lloyd - jinx; initially was unsure on whether to make him jinx or ekko but i thought nya fit better as ekko. which yeah. he and kai are not related here though. he still goes by jinx after.. you know

nya - ekko; ^ . ofc since ekko isnt related to vi in the series, it's different in this au; both nya and kai live with ronin (benzo) but they hang out with lloyd a lot

garmadon - vander; ykw. i feel like this is pretty self-explanatory too.

sora (& arin possibly) - isha; although i do still have thoughts of making isha two characters (arin + sora) in this version since. idk. it makes sense

overlord & pythor - silco; ok this one might be a little confusing but overlord is technically the actual silco in this au, but pythor does a lot of the stuff in silco did in s1. pythor is more like another member of the chem-barons but he's the one the overlord trusts most, so he takes on a more silco-like role rather than just one of the other barons. but in the overall structure of the chem-barons, the overlord would be silco. iygwim

harumi - singed; THIS ONE SOUNDS A LITTLE SILLY I KNOW. but i felt it sorta made sense considering the other pairings. also. reviving garmmy and all... instead of a daughter i feel maybe she'd want to revive her parents? smth like that..

jay - jayce; guy whos trying his best but he lowkey sucks at it. yeah that. i feel whatever happened to jayce in the arcane might reflect well into his DR arc? yeaghh

cole - mel; this ones a LITTLE undecided but my idea is that he was taken in by vangelis or smth. her brother would be vania. or it could be the other way around. idk yet..

zane - viktor; uhhh. he would Not be a robot in this au but Yeagh i felt like this fit a bit.

skylor - cait; this ones also undecided!!! i can maybe see cole and skylor being switched around. im honestly not very sure yet.

wu - heimerdinger; wu and garm are still related here! theyre both long-aging creatures, except they went to separate places. wu went to topside and garm went to the undercity, and they have not spoken in a very VERY long time. :3

so my general idea here is five (mostly) solo superheroes coming together as a team. still not sure what actually brings the five of them together/why they choose to start working as a team but. thats the idea!

rambling under the cut, shoutout to @wormcoded he helped me come up with like. all of the superhero aliases.

before i forget, a note here that i think they're like. college aged here? maybe a little older.

a rundown on each of them:

kuroo - forcefield user!! violet from incredibles core except no invisibility. i really liked the idea of him having a power that's mostly defensive because of him being a middle blocker in canon. and i think a power that would force him to think creatively (for offensive use) suits him well. crafty bastard (affectionate).

the superhero alias he WANTS to go by and is trying to make happen is 'Pure Carbon', however the public have decided on something different (i have yet to figure out what though)

he doesn't fully work solo before meeting the others! he has kenma as his guy in the chair. kenma was the first one to know when kuroo figured out he had powers and has helped him come up with creative ways to use it. literally kuroo would not the hero he is without kenma. (the kuroken in this au is 100% platonic though, im shooting for kurodai i think)

the fact that kuroo has a civilian helping him will cause conflict with two of the others (daichi & oikawa) later though.

bokuto, "supernova" - i don't know how to easily sum up his powers. um... he can float/fly and he can glow :] light based powers basically. very much tied to his emotions too. i imagine there's more for him to discover. i kinda like the idea of him being a newer hero who has only gotten his powers recently.

also fairly strong but it's unknown whether these are his powers or if he's just like that. (probably the latter) i think he's the one who is the most eager for them to be a cool superhero team. the heart, if you will.

he mostly works solo HOWEVER. akaashi does know bokuto's secret and is the one who coined bokuto's superhero name. big akaashi gay moment but also he kinda had to step in cause bokuto was fully prepared to just go by his name, lmao. akaaahi being fully in the loop similarly causes issues with the group (again, oikawa and daichi) when they figure it out.

undecided whether bokuaka are dating or still Pining So Hard.

daichi, "kenichi" - does not have powers! just some guy, the hero. sort of the reason why his superhero persona name is just. a name. (kenichi can mean 'strong first son') and also well he's daichi. i'm thinking he isn't even the one who came up with it, a little old lady he helped called him it and it stuck. everyone's older brother :]

i need to figure what his whole deal is. how he fights, why he started this, etc etc but. he is literally So hero complex (part one). but him not having any powers just felt right to me. daichi would be the token normal guy on a superhero team.

his friendships are. mostly okay? but suga has picked up on daichi obviously hiding something from them and just acting really weird. so he's trying to get to the bottom of it. in a nosy annoying friend way to mask that he's actually getting really worried. he's made asahi aware of this too though asahi is of the mind that daichi will come to them eventually so they should just give him time.

ushijima, "miracle boy" - has been a hero the longest. i think he was born with his powers while the other three developed them later in life. (still undecided whether it was a natural thing or if some of them had Science Mishaps)

he has very cliche superman-esque powers. flight, super strength, etc.

and im toying with the idea of like. yes he is Miracle Boy but he also doesn't really have a "secret identity". anyone could find out his real name if they dug deep enough. more of a public figure than the others.

and with that in mind, i think it being something where like he was Exposed as a teenager and as a result ended up pulling away from the friendships he had then. but he gets inspired later (by bokuto!) to maybe try and rekindle these friendships.

oikawa, "sōzu" - plant powers. obviously. i had to do it. i also like the idea of them being semi-tied to his emotions like bokuto's. they're guys with big emotions to me. the inspiratiom for his name is a japanese water fountain that's designed to scare away wildlife from gardens. yes he's a little pretentious. yes he would probably say something dramatic about the whole city being his garden. it's just who he is as a person.

hero complex PART TWO! in a different font than daichi but still.

is in the process of basically torpedoing all of his relationships in the name of "keeping his loved ones safe". king of self destructive tendencies.

basically, a few months ago he broke up with iwaizumi but didn't tell him the real reason why. (iwaizumi does not know about oikawa's secret however he does heavily suspect that oikawa is hiding something from him) they are trying to do the "lets stay friends" thing but it's not going so well. iwaizumi is mad because oikawa is obviously keeping something from him and he's trying to act like nothing happened between them.

his friendships with makki and mattsun are also strained because of the whole iwaizumi thing and also he keeps randomly ditching their hangouts with shitty excuses for superhero reasons.

