Imagine This:
Evelyn Porter of 1919 was a beautiful woman who just wanted to be free. She wanted more than anything to sing and enjoy the parts of life that a woman of her time was not allotted.
Sam Taylor of 2019 was a beautiful man with a kind heart but a struggling mind. He felt he didn’t belong in the digital world. He liked working with his hands and making real connections.
One faithful day led to Sam traveling back in time and that is where he fell madly in love with Evelyn. Their love affair was short-lived although happy in totality it was also so very tragic.
>>>>
You
You knew the man that your son was named after. You knew that because of him you had Evelyn. You knew because of his brother you had the gorgeous old house fully restored and beautiful. The events of the years 1919 & 2019 that led to Sam traveling back in time and sending Evelyn to the future were a part of the bedtime stories you told your little Sam.
You met Evelyn shortly after she came to be in 2019. You knew Sam and his brother Jake through Jakes's husband who was your best friend. So when Evelyn came to the future with nothing and no one you quickly became friends. You wouldn’t believe their story if you didn’t see the letters Sam wrote from the past and hid in the wall for yourself. The letter he wrote to her and the way she described him was heartbreaking. You vowed to try your best to help Evelyn in any way you could. You helped her learn anything and everything. She stayed with you while the house was being remodeled and you became inseparable. And you were roommates.
Roommates turned into something more complicated after only a short time. Feelings developed. You thought she was pretty the moment you met her but her soul and energy just made you fall madly in love with her more each day. Her smile is better than sunshine. Her blue eyes lit up when she smiled and gawd you could get lost in them forever. Unfortunately, you thought there was no chance. She has adapted well to the future but sexuality is a big one. She was going to be married off without a choice in the matter before Sam rescued her. You didn’t want to ever impose on her freedom. So you kept your feelings to yourself. You even helped her make other friends and date. You were shocked but not really surprised when she learned you dated other women exclusively. She was amazed by the concept not put off like you thought she’d be. She really wasn’t made for 1919 she had always belonged here in the future.
She decided on her own to go out with some girls and guys and got to experience going to clubs, doing karaoke, and enjoying all that this world had to offer. Dancing and kissing strangers was something you had enjoyed before her and she seemed to like it, except she was searching for more. Something like what she had with Sam. You both just had fun together for a while.
Everything changed the day the house remodel was completed. She was set to move out of your place and move into the house alone. She didn’t want that and neither did you. You were lying on the floor exhausted from packing, moving, and unpacking.
“This place seems so much bigger.”
“Well, it technically is a little bit.”
“I guess.” She whispered.
You turned onto your side to face her “What’s wrong?”
She turned to face you with a sad smile “I just…”
Her voice trailed off as her gaze lowered to glance at your lips. You couldn’t help the automatic reaction to lick them under her intense stare. Her lips parted and she licked her bottom lip and sucked on it. Before you could ask her again what was wrong. Her lips crashed against yours.
You melted into her kiss, her lips slotted between yours perfectly. Her breath hitched and she hummed against your lips. It was more intense than you had imagined it could be. She pulled you closer by the back of your neck. She pulled until you were lying on top of her. Lips still in a dance tongues quickly joining. Her hands moved down your back. She moved her hands bunching up the t-shirt you were wearing. Her fingernails scratched lightly at your back under the shirt as she pulled your shirt trying to get it off of you. A shiver ran through you and made you pull away from her lips to sit up. Your gaze traveled from her panting expanding ribs to her kiss-swollen lips red from where you had been sucking on them, to her intense blue eyes. “Are you sure?”
“Yes. No one else makes me feel like you do.”
You smiled softly “Evelyn. I. Gawd I’m so in love with you.”
Her smile widened and she sat up “I’m in love with you too, y/n.”
She didn’t let you say anything else she captured your lips yet again and her hands traveled down to the hem of your shirt quickly pulling it off. You took your time unbuttoning her shirt. You trailed your kisses down her neck and followed each button. Kissing down the center of her body. Her nails dug into your shoulders sending an electric thrill up your spine. You moved back up as you pulled the shirt off of her kissing each of her shoulders. You quickly moved to the straps of her bra and pulled them down. You lean in, press your lips to her chest and slide your hands around to unhook it. Her breasts are so perky and her nipples are so hard. You glance up and watch her as you cup her breasts and run your thumb over her nipples. Her neck is exposed to you as she throws her head back with a moan. “Ah!”
The sound sends a shiver up your spine and you can’t help but want more. You kiss her breasts and lightly suck on a nipple as you pinch the other one. Your gaze is glued to the tension in her neck as she moans. You suck harder and lightly bite her hard nipple “AAAAAHHHH!”
She looks down at you pupils wide only leaving thin rings of blue. Her lips are parted as she breathes out hot and heavy. You switch breasts but suck and bite hard instantly this time. She arches into you. Your free hand grabs her hip to keep her steady and close.
“More, please.”
“Tell me what you want.”
“I need you everywhere.”
You pulled away from her quickly removing your own bra. You moved your hands to your pants and got up to quickly remove the rest of your clothes. You don't waste a second kneeling back down, helping her escape the rest of her clothes.
Eventually she is laid bare in front of you on top of the pile of clothes and you soak in every detail that you can. You map scars and freckles and curves. Her hips call to you begging for your kiss and you can't resist. You kneel between her legs and lean down pressing kisses to the dips in her hips. Under the soft subtle curve of her belly. Down soft curls. Off to the right side of her inner thigh and then over to the left.
Her hips rock and seek friction. Her legs tremble around your head as you press your lips where she needs them most. Your lips wrap around her sensitive clit and suck lightly as you hum in appreciation to the feel and taste of her. She moans and tangles her long fingers in your hair. She tugs as your tongue flattens against her. Your gaze travels up her body and you catch her gaze intense and focused on you. You reach a hand up and cup a breast squeezing. One of her hands fly to cover yours, lacing her fingers with yours as you both squeeze her breast. You moved your other hand under you. You feel her suck your finger in as you lightly press it to her center and it makes you moan to know she's so ready for you. Your own walls flutter and you can feel how wet you are on your thighs.
“Fuck Evelyn! You feel so good. You taste so good. You have me dripping down my thighs.”
“Fuck y/n! Ah! More.”
You easily slip another finger into her and the sound of her slick heat has you floating. You curl your fingers in a rhythm that you match with the squeeze of her breast and suction of her clit.
Her muscles tighten. Her body squirms and hips rock. The fingers that are tangled in your hair tug and the hand on top of your own squeezes harder. “There! Oh there! Please don't sto-AH! Fuck! Yes yes yes!”
You feel her walls tighten and contract and taste her sweet release moaning into her as your body trembles against hers. “Good so good.”
“Fuh oh ah sensitive!”
You pull out slowly and flatten your tongue as you try to gently get as much of your prize as possible. She tastes so good you have to resist diving your tongue deep into her.
She pulls you down and kisses you devouring your lips in a sloppy kiss. Her fingers trail between you and she slips two fingers into you with ease. You are already on the edge just from making her cum. You moan against her shoulder and she lightly bites yours. She curls her fingers and presses her palm against your clit; you drip into her hand and buck your hips. You feel the coil in your core as she bites and sucks on your shoulder and moves her fingers faster.
“You like that?”
“Yes oh gawd yes!”
“Are you going to cum for me? Say my name when you cum.”
“Ah fuck Evelyn oh my YES! Evelyn!”
“Yes yes oh fuck cum for me.”
Your body trembles and compulses and your walls tighten so hard around her fingers that she can't move. She presses her fingers to the sensitive spot inside you in a come hither motions and it has you soaking her hand. You ride out your orgasm until you collapse against her. She slowly removes her fingers and holds you tightly to her.
“That was-”
“Everything.”
“Yeah,x you take a steadying breath “Everything. I love you.”
“I love you too.”
>>>>
Time passed as it inevitably does. Your love for each other bloomed and blossomed into more than either of you could have ever imagined. You moved into the house with her the day after you made love for the first time.
You helped her get a YouTube channel started for her singing and she was discovered instantly. She is a world famous singer. Known for her sultry vocals and expressive lyrics. She proposed to you and you had a small but absolutely stunning wedding. Soon after you decided to adopt a child and gawd you never imagined your life would lead you here. Watching from the rocking chair as Evelyn, your wife sang sweetly to your 5 year old son.
She smiles scrunching her nose as she leans down to kiss his cheek. She whispers so softly and sweetly. “Goodnight Sam, happy birthday.”
He yawns adorably and you both softly laugh as he snuggles into his pillow and rubs his little face. She continues singing softly.
You put the book you were reading away and that's when you all hear it. The clatter of a wooden toy car falling down the stairs. You and Evelyn glance at each other and little Sam wiggles. “Mommy someone there?”
She glanced at the doorway and then back down at him “No baby. It's okay.”
You got up and walked to the stairs running down the steps. “Sam? Thank you for saving her.”
You don't know if he heard you but you hope he did. You glance back up the stairs and see Evelyn looking down tears stream down her delicate face.
“Oh baby.”
You rush up the steps and wrap her in your arms holding her as she cries. “Sorry.”
“No. It's okay. Come on, let's go to bed.”
“We have to clean up the party stuff.”
“It can wait, come on.”
You pull her into your bedroom and help her out of her dress and bra. You grab her favorite big t-shirt, one of your old college ones and gently pull it over her head. You change yourself and help her wash her face. You quickly do your own routine and get you both settled into bed.
You hold her tightly and ghost your lips over her cheeks. “It's okay to feel sad, to miss him.”
“I just, I knew this was coming, he said he told me, about it when he was convincing me to leave him behind. I just didn't expect it to make me feel like this. I love my life with you with our son but I just wish he knew. He saved me in multiple ways, he made me feel things I never had and he believed in me.”
“I know. If it's any comfort I miss him too, he was such a good friend to me. He was always so caring. I wish I could tell him how he also saved me. I was feeling a lot like he was. Lost, overwhelmed by the modern world and feeling lonely. I was starting to think that real connection just didn't happen anymore. Then you strolled in and saw the world full of wonder and excitement for all the possibilities your new found freedom offered. It, you, changed everything.”
“He really was something else. Something special.”
“He really was.”
She snuggles deeper into your neck and you run your fingers through her short brown hair. She sighs and her body relaxes against you. “I love you, y/n.”
“And I love you, Evelyn.”
A/N: I might write more little snapshots of their life. Let me know if you would like to see more.

#Noctislistening - Mimi Edition (7 of 12)
#noctislistening digidestined series for more, or click here for the master post!
Brought to you by @earlgreymon‘s Digidestined FM and @tangledupblue‘s Digidestined-inspired playlists. Listen!! Go, go, go!!
I’m giving myself more of a breather on busy work this week due to Thanksgiving coming up. What better way to break into singing and dancing with our girl Mimi?
Last time, we mellowed out with Iori (#6). Next time, we have our spirits lifted with Takeru! (#8)
Tumblr media
It’s Mimi’s turn now - get excited!!
Digidestined FM (Mimi version) @earlgreymon
“Style” by Taylor Swift? Yesss.
youtube
I also listened to “Out of the Woods” since that’s one of my favs off of 1989. Actually, I love that whole album - it was one of the albums that got me through, let’s just say a time period that ended with “Blank Space” and “Clean”. ;) Also one of my dearest friends burned a CD of that album for me and I had that album on loop for months on end.
I could totally see Mimi listen to these “powerhouse divas” and it makes sense to me being the one so quick to grab a microphone in the Digital World and charming her admirers with her sweet voice. I also love the Takeru “Lover” duet headcanon. :D
I like the ones listed here, but I am more partial to the 90′s divas. Mariah Carey was actually an idol of mine growing up. The Daydream album was my most favorite in my early teens and I thought “One Sweet Day” was the best song ever because Boyz II Men was another one of my favorites. But I’m going to show you the “Always Be My Baby” video just because:
youtube
My favorite from Celine Dion is probably “That’s The Way It Is” but she also has some amazing huge songs. I mentioned No Doubt in Miyako’s playlist, but I am more familiar with Gwen Stefani’s music with them than with her solo stuff. But I still think she is cool, and so are we (hehe).
I’d really like to give Carly Rae Jepson more of a listen since I only know two songs from her (I’m pretty sure I said the same thing about Owl City, who was mentioned along with her in Taichi’s post lol). One of them being “Call Me Maybe” (which is in Sam’s playlist, too!)
And Ariana Grande. I don’t have a particular favorite song but I have respect for her amazing vocal talent.
Ah, and Katy Perry! I wonder if I already mentioned her in an earlier post? “Thinking of You” is a classic and I enjoyed all of the ‘Teenage Dream’ album.
~*~*~*~*~*~
Peomimi @tangledupblue
When I first listened to this playlist, after the first song played (Taylor Swift’s “Welcome To New York”), I paused while I listened to the whole 1989 album. I love that album so damn much.
