shaped like him drops from the ceiling.
"BURNING THE MIDNIGHT OIL WITH A KILLER ROBOT! THE LATE NIGHT TALK SHOW HOSTED BY YOURS TRULY."
Huh. Not a bad title.
"I thought you were working on a courtroom trial program?"
He scoots to now sit behind the desk.
"UNFORTUNATELY, WHILE I DO HAVE THE FUNDS, I DON'T HAVE AVAILABLE WORKERS TO MAKE SUCH A SET. SO...WE'RE DOING THIS INSTEAD."
"Heh...Must be hard to meet your expectations."
"DARLING, YOU HAVE NO IDEA."
A tense dramatic score plays.
"SO, DARLING...ARE YOU READY TO TELL ME EVERYTHING?"
Ah. I see now. Fine, Metta, have it your way. Just be careful what you wish for. You may not like it. Now don't get me wrong. I know my limits. I'm not about to tell him EVERYTHING. I'm not that stupid. But if he wants truth, he's going to get a version that's missing some characters and other junk.
"As you wish. You wanna know the truth? You want to scar the entire Underground? Sure. Why not. What else do I have to lose at this point since you exposed me? So congratulations! I hope you like the prize you've been longing to get. Because I sure as hell don't."
Let the show commence.
BAH!
Working in a visual medium is such a headache. Let me tell you about it! Iām stuck on a problem I need to solve, so taking a moment to put my thoughts down will help.
You think comedy is the easy way out? WRONG! Itās hard, bitterly so! Easier to do dark, meandering meditations on mortality, you never have to have any answers then. Comedy is hard- every page has to do the heavy lifting of propelling something forward, and also crack a joke.
Then you add in the difficulty of working visually. Take page five of this current arc- need to move the action back to the unicorns, normally Iād start with a dramatic image of their fortress with lightning, always got to have lightning. Plus, rain is piss easy and looks good. But thereās no space for that, this page has a lot to do. How do we move back to them? Easy- Smetterling arrives with sandwiches, thus demonstrating that they are in the middle of something, and weāre back in the castle.
The unicorns are watching whatās going on- thatās good, makes them part of events. But how? Ah yes, awesome bubbly cauldron viewer, classic, Time Bandits, canāt go wrong. That means we have to actually look into the thing to demonstrate what is happening- tricky, more page real-estate being taken up, but itās worth it because it links them to the real action going on, plus a little exposition from Pixiepouf and we now know that thereās a fortress atop the volcano. Perfect.
We have a view from a distance, but need to establish that thereās a big huge door in the way of our heroes. Thereās no room to draw in a distance shot though, how to do it? Aha- hand knocks on door, spikes on door visible next to hand, next shot shows the door with multiple spikes in perspective. Now the viewer has an idea of the scale involved, and it didnāt take much room.
Thatās just about left enough room for the joke- I love Hercules, any time that damn cat can turn up and do something riotous is gold. So heās going to knock that door down, but any explosion needs three parts- before, the big bang, and the aftermath. Okay, I have enough room for that. Trouble is, it means that there must be two shots in the same spot, one showing the interior, one showing the explosion.
Two shots like that are a killer, itās a nightmare getting it right, but they make for excellent comedy timing. So, how to reduce the work load? Simple, shot one has lots of vertical and horizontal lines, simple and easy to reproduce. The actual monsters only need to appear once, so I can afford to take some time on them. A lot of detail there will hide the limited background detail showing. Besides, the second shot is mostly smoke and smoke is our friend- itās easy to draw and covers a lot of messy detail.
Then a punchline-Ā āthe cat wants letting in,ā love it. Cats always want to either enter or exit a location, oh Hercules you scamp, got to put that in there. But need to give Denise a line too, sheās a very taciturn character so itās important to give her something to do or sheāll just want to stand there glaring. Give her a line too. More smoke, easy shot.
Finally we need to see Hercules atop his howitzer. Howitzer is a naturally funny word, always add a howitzer. Should the unicorns say something likeĀ ātheyād need a howitzer to bring that down!!ā to set it up? No, too on-the-nose. Besides I spent a good bloody while on that cauldron viewer, donāt want to cover it up.
Finally give the narrator a punchline- love that narrator, what a strong and sterling presence, oh how the narrator is beloved. Canāt getĀ ākitty kitty bang bangā out of my head. Will the Kids Nowadays even get the reference to a sixties musical? Donāt overthink it, Dick Van Dyke is a treasure and thereās no denying it.
All that just to get across the idea that 1) thereās a fortress now 2) the heroes are assaulting it and 3) the unicorns are involved. Took three evenings to iron all that out! Need to cut down on the whiskey and Fernet-Branca cocktails. No, too delicious, need the go-go juice.
Now I just need to solve my next problem- whatās the funniest over-the-top thing Denise could do with her magic- need to give her a Moment, can feel some comedy in it. Maybe something with snakes?Ā
SPN Season 15 Spoiler Sheet, update 10/3
Lots and lots of updates abound. I took out some old general stuff because this monster is huge (but it will only get shorter, sniff sniff) Spoilery goodness under the cut.Ā
DISCLAIMER: This is gathered info from various sources. This is not confirmed information. Stuff in this WILL be wrong. Donāt take this too seriously. This is for fun. Also, if you use this info for another publication, please let me know as a courtesy. Donāt be a dick. It's all out there, but it hurts to see my same phrasing on other publications after all the work Iāve done to consolidate itā¦Ā Ā
General Info (oldest to newest). This is a blend of pre-COVID and post COVID, so some might change.Ā
In an interview, Kripe indicated that the series ending would have āpeaceā for Sam and Dean
Misha will be in 15 out of 20 episodes this season (heās missed 3 so far and I suspect will miss 14. Unclear about 16, 19, and 20).Ā
Dean and Amaraās connection will be explored
JaxCon/Vegas Con spoilers:Ā
Misha said the ending was āhappier than he expectedā but also had some sadness. He later used āsad and redemptiveā
Misha mentioned that Claire will be mentioned on the show, but as of yet not appear.Ā
Dean says the line āstop killing my peopleā (to god?)
Jensen said he doesnāt see how the story could continue past this season, but Jared said its more of āa see you laterā
Al Cal posted a pic of a āthrown awayā call sheet that seem to indicate Micheal, Lucifer, and a character named āBettyā interacting in the bunker. Unclear as to the validity, could be from 19 based on castingĀ
Charlie (original flavor) will return
Filming resumed on Aug 18th. Per Canadian policy, they must quarantine for two weeks. Those quarantining seemed to include:
Fairly Clear: Jared, Jensen, Jake Abel (Micheal), Rob Benedict (Chuck/God) Mark Pelligrino (Lucifer), Al Cal (didn't need to quarantine, but he is definitely on set), Jim Beaver (Bobby)
Unclear/Rumored: Misha (he is being deliberately cagey), Osric Chau (Kevin- but likely for another project, he was a week ahead of everyone else)
Reasons Unlikely: Sam Smith (chemo treatment), Kim Rhodes (working at a camp during quarantine), Ruth Connell (posted from Malibu the entire time)
No idea: Shoshannah SternĀ
Jensen said sp 19 is more of a season finale, while 20 is a series finale. Repeated in interviews/livestreams.Ā
Megan Fitz. complimented both Dabbās and Glynnās writing on twitter. Not sure if it is in reference to rewrites or the special retrospective that is planned.Ā
Jensen indicated that the ending did change per COVID protocols. Later interviews (Variety) confirmed this, but it seemed to indicate the changes were in regards to how many people filmed at once (crowd scenes, recurring characters returning)
Misha is being very, very cagey about where he was. Some live streams seem to indicate he is not at home, but he has yet to confirm- his presence in 19/20 is hard to track. In an interview with Metaverse, he was in bed in a hotel looking space and you could see mountains in the background. He was not on set for the first week of filming, so he could be a week behind.Ā
Misha has thrown around the words āfinalāĀ and āwhat he <Misha> would have wantedā per Casā ending. āSad/Proudā and āpoignantā were also used. His latest line is āsad but satisfyingā
The final episodes will premier October 8th. The finale will air Nov 19th in conjunction with an hour long special.Ā
Dabb confirmed to TV line the episode 19/20 explanation Jensenās mentioned- For the most part, we wrap up a big chunk of our mythology in Episode 19,Episode 20 is more character-based and is more concerned with Sam, Dean and this family theyāve built around them than it is with figuring out the Case of the Week.
When talking about the lightheartedness of returning on ep 14, Dabb said deeply depressing and upsetting episodes are coming (USAToday). He also said we would see ānew sidesā of Jack, Cas, and Billie. A revisit of Chuck and Amaraās āsibling issuesā as well is on tap. Jared said sacrifices are coming.Ā
From TV Line-Ā re the battle with Chuck. Allies will return, buit was repeated several times in the article that is comes down to Sam and Dean. Jack will struggle with getting his soul back but will be helped by Cas.
It was confirmed there will be no appearances by mamma and papa Winchester, possible due to COVID. (TVLine)
From TVLine- āIt worked not only as a case right now, but also as something that informed the journey Sam and Dean have taken, where they started as kids, how they kind of came together and then how that has [led up] to the point that they are, emotionally, when the episode airs. So it ended up being a really good reflection of our guys now, telling a story about our guys then, which, to me, are always the best versions of those types of flashback stories.ā
Episode 15x17
Jake Abel is definitely on set, and he posted an instagram story with his trailer and Luciferās (Mark Pelligrino)
Some filming was done at a gas station called Showalterās (name of the director) with Jared, Jensen, and Alex
Scene ā28ā took several days and seemed to go across both 19 and 20? So they might have done some combo filming?
Filming locations seemed to include a barn (pic with a stunt guy showed wooden walls and straw) and a lake (not the mountain lake from 19), and a forest. Filming signs spotted at Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve.Ā
Jim Beaver confirmed his appearance on Twitter
There was a pic of J2 with baby on a bridge. Baby had her original plates. They seem to be wearing the same clothes they were in the pilot. There may be grey (??) In their hair, but that could be lighting
Misha posted some creation videos, saying he had been on an impromptu camping trip. He was back in his house. They were posted on the last day of filming and he had pretty decent scruff. He also mentioned that it was the last day of filming and he wasn't up there.Ā
The show officially wrapped at 6:25 on 9/10
Jared said āthe last time Sam and Dean see each other is the last time Jared and Jensen film togetherā but seem to imply that was not the final scene? It was a confusing answer to a question about filming the final scene.
The second interview in the Final Fantasy Portal Siteās three-volume series of Final Fantasy IX interviews in celebration of the gameās 20th anniversary features character designer and game artist Toshiyuki Itahana.
The first interview featured event design and scenario writer Kazuhiko Aoki. The third interview will feature director Hiroyuki Ito.
Get the full interview with Itahana below.
āFinal Fantasy IX is often known as a title thatās about āreturning to rootsā of Final Fantasy series games. Are there any scenes from the game that ring true to that theme in your mind?
Itahana: āThe parts of Final Fantasy IX that feel like a return to the roots of Final Fantasyā¦ I think the scene when the airship docks into the castle backed by the evening sky of the opening scene might be a quintessential portrait of Final Fantasy.ā
āEach main character of Final Fantasy IX carries their own background story into the battles they face. Do you have a favorite? Please tell us why as well.