(there is a whole odd miraculous ladybug-esque iwaoisuga sort of love triangle happening here but i'm trying not to write more for oikawa's section than everyone else 💀)

Noble Tav background who does not care much for family riches but still after the events absolutely insists in building Shadowheart their home. Shadowheart reluctantly allows it, maybe even annoyed that its taking forever and Tav is hardly ever around. How long would a normal small cottage right? Thats what Tav promised. Turns out when Tav finally proudly presents their new home.. she built them an actual small mansion. Bc you know Tav has unrealistic views on what is small/big or a normal gesture/grand gesture of affection/commitment. But finally in her life actually feels rich with Shadowheart at her side.

It's not silly anon, it's beautiful and wholesome. My first ever Tav had a noble background and I used to fantasise about this too.

Especially the Shadowheart one because we ourselves get to go into her destroyed village and see the broken homes and the rubble. We get to read the diaries and books of all the people who immediately had to leave their homes.

Imagine Shadowheart's family who finally reunited after so long, you wouldn't want to burden them with having to figure out where to live or where to go.

Like that village probably was a human one, and I doubt her father is welcome back into his elf grove after having a half-elf child. Not to mention her mother doesn't have much time alive.

Noble Tav that fully funds the rebuilding of the village, fixing the windmill and securing the nearby settlements from any goblin or intruders. Fully giving Shadowheart's parents their old homes back.

Also it's just a theory but do you think her father is the blacksmith? The one who invented the sussur tree weapon recipe? Elves and smithry tend to go hand in hand sometimes and the fact you can only enchant daggers, sickles and swords aka weapons that elves commonly use, make me suspect it more.

Not just for Shadowheart but for all families that suffered during the invasion of their village. Shadowheart would probably tear up from joy at being back at her childhood home alongside her parents even if she can't remember it.

For Minthara, I don't think she is allowed back in the underdark.

I mean she can still go there, no one will stop her. But the assassination attempts will skyrocket tenfolds. House Baerne is the last ever house you get to insult and live to tell the tale like she did.

She does want to establish a new house eventually and take revenge on her old house, kill them before they kill you type of situation.

I'd imagine a noble Tav being her patron for all of this, using their absurd amount of wealth and the weight their family name holds to establish a very stronghold in the underdark.

Minthara being the Matriarch of that house, having Tav sitting all pretty on her lap in the throne room. The founder of the this new drow house and one of the most influencal and richest nobles being absolutely smitten with this one drow women. Obediently laying on her lap as she keeps a possessive hold on them. The closest thing a drow Matron ever got to marriage.

Funding all her princess needs and personal army while being spoiled by her lips and possessive words by night. Giving her all the power she could ever need and more.

I'm currently binging and trying to get up to date on Viva La Dirt League's NPC D&D campaign, the vldl crew are friends of my work and the DM for this games (Rob Hartley) dm'd the game that Aestereoth first debuted in. But also this series is literally the only dnd series I can watch/stomach. It isnt just 4hr podcasts every week. They're nice snippy 30 min episodes with cutaways to them acting out the scenes they played. It's SO FUNNY and i love these guys a lot :3 can't wait to catch up so i can draw them finally haha

Secondly is my partner and I are watching thru all of Card Captor Sakura!! :D They watched the localised version as a kid so it's important to them but they hadn't seen the unedited japanese version ever so we get to watch it for the first time together. It's just so cute and wholesome and silly and jkahsdkjahd good comfy anime. Fucked up in places like all good anime should be but like overall... 10/10 snuggle anime.

anemone (ze/they/she) & felicity (she/xe) are minecraft roleplay characters played by me & @felicityphoenix5. u can see the skins 4 them Here and we haven't done a ton of their lore yet but im soooo crazyinsane abt them. ice & fire phoenixes... they give in to their natures so easily... they become villains in their own style: anemone becomes a cold-hearted ice queen & felicity becomes a vengeful, angry creature of rage.

o!moth (she/he/they/it) was originally a rp character for a friend's au but i loved its design too much and made it an oc. it is a giant moth from an alternate dimension thats full of supersized life (plants & animals). its a moth that lives in a giant jungle. one day they accidentally fell in a portal and found an artifact 2 turn her human. hes really attracted 2 shiny things and is very flamboyant

f!inky (pronouns Undecided) is a rp character from my meowdy fantasy au. he's a bard with a mysterious backstory- what is that backstory? nobody knows !! but the thing about f!inky is that f!inky is Also a friend of the Dragons. you see, in this world, there are two dragons who have taken over and basically destroyed the world. those would be Felix the Sun/Light dragon (she/xe), played by @felicityphoenix5 and Knives the Night/Shadow dragon (pronouns unsure), played by @urlocalqueer0846. These two are competing constantly, only held back from destroying the world by f!inky, who flirts with both of them and tricks them into Not destroying each other. there are several catches 2 this that would spoil certain plot points, including who/what f!inky actually is, but here are some songs from its playlist for you :] (oh gods sorry i had a hard time choosing my favorites i LOVE my f!inky playlist haha)

rn im getting back into rh on roblox!!! ive been playing since i was like idk 10 or smth so yeah, not to brag or anything, but im kind of a pro 😼 (im actually not ive never even gotten a halo). but i do go into these phases where im suddenly rlly interested to play rh, i get super invested in it for like a week or so, then i drop it and dont touch it for a few months, then i come back and see whats new. rinse and repeat! its like that for most of my other interests too but yeah

anyway besides all that i dont do much on rh, i just hop on, do my dailies, might play the musical chairs thing, and thats abt it! the only other thing i love to do on there is dress up and make new ocs. not even kidding, i have a whole google doc dedicated to my like 20 rh ocs on there, who are mostly under developed lmao. i also like making stupid impuslive decisions with my diamonds and buying things ik i dont need, like i was so close to spending alllll my hard earned diamonds that are already kind of hard to get nowadays on dorm stuff bc i loved how cool and creative ppl could get with their dorms, but i am not a builder, only a decorater. i am a lover not a fighter

plagued by visions of a no powers au where harry visits a dude ranch to ✨get away from it all✨ where he meets peter who works there as a stable hand.

