Okay, I've only read a few chapters of Young Blood so far, but some of the things I really enjoy (with mild character-related spoilers; I probably won't say anything about the plot itself yet):

That we're given most of the Umbrellas' favorite foods! Klaus likes bubblegum ice cream, Diego likes roast beef with new potatoes and green beans, Luther likes hamburgers, and Allison used to like hotdogs. There's nothing about Viktor or Five's so far, but we can assume Five's has always been fluffernutters.

Diego is implied to be extremely food-motivated and I love that for him. Viktor thinks he could be a star chef if he wanted to ditch superhero work. 11/10, love foodie Diego.

Reginald named his car Hermes (I'm strangely affectionate about this).

Klaus has been hotwiring Reginald's car since 12 and was taught to drive by a dead NASCAR driver. Klaus enjoyed sitting in the garage with the car running, but didn't realize that you could get monoxide poisoning that way. He's apparently died frequently, and thought he was just going to sleep. Pogo would carry him to bed.

This implies Pogo knew that Klaus was immortal, and most likely also knew that Reginald was routinely killing him.

Klaus also has been planning to leave the Academy for a long time, but hasn't gotten up the nerve. We all know that Diego is the first to leave and (at least according to You Look Like Death) Klaus was the last, so I think this is an interesting angle. It doesn't break canon, per se, but it raises a few questions about why Klaus didn't leave like he planned.

Ben asked every day if Klaus had seen Five's ghost. His biggest hope is that they'll one day all be together again. This shatters me.

It's also interesting that Ben is both one of the most obedient and yet most vocal about Reginald's abuse. He seems extremely aware of it, but is far too afraid to defy their father and kills primarily because he knows that he'll be reprimanded if he doesn't.

Ben canonically views himself as a monster. :( I knew this. I suspected this. But still. Seeing it typed out makes me :((( lmao

I'm also really enjoying that it neither shies away from Luther/Allison nor the fact that it's extremely normalized between the Umbrellas to be pretty, unrepentant jerks toward each other. I think that if they removed any of these things, or chose to gloss over them, it'd risk watering down the effects of their abuse too much in a book that already doesn't seem keen on diving too deeply into their trauma. It's also interesting to see how blatantly weird they all are developmentally and socially, straddling a line between considering each other family and treating each other like coworkers. At times, it feels a lot like they just call each other siblings, but there's no real attachment to those terms, even if they do care about each other a lot. They really do not understand how to be a family or normal kids, or hardly even real people outside of the super-powered killing machines that Reginald wanted them to be.

On to some things I'm not totally digging but aren't a deal-breaker:

Mild canon inaccuracies. I've been told that this book is pretty glaring in the department, but so far I haven't seen anything too bad. The only notable ones so far are: - That the Umbrellas, except Klaus, have never sneaked out before. It's been a while since I've seen S1, but I could swear that it's canon that they all regularly sneaked out to Griddy's even before Five left. - Klaus calls himself a telepath. This is common fanon, but there's nothing in canon itself to support that he is capable of telepathy. In fairness, though, Sheinmel, the author, doesn't actually seem to write Klaus as a telepath. It really just reads as if she thinks that telepathy and mediumship are the same thing. - There's a lot of emphasis on Luther being big. He's constantly being described as struggling with his clothes, or fantasizing about how much larger he'll get, and rips the back out of a jacket at one point because... I guess?? he's so large??? He's very much written as if Sheinmel thinks that Luther is a musclebound 17 year old, when teenage Luther has never been big in the same way that post-serum adult Luther has been. He was always tall, yes, but I really don't think he should have been struggling with tearing clothes.

Typos. It's not glaring, but there are some errors here and there with spelling and punctuation. Combined with the telepath thing, I wonder if Sheinmel just didn't have a great editor.

