I used to think the concept of being nonbinary was kind of dumb because "everyone thinks of themselves in gender neutral pronouns. everyone takes a second to respond when someone calls them 'ma'am/sir'. everyone fails to realize they're being referred to when someone says 'he/she'. everyone hates their birth name. everyone feels horribly uncomfortable with the structure of their body and how it is perceived"

Until I talked to cisgender people about those totally universal experiences and found out

I used to think ADHD wasn't that big of a deal because "everyone has a terrible memory. everyone has a terrifyingly strong sense of justice. everyone makes mental connections like a frantic conspiracy cork board. everyone is desperately afraid of rejection. everyone easily falls into 'obsessions' and 'flow'. it's hard for everyone to start tasks early and follow through with long projects. everyone clings to good things until all the good is sucked dry. "

These beliefs hurt me horribly because I would compare myself to people who weren't dealing with my ADHD and mental illness, and wonder why I was failing compared to them. Maybe I was just lazy, and I was smart but had no drive. Maybe my teachers were right and I was just a "big fish is a small pond" that would suffer because I was too complacent to study. Maybe I was at fault for all of the ways that I suffered. Maybe I wasn't truly suffering at all. Maybe I was the problem.

But then I got diagnosed and had to accept the knowledge that

✨️ No, I Was Not ✨️

My experiences were different from my peers, and trying to force myself to work like them, to be like them, would never work. My experiences weren't universal, and I had to learn how to accomodate for it. I had to learn to embrace it.

So, long story short: It's scary to realize your experiences are not the socially-approved norm. And sometimes it's easier to bury parts of yourself than accept them,

But those stories, those other lived experiences, are proof that you're not in this alone.