Mimi is just FUN. She is sassy and flirtatious but she knows who she is and she’s there for her friends. Don’t start any trouble with her or her girls, because she will not take that. (”Even if I’m loud, doesn’t mean I’m talking to you” xP) I also think from this playlist she can be someone to give into lust, infatuation, and maybe even love. But if her heart breaks, she’ll totally feel it, and once she’s over it the whole situation will be like a speck of dirt on her shoulder and she just has to flick it off.
I had a lot of fun listening to this playlist. I like the Ariana Grande song in this one. Mostly songs I could picture in a club or get you ready for a night out (Camila Cabello, Iggy Azalea, Selena Gomez to name a few) but there are some throwbacks like Gwen Stefani ft. Eve and Hilary and Hailey Duff. I also liked the song from Paloma Faith and yet another good tune from Betty Who. And I can’t not mention “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” because I mentioned it in Miyako’s playlist, but here, Miley Cyrus’s version fits Mimi. :)
It was hard to choose six but here we go:
Hailee Steinfeld - Most Girls // I love how empowering this is :)
Fifth Harmony - That’s My Girl // I’m glad there was this group and Little Mix around. I can’t think of any others that I liked before them, other than maybe Dream and B*Witched (I’m probably forgetting some others.. and I’m also probably showing my age lol).
youtube
~*~*~*~*~*~
Little Mix - Hair // I’m kind of obsessed with this song. I dunno if it’s because of my own long and growing hair, and during the rare occasions I went out with friends (a while ago, and I mean rare. Just need a Mimi- or Miyako- type friend to convince me to go) there were definitely some “get him out of my hair” situations lol. Here is where Mimi can do a dramatic flip and walk away to her friends because she’s not here for the hassle.
Dua Lipa - Blow Your Mind (Mwah) // I am liking her the more I listen to her. Side note - I happened to be watching the Grammy Nominations and saw that she was nominated. Yay!!
Janelle Monae ft Grimes - Pynk // Janelle is a QUEEN. All her songs are amazing and I love what she stands for. I was so lucky to see her live one year. This song is no exception
youtube
Troye Sivan - Bloom // I didn’t get a chance to talk about him in Iori’s post but I liked his song there and I loved the lyrics to the song here too. And omg I just realized, Bloom = Like Palmon! :) <3
~*~*~*~*~*~
Whatcha think? Karaoke time??? What are your favorites from Mimi’s playlists to sing to? Dance to? Or both?!

self-care 101 (covid-19 period)
Tumblr media
Since we’ve rolled round to another May bank holiday, I thought it’d be nice to share some tips with you. As a homebody, and someone who will do absolutely ANYTHING to avoid one specific boring activity, I’ve racked up quite a long list over the past few years. Obviously, I’m no professional - but I find these help. There’s no specific chronological order to these - just pick and choose as you like!
Get out of bed!
Or lie in if you need to. Whatever makes you feel good
Start off the day with some yoga or meditation, or basic stretches
Or pray for a bit if you’re religious
Make your bed: tuck your sheets in, rearrange your pillows, etc.
Brush your hair and tie it up nicely
Pick out a cute outfit - could even be your favourite PJs - and lay it out
Go take a soothing shower, or a bubble bath
Use a bath bomb, get some nice candles if you feel like it
Put on some nice music to relax to
Try out a new hairstyle or style your hair the way you would if you had somewhere to be!
Slap on some makeup, why not? :)
Floss your teeth, or maybe use that teeth whitening formula you never picked up again after using it for the first time
Pick out a recipe for a hair mask or face mask and put it on
Before doing any of these, make sure they suit your hair & skin type
E.g. if you have frizzy and dry hair, use a moisturising and rejuvenating mask vs if you have sleek, straight hair - use a volume-enhancing mask. Same goes for your skin - evaluate whether you have dry skin, oily skin or combination
Stick to the recommended leave in time! It can be extremely difficult to get out later otherwise
Or make your own mask! There’s tons of recipes on YouTube and Google :)
Make yourself a nice breakfast
Breakfast smoothies are amazing! A really simple recipe I use contains a few spoonfuls of oats, handful of fruits (e.g. blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, grapes), honey / sugar by taste and yogurt.
Or a nice bowl of your favourite cereal
Avocado toast - there are so many different varieties of this online, and I bet you’ll find that you like.
A fruit salad!
Eggs done the way you like
A full English if you’re feeling ambitious
Workout for an hour or so
This doesn’t have to be really equipment intense or challenging if you don’t want it to be
Some YouTubers I recommend: Chloe Ting, Emi Wong, Fitness Blender, MadFit, Blogilates, Yoga with Adrienne, etc.
Don’t over exert yourself. Take longer than the recommended break time between exercises if you need to
Grab a new book, or a book you just enjoy reading
You can browse through Spotify for any playlists to listen to while reading - or use a playlist of songs you like
Listen to some music you like
Or discover some new music using Spotify’s ‘Discover’ feature
Preferably something that lifts your mood!
Pick out a recipe you’ve been meaning to try and just make it!
Dance around the house to some music
This can also be a sort-of-workout!
You can try learning a routine
TikTok dances are so stupidly fun
Maybe get a friend on vid-call and learn a dance with them
Make some TikToks
Or duet some on the app!
Get out a new bottle of wine - it’ll make you feel boujie ;)
Or your drink of choice - I’m not big into alc so I usually love a cool mint lemonade or iced coffee
Sit outside if the weather is nice
Or even if it’s rainy! I particularly love rainy days
Go for a walk around your neighbourhood
Do some grocery shopping! It can be surprisingly fun when you’re in no rush - plus, that’s a task off your future to-do list
Go meet a friend - stand at least 2m away and have a chat
Or text/ call your family / friends
Houseparty is great to use because it’s got games that you can play together if you’re not big on talking
Watch that TV series / movie you’ve been trying to get round to
Play with your pet, if you have one!
Do a cute lil photoshoot
Put on a nice outfit and take some nice pictures using the timer
Pictures with your pet
Or take pictures of your surroundings when outside
Or of the new dish you’ve impulsively made
Grab a pretty notebook
Start a bullet journal
Or a diary!
Do some journalling using journal prompts online
One really simple activity I really like is writing out 3 things that made my day :)
If you’re a poet or writer - write write write!
Maybe take the first step towards starting a blog (like I did last week, aha)
Play a musical instrument
Or pick up something you haven’t played in a while
Try learning some basic chords online
Or just play your favourite music if you’re a professional
Sing along to your music!
Search up some online webinars and virtual events to attend
Lots of professional webinars on LinkedIn, even Facebook at times
Live museum and art gallery tours on Google!
Try some meditation
Headspace is a great freemium app, among others
Use a guided meditation from YouTube
Create a Pinterest account and start making boards
These can be pretty pictures
Or things you’ll have in your future house
Workout routines
Even more self-care recommendations
Sketching
There’s this activity where you put your playlist on shuffle and draw what comes to your mind when you hear each song
Or just search up an image online and draw it
Doodle in your bullet journal / book if you have one
Embroider/ stitch some of your old clothes
Plenty of tutorials online!
You can stitch in some cute images :)
Try a new podcast
There are so many to explore on Spotify under the Podcasts section
Or watch something on YouTube
Learn something new if you feel like it
Pick up a subject area of interest and search it up on YouTube
You’ll get so many results!
Reorganise your house / room
Put on some music to jam along to while doing this!
Vacuum
Or just tidy all those papers off the desk
Reorganise your drawers
Fold your clothes
Dust any surfaces - super satisfying!
Maybe spice up your furniture placement
Try moving things around - be careful not to strain yourself
Do some laundry maybe
Yawn, but can be satisfying once you’ve done it!
Purge your wardrobe of any old clothes
You can donate them to charities
Or sell them on apps like Depop
Do some online shopping
Be careful not to spend too much though! :)
Download a photoprint app and get some pictures printed
There’s a lot of apps that offer you __ amount of free prints with delivery costs - not a bad deal!
You can finally make a photowall / collage
Try some scrapbooking
Get out some old newspapers and magazines and cut out any pictures of words that particularly catch your eye
Make pretty lil collages or spreads with them
Reorganise your digital folders
E.g. bookmarks on Chrome
Saved folders on Insta
Email folders
To Do lists
Give them pretty names so you’re more likely to use them in future
Catch up on some much needed sleep
Afternoon cat naps are actually lovely!
Make yourself some tea or coffee and just sit by the window with some music
Cliché and niche, but makes you feel calmer!
Try some chai recipes online if you’re into relatively milky tea or trying out new recipes
I’m not a big fan of chai ^ which is surprising as an Indian, but my family and friends love it soo
Do something with your family / roommates
Movie night!
Group dinners (even better - themed dinners!)
Or a fine dining wine night (bonus points if you dress up!)
Board games night
Or just games night e.g. charades, Headbandz, Psych (app)
DnD - never tried it but sm people have recommended it!
Make some TikToks
Sit around and chat
This is random but you can make PPTs about things you like and present them to each other - good for shit n giggles :)
Play an old online game e.g. Fireboy and Watergirl!
Create each other in the Sims
Organise some friendly competitions :)
Truth or Dare?
Look at star sign stuff with them - whether you believe or not, it’s an interesting thing to do nonetheless
Do Enneagram tests - extremely interesting and scarily accurate from my personal experience
Experimental cocktails maybe!
Some DIY arts and crafts!
Pitch a tent outside
Or make a pillow fort inside
Speaking of which - pillow fights!
Karaoke night
Or set up your own club - make a playlist, get some strobe lights or turn off the lights and get everyone to switch on their phone flash and just dance around. Get some drinks if you want as well!
Have a BBQ - great to do especially in the afternoons or early evenings!
Have a date night if it’s just the two of you :)
Have a picnic outside
Text someone something nice!
Win-win for the sender and the recipient :)
Great chance to reconnect with someone
Cleanse your devices & social media profiles
Change your profile pictures, bios
Archive / delete some pictures (we’re all guilty of this)
Maybe restart your account if you haven’t used it in too long, have too many random followers or just want to start afresh
Check your phone storage and delete stuff accordingly
Change your wallpaper / theme
Back up old pictures and delete them off your device
And that’s my list for now! I might add to it later if something comes to me but I hope you guys enjoy this! :)

A quick visit to Seoul from the POV of a past student

Interview // Greentea Peng
Tumblr media
For NME. Read online.
Pitched 8hZ below standard tuning, 432hZ is believed by some to be the natural frequency of the universe. “It resonates more in your heart space, and less in your headspace,” Greentea Peng explains, her relaxed, south London-via-Hastings drawl barely audible above the roars of passing traffic. “Basically, it’s the difference between smoking a fat spliff and eating a hash edible.”
Hungover outside a cafe in north London, the morning after her first gig in eight months, the 26-year-old singer-songwriter is rationalising her decision to deviate from standard concert pitch on her long-awaited debut. “I actually find that if I’m in a cab and mainstream radio’s on for more than 15 minutes, I get a headache. 440hZ is so obtuse and intrusive; it doesn’t really occur anywhere else in the natural world. So I wanted to bring things back to the birds and the bees a little bit.”
In harmony with nature and out of step with the rest of the industry sums up Aria’s approach as Greentea Peng perfectly. It’s been her raison d’etre since 2018’s ‘Sensi’ EP, the collection that first introduced the rest of the world to her hallucinogenic blend of soul, dub, reggae and R&B. And that same maverick touch powers ‘MAN MADE’, the immersive, 18-track collection that she made in the wilds of Surrey last summer.
Holing up at a pal’s house with her seven-piece band, The Seng Seng Family, plus Digital Mystikz-man Mala and regular producers Earbuds, Swindle, and Samo & Kiko, Aria spent an entire month living and breathing music. “It was when we had that mad heatwave so it was quite surreal, actually,” she recalls fondly. “I felt like we were in the ’70s or something: drinking bare mushroom tea, swimming in the lake and just playing music all day and all night. We were making, like, seven tunes a day; just a ridiculous amount of music. It was amazing.”
To be fair, so are the results. Taking her cues from Finley Quaye’s 1997 debut ‘Maverick A Strike’ – a lifelong influence, alongside ‘Who Is Jill Scott?’, The Fugees’ ‘The Score’, and ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’ – Aria’s only aim was to balance live instrumentation with electronic touches. Genre-wise, everything was totally up for grabs, which goes some way to explaining the sheer scale of sonic eclecticism on display.
It’s definitely a pretty dazzling range, extending from the horn-heavy dub of ‘This Sound’ to the Eastern mysticism of the flute-flecked ‘Be Careful’, via ‘Nah It Ain’t The Same’s psychedelic grooves, a track that starts out somewhere in the vicinity of trip hop and gradually morphs into piano-powered drum ‘n’ bass. Even more impressive is the fact the set feels utterly cohesive, a feat it’s difficult to imagine many other artists pulling off at such an early stage in their career.