Itahana: āIām quite fond of Vivi, but I have to say that Zidane might be my favorite. Strong yet with a kind compassion for othersāheās a true hero in my mind. The fact that heās a joker who doesnāt conduct himself like such a hero makes him all that much more wonderful of a character.ā
āOf course the main characters are well-established, but there are some truly unforgettable NPCs filling out Final Fantasy IXās world as well.
Itahana: āThereās lots of characters in Final Fantasy IX whose backgrounds Iām curious about. Like, how Baku managed to bring the Tantalus theater troupe together from such a diverse group of characters, or why Cid was so trusted by everyone. And Vivi, for exampleāhow did he get the play ticket and make his way to Alexandria? Thatās just one of the things Iād still like to know. As for NPCs, I really like Marcus from Tantalus. Heās the type of guy who works behind the scenes supporting his comrades, but isnāt afraid to take action when the situation calls for it. Iād love to know how he came to join Tantalus.ā
āOn top of Baku and Marcus, Tantalus had a lot of unusual members such as Zenero and his siblings too.
Itahana: āThe Tantalus theater troupe was primarily designed by the art director, Mr. Minaba. At first, during development there was talk of Ruby being an oyama [traditional Japanese Kabuki theater term, referring to a male actor who plays female roles], although Iām not sure how the official lore on that ended up. The other Tantalus membersā backgrounds were always a mystery, even during the character planning stages. Someday Iād like to hear about their origins in depth.ā
āThe characters in Final Fantasy IX were a little shorter in stature than those in FF titles released shortly before Final Fantasy IX. Was there a reason for that?
Itahana: āI wasnāt part of the development team when it was decided that Final Fantasy IXās characters would be shorter than before, so I donāt know the reason. However, I think the way the characters are almost overly expressive with big exaggerated body language looks great because of their shorter statures, and I feel that matches very well with the motifs of ātheaterā and āstageā that permeate Final Fantasy IX.ā
āThe CG screenshots overlaid with character lines that play when the game loads are another memorable way that Final Fantasy IX showed its characters.
Itahana: āThe character poses in that art ended up primarily used for promotional and UI purposes. Art director Mr. Minaba and I made the art by giving the CG team pose ideas and then painting over the CG they got back to us.ā
āWe think that Mr. Uematsuās music played a large part in expressing Final Fantasy IXās unique characters and world. Are there any songs from the soundtrack that are particularly memorable to you?
Itahana: āThere are a lot of well-known songs from Final Fantasy IX so Iād like to talk about one that doesnāt get much attention. I love āQuinaās Theme.ā The banging rhythm of the drums when the song startsāthat strong, steady sound gives me a lot of courage. When Iām super overloaded or really feeling the pressure of an approaching deadline, in the middle of the night Iāll often listen to āQuinaās Themeā while working.ā
āWe heard that you did some Final Fantasy IX illustration commissions for Coca-Cola [commercial and figures exclusive to Japan]. Is there anything you were especially careful about because it was a collaboration?
Itahana: āThe request for the Coca-Cola collaboration characters came when the design work for Final Fantasy IXās development was almost finished, so I had very little trouble designing them. If Tantalus were the official royal family band, I imagined that they would be a wandering troupe that comes to Alexandria once a year ā thatās the image I used when designing for the collaboration.ā
āFinal Fantasy IX has a lot of mini games, many of which are quite difficult. Are there any that you remember in particular?
Itahana: āThe one I played the most was Tetra Master, which I took part in the design of. But the mini game that stands out most in my mind is probably Ragtime Mouseās quiz. He asked a lot of tough questions! My favorite mini game music is from the sword fight mini gameāāVamoāAlla Flamencoā!ā
āSpeaking of the quiz mini game, Final Fantasy IX has a lot of monsters with unusual gimmicks. Do you have a favorite monster?
Itahana: āIāve already mentioned Ragtime Mouse, so aside from thatā¦ I suppose Armstrong. You can see the little legs sticking out the bottom and itās always wobbling back and forth. Itās just too cute.ā
āWere there any other interesting happenings or things you struggled with that you particularly remember from development?
Itahana: āIn the credits Iām categorized as a character designer, but during the later stages of development I did overpainting of large prerendered background images. That included adjusting colors in areas of the background that we wanted users to look at to stand out more, or lowering the color saturation in areas that didnāt need to be looked at so much. Youāll notice if you check the map of Alexandriaās pub, but the color saturation is adjusted in such a way that places where the player can move or where characters will be placed are well lit, and places other than that have their color saturation adjusted so dark that theyāre almost gray. The stairs are also broken so as to keep the player from trying to go upstairs ā thatās hand-drawn as well. It was tedious work that took a lot of patience, but I learned a lot about drawing from it.ā
āFor our last question, weād love for you to share some of your feelings about working on Final Fantasy IX, and a message for the many fans who still love it.
Itahana: āNow that its 20th anniversary is here, Iāve been hearing a lot about how Final Fantasy IX is always highly praised in polls about FF games both in Japan and the west. I feel that it is a game with a timeless story, a strongly established theme and lovable, truly unique characters. On the 20th anniversary of Final Fantasy IX it would make me very happy if people who have yet to experience this game gave it a shot, or those who played it 20 years ago tried it again. I hope each player finds a character that resonates with them.ā
āThank you for your time today!
Helluva Boss Pilot: Gender Reverse
Ā Not too far away from Pentagram City lay a shady place in the bowels of Hell. āWelcome to Imp City: est. 1981ā was posted on a worn wooden sign with a white painted eye toward the top. Under a crimson sky, a wide array of buildings made up the city, some with spikes on the roofs. Downtrodden imps of various colors and sizes mulled around the streets and ghettos. Mugging, sex, drugs, poverty, and murder were common aspects of their everyday afterlives. Indeed, being considered ālesser demonsā and the ālowest of the low,ā not very many had opportunities granted to them.
Ā Well, save for a unique family of imps, trying to get their business running.
Ā Just who were these imps?
Ā Ā A nearby screen showed old fashioned numbers ticking down, 3, 2, and 1 against red.
Ā Elektriza, a red and white faced imp appeared on stage in front of purple curtains. Elektriza smiled in front of the camera with a row of sharp yellow teeth, her eyes yellow with orange irises and black pupils. The left side of her face was red and the right side was white. A prominent black mark was visible on her forehead, looking like an upside down lotus. Her long curved horns were black and white, the horns curving inward toward her face like a ramās. A dark navy blue business dress graced her form, orange-pink buttons going down the center of it. The collar of her dress was white and her red undershirt had a round pink pin with a stitched up face on it. Her dress had several tatters in it. Navy blue gloves covered her hands and wrists, with a yellow eye decoration on each one. She also wore matching cowgirl boots, the tips of them the same pinkish color as her pin. A red pointed tail with a few white spots on it excitedly swished back and forth behind her.
Ā āHi there, Iām Elektriz, the āaā is silent, and Iām the founder of I.M.P.!ā
Ā The logo appeared in red sparkles over her outstretched left hand. āI.M.P.ā was shown in bold black letters, the āMā shaped like black and white imp horns. Down below were words in red: āImmediate Murder Professionals.ā
Ā āAre you a piece of shit who got yourself sent to Hell?ā
Ā A small screen in the right hand corner showed Elektriza wearing a black cape and two black pointed hats on her horns. A monocle rested near her left eye. She was grinning in front of a burning house. The sign beside her read āorphanage for disabled neglected children.ā
Ā āOr are you an innocent soul who just happened to be fucked over by someone else?ā
Ā The next slide showed Elektriza in a white angel costume throwing a styrofoam cup into a waste bin next to a recycle bin. An old clerk with large glasses was working behind a desk in the background. Red pentagrams decorated the walls.
Ā The next clip showed a video of a tall muscular red demon talking in front of a camera. She was wearing a white shirt that read āOhioā on it in red. A 666 News billboard was in the background along with a āHellaā sign and a beer poster. An imp held a wooden sign that read āSome person who hired us!ā
Ā The red demon spoke, āAfter lovingly killing my husband for fucking a delivery lady, you can imagine my surprise when I wound up here, after the state of Ohio killed me.ā She punched one of her hands with her meaty fist. āI really wish I could just stick it to that yapping charter who saw me hiding the body!ā
The scene cut back to Elektriza who was shown holding an ornate Satanic ritual book. She was in a room full of white candles and skulls scattered on the floor and a white clothed altar with a round mirror on it.
Ā Behind her were her two employee imps, Moxxia and Millard. Moxxia had white messy hair and black and white stripped horns curving back in a zig zag look. Several white tuffs of hair rested beside her cheeks on either side. She wore a similar dark navy blue business dress like her boss, with the pink buttons in the center and the cuffs of the sleeves white. Moxxiaās face was red, and her eyes were big and yellow. White freckles dotted near her eyes and an orange-pink bow rested on top of her head between her horns. Her red and blue curved hooves were visible, as was her red pointed tail with a couple of black stripes on it.
Ā Finally, there was the other imp, Millard. Millard had a red face like his wife Moxxia, and also had big yellow eyes. His hair was short, black, and wild on top of his head. A white spot in his hair took the shape of a skull. His tall long horns were black with faint white stripes on them. The horns curved slightly past the back of his head. Unlike the other two, he wore torn black jeans and a black crop top shirt that exposed his red shoulders. His clawed feet and red tail were visible as well.
Ā āWell luckily for you,ā Elektriza mentioned, referring back to the red demon desperate for revenge, āThanks to our companyās special access to the living worldā¦ā
Ā She grinned and wiggled her fingers.
Ā Fwoosh!
Ā A fast explosive sound was heard and a flaming portal appeared inside the candle circle. The impact sent the other two imps scurrying away. She walked over to the portal.
Ā āWe can help you take care of your unfinished business by taking out anyone who screwed you over when you were alive!ā
Ā She smiled and fell backwards into the portal.
Ā The next image showed a white figure with an angry expression, arms crossed. A thought bubble was above the head with a red x over another figure. A red monster fell next to the startled figure. The camera panned up and showed the three imps arriving in a red circle. Millard stood with a spear in his hands, Moxxia held a gun and Elektriza stood with both her arms out. Elektrizaās arms made the āMā in the I.M.P. logo.
Ā The commercial jingle began:
Ā āWho you want somebody gone
And you donāt wanna wait too long
Call the Immediate Murder Professionalsā
Ā Ā Moxxia threw a grenade out the window, Elektriza and Millard covering their ears and smiling as it exploded. A picture of a growling Moxxia hung on the wall.
Ā In an office room, Elektriza grinned manically as she hung a struggling human from the ceiling. Millard held a piece of paper and showed it to Moxxia, who was sitting on a chair. On the wall was a flat screen TV, a rocker poster, and a drawing of Madam Zmeya, the snake inventor.
Ā Elektriza shocked a bond and gagged victim, Millard used a mace on another victim, while a scowling Moxxia choked a third.
Ā āWhether grenade or cyanide
Weāll make it look like suicide
The Immediate Murder Professionalsā
Ā āWe do our job so well
Because we come straight up from Hellā
Ā The next clip showed Elektriza mentioning for her partners in crime to follow her through a flaming portal in the wall. Millard happily followed, along with Moxxia, who tripped on a book as she ran through. The three imps appeared through the floor and did poses after Moxxia quickly stood back up. They fell silent as humans in a church service stared at them in shock.
