Do you have any papers/books/essays you recommend about sex work?

yes! my main rec is playing the whore: the work of sex work, by melissa gira grant. i also thought virginie despentes had some pretty interesting thoughts on sex work & labor in king kong theory, although i rec that book w a grain of salt--while i think the portion on sex work is pretty strong, many parts of the text suffer from an undercooked understanding of gender that falls back on bioessentialist assumptions (as in, despentes seems to want to challenge/deconstruct gender binaries but falls back a lot on sex binaries in the process). "cultural feminism: feminist capitalism and the anti-pornography movement" by alice echols is a good article examining & critiquing the way certain strains of feminism have talked about/treated porn + sex work, etc.

i also took a course on gender, empire, & imperialism this semester where we pulled a lot of readings from the routledge companion to sexuality and colonialism, ed. chelsea schields & dagmar herzog. the introduction touches on sex work & imperialism, as do various articles throughout the text. caroline sequin's article "white french women, colonial migration, and sexual labor between metropole and colony" was a really interesting piece on some of the roles sex workers played during colonization. there are also 2 articles i didn't read but both look to be specifically dealing w sex work based on the titles: "regulated prostitution in French-colonized northern Vietnam and its failures, 1920–1945" by christina firpo and "the league of nations and colonial prostitution" by liat kozma. we also read a really great article titled "the syphilitic arab? a search for civilization in disease etiology, native prostitution, and french colonial medicine" by ellen amster which explores how narratives of disease & contamination were a tool of colonization, looking specifically abt how these narratives became racialized--that piece focuses a good bit on sex work as well.

and then i also spent some time studying like. sex work in the late-19th century western u.s. as an undergrad, so if u want some texts related specifically to that topic lmk--it was so long ago now that i'm not sure if i'd actually rec any of the books i read anymore tho! the paper i ended up writing critiqued a lot of the history i was reading (which tended to fall into a dichotomy of portraying the sex workers it was speaking abt as either empowered or victimized, etc) so i had mixed feelings.

hello angie i hope this letter finds u well and my inquirie wont be too much trouble for u!

i recently finished jane austen's persuasion and it was a very lovely book. while i was aware of the central theme n tried to take note of the various instances of it perhaps to think of what they said at a later time, i realised i was not veyr sensitive about other aspects of the book. i rlly enjoyed reading the intro which wrote abt austens techniques and portrayals of various themes in the book such as the moral implications of persuasion (and of being persuaded) as well as the pov of the book being squarely within the protagonists senses + head (which creates a lot of intimacy n a unique situation + how characters are portrayed)

and i always find myself enjoying these insights be it articles about an up and coming poet's smart use of auditory imagery, rhyming or an intro about the problematic nature of Shakespeare's plays, but i always realise i never come to these realisations by myself!

the point is i find im not very sensitive or good at noticing details when it comes to literature... as a literature major yourself and prolific reader do u have any advice on how i can become more observant so i can form nuanced readings? (since i could find nothing on the internet)

Hello dear Lab ^_^ i am very berry flattered that you came to me with this question, and that you consider me a capable enough person to answer it! These few pieces of advice that I can offer you are a mix of what I learned in college and my personal experience reading and writing...☺️

My golden rule of reading: QUESTION EVERYTHING! I'm oddly enough the sort of person who naturally takes things at face value, so questioning the "sanctity" of the author's word wasn't always easy for me, but as I started writing myself and becoming aware of the literary devices and procedures that I use myself, I became more attentive of how authors bigger than myself do so too! When I say question everything, I really mean everything: the characters' words - I feel like people in fandom spaces forget way too often that fictional characters can lie, or obscure their true feelings, or simply be unaware of their true feelings up to a certain point. The setting of certain scenes - we had a very eye-opening lecture last year about how characters can be characterized by the environment around them, and while movies and plays are the first thing that come to mind when I say "characters' emotional states can be represented by the landscape and the room around them", it's something that I always pay attention to in literature as well. Forgive me for using my own work as an example, but I find it the easiest to explain like that - think of the beach house by the suicide cliff in BSCTTD! I tried very hard to make that house not only a house, but a representation of a certain defeated state of being. In works of literature better than my own, you'll find this even more often - if a good author points anything about a character or the room out, you should question why they chose to do so and what effect it has, what sort of a sensation that awoke in you! The same lines of dialogue can come off a thousand different ways based on the way the scene moves between them!!!! It's so interesting! The next thing you should question in the story is TIME! What order is the story told in, linear or nonlinear? If it's nonlinear, the order of the scenes is surely deliberate. If it's linear, that is surely deliberate too - perhaps because the crucial thing here is observing the character's growth or decay in real time? Does the author specifically slow time down at certain scenes, or keeps coming back to them? There are a thousand beautiful ways to manipulate time and perspective. Something that comes to mind is a scene from Madame Bovary where Emma suddenly experiences a scene of observing the landscape of the city from a carriage as though it's happening for the first time, even though it's something she's seen many times before, or on the other hand a scene from a Croatian novel called U Registraturi that repeats the scene of the character losing his virginity twice, once early on in the book in a sort of a flash-forward way, and then later on as it actually happens. Choices like these certainly not only make the story more dynamic, but also drive us to ask ourselves WHY!!!!!!! I'm sure there are a thousand answers a thousand people could offer, and that's the beauty of reading. NOW... Perhaps the most interesting thing to question is the problem of perspective! When I was young, I troubled myself a lot by asking "why did the author choose to make this character the POV character and not someone else? Why not the villain? Why not the girl? While everyone's perspective could surely bring something fresh to the story, or even weave an entirely new story, the choice of POV characters is always very deliberate. I like to ask myself, why them? What would change if it were not them? If I saw them from an outside perspective? Am I empathizing with them? Why, or why not? How close is the narration to the character themselves? There's so much to think about, everywhere, all the time!!!!!!!!!