The writing style is really juvenile. I knew that this would be a young adult novel, so I didn't expect beautiful prose, but the writing feels like this book is meant for the younger end of YA. It rambles, restates obvious points, and sometimes the phrasing feels dumbed down to the point of near condescension. Meanwhile, characters still use mild swears, which gives the book this weird feeling that it doesn't quite know what age bracket it was written for.

But I am otherwise really enjoying it so far. It's fun and I appreciate the insight into the Umbrellas' lives as teens and their internal thoughts about each other, regardless of how canon or not-canon this novel is.

Of course Micky wanted The Monkees to be successful. When people dreamed of being in a band, they dreamed about being rich, about being sought after, about being something impressive. All the same, most of the time when their band got passed up for The Jolly Green Giants, or when a club's manager slapped cash in their hands and said 'Actually, don't come back next week. We didn't get the turnout with you we were expecting,' or when the crowd danced like they were being held at gunpoint, it was disappointing but something he could shrug off. Sure, no one wanted to face rejection. But it was the name of the game, and they all knew they were better off than a lot of guys out there. They had a roof over their heads. They had clean clothes on their backs. Their stomachs weren't always full but didn't double them over. When they opened up the front door, love was always on the other side. All those things went a long way to soothing any frustration.

But The Monkees had been on a losing streak a mile wide, and Mike's stress over it all was stirring up a frustration that clean clothes couldn't fix. I'm not feelin' it right now, Mick, this, I gotta practice, man, I gotta nail this song, that. He could think of another thing Mike had to nail, but he ground his teeth and gave his support instead, sincere despite the ache of it. He always had comfort to offer, no matter how much he'd rather they circle back to the topic of being failures after a half-hour break. Or at least a couple minutes; he didn't need much time at all.

This morning was no different than any other had been, recently. He kissed Mike's neck, murmured, "Before we gotta get going…." a statement as much as it was a question.

Mike shook his head.

Micky sighed and rolled back over to look at the ceiling. He was becoming well-acquainted with the weird stain that looked like Hawaii.

Mike looked at Micky a moment. "I don't mean to make you feel unwanted," he said, uneasy. Scared of breaking up, scared that that was where he was pushing them all on his own.

Micky's face scrunched up. "Huh? It's not about that." He squirmed a little, aching, trying to settle. "I know you want me. You just won't let yourself have me."

He would've stopped trying if the problem had been disinterest. But he'd seen Mike's eyes dark with desire. He'd felt Mike's gaze track him when he'd come in from the beach, wet and tired and only in swim trunks, toweling his hair dry. He'd caught Mike's eyes then, dropped the towel around his neck, and tipped his head in an invitation. Mike had turned his head away to disinvite himself. He'd seen Mike playing guitar for hours on end, watched Mike's anger at himself grow. And he'd gone to Mike, dropped to his knees, and parted his lips, a smile teasing at the corners despite his mouth being open and wanting. And Mike had swallowed hard, made to set down his guitar before regathering himself and shaking his head. Micky had seen Mike's arousal for him, known Mike was hard in his pants. And he felt it, at the ends of those long nights when Mike finally came to bed because he couldn't practice guitar and write songs twenty-four hours straight no matter how badly he wanted to. It was Mike getting into bed with him that had woken him, the bed dipping, growing cold as the blanket was lifted, hot as Mike's body filled the space. Mike must've not been certain about Micky's tone, couldn't determine if he was angry, because he gave an affirmative, but non-committal sort of shrugging nod.

"Okay," Micky said, "Okay." He smiled wide, straddled Mike's hips. "Man I can work with that."

"Micky…" Mike started.

"I hear you, don't worry, we won't, right now—," Micky said, rolling his hips while he talked, breath hitching, feeling Mike's cock hard for him once more. "The crowd's been real rough on us, right? One step from throwing tomatoes…Maybe that— maybe that—," he wanted to make a joke, say maybe that wouldn't be so bad. They could get free food that way. A couple more gigs and they could stop ducking under windows to hide because they saw Babbitt skulking around outside the pad, wanting to tell them they were a week behind on their rent. They could fill their cabinets with food. It was exactly the kind of sign that would put Mike's mind at ease. Things would be okay, soon if not immediately. Gigs like this were annoying in their own right— Micky found himself fake laughing, over the top and teeth showing, and awful lot. And they were boring to play, no one wanting to hear rock and roll, just lazy mood music that left his drums to collect dust outside of maybe the softest brush scrape against his cymbals. But they paid well, far more than the local joints he'd go to himself when he wanted to dance.