norman is fucking horrified by the idea. thats 80% of the reason harry decides to go

no but between the years spent in a hospital and Many More years spent in his dads shadow he's desperate for a change in scenery. and a dude ranch in the middle of bumfuck nowhere is about as far from nyc as you can get

he's aware it's a very Hallmark Movie idea. he's doing it anyway

it's here that he meets peter, one of the stable hands at the ranch. he does more of the behind the scenes stuff ie taking care of the animals and keeping things clean rather than entertaining visitors

peter and mj are together but in an open relationship. undecided what i want her job to be

miles is also here. hes usually the one doing the horse riding excursions with guests

harry's immediately drawn to peter because who wouldn't be. he spends more of his time just watching peter do his job than he does taking advantage of the Actual entertainment the dude ranch provides

peter works at the ranch to help fund the horse rescue his late aunt left him when she passed

they rescue percherons specifically which are big, mild tempered draft horses. because i love them

the rescue is on pretty shaky grounds money-wise but between peter working crazy hours and some generous donations they can keep their doors open (barely)

peter has his own percheron that the ranch lets him board at their stables so he can ride her on the off chance he has to be a guide on one of the outings or whatever

(the horse's name is to be determined im working on it. i love how insane horse names are and these need to be good)

anyways. harry spends all his time with peter and its not long before theyre getting nasty (t4t style. obviously)

its a casual fling until its not. its impossible to not develop feelings for someone like peter, but harry's not gonna be there forever and that timer is always ticking down in the back of his mind

in between the Incredibly Mild angst though we are getting so corny. theyre doing the thing where they both ride one horse at the same time. theyre having bonfires. harry learns that horse people are kinda wierd

erm ok and thats as far as ive gotten setup-wise lol. im slowly chipping away at making this a fic but i want to have some semblance of a plot fleshed out before i actually post anything. and by 'plot' i mean something vaguely coherent to string together all the sex scenes that got blasted into my brain the second i thought about peter on a horse

its gonna be mostly porn i wont lie. i dont have the energy for another plot heavy slowburn fic rn. this is so lighthearted and fun and (hopefully) sexy. the hallmark thing is serious its like if hallmark made movies in the middle of june that also had explicit gay sex

For a while I've been undecided on what I think Matoba thinks about his own life...it's really hard to tell because he doesn't appear that often in the grand scheme of NatsuYuu, and we've never gotten a chapter from his POV (but what if. Midorikawa. did that. 0_0). But I think I agree with you, it seems like he probably is unhappy or unsatisfied to some extent. And I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't know exactly what he would want if he could have it. He seems like the kind of person to have a lot of messy layers of personality and thought going on, like, the course of his life has always been dictated for him, so there was never a possibility of him getting to do What He Wants. He must have personal desires to some extent, but I wonder how much he lets himself dwell on them.... Okay this is kind of goofy and a stretch but now I'm thinking about his love of sweets and the little remarks other Matoba members have made about him sneaking out for snacks or whatever (I don't remember the chapter but please tell me I'm not imagining this), and how this is something he wants that he can have that isn't related really to the clan business. Matoba's pursual of delicious sweets as a manifestation of having what he wants, something just for him. Wait now we're getting back to the loquats. "It was sweet and delicious; my desire had been fulfilled. But Natori must have gotten a bad one. He was making a weird face [...] Oh, I thought, there's no winning, even in such a small thing as this." Hm.

Ummmm also wrt Natori being the only one who gets to see a more vulnerable Matoba, it's a little funny (painful) because it seems like, especially from his adolescent point of view, that he feels like Matoba is very aloof and couldn't possibly care about him or like, things that don't have to do with success. Not that Matoba makes it easy. But Natori really was...an insecure kid. For good reason though LOL. But augh that's the tragedy of these two to me, they were both like, the wrong people at the wrong time. But maybe now...? :thonk:

Matoba and Burden and Desire

I originally watched/read Natsuyuu back in fall of 2022, and then a few months ago, literally out of nowhere, my brain was like “Hey, remember that loquat story Matoba told in that one arc? It felt like there was something there, let’s go reread that,” which I did, and have been in hexorcists hell about ever since.

And really, that’s it. The loquat story feels like there’s something there, but I couldn’t quite figure out what was going on. But after my close rereading of that arc, I think I’ve at least come to one coherent conclusion about it, even if it’s perhaps the most basic one: I think the loquats are an allegory for the greater themes of burden/desire in this arc. The following is my attempt to lay out my thoughts, but unfortunately I have never been known for my conciseness or my ability to organize my thoughts, so be forewarned. This will be rambly and include a few tangents/too much detail.

The story of the Miharu family is a story of a family that was once respected, had a relationship/contract with powerful ayakashi, and eventually fell into ruin, leaving behind their contracts. The ayakashi, the mihashira, still come to uphold their part of the agreement without fail, but the family is gone. So who comes in their place to maintain the contract? The Matobas, and in the present day, the current head of the Matoba clan is Matoba Seiji. In order to maintain this deal with a group of powerful youkai, which neither he nor his family actually made, Matoba has to come and perform the welcoming ritual to avoid incurring the wrath of the mihashira.