Though Aria’s only been making music seriously for three or so years, she draws on a lifetime of eye-opening experiences, from her time working in the bars and clubs of east London, to the months she spent travelling Central America in her late teens/early 20s. “I worked on a yoga retreat in Mexico for some mad American woman,” she laughs. “MAD. But it was a really good experience. It was like I was meant to be there, if you know what I mean? Being able to sit through these seminars and see people’s transportive journeys over such a short period of time was so eye-opening for me.”
As she explains, this meditative quality is integral to her output as Greentea Peng. “Spirituality comes from being very depressed for half of your life and having to transmute those vibrations into higher ones. It comes from the long, ongoing journey I’m on with my mental health. There’s no option for me to make shallow music because it doesn’t serve a purpose.”
This journey began as a young teen. As a child she was always obsessed with music, participating in choirs and singing Oasis and The Jam at karaoke with her Iraqi-English father and Trinidadian-European mother, as well as listening to her step-dad’s record collection, which ranged from Black Sabbath to The Clash. After a spell making songs on GarageBand at her local youth club, at 14 she withdrew into herself, and stopped performing entirely – without music as an outlet, she found other ways of escaping her stresses.
“Literally, drugs was how I dealt with things. There was no talking about feelings or trying to express them. And then I went through a whole struggle with addiction and that was really when God served it up on a plate to me and I had to choose. Luckily I had the strength to write, because it was a very dark time. A really fucking dangerous one.”
Having revived her interest in making music while travelling in Mexico and Costa Rica, Aria released her debut EP in 2018, followed by ‘Rising’ in 2019, and a string of singles in 2020, which in turn led to a top five placing in the BBC’s Sound of 2021 poll this January. Interestingly, none of these tracks made the cut for ‘MAN MADE’.
“Songs like ‘Hu-Man’ and ‘Revolution’ and ‘Spells’ were just not part of the album,” Aria insists. “The albums that I hold closest to my heart are complete, conceptual pieces of work. And that’s just how I felt the album had to be. An album’s not about being comfortable. In fact, I think it’s actually the opposite.”
To reinforce the point, ‘MAN MADE’s boundary-breaking arrangements are further enhanced by lyrics that tackle an array of subjects close to Aria’s heart, from mass incarceration (‘Free My People’), systemic oppression (‘Man Made’) and mental health (‘Suffering’) to blissed-out hedonism (‘Party Hard’) and unity (‘Dingaling’). More than most albums, listening you’re struck by the sense that this is very much a snapshot of Aria as an artist right now.
And, as she confirms with a laugh, where she goes from here is really anyone’s guess: “all I know is that I don’t want to do anything anyone else is fucking doing.”

The Annotated “Playback”
Tomorrow, Friday October 20, begins OVFF 33, the annual Ohio Valley Filk Fest, the biggest filk convention (certainly in stature; probably in people too?).
I am thus pleased to announce that after months of on-again-off-again work, and the assistance of several friends including @animatedamerican and @jchance4d4, I have finished the project envisioned here, and annotated all of the references in Andrew Ross’s “Playback.”
(Well, as much as I could. One or two were not identifiable fully.)
A lot of people commented approving of this idea when @seananmcguire reblogged this, so I hope you see the fruits of our labor.
Song above the cut; references below.

Mary Shelley: As in, the writer of the first science fiction novel, Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus.
HG Wells: Wrote The Time Machine and War of the Worlds and, along with Jules Verne, is considered one of the fathers of science fiction by people who don’t count Mary. (Jules pioneered “hard” SF, where he justified as much as he could with science; HG was busy making social metaphors.)
People meeting at hotels: AKA “conventions.” The first SF con was (debatably) Philcon in 1936, when ten people from the New York SF club went down to Philly to meet those guys. They called it a convention because the Democratic and Republican National Conventions had both been in Philly earlier that year, so it was a joke, see. The first World Science Fiction Convention was in New York in 1939.
Rudyard Kipling: English poet and journalist, famously a representation of British imperialism, but a lot of his stuff got set to music by Leslie Fish (for whom see more later).
People singing ditties at the bar: AKA filk. Or karaoke. Or any other sort of thing that happens when people who sing are near people who sing.
Gilbert, Sullivan: Light operettists famous for patter. They get refilked a lot.
Rounds of Young Man Mulligan: "Old Man Mulligan” was a 1940 story from Astounding Science Fiction by P. Schuyler Miller; as far as I can tell it was a pretty standard adventure story but it featured the titular Old Man who’d been around forever. “Young Man Mulligan” is an SFnal version of "The Great Historical Bum” (aka “I Was Born About Ten Thousand Years Ago” or “The Bragging Song”; lyrics here); it opens “I was born about ten thousand years from now,” so you can see how it’ll go from that. It was one of the original “everybody keeps writing new verses” songs; Bruce Pelz published almost 70 in an early filkbook and many many more have been written since. (The Pelz lyrics do not appear to be available online.)
Poul and Karen Anderson: Poul was a Golden Age writing legend, one of the Grand Masters of SFWA, maybe one rung down from Asimov and Heinlein (maybe). Karen, his widow and sometimes co-writer, is among many other significant things the first person to deliberately use the term “filk music” in print. They both wrote their fair share of filk, and were inducted into the Filk Hall of Fame in 2003.
Songs in the Key of R: Another way to say “off key.” See this folk song (lyrics here) of...disputed provenance (I have found a few different claims of authorship).
Martha Keller: Poet and balladeer, born 1902, died 1971. A number of her poems from Brady’s Bend and Other Ballads were put to music by Juanita Coulson (see below) in 1984 on “Rifles & Rhymes” by Off Centaur Publications (see below).
Tolkien: Do I really need to? Fine. Wrote The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and basically created the modern fantasy genre on accident while he was busy with constructed languages and mythologies.
Songs of worlds as yet unseen: AKA “filk.” See also “Folk Songs for Folk Who Ain’t Even Been Yet,” by Leslie Fish (see below), which was the first commercially published filk album.
TH White’s Arthurians: White’s The Once and Future King is a distillation and to some extent modernization of the King Arthur legend; the first part was The Sword in the Stone and yes, that’s what the Disney movie was adapted from. And yes, there have been plenty of Arthurian filk songs over the years.
Frederick Pohl’s Futurians: An early group of SF fans, specifically New York area fans (several of them were part of the 1936 Philcon mentioned above). Famously, several politically-minded Futurians were arguably-banned (whether it was really a “ban” still gets debated today) from the first Worldcon in ‘39 for handing out political flyers; Pohl was one of those.
Tom Lehrer: He’s a retired mathematics professor who “hangs out” at UC Santa Cruz, but in the ‘50s-’60s he was an active mathematics professor and also a fairly popular political satirist. Despite having no love for folk music (see his songs “The Folk Song Army,” lyrics here, and even moreso “The Irish Ballad,” lyrics here, wherein he calls the folk song “the particular form of permissible idiocy of the intellectual fringe”), his stuff gets sung a lot in filk circles.
Mondegreens: Misheard lyrics, like the famous “‘Scuse Me While I Kiss This Guy” (for “Kiss the Sky,” by Jimi Hendrix). Named by Sylvia Wright in 1954 after her own mishearing of the ballad “The Bonnie Earl o’Moray; the line was “They hae slain the Earl o' Moray/And laid him on the green,” and she heard “and Lady Mondegreen.” The term caught on, and it and/or some individual mondegreens have been the inspiration for no small number of filk songs and at least one filk band.
Slan Shacks: Early term for an SF clubhouse or house filled with fans; named for A.E. van Vogt’s 1940 novel Slan which was an early version of the persecuted-superior-race-of-beings story (think X-Men). Fans in the ‘40s-50s picked up the phrase “Fans are Slans” in yet another example of the weird ostracism/superiority cycle that pervades fandom to this day.
Fanzines: The internet before the internet. When fans wanted to communicate over long distances and all they had was printed paper, they printed papers. They made little bound fan-made magazines (hence, fanzines, or just zines) of their songs, stories, jokes, and opinions and mailed them to each other. A lot of early filk was in the pages of fanzines.
Music circles: How filk typically happens--people sit in a circle and sing. They usually take turns. See below for “bardic” and “chaos.”
Reprints: Printings again. A lot of filk didn’t necessarily get them, but some did, including some early albums, some early filkbooks like the NESFA Hymnal, see below, or the Westerfilk Collection.
Jacobs has a misprint!: While Karen Anderson (see above) was the first person to deliberately use the word “filk” in print, the first use of the word at all was a typo in Lee Jacobs’s essay, which ended up being called “The Influence of Science Fiction on Modern American Filk Music.” It spread in conversation as a funny typo for a while before Karen fixed it in a tangible medium of expression.
We shouted “MacIntyre!” (and the rest of that chorus): “When the Old Dun Cow Caught Fire” or “The Old Dun Cow” or “Macintyre!” is a very classic music hall song (written 1893) that gets performed by basically every folk or filk group that aims for that “British Isles drinking song” feel. See here for pedigree, lyrics, and recording.
Amazing Stories Annuals: In 1927, Hugo Gernsback published Amazing Stories Annual, a pulp magazine of “scientifiction” (the term “science fiction” hadn’t been coined yet). It sold so well he made it quarterly almost immediately; he lost the rights a few years later and the magazine ended up falling to the 800-pound gorilla that was Astounding Science Fiction. But it was arguably where all this started.
Pelz’s Filksong Manuals: Bruce Pelz, a legend of California fandom, was among other things one of the first creators of bound, organized, and published filkbooks (complete with sheet music!), which were titled the Filksong Manuals. (He’s mentioned under the “Young Man Mulligan” entry; it was one of the Manuals that had those 70ish verses to “Mulligan.”) Pelz was inducted into the Filk Hall of Fame posthumously in 2007.
Dr. Demento tunes: Barry Hansen, AKA “Dr. Demento,” was a DJ in 1970 when he realized that “novelty” tunes lit up the phone banks more than rock and roll, and created the “Dr. Demento” persona for a syndicated radio show of novelty, comedy, and otherwise unusual music. It was on the radio weekly until 2010 and is now produced weekly online. He’s played a fair amount of filk over the years, reintroduced Stan Freberg, Tom Lehrer, and Spike Jones to a grateful world, and both inspired and launched “Weird Al” Yankovic’s career.
Callahan’s Crosstime Saloons: Callahan’s Crosstime Saloon by Spider Robinson and the various “Callahan’s Place” stories that followed had more than a few filk songs among the lyrics (Robinson is a songwriter himself), and at one point a couple of filkers (Jordin and Mary Kay Kare, see below) appear as characters to sing their filk song about Callahan’s.
Hope Eyrie: Listen here. Considered by many to be the “anthem” of filk, or possibly of science fiction fandom (inasmuch as it’s possible). Written by…
Leslie Fish: One of the most significant filkers in history; not only did she write “Hope Eyrie,” she also wrote the infamous-beyond-infamy “Banned from Argo,” created the subgenre of “Kipplefish”  by setting Rudyard Kipling’s (see above) poetry to music, had the first commercial filk album (see above), helped to popularize filk music, wrote some of the earliest Kirk/Spock slash fiction...she’s pretty important, is what I’m saying. When the Filk Hall of Fame was founded in 1995, she was one of the first three inductees.
Bounced potatoes off the dish: At Westercon XIX in San Diego in 1966, the hotel was legendarily bad. Most notably, the Guest of Honor banquet featured completely inedible food, prompting Poul Anderson (see above) to set a filk to the tune of “Waltzing Matilda,” entitled “Bouncing Potatoes.”
Robert Aspirin: SF writer active from the late 70s until his death in 2008, Bob was also the founder of the Dorsai Irregulars (see below), and one of the people who brought early filk from private hotel rooms into public spaces, by (among others) holding a bit all-night filksing in celebration of the Irregulars’ formation in 1974. He was another of the first Filk Hall of Fame inductees in 1995.
Gwen Zak: One of the more spiritually-focused filkers, Gwen is a Pegasus Award (see below) winner for “Circles” and nominee for “I Am Lord” (cowritten with Leslie Fish).
Dawson’s Christian: A filksong by Duane Elms, written 1987, about a ghost ship. It’s been refilked more than a few times itself, including “Dawson’s Concom” (where it’s about ghost...convention runners).
Captain Jack: Not Pirates (probably), not Torchwood (probably), but the titular character of Meg Davis’s 1975 song “Captain Jack and the Mermaid.”
Off Centaur: The first filk music publishing house, Off Centaur Publications produced much of the early commercially-released filk albums, thus making filk available outside of a convention/fandom setting for the first time. They were the third of the three initial 1995 inductees into the Filk Hall of Fame. OCP was founded by Jordin Kare, Catherine Cook, and...
Teri Lee: Who went on to found Firebird Arts & Music, one of the more active filk publishers working today.
Making love in zero-G: A recurring topic in filk songs, including “Home on LaGrange,” and most notably, “A Reconsideration Of Anatomical Docking Maneuvers In A Zero-Gravity Environment, or The Zero-G Sex Song,” the latter being the most direct reference given its first line.