Ā āWeāll kill your husband our your wife
Weāll even let you keep the knife
The Immediate Murder Professionals
Ā Kids die for free!ā
Ā Ā Millard was shown greedily eying a pink pair of ladies underwear while stabbing a naked couple having sex in bed. Moxxia groaned and looked away. Elektriza found a pair of boxers and help them up for a closer look.
Ā Elektriza repeatedly stabbed another victimās head in a chair at a circus in Hell. āThe Elektriza Extravaganzaā was shown in bold black letters on a sign.
Ā The imps killed more people, torturing people with Medieval stretching, chasing victims with a shark, roasting them with gasoline and fire, smothering them with pillows, dropping a piano on them, and electrocuting them.
Ā A little kid with white skin, brown curly hair, black pants and an orange shirt with a ringed planet on it was strolling along licking a pink ice cream cone.
Ā Bang!
Ā The kid fell to the ground after Moxxia shot her in the back. The imps looked at each other in shock, believing they had killed the wrong target. The kid was rushed to the worst hospital in the city, one where the doctors carelessly treated the kid and only cared about insurance money. The girl was rushed into the emergency room.
Ā āDoctor, sheās not responding,ā said a pink haired male, rapidly shaking the girlās still form.
Ā āWho ordered a stat?ā asked a female with glasses. She gave the kid hard chest compressions. āIt didnāt do anything!ā
Ā The doctor came in. āDamn it! Weāre not losing another one! Clear!ā
Ā The kid received a shock to the heart and she gasped for air.
Ā āHoly shit that actually worked,ā the blonde spectacled doctor muttered.
Ā The imps sat in the waiting room, just outside door 66. The doctor came out to see them.
Ā āSheās in stable condition, but sheāll need surgery. Now what kind of insurance do you freaks have?ā
Ā āThe fuck is insurance?!ā asked Elektriza.
Ā The imps, kid and bed were promptly sent crashing through a window, glass flying everywhere. Everyone screamed as they fell. Thankfully, a flaming portal was underneath them, sending the group back into Hell.
Ā Ā Moxxia and Millard later sang a murder love song in their living room before the meeting. Moxxia played on her purple guitar as Millard watched her with love in his eyes. It reminded them of the good times when they would shoot at demons together in the streets, when they dragged a bloody sack behind them and when Millard got a grenade as a present and used it to blow up a building.
Ā Moxxia began:
Ā Ā āOh what a thrill when the crimson starts to spill
And my Millard goes in for the kill
He takes away my breath
Heās the angel of death, Millard
Oh Millardā
Ā āEverything is like a dream
When I hear his victims start to scream
When I go for the attack
Heās always got my back, on guard
Oh Millardā
Ā āWhen the blood starts dripping down the sides
And the bodies start to fall from the skies
My heart skips a beat
When my Millardās guns a blazing in the night
He makes me feel alive in every fight
Through blood and tears, weāll never be apart
He makes the murdering fun from the startā
Ā Ā Both of them hummed before Moxxia finished,
Ā āOf all the imps in Hellā¦itās for him that I fellā¦ā
Ā Millard joined in at the same moment, āItās for her that I fellā¦ā
Ā āOh Millard.ā
Ā They leaned in for a kiss.
Ā Ā They paused. Moxxia yelled, while looking out the window. Elektriza was pressed against the window with a video camera.
Ā āAre you fucking filming us right now?!ā she yelled.
Ā Millard glanced over and sighed, as a smiling Elektriza held up a sign which read āMeeting in 2 hours: nice job banging yoā wife!ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Just before the meeting, Elektriza walked into the receptionist room.
Ā A white and grey male Hellhound was already there, Chandra the grumpy receptionist. He wore a grey-blue shirt with black strings making a downward Pentagram design at the top. His jeans were torn and black, his paws visible. He wore a spiked collar around his neck and rings on his pointed ears. His eyes were red with white irises and black pupils, eyes that seemed perpetually angry or bored.
Ā The rotary bone-shaped phone made barking sounds as it rang. The hound picked it up.
Ā āHello, I.M.P.ā he said in a gruff monotone.
Ā āMe and my wife got stabbed! Somebody helpā¦ā
Ā Chandra abruptly hung up and continued reading a Hellhound Monthly magazine in front of him. His breath smelled like meth and cigarette smoke. A hidden āto doā list in front of him read: āterrorize the werecats,ā āgo get a drink,ā āhang out with cute Sobtiny at the hound rock concert.ā He already imagined himself back in the comfort of his home, punching a punching bag with Moxxiaās face on it.
Ā Moxxia stomped over to the Hellhoundās desk, holding a āchub be goneā paper in her hand. āDid you just send me an ad for weight loss?ā
Ā āNo,ā he replied.
Ā āWhy would anyone send me this?ā
Ā Chandra let out a small smile. āCome on. You know why.ā
Ā Moxxia sighed, āYouāre just awful!ā before she wondered over to get water.
Ā āHello Chandy!ā Elektriza beamed at her adoptive son as she came over. āDid you enjoy my adoption anniversary present?ā
Ā āI already fucking told you,ā Chandra growled. āIt was a bunch of spiders and not a cure for syphilis. So no.ā
Ā āAw donāt be such a liar,ā Elektriza remarked in a playful tone. āAlthough Iām sorry that it happened, regardless.ā Chandra growled out loud, clenching his claws.
Ā The phone rang again and Chandra answered it.
Ā āElektriz!ā he called. āThat clingy rich assholeās on the phone! Says itās urgent and wants to talk to you!ā Then he muttered, āSounds a little D T F y.ā (Down to fuck).
Ā Moxxia walked back in, standing by Elektriza next to the water cooler.
Ā āOh god that was one time!ā Elektriza called, spilling water everywhere. āWe wouldnāt be able to have access to the living world, if I didnāt sleep with that privileged asshole!ā
Ā Moxxia paused, confused. āYou what?ā
Ā āAndā¦I may have stolen her book after we fucked. Man it was heavy. Yeah, I then fell off a balcony and landed in the king owlās cake. Then I was like, āSorry I fucked your wife!āā
Ā āElektriz!ā Chandra bellowed.
Ā āI heard you already!ā Elektriza shouted back.
Ā The head imp walked over to another desk and gulped down a cup of iced coffee. She took a breath and sighed in satisfaction. āAh, this stuff never gets old! My horse Thumbtack agrees with me.ā
Ā āYour horse doesnāt exist,ā Moxxia remarked.
Ā āDonāt you be mean to our boss like that,ā Millard piped up as he walked over to Moxxia.
Ā āDonāt tell me that you believe her?ā
Ā āI just find it amusing that she changes her horseās name every day!ā
Ā āThatās more like it,ā Elektriza responded. āYou see, we need more of Millardās good spirits in all of us. Now if youāll excuse me, I have a certain someone to talk to before the meeting.ā
Ā Elektriza left and opened the door to her office, the one where āElektrizaā was written with the āaā crossed out.
Ā Moxxia huffed. āGreat, now I donāt have my avocado salad for lunch because someone decided to eat it.ā
Ā She glared at Chandra who flipped her the bird. āI was hungover and hungry, alright?ā
Ā āWhy would you get drunk on a workday anyway?ā asked Millard to Chandra.
Ā āDumbass! I was hung over from this morning!ā he replied.
Ā āAt least I donāt go around kicking babies in strollers,ā Moxxia scoffed.
Ā āJust admit it, everyone knows youāre a white-haired loser, Moxxia.ā
Ā āSoā¦ā drawled Elektriza as she played with bobbleheads of Moxxia and Millard on her desk in her office. A circus poster hanging on the wall reminded Elektriza of the times when she performed with her two brothers, Tillo and Barb Wire. She was sitting in her chair holding her cell phone. āWhat can I do you for, Stola?ā
Ā An owl princess lounged on a couch in her palace, holding an old rotary phone with wings on it. Her eyes were large and red, her round black hat had a gold crown on it. The hat also had red markings similar to her eyes. Long silky black hair fell past her shoulders, brushing her grey feathery wings. Her chest was fluffy and a silvery grey. A portrait shown a picture of the royal family: Stola, her husband and their son, Prince Octavius. A red robe with a fur collar was draped over her.
Ā The princess spoke in a British accent. āThereās a doctor thatās causing trouble up on Earth for a few of my associates. Heās trying to convince people that the Covid 19 Pandemic exists and to take extra precautions.ā
Ā āDoesnāt it?ā
Ā āWell, yes, but more people die when theyāre being careless and nothingās done about it. And though I hate being lonelyā¦itās getting overcrowded here. Frankly, the global warming issue seems easier to deal with.ā
Ā āOkay well now that makes sense,ā said Elektriza. A mug with ā#1 bossā was on the desk.
Ā āYou know what happens when Iām lonely or stressed, Trizzy?ā
Ā āGod fuckin damn it,ā she muttered.
Ā The owl grinned, her eyes glowing red, she spoke a lot of curse words and terrible things. āWhen Iām lonely, I become hungry. And when Iām hungry, I want to choke on that big redā¦of yoursā¦lick yourā¦bite with more teethā¦until youāre screamingā¦like a fucking baby!ā
Ā A stunned Elektriza hung up from the āone night stand bird dick,ā broke her phone in half, banged another phone on top of it, then mixed the pieces into a blender.
Ā āHere, eat this,ā Elektriza said to Chandra who came in. The Hellhound guzzled it down.
Ā āAnd you know that bridge over the freeway?ā
Ā āYeah?ā asked the hound.
Ā āShit off it.ā
Ā The imps currently resided in a tall office building that seemed to stand out among the other structures. Along with spikes jutting from the roof and sides, there were a pair of giant black and white imp horns attached to the sides of the building for decoration. The lights inside near the top floor were on.
Ā Posted on a door were the words āI.M.P. Headquartersā with āIMP Meeting in Progressā written on a piece of paper taped to the door, a smiley face off to the side.
Ā On a white board was a bar graph and a line graph, the line graph pointing lower at a drawing of a raging horned demon. āFix this shit!ā was written in big bold letters that took up much of the board. āElektriza is the best, by Elektrizaā was scribbled off to the side. Several tall chairs with spikes jutting from the top boarders were set near a brown table in the center of the room. A white pentagram was drawn in the center of the table.
Ā Elektriza began to speak, pacing back and forth. She looked toward her audience of two imps and a hellhound sitting on chairs around a table.
Ā āAll right, now I know business has beenā¦a bit slow, lately.ā
Ā She mentioned to the board at the downward sloping line. āIn fact, there seems to be less people seeking out our services; 1,056 in comparison to the 1,066 from last month. Weāve basically spiraled from the True Blue Market to that of the Raging Bull.ā She pointed at the roaring demon head drawing on the board.
Ā āShouldnāt it be the Bull Market is good and the Bear Market is bad?ā said a voice.
Ā āMoxxia, nobody cares what you think,ā Elektriza said, before continuing.
Ā āAny decrease could spell disaster for us, not to mention how lots of people use our services and yet look down on us.ā Elektriza cleared her throat and spread out her hands. āNow, Iām not saying itās, *cough* Moxxiaās or anyoneās faultā¦ā
Ā Moxxia raised her eyebrows.
Ā Elektriza continued, āā¦but letās discuss how we can improve. Now does anyone have any ideas on how to get business drumming up again?ā
Ā Millard, raised his hand with a grin and shining eyes.
Ā āWhatā¦aboutā¦a car wash?!ā
Ā āThis is Hell, Milliard, no one cares about cars being clean here, okay?!ā
Ā Just then, there came a coughing from the other room. A small cyclops demon with hot pink hair with a patch of yellow opened the door and walked in. He brushed off soot from his white shirt and waved at the group, who stared in surprise.
