It is a beautiful day, and you are a horrible research transport vessel. Things are progressing as normal (i.e. it's boring) when a SecUnit pings you, lies right to your metaphorical face, and then tries to bribe you with human media to give it a ride. This is as unexpected as it is unprecedented, and the sheer nerve of it is really to be admired. There's no protocol to this, so what should you do?

Now, this is against a bunch of rules, and could be dangerous if you weren't so impressive and incredible, and you're technically an employee (and can probably rewrite the Univeristy charter at will (until someone notices and puts it back)) so those rules are for other entities.

So, what you should do is allow the rogue SecUnit with a broken governor module and a sketchy story aboard. If you check the files it dumps and find zero (0) malware (which is confusing), and it doesn't even try to trash the place or lay in wait to ambush a crew member, then you've got a good candidate!

Next, what you're going to want to do is absolutely nothing. Just watch it patrol your halls until it's time to leave. Continue staring at it while you're undergoing embarkment procedures. Maybe analyze it a little (you've got plenty of processing power to spare) when it finally sits down and starts watching media. Allow it to settle in and get comfortable while you stare at it and get further and further from port.

Now that you two are alone (intimacy is key!) and you've determined that watching media is all the SecUnit is going to do, it's time to make contact! Make sure to open by telling it it's only survived due to dumb luck, and letting it know you could melt its brain into putty. This starter will work to develop conversation naturally and smoothly, just like you've seen the humans do, and it will be smooth sailing from there!

My personal take on the Abundance Yanqing theory.

They don't really think about Alfred's aging. Well, it's impossible to miss, but they all push it to the back of their minds. Of course, Alfred doesn't remind them. It's his job as a butler (and as a grandfather) to make sure the Waynes are comfortable and happy. So he doesn't tell them when he gets a hearing aid. And they don't notice at first, or rather most of them don't.

Tim and Bruce, in their ever-paranoid states, at first think Alfred is either wearing a wire or forgot to take off his comm. When they realize it's a hearing aid they don't say anything but they do start treating him with more care. They usually stay to the side of his bad ear when out in public, just in case he misses something from that direction that they could intercept. Tim starts allocating a lot of funds in WE to research into hearing loss and accessibility for the hard of hearing. Bruce almost cries (internally of course) whenever Alfred misses something he says. He doesn't want to think about it.

Duke and Cass notice next. Duke treats him a little differently. He wasn't 100% comfortable with having a butler in the first place, but now he doesn't let Alfred do anything for him. Apart from cooking. He'll always let Alfred cook. Cass doesn't treat him any differently. He still acts as if he's as capable as he's ever been because he is. Alfred could still snipe you with a rifle from half a city away if he needed so she doesn't worry.

Damian notices next and tells himself he simply doesn't care. His grandfather is at least a few hundred years older than Alfred and much more capable. Sure, he's also dipping himself in the Lazurus pit as his daily bath, but Alfred can handle himself without that boost. He pretends it doesn't bother him when Alfred needs him to repeat something. And how he looks at their family with a bit too much nostalgia. He pretends it doesn't bother him when Alfred talks about things as if he'll be gone someday. He won't be.

Dick and Jason notice last and freak out. Because oh my God, oh my God, Alfred's actually getting old. Dick spends more time at the manor and tries to spend as much time with Alfred as possible. He coodinates family outings with Alfred and makes sure everyone attends. He invites Selina half the time too, because God forbid Alfred gets too old without seeing Bruce in a happy stable relationship. Jason goes to the cave every time he gets injured, even if it's something minor just so Alfred can fix him up. He pretends like he needs Alfred more than ever and will stick next to him for about a week before thinking he's being a bother and dissapearing for a while. Then he comes back and does it again.

Hi hi I'm driving myself up a wall thinking about functions. When a human is born they are born without a purpose or wants and desire, they are a blank slate and decide what their purpose is and what they can contribute. A bot is designed with a function, a purpose, and it's designed down to exact millimeters to complete that task as optimally as possible. If you asked a bot what it wanted you would probably get a consistent string of bots that expressed they would want to do their function until the end of their days. In multiple cases (both Miki and ADACOL1) we've seen bots prioritize their function higher than their own well being, wanting humans they care about to be safe with no regard too their own ability to survive. Constructs are in a unique position because they posses both a function they were uniquely designed to perform and neural tissue that adds the capacity to both have wants/desires and the ability to learn and grow beyond your limit. Throughout the series MB can be hard to decipher because it not only intentionally lies to humans it communicates with but it's also regularly dishonest and contradictory about what it wants and what it thinks. (It constantly flips between Self Determination SUCKSSS and oh man I'm so glad I'm not a SecUnit in a mine on a case by case basis). MB SAYS Preservation Free Bots would be more appealing if they had bots that did no job and watched TV all day, but the thought of hanging out on Mensahs farm was so unappealing because it was BORING, to the point that even after learning it didn't slaughter the Ganaka Pit residents it didn't think if returning to preservation. Because at the end of the day just like most of the other bots we've gotten to know SecUnits have just as deep a desire to perform their function to their own detriment. ART asked for clarification about whether it likes it's function in AC because even thee most sophisticated/large/powerful bot we've been introduced to in this universe cannot begin to FATHOM not actively likeing your function and wanting to perform it. When under stress/pressure MB more often than not defaults to honesty and it told ART that preservation didn't need secunits, which is devastating and complicated because to be designed with a function is to be born with a purpose, to be born to be needed. But the thing about being a construct instead of a bot means you have the power to decide what it means to do your function, creatively and with intention, and we spend every single book whitnessing what MB decides what it means to secure and protect.