I'll try to summarize the key points to think about while reading:

- Characters (their traits, the ones that are specifically said about them, the ones that are only implied, and how they contradict each others. Their name, living space, possessions... The relationships between characters and how they parallel each other)

- Time (already elaborated above)

- The Narrator (Are the narrator and the POV character the same, or is the narrator a separate entity? How much does the narrator "butt in" with their own opinions? Are they reliable?

- Perspective (elaborated above)

- The historical context (I'm not saying you have to do exhaustive research every time you read an older book, but since I had a subject about literary history where we very pedantically went through every stylistic period, I find it really interesting to do some reading about what conventions were popular at the time when a work was written, how it fits into them or does not fit! It also helps a lot with learning how to read more critically!)

You also mentioned poetry, and I just realized all my advice is pretty specific to prose... I think when it comes to poetry, sound is god. It helps me to first read a poem, and then listen to it out loud (looking for a recording or reading it to myself if I can't find one) and trying to figure out how the sound and the images complement each other! Poets are usually seeking the right sound rather than the right visual scene, but it's a snake eating its own tail. I feel like the shorter the poem is, the more difficult it is to read with understanding, so I truly admire people who can write good short poems...

HELLO YES I LOVE TALKING ABT THIS

So once upon a time I spent weeks on end on naturallycurly.com reading about wavy hair care specifically. I had just moved to Colorado six months before and my hair was Not loving the climate shift - the higher altitude results in dryer air and my hair was unmanageable and gross 100% of the time and I was sick of it. This article in particular was unbelievably helpful and it formed the basis of my research.

Here’s my before (spring 2019) and after (spring 2020):

(I have not really been styling my hair and/or taking selfies since then because. Pandemic. Not much point in going to that much effort just to work from home lol)

Below the cut are more specific tips for washing/styling, featuring linked articles, tutorials, and products. I do want to acknowledge that these are adapted from the methods Black women have been using to care for their (type 4) hair for generations - the methods largely work for 2&3 hair types too, but with some modifications (e.g., white people don’t generally need to add extra oil to moisturize their hair between washes). If you’re going to buy products, buy from Black-owned companies whenever possible! Ecoslay and Inahsi are two of my favorites.

Some general tips:

Know the general state of your hair. Is it dense or thin? Are the strands coarse or fine? Is it damaged from color and/or heat? If it’s dense and/or coarse, you’ll want heavier products to penetrate the strands (like gels). If it’s thin and/or fine, you’ll want lighter products to not weigh them down (like mousses). If it’s damaged, you’ll want heavy stuff with a lot of protein to get it healthy.

Protein and moisture are key to balancing your hair. Protein deficiency/excess moisture results in hair that’s too soft and doesn’t hold a curl, while moisture deficiency/excess protein is when your hair feels crunchy without anything in it. Odds are if you’ve been using sulfate-heavy products you’ll need a heavy dose of both. My hair was so protein-starved that I had to do two gelatin treatments to build it back up but I haven’t had to do anything like that since

Ingredients: cut out sulfates and silicones. Sulfates dry out your hair and silicones coat the strands and weigh it down. Ingredient labels are your friends - sulfates are pretty easy to spot (e.g., sodium laureth sulfate) and silicones usually end in ‘cone’ (e.g., dimethicone). Some people also avoid heavy oils and butters (e.g., shea butter) but it really depends on how thick your hair is and how tight your curls are. I generally avoid them because they weigh down my looser curls but others with tighter curl patterns find them moisturizing and helpful. When in doubt, plug the ingredient list into Curlsbot to see what's curl friendly and what's not.

You do not need fancy products. I've linked some of my faves in here but there's plenty of inexpensive stuff available at drug stores. @coffeecurlygirl on Instagram has some highlights where she's reviewed curl-friendly drug store products. I am also American, so product availability may be different in other places. Curl Maven (based in Ireland) is a treasure trove of product information for Europe, as well as an excellent source for curly hair care in general.

Washing:

The most important part of washing your hair and scalp isn’t the cleanser, it’s the friction. Some people find success with cowashing, which is when you use a conditioner to wash your hair. This moisturizes your scalp and prevents your hair from drying out with the cleansing agents. Others like having something more cleansing and use a sulfate-free shampoo (usually containing something like sodium olefin 14-16 sulfonate). I tend to switch cleansers whenever I wash - I like the As I Am Dry and Itchy Scalp cowash, Trader Joe’s Tea Tree Tingle shampoo, and a medicated shampoo & conditioner 2 in 1 deal. (My scalp is dry 100% of the time, it’s a struggle.) I also recommend getting a shampoo brush to really scrub it in there.