The problem Micky had with him that night was this kind of crowd never cheered.

Golf must have turned their brains all mushy, because with this kind of audience all they'd ever do is the gentlest clap at the end of the set, fingers of one hand against the palm of the other. Probably they wouldn't even notice enough to clap at all, and probably that would even be a good thing; the point at gigs like these was to fade into the background, just be there for the ambience, not to be the center of it all. And maybe Mike would take that and maybe he wouldn't, because maybe this wasn't enough to show that the tide was turning for them, or maybe Mike would want to play hard to get with him, wind him up all the more despite recognizing that the night had gone well. He and Mike kept looking at each other after each song, which carried out over the silence of the crowd as the men kept drinking and laughing and talking.

There was lightning there in their looks. Lightning and daring, a tease of the bet beneath all else that was on the line.

And at the end of the night as they started packing it in, the crowd was still completely silent. There weren't even those pathetic little golf claps.

Micky turned his face away from the crowd, hid his mouth with his palm, and yelled, "Woo-hoo! We love The Monkees!"

All those men in their expensive suits looked around confusedly, and finally caved to clapping just slightly more loudly than they would for golf.

"There only needed to be one," Micky reminded, "We got one." He pointed to himself with his thumb and lifted his eyebrows, a smug grin.

Mike looked him up and down. "You don't count," he said, "That's cheating."

"Who says? I'm your biggest fan, aren't I?" They smiled at each other sweet. There was barely a gap between them and he made it smaller, reaching to undo Mike's belt and slide it free from its loops. "Go on, make me scream some more."

Mike kissed him so fast, so fierce, that it forced a laugh of surprise out of him and knocked him back against the wall behind him. It made him lift a hand on instinct to Mike's chest, clawing at it, bunching Mike's shirt. He took in a gasping breath when they parted.

It would have been so easy to turn around. To give it as much preparation as was necessary and nothing more, to not even strip. To just undo Mike's jeans. To just push his own pants down just below his ass, to turn to the wall and let Mike fuck him and jerk him off fast.

What they actually did took only a little more effort, only a little more time, in the practical sense. no i appreciate the rambling!!! thank u for the recommendations :) for some reason i tend to struggle more with free tutorials, i think because i feel less pressure to finish them whereas with paid ones im like ok i spent real actual money on this i should probably make sure im not wasting it lmao. but i will probably check out that first one you linked for sure since that was one of the ones i was already looking at!! ngl i use blender so infrequently that i feel like i always forget Literally Everything about how to use it every time i go back to it so beginner friendly is probably a good thing lmao.

tbh im not expecting to get too much into texturing & stuff yet since i mostly just want basic face models to use for consistency when drawing my ocs from different angles... but like. i say that, but then that means i might as well do full body models & rig them so i can also use them to get proportions & poses more accurate... and if i want to have references for different expressions i should probably also learn how to rig faces... & if im gonna do all that i might as well texture them too. and i guess add like clothes, and hair thats not just a solid unmoving chunk lmao. for some reason textures just scare me tho lmao wdym you took a 3d thing and cut it up into a flat image. like i get it in theory but my brain Does Not Like It.

