“𝒂𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒃𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒌𝒔”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Sofia brushed past Rafe as he opened the front door to their house, absentmindedly tossing her purse onto the couch as she stands in the middle of the living room with her hands perched akimbo and her countenance marred into an irritated scowl. She stood there, impatiently tapping her heeled foot against the floor as she watched Rafe close and lock the door behind them.
“Are you ready to talk now or do you want to act like a child for the rest of the night?” She inquired, abhorrence and annoyance lilts heavily in her voice, causing Rafe to rub a hand over his stubbed jaw.
He knows he’s the reason for her anger, specifically because of the way he acted tonight. His jealousy and petulant behavior towards one of Sofia’s coworkers and Rafe’s presumption that he’d been unabashedly flirting with her all night resulted into Rafe roughhousing him and causing a fracas in the middle of her law firm’s holiday party.
The entire scene caught the attention of the other attendees at the party and resulted into him being escorted out of the premises, leaving Sofia alone and embarrassed for the remainder of the night. Rafe too had been chagrined because of his actions and his unwarranted act of impulse that he had venomously unfurled onto her coworker.
It wasn’t smart and he knows that she would have to deal with the repercussions of the fallout Monday morning when she returns to work. He never had any intentions of acting out in the way that he did; but he allowed his emotions overpower him and it inevitably resulted into him doing something completely idiotic.
Sighing deeply in exasperation and massaging his temples that were throbbing excruciatingly in pain, Rafe shrugged his shoulder.
At his noncommittal response, Sofia scoffs wryly and shakes her head in disbelief, throwing her hands up warily in the air. “You’re unbelievable. If I hadn’t pulled you off of him you probably would’ve beaten him to a pulp!” She accosts in disbelief, still appalled and disappointed in her fiancé's behavior tonight.
She’s never seen him act so irate and violent like that before. She doesn’t know the source of where this all derived from, but what she does know is that she never wanted to see him act that way ever again.
Rafe’s jaw clenched incensedly in recoil. He ignored her chastising and berating words of anger as he walked into the kitchen, heading directly for the freezer. His hands clenched and unclenched in a fist as he flexed his fingers, trying to soften them out. He grabbed a handful of ice cubes and placed them against his knuckles, attempting to soothe them.
They were still throbbing in pain and were now a slight dark mauve color from where his hand roughly connected against the guy’s jaw.
He still sees the look of horror on Sofia’s face and hears her mortified gasp of “Rafe!” every time he closed his eyes.
“You embarrassed me, tonight. Don’t you see that?” She catechizes, her tone softening a bit as she stares at him with solemnity in her eyes. And that only further increases the immense guilt that he was already feeling.
“I know, Sof.” He sighs softly in defeat. “I didn’t mean to—”
Sofia cuts him off mid-sentence with a shake of her head. “No, you did mean to because you were acting sour all night.” She rebuttals in haste, recalling back on his behavior through the night that consisted of him making sly comments and blatantly displaying his disliking of Chase.
She had immediately caught onto his impertinent behavior and attitude and pulled him aside, forewarning him in caution to cease it all together as this was an important night for her.
He tried so hard to prevail through the traitorous thoughts of jealousy that were tormenting him. But every time he looked up, there Chase was practically conjoined at Sofia’s hip or standing too close to her and she was too oblivious or too indulged into a conversation to even notice.
It didn’t help that she had been wearing a beautiful all black gown that perfectly cupped and complimented her curvaceous figure. Her beauty was godlike, catching everyone’s attention the moment she entered the room.
Rafe was typically secure with himself and his relationship with Sofia. He’s gotten jealous on occasions but it’s never resulted into something like this before. He knows that it wasn’t fair for him to unfurl his anger over his conflicted feelings on someone else, but at that time in point he didn’t care.
He honestly did try to the best of his ability to refrain from overreacting, but all logical thoughts left him the moment he saw Sofia and Chase standing in the corner of the room giggling and conversing lowly amongst themselves. He acted on impulse and rage as he approached them, spewing vulgar obscenities and accusations at Chase, much to Sofia’s chagrin.