Conditioning is probably the most important step in your routine. Again, knowing your hair is really important here! Conditioners come in a huge range of heaviness. I have relatively thick hair and I like heavy conditioners. You want one that you can apply to your hair and practically feel it detangle itself. I like Giovanni conditioners best - the Deeper Moisture and Tea Tree Triple Treat are both good. You want to avoid your scalp because that’s where buildup happens, so apply to the length of your hair and squish it in (tutorial) from the bottom to form your curl clumps and ensure it penetrates each strand.

Clarifying is also something you want to do every so often. You’ll end up with some buildup on your hair no matter what so this is when you need an actual cleanser to break it down. You can get clarifying shampoos (Bumble & Bumble has one but I’ve never used it) but honestly you just need a normal sulfate shampoo. I use Suave Daily Clarifying (do not use it daily) which is like a dollar and will last forever.

After clarifying you should deep condition to restore moisture to your hair. My favorite these days is Jessicurl, but when I first started out this whole thing I needed something super protein-heavy so I used Curl Junkie’s Repair Me. In the middle of the road is something like Inahsi which is relatively balanced between moisture and protein. It all depends on what your hair needs. Apply after washing, let it sit on your hair for 30-45 minutes (use a shower cap and ideally a heat cap for max effectiveness). Rinse and style as usual.

Don’t use a normal towel to dry your hair. Terrycloth is a one-way ticket to Frizz City. You can buy microfiber towels made specifically for hair but you can also just use a tshirt. Also don’t rub your hair when you dry it, instead squeeze the water out from the bottom to preserve your curl pattern and prevent frizz.

You probably don’t have to wash your hair as often as you think. I wash my hair once or twice a week and it gets the job done. It takes much longer for curly hair to get gross and oily than for straight hair - my sister’s hair is stick straight and she has to wash every day.

Styling:

The products you use are much less important than the technique. Youtube is super helpful for demonstrations of how to apply products - reallife+curlygirl has my favorite channel for this.

Leave in conditioner is a must. I recommend finding something that’s intended to be a leave in, but some people just leave in some of the conditioner they used in the shower. Same deal, apply only to your ends, not the scalp.

After the leave in, here’s where the fun begins! Apply your styling products when your hair is soaking wet (like, immediately after your shower). I like to use a curl enhancer (eg Ecoslay’s Orange Marmalade or Uncle Funky’s Curl Magic) and then a gel over top (pretty much any drug store brand works - Aussie, LA Looks, etc.). Squish it in like you did your conditioner and use a lot of water. I legit have a mixing bowl that I keep in my shower and fill partway with water when applying so I can scoop in more water as needed. Squish until you can’t really feel the product anymore and then you’re good.

Plop your hair to set the curls (tutorial). Let it sit for 15-20 minutes. If you’re feeling extra you can add more gel once you take it down.

Diffuse dry (tutorial). DO NOT use a hair dryer without a diffuser, the direct heat is too intense and won’t give you good results.

Your hair will probably be a little crunchy after you’re done. Wait however long you want/can (at least until your hair has cooled down and it’s 100% dry) and then scrunch it out. No ramen noodle hair and your curls have set!

This can all be super overwhelming but is super worth it. You can see how much it's benefited my hair and I have no regrets. Most of these tips are things that have specifically worked for me, but if you want a more general (and better explained) quick-start guide for curl care, Curl Maven is a fantastic resource. There are a zillion places on the internet to get information, but I strongly recommend just sticking to a few: Naturally Curly, reallife+curlygirl, and Curl Maven are the best I've found and seem to cover the most ground. There's also a thriving Instagram community but proceed with caution - big Mormon mom energy over there, for whatever reason.

Finally, while the curls are great, the biggest change I’ve seen has been in the overall health of my hair. Washing less means my hair doesn’t get dried out as quickly, and even when I don’t style my hair (leave-in only and air dry) my hair still has some volume which is nuts. You don’t have to do all the styling every time you wash to get the benefits.