Ā āHi, Iām Preppy! Itās nice to meet you all.ā
Ā He darted around the room and began removing cobwebs from the windows. āIt looks like there are two women, a man and a dog here, a nice balance.ā
Ā Chandra, the grey hellhound glared at Preppy, narrowing his red eyes. āWhat was that, you little shit?ā
Ā Preppy stopped in his tracks. āNow, did you guys need any cars to be washed?ā
Ā Elektriza shook her head. āWe donāt have any cars here, weāre broke as fuck.ā
Ā Millard stared at Preppy and cupped his own cheeks with his hands. āOh my Satan! Heās so adorable! Can we keep him?!ā
Ā āNo!ā Moxxia and Chandra shouted at the same time. The two workers then glared at each other.
Ā Moxxia crossed her arms. āWeāre in the middle of a meeting right now. Do you mind?!ā She pointed to the door.
Ā Preppy laughed nervously, āOh okay, sorry about that, hehhehheh. Iāll be outside if you need me!ā
Ā He scurried out of the room.
Ā Elektriza paused for a moment, then said, āOh right! Ideas for our company!ā She waved her hands, eyes shining. āHow about a billboard?!ā
Ā Moxxia crossed her arms. āWe canāt afford a billboard, mamā.ā
Ā Elektriza rushed over and held Moxxia in a headlock. Her voice was rushed and sarcastic, āSo helpful, Moxxia, Iām really glad youāre in the room right now.ā She shoved Moxxia away.
Ā Elektriza stared in frustration. āHave you guys forgotten what service we provide?!ā
Ā She picked up a remote and turned on an old fashioned TV.
Ā After static appeared on screen, the footage showed the group killing off individuals.
Ā Elektriza bashing a red demonās head with a mullet.
Ā Moxxia shooting a blue person tied up to a chair.
Ā Chandra grabbing a red person in his mouth and shaking the person side to side like a wolf.
Ā Millard beheading a blue person with a spear and laughing.
Ā Ā Elektriza watched with a relaxed smile on her face, holding up a blue bowl of popcorn. Chandra sat on the table, popping popcorn pieces into his mouth. Millard perched on the table, enjoying the show, but Moxxia stood off to the side with a grumpy face.
Ā Posters hung from the walls, one showing Elektriza and her two brothers, Tillo (an imp with short black hair) and Barb Wire (a smiling imp with ram-like horns.) It was a picture of them at a circus, the banner reading āThe Amazing Imp Siblings!ā Elektriza remembered the good times she had with them when they performed on stage. Barb Wire would balance on a tightrope, holding a pole with flames on either end. Tillo tamed and evaded manticores, dragons and other beasts that were released into the arena. Elektriza would sing songs about murdering people and they would all pose and bow at the end as the crowd cheered.
Ā That was before Elektriza moved on to form I.M.P., recruited Moxxia and Millard, and adopted Chandra.
Ā Elektriza moved a hand toward her chest and sighed with content. āAh, those were good times.ā
Ā Moxxia spoke up as Millard ate a piece of popcorn. āWe donāt need any reminding, mamā, considering you blew most of our salaries on an obnoxious TV ad last week, one that you then additionally paid to have run for a full three hours on a channel, nobody watches!ā
Ā Elektriza turned her head, insulted. āHey, uh, excuse me?ā She stood up. āWhatās āobnoxiousā about a super fun jingle, all right? Itās a fun distraction when an advertisementās spitting bullshit.ā She walked across the room.
Ā āPeople love musicals, mamā,ā Millard added.
Ā Elektriza smiled. āExactly, Millard, and weāre basically doing a musical.ā Elektriza did jazz hands before pointing rapidly at Moxxia with a scowl.
Ā āAre you gonna crush my musical theater dreams like my mom did?ā She lowered her head.
Ā āMamāā¦ā Moxxia began, but her boss cut her off.
Ā āBecause right now, all I see is just my momās asshole talking to me, crushing my dreams of being, who I truly am inside.ā She turned his head away.
Ā Millard leaned in toward his wife and spoke with a teasing tone. āAre you trying to crush her dreams, Moxxia?ā
Ā āIā¦what?ā she asked, looking at him. Millard leaned in close and stuck out his tongue, tail curling. āI thought I knew you.ā Moxxia rolled her eyes; her husband loved to annoy her.
Ā Elektriza turned back to Moxxia, tears in her eyes. āI canāt believe you, Moxxia. And after I made you Employee of the Month.ā She held a picture of Moxxia with her mouth open in a roar, snake tongue showing.
Ā Moxxia threw up her hands, āOkay, mamā Iām sorry, but a commercial jingle is not comparable to musical theater. Nobody actually likes the jingles.ā
Ā āI liked it!ā Millard pipped up.
Ā Moxxia turned to him, finger shaking, āDo notā¦do not agree with her in front of me.ā
Ā Ā Chandra sat, bored, playing on his phone. Moxxiaās head appeared on the screen but was crushed by a weight and then blown up by a bomb. At one point her face was sliced in half as āboom!ā flashed across the screen.
Ā Moxxia spoke, hands forward in front of her. āIād like to go on record and say that incident with shooting the kid was Chandraās fault. Dispatch is supposed to give us the right info on the target. Itās very simple.ā
Ā āOh sit on some boobs, Moxxia,ā Chandra replied without looking up.
Ā Moxxia stuttered angrily, looking for a comeback. āYou sitā¦sit on aā¦aā¦do your job!ā She slammed her palm on the table.
Ā Elektriza scolded her. āHey, now we donāt blame our screw-ups on Chandra, okay? He didnāt do anything wrong.ā She hugged him and nuzzled her head against his cheek, the hellhound growling at her to get off.
Ā Moxxia stared in disbelief. āAre you kidding me, mamā? Heās awful!ā
Ā āThe point is, Chandra is a valued member of our family and we donāt get rid of families.ā
Ā āWe arenāt a family, mamā,ā Moxxia pointed out. āYou are the boss. We are the employees. You treat him like heās some troubled teenager. Heās more like a meth-addicted homeless man you let run the phones.ā
Ā Chandra flipped her the bird.
Ā āNow, that is offensive,ā remarked Elektriza, walking to the window, pulling open the blinds. āWithout homeless people, I wouldnāt have half the joy and laughter I do in this life.ā
Ā Outside, a homeless imp with a broken horn and ragged grey clothing held up a sign that read āMonee helps. Satan Bless.ā An imp man with black clothing and little bat wings blushed at Elektriza who waved and did a playful raise of eyebrows before closing the blinds.
Ā Moxxia crossed her arms. āWhile weāre on the subject of āfamily,ā can you stop finding me and Millard outside of work?ā
Ā āCome on, itās not that big a deal,ā Millard said.
Ā Moxxiaās eyes grew wide. āExcuse meā¦what?! She was in our fucking fridge! She was spying on me while I was asleep. And worse, she fucking filmed me and you while we were singing and about to kiss!ā
Ā Elektriza giggled. āI still have it on camera.ā
Ā āItās fine, honey,ā Millard replied to Moxxia, patting her shoulder. āThe āspoiler alert, butterās spoiled!ā was a funny use of wordplay Elektriza used.ā
Ā āNo way,ā Moxxia countered. āI had a great dream about my parents being murdered and Elektriza interrupted it.ā
Ā āI was just curious,ā Elektriza responded.
Ā āJustā¦stopā¦doing that,ā Moxxia growled.
Ā āI donāt see what the issue is,ā said Elektriza with a mischievous grin. āSomething you donāt want me seeing?ā
Ā āNo!ā Moxxia spat.
Ā āYour shaggy flower blossoms?ā Elektriza asked.
Ā Chandra giggled under his breath.
Moxxia was fed up. āMamā, what you say and how you act is totally inappropriate!ā
Ā Millard pulled her down gently. āCalm down, Mox, youāre gonna have another panic attack!ā
Ā āI am calm!ā she yelled.
Ā Millard rubbed her head and soothed her. āShh, there, there.ā Moxxia whimpered.
Ā Elektriza spoke again with a childish grin, making a hole with two fingers and tapping the opening with one finger. āLook, I donāt judge the boring couple stuff you do outside of work hours, so donāt judge me.ā
Ā Veins popped out of Moxxiaās yellow eyes. āOh I do judge you, mamā. Quite a lot, actually.ā She crossed her arms as Millard gasped in horror.
Ā āMox, sheās our boss!ā
Ā āNo, itās fine, Millard,ā said Elektriza with a wave of her hand. āYour wife is justā¦how do I say this without being offensiveā¦retarded.ā
Ā āDoes immaturingly insulting me make you feel better about your sad, single, life?ā
Ā Elektriza leaned in toward Moxxia. āYes it does, actually.ā
Ā Chandra appeared to agree, because he added to Moxxia, āThe only reason you have a husband is because youāre easy to manage.ā
Ā āNo sheās not, you turd!ā Millard yelled, holding up two middle fingers.
Ā āDo not talk to my assistant that way!ā Elektriza demanded. āHeās sensitive!ā
Ā āYes I am!ā Chandra barked.
Ā Then a squeaky voice sounded from nearby: āYou guys are all fucking assholes.ā
Ā Everyone turned and stared at a girl wearing an orange shirt with a planet on it. She had curly brown hair, white skin and was connected to a monitor.
Ā Elektriza pointed at her. āOh shut up, kid, youāre lucky to witness this.ā
Ā Moxxia pinched her nose and sighed in frustration. āUgh, this companyās such a mess!ā
Ā āDid someone call me?ā Preppyās voice rang from the hallway. He opened the door a crack. āI can clean up any messes you may have!ā
Ā āNo!ā Moxxia called. āGo away!ā
Ā Preppy slowly closed the door.
Ā An awkward silenceā¦
Ā āAlright, letās get back to talking about my outfit!ā Elektriza said out of nowhere.
Ā āNobody was talking about that,ā Chandra mentioned.
Ā āWhich is why Iām trying to get that ball rolling, so how does it look? Itās good, right?ā
Ā The kid ripped off the wires from her stomach.
Ā āIt was hell pretending to be paralyzed so you fuckshits wouldnāt kill me, but now? I want that. I want death. You!ā she pointed to Elektriza. āYouāre a selfish, greedy clown. And Iām a kid! Weāre supposed to like clownsā¦even the creepy ones!ā
Ā Moxxia scoffed. āHey now, thatās not veryā¦ā
Ā The kid cut her off. āIf I wanted to talk to a spineless jackass bitch, Iād rip out your spine and ask you some shit.ā
Ā Moxxia shivered in fear.
Ā āThatās my wife youāre talking to!ā Millard yelled.
Ā The kid snickered. āThatās your wife?! I figured you for a man whore, but I didnāt know you needed it that bad! Fucking with an old lady, ha!ā
Ā Millard fumed at his wife being called ugly and weak. To think that he would have sex with anyone else at randomā¦
Ā āAnd you!ā The kid pointed at Chandra.
Ā āYeah? What about me?ā Chandra asked.
Ā The kid crossed her arms and smirked. āNothing. I donāt talk to dogs. Iām a cat person.ā
Ā Chandra whined before turning back to his phone.
Ā āWow,ā said Elektriza. āYou know, kid, you kind of are a piece of shit.ā
Ā āOh you gotta admit, sheās good,ā Moxxia muttered.
