Question for the Heretic (2024) fandom

- Spoilers for sure so be careful -

I’ve been thinking about this every since i watched the film. Everything about it, even the ending, i think i understand and have a grasp of. But there’s one thing slipping me and its been bothering me for almost a week now.

Right before Paxton and Barnes choose the door they’re going to walk through, as a final attempt at getting on Mr. Reed’s good side, Sister Paxton laughs and says “you have a beautiful house Mr. Reed. Did you build it yourself?” Or something along those lines.

Mr. Reed smiles and says “My wife built it.”

Up until this point, it’s understood that any time Mr. Reed mentions his wife, he’s lying. From the start, he was lying about having a wife and her being home with him to make the girls comfortable enough to go inside. And that leads to the blueberry pie candle that tricked the girls into thinking his “wife” was actually baking a pie. Any time his wife is mentioned, he’s lying.

So when he says that “his wife” built the house, what does that MEAN??? Surely someone had to make the house the way it was and it’s mainly implied throughout the rest of the film that Mr. Reed did all of that. I mean who else would have need for a layered torture basement, lights and locks set to timers, and a room made entirely to look like the inside of a church?? Its not like he bought it like that…

And then after going through the doors when the prophet first enters with the pie, Barnes and Paxton (and me too honestly) thought for a minute that she was Mrs. Reed. Maybe she was at one point but i feel like if that were the case, that would have been a big reveal. But Reed only ever refers to her as “The Prophet” and then of course she dies and gets quickly replaced.

Then i started to wonder whether or not he meant it figuratively. If he did have a wife once, maybe something happened to her or something she did or said in the past led him to do all his research to discover the One True Religion. So then when he says “my wife built this house”, it really means that her existence and/or past actions led him down this path, and her indirectly creating and becoming the foundation for “this house” or for his ideologies and the reasons for his actions (hopefully that makes sense).

Or maybe he was messing with them. At this point, the girls know that theres no wife. And Reed knows that they know. So is him saying “my wife built it” just a rude jab at them? Or a joke? But then whats the point of that other than to be weird and confusing (thats very on brand for him though, I cant even lie). And again, what does it mean?? Is it his way of saying “well duh obviously i built it. Who else do you think, my wife?” That would’ve been funny if he said that but he didn’t say it like that. So im inclined to believe that its not like that.

After that point with the prophet, there’s genuinely no other significant mention of a “wife” for Mr. Reed.

Another thing that struck me as odd was the constant reminder of his lie. Him drinking from the cup and mug that say “hubby” and yet no paired ones that say “wifey”. He wears a wedding ring, and i can accept that he does all of that to trick his victims. But even at the end of the film when he’s clinging to life and crawling across the basement trying to get to Sister Paxton, Mr. Reed is STILL wearing the ring. Clearly the facade has been broken, he doesn’t need to trick anyone anymore so why not take the ring off? It just feels so intentional to me for him to have it on the entire time, especially when the mention of his wife (or lack thereof) was so significant at the beginning.

As you can see, it’s been absolutely killing me. I’m probably looking way too far into it, and no one else seems to be that interested in this single line. But in a movie like this (and any A24 film to be so honest) EVERYTHING feels intentional. Especially the script. So there’s no way this just doesn’t mean anything. So if anyone has anymore insight that would really be beautiful and beneficial to my mental health because this is seriously driving me crazy.

honestly for a moment i was going to say his mask but i genuinely think that would be a deal breaker for him since it kind of acts as a comfort and security thing for him. even if hes not wearing the mask around you, dont take it. now his hoodie or one of his shirts... thats a different story.. would rather you ask him, though, but he does find it a little sweet that its because you missed him.. mind you he thinks so lowly of himself that he might even be a little shocked that you *miss him.. might let you keep on his shirts! might have to wash it though and patch up a hole or two but its nothing major.. though i dont think he would let you keep one of his hoodies, he has way less of those than he does shirts and he kind of needs them to keep warm.. also the hood comes in handy.. for things.. will expect you to return his belongings when asked, will not take any excuses since they are his belongings and he cant really waltz into a store and go shopping

okay so this one is a little funny since i do personally hc that his clothes are just a part of his body for the sake of the post lets turn a blind eye.. theres so many options for you.. his shirt (sleeves! long and floppy!) or a spare sweater than hes claimed... hmm.. i think regardless of what piece of clothing you've taken from him he would be thrilled that you miss him THAT much! he rarely goes out, in fact i dont think its often that he goes far from where his music box is.. gotta stay in decent range, you know? but the point still stands... you miss him? i think that actually does wonders for his abandonment issues, since it reassures him that you care about him and think of him when hes away. probably scoops you up in his arms and hugs you, likely wrapping his arms around you like a snake. offers to never let you go, and kind of sticks true to that until you need to tend to your bodily needs

First of all I want to say that I'm glad you asked because I've actually been thinking about this!