(i really, really dont use blender often lmao) and im still struggling to get the topology on the face to look good. honestly i should probably just restart it but i dont wanna :( but i did get one of those bundles with retopoflow a while back!! i just havent actually checked it out yet lmao. also that chart should definitely come in handy bc the head/neck connection is one of the parts thats been giving me trouble on the model i mentioned, i have one spot on it thats just connected weird no matter how much i try to fix it so hopefully i can reference that to figure something out.

felt!!!! the consequences make it something you Gotta do. and fellllt at the whole second paragraph, i was like "wellllll i'm just going to learn to model simple stuff to make the buildings in a comic i'm working on to make doing backgrounds easier :)" and that was a lie. it was a lie it was a huge lie. learning is my favorite pastime it was never going to just be simple building blocks.

the course does cover this and setting up seams on your model to unwrap from in a way that makes it very understandable luckily! my only complaint is that blender's painting system is camera oriented instead of vertex oriented like sculpting is. but as long as you keep rotating your model around and fixing things and making use of the mask tool to get sharper edges, it's not too bad

and @ paragraph 3 y e a those bundles come with so many addons that i'm like. well i Gotta get it. and then i do not touch them because i'm doing so many sculpts that i don't do anything with once i get to the hair stage 😭 i'm just too lazy for hairrr. but i think retopoflow does make understanding retopology a Bit easier once you know how to use it since it automates some things that are finnicky in blender like relaxing the topology to make the quads more even. one thing flycat does in a few videos is skip the sculpt completely and just do the low poly from scratch just using subdividing once or twice?? there were a lot of little topology tricks i picked up from this one. restarting the topology on your model might not be a bad idea just to refresh on how you did it before, but i know there's some built in stuff in blender now like drawing edges and mayyybe faces from the annotate tool?? and that makes it a lot easier. it's all just finding the motivation to finish the project, which i struggle with too 🥲 you and me buddy we got this.

I know we keep joking about these cut scenes but something ain't right. Even the angles they chose for those specific scenes was questionable😭 call me dramatic but I feel like cutting that balcony scene for example, reduced the impact it would have had. Also, there's a continuity error in the kitchen scene. Ray's shirt randomly changing in the bike ride montage. The editing was a bit weird with their scenes. But maybe I'm just being bitter

idk who's joking about it but not me lmao I take this very seriously.

the continuity in this episode was questionable lol. I have no explanation for why they would cut the tattoo + balcony part, like I said this isn't about time, we're talking about a total of literally 10 seconds here. Jojo said the cup flipping scene in ep3 was cut due to a continuity error so maybe that was the case for those 2 scenes as well but even if it was,,,, why didn't they pay better attention while filming. they have people for that you know.

I did not notice the change of clothing on the bike but after rewatching it, wasn't he just wearing a jacket over his shirt? I noticed a few continuity errors during the concert though. but overall I agree, the editing in this episode felt a bit off. also the topmew date scenes seemed weirdly edited to me.

I am admittedly a little anxious getting these two because typing this up I realized almost all my thoughts on them are extremely unpopular lol so I need everyone to prommy not to kill me 🙏

How I feel about this character

Ngl I hated his ass in 1-2 haha I was mourning Kazuma so bad, but he grew on me quickly like some kind of fungus. I was routinely laughing but cringing at the shit this guy did on screen. I do have qualms with how he handled the Iris situation (like. A Lot of them...he needlessly caused her so much more anguish by letting her think any parent of hers was still alive and by keeping her at arms length because he didn't think he was worthy to assume the role of dad even tho she imprinted on him like a duckling, not to mention the whole parentification she went through due to his issues) but I find him to be a fascinating flawed individual with a really fucking good design, I want his clothes so bad, also his theme is great. He lies but he wants to do what's right but he's manic but he's got a delicate ego but he's hilarious

Also round of applause to Herlock for giving us the Dance of Deduction, sure it dragged on at times but it was fun, extra applause for the dance around a bomb that one case

All the people I ship this character with romantically

Vanlock. I don't vibe with him x anyone else for a variety of reasons, none of them being "it's problematic" (short of like. Something actually illegal) so much as "I don't like that age gap" or "I don't like that ship because it makes one or both of them kinda scummy if they were fucking around" etc (like he knew Kazuma was alive, it would make him such a jackass if he was with Ryuu while Ryuu was grieving Kazuma y'know?)