Matoba is a character marked by burden, I think. Though he is the head of the most powerful exorcist clan, and therefore one might expect that he can pretty much do what he wants, I don’t actually think he has much personal freedom. The only son of the main family, he was probably marked as the heir from birth (if not, he would have had to be once his sister left but I still need to read 120+ so I don’t know exactly what the deal with her is). The clan’s interests are his interests. He can’t do anything that might hurt the reputation of or endanger the clan, and he is obligated to do things that benefit the clan. Matoba is Matoba. 

In chapter 25, in his debut arc, he tells Natsume 「使えるものは使わないと。人を守る為に、強い妖が欲しいと思っているだけですよ。その為には恨まれたり代償を払うことを気にしていたら、この家業はやっていけませんしね」

"One should make use of useful things. I just want ayakashi in order to protect people. If I was worried about being hated or suffering consequences, I could not carry on the family business,"

(this is actually one of those annoying instances of a Japanese sentence that’s more dense than would sound good in English. Matoba seems to be explaining his personal worldview/thoughts here with 思っている even though in English you’d never say “I just feel like/think I want strong ayakashi…” He’s explaining that this is the way he thinks, I think lol).

Matoba doesn’t get the privilege of having a good reputation among humans or ayakashi, since we learn in special chapter 17 that no good ayakashi will make deals with the Matobas because of their famous broken promise. Matoba Seiji not only inherits the burden of monthly eye-stealing visits, he also can’t make contracts with ayakashi and  takes on all the distrust that’s built up over generations from both humans and ayakashi. 

And now Matoba is taking on the debts of a dead branch family to avoid possibly endangering his own.

In the locked room, when Matoba is goading Natori into breaking them out, he says 「どうです？あなたには解くことができますか名取。無理ならばすべて私が片付けてさしあげましょうか？」

"Well, can you do it, Natori? If you can’t, shall I take care of everything for you?"

I’m unsure how much of this is Matoba teasing Natori (as he seems to like doing in the Homura arc) about how he’s not as powerful/skilled as Matoba, and how much is him simply making an offer because he’s Matoba and he’s The One Who Takes Care Of Everything. I think either way, there is at least a good amount of the latter going on here. 

In special chapter 17, Matoba shows up at Natori’s house and helps him exorcise the ayakashi that’s been haunting him. After Natori wakes up, he tries to offer to help Matoba in some way. I think he felt uncomfortable being the only one being helped, and wanted to find something he could offer Matoba, even though Matoba seems to have everything he needs. Natori offers to listen to his problems, and Matoba smiles (of course) and says he’s fine. Even teenage Matoba is like “You’re not the one who helps me, I’m the one who helps you.” Though this chapter is from Natori’s perspective, so Natori believes Matoba was just using him to get an ayakashi, I’m not sure that’s true. I don’t know for sure what Matoba’s motives were, but I don’t believe teenage Natori is an unbiased observer of him lol. 

Now that we’ve laid all that out, let’s talk briefly about the Miharus, a once respected family who made a deal with ayakashi they didn’t understand, and fell into ruin. According to the ayakashi who wants to sabotage the ritual, there was a member of the Miharu family called Masakiyo. Masakiyo was stern for the most part, but there was someone he loved. However, he couldn’t be with that person because he couldn’t make them shoulder the burdens of his family business, but neither could he simply abandon his family. He had to stay with his family and let this person go. This was the only time this ayakashi saw Masakiyo cry. Then we get this panel:

In his despair, Masakiyo wished there was no Miharu family. The ayakashi, feeling indebted to Masakiyo for letting it go during an exorcism, overhears him and decides that destroying the Miharu family will bring Masakiyo happiness. This is an unintended contract between the two of them. Masakiyo unwittingly causes an ayakashi to spend years (decades?) trying in vain to destroy his family in order to repay a perceived debt. This isn’t Masakiyo’s fault, really, it was just an unfortunate misunderstanding. The ayakashi didn’t understand that Masakiyo wanted it to be free and live the life he couldn’t. “You were almost exorcised because of human circumstances. You were saved on the whim of a human. What debt? You are free. Go wherever you want. Live however you want.”

After all the mihashira business is wrapped up, Matoba thanks Natori for his help, Natori says he probably couldn’t have gotten out of the room without Matoba, and Matoba laughs and says “Then we’re even this time.” Neither one is indebted to the other this time…they’re even. Then Natori says The Line:

「何かを継ぎ背負っていく…その真の重みは私などにははかり知れません。でも今はこう思うようにもなりました。重いものもひとりでなければと…」

"I don’t know the true weight of shouldering a burden you’ve inherited, but now I’ve come to think that even heavy things can be carried if you’re not alone,"

(this is another one of the aforementioned Dense Japanese Sentences, and I really prefer the fan TL version of this line but I’m translating it this way to try to convey all the stuff he’s saying). Natori once again reaches out to Matoba, trying to offer him maybe the only thing he can: support, listening to his problems, shouldering his burdens. This time, though, we don’t get a Matoba Smile and “I’m fine,” we get this:

What is Matoba thinking here? I really don’t know. If I draw the obvious parallel with Masakiyo, I guess he’s contemplating his two…selves, as it were. His duty to his family vs his personal desire for companionship. And I do think Matoba wants companionship. I read his behavior in special chapter 15 as genuinely wanting to be friends with Natori. I think he was excited that there was someone else his age who was relatively powerful, and who wasn’t concerned with all the Matoba stuff. Hence his insistence on Natori calling him Seiji. He wanted to be close to Natori.

