Would shifter Stanley be some flavor of queer? I feel like it would make a lot of sense for him to. Y'know. Not be completely cis. Because I noticed the alternate forms you drew, two looked pretty feminine. .... Or is it just an extra thing he did to hide his identity? (If so, was he uncomfortable with it? Why didn't he just make male bodies? etc)

I don’t really see Stan getting preoccupied with labels, he always just sees himself as himself. If pressed he’d probably say like ‘genders a construct kid’ and not really answer.

Ford probably starts to super overthink pronouns while talking to Stan (who frankly doesn’t super care what you call him) and is like ‘he, well, they, well uh, it, um, he?’ And Stans just like ‘don’t hurt yourself, poindexter’

I hope this makes sense! Again while I think Stan probably doesn’t have like a specific connection to any gender after having been many different genders sometimes for months at a time during the 10 year gap, I think he’s always like ‘eh, bigger fish to fry than trying to put a label on it’

I love the Gravity Falls fandom because, like, you can headcanon any character as trans in any direction with like. Three exceptions.

Uh, headcanons below cut I guess

Dipper? We can make a good case for trans masc and trans femme. I tend towards trans masc because he's a little guy and just like me fr fr, but like, I like her, too, I find her cute in the punt-that-small-child-(affectionate) way.

Stan and Ford? Well, they're identical and I've seen a lot of them both being transmasc which I love and trans femme Stan and Ford actually make me feral. I need to do some things with transfemme Stan and Ford actually, I've seen them floating around and they're so cute and wholesome. Old trans sisters to me.

Side headcanon, Stan and Ford are extremely accepting even if they're cishet. Like Stan to me knew queer people in New York who died in the AIDS crisis. Like he can name people on the AIDS quilt to me and the only reason he wasn't hit by it and didn't die to it is he had to move to Gravity Falls. And Ford has a weird conception of gender that's shockingly progressive because multiverse.

Soos, okay, well, I haven't seen trans Soos around but like. First of all, super neglected character (I say as I do nothing with him). And second of all we are SLEEPING on trans Soos. A couple of the reasons for transfemme Dipper hold up here, mostly being the going-only-by-a-nickname thing. But also like, Soos's abuelita seems like just the most tolerant person ever and would so just go "Oh. I have a grandson/daughter now." and move on with her life. And also can someone draw transfemme Soos because I have a vision and if you saw it you'd agree because I can't get over her but like I can't even describe it it's just. Transfemme Soos in a corset. Transfemme Soos putting on a skirt for the first time. You feel me? Oh, and nonbinary Soos, too, just like. Soos went from very cis to the most gender human being ever to me very fast.

The three exceptions to me are Wendy, Mabel, and Pacifica (and it's up for debate whether Pacifica's even an exception).

Mabel is always transfemme. She can't for the life of me be a guy and I can't explain why. She's either transfemme or cis. Sorry, that's a girl to me and she always will be.

Wendy is either a cis woman or a trans man, and probably honestly falls on either extremely-masculine-man or tomboy-cis-woman for me. I can't really see her as transfemme.

And Pacifica is trans masc to me. I don't even see him as cis, he's just a guy. A man. Alternatively, the reason he's one of the execptions is because I was working on Divine Falls stuff and I went "what if he's genderfluid lol" and then "oh wait that's actually cool" so he's either a trans man or genderfluid to me, but like. He's genderfluid in the "getting my tits cut off and taking hormones does not make my gender one thing, I am unknowable and my gender is whatever pisses you off the most" sorta way. (Unrelated I think genderfluid Pacifica would do great on Tumblr)

"okay listen this might already be in the queue but i sincerely believe the last three seasons of the show would've gone in a completely different direction if peter got that last little push away from his bullshit cop behaviour by neal pulling some grand romantic gesture for him + el. like, come on man, you've already come to peace with legality not being the same as morality after you ran all those cons and let neal cut and run, but he's so convinced the ONLY way to do good in the world is being an fbi agent that he like, actively makes things worse for neal (AND HIMSELF? AND ELIZABETH?) over and over again just so he can preserve the status quo of neal being his CI + while peter's an active field agent. would kissing about his devotion to their dynamic and neal's rehabilitation and peter's complicity in neal's dehumanisation by the state solve that? maybe not! but considering the alternative is neal fucking dying (he got better) about it i think we should give it a shot!

