hi there sorry for the random question I have never emgaged with OnK but all the buzz around the ending has intrigued me. I found your blog really insightful and enjoyed reading your meta so I guess I just wanted your opinion; With the dust having settled, do you think the series is worth reading right now, as a newcomer who has been spoiled on the ending? I know there's a lot of controversy and missed potential with the conclusion, would you still say it's a worthwhile piece of art to invest in? Sorry for the like I know how this is a hard question to answer for a total stranger I'm thinking more broadly do you think someone who was not reading it as it was serialized would still get something meaningful out of it despite it's circumstances. So!! First of all before anything else, I'll say that if you're at all sensitive to depictions of suicide in media that verge on romanticizing or glorifying it, I would think really hard about whether or not to engage with the story. Obvs only you can make that call for yourself and I'm assuming you feel comfortable going into it if you're spoiled on the ending and still getting a vibe check anyway, but I feel like it would be irresponsible for me to not lead with that.

Apart from that, I do still think there's a lot about Oshi no Ko to love! This comes with the caveat that I'm the kind of person who can still get really deep in the paint with something that has elements or a lot of things that I don't like or even actively dislike if there are enough things that I really, really vibe with. I've mentioned before on this blog that even tho I am Wonder Egg Priority's biggest hater and loudest critic if you get me talking about it, I also unironically consider it one of my favourite anime despite everything about it that makes me so pissed off I take poison damage ticks - the elements of it that speak to me speak to me so strongly and it scratches a particular storytelling itch for me that I'm always starving for. I also just really love the characters.

Oshi no Ko is similar for me on a much smaller scale in that while I do think the ending is a huge wet fart, I only think it really drags the manga down to like a 7/10 for me compared to like a 9 that it could've been if it stuck the landing. I think Mengo's art is incredible and only gets more and more refined and evocative as the series goes on and that when Akasaka hits, he hits. And like... ultimately, I feel like the series only really falls off in the second half of the Movie Arc which leaves you with 80 chapters of a fantastic manga, 40 chapters of a pretty good manga and 40ish more chapters of a mid-to-good manga that ends on a bad note. Basically, I feel like enough of Oshi no Ko is straightforwardly good and enjoyable on its own merits even if you know the ending is whatever that it's worth at least trying out to see if it scratches any particular itch for you, too.

I also think binging the manga actually solves a lot of its pacing issues, too? A big problem with the Movie Arc as I experienced it was feeling like it was dragging out forever, constantly going on breaks and just having no real indication of when it would end. But if you could read it at whatever pace you wanted, it wouldn't drag quite so much, even if it doesn't necessarily solve the rest of its broad strokes pacing issues.

So I guess my answer would be yes! I still think OnK is worthwhile as a piece of art and that you might even get something out of the ending that I didn't, just because I've seen enough people that did vibe w/the ending that I can't necessarily predict what you or anyone will think of it. All I can really recommend is that you give it a fair shot with an open mind to just enjoying it as it's in front of you and see where it takes you!

Fillmore x Gnarly HCs 👍👍👍!!!

•They went to the same high school together. Fillmore had the biggest crush ever on Gnarly but never really knew how to go about it especially cuz he thought Gnarly was soooo cool and way out of his league. Either during high school or after, Gnarly kinda just vanished and Fillmore had no idea where he went :/ but even years later he still thought of him fondly and had feelings for him.

•Even though Fillmore was just mostly messing around with the alien and ufo stuff, he still really likes to watch the sky at night. He’d convince Gnarly to come with him to watch the night sky, just the two of them, every so often. He still does scream when he sees something ‘unexplainable’ in the sky, making Gnarly rolls his eyes and explain to him whatever it actually is.

One time Fillmore wasn’t paying attention to the fact that Gnarly was smoking next to him while he was looking up at the sky so when he suddenly sees smoke come out of nowhere, he flips out about how the government or whoever is trying to shield their vision from the truth 💀

•Gnarly likes freaky weird people. Thats why he’s best friends with Grim after all. They keep things interesting. It’s no different with Fillmore.

•Grim doesn’t like Fillmore at all really for a couple of reasons but the main ones being that he has way too much energy, is fidgety and he can get too mushy with Gnarly and it makes him feel sick seeing people being sweet to each other 😷 Grim and Gnarly have bickered a few times about inviting Fillmore over but Gnarly usually gets his way. If Grim really isn’t having it, Gnarly will just leave the house to hang out with Fillmore.