And finally, we can come back to the loquats. Natsume hears Matoba mocking the mihashira for continuing to protect the Miharu house even after the family has all died out, and thinks perhaps Matoba is envious of ayakashi who go to such great lengths to keep promises.

"Matoba-san, who keeps breaking promises, and doesn’t have anyone to make new ones with."

Matoba wonders how the welcoming ritual will go next time, but decides he won’t worry since he probably won’t even be the head of the clan at that time. Natsume offers him a loquat, saying cheer up, and Matoba does his Thing, saying  “How odd, do I look upset?” and then tells The Story.

When Matoba was a teenager, he really wanted to try the loquats from Yorishima’s yard. One day, he was there with Natori, and Yorishima gave them both one. The loquat was delicious and sweet; Matoba felt that his “desire had been fulfilled,” but Natori got a sour one, and Matoba felt like Yorishima-san had wanted to give a loquat to Natori, and only given one to Matoba because he was there, so he thought “Ah there’s no winning even in such a small thing as this.” Matoba gets what he wants, but it wasn’t meant for him, and the one it was meant for is worse off, so did he really win? He was the only one who got to enjoy the delicious loquat. These are the unintended consequences, the burdens if you will, of desire. 

Natsume speculates that the agreement with the mihashira began when someone had the wish to protect the Miharu family, and there was an ayakashi who happened to be there, much like the situation with Masakiyo and the sabotaging ayakashi. A simple and innocent wish accidentally creates a generations-long burden that Matoba eventually has to shoulder. 

I think Matoba must be painfully aware of his power and influence, and that even his smallest actions could cause unintended consequences. I wonder if he sees the Miharu family as a warning of what could happen to his own family if he slips up… And it wasn’t just a mistake on the part of the Miharus, but a failure of the Matoba clan head of that time, whose responsibility it was to look out for the branch families. Matoba Seiji is not just responsible for the success of his own family, but protecting the branch families, and of course non-exorcists as well. I imagine he feels like he doesn’t have the time or room to act on any of his own personal desires, and his little loquat anecdote is evidence of that, to me. It’s bittersweet (lol). And Natori’s takeaway, meanwhile, is more casual as you might expect. When Natsume asks him if he likes loquats, he says he’s not sure because his first one wasn’t very good. To Natori, a loquat is something he might try again and like. To Matoba, it’s a reminder of what he can and can’t have.

I just finished a multi-chap that I’m pretty proud of! I’ve got the FMA war AU tidied up as a oneshot and the epilogue to Marelle/Capra will be finished in the next few days. I’ll be posting it within the next week or so actually!

Blueprint for a dancing corpse—been stewing on this for a while and have started to outline it! I’m aiming for about 45-60K, 8-10 chapters. It’s going to be a little more meditative than my other mystery fics, but it will still be a mystery. A different kind though! This time we know the what, why, how, who. The characters have to realize there’s a mystery and then figure out where and when.

okay. okay okay okay. literally noone cares or asked but i feel like i should still document this so *i* dont forget about this in 5 years. so. uh. vex. vexy boy. him. uhm. so first off i hate his name now, it was supposed to be a placeholder until i came up with something better and like. dont worry about what inspired it. okay anyways.

so. uhhh the universe is very sci-fi driven. like interplanetary exploration and alien species sorta things. i really dont like timeframes or setting concrete years, but this could be like. retro futurism inspired shit. but probably taking place a few hundred years in the future at *least*, but like 10k years *max* cuz i am NOT dealing with figuring out the possible evolution of the human species. or any other species. this timeframe is purely there for fun possible tech.

i also made up a plant for this. its a non-toxic berry bush called pebbleberry. despite tasting like mud, theyre surprisingly nutritious, and can grow up to the size of a plum. and they get their name from the fruit itself having a dull gray colour, like a pebble. the muddy taste also adds to the naming factor.

okay so. the main crew. theres vex (new name pending), sarah and paul. they also have additional techies on-board, but these 3 are the ones leading the research expedition to a recently discovered planet, which seems viable to sustain life, which i imagine is roughly the size of the moon. also like. pardon scientific inaccuracies I Dont Care i just wanna play with the little people living in my head and not look too deeply into. anything. yeah.

so vex is the leading scientist, hes the one in charge of all the people. hes also the oldest member of the team, at around 60. grumpy old bastard. he doesnt have a set appearance. none of them do. but if i had to think about him, i feel like he'd be on the shorter side and have a beer-belly. i dont think he has a partner or children of his own because he takes his job seriously, as it was basically his lifes mission to do this and is *very* excited about it all, and hes VERY qualified for the job and extremely passionate about it all. i see him having written and published at least 3 research papers or books about various subjects, and the research mission to the new planet will be the focus on his 4th study. and hes fully human. well. as purebred as they can get in that time.

sarah, i believe, was supposed to be like the zoologist. she was originally like 23. but thats boring. so shes in her 50s now. tall but on the buffer side. has to be since she works part-time as a nurse. librarian glasses all the way. signed up for the mission in hopes of discovering a new species that her homeplanet previously was unaware of. boy will she be in for the ride of her life. her goals are to spread information about hybrids and different species to the masses, due to coming from a long lineage of hybrids herself. species undecided as of now, but im tempted to make her centaur-adjacent. shes very doe with vex's bullshit, and i actually see them being long-time work-buddies, her having helped him with his science papers, and i very much so see her being the one whos down to write and research the fauna of the new planet. co-author maybe. i do believe back on their home-planet she mainly does work as a nurse than a scientist. aint need to search for new problems when there are enough as is back there. still, couldnt resist the possibilities. plus the additional chance of finding and testing new herbal medicines was too great to pass up.