I have a major(MAJOR) turn off for actual incest in fanfiction. Maybe because I lived through homestuck and people fucking love incest in that fandom, but I cannot read it without getting squicked out. Faux-cest though doesn't seem to give me the same problem and I think it's because there's always an undercurrent of "this is pretend" when done right, it feels porn-y, fake. I think it's because (in my mind) faux-cest falls under the "humiliation/degradation" kink, there's an overt power dynamic there that feels... different from actual incest fics.

Which also? The amount of people who have DDlg/MDlb kinks in this fandom is insane. Every day I see people calling Price "daddy" and I just... I'm gonna be so honest with y'all I hate seeing "daddy" in a fic, I don't mind caretaker doms but I just can't get into age play or the uwu cutesy way some of those fics go. But that's just me.

All that to give me some credibility in telling you: I don't think it's the cod fandom at large, but maybe just the writers who all follow each other and seem to get the same brain worms at the same time(I am guilty of this).

I think for some people there's an element of "I just figured out how to write this kink and I'm making it everyone's problem" and for others it's a "this seems popular at the moment let me throw my hat in the ring." Personally I had a faux-cest dream that I didn't particularly enjoy, honestly felt more like a nightmare, but I figured other people would see kink in the horrific so I popped it up on the blog.

Anyway I don't think you have to be "freaky enough" or even put yourself through reading a kink you don't enjoy, there's a reason I've been putting trigger tags on all the faux-cest stuff! I want people to be able to filter it out. Hell, a lot of it squicks me out, and I've written some of it. I don't really see it as any more prevalent in the cod fandom than others though. I mean every fandom has a decent portion that jump straight to incest stuff, you may have just managed to avoid it fairly well.

fleshcousins can and will react to being referred to negatively

not only in this instance with gnarpy does fleshcousin argue with gnarpy, it also emphasizes words like how someone irritated would. like hello?

chat fleshcousin literally tells lampert to kill himself after being insulted. there is no conversation elsewhere where fleshcousin gets told to kill itself to learn this. also before the threat it tries to insult lampert. thats not a parrot thats a very insulted and very salty creature.

in the first interaction with spud, the fleshcousin seems to be talking to itself and then appears to get irritated when spud is like "wow i could have ended up like you guys"

in the second interaction with spud, it seems to actually correct him and then, to me, appears to do its equivalent of an irritated grunt when spud is like "you're just like a personal diary!!"

the above is more tangentially related but fleshcousin seems to not only be genuinely irritated by unpleasant's existence, but then proceeds to also use language of others that it has learned. i find it interesting that specifically gnarpy and infected are used here, as gnarpy is the one who has the most irritated dialogue to learn from, and infected is the most related to unpleasant

2. it knows how to communicate discomfort/pain

ok i know this sounds weird but trust me. in most animals that can be trained to use words to communicate, it often takes A WHILE for them to accurately use language to mention pain. normally they learn stuff for things like food first.

for this one, the second and third line are my focus. the first one is pretty clear in the distaste for the snowball. however, the third line reveals not only a negative reaction, but trying to joke about it. "kb what is the joke" well you see my non-fleshcousin-brained friend, the joke is [as best translated as possible] "is it already winter?"

the flash beacon is what we're really here for though. not only can it associate bright, painful light to something it already knows, it A: communicates that it hurts and B: is able to recognize that you control it and asks you to stop hurting it

the reason why that is Huge is that most animals don't as for you to stop. they either run away or fight. when they ask for things to stop, most commonly its with another animal in the same species with their (body) language.

I know your Chrysalis x Cadance x Shining Armor art was probably just for the lols, but honestly…I could legit see this working as a ship?

Like, let’s be honest, if there was ANY character in this show who would be poly, it would absolutely be the Princess of Love (all that love for just one partner? Get real).

And it could be a legitimately interesting dynamic too! I could see Shining being onboard with Cadances partnership while also still being a bit hesitant because it’s, ya know…Chrysalis.