Fillmore is indifferent about Grim. He feels a bit bad that him coming over can cause arguments between them but Gnarly tells him not to worry about it.

•Fillmore and Gnarly have similar tastes in just about everything like aesthetics, music, and movies. Tho Gnarly slightly prefers for horror movies and music to be on the more extreme side.

•When Fillmore has extra cash, he’ll buy Gnarly pocket knives he thinks looks cool in gas stations. When Gnarly has extra money to blow he’ll pick up lighters with cool or funny designs and random alien themed things for Fillmore.

•When Gnarlys amazing solution of saying “uh…. Kinda cringe” doesn’t work at calming Fillmore down, he slowly learns how to actually help him when he gets all worked up. What usually works is him holding one or both of his hands and trying to talk him down (he’s always gonna be incredibly awkward at trying to reassure him things will be okay but just the thought of Gnarly trying to genuinely do his best at helping is usually enough to snap Fillmore out of his manic ramblings)

•They’ll paint each others nails black and sew band patches into some of their clothes together.

•All I’m saying is that both of them are very freaky 👅🔥 in bed. Gnarly likes to get rough & that’s more than fine w/ Fillmore 😏😏😏

•It will take Gnarly a while to say he loves Fillmore. He doesn’t throw that word around with just anyone. He’d probably finally say it after beating himself up over feeling like he isn’t the best for Fillmore or during something less angsty like.. I dunno. One of those nights they are looking up at the stars together.

•Fillmore borrows Gnarlys clothes every now and then. Yes they smell very bad, he doesn’t care. He likes the smell of the clothes more than he should actually. (His favorite thing of his to wear of Gnarlys is his trench coat)

•Gnarly is kinda meh about Fillmores little ufo group. When he’s dragged along to one of the meet ups, he’s just looking at his phone and mostly only gives his full attention to Fillmore. Hes nice enough to the others but they just aren’t really interesting to him lol

reviewing the v3 death portraits

(i'm gonna assume tsumugi was painting these personally, because it's more interesting that way).

i had a very clear memory of these being A) in that lovely danganronpa pink, and B) distinctly spray-paint-esque, and apparently neither of these things are true?? weird. anyway, i can't find any specific symbolism for either of these - but that's fine! they do a good job at establishing a baseline for the other characters to deviate from.

oh, ryouma...this one makes me SO fucking sad. he doesn't even get the care of a personally painted X, just a fucking stamp. it really drives home tsumugi's casual exploitation of him - he was never anything special to her, just a convenient way to round out the cast with an easy victim. i can so clearly see her stamping it and then sliding it off her desk as casually as any other paperwork. a completed task.

as for kirumi's - hers looks like it was done with a paint marker, or at least a thin paintbrush held steadily and carefully. the neat, thin lines really suit her. (the little smudges clearly betray it as done by someone with less skill than she had, though).

after the BITTERLY atheistic conclusion of ch3, angie's portrait feels a bit mocking - but i really don't think it was intended that way. a sweet, affectionate doodle with absolutely zero thought to how insensitive it is to the ACTUAL HUMAN WHO DIED is so in character for tsumugi, isn't it? same for tenko - the little pinwheel curls might be a bittersweet memorial from a true friend, but from the person who led you to your death?

anyway i thought for ages that the splatter on kiyo's portrait was mimicking the fire from his execution, and i'm still like 80% sure that's the truth, but looking closer - doesn't it look like a mouth and nose right above the right side of his hat? the rest of it could be sweeping hair, too...i see faces in everything tho so maybe i'm making this up sndhsgf.

miu's probably doesn't require any explanation, but just in case you didn't know - XXX is an old-timey way to mark "adult" things, sometimes alcohol or drugs but most commonly sexual content. it's very appropriate for miu and i'm sure she would've loved it, lmao. (i've also recently grown fond of the theory that miu was intended to be the first killer, and tsumugi disliked her just as much as kodaka does - which makes the thought of her angrily scribbling out the Xs VERY funny).

i can't find any particular meaning to gonta's - i thought maybe the forking on the left line was deliberate, but it seems like the same type of smudges everyone's has on closer inspection. oh well!

ohhh, kokichi's. this one is LAYERED and INCREDIBLY PETTY. a checkmark, really!? it's not the dismissiveness of ryouma's stamp - tsumugi personally checked him off her list. and just in case you weren't sold on how much she hates him yet, it's the only mark to cover the dead person's mouth. ouch!! (i've also read that checkmarks can mean 'incorrect' in japan when they mean 'correct' in the west, which is another contradiction to send him out with).

i think kaito's is pretty obvious - it's two little comets. again, would be sweet if it weren't coming from tsumugi. also the top one looks like a middle finger LMAO

That warprize Hob/Destruction ask brought a different Destruction thought to my mind again that I've been having for a while.