He and Barok have bitter exes energy the few times they interact which is already hilarious but also post canon everything wrt Iris would result in a ridiculous co-parenting situation. I think there's a lot of interesting angst & healing potential between the little family dynamic there and I have written & read a lot on it, they're just really funny. It can be wholesome or toxic!

My non-romantic OTP for this character

I do think that maybe back in the day Herlock had unrequited feelings he never acted on that Yujin politely pretended not to notice

*prepares myself to get shot* hm/mk. I know they're the Sherlock Watson duo, but they are an iteration of it where I love their weird platonic friendship and not the romantic/sexual angle. They are inarguably important to each other and I think being platonic makes it more interesting the way they connected and kept in touch the entire time since they separated. Herlock brings out a levity & silliness in Yujin that's funny to see, and was almost certainly a major catalyst in Yujin healing from the loss of Ayame

My unpopular opinion about this character

I know some shippers think it's romantic that Herlock considered Yujin to be Iris's real dad but I think it was irresponsible and selfish of him to do that, considering Yujin did not seem to feel that way himself and poor Iris suffered for years from it. Like bro YOU'RE her dad! (He gets there eventually tho)

One thing I wish would happen/had happened in canon with this character

Ryuu should've punched him in the face when he realized his involvement in Kazuma's "death"

How I feel about this character

My poor little meow meow, the saddest wettest prosecutor. He's hot and his theme fucks really hard and he sucks so much but it's soooooo funny for the most part. It's interesting how difficult he is interpersonally to Ryuu & Susato (bc he's a racist bitch) while also being one of the most helpful prosecutors in the series from the gate. He's such a bitch about it the entire time tho but he really does indulge any stupid argument as he genuinely cares for justice (EXCEPT with Soseki he just wants to ruin that poor guy's life)

I get a bit defensive of being a bvz fan because like, yes he is racist, but also he's a British noble from 1899-1900ish he realistically would've been so much worse irl (almost every British char you interact with is racist 😔). I guess it's just like, this is the setting of the game, and it's completely understandable that's a deal breaker for people!!, but the fandom at large back in the height of when the duology localization came out was extremely aggressive against anyone even vaguely amicable to him. He's supposed to be a flawed yet sympathetic antagonist, he's the main prosecutor that's how the entire series has operated!! He also does show genuine remorse and dedication to change by the game's end, and I think it's important to let flawed characters get better because we need to let flawed people get better. He's realistic in an ugly way

Barok & Ryuu, they have the funniest rapport. I actually didn't realize "learned friend" was lawyer slang when I originally played the games, I thought Barok was just being a cunt and Ryunosuke decided "fine I'll be cunt too, bitch" when he started saying it back. Bvz pal he just wants to be your friend but you're so mean and intimidating haha! The way Ryunosuke just approaches him in 2-3 and is like "Soooooo heard your brother got murdered" and then later that same day shows up at his office with Iris, calls Barok ugly and Klint hot in the same sentence, and the two of them just harass him until he finally runs out of things to say, god it was so fucking hilarious.

The only way that entire scene would've been better was if Barok's desk was smashed and poorly reassembled like in the concept art

I'm a stealth trans woman. My primary friend group is all cis queers historically, with one person coming out as NB a while ago. We are all trans friendly and progressive. One of them is a cis man who is currently flirting with experimenting with his gender and maybe will be a trans woman. Which has now placed me in a weird situation that I have no idea what to do with, where maybe I should break stealth and come out to him (and only him) if he transitions, so he isn't alone or without guidance? There are a few ways I can interpret ‘the Rum Tum Tugger doesn't care for a cuddle/But I'll leap on your lap (…)’ + ‘I only like what I find for myself’:

Tugger likes to cuddle but he doesn’t like to be cuddled. Big spoon of the century.