Ā A ding came from Chandraās phone. He smiled. āOh fuck guys, I just got a text from our client. Guess she was the right target after all.ā
Ā āWho?ā Elektriza asked.
Ā āHer.ā
Ā āMe?ā asked the kid.
Ā āYep,ā he confirmed.
Ā āThey wanted us to kill an actual child?ā Elektriza asked.
Ā āThatās what theyāre saying,ā Chandra said.
Ā Elektriza grinned and twirled a gun in her hand. Her job just got more fun and easier. āWell Christ on a stick, I guess there is a god!ā She fired and shot the girl in the chest. She flopped down dead with a yell in a pool of blood, smoke and sparks lingering in the air.
Ā Elektriza spoke about I.M.P.: āYou know folks, with this company, I really wanted to prove that weāre capable of doing the same things anyone else can, like killing people. So from us here at the Immediate Murder Professionals group, we promise to settle your unfinished business or your money is gone and youāre never getting it back and you can write us a bad review but weāll play dumb to it because itās Hell and no one fucking cares.ā
Ā Elektriza, Moxxia and Millard kicked the dead kid on the floor, enjoying themselves. Blood coated the floor and walls. Chandra snapped a picture with his phone. After the imps left with the body, Preppy came in and gasped.
Ā āWell, time to clean this up. What a mess!ā He hummed a happy tune as he mopped up the blood at rapid speed.
Ā Elektriza and Moxxia wore gas masks and green suits as Elektriza sawed off the girlās arm and Moxxia sawed her chest, organs spilling out into a sack below. Millard tossed an arm into the sack and Chandra held it open. Moxxia dropped the girlās severed head inside and shared a loving smile with her husband.
Ā Etched in red graffiti on a dumpster behind them were the words āDevil,ā āHell,ā āHappy Hotel,ā and āIām always chasing rainbows.ā A pentagram, and wide smiles were also doodled on the surface.
Ā Elektriza embraced the entire group in a forceful hug, knocking the phone from Chandraās hands.
Ā āYou know, even though this kid was a target, sheās still a child. Itās important that weāve handled this going forward, respectfully.ā She wrapped her long tail around the group, all of them smiling genuinely. For despite all their problems, they were still a company family.
Ā Back in the human world, a crying blonde father wearing a pink shirt held up a paper saying āmissing girl.ā Below in large letters on the news was: āDad sucks at drawing own kid!ā
Ā The father spoke into the microphone, āPlease, if anyone has seen my little Ellieā¦ā
Ā He gasped as a sack dropped into his hands. He and the news reporter looked up to see a smiling Elektriza, Millard, and Moxxia through a portal up above.
Ā āYouāre welcome!ā Elektriza called with a wave before the portal closed.
Ā The father looked inside the bag and screamed. āMy daughter! Sheās dead! Noooooo!ā
The Dororo manga is something that has been very dear to me for a long time. The entire time I was watching the anime, I was mentally weighing it against the manga, trying to decide on which one I thought was better. For the most part, it was a pretty even competition...but then an inciting event happened which significantly tipped me in favor of one over the other. But first, a comparison!
Plot Arcs
Ā - Bandai: Thereās a bit more intrigue in the manga, but on the whole, I think itās about even here. Bandaiās monster form is freaking beautiful in both of them.
Ā - The Cursed Sword: The anime wins, by a nose. The mood, the tension, the symbolism, the much more obvious love of Tanosuke for his sister - I think this is one of the best put together episodes in the series.Ā
However, what it was missing from the manga was Dororoās anger at the world in general and the reason that he wanted a sword so bad. Anime Dororo picks it up by accident, isnāt following Hyakki around to steal one of his swords to begin with and isnāt a person who gets terribly angry. Itās more of a matter of differently written characters.
Would I have liked to see Anime Dororo get angry though? ...maybe. But that wasnāt what the episode was about.
Ā - Mio: Point goes to the anime. I love how Mioās story is expanded and how much more personality sheās given. Hyakkiās rampage is my favorite bit of animation in the entire show.Ā
Itās also interesting how the placement of Mioās arc affects what Hyakkiās character is like too. In the manga, by the time heās telling the story as a flashback, heās world-weary and his heart has turned to ice. In the anime, his heartbreak is fresh.
Ā - Dororoās Backstory: Point to the manga by a wide margin. Dororoās parents are much less complex and interesting in the anime and the whole episode felt a bit rushed. Of course, thatās a lot of backstory to fit in one episode though.
Ā - Banmon: Hmmmmm. This arc serves a much different thematic purpose in the anime, though it (somewhat) follows the events of the manga.Ā
On one hand, the sequence in which Tahoumaru dies is one of my favorite in comics, period. It feels so dreamlike and disconnected from reality and in a manga which doesnāt shy away from showing fountains of blood, itās shocking in that it doesnāt show a drop.Ā
On the other hand, OH MY GOD Nuiās near-suicide was heartbreaking, the fact that they gave a backstory for Tahoumaruās eye was phenomenal and I was utterly shocked and elated that Sukeroku actually found his family.
Itās a draw.
Ā - Fair Fudo - The anime. The fact that Iām having a hard time remembering how it went down in the manga says it all. Also having Dororo be the one to rescue Hyakkimaru this time was an excellent decision.
Ā - Sabame: Oh my god, the manga. Bad. Bad anime.
Ā - Shiranui: Gonna go with the manga here. I am forever salty that the anime left out theĀ āIām a boyā line.
However, the anime also gets half a point for ACTUALLY PUTTING TREASURE IN THE TREASURE HOARD and not rendering that entire storyline pointless. -.-
Ā - Nue: Thereās not really a point of comparison here. Itās the same monster transplanted in a totally different storyline. But, with that said...
Do I give a single shit about Manga Nue?
Nope.
Do I give a shit about Anime Nue?
Yes.
Ā - Midoro: Hmm. Another toss-up.
I found Midoroās death in the manga much more affecting. The image of a dying horse, riddled with arrows, spending her last moments wandering among the fallen - that says something more about the grimness of war and the innocents caught in the middle of it than turning her into a horse bomb ever could.
However...I was so freaking THRILLED that Hyakkimaru got to ride her in the anime. My desktopās background still contains a screenshot from the episode 22 preview of him doing that. Their stories are not so different and in this adaptation, it felt so eerily natural for them to end up together. Their partnership was utterly horrifying and glorious to watch.
Characters
Ā - Hyakkimaru: Thereās a lot to unpack here. The differences between characterizations are like night and day. So, Iāll start by taking you on a journey.
I loved Manga Hyakkiās snark. I loved his aloofness, his sarcasm, his arsenal of ridiculous weapons, his terror at the thought of having a mother who abandoned him, his rage at the thought of other children being abandoned, the way he hated the fox for telling him who Tahoumaru was more than he hated himself for killing him.Ā
Watching the first few episodes of the anime was kind of difficult for me. It felt like the snark had been surgically removed and thus, was not there to lighten up the intense drama of the rest of the story.Ā
But, as time went on and I got to see more of who Anime Hyakki was, he grew on me like nothing else. The stark contrast between his gentleness and his seething hatred of all beings who would take advantage of another, human or demonic. His insistent desire to be heard, to be listened to, even if he has to scream to get the point across. His unshakable resolve in the face of an entire world against him. The fact that his disability is something that actually limits him - that he canāt read minds or use telepathy and that learning to speak is something that takes the entire runtime of the show to accomplish - that is compelling. And so amazingly refreshing.
This oneās a draw.
Ā - Dororo: The Worldās Greatest Thief really doesnāt do a whole lot of thieving in this anime (once. literally once. offscreen. unless you count the attempted theft of Hyakkiās reforged swords). But then again, Dororo is also a way different character in this adaptation.
In the manga, heās much more of a little snot. Heās furious with the world and constantly looking for ways to get back at it. He travels with Hyakki because he wants to steal from him. Heās not welcome in some villages because heās such an awful kleptomaniac of a child. I do not have trouble believing that this Dororo has a demon in him that Hyakki has to kill if he wants his arm back.
Anime Dororo...is the complete opposite of that. Heās the kindest, most loving character in the entire show. He looks at a horrible world and doesnāt shake his fist at the sky - he tries his damnedest to make it better.Ā
Both characterizations have their high points and their low ones. Manga Dororo is an entertaining little monster. Anime Dororo is an angel and the prevailing voice of reason. I think it would have been pretty interesting to end up with a character somewhere in between those two extremes, but, alas.
Manga Dororoās arc is about taking responsibility and figuring out how to be someone better.
Anime Dororoās arc is about raising someone else up to be better.
Also calling this one a draw.
Ā - Tahoumaru: THE ANIME, by a mile. Or more. Way more! Itās not even a question. His depth and complexity, his compassion and anger, his deep love for his land, his people and his friends - HOT DAMN IS THIS A WELL WRITTEN CHARACTER. Manga Tahoumaru looks like a missed opportunity compared to him.
Ā - Jukai: I wasnāt terribly fond of Anime Jukai at first. My first thought upon seeing the Jukai-centered episode wasĀ āJukaiās an asshole =(ā
Like, Jesus Christ, please give him a leg. He limped so far looking for you.
But, over time, I came to understand him better. He is a character in stasis, one who hasĀ āgiven up all powerā, responsibility and desire. If he does nothing, if he devotes his life to pointless pursuits for those who can no longer benefit from them, then he can hurt no one.Ā
Anime Jukai is one of my favorite characters now. The kind, fatherly figure of the manga who was delighted to know that Hyakki loves him has his place, but the point goes to the anime here.
Ā - Nui no Kata: ANIME. Another character whose role was fantastically expanded, to great affect. Her story feels like the chapter that was left out of the manga.
Ā - Saburota: Anime Saburota is Saburota in name only. Canāt really compare here.
Ā - Daigo: To be honest, I donāt find either version of Daigo to be particularly compelling. Heās more important as a plot device than as a person. Itās a draw...unless Daigoās ending from the stage play makes it to the anime, at which point Anime Daigo would win.Ā
Stage Play Daigo gave me chills, man.
Ā - Biwamaru: Our resident cryptic shit and spirit guide might be the only character who made the transition unchanged. Heās exactly like his manga self personality-wise and is the only character whose design was not significantly changed.
Ā - Shiranui: I really like that anime Shiranui actually fed his arm to the sharks! Itās like he took Manga Shiranuiās desire to be eaten by them and actually acted on it. Anime wins.
Ā - Itachi: Manga all the way. His sole redeeming features were that he felt badly for stripping Dororo and how he subsequently chose to respect his gender identity. Lacking those features...heās a much less sympathetic and interesting character. He also went down screaming battle cries at the samurai who were attacking him and defending Dororo.Ā
Overarching Themes
Ā - Manga: I believe that the overarching theme of the manga is that of otherness and how the world reacts to it. The hardest hitting scenes for me are the ones in which Hyakki and Dororo are thrown out of a village they saved by villagers unable to understand that theyāre just as human as them. Hyakkimaru doesnāt struggle to regain his body because itād be better than a prosthetic one (acid gun leg! cāmon! the heck would you need a flesh one for?? if it gets shot you can just build another) - he does it because he wants to be seen as human, however long he has to fight to do it.Ā
Ā - Anime: Individual vs. collective responsibility. Anime Hyakki actually suffered long term harm because of the demon deal. His prostheses and abilities have considerably more limits. He wants to regain his body because he wants to live and experience all the things heās been missing. But...in this case thereās a cost. The fact that his actions directly cause calamities in Daigo - thatās a fantastic choice that makes the story bigger than just one person fighting to be human. As much as I love the manga and its themes, I think the animeās central conflict is slightly more compelling.