little mermaid: okay at first i was like yue is the mermaid b/c suki is a non-bender BUT if you think about kyoshi island's isolationist policy, that can totally translate to king triton's 'we-don't-go-above-the-surface' thing. ik ariel is the youngest of her siblings, but what if suki were the oldest of the mer-sibs and was therefore their default leader? then her kyoshi warriors literally become her sisters and the stakes re: suki's interest in the surface are intensified: not only is she disobeying her people's no-surface-interaction policy, but she's also betraying/abandoning one of the very things that she loves and that goes a long way in defining her and her personhood (mermaidhood?). idk who would be funniest as ursula but however it goes i think it'd be hilarious if ursula wasn't a vengeful villain, but just a batty queer witch who likes to help other people fuck around a find out. is ursla aunt wu? is ursula june? is ursula actually encapsulated by two people, e.g. sokka and zuko (little did suki know, zuko used to be human but sokka helped him become a merperson so they could be gay and mischievous in an underwater cave with two pet eels forever)? and and and maybe, when suki saves yue's life, it's not just a storm at sea — yue's kingdom is at war, and yue snuck off in men's clothing to help fight the fight. when suki first begs ursula to give her legs, it's just so she can check that yue's all right — she's been having nightmares about yue dying and her inky black hair suddenly turning white, and suki's haunted by the scene for reasons unknown. suki's voice isn't taken as a trade for legs but as an oopsy b/c ursula is young and still mastering her magic. suki finds that yue's hair hasn't turned yet but that can be some dramatic fantastical plot point later. the og little mermaid by mickey doesn't give a whole lot by way of duty/sacrifice/filial piety but finding a way to reshape the little mermaid to fit those themes, which are so central to yue and suki, could be a really fun challenge!

re: the half of it — i have seen it, but i rly didn't vibe with it thematically/structurally, mostly for the reasons pointed out in this article. it's a short but worthwhile read — just a heads up that it discusses rape culture/racial trauma/racialized and sexualized violence against asian womxn

If a ship between a man and a woman where only one of them is bi/pan/queer is not called a straight ship, what are they called? Are they called a queer ship? I understand a bi man and bi woman dating aren’t the same as a cishet man and cishet woman, cause unlike them they experience discrimination and biphobia and homophobia too, but a bi man and a straight woman? first of all to answer your question about tiff and max; as far as we know both of them are straight and are only attracted to members of the opposite gender which means that they're a straight couple. however, they're not a cishet couple as the term cishet takes both sexuality and gender identity into account and max is trans and not cis gendered so as you rightfully pointed out their relationship is not the same as the relationship of two cis gendered people. (also the term queer does include trans people/ gender identities but im not sure if it's that commonly used? as im cis gendered myself i really don't want to speak over trans people here so everyone feel free to add on to this post and/or correct me)

about m/f couples where one or both partners are bisexual to be completely honest until you sent this ask i had never even checked if there's a term other than either calling those relationships 'gay' or 'straight' relationships so i just did and you could actually just call it a 'mixed-orientation relationship' tho (obviously lol) i've never used that term myself. i guess the reason why i find it way more problematic to call these relationships 'striaght' relationships is because it a) plays into the false belief that bisexual people pick a side when they get into a relationship and are either gay or straight depending on whom they are in a relationship with and it just erases their identity and b) indicates that oppression for bisexual people starts and ends with a relationship. it's obviously super stupid to assume that being in a m/f relationship means that bisexual individuals are suddenly not opressed anymore and don't face biphobia and/or homophobia anymore. I would really recommend reading this article on The Myth of Bisexual (and Straight-Passing") Privilege if you want to read more about this topic.

especially when we're talking about fictional couples i don't think that when we call a f/m relationship where one or two ppl are bisexual or mga queer that it takes much time to just explain that we're not talking abt a mlm or wlw relationship but that it doesn't make the representation any less good. if we're taking skamverse couples for an example the first one i can think of is alexia/arthur where alexia's identity as a bisexual women definitely wasn't suddenly erased just because she was in a relationship with a man and it even was part of their conversations so as a bi women i still felt very much represented by alexia, positively as well as her struggles when for instance in s3 her boyfriend (forgot his name lol) asked her if she was up for a threesome or when Arthur outed her without her consent to his parents in s5. (apart from that i absolutely hated how alexia was treated in both of her relationships and definitely don't wanna praise these writers for shit- they very clear hated her).

hey. share your Thoughts on the cutesy and unassuming line youve referred to it during our Trans Scott Discussions but never elaborated

i actually have gone semi in-depth abt it here but it was in the middle of the night and more about trying to help a dude w the ~abstract nature of gender~ so nobody except the question asker really saw it BUT ID LOVE TO TALK ABOUT IT AGAIN WITH MORE CLARITY. big paragraphs under the read!

okay like. firstly you have to look at scott as an archetype and what exactly he was written to be before you can get into top ten transed gender moments. i mentioned in the previous explanation how the scott pilgrim character was written by o’malley as an expression of “[his] fantasy of being a cute white indie rock boy (which, as an ostracized mixed-race weirdo, was something I occasionally wished for when I was younger).” (the article in question is more about race and the way he’s making sure he doesn’t accidentally make all his characters white out of racial ambiguity like he did w spvtw and i really recommend reading it)

So once you address the way that scott pilgrim is, essentially, partly a self-projection power fantasy, you can see where it comes through. Best fighter in the province, gets all the girls, cool band, doesnt work a job, etc etc etc. this, however (im tapping my screen with a pencil) this doesnt line up with the rest of the story. The way that traditionally male protagonists would deal with arcs is completely different from how scott deals with his character arc. Like, the closure of his break-up with Envy and realizing he was in the wrong rather than them getting together/her slobbering all over him; he doesn’t end up with knives at the end thank GOD and in fact, she moves on from him (and this is why we kill edgar wright - for wanting them to be together :vomit:); he has to take ramonas feelings into account to even attempt to mend their broken relationship - he has to move on from being an asshole, which for most male protagonists, goes hand in hand with power fantasy.

