vampire au where they can only drink the blood type they were before they were turned. other blood has an almost poisonous effect, burning them from within like acid and drinking too much of it can kill them

in the old days, before the knowledge of blood types, it made humans they could feed on absolutely precious. they're kept safe, pampered and doted on; a vampire’s most prized possession

attacking another vampire's human is seen as the highest insult; not only is it a slight against them, it also carries the implication of "i want you to starve"

it's also used as the cruelest of punishments; starving a vampire for months, until they're feral with hunger just for their torturer to throw in a random human, watching them desperately suck down poison, their instincts begging them to keep drinking even as it kills them

ghost is one of the few who survived it; thrown in a pit so deep, he saw stars in the middle of the day, left with nothing but the dried bodies of the humans roba drained without care, others with their throats slit, blood he can't drink spilled out around them

a taunt of the one thing he needs but will never get

but ghost hasn't survived this long just to give up here

he refuses to die in this stinking, rotted pit

ghost is a force of nature as he descends over roba's manor; killing any who wander into his path until the halls run red. until he gets his hands on roba and tells him a secret:

vampires can feed on the blood of any vampire, regardless of blood type

it becomes a legend in vampire high society; if you starve another, you'd best make sure they actually die

otherwise you might end up piled in a dining room, the vampire you left for dead lounging on a throne of corpses with his fangs lodged in your throat

ghost decimates roba's empire, burning it to the ground until no one dares to speak his name in fear of incurring his wrath. it's incredibly taboo for a vampire to feed off another but ghost's too powerful for anyone to challenge him and the other vampires are too scared to try. scared of what he's willing to do, the lengths he'll go to; not that they'll ever admit it

soap is the first human he ever brings to court; delicately bathed in the finest silks and jewels, his throat always bare so he can show off ghost's ownership, his bite framed in lace

he's not like the delicate waifs the other vampires show off; he doesn't cling to his master, demure and submissive. he shows off his teeth as often as any vampire, fully willing to rip out the throats of any who insult him or ghost

a feral master needs a just as feral pet

I honestly feel a lot better about having posted anything at AO3, even things I won't finish, and there's something that warms my heart about posting fic for The Borgias in 2024.

I was actually deciding between two different WIPs to represent that "phase" between my undergrad years and grad school. The other one was the prologue to a Legend of Korra/Star Wars fusion in which Noatak/Amon is Korra's father and this is revealed in S1 (I think it was going to be Tarrlok who figures it out first, lol) and it actually affects the plot and it isn't just the LOK canon plot with minor adjustments—the fusion with SW was meant to be more than vague I-am-your-father inspiration. In any case, I only ever wrote the prologue about the Noatak/Senna quasi-romance that led to Korra's existence and never even got to the sheer comedy of Korra as Tarrlok's niece :(

But the Juan and Lucrezia as dysfunctional twins one-shot is closer to being a whole fic (in a side-story way) and I did like being able to add one more to my Borgias oeuvre—and getting at least some part of that AU on AO3 after all the time I spent on it!

I like it a lot! Enough to write a whole fic about it 😁 (ongoing).

Even though the show didn't go in that direction, I think the canon leaves a lot of space to interpret Ava in that way. Her (gonna use she/they when talking about the canon) backstory especially.

As far as headcanons go, I think it's a no-brainer to say she takes time to reach the conclusion that she's not cis. She kind of had bigger things to worry about, after all. But after the dust settles and she's free to live her life with Bea, that's when things finally start to click. Maybe she meets someone at the bar who introduces her to the concept, or maybe it's a slow realization she comes to on her own. But either way, she approaches it with the same enthusiasm as everything else. Asks people to use neutral pronouns, Bea first, and then everyone else. Then comes the joy of experimentation, because if anyone is going to have a blast playing with their gender expression, it's Ava Silva.

The thought of cutting their hair short, properly short, is the first moment of hesitance. They have too many memories of the nuns carelessly snipping away with cold scissors, knowing they were doing a bad job but unable to stop them. So the thought of letting another stranger, even a professional, go that far takes a lot of courage. (Side note: I do subscribe to the headcanon that Beatrice cut Ava's hair in Switzerland. That kind of gentle care is the cornerstone of their relationship.) But with Beatrice's support, they manage it. Ultimately, they decide to grow it back out again, but the thrill of trying something new is too powerful to resist, even if the end result is unsatisfying.

There are countless little moments and decisions like this, some that work out great and others that don't, but Ava loves them all. She cherishes them like precious jewels, because she almost didn't have them. If Fate or God or dumb luck hadn't intervened in that morgue, she would have been denied the chance to grow and change like this. The road has been long and fucking painful, but she wouldn't trade it for anything.