that previous paragraph was more or less me preaching to the choir wrt this relationship but still here's my pitch:

neal is essentially already the third in elizabeth + peter's marriage, with how much he lives in peter's brain during pre-series sequences, how INVESTED he is in their relationship (reminding peter of anniversaries), and then IN the actual series that only increases when he's coming around to their place all the time

each pair within this trio have supporting but distinct relationships w one another that they all benefit from (and they often need the support of all three dynamics to get through Issues™)

that one episode where peter ends up on the run w another fbi agent and neal gets paired up with that guy's CI, and there's just an unbelievable amount of parallels between the two pairs and their relationship, even after its established that those two are in a romantic relationship and peter and neal 'aren't'. like peter says he'd go to neal first if he was ever in trouble LIKEEE

fucking everything about the run up to the finale of season 2 where we hear over and over again that the only two ways conmen end up are with 'one last score' (which inevitably leads to the next, because they can't help themselves), or going to prison. OR, the 'true love' option, where an ex-conman is able to genuinely settle down and go straight (more or less). this 'secret third option' is literally even spelled out to us IN an episode about a trio of thieves (byron june and ford) who meant the world to each other!

neal uses the engagement ring he was GOING to give to his TEXTUAL 'true love' in order to pay for peter's ransom that one time and isn't even cut up about it??

also like the episode before that neal and peter switch identities (very well) and neal acts like elizabeth's wife, and the only issue peter (or anyone) has with it is that he's also committing the crime of impersonating a federal agent.

season three finale where peter asks why neal didn't run when he just got the score of his life and the first thing he says is 'you, elizabeth', before listing literally anything else. INCLUDING HIS CURRENT ROMANTIC INTEREST?

also the scene before that where neal immediately folds from his season long cat and mouse game with peter and hiding the treasure because elizabeth's in danger! and peter only believes he's not lying abt any of it bc it's elizabeth!

that one shot in the pilot where neal and elizabeth look up at peter and you can so clearly see he has a type.

literally everything about elizabeth + neal's interactions in s1. get you a girl who sneaks you into her house past dozens of fbi agents so you can talk to your handler personally about being framed for a crime that she has no reason to suspect you didn't do other than believe in your and her husband's relationship!

I love fem! Stan. I feel like a major difference would be Ford realizing his feelings for Stan and accepting them WAY sooner.

So first things first, I 100% believe Ford would be WAY more possessive of Stan. Especially when they grow older and puberty hits. When they were younger Ford was able to see Stan as just his best friend, his twin, the one person who seemed to understand him. Love wasn’t really something he cared about, not when he had Stan by his side.

But as they grew older and Stan started *ahem* maturing, Ford realized his feelings were maybe a bit less platonic than he thought. When she started dating, Ford would go mental. He would try to convince Stan that they were just trying to use her for sex. Anytime she had a date he would have to know when and where it was happening so he could make sure she was safe. And whenever they inevitably broke up, he would wipe away her tears and tell her how she deserved so much better. That they were idiots for thinking they will ever do better then Stan.

And when Stan would fall asleep, Ford would be so smug. Every break up just proves how it’s supposed to be Stan and Ford. He would have never left her for something as petty and idiotic as “holding out,” on him. Stan and his first time would be precious, something memorable and romantic. Just like how Stan likes it.

(Never mind most of Stans high school relationships ended because Ford was driving her boyfriends away with his possessiveness.)

And when Stan saves Ford from the portal? He goes absolutely feral at how well Stan has aged. She’s just as beautiful as the day he lost her.

Here’s some general head canons I have for fem! Stan:

- 100% chubby queen and we love her for it

- She secretly did boxing, but also did ballet because her Ma wanted her to

- Just like canon Stan (at least in my mind), she has been in love with Ford since childhood

- her homeless years were ROUGH, even worse then canon Stan’s (being a homeless teenager in the 70’s with no high school diploma is bad, being a girl on top of that makes it worse.)

- has a tattoo on her crotch (because I said so)

- still strong as hell, like she deserves !!

To answer: I don't, necessarily.

I've just always found scientist characters to be quite trans-coded. I love the idea of experimenting on oneself and altering ones own body, both in a divine alchemy and in a body horror way. Trans people are just so cool, haha! Ford and fidds could be trans in any direction they wanted to, and I'd eat that headcannon up, I don't care, so long as they're not cis XD

Plus, being trans myself, I find it enjoyable to project that onto characters. Even since I was younger, I liked to project onto Ford and genderbend him and shit as a means to explore my own gender. So, when I'm drawing him now that I've figured myself out? It feels almost obligatory that he needs to be transmasc. And, you know, while I'm at it, I may as well make Fidds trans too.

Although, I personally envision Fidds as more agender. ヽ(￣▽￣)ノ But even then, I don't think he really knows (or cares) about modern labels. At the end of the day, he's just him, and he wouldn't want anything more. He'll transition how he wants.

TLDR: genderbends, AUs, and headcanons are a tool for viewers to experiment with and explore new identities through characters, or create a character with whom they can relate to.