The Tipping Point
It was this scene specifically.
The desperation, the futility, the love so strong it destroys - these arenāt things that happen in the manga.Ā
Manga Hyakki is constantly trying to get rid of Dororo, belittling him, forcibly reading his mind and fighting over something stupid more often than not. He cares about him, in his way, but would his heart crack in two if Dororo died and there was no way he could have prevented it? Probably. For a bit, anyway. Then it would harden again and heād go back to doing what he was doing without Dororo.Ā
Their bond in the anime is something else. It is the beating heart of the entire story. Itās the reason why Hyakki is so desperate to get his final pieces back. He wants to be able to save Dororo with hands that can lift a rock. He wants to see the fall colors with him.Ā
Episode 20 was the one that pushed me over the edge into finding the anime superior to the manga...which is an amazing accomplishment, considering how dear the manga has been to me for so long.Ā
I cannot believe how excited I am for the final episode.
Itās the end of the decade, and what a ride itās been this year alone! Iāve made a lot of artistic progress this year! Finally getting a tablet has really paid off, hehe... Hereās last yearsā review!
If youād like to hear my thoughts for each month, you can read more below!
January
I had just gotten a little tablet for Christmas a month earlier, and so at this point I was trying my best to get a feel for the new tool! Itās here that I definitely laid down the base of what I wanted my art to be - a lot more freeform and doodley than my art in the past years! I think it fits my art mood a lot more in retrospect. This drawing was when I did a little game with my friend Dalblauw where both of us drew Plumber Peach, based on a SupperMarioBroth post we found!
February
Around this time, I was having a major kick with FanCom. The new Discord was in its prime, and ComProject had been resuming with relative success! Boy what Iād do to get the community and project thriving again... Anyways, I was still getting a feel for my tablet, so I practiced a lot on FanCom designs, like redrawing my very first FanPro, 2003!
March
Chilla Month!! At the time, I thought I would be going hard on developing this game, which hasnāt turned out exactly right... however, I still have plans for these characters (when I donāt have to worry about programming for VR)! I mildly redesigned Chilla, Edith, and Merida, and also came up with two new characters! Eugine, the timid sheepish boy, and Jack, the hat person dad whoās trying his best!
April
This one has a bit of a sad story... The musical artist Wowaka was a heavy influence on my younger self, and his music still has a profound influence on me to this day. He passed away that month, and I was so struck that I felt the need to make a tribute of some kind. This was an animated image based on Rolling Girl.
May
The end of the semester of college is always one of the busiest and most stressful times, so not too much came out of me then. Plus I had started to get burned out from how few people were submitting for ComProject... But I gave it my best shot, and some of my best designs still came from this month! I also drew one of my best works at the time - Nyaga striking a little pose! This is notable for being the first time I tried actively shading since getting my tablet!
June
This is when I finally understood what I wanted to do with my art. I wanted to do a little pop-y sort of art with FanPro 0049, and what I ended up doing basically defined my art style from then on. Dynamic posing, backgrounds with popping colors and gradients, stronger shading, and notably the silhouette border. Itās an emphasis on fun looks!
July
Artfight time! I took this time as a means of experimenting even more with what I started last month, and I think this is when I fully grasped the sort of poses I wanted to do. One of my absolute favorites from this time was my drawing of Dalblauwās character Naomi!
August
Once again ending on Artfight, and another character from Dalblauw again - Sam. However, this particular piece is important to me because itās the first time I drew a background with any level of complexity, and properly did a pixel animation involving wind. I did a lot of research and planning, and learned a lot as an animator from this!
September
One of my favorite things I did was a little series on FanCom monster girls! It was four different works with the same premise: a halfbody of a design with the crop being stylistically approached based on their unique attributes. It was a lot of fun, and Iām definitely thinking of doing something like it again!
October
The month that changed my life the most, easily. Rivals of Aether revealed Workshop support, and after some thinking, I decided it was time for me to create something I could finally play! I started off small - four buddies based on FanCom designs. Then, I created my first character, Shy Guy! He was a blast to work on, and I learned a lot about animating and coding in the process! People say heās fun too, which is a great plus!
November
Continuing with the Workshop, I had released two more buddies based on Super Mario Bros. 2, and finally had to challenge myself to create an original stage. What I ended up with was Subcon, a unique stage layout with (mostly) original sprites! It was the first time Iāve done a background of this complexity, and it was surprisingly fun!
December
And finally, this month, I started missing regular art. Spriting and coding and animating is fun, but itās nice to take a break and put some variety in the mix, so I drew Nyaga again! I think this piece is important because you can directly see how my art changed from half a year earlier! More popping colors, more distinct style, more dynamic poses, I realized that I really had improved!
I think thatās the important takeaway from not just this year, but this decade as a whole. Iāve changed a lot over time, and I have a lot to look forward to! See ya next year with more art and gaming content, because you know Iām not stopping now!
š®ššššššš šššššššššššĀ | 23/10/19
During the morning we went to the photography department of the school where we would start the day off there by filming our own footage to rotoscope later on. There were no restrictions as to what we were allowed to do in front of the camera and green screen, but we had to move from one side of the screen to the other. I decided to go for a gun man or James Bond type of vibe. I didnāt want to just do a simple walk or run cycle, but instead I wanted to challenge myself a little. I did this by sneaking into frame, holding my hands up as if I was holding a gun (this added a prop that I would have to draw form scratch during the process of rotoscoping) then doing a turn and running back out the frame. When recording the clips in the green screen room, I also decided to turn around and then turn back while moving to add to the difficulty of animating everything together. This is how both of them turned out:
I decided to go with the first of the two clips for my rotoscope. I did this simply because of the turn being slower and therefore making it more challenging to animate the gun to follow the movement in such a way that it won't look āout of placeā.
I didnāt find the time during college hours to actually do the rotoscope for this, so I did it at home using my own program (Krita) and my drawing tablet.
The process was relatively simple; I took the video and took a screenshot of each frame as I went, dragging the screen grab onto the canvas and began tracing my figure. As I went, I also drew in the gun for each frame, lining it up with the position with my hands.
To keep the appearance of the gun consistent I copied most of the frames, up until I came to the part where I had to change the perspective of which the gun is seen from (during the turn).
Once I had finished the whole rotoscope this is what I was left with:
The finished amount of frames came to 66. Quite a high number for such a short animation, but I didnāt want to take away from the fluidity and smoothness.Ā Now I could have just left it here, but I wanted to do some more experimenting. I tried out filling in the clothes with some texture to create a more interesting looking sequence, but half way through I decided to go back to the original linework since I just wasnāt happy with how it was turning out, but here was that in motion:
Instead I did a bit of brainstorming, thinking about what I could do to improve what I had already made. Hereās the mindmap of the brainstorm that I did:
So as you can see, I ended up wanting to experiment with depth, leading me to be doing something to the background. Most of the mind map is based off visual language. I found using this as the root for my brainstorm really useful due to the way you can interpret each term differently to whatever the context is. I will definitely be doing this again and experiment with it further in the future.
I had also settled on wanting to keep it monochrome (misspelling in mind map) and more specifically drawing towards the style of the classic black & white manga comic book style. Based on this, what immediately popped into my mind was this program I recall trying out years and years ago called Medi Bang Paint Pro, or as I think it was used to called; Medi Bang. I was probably around 12 or 13 when I first downloaded it, but I didn't know what I was doing what so ever, so I quickly gave up. For a long time it wasnāt compatible with Mac up until recently; so I decided to take a shot and download it again. The program is free; but that wasnāt the main reason to why I wanted to try out this program again in particular. It has a lot of great tools for drawing and building comic pages, and I thoughtĀ āWhat would it look like if I made a background inspired by traditional manga?ā- so thatās what I did.
I wasnāt sure if I was going to be able to pull it off at first, so I did a little test run beforehand and I really liked the result:
So the way that I did this was by taking a picture (that I unfortunately have lost now) and then proceeding by changing the levels of the picture, playing around with it until itās primarily just blacks and whites. With a brush tool I began cleaning everything up a little by either erasing unwanted bits or adding additional linework just to emphasise on the subject and shapes within the drawing. I added leaves and other vegetation with some pre-made brushes that came with the program. The last step was to add a screentone of a clouded sky to add a bit of texture, shading and general interest to the whole piece, and voila! Done. This technique is super quick and efficient for creating backgrounds for comics of this style, though I still prefer when everything is painted by hand. The screentone has a very recognisable style to it and is quite often used in mangaās. One of the ones that come to mind for me is Berserk. I have always loved the artwork of that comic series; itās the kind of art that you could stare at for hours on end and not get bored with. When looking at the artwork from the series, you can clearly see the technique of screentones are being used to create a lot of additional detail to each panel.
Here are some examples of some screentones:
In this example, it has been used for the background. A screentone with blobs lightly shaded has been added to almost create some sort of mist, changing the whole mood and feel of the panel very effectively.
Like mentioned before, in Berserk, the screentones are mostly used as an extra bit of atmospheric detail, rather than being used for any of the shading which is all hand drawn. In this example, it has been used for the lettering/type and again for the background. It creates a gritty and sort of dirty effect, emphasising how he is in a battlefield with monsters around him; definitely not a place you could callĀ ācleanā.
In this example, different kinds of sceentones have been used in each panel. In the panel to the left, the opaque stripes are a type of screentone very often used to indicate either speed, focal point or action of some kind. Not only that, but at the bottom of the panel a softer pattern of screentone has been used to create the look of dirt or sand, again with a gritty texture to emphasise on the fact that the character, Guts, is inferior at this moment.
In this super epic and intense illustration, you can again see the great use of screentones, most notably used for the background yet again. It really helps to create a strong feel to each illustration. The use of tone is especially important in manga or comics, since it so often is done in just black & white, so you have no use of colour; this is where screentones come in as a great tool to use for just this.
So, with all of this brainstorming and researching done, and by using the same technique as I did when doing theĀ ātestā, I began drawing. I used this picture which I recall taking somewhere on the border to Germany as the base image:
I chose this because it has thatĀ āstreetā vibe to it, which I thought could be cool with the whole theme ofĀ āgun manā. Very edgy, very edgy indeed.
This gif above shows loosely the process of the piece from start to finish. It was mostly just me playing around and figuring out all the tools of the program, but it was quite fun to put together.
With the background now complete, I put it into my rotoscope, went over each frame and painted the shape of myself in the animation white and was finally finished with the final rotoscope; being the third version or option that I did.
I am very happy with how it turned out in the end, and I have definitely learnt masses with this exercise of rotoscoping something that that I have filmed myself. I think if I were to further improve on this, Iād definitely consider animating the background itself (birds flying or leaves rustling), or maybe even try shading the subject somehow, taking inspiration from mangaās such as Berserk or any of Junji Itoās work.
I decided to try out asking a few of my peers in the class what their opinion was on the final rotoscope. The feedback that I received was purely positive; the people I asked said they couldn't think of any particular way of improving the finished product. They said it both looked great as well as it answered what the task was questioning and challenging us to do.
To me, this really shows and proves that the work I have done here is successful work that I can be proud of and take what I have learnt through doing this task with me for the future, without doubting if what I have learnt is of quality.
