just finished vengeance most fowl. it was so fun first and foremost but i don't think I'm the only one who saw it as a fairly heavy handed generative AI analogy - at least in part. there's helpful things AI can do, sure. but patting your dog, being 'creative' on your behalf and being your everyday reliance for things as simple and human as making tea aren't it.

When people create movies: We must be very careful! We need to be respectful as possible. We shall cast very specifically people who have descent from that area or that look like their parts. What do you mean it is just a cartoon? OF COURSE it matters! And we shall also brag about how ethnically correct our voice actors are. And of course it doesn't matter it is fiction because culture behind fiction is important and it needs to be properly featured. Oh no we shall not feature the diversity we know by evidence it existed in the area because we need to focus on the ethnic identity of the indigenous populations

When people create movies featuring ancient Europe: We cast everything because we need diversity on every corner of Europe! What? What do you mean you have objections because the area did not look like this? Racist! Shut the fuck up is just a movie and the cast is very talented! They need empowering and you don't know what you are saying! It IS accurately depicted you just don't know shit! Aww the movie features myths but you have problem with the inaccurate ethnicity? Racist! It is just fiction! It doesn't matter! Your stories don't matter. They are mainstream anyways so who the fuck cares about something that happened thousands of years ago? No one would understand it anyways.

Me: Incredible! And you manage to fuck both of the above examples up because the "ethnically correct" movies are totally stripped of essence and do not give the real powerful cultures that they represent and the second...there ARE amazing examples that are unknown to the public that wait to be explored that involve both cultural diversity AND amazing stories and yet...yeah...

With all the talk about the Archheart's plan, here are 2 reminders:

1. Disagreeing with a character's points doesn't automatically make their points stupid.

Ask yourself this: Do you think their points are stupid or do you just disagree with them? (yes, there is a difference)

You can't just say "oh x is being stupid" and leave it at that. At least put the effort into explaining why you think that.

And take a second to consider why that character is thinking/acting like that. It can be due to their experiences, their identity, character alignment (i.e. Dorian being chaotic neutral & Orym being neutral good), or character stats (i.e. Ashton's 6 charisma).

Think about what they know and don't know (i.e. Dorian has only been back for ~5 days, he doesn't have all the information that BH has).

Calling someone's points stupid implies that there was no thought put into them. And I think all of BH put thought into their points

2. Just because a character is biased, doesn't mean their views are any less valid.

Newsflash, there is no such thing as an unbiased perspective. Who you are and what you experience impacts how you perceive things. You can either be directly biased or indirectly biased

A perfect example of being directly biased would be Orym towards the Ruby Vanguard. He is biased because their attack caused the death of his father and husband. Another example would be Dorian towards the gods. He is biased because the Spider Queen killed his brother while the Wildmother and Matron refused to help.

Indirectly biased would be more identity-based. Laudna has not had any direct communication with the Matron (until now) BUT her opinions on the RQ may have ties to her identity and experiences as a hollow one. Another example would be how Ashton's views on Liliana has ties to their experiences with cults

My biggest pet peeve is when they use the fact that the character is biased as a gotcha. When Orym verbally acknowledged that he's biased (c3e92), I saw an uproar of people saying that Orym is "too biased" to have the conversation or that he is not in his right mind. Or worse, that he "shouldn't be in this conversation." I heavily disagree with all of that. If anything, acknowledging that you are biased will make me listen to your points more.

You can't be unbiased. The closest thing you can be is less biased than others. An example of this would be Dorian during swordgate. He was not there to see Orym, Fearne, Laudna, or Chetney die to Ishta. Also, he had only been back for two days and didn't know everything as deeply as the rest of BH did. He was less biased (and more detached from the situation) than the others. However, as I said in this post, there was some bias there. The main ones being (a) him being closer to Orym than Laudna and most importantly (b) his experiences with cursed/evil items.

Rewatching Gumball is knowing that while there is no actual real overarching plot the episodes are still so amazingly interconnected.

I love how they do foreshadowing, how they build on little moments that we see through out other episodes. It's Banana joe's mom's future paintings being a small joke in "The Shell". Rob being in the deleted place with all the forgotten things in "The Void" after we see that Gumball and Darwin have a hard time remembering him and then completely forget him once Darwin kicks him into the sewers a whole season earlier in "The Pony". He then literally still has parts of the void ingrained in his design when he comes back. It's the fact that Penny and her family being hollow shells with something inside was being played as haunting jokes for episodes before the one based entirely around it. It's the fact that characters like Sarah have always been a little fourth wall breaky and so an episode like "The Fan Fiction" is so completely in line with her character that it's unremarkable in context, hell there's an episode where she sings the ending song to end the show and avoid an awkward conversation her being able to take some control of the show feels like the natural evolution of that.

The background characters in gumball have such distinct personalities that have been pretty consistent and built upon since season 2 which is completely insane and unprecedented for an episodic 2010 children's cartoon. The show might not have had an arc but it has always been continuous.

You do really get the sense that this is a world where everyone is very hyper-aware of the rules in which they operate. The show might reset at the end of the episode but the people don't