Filthy Pierre: Erwin “Filthy Pierre” Strauss was one of the prime movers in early filk on the East Coast of the US in the 1970s, creating some of the first songbooks, lists of top songs to know, and a lot of filk evangelism. To this day his melodica is a recurring feature at larger East Coast and world-level conventions. Pierre was inducted into the Filk Hall of Fame in 1998.
Longcor: Michael “Moonwulf” Longcor has been a major figure in Midwestern filk since the 1970s; he has no fewer than ten published music albums, was twice King of the Middle Kingdom of the SCA, and was inducted into the Filk Hall of Fame in 2014.
Black market Tullamore: Tullamore Dew, a brand of Irish whiskey, was Bob Asprin’s preferred drink (because it was cheap, or so the story goes), a preference that he passed on to the Dorsai Irregulars and filk community both. “Tully” is a commonly mentioned in songs about the DI, about filk itself, or about alcohol.
Juanita Coulson: Filker since the 1950s and still going strong, Juanita was one of the earliest filk encouragers, welcoming and encouraging new people to filk circles. She had several early OCP albums, brought Martha Keller’s (see above) poetry to the attention of many filkers, and was inducted into the Filk Hall of Fame in 1996.
Red Lions: Red Lion Hotels (now bought and owned by Doubletree) were the sites of many filk conventions, especially in the Pacific Northwest.
Badges marked with Dandelions: Kathy Mar (see below) and Lindy Sears founded the “Dandelion Conspiracy” to encourage general SF conventions to be filk-friendly and to push back against the somewhat unsavory reputation of filkers among conrunners. In Kathy’s words:  “In taking the dandelion as the filker's symbol, I hope to convey, as gently as the flower-power movement did, that filk is almost impossible to root out. If disturbed, it tends to proliferate. It can be beneficial at times, and it can even be beautiful in spite of its weedy reputation.”
Dorsai have a Fan Club!: At the Worldcon in Toronto in 1973, various security-type duties were the purview of local rent-a-cops, who...did not mesh well with fan culture, and more critically, did not understand fan valuation. This especially manifested in their Art Show duties; a very valuable Kelly Freas painting was swiped from the show because the rent-a-cop checking receipts didn’t know enough about the painting to realize that the receipt he was being shown did not nearly cover the value of the painting the thief was claiming to have bought. Bob Aspirin (see above) decided that Something Must Be Done, and formed an organization by fans, for fans, and of fans to do various convention-running duties on a by-contract basis. He named them the Dorsai Irregulars, a reference to the Childe Cycle of boks by Gordon R. Dickson about a planet of mercenaries, the Dorsai. (The joke being, if the “regular” Dorsai were off fighting in battles, doing con security was definitely a job for the “Irregular” Dorsai.) As mentioned above, the celebration of the Dorsai’s establishment was a watershed moment for filk, and to this day many Dorsai veterans are Midwestern filkers and vice versa.
Jello in the bathtub!: At the 1974 Worldcon in DC, Joe Haldeman (presumably, hopefully, jokingly) remarked that his ultimate sexual fantasy involved a bathtub full of green jello. By the end of the con, his bathtub had been jello-ed, with a couple of naked girls for, ahem, flavor. (Or perhaps texture.) The incident got inevitably filked about, though not many of those appear to be available online.
Don’t set the cat on fire (and the rest of the chorus): A four-line version of Frank Hayes’s (see below) “Never Set the Cat on Fire” (lyrics here).
Peter Beagle: Writer of The Last Unicorn (novel and screenplay) and numerous other works; also a filker himself, with an album (cassette, of course) of his live performance at Baycon 1986.
Consonance: Bay Area filk convention since at least 1992, probably longer.
Chili cursed with sentience: Beware of the Sentient Chili by Chris Weber (lyrics here).
HOPSFA: The Johns Hopkins SF club. They put out a filkbook, the HOPSFA Hymnal, in the 70s.
NESFA: The New England Science Fiction Association. They put out the NESFA Hymnal in the 70s, too.
ConChord: A filk convention held in the LA area starting in the early 80s, and closing its doors in the 2010s due to low attendance.
The Pegasus Award: The main community award (think the Hugo Award equivalent) for filkers, given out annually at the Ohio Valley Filk Fest (OVFF) every fall since the late ‘80s.
PFNEN: A fanzine (see above) called Philk-Fee-Nom-Ee-Nom, published by Paul Willett in the ‘80s. It was nominated for a Hugo in 1984.
Ose: A common musical style of filk, for sad, depressing stuff. The joke being it’s “ose, ose, and more ose!” (As in, “morose.”) Since a lot of the folk music tradition is similarly depressing, it was inevitable.
Amway: OK, I’ll admit, I’m not 100% on this one. I suspect it’s how “Amway salesman” could be considered one of the most mundane of mundanities, as in Roberta Rogow’s song “A Use for ‘Argo,’” but that’s all I got.
Talk Like a Pirate Day: The “holiday” on September 19 every year, wherein people, well, talk like pirates. Tom Smith, see below, wrote the official Talk Like a Pirate Day Song in 2003 see here.
Dandelion Digitals: Since the Dandelion Conspiracy (see above) was a thing, it’s no shock that a label called Dandelion Digital would spring up. They put out some of the first filk CDs in the ‘90s.
Julia Ecklar and the gulls: Julia Ecklar is a very well-known filker, one of Off Centaur’s (see above) most prolific artists; she has nine Pegasus Awards (see above) and also won the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer in 1991. By all accounts, she has a fondness for birds--if I’m reading this right she works at the National Aviary in Pittsburgh. Beyond that, I’m not sure about the gulls.
Bob Laurent: Californian filker and fan; he founded Wail Songs in the ‘80s to distribute tapes of live convention recordings, and also founded Consonance (see above) and Interfilk (see below). He was inducted into the Filk Hall of Fame in 1996.
Asimov: Isaac Asimov, to be precise, one of the Golden Age of Science Fiction’s most famous writers. He didn’t coin the word “robot” but you’d believe he had. He also, inevitably, wrote a couple of filksongs himself back in the day.
Jeff and Maya Bohnhoff: Californian musicians and filkers with a half dozen albums (see here), a recording setup to help other filkers record quality albums, a couple of Pegasus Awards--and Maya’s an SF writer in her own right with an impressively long bibliography.
Rocky Horror Muppet Shows: There really are no words. Just a link. Written by Tom Smith (see below) and performed a couple of time, originally in 1987 and twice more in the 2010s
Frank Hayes feeling indisposed: Frank Hayes is yet another leading light of filk. He wrote the infectiously upbeat “Never Set the Cat on Fire” (see above) as well as many other songs, but he’s most known for Frank Hayes Disease: that is, forgetting his words. And causing other filkers to forget theirs. (It’s been known to happen that someone will borrow his guitar and suddenly forget lyrics they’ve had cold for decades.) Frank was inducted into the Filk Hall of Fame in 2009 and is married to Teri Lee (see above).
Bill Sutton DIY: Bill Sutton is a filker from Indiana; he and his wife Brenda have a couple of albums. Bill’s most famous song is “Do It Yourself,” which he describes as “a vintage song about vintage computing.” (“You can build a mainframe from the things you find at home,” it proclaims.)
Marischiello goodbye: Bill Marischiello was inducted into the Filk Hall of Fame in 1996...but had died in 1986. (I’m sure it’s this because this is chronological, as see…)
Challenger!: Space Shuttle Challenger, as you’re probably aware, broke apart on liftoff in January 1986. The song “Fire in the Sky” by Jordin Kare (see below) is largely about that and the other successes and failures of the Space Program.
Final tour! What else must we all endure?: This reads like fluff that rhymes, to me.
We saw the sky on fire (and the rest of the chorus): As mentioned above, this is all based on Jordin Kare’s “Fire in the Sky.”  (Link is to the version on the album To Touch the Stars.)
Kathy Mar: Cofounder of the Dandelion Conspiracy (see above), part of the second annual induction into the Filk Hall of Fame in 1996, winner of seven Pegasus Awards, and yet another of Those Names.
Next Gen: As established, this is chronological, so we’re into the late ‘80s. Star Trek: The Next Generation premiered in 1987.
Tullamore is back again: I can’t find confirmation of this, but I seem to recall hearing that Tully was hard to find for a few years in the ‘80s thanks to the Troubles.
Steve Macdonald: “Smac,” as he is affectionately known, is a member of the Dorsai Irregulars (see above), a 2006 inductee in the Filk Hall of Fame, winner of six Pegasus Awards, once administrator of the same to great effect, and is known as Gallamor the Bard at Renaissance Faires.
Elfquest: The legendary long-running comic book fantasy epic is one of those properties that filkers seem to really be fond of. There’s been an album of Elfquest filk, a songbook of filk about Elfquest, and, well, see for yourself.
Interfilk funds a guest: Interfilk, founded in 1992, is an organization dedicated to the cross-pollenation of filk, by paying to send filkers to conventions in other regions. They are a registered nonprofit, and most filk cons do an auction of donated goods (rare music, songbooks, knick-knacks, food, drink…) to raise money.
Tom Smith: The World’s Fastest Filker, fourteen-time Pegasus Award winner (and 34-time nominee), 2005 inductee into the Filk Hall of Fame. Along with “Rocket Ride,” his paean to the Golden Age of Science Fiction, his most famous song is...
307 Ale: ...the story of a few MIT geeks who managed to brew beer inside of a tesseract and got a liquid that’s 153.5% alcohol--that is, it has a proof of 307. (He saw 307 ALE on a license plate and ran with it.)
Lee Gold: California SF fandom, publisher of the filk zine (see above) Xenofilkia since 1988 (and still going). Inducted into the Filk Hall of Fame in 1997 and publisher of several posthumous filk collections (that is, collections of deceased filkers’ work; she’s still alive).
Heather Dale: Filk by way of the SCA, officially a Celtic bard-style performer with something like 20 albums to her name. She’s been at numerous filk conventions, won four Pegasus Awards, been nominated for another four.
Phoenyx, Keepers of the Flame: Celtic fusion rock band Phoenyx, founded by Heather Alexander (see below), had one album, “Keepers of the Flame.” Long out of print.
Filkontario’s Hall of Fame: The Filk Hall of Fame, mentioned extensively here; inductions happen at FilkOntario (FKO), an annual filk con--guess where.
Echo’s Children: Filk duo Echo’s Children, Cat Faber and Callie Hills, four-time nominees for Pegasus Awards for performance; Cat won seven times for writing/composing or individual songs. In addition to several songs about various tabletop RPGs they were in, and a few about other media, a lot of their songs are about…
Bab-5: Babylon 5, the TV show created by J. Michael Straczynski, which was doing long-form arc storytelling in the mid-90s in syndication. Besides Echo’s Children, a few other filkers have done songs about it; Tom Smith (see above) did a whole-show summary to the tune of Barenaked Ladies’ “One Week.”
Need a fool to feed the drive: “Fool to Feed the Drive” by Jordin Kare (see above) is a refilk of “Fuel to Feed the Drive” by Cynthia McQuillin--McQuillin being a multiple-Pegasus award winner herself and 1998 Filk Hall of Fame inductee. “Fuel,” the original, is a sad elegy about a spaceship that runs out of fuel in deep space, doomed. “Fool” points out that fusion drives use water, and humans are mostly water…
Hamlet done by John Woo: Oh, Andrew...this is a bit of self-promotion from the writer of this song, Andrew Ross. Andrew was nominated for a 2011 Pegasus Award for his song “Crispy Danish,” which is, well, a retelling of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark as a John Woo film, set to “Sheep Marketing Ploy” by Tom Smith (see above).
Marilisa Valtazanou: Oh, that’s why--he needed something to rhyme! Marilisa has been nominated for over a dozen Pegasus awards, alone or as part of a group, and helps run the annual UK Filk Convention.
GaFilk: The start of the filking New Year, GAFilk is held the first full weekend of the year in Atlanta, GA (hence the name). One of the more well established filk cons.
Urban Tapestry: Canadian filk trio of Debbie Ridpath Ohi, Allison Durno, and Jodi Krangle; they’ve won two Pegasus Awards and released three albums, and were inducted into the Filk Hall of Fame in 2011.
Lives rich in fantasy: “Rich Fantasy Lives,” by Tom Smith (see above) and Rob Balder, is in contention for “Filk anthem” with “Hope Eyrie” (see above) and its ilk. It celebrates the joy of having more worlds than one to visit on occasion. Best sung in a crowd.
Airwalls down at Orycon!: OK, this one I can only go off of what @jenroses said: “The Airwalls at Orycon was one of those legendary disasters that ended up sparking the best filk circle I’ve ever been at.”
Firebells at Baycon!: This one got filked by Bob Kanefsky (see below): it’s the mostly-true story of a massive problem at Baycon in 2002. The fire alarms kept going off. Every five minutes or so.
All night.