Of Numbers and Strange Friendships
TITLE: Of Numbers and Strange Friendships CHAPTER NO./ONE SHOT: 24/? AUTHOR:Ā nekoamamori ORIGINAL IMAGINE:Ā Imagine Loki being friends with Peter Parker RATING: T NOTES/WARNINGS: None so far. Ā Also on AO3Ā here
The group continued telling stories throughout dinner, and the multitude of desserts that were served to the group.Ā Everyone seemed the most interested in Friggaās stories, as they wanted to know more about young Thor and Loki.
The boys both groaned when she pulled out old stories to tell.Ā She told them about the day the boys accidentally led a stampede of bilgesnipe through the palace and straight to the throne.Ā They had looked about six at the time by Midgardian standards and had stumbled upon a herd when theyād been playing in the royal forest.Ā Both boys had been scared out of their minds and ran straight to their father for help.Ā He was livid at the damage, but had been so relieved that his boys were safe and had at least had the brains to get help before they were trampled by bilgesnipe.
She told them of ten year old Thor coming up with āget helpā.
Loki groaned loudly at that story and buried his head in his hands so he didnāt have to relive the story.
He, however, was laughing in delight with the others when Frigga told the story of the creation of āmy apologiesā.Ā It was a tactic Loki had come up with and was his equivalent of āget helpā.Ā It consisted of Thor bumbling around like an oaf knocking into things and spilling drinks on people while Loki followed behind him going āMy apologies, my brother is so clumsy and such an oafā.Ā By the time they made it through the room they were tricking, the secret scroll, map, or magical item they were after (along with quite a bit of gold or whatever else Loki fancied taking) would be in the brothersā possession with none of the people the wiser until after the pair were long gone.Ā
āThatās brilliant!ā Peter said approvingly.Ā Loki grinned across the table at his friend.
āI always thought so,ā he replied with a smirk at Thor.
āItās not,ā Thor protested.Ā āI hate it, itās humiliating,ā
āNot for me, itās not,ā Loki replied.Ā āAnd I hate āget helpā.Ā It is way more humiliating as you literally throw me at enemies,ā Loki growled.Ā He loathed āget helpā. Ā
Thor laughed.Ā āIt is not humiliating for me,ā he replied jovially and it took the fact that Frigga was sitting next to him for Loki not to draw his daggers and stab Thor across the table. Ā
He was mollified quickly when all of the desserts came out.
At least he was until Frigga held her palm up and with a shimmer of magic, showed the group holographic images of her sons growing up.Ā The team loved it.Ā Her sons wanted to crawl under the table and die since they couldnāt stop her. The only saving grace was that she didnāt pull out naked baby images.Ā It was a close call, though.Ā There was one of a young Thor teaching a younger Loki to walk; the boys sparring as children;Ā them coming back successfully from their first hunt alone dirty and injured, but successful and looking so proud; a teenage Thor in the foreground swinging a sword while Loki sat in the window-seat in the background reading; the brothers as young adults, Thorās arm around Lokiās shoulders as the two both laughed over something; the look of exhausted pride when Loki passed his master magician trial; a formal event that had both brothers taking their place on the stairs before the throne of Asgard; the last was a formal portrait of the royal family and they all looked so happy in it.Ā
The team loved seeing that the Asgardians, while royal and literal gods, were also a family and were also just normal people living their lives.
Aunt May returned the favor, showing pictures to Frigga on her phone of Peter growing up. Loki laughed when it was Peterās turn to wish he could crawl under the table and die.Ā āAunt May~~ā he whined, but that didnāt stop his aunt from sharing pictures.Ā
Eventually, the massive collection of desserts were eaten (mostly by Loki) and Tony paid the bill, not even cringing at the massive check, though anyone else at the table would have.Ā āThanks, Mr. Stark.Ā It was a fantastic dinner,ā Peter enthused as the group was leaving the restaurant. Ā
āYes, it was lovely, thank you for inviting us,ā Aunt May agreed.Ā She hugged Frigga and no one was one bit surprised. āIt was lovely to meet you,ā the two had bonded over their intelligent adopted sons and how similar it was raising them. Ā
Unshed tears brimmed in Peterās eyes when heād realized that Aunt May thought of him as her son.Ā He loved his aunt dearly, but he hadnāt even considered that she thought of him as a son and not just her nephew sheād taken in. Loki chuckled and wrapped his arm around the teenās shoulders.Ā Peter gave him a lopsided grin in reply, relieved by Lokiās silent reassurance.
The group made their way out of the tower, laughing and talking as they headed back to the vehicles to return to the tower or Aunt Mayās house in her and Peterās case. Ā
Though they were Avengers and superheroes and used to things going wrong every time they were having five minutes of happiness, none of them were expecting the men with guns to appear out of nowhere.Ā None of them were expecting Hydraās monsters to attack the group.
It was fairly obvious that the team was there that night.Ā Stark had made the reservations in his name, theyād arrived in limos, and the press had been there announcing their presence to the world. The group was so used to press everywhere they went that it hadnāt even crossed their minds that it might be a problem.Ā
It was a problem.
A definite problem.
The team circled automatically, pushing Aunt May and Pepper to the middle where theyād be protected. Loki saw the fear in Peterās eyes.Ā He couldnāt fight this battle and keep his identity secret.Ā āDonāt fret, arachnid.Ā We will keep you safe,ā Loki reassured him as he assessed the situation and as Peter was shoved into the middle of the circle with Aunt May and Pepper.Ā
With a shimmer of magic, Loki was in his battle armor, Thor raised Mjolnir to summon his own with lightning, Stark summoned one of his ironman suits through Jarvis, and Bruce summoned the Hulk, which still made Loki cringe.Ā Everyone else would be fighting in their formalwear.Ā
That wouldnāt do. Ā
āHold still,ā Loki told them and let his magic flow over the group. He found Friggaās hand linked in his and smiled warmly as she added her magic to his.Ā In a moment, the group was in their battle armor and leapt into the fray.Ā Loki looked to Wanda who was new to fighting with the team and didnāt go on many missions.Ā āWanda, stay with Sif and my mother, protect the civilians,ā he told her, giving her a clear order, a clear duty. Ā
And his most important mission, though he didnāt say the words.
He didnāt give her the unspoken order, but she nodded, she understood what he wouldnāt say:
Protect my mother
None of them were expecting Frigga to draw a blade as long as her arm as armor shimmered into place over her formal gown.Ā None of them except the Asgardians were expecting that anyway.Ā Frigga had taught Loki to fight and Asgardians were a warrior race.Ā She, Sif, and Wanda moved the civilians away from the battle.
Loki breathed a sigh of relief when his loved ones were safe and joined the others in the battle.Ā He kept one eye on the group of civilians, proud of Wanda for doing so well keeping the others safe. He made a note to tell her as much later.Ā Praise from Loki was rare and she cherished every single instance of it when he was teaching her magic.Ā
The battle was harder than expected and raged for a long, long time.Ā The team was wearing thin when Loki was thrown across the battlefield by a giant.Ā He crashed at Friggaās feet and struggled to get back to his feet quickly as the giant thundered over to them.Ā It tossed Sif aside effortlessly, heading straight for the defenseless civilians. Ā
For Lokiās family.
Loki growled as he got to his feet, jumping in front of Frigga to protect her.Ā He would do anything to protect his mother, including taking the blow himself. His dagger shattered at the giantās blow and he was knocked off his feet again, one of his gauntlets shattered at the impact, his shoulder piece fractured at the blow.Ā His armor was damaged in other places, but he couldnāt focus on that now.Ā
āLoki?ā Peter asked with fear in his eyes as well as his voice.Ā He couldnāt help.Ā His secret would be revealed if he helped, especially with Aunt May there.Ā There was no way to hide to change into his costume.Ā Aunt May had her arms around him, as if to protect him.Ā If only she knew. Ā
Wanda threw up a red shield to delay the giant, holding her hands up to keep it going. Ā She was still young and couldnāt attack while she was holding the shield.Ā Loki was just grateful she was inside the shield this time.Ā Heād drilled that into her during hours of magic lessons and he was glad it had stuck.Ā
The others were busy on the other monsters.Ā
Loki was alone in this fight.
Loki growled as he forced himself back to his feet as fast as his injured body would allow.
His mother, blood brother, and little sister were in danger.Ā In that moment he accepted that he had adopted Wanda as a little sister.Ā She was family to him too. Ā
His found family was in danger.
He had to defend them. Ā
He got between the giant and Wanda just in time, shoving her back before the giant could crush her skull with his bat, her shield had vanished under the pummelling from the giantās bat.Ā Loki reached up and planted his feet, bracing himself with magic to catch the bat, to stop the momentum.
It nearly threw him off his feet again, but his magic held, his more than human strength held.Ā
He reached out to summon a blade and swung automatically when the handle was in his hand.Ā Centuries of combat experience had taught him never to drop his weapon, to let nothing surprise him in battle, to fight for his life and for those he loved.Ā
He still nearly dropped his weapon after heād hit the giant with it.
He was in shock that it wasnāt one of his beloved daggers.
He was holding Mjolnir.
In fighting so hard to save his family, in that moment, he had become worthy.
ENTM Tumblr Cycle 11
Round Six: Fairy Tales, Folk Tales, and Legends from Around the World
Whew, that title is a mouthful, but we wanted to ensure that everyone had a chance to pick a story that had meaning to them.Ā We had a tale from Japan, legends from England and Nicaragua, and a whole passel of Grimmās tales to bring us full circle.Ā Ā The judges and the community all agreed that this weekās best fairy tale cosplay was:
Niāko Shae for Puss in Boots
The decision to go with a vertical shot showed off those long kitty legs to perfection, and the choice of an action shot in a dungeon (since this round was free style) let the story fully come to life.Ā Congratulations!
Our guest judge this week was Momoko, the co-host of ENTM Instagram Cycle 2.Ā Thanks Momoko!Ā We did a full on judge swap so you can also check out my critiques for IG Cycle 2, Round Two on our Discord channel!
For the Tumblr models, your critiques for this week are below if you keep on reading.
Judge Momoko
Kota:Ā I love your glam for this!! It really feels like a Hollywood take on what Little Red Riding hood would wear. Itās also very very easy to tell which fairy tale youāre showcasing, so big props to you!! The apples in the opposite corner to you help to add a couple more pops of red to the overall pic and help balance it.
Yomu: I hadnāt heard of this legend before, so first off, I wanna say thank you for teaching me something!! I thought your use of the Nanamo minion was so incredibly cute and creative!! I think the lighting was just a hair harsh on her, though, and we sort of lost all of the cute pink colors on her, but I also thought how you framed the upper half of the pic with bamboo was both a clever way to stay true to the legend and keep it from having too much empty space!!(It might take me a bit to send them all out today, ācause Iām at work, but I promise theyāll be sent today
Haila:Ā This was such a fun entry!! Iād never heard of La Mocuana and had to read about it, but I loooooove monster girls and creepy folklore in general, so Iām so happy you went with it!! After reading about it, I think you fit the story to a T!! I love the expression and how itās half-hidden, and the colors/filter really tell that youāre by yourself in a dark cave. I will say that your hair blended in a little too well with the background, but other than that, yours was so creative and fun!!