That alone is amazing and #smashgenderroles and all that, but once you carve further into the details like you and i have bc we’re obsessed with meta, its not just within the arc itself where hes positioned as non-traditionally masculine. Its also the way he is with his loved ones, whether friends or romantic interests.

Him being his best self is entirely due to this softness that he has. Scott’s relationship with knives, positioned in the first book as creepy but something to be semi-appreciative of, is bad and reads very. Cis to me. Idk how else to describe it, but thats how it is. The same goes for some of his time with Lisa, Envy (USE HER CHOSEN NAME YOURE TRANS YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS *SHAKES HIM*), and Kim throughout the course of the books. Spoiler alert, its when he’s being an asshole and ignoring ppls feelings and ignoring his own past mistakes.

Scott, as he is who he is, despite being a skilled fighter, is, well. Somewhat pathetic. Or, well, i guess a better way to say it is that he inspires a sense of protectiveness in people? Despite being pretty self-reliant (at least in the fighting sense) and being a dick (at least in the all the time sense), his friends love and care for him, attempting to help him when he massively depressed, or when hes fighting the exes.

Even ramona feels this! Here is where we get the first addressing of scott “cutesy and unassuming” pilgrim. Throughout the books, hes constantly juxtaposed against his female counterparts, arguably to a degree more than his male counterparts. Wallace, Stephen Stills, and Niel are his only male friends, with the rest of the dudes being very very very secondary characters or exes, and they usually serve to sometimes goad him, sometimes help him (mostly wallace), sometimes just be his casual friends. On the other hand, all of the female characters, unless theyre very very very secondary (like julies friends), impact his actual character VERY deeply. This in turn calls to mind the time in v5 when scott said all his high school friends were girls and ramona remarks that shes unsurprised he was “raised by teenage girls” as hes “such a sensitive boy.”

Like, the dudes are just dudes hes friends with. Wallace is really the only one that fosters any visible emotional growth in him, but even so, despite living with him, basically being his best friend, and helping him out with the fight training, a lot of the growth that wallace pushes him towards is incidental, and more due to the women in the story.

Theres something kinda eh when you acknowledge that literally every single female character except for julie&co was/is into him, but at the same time, it is pretty interesting when you realize that all of scott’s emotional growth, while not manic pixie dream girl-ed by them, was at least pushed towards him due to his interactions with women. And THATS TRANSGENDERISM. 

I mean. Im not a girl. But because of my agab, i feel MUCH more comfortable with having girl friends rather than guy friends, and im sure thats not a rare phenomenon in transmasc ppl. the fact that scott has a cutesy/unassuming demeanour to him, especially when you consider that this statement is coming from his girlfriend, the frequent references to him being soft and “raised by girls” and, as said by envy in a flashback, “the girl of the relationship,” it all points to the conclusion of him being very non-traditionally masculine at the very least, and definitively trans at the most. 

Anyways.. I dunno if that makes ANY sense but writing this just made me have several very nice relizations about how to read the story in a new light. Tl;dr: scotts trans and i proved it youre welcome everybody

sybill was born in the seaside town of port isaac in 1972, the product of an affair between her pure blood mommy ( cressida trelawney ) and a muggle daddy ( edwin teague ). 

cressida knew abt edwin’s muggle wife. edwin’s muggle wife ( and his daughter eugenia, sybill’s half sibling ) did NOT know about his witchy gf. what happens in btwn the lines of the wizarding world stays within the lines of the wizarding world, ig.

sybill’s dad died p suddenly when she was six, and he didn’t leave anything to either her or her mum, cause... men ain’t shit ! learn it. anyway, sybill’s mum begged her slightly estranged family for like, something, and prob would have got NOTHING if she hadn’t said ‘hey, my daughter is totally the next cassandra ( and also DEFINITELY a pureblood )-’

this changed things a bit, even tho at the time... sybill had not shown any actual prophetic talent, lmao. she was a six yr old playing like, dolls, and trying to bring fishies home from the seashore in glass bottles, u know? 

the fam took them back under their wings, and sybill was told to keep her little mouth shut ( in like, a kind of nice way ) about both the fact she was a halfblood ( she prob didn’t conceptualize this one very well at six ) and the fact she was not a seer. she also prob didn’t conceptualize this very well. but playing pretend is something kids LIKE to do, so when cressida told sybill to say some mysterious things and play this role, she took to it immediately ! it was fun ! 

it stopped being fun PRETTY quickly, but as sybill got older and understood things a bit more, she clued in to the fact that her grandparents and extended trelawney family were quite... uh, to put it mildly, strict. her mum had gone out into the world on her own because she didn’t fit in the box that the trelawney’s had expected her to ( like a lot of pureblood fams ), and sybill was a lot more like cressida than she was the rest of her fam, and she was also, like. way more attached to her than she was them, so while it stopped being a fun game, she still kept to it for her mummy.