We didn’t start a fire (and the rest of that chorus): See above. “Kanefin’” refers to Bob Kanefsky, considered one of the grandmasters of the refilk. 2007 Pegasus Award winner for Writer/Composer and nominee for specific songs, Bob has a legendary habit of taking one song by a singer, and rewriting the lyrics (often to make it another song by that same singer)...and then convincing the original singer to sing the filk--he got verbed. To Kanef is to sing your mashup-filk parody of a specific filker’s work at said filker. He has several albums of just that. One of the greatest parodists in filk.
Blake Hodgetts, Proteins: Filker Blake Hodgetts, two-time Pegasus Award nominee for writing, has a song called “Proteins” which is a sci-fi version of one of those cowboy ballads about a cowboy who meets a Mexican girl, they get together briefly, share no language, spend the night, then they part...in his version, it’s an alien, and our lonely singer remembers too late that biochemistry mismatches can lead to anaphylactic shock...
Vixy, Tony, Thirteen: Filk duo Vixy and Tony from the Pacific Northwest, two-time Pegasus winners; their first album was “Thirteen,” and at time of writing was their only album. (Their second came out in 2016.)
Stone Dragons: Canadian filk duo of Tom and Sue Jeffers. Tom was inducted into the Filk Hall of Fame in 2012.
Moxie: Play it with Moxie is the nine-member “house band” at GAFilk (see above), which plays the annual GAFilk Banquet.
NOTE: These next two pieces discuss trans individuals, and use their “deadnames”--the names they went by before transition. In both cases, the individuals are public about their transitions and former names, so I am given to understand that this is not considered a breach of etiquette.
If it is, I apologize and will edit the post.
Zander: Zanda Myrande describes herself as “still recovering from the trauma of being Zander Nyrond for several decades,” but still gives “ house room to Zander and the rest of the deadbeats who populate her head.” Zanda is a UK filker, two-time Pegasus Award winner, and writer of the song that UK filk has claimed as their own anthem, “Sam’s Song.”
Heather into Alexander: Celtic musician and filker Alexander James Adams, the Faerie Tale Minstrel, describes himself as “the Heir to Heather Alexander,” who went to the lands of Faerie (thus invoking the “Changeling Child” tale). He has a handful of Pegasus Awards, and wrote the archetypal song of battle, “March of Cambreadth.”
Bill and Gretchen, dead mouse: Bill and Gretchen Roper, filkers from the Midwest, literally own the domain filker.com. Bill has three Pegasus Awards, one with Gretchen; that one is for “My Husband, the Filker,” and includes a snippet about a dead mouse to the tune of “Our House” by Crosby, Stills, and Nash.
Alligators in the house: Filk about exactly what it sounds like. Written by Betsy Tinney (see below) and performed by Betsy, Alexander James Adams (see above), and S.J. Tucker as Tricky Pixie.
ConFlikt: A relatively new filk convention in the Pacific Northwest, foudned 2007.
Judi Filksign: Judi Miller is a talented filker, singer, and musician in her own right, but is primarily known in filk as an ASL translator. Many filk concerts see her at the side of the stage, signing the songs. She won the Pegasus Award for Best Performer in 2006 and was inducted into the Filk Hall of Fame in 2007.
Tragedy at East Hill Mine: “The Wreck of the Crash of the Easthill Mining Disaster” by Brooke Abbey (formerly Brooke Lunderville), a Canadian pharmacist and filker.
Mary Crowell: That’s Dr. Mary Crowell to you, punk! Dr. Crowell is a piano, composition, music theory, and music appreciation professor from Alabama, a four-time Pegasus winner (including once with Play It with Moxie, see above) with another dozen-plus nominations, has two albums and major parts on several more, and is one of filk’s roving accompanists; she can provide a piano backing on the fly.
Faerieworlds: A music festival in Oregon, which has featured a number of filk musicians, including S.J. Tucker and Alexander James Adams (see above) both individually and as Tricky Pixie (also see above).
Brony boys: A lot of fandom subcultures develop their own filk; Harry Potter has Wizard Rock, Doctor Who has Time Lord Rock, and yes, My Little Pony has its own filk. (Note: This was written before “Brony” stopped being considered anything except a warning sign of the Sad Puppies and the like. Look that one up yourself if you want, this is long enough as is.)
Wicked Girls: The fourth album of filker and author Seanan McGuire, six-time Pegasus Award winner. Wicked Girls was the first single-artist filk album to be nominated for a Hugo Award (To Touch the Stars, see above, did it earlier but was multi-artist), for Best Related Work in 2012. “Wicked Girls Saving Ourselves,” shortened to “Wicked Girls,” is also the central track of the album.
Britain’s Talis Kimberley: Talis Kimberley, UK filker and activist, has been nominated for 32 Pegasus Awards and won 9, released over a dozen albums, and was inducted into the Filk Hall of Fame in 2014.
Seanan’s Kellis-Amberlee: Under her open pseudonym of Mira Grant, Seanan McGuire (see above) wrote the Newsflesh series, in which a manmade virus called Kellis-Amberlee causes zombification upon death.  (The similarity to the sound of Talis’s name is a coincidence.)
Doubleclicks: A nerd-rock duo--they they don’t self-identify as filkers, but they’re well regarded and friends with many Pacific Northwest filkers.
Browncoats: The organized fandom for Firefly, densely populated with filkers.
Cats: One of the most common subjects of filksongs that aren’t actually about fantasy or science fiction.
FuMP: The Funny Music Project, a loose affiliation of comedy musicians that has considerable overlap with the filk community (including Tom Smith and the Great Luke Ski, among others).
Toy Boat: Toyboat, a hard-rock filk band from the Midwest.
Release the Cello: An album by filker and cellist Betsy Tinney (see above).
Sasquon: Sasquan, the 2015 World Science Fiction Convention, which was the current con when this song was written.
Thor: The God of Thunder, Mighty Thor! This probably refers more to the Leslie Fish song, though--she was doing that sort of thing before the Marvel Cinematic Universe made that version a household name.
Pass another Tullamore: Tullamore Dew (see above).
for the longest bardic: At filksings, “bardic” refers to a style of turn-taking in which the opportunity to sing and/or play (or, in some variations, request a song of someone else) progresses around the circle in order.  This contrasts with “chaotic”, a style in which there are no set turns and anybody can request to perform next.

Chapter 1 - He who was named V.
| Prologue | 2 |
Member - Taehyung x reader , Jungkook x reader
Genre - Angst, Fluff, (future) smut
Warnings - none for this chapter
Word count - 6,196
Summary -  A mysterious person who writes on your skin, an interesting co-worker who is making his way into your heart. A man whose past you need to know and a man who needs to understand your present. In a  journey that takes you beyond the boundaries of time, sanity and love, you are left torn between choices to make and decisions to take.
And no. Not everything was about love. It was also about destiny.
[A/N] - I fused the original chapters 1 and 2 in this and changed 2 not-so-important character as well ( I’m sorry!)
Tumblr media
“Happy birthday Y/N!”
You turned to see your colleague throwing you a wide smile as he walked through the office doors, hands filled with files. The inner you rolled her eyes as you feigned a smile and nodded at him once. He frowned, not pleased at your reaction, expecting a thanks or atleast a smile that was genuine, but of course you weren’t genuine. You would’ve been if it was your birthday today.
Exactly a month had passed since your birthday, and not one person at your workplace seemed to know that. Honestly, it was because of that stupid staff board up on the wall by the entrance that you thought was a pretty interesting concept when you joined the company. Every employees name, their birthday, their zodiac sign, things they like and things they hate, were neatly written down on post it notes and displayed for everyone to see. It was a great way for everyone to know a bit about the each other before formally introducing themselves.
Or so you thought, until the board in charge messed up your birthday by somehow adding an additional month to it and now everyone in the office assumed the happy day was today. Since the morning, you had received countless wishes and a half a dozen questions about when you were throwing that party everyone was waiting for, but you simply laughed it away. You had no interest in treating such shallow people for anything.
The last one year you  worked here, you had assumed that by going to all these parties, dinners, clubs, karaokes together, you had made an admirable set of friends. But only today did you realize how limited to social life those relationships were. The fact that something as simple as your birthday was not known by anyone made it clear that they had no interest in extending their relationship with you to your personal life, and so you had no interest in investing time or money in friendships that were pretenses. Life had given you enough experience, that you learnt to endure only human relationships that were genuine. Half friendships were not your cup of tea.
You flipped through the many files scattered on your table, immersed in the drawings and fabrics and notes, your reading glasses perched on your nose. You had so many assignments coming up, not to mention the contract you received a few days back from client who seemed to have at least 9 digits in his bank balance. After all, this person’s house was three stories big and he wanted every inch of the first two floors redecorated to suit a more vintage taste. Of course your boss knew vintage was your specialty, so he assigned this client to you and as much as you were grateful for it, it was strenuous. It needed lot of planning and coordination of colors, patterns and things of that sort. You still had a months time till you would start the project but you were worried, refining your ideas again and again trying to reach perfection.
“So, what is the best interior designer in the town up to today?”
Color rising up your cheeks, you turned around at the voice. Not very far behind you, leaning against the table was Jeon Jungkook, his hand casually drumming the edges, his smile at you, making your heart race. You felt a little stupid. Sure Jungkook was super good looking, extremely charming and incredibly sweet but that didn’t mean you had to behave like a hopeless drooling teenage girl looking at her crush, every time you saw him. You forced your eyes to not roam over his body which was clad in a blue jeans and a very see through white shirt today. He was standing against the light moreover which was easily outlining his chiseled body. Surely it was made of at least 6 packs of abs, if not more. He dyed his hair you noticed, to a shade much darker, matching the color of his brown eyes now. He was so good looking, it hurt.
It had been about a month since he joined the office. 29 days to be exact. You remembered it well because he had joined the day just after your birthday and you had secretly thanked the universe for such a wonderful visual treat as a late birthday present. Since then he was constantly taking you aback with the compliments he dropped from time to time and the way he smiled at you from his table across the room. He would often buy coffee for the staff when you guys stayed up late, his ideas and creativity was amazing, his dedication to his job was impressive. You were convinced that there was literally nothing that could exist on this planet more perfect than Jeon Jungkook. And this perfect man, you rarely had an exchange of pleasantries with till now, was calling you the best interior designer? Wow.
“Best interior designer? When did that happen?” you tried to cover your overly happy self with an amused look.
“A few minutes ago, when the boss assigned me as an assistant to you for that vintage clients project. I figured things would be easier for me if I earned some brownie points by buttering you a little.”
You laughed at that. Though yes, he was good looking, this was what you liked about him. Nothing he did was a pretense and if it was, he didn’t hide it. He wasn’t afraid about voicing his opinion, he was genuine with people, something you had been seeing less and less in the world as you grew. Maybe that was what made you feel so attracted to him.
You were about to reply to that with something smart when another somebody walked by loudly cutting the not so awkward silence between the two of you,
“Happy birthday Y/N!”
Annoyed, you gave a sigh and turned slowly with another plastered fake smile on your face, clearly explaining your thoughts about this whole wishing thing. Jungkook seemed to be the only one who got the sarcasm behind your smile.
“Frustrating isn’t it? When people give this air that they care a lot about you, when really they don’t actually give a damn?” He watched as the confused colleague disappear behind his table. You looked at him surprised.
“What do you mean?”
“That it’s not your birthday but everyone is wishing you so sincerely which means, no one really cares. I mean if they truly did, they would have known it’s not today right?”
“How do you know? That it’s not my birthday? I don’t think I’ve ever told you.” you narrowed your eyes at him curiously.
“Well” He propped himself up on the table, bearing the weight on his hands. “I figured that your birthday and your zodiac sign on the staff board don’t really match, so one of them was for sure wrong and didn’t know which one. Your expression just now, sort of confirmed it was the birthday that was wrong.” He shrugged in a matter of fact tone.
Whatever he said or he noticed wasn’t even a big deal, but it gave you jitters all over. Did the fact that he actually put together that your birthday and zodiac sign don’t match, mean that he thought about you? Why else could he possibly notice such a small detail? Jeon Jungkook was going to make you melt into a puddle one day with all the heat he caused inside you.
“Nice observation assistant. This definitely earns you some brownie points.” Your smile at him was growing wider at his beautiful laughter in response.
“When was it though?” Cocking his head he let the sunlight behind him hit your eye, blinding you a little.
“Exactly a month ago. Same date.”
“Ah. That would mean I missed it by a couple of days maybe? It’s been less than a month since I’ve been here.....”
You nodded, telling him he’s right when he straightened out, his eyes shining with a sort of excitement.
“Then we should do something about it. I’m probably the only one in the office who knows your birthday isn’t today right? and I missed the real occasion a month back? Plus, today we both found out we are going to be working on a project together. So as a combined celebration we,” he shifted a little uncertainly. “should go out for a coffee.”
You blinked a couple of times stupidly and not because of the sunlight forcing its way into your eyes anymore. Did Jeon Jungkook just ask you for a date? For a coffee? Sure he didn’t say it was a date but it was kind of the same thing right?