“Oh, so you did notice me tonight.” He mutters sarcastically under his breath, tossing the now, halfway melted ice cubes into the sink before walking out of the kitchen and ascending up the staircase towards the direction of their bedroom.
The abrupt comment causes Sofia to furrow a confused look. “And what the hell is that supposed to mean?!” She asked, trailing behind him in tow as she follows him into their bedroom. She folded her arms beneath her chest as she narrowed her eyes at him. She didn’t appreciate what he was insinuating at all.
Rafe chuckled humorlessly as he began to undress himself; loosening the knot in his tie. “Nothing, just forget it.” He attempted to dismiss, but Sofia persisted against it.
“No, tell me what you meant by that. Because if it’s what I think you’re trying to say then we have an issue here that’s deeper than all of this. You know how I feel about you.” She ripostes, taking a step closer to where he was currently standing. She looks into his eyes, her gaze unwavering. “So, for you to even suggest that tells me that you don’t trust me like I thought you did.”
Rafe turns away from the mirror and looks at her; his countenance marring something akin to hurt and despondency. “Well what the fuck am I supposed to think then, Sofia? These past few weeks you’ve barely been home, whenever you do come home it’s late at night-”
“Don’t do that. I’m a lawyer, Rafe! Of course I’m gonna have hectic work hours.” Sofia rebuttals in defense, her anger accruing minutely. Sofia was bewildered at how completely unreasonable and unfair he was acting right now.
“Sometimes, I have to stay late at the office whenever there’s a big case you know that! And you what? I worked my ass off to get that promotion, it’s not fair that you’re throwing it in my face like you’re trying to punish me for finally getting the job of my dreams,” Wetness burns the back of her eyes, blurring her vision.
Rafe nodded as he pursed his lips in a worn moue; his expression seemed forlorn—just as Sofia’s heart felt like. “You know what? If that’s what you think I’m doing and that that’s what tonight was all about then I don’t think there’s anything else that we need to talk about, Sofia.” He concedes wearily in defeat; informing her that he would be sleeping over at Barry’s tonight. He turns away from her, snagging his car keys off of the dresser before retreating out into the hallway down the stairs to the front door.
He feels like shit.
Arguing with Sofia left his heart aching in remorse. He didn’t intent on confronting her so abrasively like he did; but he couldn’t contain the feelings that had been festering inside of him for weeks. Rafe wasn’t necessarily jealous of Chase, he was justenvious of the time that Chase got to spend with Sofia that he has been deprived of recently.
He knows that there needs to be a conversation about everything regarding his feelings of jealousy and neglect, but he decides to save that talk for later when he knows he’ll actually be rational enough to do once his anger’s subsided.
He waits in the driveway, ruminating and contemplating on if he should go back inside. He only sits there for a brief moment before he turns the car on and pulls the car out of the driveway, making his way downtown past Barry’s house and towards the bar.
The loud music that plays through the speakers ricochet; reverberating in an echo against his eardrums. He sits alone at the bar, chugging down his fifth shot of the night.
His clouded pupils gander over the rim of his glass that he brings up to his parted lips, allowing the bitter liquid to chisel him into a haze. Rafe leers around the populous room, glancing at the inebriated club goers as they were either dancing provocatively against each other or engaging in jovial conversations.
He knows that he’s consuming way more alcohol than is needed and that he will have to deal with the unfortunate consequential effects of his drunken stupor afterwards. But, he momentarily disregards that caring, along with everything else as he picked up the glass and easily chugged the liquid down his throat with a recoiling wince. Wiping his mouth with the back of his hand, Rafe gestures a hand airily waving the bartender down.
The brunette; who was occupied wiping down the counter and cleaning up the remnants of trash that was loitered around, glanced up at him after realizing that he was vying for her attention. Sighing softly, she wipes her hands onto the fabric of the black loose fitted apron that was tied around her waist before making her way over to him.