(on a more serious note I do like the idea that he doesn’t like being held/weighed down while sleeping specifically because he doesn’t like feeling like he can’t get up if he so chooses, due to the ‘the cat’s sleeping on me I’m stuck here forever’ law. Especially if he was planning on leaving the person he’s sleeping with in the first place!)

Getting Tugger to admit he’s in a bad mood is difficult at best. There are few cats in the Junkyard/London who he’d sit down and have an actual conversation with due to ~celebrity worship~ and even fewer that he’d be willingly vulnerable with. And even then, it would probably take some prodding to get him to admit to it, and he’d probably only do so stiltedly. Tugger is very good at talking about his happy feelings. His bad/sad ones are harder for him to articulate.

Tugger has a loudass purr. A LOUDass purr. His purr can drown out a person speaking at a normal volume. Sometimes (cough when talking to Munk cough ) he doesn’t want the cats around him to know exactly how happy he is, so he can keep it silent if he wants. My hc that Tugger is additionally bad at being vulnerable means he never just tells Misto about how he feels outright, & I hc Misto as autistic, so Tugger’s weird behavior always throws Misto off when it abruptly starts. There’s a quick spot in cats 98 where you can see Tugger and Jerrie fistbump, so I like the idea of them being troublemakers together, though Tugger gets sick of Jerrie fast. & Tugger and Alonzo knew each other since they were very small, but they don’t like each other much, so they’re kind of reluctantly close.

As a kid he had a game called ‘Alonzo hit me’ where he would goad baby Alonzo into attacking him & then tell all the nearby adults (that were only partially paying attention to the playing kittens) that Alonzo just hit him out of nowhere. He would then watch like ^w^ as Alonzo got scolded. Alonzo still holds a grudge about this.

I do imagine Tugger starts to get more serious as he gets older; as of the period of the Ball I don't think he knows or cares much about fighting, but when he gets a little older he has Munk teach him how to hold his own and he helps patrol the Junkyard & such with Munk and Alonzo and all of them. And do you think finn and noah will act it out, have doubles act out that scene, or a little bit of both? Hey hey!! Prefacing this to say, while I do find it fun to talk about a byler sex scene and make jokes about the context/content and how spicy it could be - I genuinely do not believe they're gonna really get too explicit with it within the actual show. For any pairing, first off - there's not going to be any nudity. While it's NOT A KIDS SHOW it's also not a show historically rated M. TV shows do not typically hard pivot into explicit content for their last season like this (I personally wouldn't be phased, but that's not really how the industry works haha). Even if jancy get another scene or jopper gets something (I have a high suspicion we WILL be getting a spicy scene for jopper, but there's not going to be nudity imo), it's still not going to be any more explicit than the stancy scene. which was great! for the tone of the show!!

I honestly have full confidence that byler is happening, and I think that we're getting several steps of the relationship. Like it would be a disservice to be like 'oh we saved the world, here's a chaste little peck between mike and will at the very end!' nahhh, miss me with that. I trust the process. It's just such an important arc? I think the heavy lean-in to fully realized and expressed physical sexuality is a big part of will's arc in particular. So we might get something? I'm thinking a halfway point between the Steve/Nancy and the Jonathan/Nancy scenes. Like not full on simulated but not quite a fade to black? Like heavy making out, maybe shirts getting removed, grabbing at a belt, falling into bed (or a haystack! they're spending a lot of time on that damn barn set! lol), etc etc. They are the heart of the show so I think the byler romance IS the moment for season five.