The only problem was that it was a coffee date and you hated coffee. As much as you wanted to spend time with him beyond the office boundaries, you really didn’t think you could sit and pretend to like and enjoy it. Especially when you knew that both of you hated pretenses. A crush on him couldn’t make you a hypocrite right?
“Honestly Jungkook I would love to but the thing is I don’t -”
“Like coffee?”
You raised an eyebrow in surprise and he pointed at the board.
“That is the only thing that tells me the little I know about you.”
Coffee, lack of punctuality and pretenses. Those were the three things you had listed as things you hate. All three of which you seemed to be getting today. But you mentally take note that Jungkook remembered this detail about you as well and continued,
“Ah yeah. I don’t really find what is so appealing about the bitterness.” you said shaking your head
“It’s bitter but still addicting. It’s the same idea behind alcohol I guess.” he shrugged. “Then how about chocolate? I know this new shop that opened downtown and I heard the hot chocolate there is killer.”
Suppressing a smile at his attempt to find alternatives you leaned back with the most casual expression on your face “Well luckily chocolate is something I love.”
“Cool! so shall we go after work then? I need to go out to collect some fabric samples from around there anyway and I should be done only by 6. Do you think you can reach around the same time?”
“yeah sure.” you mentally kicked the screaming inner you. “I shall see you there at 6.”
He smiled like he was more relaxed now. You didn’t notice till the stiffness left his body that he was actually quite nervous. Were you making Jeon Jungkook nervous? Was this even possible?
“I should give you the address. It’s a bit hard to find if you don’t know the exact location.” he fished a pen from his pocket looking at you for a paper, making you search for a spare sheet on your table in the sea of office related material. Giving up the useless quest you held out your hand pointing at your palm and he smiled taking it, scribbling a couple of words on it.
“Well I’ll try to be on time. Hopefully the dealer doesn’t delay me. I shall see you later alright?”
He slid off the table and turned to leave when you called out to him again looking up from the words on your palm. “Hey Jungkook, if you are doing this just for those brownie points sake then you really don’t have to you know.” The place he wrote seemed to be a bit of an expensive one. You could tell he was one of those who would absolutely insist to pay for you and you didn’t know if it was alright to let him do that when you barely knew each other.
“Who said it was just for that?” he winked, giving you a cheeky smile and walking away. You were shocked that you lip was bleeding yet with all the biting of it to suppress your excited smile. Oh god, this man was definitely going to be the end of you.
Looking left and right you tried to figure out where exactly this cafe was. You lost the address Jungkook gave but you kind of remembered the name of the street. It was almost 6 already and you hated being late. You tried asking some of the passerbys if they know the shop but no one really seemed to have the patience to answer you. Consequently, you were standing at the same spot the last 15 minutes, still trying to figure out what to do.
But you felt weird. There was this constant feeling that someone had their eyes on you the whole time, watching your every move. It was stupid of course. Everyone around you was hurrying back home looking forward to the long weekend ahead. No one even had time to stop and look at you, stalking you was out of question. But you couldn’t help get the feeling that there was someone who was definitely following you. But who?
Annoyed at the lack of conclusion you were getting about everything, you decided to walk ahead and see if you could find the cafe when someone gripped your wrist from behind, spinning you around to reveal his face.
“It’s this way Y/N. where are you going?”
You breathed a sigh of relief at the sight of Jungkook. “Oh thank god you’re here. I was this close to going mad. I sort of lost the address you gave. I think it washed away when I cleaned my hands after lunch.” you looked down a little embarrassed at your carelessness. Jungkook wasn’t bothered and gave you his trademark sweet smile.
“That’s okay, Good thing I found you then? It’s this way. come on.”
He held you by the hand and walked down the street turning left and you noticed that he didn’t let you go till you reached the cafe which was a good whole 10 minutes later. Walking in, the two of you found a small comfortable corner, far from the busy streaming crowd by the window and took it immediately. It was a nice place. Warm, cozy, just right for a pleasant conversation. And since you were both interior designers the first thing you talked about of course was the ambience and the decor. He was an easy person to make a conversation with and It had been days since you had such a nice company.
“Can I take your order please?
The voice triggers your memory and you turned at the familiarness to see Jackson standing there in an apron with a small notebook.
“Y/N?” “Jackson?”
As the both of you stared pleasantly surprised at each other presence, you didn’t notice Jungkook’s eyes flicker between the two of you with not expression on his face.
“Hey babe, it’s been long isn’t it? Never thought I’d see you in my shop”
Slowly detaching Jackson from your view you shifted it on Jungkook who looked impassive and then back to the man standing next to you, a bit bothered that Jungkook had to hear Jackson call you babe, but you were more surprised that Jackson called this his shop.
“Wow Jackson, you own this place?”
“Yeah” He grinned feeling proud of himself. “Me and my girlfriend opened  about 2 months back. Business has been great so far. You can see, the place is pretty packed.”
“Jackson that’s amazing! I’m so happy for you.” and you really were. Though Jackson and you weren’t quite close, you knew he was a really good person and he deserved the happiness he was getting.
“Thanks babe. Now, what can I get you two?”
Jungkook quickly sat up speaking this time. “A frappe mocha for me and a hot chocolate with whipped cream for the birthday girl.” he smirked at you making you glare at him not so threateningly.
“Oh really? Happy birthday Y/N!” Jackson shook your hand vigorously “My my, aren’t you at the right place today then? Your order is on the house tonight. Have fun guys!” And he hurried away not giving you a chance to protest.
“Really Jungkook?” you shot him an exasperated look.
“Looks like even you ex didn’t know it wasn’t your birthday today.” he leaned back shaking his head.
“My ex? What are you talking about. He’s not my ex.” you told him amused.
“Really?” he frowned confused. “But he was calling you babe and it seemed like…”
“Jackson calls everyone babe to be honest. Probably even calls his parents that. We just….know each other.”
You had met Jackson back in your college days at the club. He was a chilled guy, it was a crazy night and you both hit off in a way two needy young adults normally would. After that night you met up a couple of times and it was fine with you two because neither of you were looking for a relationship. Then apparently he met a girl he wanted to date and it wouldn’t have been right to keep seeing you, so you guys ended things amicably. Jungkook, didn’t need to know all these details. But he definitely seemed more relaxed now that you cleared this for him.
And he was right. The hot chocolate was good stuff. That and a funny conversation with Jungkook were really making this evening enjoyable until he was interrupted by a client’s call which he had to take. While he spoke immersed in his conversation, you casually looked outside the cafe, scanning the busy crowd walking by the window on the other side of the room.
And your eyes met his.
He was standing exactly in the center of the view, the crowd pouring in and around him while he was looking straight at you, his gaze not wavering, eyes not blinking. And the word beautiful seemed like an understatement when it came to him.
The young man wore a black turtle neck that was reaching his sharp jaw with his hands tucked in his black trousers. His brown hair was decorated with shades of green, the tousled griminess promising finesse. Strong arched brows, thick eyelashes  distinct cheekbones - all made him look so devilishly handsome. And then his eyes - they were deep and catastrophic, a dark chocolate brown mimicking the drink in your hand, giving a gaze hot enough to make you feel a burn in your chest. Even from this far, you could see the flecks of golden in his eyes.
But there was something odd about him. He seemed angelic not just because his face seemed to mimic the heavens but because he looked so ageless and aged all at once. His pale flawless skin, his pink lips that enhanced his face, his hazel irises, all made you feel like you were looking at a timeless beauty. He was beyond beautiful.
But who was he and why was his sight so fixed on you? He couldn’t be….him?
You look involuntarily at your hands that were warm maybe because of the drink you were having. Was it him? The one who spoke to you on your skin?
You remembered that day, about 2 weeks after your birthday when you had finally got the courage to write him your questions. Who are you? What is your name? And it was on this very hand that he wrote the answer to that. He replied with a letter. A single letter.
V.
Was this him? The one who called himself V? Could this be the one who was a stranger yet not foreign to you?
You snapped out of your thoughts. You had to see him. You had to see him again but when raised your head and looked towards the window,
He was gone.
The sound of dripping water woke you in the middle of the night, your movements forming huge shadows on the walls of your house in the dim light of the candles. You rolled your shoulders that were stiff from lying over the dining table, slowly realizing that it was raining. Oh god. You got up swiftly and rushed to the bathroom to grab a bucket. If the rain got heavier, water would soon leak through that rotten crack in your roof and that, could potentially flood your house. You placed the red plastic pail under the crevice so it could collect the rain that had a countless number of times partially submerged your house with it’s cold waters. You mentally made up your mind the fourth time this week to give an earful to the owner for still not fixing the crack.
It was high time you moved to a new place. Just a year of living here and you were already sick of it. The freezing rainwater, the howling of the dogs at night, the noise of the train that passed by every half an hour - every sound would relentlessly bang against your eardrums, frustrating your every cell. But you couldn’t move from here. You didn’t earn much as an interior designer and you still had to pay off your college student loans. After setting aside the loan amount and the rent you paid for this place, you were left with hardly enough to cover your daily expenses. Since there were no resources to help you move to a more decent place, until you got a better job, this was where you had to survive.
Maybe after that big shots contract things could change. You looked at all the material spread out on your dining table, lit by candles in the sudden absence of electricity in your neighborhood. It was such a huge project, you even dedicated your weekends to it these days. Surely it would get you a bonus or maybe some extra commission after this was over. Maybe then you could at least get the crack fixed.
You were pretty excited about the project. Obviously because as an interior designer, a 3 story house would be one of your biggest challenges but also it enabled you to spend the entire of last week with Jungkook. You both were to come up with the ideas for redesigning the house and then create a presentation to show the client and get his approval. By now you had hardly finished designing the massive living room area. There was a long way to go with your new assistant on this project.
Jungkook was great to work with. He was imaginative and your tastes matched really well. Even if you disagreed about certain things you both would talk it out and resolve it calmly. Most of the time you spoke about work so you rarely got to talk about each other. It was only natural that you often found yourself looking forward to the moments when you ate lunch together or when he dropped you on his bike late at night, the two of you lost in your conversations. Jackson’s cafe had also somehow become your official hangout place. The two of you would land up there almost every evening for some or the other drinks and snacks. Jungkook and Jackson hit off pretty well. You also met Jackson’s girlfriend and you were starting to take a liking in her. While you really enjoyed the company of all three of them, that was not why you went to the cafe so often.
It was to see him again.
Ever since that evening in the cafe when you had seen that young man, you had been waiting to catch sight of him just once more. Your memory of him was starting to fade already. Now, a week later, you could remember only what he was wearing and barely seemed to recollect the soft details his face. You had to see him again before it was too late. Before you entirely forgot how he looked. You couldn’t help but wonder if that person was the same one who wrote on your skin. The person to who, from your 24th birthday, you could write back to. And after days of analyzing you thought finally figured out why you could speak to him, what had changed.
You had changed.
When you felt his presence for the first time, on your 8th birthday, one of the most significant days of your life, you had just lost your most significant battle. A drawing competition. Your position today as an interior designer of course stemmed from your passion for art as a child. Drawing contests and art exhibitions were an integral part of your childhood so losing that competition that day had disappointed you much more than you expected it to. The orphanage you grew up in never encouraged art much, so no one was bothered that you were wailing over a simple drawing contest.
But that day as you sat huddled on the bed crying, you saw art better than you had ever seen before. Flowers, designs, strokes of beautiful drawings began forming on your skin. And it was not just that night. Every night since then, some or the other strange pattern appeared on you and you stayed up all night under the faint light of your lamp, copying the intricate shapes in a book. There was a unique pattern to the work. The designs seemed absurd, random and archaic. But there was a beauty in them, a beauty you understood the more and more you looked at them. These designs in fact were the ones that got you your job today. Years ago the designs which gave you comfort for losing a small drawing contest, later became the reason for your first victory in the game of life.
When you were 16, they turned into words for the first time because of Mark. As great as it was being in a relationship with him, that much it hurt after you broke up. That day, Mark the asshole, became your first and last relationship. You were sitting under a tree silently cursing him between your tears, taking apart the birthday card he made for you, filled with messages that didn’t mean what they said, when you felt the tingle on your skin for the first time. And you saw the three words.
Are you okay?
While that should have scared you to death, it didn’t frighten you at all. Rather, even amidst your tears it made you smile. That day you realized, I love you were not the only three words that could make someone’s heart flutter. A simple question like this asked out of concern could warm someone on the inside too.
From then, the writings on your skin became your constant companion, understanding you in ways even you didn’t understand yourself. And Now on your 24th birthday you could write back to he who left these writings, something you could never do before. That meant there was something about the multiples of 8. Each time 8 years passed, something changed. You only wondered what would happen on your 32nd birthday.