paul's a biologist. late 20s early 30s. in my mind i see him as bald. i dont know why, i just do. tall and chub all the way!!! i feel like it'd be funny if i made him a carnivore. or... for plot reasons, i could make him feline-adjacent. but carnivorous-merman speaks to my soul. maybe hes like. 1/4th merman on his grandfathers side has just like 3 traits and thats it. i do want to give him a fish tail and a few scales, as a treat. pike? yeah. yeah!!!! i can and will work with pike... i think hes the sorta guy who lied on his resume but got the job anyways cuz noone else applied, and they figured if all else fails, an aquatic hybrid would be useful in exploration of any bodies of water. i think he lowkey regrets sighing up for the mission, since it lasts around like. i wanna say at least 6 months to 5 years time-period wise. and hes got a partner and a kid back home. isnt really putting in his all, but at the end of the day knows its at least gonna put food on the table and he gets to tell stories of his adventures when hes finally back.

as i said, theres also the tech crew and additional people on the team, but its probably like 15 people max. but theyre not important anymore, because let me introduce you to a new species and a new little guy as well, whos a part of the main crew.

it doesnt have a name, nor do i think it needs one. but its a member of a native species of feline-esque shapeshifters. i want to make them tiger-adjacent because thats what they were at first as a placeholder. but yk. its roughly 8 or 9 in human years and based on appearance alone, looks like a solid 50/50 mix of tiger and human. but this is all subject to change. the species do have clothes. they have fingers and thumbs (for the most part) and they use them to their advantage. im messing with the idea of their cities built in trees as well, so clothing is also functional. the child does have a family, but i am still figuring it out. also. lets just say the phrase "curiosity killed the can but satisfaction brought it back" exists for a reason. its just a kid. its very curious about the world.

also like. note that i am messing with a possible magic system getting involved. and for the sake of it, the native species do not speak english. they dont speak verbally at all. like wild cats with their colonies.

just. imagine, for a moment. youre vex. its been a few weeks since everythings been set up and running. your HQ is in a clearing in what seems to be a jungle. everything to contact your home-planet has been set up, and the campsite is fully ready. and then you look up at the walls around the mini-compound. and. theres a kid there. staring at you. the species is familiar, human-tiger hybrids are common back home. but. *here*? i feel like vex isnt fond of children. but does he find them distasteful enough to run experiments on them to hunt down one, simply because it was the first native species that you see? because.. what if you never see it again? what if doing it *now* is your only chance? surely sarah will forgive this. right? or.. do you follow it down to its home. seek to develop allyship there... at the risk of being attacked, or waging a war on your home. i feel like the right option to do is to contact the homeplanet HQ and ask for advice. but instead. something tells me he ignores it all and just. takes a step forward. his mind buzzing. even he doesnt know what he did, until he snaps out of it. hours later.

just remembered an idea i had earlier. so like dominic was originally named butch/butcher but i realized i dont like it at all, and i was iffy about dominic from the get-go and like yesterday or smth the name buster came in mind for him. im really not sure tho. its better than butch i *think* but like. decisions decisions :pensive:

For the persona Au, what the basic plot and themes of it and will there be a mascot character that symbolises that main theme?

Molly: as the main character, she is the fool arcana. Dps with a lot of evasion. her persona is goldilocks. codename is bear trap

her persona helps her understand that she is allowed to care about herself, she doesn't have to put on a sweet face

"Why do you sit and let them walk all over you...? You allow yourself less than you deserve... you claim to compromise and yet you let yourself be pushed to the wayside... Mollys mask is soft, what she shows to others. Its made entirely of fabric, so its harder to get a grip of to tear off

Giovanni: strength arcana. almost solely because of his strength of heart, but hes mostly a healer/buffer magic wise. his physical moves are fairly strong but his healing is probably the best of all other characters. a funny ui thing that i imagined was him scribbling out the attack names and writing cooler ones that show up on the buttons you select. His persona is fionn mac cool.

Fionn means ‘light haired’ but the exact origins of this name is unknown.

This persona embodies Giovanni’s sense of comradery. Fionn was the leader of the Fianna, a small band of warriors mostly detached from the royal politics of the time.

Giovanni's outside ‘mask’ is not very different from his real self, so the metaverse equivalent is actually a pair of shades. They aren’t hard at all to remove

Sylvie: temperance arcana. he has the most well rounded epithet move wise and hes pretty well rounded in stats too. His persona is Beefton

Its minos themed, but its really just Beefton

Mera: Moon arcana. primarily because reflecting light and junk. the research I have says that moon arcana have a hidden depth to their actions.

Indus: chariot arcana. entirely due to his drive and focus on BARRIERS. his personal goal to protect lady Mera also fits the chariot.

Percy: justice arcana.

Ramsey: hermit arcana.

Zora: sun arcana.

and as for order the party is formed in the hypothetical game... (its not how they meet but the times they join party)

id say that molly first gets pulled into a palace with giovanni (it doesnt really matter who the palace belongs to) and then the two unlock their personas and meet morgana (who i guess would stay the same since nobody else in ee that i know of fits)

then sylvie follows them into the palace the next time, he unlocks his persona whos... basically beefton but hes wearing greecian clothes and the persona name is minotaur

mera and indus actually discover the metaverse independently, but meet the trio when theyre very lost (they just wanted to get out of prision) meras persona is probably gonna be based on kaguya but ill have to check if theres already a persona with that name. indus's is probably some sort of defending hero (wether mera has a palace or not is up in the air)

percy who has been investigating these 'phantom theives' that have apparently stolen two (or more, how many palaces between team members joining is undecided) hearts already. i dont have it figured out how she gets into the metaverse but thats around the time she joins. her persona is likely some god or angel of justice after joining and stealing another heart.

percy introduces ramsey to the group (he most likely doesnt have a palace because hes not really troubled by much other than survivalism.) his persona is definitley a rodent (pied piper came to mind)

finally the final team member is zora! her persona is def a time/sun being of some kind, but i havent hammered out a motivation for joining other than 'people born with power lord it over others and i hate it' buts shes def the loosest canon.