got her hogwarts letter. headed off. breathed an actual sigh of RELIEF when she was on the train, cause... she didn’t have to pretend to be something she was pretty sure she wasn’t anymore, and at hogwarts, she wouldn’t have to go through the ‘training’ and ‘lessons’ for her future as a famed seer that her fam were prepping her for. she got sorted into ravenclaw, which tracked ( most of the fam were ), and she just... went abt her life.

i know this is gonna sound wild. but at hogwarts, sybill was... exceedingly ordinary. she was a well behaved young lady who was assumed to be of quality breeding, and though her grandparents spoke highly of their little seer granddaughter to their friends, the kids and grandkids of those people didn’t really ... know much about this. sybill flew pretty far under the radar, and that was how she liked it. she graduated with top marks, turned of age, and started working for her grandparents on a full time basis in the little fortune teller shop they had at this point in time at the divide between knockturn alley and diagon alley - she’d already spent summers with them, so it was just one more step. still, no discernible seer talent.

very appropriately, it all started with death omens. sybill had always faked what she was seeing cause she sort of had to, so she’d always made the future sound pretty bleak - but there’s bleak and then there’s seeing grims wherever she went. a month later, her grandmother ( a woman who sybill could never decide was either a talented seer in her own right or a talented liar also ) was dead. it was sudden, and things seemed to escalate exponentially from here. within a year, her grandfather, an aunt and her own mother had passed on ; and sybill had started to notice. changes.

kinda hard not to notice the fact she was beginning to go to sleep in a very warm and cosy bed and wake up barefoot and naked in the middle of the creek at the bottom of the garden, arms raised to the sky, images seered to the back of her eyelids. sybill consulted dozens of healers. she was given dozens of different potions to aid her sleeping, she was told that she had been through a lot of loss in a short amount of time, it was natural to begin having sleeping issues and the images she saw were only NIGHTMARES, or dreams, or the echo of something normal from her subconscious. the potions didn’t work tho ! the spells, the advice, the grief counselling they sent her to... over the next while, sybill’s life really began to unravel, and she couldn’t understand it, so she definitely couldn’t explain it. 

throw everything together and mix some severe money issues in as sybill was never very good at actually running the store and was now dealing with a whole lot of confusing shit - she loses the shop, then the house, and this is what eventually brought her to albus dumbledore, where - haha ! - she made her first ever actual prophecy. fun ! sucks she doesn’t rmbr it <3 

sybill got the job based on that, but figured it was cause he liked her a lot ( he didn’t ). life straightens out somewhat, she moves into hogwarts ( did eventually buy a cottage in hogsmeade since she got married and w/e, but is back living in hogwarts now they’re divorced ), she terrifies students for many years over, blah blah blah. makes a second prophecy to harry potter ( doesn’t rmbr that one either ), fights in the battle of the astronomy tower, fights in the battle of hogwarts, yada yada yada.

things to do in quarantine!

i hadn’t seen a list like this yet and i thought that was kind of odd. we’re all stuck inside the house for who knows how long, which means (as my girlfriend is stressing) we are all going to have to get some fucking hobbies. this list is a bit long so:

-friendship bracelets! embroidery thread works best (i have a lot left over from my brief embroidery stint when i was younger) but i think you could do it with other kinds of string! you can find a lot of patterns here, and they’re all free! my favorites are 1, 2, and 3

-amigurumi, which is making stuffed animals out of crocheting. this doesn’t work great if you don’t have any crochet hooks, but if you’re living with your parents or with any crafty friend, they’re likely to have some. this website has a ton of patterns (i’ve linked the free ones, but they have even more for ~4/5 dollars). personally, i’m really excited abt this plant.

-itch.io games. itch.io has TONS of free games, as long as you have a computer that can handle like, stardew valley, you’ll be able to find something that works. my favorites are butterfly soup, the bird museum, and cheeky chooks, but just browsing through any tag will give you so many things to play. also, if you’re not up for downloading stuff, not only does itch.io have browser games, but you can always come back to coolmathgames.com

-draw some stuff!! on paper with a pencil (a novel idea, i know). here are some idea generators! alternatively, on your computer/tablet. pixilart is a free to use, online pixel art tool, and aseprite is a downloadable tool. aseprite is the best out there, but it’s $15 if you can’t compile it yourself. finally, krtita is an open source alternative to photoshop that works pretty well, imho.

-make a game. i know you can do it. a lot of these game makers aren’t super difficult to use, but require you to sink a few hours into them to figure out what’s going on. perfect for quarentine! whether you’re making a visual novel, a text adventure, a retro gameboy ROM, or just a quiz, it’s a way to kill time and there’s nothing more satisfying than Making Something. 

-start working out- i know it’s intimidating, but you don’t know how much exercise you get just by walking around until you are stagnant in your bed all day. here’s an illustrated guide for workouts designed for transmasc people (i use this!), and here’s an article about working out without equipment. please try to do something. you will feel so much less greasy, even if all you do is stretch and walk around a bit before showering. 

-bake some things! bread is yummy and a classic but unless you’re used to it, it probably won’t work out how you want it to. that doesn’t stop me from trying tho! kneading and mixing are both good ways to get your stress out. i’ve been compulsively making snickerdoodles, too. @butchhousewife has almost a whole blog full of vegetarian recipes that you can browse through.