Does Destruction have a female form? In my hc he does, and she, too, is called Ollie (man's short for Olive?), because it just fits. She's similar to his male form like Dream's is to his own; she's heavy set and drawn to the arts, she's tall and big and joyful and hairy and loves singing out of tune. There's a few differences tho.

She's more freckled, a lot, in fact, and unlike male Ollie she prefers short hair. She also likes sculpture better than painting. The most stark difference is that she's… not exactly shy, but more guarded? She's had a lot of bad reactions from people and while she knows her worth, she will have none of them from Hob, thank you very much.

Meanwhile Hob is standing in the doorway to his kitchen where he found her shifting around a smoking ruin in a pan with a spatula, and tries to regain control of his eyes so he can go look for where his chin dropped, because he's sure it's fallen all the way down to the lower floor and into the ice tray of the bar.

He spends a few days just gazing at her like a moon-struck calf and then carefully goes about courting her, like he did Ollie. He cooks for her and gifts her stuff he thinks she could use for her art. He takes her out to art exhibitions, heck, maybe he goes all out and books her a venue for her own art show. He drowns her in compliments and soft things (because he's discovered she's got a thing for textures.)

It's only when she tells him a story about a past boyfriend gifting her a razor that Hob absolutely loses it. He kisses her gently but thoroughly, and very firmly tells her that her slight beard is adorable, actually, and that he hopes that whoever told her that thigh hair is a disgrace got at least punched in the face and dumped, because nuzzling into that would be the very definition of heaven, thank you very much.

Hob gets his nose broken and his neck cricked by having his face sat on later that day. But you know what, he's had worse and Ollie has very capable hands and can probably set him right again.

Fem!Ollie is an absolute darling - popular with the New Inn clients, particularly the women who come in in the evening and relax at the sight of the large, smiling woman at the bar. It's her honour and privilege to pick up creeps by the scruff of their necks and hurl them out into the street, and Hob always watches with wide eyes and a fluttering heart.

She wears the same kind of outfits as her male form does - soft plaid shirts, baggy jeans, big boots. There's a whole drawer full of Hob’s old tshirts that she's worn and stretched out. Hob loves to see her in his clothes: the gap between her waistband and the hem of the tee where he can see her soft muscular midriff. And, because Hob is just a guy at the end of the day, boobs.

He loves having a girlfriend who can lift him up and sling him over her shoulder. He can't understand why any man would be insecure about such a thing! He loves being her little spoon (and rolling over in the middle of night to be her big spoon too). He loves sitting on her lap and playing with her short, soft hair.

And of course she pegs him. Of course she does. She fucks him so good, he even goes out and gets a double ended strap so they can fuck each other simultaneously. However bruised and slightly crushed he ends up, Hob adores sex with Ollie. Can't get enough of it tbh. Although he should maybe wait for his nose to set again 👀

☀️ SUMMER READING WRAP UP ☀️

i read like 30+ books in july & august & wanted to do a quick little summary of that here bc i read some absolute bangers. in no partic order + these are only the good ones bc i dont need to talk about [title redacted bc im nice]

headshot by rita bullwinkel: i got this in a bookstore near my sister's art uni & you could tell it was an artunibookstore bc there were so many books i'd never heard of but this one is SO up my alley. it's about a group of teenage girls in a boxing competition and follows each of their matches from the perspectives of the girls. they don't talk to each other so they each have this really skewed vision of the other person, especially considering that there's a competitive aspect to what they're doing anyway & the fact that none of these girls feel like they're respected in their day-to-day lives. if you're a teen following me you NEED to pick up this book, i felt like it so perfectly encapsulates that feeling of being 15-17 esp if you're socialised as a girl. everything is both grandiose and gritty at the same time, these girls have FEELINGS pouring out of their ears and it is so so so well written. absolutely loved it. also look at this cover:

big swiss by jen beagin: this is kind of in the same vein as headshot & generally in the same vein of a lot of general fiction i've been into lately. i've known about it for a while but did wonder whether it was worth getting it / whether it would do more than just scratch the itch that i already had scratched after reading headshot & let me tell you it absolutely did. big swiss follows a transcriber of a new york sex therapist who accidentally meets and becomes involved with one of his patients. greta, the protagonist, has got a lot of weird habits and thought-patterns but since the book is written from her pov it's easy to go along with the idea that this all isn't THAT weird until it really starts to be reflected back at her through other people when big swiss starts talking about her in the therapy sessions greta transcribes and onwards. it's really good, i also love that greta's a bit older than a lot of the protagonists in books like these that i've read. i also love this cover with the painting on it but i personally had a copy with an illustration of big swiss & greta's dogs (even tho piñon was brown on the cover, not black, but i'm letting it go) which was very cute as well.

chouette by claire oshetsky: iykyk. this book is really good for many reasons but let me introduce it by saying it was good because it handles a VERY tricky subject matter and does so with incredible grace. chouette follows the birth and childhood of chouette, an owl-baby which came about after Tiny had sex with her female owl lover in a dream. (i don't have my copy with me rn but the opening line is something along the lines of "it was a shock to me when i discovered i was pregnant after i dreamt i had sex with an owl lover, especially because my owl lover was a woman." <- that but like. good writing. i wish i could remember the phrasing better) in this book the concept of an "owl baby" is actually a stand in for having a child with mental development issues. chouette is an owl-baby in a world of dog-children, that sort of thing. i was very cautious when reading this book bc it's told from the pov of tiny, who doesn't always love being a mother (and i'm sensitive about that topic so i didn't really know how i'd respond to this) and also the subject matter in general can go wrong in so many different ways. chouette is really good though, at no point does tiny think of her daughter as being anything other than who she is. she's not some genius savant nor is she broken & in need of fixing. she's simply a baby / young toddler with her own needs and desires and her own personality. very sweet, very emotional book. music plays a big role in this book (again, iykyk) and there's an accompanying playlist which i ended up not listening to bc i didn't have wifi but i do also like that aspect of it.

we go around in the night & are consumed by fire by jules grant: pros of moving in with someone who used to work in publishing & book selling: i now have access to a bunch of new books i've never heard of before. we go around in the night is an incredible book about an all-female gang in manchester (at least i think its manchester, i do not recall) and how they deal when one of their members is shot and killed. the plot and concept themselves are really good but what stands out especially is the writing style which is in part stream of consciousness and in a larger part just very particular to the pov character & how their mind works. we follow the povs of the head of the gang and the daughter of the woman who was killed. it's very emotional, very rough to read bc it deals so much with grief and also it's so intimate because with the way it's written you just feel so deeply inside the characters' minds. really cool.

fantasy break: i reread all of my branderson books (or at least the cosmere ones), so that's the first mistborn trilogy, warbreaker & the first 4 stormlights. not gonna summarise those indiv bc i'm pretty sure none of my followers on this blog give a fuck but i am actually very pleased to have re-read them bc 1. i love them and 2. it's made the scope of the cosmere a bit more understandable again. also i get very emotional about fantasy & cried like a baby at the end of mistborn & also at the end of oathbringer. and at the middle of rhythm of war. when adolin's in shadesmar with maya? yeah. sobbing.

little, big by john crowley: i listened to this on audiobook every day for about 2 weeks as i walked my dogs and did my chores and what have you. this audiobook is 24 hours long and usually that's my limit on audiobook length, anything longer than that & i start to check out mentally, but i could honestly listen to little, big forever. if you don't know it's this multi-generational novel about faeries and a family involved with them tangentially through the contact one of the early women had with faeries when she lived in the uk. it's a book about an american family though and though the faeries are ever-present in the actions and consequences that befall this family, it's so much more about love. familial love, romantic love, love for a place, love. it's absolutely incredible and read by the author who has the most wonderful accent (maine, i believe?) which just transports you even more into the world of these people. i'm generally all for a novel read by a trained & skilled narrator, not the author (reading is a skill) but john crowley does a very good job and anyway i didn't mind it when voices sounded alike because you understood who was speaking anyway just by what they were saying and anyway it's a family so it's okay if they sound similar. truly such a wonderful experience, i really loved this book.