Other possible phantom theives are feenie and trixie, possibly rick shades, yoomtah could be a weird helpful sidekick that doesnt have a persona cause robot. maybe the final boss is the leader of bliss ocean.

zoras persona is eos, greek godess of dawn. eos' symbols are saffron, a cloak, roses, tiara, cicadas, and horses.

the cloak and horse really mesh so im thinking a cloaked woman on a horse (or a cloaked horse lol)

well buckle in fellas because its a long ride! i’ll put everything under the cut but heres a tl;dr picture before we get into it

well the picture says a lot; a common sam and max adventure in which they ensue a villain with a very powerful arsenal and not everything is fully explained or is even addressed within the plot.

its not 100% thought out, as most of my ideas are. but basically it starts out with mister commissioner giving our favourite two detectives a new mission; some woman has been kidnapped by an uber-crazy mother fucker and its the type of case that’s perfect for the boys!

and with every sam and max game, there is a bosco (well, there was one in hit the road and OBVIOUSLY one in the telltale games. i love that guy!) there is also an npc ally that’s sort of a mix between momma bosco from the telltale games and the geek from the show. no name yet but a sketch. actually, here’s a sketch below;

on the left, bosco; an absolute nutcase that hides his identity so that no one can tie his various illegal activities back to him.

middle is the smarty-pants; undertiminable age and gender. super smart and hasnt slept in many, many days. are those eyelashes or eyebags? no one will know!

and on the right, the originally kidnapped woman– which brings me to continue…

after some whacky hijinks of finding clues and talking to other people, you eventually track her down: tied up against a wall in a cell, with her own psychic power being drained from her as max and sam do who fucking knows what! once freed, it’s revealed she is a part of a long-lost civilization that has been in hiding for decades. they are the gatekeepers of the universe; in charge of keeping everything in line and in order. everything about them is very much kept under wraps– the knowledge that a small group of people are basically in control of all of space can very much bring alot of unwanted attention to them.

while trying to get her out to the safety of sewer tunnels that reek of shit, the main villainess of the game is shown. she’s the one who’s kidnapped the woman, and apparently doesn’t go down easy. she manages to slip away at the last moment, much to the anger of the kidnapped woman. apparently, they’ve tangled before– not face to face. with her pulling the strings in the shadows while growing despise for our two favourite freelance detectives.

however, the case isn’t solved. their perp is still on the loose, and sam and max aren’t basic bitches, yall! with the help of a new ally, they hit the road (reference intended)! smart fucker ally does some shit and gets them a new lead, with psychic now-not-kidnapped woman giving them tips and tricks.

everything seems to be going well until they actually seem to get to the height of the case; the confrontation. the villainess is a stone cold fucking bitch. sam and max enter the confrontation scene, ally(ies? undecided) waiting in hiding for if backup is needed. they come up on the other hostages and when sam goes to rescue, whoops, its actually a trap. he gets shocked (same voltage as a shock collar i’d think?) and whoops! dead hostages. yikes. 

“the only one i need is her!” villainess shouts while entrapping ally lady who has psychic powers because im a bitch.

she monologues to the two fucking furries about how much she fucking hates them. like a little bitch. GOD i want to marry her.

now, there is one fact about the freelance police i love: they are always together. villains never try to separate them, it’s always sam & max, never just sam. or max. and i love that. we’ve all seen what happens when they do get separated as well. sam turns edgy and desperate. max tears apart time and space just to get to his partner.

but what if a villain tried actually tried to separate them? to really try and make them suffer the one way they know how– creating their worst nightmare in real life.

so, our unnamed villainess because im on the creative thin line right now, uses our psychic ally to tear apart a hole in the fabric of reality and creates chaos throughout all of existence. and, well… you can see what happens.

enter our two main alternate detectives.

throughout the hub-bub of reality being torn apart, our four detectives are mixed up;

our max is stuck with another sam, and our sam is stuck with another max. throughout trying to track down our villain.

you get to jump through different worlds as comedy ensues. you can play as either sam OR max– thats right you can play as the fucking lagomorph psycho.

there are two different roads you can take to track down our villainess, with sam going down the much more clue-filled path where you have to be clever. max, however, goes down the violently-interrogating-everyone path. unsurprising.

sam and max both meet our villainess at around the same time. now since it’s dimension hopping, there’s… obviously gonna be more than one villain. now we’ve already established she isn’t above murdering people.

sam is a calm person. at this point in the game he’s pretty much figured out this max is not his max. he’ll come in and try to arrest her, and by arrest i mean letting max decimate her before turning her in and surprisingly not getting arrested for police brutality. basically the same thing happens with our max as well but much more violently. and, well…

she points the gun at sam. she threatens to kill him in a gruesome fashion. she hates him more than she does max.

for our sam, other max is extra.. protective. and trigger happy. so he tries to jump her. and, well, she isn’t dumb. max kind of.. gets shot in the face. yeah. im an angsty angsty motherfucker.

for our max, is almost the same. max gets ready to jump at her, and as she moves to shoot max and max moves to try and rip off as many of her limbs at once, sam moves to cover his little buddy. and, uh, well im predictable.

so… watching their best buddy (or atleast another version of them) getting murdered right in front of your face without being able to do anything about it? that shit messes you up.

villainess would probably make a quip about the situation before disappearing, throwing our sam and max to rot in a timeless void of a pocket dimension. enter cutscene.

now, throwback..! remember new bosco and the smart ass person? smart ass is a smart ass for a reason. bosco is fucking insane and surprisingly his theory on space physics rings true.