-waste your time with phone games, too. games aren’t limited to computers and consoles! i bet you thought phone games were just mindless things you did to kill time. well, you thought RIGHT but ALSO WRONG. my favorites are adorable home, seabeard, good pizza great pizza, and dadish. also, download an nds (i use this one. i think it’s like $7 but you can play ace attorney and animal crossing. think of how much those would cost normally) and a gameboy emulator while you’re at it and nab some ROMS. remember, it’s not piracy because these games aren’t available anymore and also fuck capitalism. 

-write fanfiction. idc if you write all the time of if it’s been years or if you’re a “shit writer” i literally Do Not Care. find something a concept you love (50s diners. sitting on roofs and stargazing. lazy mornings with a girl you love.) and write abt the characters you love. post it on AO3 because lets be honest, wattpad is a biiit trash. 

-the useless web. 

-try to stay connected with your friends! this might seem dumb but believe me, we’re social creatures. these next few weeks without any touch are going to SUCK. do what it takes. snap them. facetime. even just a good morning text. maybe get more creative! watch movies together with kast (the rabbit replacement? idk tell me how it works) and videos with rave, play some co-op stardew valley, or new horizons when it comes out. without is an app for long-distance couples, but now ALL couples are long-distance because you can’t leave your house! also whatever the fuck touchroom is. it seems cute. 

-practice all that self-care you never had the time for. clean your room (@unfuckyourhabitat has some tips here). take a bath (or, if you don’t have a bath, sit on the floor of your shower and pretend you are anywhere else). masturbate. online underwear window shop (meundies, adoreme, and aeire are some of my favs) just for the excuse to look at happy women in fancy bras. make yourself some kind of meal and drink water. sit naked in front of a mirror and compliment what you see (or work up to that! you’ve got time).  remember that these weeks will be hard. do your best.

-read!. if you’ve got a stockpile of books-i-need-to-read GREAT. read them. otherwise, read this lesbian erotica that is inexplicably also a cosmopolitan article, or this article about lesbians and also hands. or ebooks on any of these free book websites. or fanfiction (again, linking ao3 because wattpad embodies all the worst parts of my life). if audio is more your thing, this is an article with links to free audiobooks. or try podcasts! i’m a huge proponent of the gay ones. try wtnv, the penumbra podcast, the magnus archives, and wolf 359.

-bonus! likely you will have things you need to do while quarentined, whether it’s homework, things for work, or just brushing your teeth and showering. habitica is a free productivity game that rewards you for finishing those tasks! it’s super cute and it works.

this is a hairy one. to my knowledge people chose partners who look familiar, so they’ll look for people who sorta look like the community they grew up with, so people who didn’t grow up in a mixed community will have a rather narrow dating pool, their own “race” or ethnicity usually (also explains while I’ve always ended up with or only had crushes on other slavs so far :I ). oh and ofc this doesn’t only apply to looks but also to culture, religion (or lack thereof), traditions etc. bc you’re more likely to relate and have stuff in common with each other if you have similiar experiences.© goes out to some other radfem I can’t remember the url of where I read about this sorta race discourse for the first time ^^” at least the culture part bc I’m a superficial pos (ofc I’ve read abt attraction before and not only on tumblr!)I think that’s ok bc trying to force people into dating someone is really fucking creepy no matter if you reasoning is “progressiveness” or whatever. also most countrys don’t experience much migration and don’t have a very mixed population so it doesn’t have that much of an impact on peoples’ dating options anyway, unless you live in the us or central europe I guess. but even in countrys with huge mixed population people tend to form microcommunitys, based on their similiarities and not mingling much.

so tldr: I don’t think that “race” preference is inherently racist due to what I know how attraction forms BUT I think people who are not attracted to other races, ethnicities etc. often justify that with racist bullshit.

8. How do you feel about the fat acceptance movement (the body positivity movement)? Why do you think it’s mostly women in that movement?

generally ok, I think people should not be bullied for how they look and I think doctors should be more attentive to their fat patients and not brush all of their symtpoms off as “well you’re just too fat”. I personally know people who suffered a great deal because of that negligence. for example a friend of my mom’s had an uterus infection (I think it was?) and it made her belly swell, her doctor thought she had just gotten fat so the infection got unnoticed for a long time before she got extremely ill and she had to have a hysterectomy to survive.

and I think it’s mostly women bc we’re socialised to show or rather perform (not necessarily feel…) in more empathetic ways. also we try really really hard to heal the world through individualistic self help stuff, because we tend to internalize problems. also obviously we face more harassment for our looks than men do, so we have more interest in making it stop.

some fat positive individuals are a tad weird and claim that you can still be mobile and healthy even if you’re morbidly obese which is wrong, but you get weird positivity nuts who are taking it too far in every movement I guess. I still think even very obese people shouldn’t be bullied, even if you claim you’re just “concerned for their health” bc that’s a blatan lie. Also bullying has enver helped anyone get better.

