Some Highly Recommended Kdrama
My pal @troubled-mind asked me if I had any recommendations for good kdramas to watch, and my answer to that is: literally always. I put together this short list for them and decided to share in case anyone else is interested.
Parameters for this list: modern setting, strong focus on friendship dynamics, mix of genres, avoid university settings, no one-sided romantic pursuits, and no terribly sad endings
Be Melodramatic/Melo Is My Nature (Viki)
Fantastic friendship focused drama about a group of close friends who all move in together in the wake of personal crises. A healing drama that includes a couple love lines. And an out gay side character (still extremely rare for mainstream kdrama, unfortunately). This one will make you laugh and cry.
Happiness (Viki)
Pandemic zombies attack! Now I am not really a zombie person, but I absolutely love this show. It’s about a pair of working class besties who decide to get married in order to win a housing lottery (one of them may or not be hoping this fake marriage turns real), then immediately get caught in a lockdown with all their new neighbors when there’s a zombie virus outbreak. Shenanigans ensue! This is more action thriller than horror, and the two main characters are some of my all time favs. The writing, plotting, and pacing are tight as hell and it’s a rare perfect 10 for me on that front.
Coffee Prince (Viki)
MY BELOVED. This is an absolute classic genderbend kdrama that I’ve watched several times. The show that made Gong Yoo famous. An honest to goodness queer narrative about a chaebol who meets a girl pretending to be a boy for poverty reasons, falls in love, and has a bisexual awakening. This show was way ahead of its time even if it doesn’t use our modern language (you will not hear the words trans, non-binary or bi/pansexual but trust me, they’re there). Also features a fun friend group who all work together at the coffee shop. I try to make everyone watch this one, and recently got @bengiyo and @kyr-kun-chan to watch and validate my read of the story, and they enjoyed it a lot despite the messy hets. Be warned though that this drama is old old, so you’ll need to adjust to the visuals.
Fight for My Way (Viki)
My all time favorite friends to lovers drama, this is a coming of age tale of two best friends and their long journey to getting on the same page about romance. Their dynamic is fantastic and the story is mostly set in their early adulthood as they try to establish themselves in careers and make sense of their bond as adults. Also features their close friends who form a fun little group with them. And Park Seo Joon, a god among drama actors.
Hospital Playlist (Netflix)
If you want excellent friendship dynamics, look no further. This show is all about a group of five friends who met in college and have stuck together for over two decades and all of life’s ups and downs. The story begins when they find themselves all working in the same hospital for the first time since med school and decide to restart their old band. Yes, there will be singing, and no, you don’t have to cover your ears - the cast is stacked with South Korea’s best musical theater talent. This drama is slice of life and takes us through a couple years with them as they reforge their bonds and each deal with their own family baggage and love lives.
Misaeng (Netflix)
My all time favorite workplace drama that has the unique distinction of being the only show to ever make me literally burst into happy tears. No romance in this one. Story centers on a former baduk prodigy (think if Reply 1988 Taek stalled out instead of becoming a master) who attempts to enter the workforce with no discernible skills. He bumbles and fumbles and alternately competes with and bonds with his fellow interns, and forms a deep and lasting relationship with his mentor. When I tell you this show is a master class in writing to create emotional stakes, phew! How else can you explain me getting deep in my feelings over the success or failure of an import/export company?
My Mister (Netflix or Viki)
This one is a bit darker, as it deals with themes of intergenerational trauma, abuse, poverty, depression, and general ennui. Not a romance, this drama focuses on the strange and unexpected bond that forms between a middle aged man and a younger woman working on his team. They meet at an important inflection point in both their lives and forge a friendship that changes them both. Really moving and utterly beautiful, with an ending that will make you feel happy to be alive.
Extraordinary You (Viki)
Time for a change up! This is a fantasy show in which the main character becomes self aware and realizes she is a side character in a manwha. Technically set in a school (inside the manwha) but not actually about that. She bonds with another side character who is self aware, and the two of them start working to change the story so that they can break free (and fall in love while doing it, naturally). The concept of this one is just so cool and they do a lot of interesting things with it, plus the visuals are stunning.