“Yes?” She asks rhetorically, already well aware that he desired another shot of tequila. Though he wasn’t as drunk as some of the other attendees she could see that he was steadily approaching that precipice.
(He looked a mess; completely disheveled and unkempt. From the sullen looked that lingered in his eyes she could tell that he had a bad day and was trying to numb his pain by drowning it in alcohol.)
“I wan-‘nother one,” He mutters, the words messily slur together barely coming out as coherent.
Retrieving the shot glass from him, she moves it towards the mixing station out of his reach. “Do you have someone that can come pick you up?”
Rafe blinked at her, his face furrowed. “Just pour me ‘nother drink,” He reproaches dismissively at her concerned tone. He didn’t need or want any conversations—he just wanted to drink. The bartender rolls her eyes, completely nonplussed by his sudden hostility.
“Well, you’re not getting another one because you’re drunk. Too drunk to be making smart decisions right now,” She attested and Rafe has to resist the urge of scoffing at her proclamation.
“That’s the point. I don’t want to think. I’ve had a really shitty night, alright? I just want to forget. So pour me another shot.” It was easier said than done when his every thought revolved around Sofia.
(He knows that he can’t truly forget what happened but he can distract himself until he’s numb even if it’s just temporary.)
The bartender folds her arms beneath her chest as she heeds at him, staring in contemplation. “Okay,” She nods, pushing herself off of the counter. “But I’ll only do it if you give me your phone so I can call someone to pick you up after this.” She bargains, to which Rafe now audibly scoffed.
Too drunk and too annoyed to rebuttal further he concedes, reaching into his pocket to receive his phone. “Fine. Here!” The bartender smiles in triumph at her coaxing. She retrieves the phone from him after he unlocks it then turns around to fix him another drink.
As she scrolls through his call log, searching for an emergency contact it’s interrupted by a flashing notification. At the top of his screen she sees an incoming message. “Someone named Sarah texted you, how about I tell her to come get you?”
“Sarah?” Rafe dismays with a shuddering frown, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand before petulantly pushing the glass aside. “God, no.” He loved his sister dearly, but he undoubtedly knows that if she were to find out about his and Sofia’s argument, that she too would berate him for his behavior and frankly, Rafe wasn’t in the mood for his little sister’s nagging.
“Too late. I sent her the location. Sit tight until she comes.” The bartender says, with a shrug before extending his phone back to him. She bid Rafe a goodbye before trotting off to the other side of the bar to attend to other customers.
Great. Rafe reveries, warily running a hand over his face. He had come here tonight to seek a temporary resolve from his relationship issues, but the bartender’s conniving insistence had altered that plan—abruptly cutting his night of drinking and sulking short.
Miraculously, Rafe managed to stagger his way towards the bathroom.
He cleaned his sweat soddened face, splashing water onto it hoping that it would help him look not so disheveled. He dried his face clean with a paper towel then made his egress from the bathroom. Walking back to his perched seat at the bar counter, he halts his movement mid-gait when he sees Sarah looking around the room. Her search for him is brief because when she turns around and spots him, she gives him an indiscernible expression before approaching him.
“Don’t, alright?” Rafe murmurs, snatching his suit jacket off of the empty stool before reaching inside of his pockets to retrieve three wadded up $20 bills that he sits underneath his empty glass.
Sarah gives him a stern look, undaunted by his dismissive tone. “Oh, there’s going to be a conversation about all of this, you’re not getting out of it no matter what you say,”
He rolls his eyes, shrugging his arms through the sleeves of his jacket as he follows her out of the bar’s front door and outside to where her car’s parked.
“So, instead of talking to her about your feelings you decided to lash out on her coworker and punch him?” Sarah congresses in disbelief, tucking her legs beneath her body as she accompanied him on the couch.