You could ask him though. Now that you could talk to him, you could ask him, if he also saw the connection between your age and the link between you both. You could ask him hundreds and thousands of questions now. Questions you had about the world, about the relationship between you two, about him. You could also ask him if the boy outside the cafe really was him but you were scared. What if it was him? What would happen if you know how he looked now? It would mean he was no longer a stranger and something about that made you feel uneasy. The only reason you were able to share your most personal things with him was because he was unknown. Someone who you didn’t know. Someone who couldn’t judge you like the rest of the world. Someone who was there for you without needing you to be there for them.
Knowing who he was meant you were obliged to be concerned about him. It meant you had to be there for him too like he was there for you. It meant you would know more and more about him in the process, and as much as that excited you initially, it was starting to scare you now. What if he wasn’t who you wanted him to be? What if it was better if he was stranger? Rather than being disappointed, you’d rather not know him at all.
But you started to know who he was already and it all began the day you asked him that question…..
How was your day today?
Pretty good. I finally completed that preschool project today so I’m kind of ecstatic. How was yours?
Not very eventful. Nothing in my life is very eventful really.
What is his life? All these years you had only pondered and pondered pointlessly over this question. Even though now you spoke back to him, you somehow never had the chance to ask anything about him. Maybe it was because you were so immersed in just talking about your life all the time, that you never got to ask him about his. But you were determined to know today. Something. Anything about him. So you wrote again.
Listen.
Listening.
There’s something I want to ask you.
What?
Will you answer it though? Something tells me you won’t.
If I have an answer to it, I will.
You took a deep breath, the pen shaking in your hand. This was it. This was the first step you would take to know who this person was. And as much as you were waiting for this moment, you were suddenly afraid. Did you want to know though? How would this change things now? Would this even change things now?
What is your name?
My name?
I always hoped that there would be a day I’d know the name of the man with whom I shared my life all these years.
You assume too quickly sweetheart. I could be a woman for all you know.
You stared at the message too stunned to speak. Well of course, it didn’t have to be a man. Why did you always think it was a man writing to you? Maybe because of the way he portrayed himself? It was not too emotional, always to the point. He never gave too much advice, never seemed to have romantic ideals - whoever this person was definitely felt like a man.
I’m so sorry. Are you a woman then?
For some reason you could feel him laugh on the other side. Strange. You never felt that before.
No. I’m man, that I can tell you. But my name. That I cannot answer, for I don’t have one.
You don’t have a name?
A name is barely a transient word that others use to label you. For someone like me it has no meaning. It changes according to time, place and person.
So for someone like me, what would your name be?
There was a long gap. Your words sunk into your skin but his words didn’t appear. You put your pen aside thinking this was maybe a question you shouldn’t have asked. Maybe as anonymous you wished he would be, that anonymous he wished to stay. But then you felt the tingling sensation again.
V
You walked up to the window of your bedroom feeling the chilly night air on your skin, the droplets of rain running through your fingers. You felt goosebumps rise all over the exposed self that you were barely covering with your night clothes. The moonlight illuminated your pale skin making it look even more ghostly. The sun’s light never fell on you this way.
For the last 16 years, you only appeared in front of another person with every inch of your skin covered. It was crucial to do so, you had no choice. His messages had a mind of their own. They would appear anywhere and everywhere on you. Mostly it was on your hands or arms, but sometimes you woke up in the morning to find your whole body covered with black designs like you were some rebellious teenager gone emo overnight. Or sometimes it was just lines, scratch like marks, as though you were clawed by some strange wild animal. One day you even woke up to see poems, hundreds of poems, sad, romantic and painful inscribed all over you, but like always, as soon as you read them they sunk in and disappeared, leaving your skin like a fresh parchment waiting for it’s next message.
You had to be cautious all the time to ensure no one saw these words. You couldn’t let people know your secret. The only person who knew it, would never look you in eye since she found out. You were in grade 12 when you had shown your secret to the girl you thought was your best friend for 6 years and the fear she had in her eyes haunted you till today. Whatever was happening with you was not normal but you learnt to live with it and appreciate it. At least there was one person who didn’t fake their concern for you, and however inconvenient it was for you to dress fully covering yourself, a huge part of you was happy to do it.
But you still had some regrets. Not that you blamed him or something but this man V had absolutely ruined some aspects of your life. It was so hard to get clothes that fit in your budget, looked good and covered all of you simultaneously. It was harder to explain to all your tinder dates why even in the hottest of summers you showed up clad in such stuffy clothes, why a one night stand, was strictly at night and only in the dark, why you always left before the they woke up, leaving a simple note that it was an emergency. You had to make up answers for these questions all the time. So many lies that you wondered, if there would ever be a day when you could meet someone with whom you could truly be yourself - open, honest, with all your defenses down, not needing to be scared of anything.
There was only one man you could be yourself in front of. Not Jungkook, not Jackson, but the man who was your biggest secret himself. V. Maybe that’s why it was so important to you to see him. Even though it scared the hell out of you, you wanted to meet him, know him.
While walking back to the work waiting for you on the table, another crazy thought came into your head. You stared at the pen sitting on it for a minute before making up your mind and picking it up, letting your curiosity take over your fear.
Are you awake?
You write and watch as the words linger on your skin for what seems like eternity and then finally sink in replaced by his reply.
Yes, but what are you doing awake at this time?
Thinking.
About?
You.
What about me?
About who you are. Where you live? Who lives with you? If you are alone too like me? I was lucky enough to have someone like you to listen to me my whole life. Did you also have someone for you? There are so many questions I keep thinking.
You should really go to sleep now y/n. It’s getting late.
You should really answer my questions now V. It’s high time.
And what will you do knowing about me?
The same thing you did knowing about me.
I did nothing.
I will do the same then
The knowledge of who I am, is of no use to you.
Well was there any use to you knowing who I am?
God you are stubborn.
Can’t you see it? I think this is how it was decided to be. 16 years after I know you, I’m finally able to tell you whatever I want. I can ask you everything you’ve always left unanswered. I think fate arranged for this with a good intention.
Fate only arranges things for its own amusement. It plays horribly with the lives of people. Don’t fall victim to this. I don’t want you to regret this.
I won’t.
Do you really have to do this Y/N?
You could see his dislike for this conversation through his words. More like you could feel it. Some part of you somehow, somewhere clearly felt all the emotions running through him. He was feeling uncertain, vulnerable, scared. Scared like you felt at the thought of someone getting to know about your secret. He was scared of telling you about him. But now you were no longer scared to listen.
Yes I have to.
You were being brave with him today. Not allowing him to steer the conversation the way he wished, not making you the subject of the discussion. Maybe you were being too hopeful about this. Maybe he wouldn’t even reply-
What do you want to know?
You smiled, relaxing at his words. You could still feel him tensed, his nervous energy radiating off your skin, but you were not going to back off now. Not after coming so far.
Everything.
Everything?
Everything. Everything about you. Like you know about me. I want to know your story.
My story is not something I am proud of.
Why?
No one is proud of a story that begins with a curse.

The Other End of the Bar (part 1?)
“Hey,” one of your friends from your Saturday night crew nudges your arm. “That guy was totally checking you out.” She gestures to your left and you see several men, considering this is the most popular bar near where you live. “You’ve got to be more specific than ‘that guy’, Gretchen,” you raise an eyebrow at her. You’re intrigued because you could have sworn you’d felt some eyes resting on you for the last few minutes. You’ll admit, you do feel pretty delicious tonight; you’re wearing your favorite pair of ripped light washed, high waisted skinny jeans and a long sleeved, off the shoulder maroon shirt. Not to mention the new brown booties you recently caught on sale at your favorite store. And to top it all off, you actually started getting ready on time tonight, so your makeup is A+ and you’re sporting your best dark shade of lipstick. Bottom line? You feel hot. “The sexy ginger in the blue shirt,” she purrs. You let your eyes travel over to the only man with red hair standing in a group of other men around his age, presumably his friends. He has a big grin on his face; one of his friends must’ve just told a pretty funny joke. You notice his teeth and how cute his smile is and only a few seconds later is he looking back at you. You can tell he didn’t expect you to notice him as he looks behind him, sort of in a ‘who, me???’ kind of way. You smile a bit flirtatiously, letting your eyes linger on him a little longer. The man notices the alluring look on your face and, well you’ll be damned, he starts to make his way down to your end of the bar. Gretchen lightly knocks into you, telling you she’s giving you two some privacy before stepping a few feet away and landing at a booth, taking the rest of the group with her. He passes by multiple other gorgeous women to come and talk to little old you! He's not too large, but not too small. He's taller than you, but shorter than most guys -- and he's incredibly attractive. His hair is a colorful, unstyled mop that lies on top of his pale skin. His attire is very casual -- a blue flannel and black jeans, but he looks pretty damn good in it. You set your thoughts (and drink) aside as he comes and sits on the seat directly next to you. “Hi,” he says coyly, and holy shit he has an accent. A British accent. “Hi,” you say back to him, your lips still curled flirtatiously. “I couldn’t help but notice you staring at me from across the room,” he teases you. “So, I decided to come ask -- can I buy you a drink?” This isn’t the first time someone has asked you this very question tonight. Living in the city has taught you a couple things, and one happens to be that pretty girls don’t need to bring money to bars or clubs. Guys (and occasionally girls) that think you’re hot will always be asking to buy you a drink or two, or three. But so, he’s cute and funny? That’s a plus. “Funny, but I’m pretty sure my friend caught you staring at me first. And yes, a drink would be great.” “Damn, I’m caught. I thought I was doing a good job of staring but not really staring,” his face blushes a bit and he smiles bigger, shaking his head. “What can I get you, though?” You tell him your drink and then ginger boy repeats it to the bartender, who politely smiles and pours it up. You thank him, taking a sip from your new glass full of liquor. He just looks at you for a moment, head cocked to the side and a small smile on his face, studying you fondly. It seems like he has questions, but decides to save them for later. Your eyes lock on his beautiful blue ones for what feels like a long while, and you feel tingly and jittery inside. The feeling is so strong it makes you look down, biting your lip while your cheeks flush. “You’re staring again,” you say sipping your drink to try to seem unphased. “I know,” he says confidently. “If I’ve already been caught, what’s the point of trying to hide it anymore?” He’s brave and you like it. “Oh, I guess I should properly introduce myself, how rude of me,” he continues, “I’m Ed, by the way.” You tell him your name and he compliments it, telling you how pretty it is. “You’re a charmer, aren’t you?” you grin. He smiles and shakes his head, “No, no. It’s all genuine.” You glance past your new flame haired friend and look toward his group of buddies. They seem to be all staring at you and Ed, then going back to gossip with one another. “I think your friends are pretty interested in us,” you say, laughing a little through your nose. Ed follows your gaze to the familiar men at the opposite end of the bar. He sighs and rests his head on his left shoulder, clearly annoyed, but not in such a serious way. “Oh, I apologize for my mates,” his face scrunches a bit. Mates? How adorably British of him. “You see, they didn’t think I’d have the balls to actually come talk to you. And now they probably think I’m not going to succeed. You see, since I’m pretty awkward and a bit inept.” “I wouldn’t say that,” you sit up a little straighter and lean closer to Ed. “I’m still talking to you aren’t I? I even let you buy me a drink. And if you’re as interesting as you seem, I’ll let you buy me a couple more.” The both of you laugh, and thankfully, he is interesting, and you hit it off. The conversation of the next hour or so is filled with various laughter and funny things about each other. Like how Ed’s go to karaoke song is Pony by Ginuwine. You also learn cute, small things about each other. Like how Ed grew up in a small town in England called Suffolk and how he’s been passionate about music his whole life. He’s a singer-songwriter and once he gets to talking about his music, it’s like he enters a zone. An adorable zone, to be specific. You ask him what songs he has that are popular, and when he starts listing them, you immediately recognize them. You become amazed that you’re speaking with artist behind some of the songs on your Spotify playlists. Although he is clearly very dedicated to his music, you’re surprised by the fact that he does not brag or boast about any of it. He is an extremely, humbly adorable guy. His face even gets rosy when you congratulate him on his successes. He’s really sweet, and you’re actually kind of glad you ditched your friends to chat with him. You know it’s ridiculous, but you even feel a little sad when he excuses himself to the restroom because you don't want to stop talking. “Well, well, well,” you hear Gretchen sing from behind you a few minutes after Ed walks away. You turn to see her and your other girlfriends with serious smirks on their faces. “I’d be pissed you ditched us tonight, but he’s way too sexy for me to blame you,” your other gal, Nora pokes your arm playfully. “I’m just jealous I’m not getting lucky tonight.” You wave your arms in front of you, “Hey, who said anything about getting lucky? For your information, I’m not interested in sleeping with Ed…” “Tonight,” Gretchen laughs. “You’d be an idiot not to get that at some point. Did you see how he was looking at you, sweetheart?” “Look, he’s really cute, and funny, and charming… and he has really pretty eyes and--” something tells you to stop talking when Gretchen and Nora look behind you, then at each other with a cheshire cat grin. You turn around and see the exact pretty eyes you were just talking about. He looks very satisfied but also a little bashful, a slight smirk on his face. Your gal pals slowly walk away, snickering to each other. “So...” he says, sliding back into his seat and grinning at you uncontrollably. “Cute? Funny and charming?” “Hey, hey. Don’t get too happy,” you can’t help but beam his smile right back at him. “I say that about all the sweet redheads that stare at me from the across the bar.” “Ouch,” he says, clutching his chest. “I thought I was special.” You look at him for a bit, unable to wipe the gushy smile on your face. Without telling it, your hand somehow finds its way to his bicep. It’s more muscular than you thought and you swoon just a bit. “I guess you're maybe a little special.” His eyes fall down to your hand and then dance back up to your eyes. God damn, are they blue. If you were to fall in love with this man, (you’re not saying you will because that’s insane, you met him, like, an hour ago!) his eyes would be the culprit. They’re like big blue oceans full of wittiness, and intelligence, and humbleness, and-- “Do you wanna go out sometime?” It falls out of your mouth-- you literally did not even mean to say it. You don’t want to take it back, but Jesus, wouldn’t it be nice if your mouth would warn you before saying things like that? “I was actually going to ask you that,” he chuckles. “Unfortunately, the next few days will be really busy for me-- I’ve got a shit ton of stuff to do for the new album but… if you give me your number, I would love to call you up when I’m free.” “I love that idea,” you say, grabbing the napkin from under your drink and a pen from your purse. You write down your digits and slide them over to him. He grins at the small white square and takes it, tucking it safely into the pocket of his flannel. You two linger a bit, looking at each other’s lips for a split second, just like in the movies. But, neither of you lean in. It’s like you're caught up in the pre-kiss moment. Ed stands from his stool and says, “I should probably get back to my mates, they look like they want to leave.” He glances back at his tired looking crew, slumped over the bar and exhibiting, overall, no energy. “I enjoyed this, though. Thank you.” “Thank you,” you repeat. He starts to walk away, and you immediately regret not doing something. There has to be some sort of physical interaction at the end, not even necessarily being a kiss. “Wait…” He pauses, his blue beauties looking at you expectantly. You stand from your stool and wrap your arms around his neck, hugging him tightly. When you pull away, he’s left with a glowing smile on his face. “It seemed necessary,” you explain yourself a little shyly. “Not complaining,” Ed shrugs before giving you one last nod and walking back down to the other side of the bar. You watch him walk away and start to feel lonely. He gives off the greatest vibe and it feels so fun and exciting. Now that he's left, it feels very dull. You step down from your stool and make your way to the booth your friends are sitting at. They look at you with surprised, inquisitive looks on their faces. “You were serious about not going home with him,” Gretchen says as you slide into the booth next to her. “I told you I wasn't going to sleep with him tonight,” you say pushing your hair behind your ear. “Tonight,” your friends all repeat at once. You all get into a laughing frenzy, you lightly shove Gretchen. “I did give him my number, though,” you smile. “He said he'll call me when he's free. I just hope he doesn't believe in waiting three days to call because I love talking to him. I actually wouldn't mind if he called me tomorrow.” “Sounds like you like him,” Nora says. You nod, grinning from just thinking about his eyes. “Aw, look behind you!” You crane your neck to see Ed nearly out the door of the bar, turned back around to give you one last wave goodbye. You wave back at him, unable to stop the buzzing feeling inside of you. As he walks out the door, you sigh, already excited for the next time you get to see him again. You and your girls talk the rest of the night away, the subject sometimes drifting back to Ed. You find him clouding your thoughts and you feel something exciting brewing. He'd really better call you soon…

Senior Series: Alex Pt. 1
Alex Miller uses she/her pronouns. She was born in Midland, TX, but has lived in the Houston, TX area, Moscow, Russia, and Cambridge, England, so who knows where she’s from.