The Uncanny Counter (Netflix)
Because I know you liked Oh No! Here Comes Trouble, I’m adding this one about a kid who discovers he has superpowers and teams up with a little found family of grim reapers to fight evil. The family unit is great and there’s lots of good stuff in their various relationships with each other. This one is a lot of fun but also touches on the characters’ sad backstories and family lives.
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo (Viki)
You said to avoid university settings but I’m adding this one in case you want to give a classic college romance a try. My fav in that category, it’s a sports romance between a weightlifter and a swimmer who used to be childhood friends and reconnect in college while they’re struggling with performance issues, body image, and romance. It’s a friends to lovers slow burn and they are utterly adorable.
If you like any of these, let me know and I can give you more recs!! Y’all can hit me up anytime, getting other people to watch my fav shows is one of my number one joys in life.

tagged by @desvoeux , thank you <3
last song: enemy- Imagine Dragons (arcane intro ver. it's good what do you want)
last book: got a start reading icebound in the arctic a couple of days ago because I wanted to look into crozier family history a little more. it's a great read so far I fucking love learning about my man.
last movie: sorry I'm going to use this category as a platform to talk a lot. Re-watched The Lion in Winter last night with my mom (it's one of her favorite movies of all time) and once again was blown away by it all and it makes Succession look like a fucking kiddie pool for family issues. also it has only just now connected with me that it's about fucking richard the lionheart which like. holy fucking shit this thing has so much historical precedent and weight and it's all just so fucking nuts. HE'S GAY!!!! I love it. also really funny that they made peter o'toole play henry ii TWICE (I adore Beckett btw.) but also I really wanna talk about this julie andrews christmas movie I watched the other night called "One Special Night" that she made in 1999 with James Garner (her co-star in victor victoria, btw) and it's basically a hallmark christmas movie but way fucking better because it's about old people problems and they're really fucking so sweet in it and it's so good on so many levels it's ridiculous I don't want to shut up about it. (this watch was brought to you by having re-watched the Eloise movies and then watching The Sound of Music and feeling extremely nostalgic about salzburg and missing it and wanting to go back. but also not being able to get the lonely goatheard out of my fucking head for 3 days straight. you're welcome)
last television show: started squid game 2. unfortunately I like it even though its cultural impact has a lot of problems. and I know that the people a the studio are going to suck about it and miss the point again but even worse this time bc it's parsing through new layers of subservience to capitalism this time. (also. Gong Yoo my beloved <3). but also I finished dune prophecy last night and I hate how much I want to be in a gay relationship with valya harkonen it makes me look so so stupid (look I've had a thing about emily watson since chernobyl ok? nobody @ me)
sweet/savoury/spicy: savory for sure
relationship status: blissfully unengaged thank you for asking (... 👀 unless?)
last thing I looked up on the internet: one special night because I fucking forgor James Garner's name for a second ngl.
current obsession: other than... um... the obvious. a few things: The Leftist Cooks video essays on youtube which are genuinely. the most comprehensive and academically sound video essays on the entire platform and I'm serious about this. just wrapped up their representation matters/spiderverse video a few days ago and sarah and neil did a really good job of constructing a comprehensive argument that both reaffirmed and even in some places challenged some stuff that I already knew??? those guys just do a great job at it all. I've also been saving extant examples of ballgowns from the 1850's/1860's because I got my hands on some fancy material on discount for christmas and I'm going to make one so help me god. it's going to be snow queen themed. (stay tuned). also I await new adam savage raptor build updates with rapt and rabid glee.
looking forward to: getting my fuckass new glasses fixed because I am dying of the eyestrain that they are causing. but also. new magic wand got delivered today yaaaaaay 🥰
no pressure tags: @prismatica-the-strange @roaming-thru-roses @your-mighty-words-astound-me @ashton-slashton @theboarsbride @brotherdusk @marshmallow--galaxies @spockvarietyhour @hamishlinklaters @sunlaire

My favourite Awkward Turtleducks and Awkward Ducklings.
If someone who is browsing on my profile are confused as to why I tag some reblogs as "awkward turtleducks" and "awkward ducklings". Well here's my reasoning:
This is a turtleduck from Avatar The Last Airbender. It's a hybrid of a duck and a turtle, and they are adorable.
And the ducklings are these adorable idiot North Korean Soldiers from Crash Landing On You.
