Book 43 of the 50 book challenge. The Auschwitz Photographer by Luca Crippa and Maurizio Onnis. This is a historical fiction story set in Auschwitz during wwii. The photographer is half Austrian/half Polish man from Poland, a political prisoner because he tried to leave Poland and the Nazis wanted him to fight for them. He arrived in Auschwitz in 1940 and was removed by the Germans when they escaped in January 1945 and was then sent to Mauthausen where he was liberated. The real person never took photographs after the war due to the trauma.

“I think there is a responsibility for all filmmakers remaking these much-loved cartoons. I do think you have to be able to justify the ‘why’ in doing it, at least from a creative standpoint. I think we need to feel as if we have dealt with something respectfully and have breathed new life into something in a hopefully entertaining and surprising way.”

Just finished editing the photographs from my second visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau last month, got to say I'm pretty proud of these two. The low light we got in Auschwitz-1 made shooting tricky but so atmospheric ally effective, while seeing Birkenau at night was a very different experience from my first visit last year

All of my photographic art of Auschwitz-Birkenau, as with all of my artistic interpretations of dark tourism sites, was done with the utmost respect and for posterity.

The Mirth of Monsters A picture appeared on my phone today, on the proverbial page I perused.
A view of an evil most vile, villainy veiled behind verve and vim.
Sadists from Auschwitz, smiling in a storm. Shoulders shrugging, to shield from the sky.
No hint of the horrors, the Holocaust they heralded. Not haunted like the humans they harrow, but hyenas, howling, in high humor after the hunt.
Their consciences clear, their cruelty concealed, their cheer chills me to the core. They caused such wicked calvary, a calamity that echoes into the current century.
Yet they dare to delight, while they deal in death and dread. Their depravity so deep that they grin, as they decry virtue and destroy millions.
But what mortifies me more is, how mundane their mien.
Will we fear the next fiends fittingly, or in time... if their faces feel like friends'?
