Though he was well-established in comics when he created Hellboy, the character seemed to crystallize Mike Mignola’s illustrative style in very interesting ways. Partially due to the subject matter, his compositions became dominated by swaths of opaque shadows while also becoming more formal, less figurative, and more expressionistic and geometric. It suited the stories perfectly. His style grew to infer much more, hinting at things hiding in the dark corners, and implying the forms of the fantastic. Charting that evolution from the first drawing of Hellboy in 1991 into the 21st century, through entire finished pages, rough sketches, pencilled panel grids, character designs, cover designs and more, this book is a delight for comic art fans.