“Why do you sound surprised? It sounds exactly like something he’d do,” John B, who’d eavesdropped on their conversation from the kitchen, asked, holding his hands up in defense when both Cameron siblings give him a pointed look. “I’m going to go give Valerie a bath,” He says, announcing his departure so they could finish their conversation.
Sarah sighs as she turns towards Rafe who sat there on the couch still sulking in his self deprecating misery. “I know, alright? I know that I should’ve talked to her. But it’s been hard to do that recently when she’s hardly ever home. And it’s not like I’m not proud of her, because I am, I just miss her.” He laments, feeling the heaviness of his heart swell.
“So go tell her that.” Sarah insisted, prompting him towards reconciliation.
He knows that she’s right.
Of course she’s right; Sarah had always been the voice of reason between the two of them. But with the things he said to Sofia tonight, he was worried that she didn’t want to see him again.
“What if she doesn’t want to see me?”
“She texted me after Barry told her that you weren’t at his place. Believe me, she wants to see you just as much as you want to see her. Come on, I’ll drive you home.”
Regardless of their argument, he knows that he shouldn’t have walked off in the way that he did. That’s not how they communicated and he didn’t want her to feel as if he was disregarding her feelings simply because he was hurt. Walking back into the house, he makes his way back up the staircase to their bedroom.
His remorse thickens when he sees her perched at the end of the bed with her hands buried in her hand. Stepping over the threshold, he saunters further into the room as he approaches her.
“Thought you were supposed to be sleeping at Barry’s,” Her voice is hoarse, like she’d been crying, and gauging from the way she’s avoiding his gaze, he could tell that his suspicions were confirmed.
Rafe exhaled a heavy sigh of exasperation as he leaned against the wall athwart from her. His hands slacked in the front of his pockets as his head lowered and his shoulder sagged solemnly. “I, uh went to the bar instead to clear my head. Sof, I—” He paused momentarily, almost as if he was apprehensive about revealing the truth of his feelings.
He eventually continues after a brief moment of contemplation because this conversation needed to happen. They couldn’t allow this unresolved tension to fester; his relationship with her meant too much for him to allow anything to interfere with it.
“Things are different between us, Sof. I mean you have to have noticed it too. We’re not connecting like we used to, you started being more distant, working late and I know that it’s only because of your new promotion at the firm and believe me, I’m so fucking proud of you but...”
His eyes finally look up to meet her gaze again. Her heart nearly plummets at the sight of his heartbroken expression. “I feel like you’re pulling away from me. I’m losing you. And you’re too busy to notice it. I feel like you’re moving forward and starting this new chapter in your life while I’m still stuck at the beginning trying to find where I fit in. I trust and love you with everything in me, Sofia, I do, but I can’t help but to feel jealous seeing the guy you’ve been spending most of your nights with, touch all over you and have you in the ways that I’ve been wanting to have you for these past few weeks,”
Rafe shrugs a shoulder half-heartedly as he shook his head. “I know I shouldn’t have done what I did tonight. I should’ve talked to you about how I’ve been feeling and I’m sorry for embarrassing you.” He lamented in regret and guilt.
Sofia sat there in silence as she quietly ruminated over everything that he’d just loquaciously confessed to her. She was unaware about Rafe’s insecurities of losing her and their relationship coming to an end—or that her hectic and inconsistent work schedule had played a contributing factor in this whole ordeal.
It was true: she has been working messy hours recently and hasn’t been as affectionate with him as she previously was. But that was only because she’s been tired from work not because her feelings for Rafe had changed. She was still adjusting to her new promotion and has been getting a plethora of new cases recently which has unfortunately caused her to miss out on a few dinners and had her coming home at later hours than usual. She never would’ve guessed that her new promotion would be a direct cause of her current relationship issues.
“I wish you would’ve come to me about this. You know that I love you more than anything. Chase is a friend and coworker that’s it. I’ve never looked at him in any other way and I don’t want to. Baby, I’m not going anywhere and you’re not losing me to anyone or anything. I’m here with you. You have to know that.”