Filming sex scenes in tv/movies is more like... choreography. It's really odd ballet. Akin to stop motion animation? And it's typically a closed set with a minimal crew these days. It's posing, reposition, reposition again, adjust the modesty garments, getting a few motions in, changing the camera angle to get a different reaction shot, close up of the actor's face, check in with intimacy coordinator, body double for a random limb, body double for whatever else, reposition, etc etc. it's honestly not sexy at all lol. But I don't even think it'll get to that level? I very much doubt it's gonna be anywhere near like, that euphoria show's levels of on-screen passion and nudity. I barely even consider the stancy scene soft-core and that was pretty tame imo. I think finn and noah are totally down with my prediction on the direction it will go. They've been with these characters for so long, and I think they're super dedicated to expressing the very best character arcs and they are excited about the relationship between the two - with this sort of scene being the pinnacle of formalizing that relationship in the eyes of the viewer. Maybe yeah - if this was a different show, a hard turn into a full nudity sex scene might be a big difficult to wrap their reality around at this stage in their careers, having barely even waded into on-screen romance in their filmographies thus far - but it ain't happening in this show. So no worries there.

gif 1: NIKO MY BELOVEDDDD. i love love love the green-pink contrast, i feel like that is just very niko!! we see her in other colours, sure, but in my mind they're her main two. obviously the pink is the sprites (and the lesbianism of course lmao) but the colour palette just really draws attention to it which is soooo pretty. and the yellow and greens!! the way her school clothes actually look green makes the whole thing SO cohesive and satisfying. also also the different shades of pink, like if i didn't look closely i would've thought it was one shade of pink except the colour palette made me look! *heart eyes motherfucker*

gif 2: ohhhhhhh my god turquoise+gold my beloved!!!!! sooooo in love with this palette it's not even funny. everything is so turquoise and kinda monotone with the funky lighting, and then you just have a few gold lights to give the whole thing life ough. gif 4: hhhhhhhh SUCH a fun base shot but not one that i think is usually giffed? at least i haven't seen it around. it's really lovely to get those scenes like little treasures! and the greens!!! god i love a good green and these are the BEST. the monotone? *chef's kiss* (also i think i said something about it in the ep1 reaction and i know there's an aesthetic reason for it BUT it really does make the boys feel more ghostly since the only colour on them that's represented is the greenness of the forest reflecting on them. it looks amazing, basically)

gif 5: oooooh neutrals + gold? did not expect it, but i LOVE. also very fitting for the bathroom as this sort of very mundane place. nothing supernatural's going on in here, no sirree. also also very fun camera angle! something something about the light itself being white, but the light it casts being this warm gold? also the reflection of the light in the water, never noticed that!! i know the water is for crystal to splash her face with, but it just gives off scrying vibes and i am such a big fan. they should let the gang explore more supernatural methods in s2! but i digress. (oh and crystal being much more present, the dark colour picking up in her hair as well as the tiles, and the beige and white in her rings, just like the taps! crystal is so alive)

Your Kent Parson work is incredible!! How do you paint something like that??

Thank you, Anon!! It look me like nine hours to finish it - I’m very proud.

If you’re asking about my actual process, I typically rely on a few reference photograph images for the actual pose bc I’m a cheater and life is short. I outline the overall location and angles of the body parts using the reference photographs, but ofc end up making a million changes to fit the face/hairstyle/body type for the character.

From there, I draw out the features - sometimes pulling from reference photographs, more often by hand (Kent was by hand, though the expression was definitely inspired by the pose model lol). Transform tool and layers are definitely your friends here.

Then the important next step is to lay down a whole lot of block colors to establish where bone structure/facial angles will reflect light in different ways. I use a LOT of photograph references from different angles for color blocking because I’d have to be a master artist to do that shit from memory lmao.

Once I’m happy with my blocking and the general feel of the character, I’m finally ready to paint. I don’t like obvious outline lines in my digital paintings and tend to prefer using color to create the features instead. So I usually mute my outline real low and go WAAAAY too deep down the rabbithole of recreating the effect of lines and definition for each feature. It takes FOR-EV-ER, but I love the effect:

I hate drawing hair with every fiber of my being, but it’s generally the same process. I luckily have a good brush to save me some time. Thank god.