The OG are definitely Captain Ri Jeong Hyeok's (Hyun Bin) soldier ducklings who like to follow him and also protect the captain's lover (Son Ye Jin) (shown below). 😏
I described a group "awkward turtleducks" and "awkward ducklings" as adorable, funny, like to follow around or stick together, and have the best comedic relationships.
Examples of my favourite ducklings:
1. Obviously the adorable soldier ducklings - Crash Landing On You:
2. Chloe Decker (Lauren German) and Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) [Deckerstar] - Lucifer:
3. Kim Shin (Gong Yoo) and the Grim Reaper (Lee Dong Wook) - Guardian the Lonely and Great God aka Goblin:
4a. Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) [Polin] - Bridgerton:
OR
4b. Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton themselves [Lukola]:
My current favourite awkward turtleducks and ducklings are Polin and Lukola (I don't ship the actors as lovers, but I love their friendship and the connection they have) because they embody the hapless and adorable ducklings like the soldiers in Crash Landing On You. They give me nostalgia that reminds me of my beloved K-Drama. (Sadly I moved on from watching K-Dramas, but I do enjoy them casually.)
As for Bridgerton, I ship both Kanthony and Polin. But Kanthony are not part of the awkward turtleducks and ducklings club because they are angsty, protective, sacrificial idiot leaders. So they are definitely not ducklings, more like parents, like Zutara and Captain Ri.
I hope this helps the confusion. 👋

To My Beloved Ji Chul: @yoohoo79
I didn't fall in love with you.
I walked into love with you, with my eyes wide open, choosing to take every step along the way.
I do believe in fate and destiny, but I also believe we are only fated to do the things that we'd choose anyway.
And I'd choose you; in a hundred lifetimes, in a hundred worlds, in any version of reality,
I'd find you and I'd choose you.
Signed, Mrs Gong Yoo

heyaaa! hope you are having a wonderful day, if it's comfortable with you can I ask for some k drama recs I really liked coffee prince and reply 1988 but can't find something similar
hiii, so i haven't seen reply 1988 but i really loved reply 1997 which was first in the reply series followed by reply 1994 (haven't seen this either so idk if it's good or bad)
here's some classics that really got me addicted to kdramas back when i started watching
full house: my first kdrama. very silly but cute af. back when romcoms didn't used to have serial killers in them the ost my beloved
my name is kim sam-soon/ my lovely sam soon: fake dating/ bickering. and the background was a restaurant i think. i had so much fun binging it. sam-soon really was the best.
boys over flowers: a classic adapted from a classic shoujo manga where you'll find every crazy thing that can only happen in a drama. it's absurd at times very many times but it's addictive af. also great soundtrack
playful kiss: i became a jung so-min stan after this. tho i like the taiwanese version best now it was fun binging it when i didn't know of the tw version.
personal taste: lee min ho pretended to be gay because he wanted to get inside a house for architectural reasons. i did like it. maybe check it out because the pain gong yoo felt, son ye-jin also goes through something similar although it was different.
my girlfriend is a gumiho: fantasy romance about a 900yo nine tailed fox and a wannabe action star. it was fun and cute and i cried at times too. shin min-a is the most beautiful human to walk this earth. great songs esp lee sun-hee's fox rain (acoustic)
sungkyunkwan scandal*: female lead pretends to be a boy because she wanted to study in a university when women weren't allowed to study. university ofc full of boys
rooftop prince*: time slip romance. was extremely popular
my love from another star: a top star gets accused of murdering her rival. lives across from a professor who's a 400yo alien who ends up becoming her manager. first romance drama i remember watching where there was a serial killer. both the second leads were annoying af
some other faves of mine that aren't as old
i can hear your voice: lee jong-suk can read minds if he looks into your eyes. public attorneys and prosecutors and a killer. loved it
pinocchio: news channels and reporters and fake news. one of my favourite kdramas ever. there's very few that keep you hooked from the beginning till the end. not one bad episode. i made so many people get into this one and everybody loved it too. great ost. you won't see vlc media player the same after this. made by the same people who made ichyv so you might enjoy it more because of some references but it's alright otherwise too.