But then he ends up warming up to her in the end and the two become maybe-sort-of friends (with Cadance TOTALLY making some gentle nudges behind the scenes to set up some platonic bonding moments for them).

Like, idk, I just feel like it’s an idea with a lot of potential (both comedic AND genuine) and I’d like to see if the fandom took more of a crack at it.

Could also just be personal bias though, because as much as I am intrigued by Cadance x Chrysalis as a ship, I always kind of dislike how Shining Armor is left out as a result (he’s just a lil wife guy man, don’t do this to him🥺).

I just realized how ridiculous this whole ship war is. We don’t have any solid proof about how any of these characters feel. We don’t know if Gwyn likes Azriel. We don’t know what Elain thinks of Lucien, or what Lucien thinks of Elain. We have no idea what Elain feels about Azriel. The only thing we actually know for sure is how Azriel feels about Elain — that’s it. We’ve barely seen inside Azriel’s head, yet everyone is jumping to conclusions and assuming the worst. People are making up wild theories and fighting like children, even though we don’t have any of these characters’ POVs yet. It’s honestly insane. The one thing we do know is that there’s clearly something going on between Azriel and Elain — that’s been obvious for a while. It was always going to happen as we read through the books. I’m not saying nothing could happen between Elain and Lucien — it could — but right now, it’s just Azriel, Lucien, and Elain. That’s all we have to work with! So people need to stop adding all this unnecessary drama to a story we all know is headed in one direction. It’s honestly sad to watch so many people convince themselves that the stuff they’re making up could actually happen. Did anyone seriously think Azriel was getting a book next, or even Gwyn? Come on.

Let’s talk about the complete lack of reading comprehension in this fandom. How can people seriously think Azriel is some F-boy who only cares about sex? It’s honestly wild how much people have assumed the worst about him. I read that bonus chapter, and when I saw the reactions, I was genuinely shocked. Where are people getting all of that from? I actually understood Azriel’s point of view, even if it wasn’t worded perfectly. And don’t get me started on the Elain hate. Yes, she’s quiet, and sure, some people find her boring, but Azriel is the exact same way and no one’s coming after him for it. People hated Nesta too, but after her book, most fans either like her or at least respect her. So why isn’t Elain getting the same treatment? This fandom is so hypocritical, it’s honestly unbelievable.

This whole shipwar was ridiculous 4 years ago when it first started.

Whilst I slightly disagree with your point about not knowing how elain/lucien/az fully feel - as there are concrete hintd and buildup to display their feelings, I fully agree w people jumping to the worst conclusions about Azriel just because of his bonus

The “love triangle” has ALWAYS been between Lucien, Elain and Azriel. Its not even a love triangle at this point, as Elain isn’t torn between Lucien or Az. Putting that aside - poor Gwyns character has just been dragged into this situation by her “stans” despite the fact she showed 0 interest in Azriel - as a way to be the perfect love interest for Azriel. Everything Elain is not. Bcs Elain is hated & flawed whilst Gwyn is loved and perfect.

And yh sure. Anyone can sit back and say, “the books can go in any direction” - but thats willfully ignoring Sjms foreshadowing, clues and the very clear direction the books are going in. What antis don’t understand is - in this point of the story - not “anything” can happen. Sjm has set herself a clear arc with an obvious ship and all im going to say is - its not the ship where the two characters can’t even stand to be around each other.

I said this before - antis need to stop inserting their interpretations/opinions into canon. For example, Eluciens saying Elain shrinking back from Lucien is bcs he gets her all bothered and attracted to him, their evidence? Some characters find Lucien attractive so how can Elain not find him attractive and bcs she does it makes her uncomfortable that she wants him soo badly. THAT is the definition if inserting YOUR opinion onto CANON when its not backed up by the text. Just cause Lucien stans find him to be the most handsome doesn’t mean Elain does. Eluciens know elucien isnt a deep couple. Its surface level hence why they have to make up all this “lore” and “drama” about them which at a point gets embarrassing.

The fact that a quarter of this fandom genuinely believe a secondary character we JUST met will get a book before an ARCHERON sister who was one of the MAIN side characters in the og series is just…funny and unbelievable. “Oh but Gwyn appeared sm in acosf!” Omfg didn’t acomaf, acowar and even acofad focused on Mor yet was her book next? No it wad Elains and they LOVE saying that Gwyn appeared in ONE bonus therefore she is the next protagonist yet remain quiet when you tell them Elain appeared in TWO bonuses where she was focused on for some of it. TWO.