emma louise i have a question. i was a big trc fan like from the start (like 2012) and have always been a big gansey girl but i tried to start the dreamer trilogy like 5 times and could never get very far into it b4 i got bored then i was like well i’ll just wait for the series to finish and see what people think um. we all know how that went. so with all of that in mind do u think the dreamer trilogy is worth reading or is my surface level understanding of what happens and the beautiful headcanons of my incredibly gay and autistic mutuals enough? like does that trilogy have any value on its own merit knowing how it ends or is it better left to my fwiends

my short and sweet answer is no.

my long and annoying answer would be. I think the series has its moments almost entirely w its new characters. I think jordan and hennessy r some of the most interestingly written and dynamic characters I've read in a long time . I think the story they bring to the table is truly fantastic and it is just . it's so good and beautiful and I think that 100% it is worth reading for them and them alone. I think the expanding of ronans lore is frankly nonsense and I liked everything better when he was just a bitch who brought stuff out of his dreams bc hes cool like that. that is just a personal thing tho ig. I think declans and matthews stories r very interesting and the expansion of those r very cool to see and experience and I think there's a lot of exciting stuff to read for them specifically and their relationship is fucked up in a way that makes my chest hurt . if u r wanting to read this series for any of the other trc characters there is absolutely fucking nothing there for u and specifically as a gansey girlie just know it was like being fed worse than bread crumbs . I was being fed flavored air but flavored air like the way lacroixs r flavored . ronan and hennessy's relationship is beautiful in a way I cannot put into words frankly I think i grew an extra heart reading their scenes.. bryde is very funny as a character he gets on my nerves every single time he's there but he really is very funny . women actually kiss other women in this series and there r many many painting scenes that kind of feel like my soul is being flipped inside out and u can see inside it a bit and it's bleeding pretty bad. YAAAAAAYYY WHOOOOO . all that said tho I personally. would read the first two books and that is it. I would not touch greywaren w a ten foot poll I would not even entertain the thought of reading that fucking book. the new characters get shit endings and the old characters get shit endings. it genuinely made me upset that I had ever picked up even the first two books honestly it ended that fucking bad.

to summarize. hennessy and jordan. jordan and declan. ronan and hennessy. and declan and matthew. those relationships and respective storylines were the most interesting to me and I think they slayed. I would just imagine ur own ending for them tho bc literally anything would be better than what every single fucking character got. so . yeah I would read the books just never the last one not even the blurb on the back

They are massive ... and incredibly beautiful. He has the solar system painted on his ceiling ... anyway ... right hand side is a room with high shelves and a very long and curved desk. Simimar to the study one but bigger and all those things! And gemstones! - Oh my goodness! When the sun hits those shelves right, the whole floor and the large desk turns into a kaleidoscope!

I'm baffled how he still remembers their faces so well.

as for your question, im actually not very big on christmas movies, but here are some that are very dear to me and that i end up watching every year:

home alone and home alone 2. THEE CHRISTMAS MOVIES OF ALL TIME. A HOLIDAY STAPLE. maybe im cheating by putting both of them together, but when i was a kid (and here im gonna show how truly old am i) we had them on video tape and we would always watch them on christmas day one right after the other. if i had to choose tho, i think i'd pick home alone 2. i know it's not as good as the first one, but for some reason it's always been very comforting to me (and i always dearly loved pigeon lady).

tokyo godfathers. i stumbled upon this movie completely by accident in my late teens when i was very into animanga and it immediately became one of my favorites. it's about 3 homeless people (a former drag queen, a runaway teen, and a grumpy alcoholic) who find a baby in a dumpster and try to reunite it with its family. it’s got humor, it’s got heart, it's about chosen and blood family, and most of all it's both very human and very magical.

klaus. it's the most recent movie in this list and consequently the one that has less sentimental value, but in such a short time it has become very important to me. it's hilarious, heartwarming and one of the most comforting movies i've ever seen. to quote klaus, "one true, selfless act always sparks another." that's the true spirit of the holidays to me and how i strive to live my life.