healer: do you believe in the poooower of ever lasting loooooove.... another one in my forever faves that i got other people into. the chemistry of jcw and pmy was through the roof. people died because of them. some of the best kissing scenes ever too. no love triangle. reporters and tabloids and a messenger and world's greatest ahjumma. first couple of episodes weren't that good but i promise it gets so much better after my beloved Park Bong-soo shows up. usually i am not for english songs in kdramas but eternal love by MLTR has a special place in my heart.
fated to love you: jang hyuk and jang na-ra are just too good together. i watched because of ailee's goodbye my love and then regretted not starting it when it was airing. all of the soundtrack is great. lee gun's laugh >>>
her private life: since you loved coffee prince i am sure you liked kim jae-wook and this was his first kdrama lead role after everyone waiting for god knows how many years. couldn't watch it when it was airing because i was in my kdrama slump but when i got out i regretted not watching then. pmy and kjw together are just soooooo
one more happy ending: i just love jang na-ra. romcom with good songs about 4 women trying to find love again. jung kyung-ho and jang na-ra need to work together again idec about the genre.
come back ahjussi: two dead guys come back to life hotter. one in a man's body and other in a woman's. had fun watching it. ratings were low because one of the most overrated kdrama was airing at the same timeslot.
jealousy incarnate/ don't dare to dream: weather girl finds out the anchor she'd have a crush on forever had breast cancer. it's a romcom. had a love triangle and gave people major second-lead syndrome not me tho. back when gong hyo-jin used to be the romcom queen. great soundtrack
extra-ordinary you: and it was extraordinary. fantasy romance about an extra who is just trying to keep herself alive. eun dan-o was the life of the drama. high school romance. green flaggest male lead (i don't usually say that for anyone but he sure was). good songs and very rare for me to say that for a soundtrack of a drama only as recent as 2019.
crazy love: kjw is just too good in romcoms. this drama was crazy as the name suggests and hella fun. lee sin-a you'll always be famous.
lovely runner: ended just this tuesday and idk if you watched it but definitely worth watching. up there with pinocchio being good from the beginning till the end and no bad episode im sight. great songs great cast great characters. first loves time slips rain sunshine k-pop idols it had everything. ten years from now it'll surely be in the classics list
*haven't watched so i can't if they're good or bad but used to be very popular and were always in kdrama rec lists back then.
#anon reply#got a bit longer didn't it 😬#i actually removed some from this list too 😅#kdrama recommendations#hope you enjoy whichever one you decide to watch#if you want more recs and if you enjoy dark or melodramas ik some that i didn't add here

My Top 5 KDrama Recs
you're in for a bumpy ride *finger guns*
#5 - weightlifting fairy kim bok joo/ strong girl do bong soon
such feel good dramas. if you're looking for a light hearted watch, something to get you out of your kdrama slump, this one's for you. strong girls, cheesy simp boys, good friendships and good feels all around. ignore the sub plot in do bong soon and you'll be happier than ever.
#4 - doom at your service
the thing. with this. was. I LOVED THE CONCEPT. ive basically ranted about the concept in the review, but yes. the visuals are pretty good, with some cute rain and garden scenes and fated for each other thingamajig. little girl god is there, bonus visuals of seo in guk reversing with hand on back of car seat and parking ticket in his mouth. ps - second couple was everything.
#3 - vincenzo
Hollywood should really stop trying to make action/crime/mafia movies because Vincenzo made me believe koreans have cracked the code. i mean, the action, the subtle romance, the equal bad assery of BOTH male and female leads, + some really iconic lines. you WILL NOT find a hotter villain (jang han seok ily), a more annoying side villain ( choi myeong hui die again), or a better character arc ( jang han seo my beloved). amazing.
#2 - our beloved summer
welcome to me ranting about my favs again. very topsy turvy but feel good drama, slow and equal paced with real people. it's a heavy watch, so be sure you're ready when you dive in. it takes some time to love it, but once you do, you love it too much.
#1 - guardian: the lonely and great god
gong yoo and lee dong woo. that should be enough reason. plotline 5 stars, action, visuals 4 stars, romance 4.5 stars, bromance 174634 stars, second lead couple 5 stars, JUST WATCH IT
again, im still in the process of watching new dramas, so I'll put up a new and updated list soon!