I think for me is the fact that antis - both Gwynriels and Eluciens - have twisted Az to be this disgusting, disrespectful and toxic male as a way to not ship elriel YET turn around and ship him with Gwyn? The way they make Az sound is so icky and abusive yet with Gwyn he’s an absolute angel? With the way antis have turned Az to be - the way they believe him to be, if any of it was true, he would not be a Li. That is NOT how an author would want you to perceive one of their love interests.

You know what it comes down too? Even if they pretend its not true, I will die on this hill, they see Elain as someone weak and meek, someone who won’t ever be able to handle Az and his toxic ways. Whereas with Gwyn, their perfect little mermaid will “challenge”, change and heal him bcs she is stronger. She is better then weak little Elain. That is what it comes down too, even w elucien stans - Elain is Luciens arm candy. His prize for the suffering he has endured. Someone to be pretty and there for him whilst he conquers and rules.

I think any normal person with nothing against Elain or a weird obsession with Lucien understood where Az was coming from and immediately linked it back to Feyres musings in acowar. Could Az have worded it better? 100%. But its not like he had any time to prepare. He was reeling, put on the spot, just hurt his crushes’ feelings and confused. But you got the gist of what he meant.

This fandom goes through a cycle and just never learns.

People hated Nesta -> hated Nessian cause Cass deserves better -> Cass interacted w Emerie? Some believed they’d be a couple -> Acosf released, Nesta lovers rose to the top and people loved Nessian until HOFAS

I think at a point, after spending so long in this fandom. It just becomes funny and infuriating. I think its why you should alwYs find you safe places in this fandom. Not to risk swinging a bat at a hornet’s nest but how do you feel about the percy jackson series then?

not a bad YA series, i have no gripes with it on that end. but it doesnt really have anything to do with greece on a fundamental level, its just sort of using the gods as gimmicks or aesthetics. by that i mean that the series couldve pretty easily swapped out the greek gods with another pantheon, or create its own (though that would take more worldbuilding and wouldnt market as well- half the fun of it IS the fact that its a spin on a mythos everyones kinda familiar with. i dont think gimmicks are bad and its fine to use some pre-established things as themes to connect your story to) and it would stay functionally the same. it just doesnt really bother to engage with the culture it took the gods from in any real way. the closest its gotten is casting jason mantzoukas as dionysus (based).

overall i cant say this is a PROBLEM i have with the story itself, its more so just what i feel is a missed opportunity. i mean, there are 2 italian characters and they go to italy bc i feel like the author may see it as interchangeable to a degree lol. i simply wish we couldve been thrown an actual bone i guess, but as its stands its not a meaningfully greek series in any way. i dont think its saying anything actually deep about the mythos beyond its own narrative (which is fine, it doesnt have to)

MY MAIN ISSUE honestly is how the fandom thinks they know greek mythology after engaging with what is ultimately a very shallow interpretation of it. well researched, mind you, but Not That Deep beyond references and aesthetics. the fans think they just read the hellenist bible, but it is in fact just some YA fiction! nothing wrong with YA fiction, but dont use it as your sole reference point if you really actually are interested in hellenism. i think learning about the culture (of the time and the people today as well) is an important aspect of that too! percy jackson doesnt really give you much of that, because ultimately its not really trying to. and thats fine. i think you just gotta know that lol

sending you this ask because i'm personally trying to stay away from the mouthwashing fandom even though i liked the game, but i want to talk abt it - does it make you feel weird too how often fanart makes jimmy so much darker-skinned than other characters? i've seen him drawn even darker than daisuke. especially when it's him and curly next to eachother i see a lot of weird racial implications in curly being very light skinned and blonde and such and standing next to jimmy who is the villain and is drawn unkempt, tan-skinned and dark-haired. i know some of it comes from their models themselves but i've seen it exaggerated to the point where it makes me rlly uncomfortable, especially as a native person who's even an SA survivor. like having darker skin doesn't make you more evil, jimmy's a bad guy because of what he did. and ik curly is designed that way because he's like the "perfect model guy" who's actually not perfect and fucked up a lot! there's a lot behind the design choices at play of course. it just kind of makes me uncomfortable how exaggerated people make it in fanart, to the degree where i think most don't even realize they're creating racial bias. what are your thoughts?