12. How do you feel about religions? Can a radical feminist be religious? Do you think all religions are equally bad (for women)?

my knowledge is mostly limited to abrahamic religions and yeah i think they’re bad. their very foundation is based on the reversal of creation and the worship of the father, both a punishing almighty ghost in the sky and an allmighty tyrant at home. and they invented all sort of rules to cement womens’ role as subhuman, worthles servant to men.

I don’t think abrahamic religious women can be feminists, at least not if they properly practice their religion, misogyny, homophobia, xenophobia and all. if they just pick and choose the “good” stuff and are interpreting bible verses in different ways than literally every other person practicing the same religion, I don’t think that has anything to do with said religion anymore and they’re just making up their own one at this point

I get it that religious communitys can be a massive support system, especially when they’re on of these more pick&chose kinda communitys, and I would never judge a woman for seeking support and belonging among welcoming, generally nice people who don’t really have much to do with conservative christians. but it’s still sorta sketchy that she and her friends would follow a belief system that is misogynist at its core :/

also churches sometimes help feminists, I think a church or at least a pastor (uuugh it’s been a while since I read that article, sorry) is helping sisters ev, a german foundation campaigning for the nordic model and helping women in prostitution. he seems to be helping out of the goodness of his heart and not because he is judging these women negatively. but I’m generally sceptic towards patriarchal religions and their followers bc of their misogynist foundations.

I don’t know enough abt other religions to have a propper opinion on them, I’m generally neither a religious nor spiritual person (was raised catholic tho) so not really interested in that stuff, but I think rituals like this witchy stuff and singing together etc. can be a nice bonding experience. I enjoyed it whenever I tried to engage in it with other radfems. the togetherness is just… well nice. people just like doing rituals and doing stuff together. .

so yeah I don’t think religion or spritiuality is necessarily bad, the rituals and sense of support, community and belonging is obviously good. It only becomes bad when it clashes with human rights, medicine and science, which christianity, islam and judaism do.

and I don’t think liberal religious people (the pick and choose ones) are “true” believers bc they don’t fully adhere to their religion anyway. but I think they are massive enablers for more orthodox believers, also even liberal followers are usually extremely protective of their religion (and therefore the more conservative parts/people) even if they don’t really practice it anyway which often leads to conflict with people who are critical of their institution

😭 CRYING - what makes them cry? do they cry easily?

They cry rarely. Partly because Dana has a "bad connection" with their feelings as in...they simply don't understand how they feel most of the time and doesn't deal with them early enough. That then leads to piled up emotions which is...not healthy, to be honest. They also prefer to do it in private, because they have an unhealthy mindset about not showing weakness. They also claim that they rarely cry bc it would ruin their eyeliner they had carefully drawn (they suck at makeup ngl)

Usually the reason why they cry is their job. Being (half unwillingly) chosen as the general of a new defence force squad already sounds like a hard job, and along with that come the awful bosses who don't really care about losses (bc most of the squad members are robots created exactly for this task) nor ethics, and who also love to push poor Dana to their limits (and over). It ain't easy, but it's worth it (a lie).

The second reason are the bottled-up emotions they're bad at taking care of. But usually it's both of these mixed together. There are other reasons too, but those are the most important ones.

Once resurrected in a robot body, she actually jokes about one of the best things of it is that crying is not an available function in this body. Bold of her to assume that makes her life better somehow.

🎂 BIRTHDAY CAKE - when is their birthday? do they like celebrating it?

I already mentioned it in the first one but...the vulnerable side (tm). Dana wants to be known for their achievements, their personality, they've done to help the world or what ideas do they have. And they're scared that acting like a normal person with bad days will stop people from seeing what they've done, and instead they will only be known for breakdowns and feeling bad over something. Good thing is that they Do Get Better at seeing vulnerability as a good thing and get a healthier life style (it only lasts a little but hey, it's still something ;) )

⚾ BASEBALL - can they play sports? what is their best position if they play a team sport? what's their strong suit (speed, power etc.)?

Dana likes playing badminton. She and Amal often played together as a way to procrastinate school/university tasks, and continued to play it once in a while in the working life, though more rarely than when they were studying.

She's also a bit into floorball, and always chooses to be a goalkeeper :3

OH AND Dana also does yoga sometimes bc their work would create them even more pain if they didn't do stretches. Though because of the work schedule they have, they usually do yoga sometime around 3AM 🥲

Their coffee cup. It was gifted to them by their parents, and Dana has used it ever since. It's beige and has pomegranates drawn on it.

Shut it's power source down so it stops. Throw rocks on the rails. Switch the rails to the one person part in case it won't work & run as fast as you can to untie them bc trams are Slow.

In childhood it would be something like:

"So many planets, people and things to do out there! I wish I could travel more often, just to feel like I'm somehow a part of this universe."

Meanwhile as an adult:

"From all the star systems and planets that exist, hell, even the ones that we can see, and all of the living beings that live there, it's kinda weird to be the person who has so much they could do to affect the future of this sector of the galaxy. She rarely star gazes in the literal way, because she simply doesn't have time to sit on a meadow and look at the sky. She does love looking out of the window of the spaceship just to see how beautiful space is.