trading places. so fun fact.. here in italy our national television has been airing this movie on christmas eve every single year without fail since - i kid you not - 1997. i was 6 years old at the time. i am now 32. i spent 26 years of my life watching trading places on christmas eve. what i was doing yesterday evening? watching trading places. and just like me, so was every single italian out there. it doesn't even matter if we like it or not, that's not the point, it's just become tradition like setting up the christmas tree and it's the only certainty we have left in this country: on christmas eve we watch trading places (hashtag just italian things).

the santa clause. this is another movie that used to air a lot around the holidays when i was a kid. i've never particularly cared about it, but my mom ADORED this movie and she always put it on while cooking for christmas. once i got older enough to help her in the kitchen, it still kept us company in the background as we worked, so i inevitably ended up growing fond of it and it's one of those movies that to this day i make sure to find the time to watch with my mom every year.

do you use sarcasm a lot? i try not to. understanding tone/slang and sarcasm is a bit difficult for me sometimes so i just tend to not use it myself. unless I'm in an uncomfortable situation and then it just slips out.

vesper + goro. i think there's respect between them and maybe the slightest hint of a possible friendship that didn't have enough time to get developed. they both needed some time to trust the other for obvious reasons lmao but they end up in a quite successful partnership. but nothing more than that. they're both grateful to the other for saving each other's life and if goro would ever show up to ask for vesper's help she would gladly aid him :]

vesper + jackie. hehe ohoh..i think jackie was family for vesper. i guess the fact mama welles was so welcoming helped too. vesper never had a normal family life and didn't have parents for that long as well so every time anyone treats her even ONCE as a daughter/part of the family she turns a 15 y/o kid all over again. they complete each other, vesper is way more serious and responsible (and maybe a bit cold) which helps especially on jobs, while jackie is the one that reminds her to take life a tiny bit less seriously and that they should have fun too. they're both stubborn and hot-headed tho so that leads to them finding trouble 70% of times dksjfkfd. jackie was a confidant and someone she could count on, probably the only one friend she had when they first met, and losing him was incredibly hard

fenix + delamain. the thought makes me die idk jfdhfkjsdfn. fenix is the type of guy that would go 'do we really trust an AI to drive us around? DO WE REALLY NEED THIS?'. he'd prefer to drive his own car than let him do that for him. the distrust gets even worse when he hears about all the other delamin AIs causing mayhem around the city, he's can't stop saying 'I TOLD YOU SO' every 5 minutes. fenix doesn't trust delamain at all but he thinks that he can be..'funny' in a uncanny way, he won't admit this tho

fenix + rogue. OH BOY. these two can't stay in the same room alone or they'll start throwing hands. the dislike is mutual, fenix hates her bc of vesper ofc, he won't say it but it's clear..he has no other reason to hate someone he just met and that is now dating his ex. pure coincidence right? rogue hates him in return bc he's a complete asshole towards her every. single. time. little insults, little sarcastic comments, fenix can't shut tf up when rogue is around. they nearly fought once, rogue gave him a black eye (and then vesper broke his nose too...) bc she simply was so tired of hearing him talk shit. it doesn't get better AT ALL when vesper gets back with fenix for..obvious reasons. these two would kill each other if they could lmao

daniel + judy. these two get so well together, more than what vesper and judy have. they were coworkers once, kind of, daniel worked with mateo at lizzie's bar for a while so he had various chances to meet judy and talk with her. they are quite similar, both care about their indipendence and they both can't keep their mouth shut when someone is bothering them/doing smth they don't approve. they're good friends and judy is a regular client of daniel and nader's tattoo shop!!

daniel + misty. it was almost unlikely that they could become friends and yet. it happened. they would hang out together while vesper would go out with jackie and he would get sooo bored to stay all alone at home. daniel's first reaction when talking with misty was "she weird. a lot" which didn't stop him from talking with her tho. daniel is the kind of person that is attracted to everything he finds 'weird' or unsual, it's his curiosity probably. he doesn't believe in all the aura and spirit things misty usually talks about but he lets her talk anyway, he likes to listen to her talk so when he needs to relax he goes to misty. daniel lets her read tarots to him or do some 'aura cleansing' stuff while he paints her nails or she does the same to him. daniel is like a little brother to misty and she truly needed the company after jackie died, plus they both have such a sweet heart and know so much kindness that they would offer to each other and i love that for them