i honestly cant say that this is something ive seen myself, whether it be due to just not seeing fanart like that or my likeliness to connect those dots, but it really doesnt at all shock me that that'd be something going on. quite honestly my interpretation of unkempt appearances in fanart was based off a toxic masculinity-esque headcanon (ex self care, grooming, and appearance being seen as typically "feminine"), but that combined with skin colour can definitely raise some eyebrows. as you said, i dont really think this lies in any conscious racial bias. and i obviously dont know these people, but id be willing to bet it boils down to "i think he'd look better tanned" without giving much thought to how that translates to his role in the game.

jimmy's appearance in relation to curly's is something i think of quite a lot quite honestly, and as you said a lot of it lies in their relationship in game. in terms of skin tone though, the difference really isnt all that big

a good natured skin tone change is a REALLY unfortunate combination with people's unwillingness to analyse jimmy's motivations as much as curly's, writing it off as "because he's crazy" or whatever else (which brings ableism into the question but thats a different conversation.) compared to curly, often seen with a pretty unchanged design, who is mostly seen as someone who has a good heart and strong leadership skills, who made a misguided decision which ended up being unintentionally catastrophic. this ends up being dramaticised, as you sorta said, into a standard (albeit unintentional) good v evil dynamic, which is obviously tremendously boiled down compared to the motivations or decisions of both jimmy and curly.

(also also this isnt meant to say jimmy is entirely the product of his environment, he made did shitty and dangerous shit on his own terms. i just think its irresponsible to completely write off his environment/ life leading up to the game as something entirely unrelated. boiling his actions down to just "because he's fucked up" ultimately ends up taking away from the humanity of people with similar mental disorders, painting them as dangerous. again, different and very nuanced conversation i dont really have the right words for.)

like i said, very unfortunate combination of (what i would think to be) a well meaning design change and a lack of understanding of the nuance of jimmy's character and motivations. which is, of course, something you're more than likely well aware of.

this doesnt take away from your point tho, objectively people are in fact still making the violent + dangerous man darker skinned while leaving the "nicer" one the same. this is certainly not the first example ive seen in fandoms ive been in (looking at you danganronpa + genshin) and more than likely wont be the last. its tough to bring up the topic to people who do something like this, as it seems so innocuous at first glance (see: me not even seeing something like this at first), and id imagine people would be quick to be pretty defensive seeing as, again, they more than likely didnt mean anything by it. pointing out unconscious biases like this can lead people to think you're accusing them of something, which is almost never the case. typical situation of becoming defensive when racist behaviour gets pointed out, relying on them not being *a* racist, which ive admittedly done myself at one point or another.

and to get this out of the way, give jimmy whatever skin tone and appearance you like, you can do what you want. i just think you should also take into consideration what message is being sent if jimmy, the "monstrous" character, is the only character you make darker skinned and unkempt.

this is very messy and honestly very presumptuous of people's intentions and such, but you can understand my main idea. im really glad you're interested in my thoughts on this n wanted to hear what i had to say btw :3

it’s not intentional in the way of like “oh let’s have sex so we can makeup”, it started gradually as the days passed and her silent treatment hadn’t let up at all like his had. With Annie being even more frigid than usual, all he can do is watch her and THATS precisely what started horni.

and when its not a villain npc posing a threat? youve jumped out of moving vehicles before or jumped into ominous voids without giving it much thought

cannot handle the constant anxiety, but shes too soft spoken and pushover-y to speak up about it :(

please... dont... shes already trying to get used to the circus and what to expect, and she knows that youll make it through the other side thanks to your digital body... but thats not going to stop her from wincing when the big bad grabs you by the leg and starts flinging you around

your confidence greatly drowns out her lack of it- shes cautious and tries to take things slower to avoid danger, and then theres... you... and you sometimes accidentally drag her along with you... and sometimes not

youre simply trying to help her put herself out there...! even if the outcome isnt the best for the two of you all the time...

honestly he thinks its really funny- and he will be encouraging you to go run into every sign of danger in every adventure that has it- cue your belongings and other assorted items rolling and flinging across the screen while youre getting your ass beat

hes... almost impressed with how ballsy you are sometimes, you are the walking definition of fuck around and find out- whether it be for better or worse

will make bets and dares with you to see how far youre willing to go just to go try to get something done.... someone may need to step in to put a stop it to. oddly enough theres no real malice to it, at least after you guys get closer... its mostly morbid curiosity and the confidence of "well you cant die or get hurt in the digital world" talking
