Hi.....Do you mind if I ask you some random thing? I used to love shounen and shoujo manga equally....But ever since I found BL manga 3 years ago, my interest in shoujosei (especially het romance) decrese a lot, and what I search for is just the dynamic between mc (male) and male lead...I don't want to read mc (female) and male lead or mc (male) and female lead...

What do you think happens to me? Is it really weird?

It’s not weird. I think it’s pretty normal, honestly. I’ve been on Tumblr for years, so I’ve seen this happen to a lot of people, and I even experienced this same thing myself.

I went a few years only shipping M/M or F/F ships. A lot of times, the characters just have more chemistry than whatever romance is pushed in the text. Or, they have the potential for better chemistry.

It’s a lot more fun (for me at least) to ship characters who are narratively mirrors of each other. They can relate to each other’s experiences and bond over those experiences, and the type of romance built on interactions where they both grow to respect each other are interesting.

It’s very rare to see male and female characters be narrative mirrors. It’s rare to see male and female characters have similar experiences. It’s rare to have the respect between male and female characters portrayed in the first place, let alone seeing it grow at all.

Even if the only thing two characters can bond about is being the same sex, sometimes that’s just more than you get with F/M couples.

It’s difficult to ship traditional F/M couples once you find romances that you like that differ from those couples. It’s hard to enjoy reading the way romance portrays women, specifically, but it’s kind of hard to have an interest in male characters who like women because they are women. A lot fo the time, straight romance portrays the “chemistry” between two characters as being inherent because they are male and female, nothing more. They expect you to want the couple to get together because they expect you to be a woman who wants to insert yourself in the female lead or female love interest and they expect you to want romance inherently.

Of course, not all F/M romance is like this. It would be silly to think of it as all the same, just as it’s silly to think all M/M and F/F romance is the same. But, it’s easy to forget that there are F/M ships that are fun to ship when the overwhelming majority just start to feel like it’s the same dynamic every time.

So many people get tired of the way male and female characters are written in romance. People get tired of the very traditional way things are portrayed. People get sick of things that always seem to stay the same. And, sometimes, you just want the female character to have a bit of personality beyond their interest in the opposite sex.

It’s not weird to get sick of romance that sticks to cliches. At the same time, it’s not weird to find enjoyment in new cliches.

We’re all growing, all the time, and changing. You’re doing that now. Maybe one day you’ll rekindle an interest in F/M couples, but maybe you won’t, and there’s nothing wrong with that. For whatever reason you enjoy the couples you like, as long as they make you happy, then there’s no reason not to like them.

You aren’t weird or abnormal. People have been shipping men instead of straight couples for hundreds of years. There’s historical precedent. There was Ganymede and Zeus in ancient Greece, there were couples that came before then and there are couples that come after. How can you be weird when people have been finding M/M relationships more interesting for hundreds or thousands of years?

I think cis people should also be their gender of choice. Like, if you're a man, you should get to really enjoy being a man- have fun with it! If you're a woman, take the parts of womanhood that really deeply make you happy. I think a slightly more accurate description of Bisan’s ask is to stop or minimise all economic activity not in direct support of Palestine. Now more than ever, I would encourage people to donate to escape funds for Palestinians, to direct aid organisations like CareforGaza and the PCRF, and to buy e-sims as they’re running low.