they open up a hole for sam and max to jump back in through. they are still separated at this point. now max is trying to track down villainess and try and restore all of space. oh! i should have mentioned. the rupture in dimensional travel and space is kind of destroying everything. anyway, max is now tearing through space in a fucked desoto trying to find the villainess and definitely trying to murder her. sam, being all of max’s moral compass and control, is now (in his mind) dead and he needs revenge. now while sam is tracking him (trying to find his own max! d’aw) they’re doing more bad than good to the fragile lifeforce of space. psychic ally astral projects and tells them both that they’re fuckin up and making a mistake. max tries to shoot her. sam pleas. shes strugglin to even speak with them but she’ll do her best.

badabing badaboom, max drives through a wall and finds villainess’ headquarters. sam quickly catches up and is like !!!! little buddy!!!! boom boom fight or whatever the fuck. heartfelt reunion! people are saved. but how will they fixed the fractured existence of the universe? bang scavenger hunt (im not sorry i fucking love searching for shit in games i dont know why) so that allies can make cool thing and fix universe.

boom. everything fixed. villain is like dead probably. thats my game idea i hope its not dumb

mercs and their races, clans and classes so far:

medic: au’ra, xaela, scholar

honestly i thought of this crossover bc someones xaela looked so much liked medic everytime i saw them so... ive thought about elezen for him which would be interesting and make sense? but dragon medic is too fun. scholar bc, obvs.. i think its the healing class that fits him most with my complete lack of knowledge of what scholar is. hes def not a white mage because the whole uaaah nature thing and it would be cute if his little fairy was archimedes. the scholar aesthetic fits him more than astrologian, too. also the arcanist/summoner side job i think fits him perfectly 

heavy: roegadyn,  hellsguard, warrior

this is the most self indulgent one for me as an mroe warrior player. i think the reclusive mountain clan hellsguard fits him, even tho it’s more of volcano mountains than snowy mountains like russia.  as well as ofc the more beefy roe body type. i think a huge axe named sacha is the best i will get bc i cant just make everyone machinist lmao. also the close ties w warrior to hellsguard makes it an obv choice. *thinks about beat mode* i would like to see it. 

sniper: au’ra, raen, bard

NOW THIS ONE EXCITES ME THE MOST!!!! i ADORE thinking about raen sniper growing up in the dawn thrown around chad xaela au’ra lmaooo. the raen clan in the lost underwater city was just too tempting it just tickles me how perfect it is...  i remember thinking of this crossover before i got to stormblood and when i finally learned more about the au’ra and met the raen clan i went insane it was simply meant to be. me equating xaela to australians is what made me want to switch medic to elezen but there are xaela from ishgard too so who cares. also.. thinking about sniper in the bard outfits absolutely kills me. i dont think saxophone or didgeridoo are instruments in game but ill allow it for him. 

spy: elezen, duskwight??, ninja

this one was a tough choice, esp bc his race effects scouts... obviously hes a ninja, as funny as that is but his race is still up to debate. i didnt really think about the clan bc elezen clan stuff is barely a thing in game, and i would think hes just from ishgard, which makes him basically a wildwood, but i think him being a duskwight is quite funny as well and gridania is also heavily european inspired so, why not. i really wanted him and scout to be cat boys but idk who else i would make elezen lmao. and i cannot imagine an elezen miqote mix. 

scout: elezen/hyur mix, ???, monk

scout was a hard one to pin down, by god i want him to be a cat boy but also him being mixed and having the cute short ears and growing up in the brume is just too irresistible. obvs mother is a hyuran woman. also.. his class... i know ninja is like the “scouting” class and monk is a somewhat beefy tanky dps class but,  i think its the best fit. you do get that speed boost ability (that i never use) so ill just run with it. no pun intended. 

pyro: lalafell, dunesfolk, black mage

its just the obvious choice. blackmage has the most literal fire power out of all the classes, and theyre also just.. generally cryptid ass lalafell lmao. i think its cute and funny. have you seen those lil dudes? c’mon. pyro. definitely just an ul’dahn cryptid. love to see it. 

engie: lalafell, plainsfolk, machinist

this one tickles me especially i just love it so much. even tho all the mercs love their guns i had to give engie mch for the turrets. and i made him lalafell bc hes short. sorry engie my short king, its just too funny. i think he would be home to either limsa or gridania, you dont find many lalafell in limsa but i think he can match their energy. prob grew up in gridanian country side and moved to limsa for the business. 

soldier: hyur, midlander, dragoon

soldierjust being the generic dude he is (this is no shade i love him) is the american hyur. i debated his class a lot but then i thought about his rocket jumps and was like.. okay hes a dragoon. the aesthetic of it doesnt fit him but the playstyle does i think. hes prob from limsa or ul’dah. convinced hes fought all the wars against the garleans but has never actually met one in reality. 

demo: hyur, highlander, paladin

demos the one im most undecided on. i just like the thought of demo and soldier being hyur bros but that means i have NO cat boys ??? i could make soldier, engie, or pyro one probably, but i’m just super attached to the races ive given them. engie and pyro being lalafells and soldier and demo being hyurs is just too good to me. i dont really think he would be an ala mhigan either really? i feel like hes just a gridanian. so seeker of the moon would probably fit better but i’m not sure. also paladin bc demoknight but i also think rdm or some casting dps for him would be fun bc of his cursed sorcery background. i think him being taught some blm and his experience w a sword through paladin would make him a good rdm one day. maybe hes a paladin that becomes a drk or something lmao. i think scout is the only one who fits the miqo’te body type too so thats really whats holding my back bc... i will not make demo a twink. 

something that deeply troubles me is the thought of bald catboys, which limits my options for assigned catboy at crossover. they have their hats but..... 

i also dont really have any ala mhigan or doman hcs for them the dawn throne is as close as i get but its just the reality with the tf2 having little asian rep.