Peaceful:Ā How creative!! I never would of thought of doing King Arthur, but you really nailed it!! Itās extremely easy to tell which legend youāre replicating. Your pictureās colors are a little dull and faded, which halfway lends to it, but it also makes it a little muddy. However, I think you adding that soft back lighting over your shoulders easily draws the viewerās attention back to you, which was really clever!!
Adam:Ā I think your choice in legend was really interesting!! Thereās all sorts of aquatic-based stories, and I feel like Sinbad would be a little more difficult to convey, so props to you for choosing something challenging!! I wish I couldāve seen a more dynamic pose/more of the boat youāre standing on, but the soft muted colors in the background are such a nice combination with the yellow pop of your glam!!
Bria:Ā Beauty and the Beast is my favorite story!! I really liked your glams and how the colors complimented each other. However, it is a little difficult to tell exactly which fairy tale youāre emulating without the title, and itās hard to see who the specific model in the picture is. But I also thought that your garden courtyard background was a cute way to imply that youāre at a fairy tale castle!!
Luma: Your choice for your story was way too cute!! I never wouldāve thought of doing Jack and the Beanstalk, but Iām so glad that you did!! I think that your choice of environment was super cute, creative, and resourceful!! My biggest thing was that I couldnāt see your face, and your glam colors blended a little too well with your background, but I also liked how unbalanced your picture was; it really helped showcase how giant that beanstalk was!!
Niāko- Yours was my most favorite picture!! Your glam was so cute (going for that monotone look to match your hair and tail was a really clever way to make yourself look like a cute tabby), and the boots!! THE BOOTS!! The way that you zoomed out the camera to help elongate your legs was such a clever way to bring focus to the main part of your legend in an almost cartoony way, which Iām a big fan of. I think that your weapon choice and overall color palette is extremely well-done, too!!
Judge Ona
Haila:Ā I learned about this folktale when I took Spanish in High School. Our teacher was pretty twisted, but thatās why everyone loved Senora. I was super excited when Kat told the judges that you did this tale, and genuinely LOVE how you captured it! She hides her face and wanders the forests driven mad by betrayal. If you arenāt the vision of mad, I donāt know what is!
I love the color palette here. Sticking with blues, and only a hint of pinks, you create an eerie vibe. With the filter appearing almost translucent over you, it creates an illusion that you are actually the translucent one. Ā The glamour choice is phenomenal. In the story it says she is dressed in silks, and this is extraordinarily flowy.
My only real critique is that I cannot see your entire body, and although the filter gives a spooky feel, I wish you could have found a cave entrance or a body of water or something to add to the background. Regardless of this, this shot totally encapsulates La Mocuana, and I am so glad you picked something from Nicaraguan culture.
Niāko:Ā If you keep changing Niākoās color I will never know who I am looking at.
However, Niāko, I love the choice here! I love how you did a non-human fairytale, where your race could be used to your advantage. I love how you are being showy with your pose, as Puss and Boots most definitely was. Sword up, foot pointed forward toward the front of the image and back hand outstretched as if youāre saying āis that all?ā. I also LOVE that your glam looks like the humanoid version of the character we all know; it was an excellent choice to do a big jumpsuit instead of flashy armor.
The lighting is well placed, bringing the viewers eye to your face and the rapier, and the decision to battle such a big enemy was an excellent choice so as its size does not compete with you, because much of it lies just off screen from you.
My only real critique here, is that I wish you maybe had a smirk on your face instead of the blank expression here. A smirk would have conveyed that you are about to kick this monsterās behind, and you are a feline, not a knight. I still love this image and genuinely believe it is one of your strongest yet.
Peaceful:Ā I love your choice of story. Sword in the stone, King Arthur before he was king! Itās a well-known tale, and itās a strong story to try and cosplay. Unfortunately, you took a big chance and it didnāt quite pan out how maybe you envisioned. However, this image has many strong characteristics, and I would like to go over those for you.
First, your use of this emote or action, shows movement in your character. Bracing yourself to pull the impossible sword from solid stone. You have determination on your face and are focused on the sword. The choice of location lends to the story and is the perfect choice. I would try to avoid the large amount of deadspace in the upper right corner. I know you wanted to get Merlin in the shot, but I think you could have done without him, and closed further in on yourself.
Try next time to place a light on your face instead of the rock in the front, make sure to avoid dead space in the image, change the angle of the image so that its not an upskirt shot which often makes the physics of the clothes act funny, and be mindful of the background (that weird little purple light is very out of place. I think you have some very strong elements, and some weaker ones that you can work on for next week! Remember, you can ask Kat for advice and feedback before submitting.
Yomu:Ā Yomu finds a tiny human in a tree and immediately believes that he may have had too much to drink.
The facial expression had me in tears. You are genuinely freaked out by what you have just found. Your emote here shows excellent action and I can feel the same startling feeling that this woodcutter is feeling! I am pretty sure anyone would feel immediate concern and confusion if they were in this situation.
I love the glamour here, as the story is Japanese in origin, the use of a Japanese style robe helps to place the storyās origin. I am a little concerned about the physics of the robe, however, as it falls slightly unnaturally. The spotlight on your minion is perfect, as the story talks of a shining girl 3 inches tall. Also, excellent choice of filter with particle. I do wish, however, there was a bit more blur to the minion, as this close of a shot lends to distortion and pixelization.
Overall this is a strong image and you do a wonderful job telling the story of the woodcutter. I would loved to have seen more of this story. Try to take into account depth of field, and physics next week. Thank you for also thinking outside of the box and giving us a story from Japan!
Judge Wulf
Bria, you and your costarās outfits are very well color coordinated! Your location choice is also very appropriate, I feel, since that area of Idylshire gives off a very regal and proper feel. I am a bit concerned that you hair blocks your face! Youāre the star of this photo, so make sure youāre the one we see the most of! Always remember: when working with a costar, make sure that they are there to support you and make you look good! That being said, I adore the chemistry between the two of you. Canāt wait to see next weekās shot!
Luma, I admire the lighting in this shot. I am a major fan of bright colors, and youāve really made the greens, browns, and yellows all come together in this forest scene to make it look both awesome and welcoming all at once. Going with a vertical shot was also a very good choice, I believe, because it makes the ābeanstalkā look much more large and imposing, and by contrast you come across much smaller! My main note is this: Since youāre kneeling down and facing away from the camera, you do kind of look a little cloaked in darkness upon first glance. This is a simple fix, though! Just make sure to light up your character a bit more! Once again, Iām really impressed by your concept this week!
Niāko, the story of Puss in Boots is one of those that I read over and over again as a kid, and I think youāve captured a very nice look using the equipment and colors in game! The monster looming over you is also an amazing touch, as it makes you look small, and even more true to the tale! Iām very impressed with your shot this week, but if I had to nitpick, Iād say that itās only a little off that you arenāt looking at the bossās face, instead looking through them. Like I said, thatās only a small note though! Very good job this week!
Ā Peaceful, I instantly knew this was the story of King Arthur! Using iconic imagery to give out key details of what youāre cosplaying in a very important part of any cosplay picture, and Iām glad youāre doing that here! The picture is...very dark though. It may be just my computer monitor, but I find it pretty difficult to see your face or other details about the picture. Could this be an issue with the filter? Iāll tell you where all the darkness does work, though: in the forest behind you. The darkness gives the forest a very spooky vibe, and Iām honestly a little unnerved! For the next week, make sure your character is well lit and visible. Good luck!Ā
Judge Terrini
Adam: I feel underwhelmed by this shot. You're glamour does nicely call to an Arabic pirate, and there's the boat and water and distant shore but it doesn't really draw on the charm of the Legend of Sinbad. He was one of the early Swashbuckling archetypes and you seem very mellow in this pose. A more dynamic pose and angle would have been nice to see here, something swinging your sword or at least looking away from the camera would have been better to capture the sense of something more. This is a myth, a legend, so you want to capture people's imaginations like the story you're drawing from. Also watch your background composition when you go for something scenic like this. The weather condition colors everything to be rather samey and the sea and sky are both similarly rippled and plain so they come across as uninteresting to the eye. Play with angles and don't be afraid to drop things from your concept for the sake of better composition. Play with it.
Bria: This shot is very playful, and I do like the use of colors (love them blues and purples) as well as the fountain backdrop, but as a depiction of Beauty and the Beast it comes across as a reskin mashup of the Disney movie. It might have been nice if you had your guy wearing an ifrit mask or lion mask or something to up the beast factor, or perhaps went for a different scene from the story. When a competition is fierce, you've gotta push creativity to the limit and really be memorable.Ā
Haila: I'm not familiar with the fairy tale you're spinning here, but still, I'm entranced. The effects and colors you've chosen with this pose tug at my heart, like you're despairing inside a storm of magic, struggling and pushing onwards. This must certainly have been a moving fable, and your depiction here makes me want to know more.Ā
Kota: I love the colors captured in this shot, and your glamour is so cute! It's really spot on! Taking the picture by the Apple Trees in North Shroud was great to bring that touch of red into your background as well. The angle of the ground is a bit off-putting and it might be nice to have something more to the image on the ground to enhance the theme with more of a "path". There are some fences in that area too that you might have made use of to that effect. Overall, still a lovely shot.
Judge Nadede
Kota Tumet:Ā This is a pretty good image from you this week. I knew right off the bat that you were Red Riding Hood without looking at the caption, so glamour and your setting did itās job. I like the lighting that you have and very nice use of depth of field that you have going on there. Your composition I felt was nicely put together as well. I do find myself kinda wishing you were able to incorporate the wolf somewhere within your image as it seems like the only thing missing to make this feel truly complete. So far though, to me, this is your strongest image so far. Keep up the good work.
Yomu Kazul:Ā Ā I have to admit, yours was one of two stories I actually had to look up and read. After reading āTale of the Bamboo Cutter,ā I felt that you did a good job portraying the scene of the little girl popping out from the bamboo. The composition is nicely done and having the ālittle girlā looking at you helped at least guide my eye up to you and then back to her with you looking right at her. I thought it was a nice touch using Nanamo minion for the little girl instead of a lala as, if I remember reading right, the little girl was just a few inches or so tall when she pops out of the bamboo. So I applaud attention to detail there. My qualm however is when zooming out to get an overall view of the image, your foreground is a bit on the bright side and going back to where your face is in the image, itās a bit on the dark side. I would suggest try to make the light to where it is a bit brighter towards you and not so bright closer to the audience. Overall, nice work.
Luma Lee:Ā Ā Luma, while I like the composition of your shot this week, the bottom part where you are at was hard for me to make out. I wouldnāt have thought Jack and the Beanstalk at all just from looking at your image because it was a bit muddled. After reading the description that you had chosen āJack and the Beanstalk,ā it made a bit more sense as to why there is an emphasis on the tree. What Iām having a problem with is that your lighting could use work, especially around your character. With you in the shadows and your outfit is the same color as your background, you blend in a bit too much. I also think a different filter would have worked in your favor as well. So far this is your best shot compositionally for me, just work on the lighting a bit more. Good job.
Adam Evershot:Ā Ā While this is a nice shot for you Adam, I felt like you could have done more with the story of Sinbad. I find myself wishing that perhaps you couldāve brought in extras to help you with a ācrewā of some sort or brought some part of the story to life. I do find the atmospheric lighting of your image nice, I do wish that you could have done a bit more with the lighting on your character to bring you out just a bit more. Just remember when doing a cosplay type shot to find a way to bring out the story of that character more. Overall good work.