Rafe nods somberly as he bites down on his bottom lip. “I know. I was just scared. You’re the single most important person in my life. I don’t know what I’d do if I ever lost you.”
Sofia clambers to her feet to approach him. His eyelashes flutter softly when she reaches up and cradles his face within her hands. She looks up into his eyes, directly, their gazes never wavering from one another’s.
“You won’t. I’m here. I’m right here.”
There’s so much that they still need to discuss, residual issues that were still unsettled and lingered between them that they needed to talk about but those issues are momentarily brushed aside along with everything else.
Everything except for the way Rafe’s eyes stared at hers with a smoldering warmth that made her feel overwhelmed with enamor.
Their breathing slows, transitioning into soft pants. She feels an avid shiver run down her spine, body aching in a wanton desire, goosebumps prickle her skin when she sees his lidded eyes hastily flicker down to her lips then slowly lift up to meet her gaze again.
It’s been weeks since she’s had the feeling of his body against his, or had the pleasure of feeling him nestled deeply inside of her.
“Sofia,” He whispered, his raspy, deep-baritone voice trembled a bit as her name fell off his lips in a litany.
She responds instantaneously, her body reflectively answers to his beckon as her face begins to move towards his. He meets her halfway, his large hand reaches up to cradle the side of her face as he tilts her face towards his.
His tongue traces along the outline of her bottom lip, begging for entrance. She quickly compiles as she widens her mouth open, allowing him to receive better access of her lips. His lungs burned in desperation, pleadingly wanting him to part for air but Sofia’s lips felt too good and perfect against his to retract. “I love you.” He says, the words easily falling off of his lips, his gaze looming a soft warmth as his eyes met hers.
“I love you, too.” She whispers softly, the weight of her words embedding the same heartfelt sincerity as his.
They kissed again, softly, tenderly as they begin to maneuver backwards towards the bed. Sofia scoots closer to him, their knees brushing lightly in her movement. She moved her hand that rested on his leg upward, raffishly moving it closer to his upper thigh.
Her small hand proceeded toward its salacious path until it reached its desired destination. She could feel the rigid outline of his hardened erection, curling stoutly against his thigh. He swallows thickly, inhaling a soft breath when she eased the zipper of his pants down.
Sofia pulled the zipper further down, still heeding tentatively at his reaction. He groans lowly, body avidly shuddering in a desperate need as she shimmies the slacks over his hips. He lifts his hips slightly off of the bed to assist her, pulling the pants down until they pooled around his ankles, absentmindedly kicking them aside afterwards.
Their hands worked in a tandem, undoing the buttons of his white long-sleeved dress shirt, popping each of the buttons open until she could see the sight of his fawn toned chest beneath the pallid fabric. He shrugged out of the shirt as it loosened around his arms and shoulders, tossing it somewhere along in the forgotten mix of his pants.
She bit at her lower lip as she appreciatively roved her eyes over his body; the taut muscles on his chest glistened under the warm hues of the moonlight that poured throughout the room, his physique was lean, not too strawny, not too bulk. His boxers snugged loosely around his hips, revealing the slight dip between the juncture of his lower abdomen and the beginning of his pelvic bone, where the wisps of his pubic hairs peeked over the elastic band.
His cheeks were colored with a pretty pink blush under the gauze of her smothering scrutiny. He looked deliciously irresistible.
Rafe gently pushed her shoulders so that she was falling backwards onto the plush mattress. He sat on his knees at the edge of the bed as he grabbed ahold of her ankle, smirking sheepishly at her as he unhooked the latch on the back of her heel in his feat of undressing her.
His hand glides up her bare thigh, hiking up the fabric of her dress so that it’s now pooling around her waist. The thin, laced material of her thong comes into his view as he parts her legs open. Her breath hitches and body shivers when he teased a finger against her clothed covered clit.
“Rafe,” She keened breathlessly, using that forewarning tone that he knew all too well.