What is your major and how did you pick it?
My major is East Asian Studies, and I knew that I wanted to major in it even before coming to Smith—that’s actually one of the reasons I picked Smith, is that this major was available. I started studying Japanese my freshman year of high school, and I knew I wanted to continue with that, but I also wanted to take history classes more than literature classes so I knew that an East Asian Languages & Literatures major was not for me. One of my favorite things about the EAS major is that it’s multi-disciplinary, so there are a lot of cross-listed courses. You can take art history classes, history classes, anthropology classes, government classes, and they can all count towards the major.
Where did you study abroad, and what was that like?
I studied abroad in Kyoto, Japan with the Associated Kyoto Program for my junior year. It was pretty amazing and I had a lot of incredible experiences, thanks to my wonderful host family. The first month was really tough, though, I’m not going to lie! I thought I knew what I was getting myself into, but it turned out I had no clue—my host family was a lot bigger, more lively, and initially overwhelming, than I had been led to expect from the paper from my program telling me who I was going to be living with.
But by the time I got to the end of that first month, I was like “well, if I could handle all that, I can definitely handle the rest of the year.” And I ended up having a really great time. I went to a bunch of rock concerts with my host family and with my friends, and I traveled a lot with my host family, and also with friends. My host mom bought flowers every couple of weeks so we could arrange them together, and we watched music programs on TV together. My friends and I hung out in Kyoto a lot, did a lot of karaoke, and frequented this giant coffee shop with literally hundreds of different parfaits available.
AKP actually provides a significant amount of financial support, from paying for our monthly transportation passes to and from school, to giving us a lunch stipend, to the monthly “cultural activities grant.” All of that allowed me to do more than I probably would have if all that was available to me was my own money. The program also had field trips and events that ensured we got to visit some cool and important places, and try out new things.
Honestly, though, the reason I had such an amazing time studying abroad was my host family. They were all amazing and kind and welcoming, and my host mom and I still message each other. She sends me pictures of her grand-kids every time we talk, and likes to check that I’m not too stressed and am taking time to enjoy myself in college.
I sort of intermittently kept a blog while I was abroad. You can see it here: http://jyakyoto1516.tumblr.com/ and you can also ask me questions through there if you want to!

Have you been involved in any extracurriculars or campus jobs at Smith? Which have been most rewarding to you, and why?
Fall semester of first year, I signed up for a bunch of clubs I never went to, but then in the spring semester I started doing a radio show with my friend Suwei because two of our other friends, Meghan and Siobhan, were having so much fun with their radio show. Sophomore year, I had radio shows both semesters, and I was also an SAA (Student Academic Advisor) for Gardiner, and a liaison for the East Asian Studies department. Junior year I was abroad, and then this year I’ve had a radio show both semesters, I’m the head of the HSECs (House Social Events Coordinators) in Gardiner, I’m a student editor for Global Impressions magazine, and for the spring semester I’ve also been our Social Media Chair.
As for which of these has been most rewarding, I would say all my positions with Gardiner House, and then also being a WOZQ DJ.
Being an SAA my sophomore year I was able to help out incoming first years with figuring out life at Smith, and Bae and I planned some fun events to help build house community—like big-little bonding with silly camp games, including a mummy-making contest, and Floor Wars, complete with a banana-eating contest and crab soccer.
As an HSEC, I’ve continued to create events to try to facilitate the creation of house community and encourage bonds across class years in the house. I’ve worked with five really wonderful firsties to make sure events like Fetish (our fall semester party that usually happens around Halloween), Yule Ball, and March Masquerade have gone smoothly and been special and fun for our housemates. I’ve also organized some smaller events, like the Gardiner Olympics (Floor Wars, but re-branded), a karaoke night, and some movie nights and stuff.
As Social Media Chair I’ve been most focused on starting this blog and creating content for it, and that’s been really fun. I get to learn a lot about my housemates as I interview them for the podcast, or put their interview answers together for a text-post. Making the videos and podcasts takes a lot of time, but I’m also learning some cool skills as I do.
And then lastly, doing radio shows. This is honestly just so much fun. I’ve co-DJed with friends and also DJ-ed alone, and either way, it’s great. WOZQ the organization itself is pretty disorganized and this is what best sums up my reaction to them: -__- But! Every week, I make a two-hour playlist of music I like, and then I get to go down to the booth and play my music over the airwaves to whoever’s listening while I blast it through very nice speakers for myself. A+.
Is there a Smith event, either in the house particularly or on the campus as a whole, that you think is really special and wish more people knew about?
Every spring, Smith has its own Sci-fi/Fantasy convention called ConBust. My first couple years here I kind of just assumed it would be pathetic and not worth the money to go, so I ignored it. And then senior year I saw one of their posts on Facebook and so I followed the link to their schedule of events and I was like “…why…why did I not look at this before?”
It is a small con, but that means you really get to talk to the panelists, and they bring in really cool people. There were two freelance manga translators there this year who did a lot to help put me in touch with people in the industry with the power to hire me if I was interested in pursuing a career as an manga editor. There were a bunch of authors and editors, an animator from Cartoon Network, cartoonists, the guy who created the Dothraki language for Game of Thrones, and more. There are weapons demonstrations, there’s food, an artist alley, people in cosplay (and not). If you love sci-fi/fantasy, this is an amazing event. I went to some really interesting talks, like the one on Creepypasta, and some fascinating panels that dealt a lot with how we create sci-fi/fantasy worlds, so there was one on making magic systems, another on interstellar governments. And then there were also panels that were about examining how we consume and interact with things, like the panel on fandom and criticism, and another on videogames as literature.
Also, if you’re at all interested in writing sci-fi/fantasy, OMG GO. I got so much advice and learned a lot, not just about world-building and editing, but also how the publishing industry works and what different routes are available to get your work out there, and what the pros and cons of each are.
I went with a couple friends and I honestly spent pretty much my entire weekend at ConBust. I got way more out of it than the $15 I spent for my weekend pass.
What have been your favorite courses at Smith and why?
ENG 296: Advanced Fiction Writing: I’ve taken this class twice, once with Emily Barton in the spring of my sophomore year, and this spring with Ruth Ozeki. And both times it has been wonderful. Ruth Ozeki is amazing. (I also really enjoyed ENG 206: Intermediate Fiction Writing with David Maine). I love creative writing, so it’s great to have classes that force me to prioritize my writing and work on it throughout the busy school year. I can really see my progress as a writer when I look back through stories that I’ve written and revisions I’ve done for these classes, which makes me proud. These are workshop-style classes, and so you get lots of feedback on your work, both from the professor (always a published author), and from your classmates. I also definitely learned how to give more constructive feedback and criticism, and how to take it. A+, 10/10, would take again, and in fact, did.
HST 217: WWII in East Asia: History and Memory: I took this class second semester first year with my major advisor, Professor Marnie Anderson. Every class I’ve taken with her has been amazing, because she’s a great professor—really knowledgeable and understanding, and also organized. She gets the necessary information across in her lectures, which are usually pretty engaging, and she’s really good at facilitating and supporting discussion in class.
For this particular class, we focused on certain big events from WWII in East Asia, like the issue of the comfort women, the atomic bombings of Japan, war propaganda in the US and Japan, and the Nanjing Massacre. We examined these issues from multiple perspectives, and it was truly fascinating to see not only how different countries remember things very differently, but also how historical memory changes over time within the same country. It was a really fascinating, thought-provoking class, and I highly recommend it to everyone.
Digital Media Literacy 2017: This was actually a J-term class I took this year and it was one of the best classes I’ve ever taken at Smith, no joke. It’s a fairly intense class, and we all learned so much. I had zero digital media experience going in, and I came out knowing the basics of Photoshop, how to use a DSLR camera, how to scout a location for audio and video recording, how to set up light-kits and microphones for a video shoot, how to capture audio and video, and then how to edit my footage in Premiere Pro. We learned about copyright, too, and how to do some basic things in Motion5 to make animations. Am I perfect, now? No. But I can do things I had literally no clue how to do before I took this class, and I’m building on those skills as Social Media Chair for Gardiner.
You can see some more stuff about the course, including examples of the work we did, here: https://spark.adobe.com/page/Uw4HSPPAYTV1d/
Also, here’s a video I made for the class! I had no clue how to do things like this before I took DML, and by the end of the 2 weeks, I was able to produce this, so that’s pretty impressive! (Thank you to Siobhan for letting me interview you all the time lol)

EAS 210: Culture and Diplomacy in Asia: I took this class with Professor Dennis Yasutomo and it was amazing. First of all, Professor Yasutomo is one of the best professors I have encountered during my college career. He really understands what it’s like to be a student—for this class we didn’t have to buy a single book, he gave us printouts and links to articles on Moodle, because he said he had always hated it when professors made him buy tone of books to read one or two chapters out of, so he wasn’t going to do that to us.
For this class, we examined different ideas about different countries’ negotiating styles and the various theories behind why they negotiate like that. His lectures were always informative, and discussions were always lively and interesting. And then at the end of class he would be like, “so, to sum up, what I’m hearing from you is that you think XYZ.” And we’d all be like “wait, now that you say it like that, no, hang on. Let me think about this some more.”