I usually try to create clothing using a similar process, but I got lazy on Kent’s drawing bc I was already 8 hours in. So I just pulled a photograph of a hockey player wearing a white jersey and literally trace-colored the jersey. Hence the weird hyperrealistic effect on that element of the work. I’m cringing just looking at it 😅😅

Last step of painting is to use the transform tool to make any edits to the features of the piece, if something seems weird when looking at the overall effect. Embarrassed to say there’s usually a LOT of transform tool use at this stage.

To master, I apply a blur effect to mask any weird pixelation resulting from Procreate Whimsy™ - it makes the piece look a little better and more “painted”. Then I usually throw the work through an Adobe Lightroom filter to help with any weird coloring issues.

…and that’s about it! It’s definitely a technique native to digital art - there is no undo button or transform tool on paper - and I still see a million mistakes with every work I do. But it’s certainly a fun hobby!!

in short actually what the fuck

I'm sure sometime in the last few months I must have said something like 'yeah they will probably solve the spatial and temporal coherence issues that hamstring every instance of AI rotoscoping sooner or later'. I didn't really expect it to be this soon though??

like you've got 3D rotations of complex objects. detailed multilayer forests and snow and shit like that with complex camera moves. cloth physics. hair physics. movement in and out of depth. complex multiplane camera rotations with water physics. photorealistic humans at all kinds of angles and poses. stylised characters. crowd scenes. pictures in pictures. i'm going over stuff that's complicated and time consuming for a human animator, I don't know what a diffusion/transformer model finds difficult.

but honestly what's really throwing me is like, the types of jank? yeah, here and there you get a little bit of classic AI jank like shapes morphing into other shapes, objects vanishing behind other objects, that kind of thing. a big tell is the failure of object permanence, so if something walks out of view, it will likely disappear entirely, and something else can appear out of nowhere. (though not always - it's improved here as well.) that's the sort of jank I expected.

but a lot of the examples, the jank involves weird levels of coherence, like the one with the basketball - the basketball generates a second basketball which clips through the hoop, sure, but how the hell is the AI's model of 3D space good enough to figure out that a basketball there would have to intersect with a hoop in the same location? sure, if you frame through the video, you can see that the hoop kinda dissolves through the ball... but at full speed it really looks like a 3D render with clipping.

further flaws I notice - the videos notably don't include very many examples of fast motion. a lot of them have a bit of a floaty, slow-mo feel to it. I suspect that has to do with how it propagates the motion through time. it also tends to have that kind of glossy advert-like quality to the photography which I've come to associate with AI - everything is perfectly studio lit. in general I'd say it's better at photorealism than stylisation - the stylised images (mostly furry 3DCG-looking characters) tend to look a bit creepy, with too-wide staring eyes.

anyway in classic OpenAI fashion, they post a lot of glossy pictures but they're kinda cagey about how the thing actually works. it splits images into spatiotemporal chunks and does ~transformer magic~ on them and apparently that just gives you a really detailed world sim. besides that, they used a recent technique where you get another AI to label the training data to feed into the training of their main AI - you'd think it would collapse in on itself but no that works apparently?

on some level I guess it makes sense. transformer models scale well with data and like, video gives you thousands of closely related pictures to train off of and discern underlying patterns.

but also it can just straight up render a convincing simulacrum of minecraft. minecraft!! though probably not in realtime lmao. the pages here don't mention how long it takes to generate a video and what sort of hardware you need to throw at it to get these kinds of results.

until I saw this I would have said that 'AI-generated animated film' is years away at least. like the 'Animate Anything' model from that team in China earlier this year was impressive but clearly limited to fairly specific scenarios. this one... this one you could probably make an entire AI-animated feature-length film and have it not look like shit. it wouldn't be as striking and intentional as a really good human animator, you'd have to throw out a lot of bad shots along the way and have a pretty specific vision of what you're aiming at. I suspect the first good AI films will be made by people who are experienced making films using other techniques, and the best uses of the tech will combine it with other techniques to get a 'best of multiple worlds' situation. but still...

I'm too tired to figure out what I feel about this. future's gonna be fucking weird.