He grunted, his deft fingers moving in a hurried haste as he began to rid tug the flimsy thong that covered her ass, over her curvaceous hips and down her legs. Sofia assists him, allowing the ruined pair of underwear to fall to the floor with a soft thud.
She pulled the dress over her head, that too absentmindedly found its way on some surface of their bedroom, leaving her splayed out before him. Her body resembled a goddess as she laid there completely nude beneath him.
His ogling of appreciation of her body was interrupted by Sofia grabbing ahold of his shoulders and pulling him down for another kiss. She keens into his mouth, breath hitches a bit when she feels his swollen girth prodding through his boxers and pressing against her center. Her body twitches at the delicious contact. “Rafe.”
He moves his lips insistently along hers, kissing her with an insatiable vigor, sucking on her wet tongue, tugging at the plushness of her bottom lip. Sofia’s mind feels dizzy, her body ached for his touch. Her nipples go taut, he could feel the swollen nubs pressing against his flattened chest. His hand ghosts over her tender breast, squeezing and fondling the sensitive flesh as a cacophony of her moans rings through his ears.
“Need you, now.” She huffs, impatiently.
(And he feels it too, the same insatiable desire that’s reflected in the way she’s currently looking at him.)
His cock twitches against his thigh at Sofia’s pleads. Propping the weight of his body onto his elbow, he lifted off of her so that he was able to tug his boxers off. Flicking them aside elsewhere, he shifted his body again, upholding his weight on his elbow so that he was now hovering over her.
He slides a hand underneath her ass, lifting her hips up so that he’s angled just at her center. A breath catches in Sofia’s throat at the intrusion of him slowly penetrating her. It’s pleasure that licks up her spine when she finally feels him inside of her — thick and stretching her fully enough to have her eyes stinging with tears again.
They’re sprawled out naked across their bed post orgasm. Rafe eases his flaccid cock out of Sofia before plopping down next to her. His arm rested behind his head as he turned to look over at her.
“I know that I apologized already, but I really am sorry. And I’ll uh, apologize to Chase for what I did.”
His comments causes her to look over at him. She nods her head, somberly, giving him a small smile. “I know. I am too.” She scoots her body closer to his, tucking her head on his forearm as her arm rest over his torso. “And I know that my schedule’s kinda crazy, but just know you’ll always be the most important person in my life no matter what.”
He brings her hand up to his mouth so that he’s able to brush a chaste kiss against her knuckles. He caressed his thumb over the stunt of the diamond on her engagement ring. She smiles as she watches his idle movements, “I can’t wait to be your wife,”
His smile broadens as he craned his head down, meeting her halfway in another kiss. “Sofia Valdez-Cameron,” He murmurs, nodding his head. “It’s got a nice ring to it,”
“Mhm. So does Rafe Valdez,” She teases, feeling his breath coolly brush against her face as he huffs a small laugh. He retracts from the embrace, his eyes soften in adoration as he pushes a few strands of hair out of her face.
“I’ll be whoever you want me to be just as long as I get to marry you,” He avows, making her heart swoon and her love for him grow more profoundly.

This scene right here, after Agatha lashes out in anger and says she never wants to see Rio again. There's a brief moment as she watches her walk away that you can see how hurt she is. Agatha's expecting Rio to put up more of a fight. I don't think she ever wanted her to agree and that's what shocked her the most. Because she knew that once Rio gave up on them it's really over. Kathryn Hahn's acting right here, the expressiveness of her eyes says all we need to know.

Why did I think that Jophiel's face being a solid color would make the whiteboard easier?! I should have known better!?
Anyway! @asleepyy 's Oopsie Omens au broke me. It's amazing! You should read it! How is it that I know the plot of the book and the show, and I'm *still* anxious to find out what happens next!?! It's an AU where everything is almost exactly the same minus one key difference!?!? I know what will happen next! But also, I don't.

Imagine Rolan watching from the tower in horror as the brain, that he knows Tav is-was- on, plummeting from the sky.