Hi forgive me if this has been addressed before! I'm a little new to your fem!stan stuff (I saw your ask reblogged by Boston and snuck out of the back of their foodtruck to send this) but I love the idea and was wondering does stan pretend to be Stanford when he falls in the portal? (If that is the route that's taken in the au at least) because it would be really interesting to see if constance would enjoy the freedom that comes with being a man but at the same time I think it would drive (incel) ford up the wall if he came back and saw his sister running a successful business out of his house. There would be this extra layer of tension as ford has to grapple with his own learned misogyny. Though I also imagine exploring the multiverse and seeing the way gender is explored or even ignored in other worlds would probably force him to have some realizations before hand but whether or not hed really allow himself to internalize those realizations is another story. Bros got an easy excuse to not analyze his own sexism since hes trying to hunt down bill

And then when he comes back and sees his sister is doing just fine would probably wound his pride a little bit. All those fantasies and unfair expectations of their roles hes built in his mind are forced to come crashing down once again

I'm also just kind of obsessed with the idea of constance finally learning how to be /stan/ in gravity falls because she never had the freedom and safety to do so before. I'm sure a large part of rejection of any femininity whatsoever came from not having the option to do so in the past. But then she watches the kids over the summer and sees mabel embracing makeovers and grappling hooks hand in hand. Dipper is insistent on being a "man" but never once tries to tell mabel she needs to be a "woman"

Thank you for passing by and sending me such a nice message, sharing your own ideas with me! and many thanks for the compliments too, of course ❤ That said, I'm afraid my answer will be a tad disappointing. Because, the fem!Stan I enjoy to imagine is cis, and I can't imagine a cis woman being able to consistently pretend to be a man for thirty years, without losing their mind (in the same way it's detrimental for most trans people to supress their true identity for a lifetime, non?). Especially, in the same way canon Stan is very masculine (with a sprinkle of femininity, despite his shame about it), I like to imagine Constance as a lady who is very proud and comfortable in her womanhood- despite her loud voice and direct and somehow brash manners. Even in her younger years, when she was classified as a tomboy by most, she loved girly things- dresses, make up, gossip magazines, etc. without issues. I think of Stan in her 60s wearing tacky jewelry, lipstick, and hair-curlers at night, tbh. That's why, in this AU, my mind skirts around the part were Ford gets stuck into the portal.

For example, I sometimes imagine 30s Ford simply having a change of heart and dismantling the portal, and (now former) Drifter!Constance living with him from that point on (and, of course, I elaborated this one up until Stan and Mabel get into the picture, but for the sake of brevity I'll stop here). Or, I bend canon a little, making up that the people of Gravity Falls only heard of some researcher who was gonna build and live in a shack in the forest, but they never actually got to see them, let alone find out if it was a man or a woman. It's a version were the chaos Ford caused in town while posses by Bill either never happened or he did it without getting caught by police or getting seen. And, about the name on documents and stuff-- Constance was a marinated and resourceful conwoman at that point, she simply found a way to make things work. Hell, they have the same last name- maybe this time she registered Ford as deceased, passed herself as his wife, and inherited the Shack and the rest of Ford's possessions. I know many, reading this, would think it's heartless of Stan, but to me this trick is fucking hilarious. Especially, I'm grinning like a maniac imagining how mad and appalled Ford would look as he realizes the trick Constance pulled- not only because what a fucking ASSHOLE she's been, to use his "death" to appropriate his stuff- but also!! secretly!! because WHAT the FUCK- he often fantasized about Stan being his wife, but this is the most cruel and ironic monkey paw situation EVER!! To reconnect back to your speculations about sexist!Ford being humiliated and mad about Constance running a business independently: I like it! it's fun to read! But, I have to go deeper. I usually think of Ford's sexism toward Constance to be the outside layer, so to speak. I think deep down Ford always knew Stan had the potential to be strong, resourceful and independent, despite what their ma, pa, teachers and other people said. Ford grew next to her, he knows what this girl is capable of, how determined she is. And that's the point...What he really dreads, what he really hates, is the idea she doesn't need him, at all. That's what would make Ford actually upset about Stan running a business: knowing that, hadn't she brought him back, she would had been fine, without him. Sexism would be the mental shield Ford uses to protect himself from this painful acknowledgment: He's just mad because his fraud of a sister thinks she's being successful, but all she accomplished was using her physical appearance and womanly ways to seduce and manipulate. That's all, really. I roll my eyes at him, here, which is a good indicator I got him in character, if I can say so myself. The last scene you shared, with Stan realizing her nephew and niece aren't as oppressed by gender roles as she herself used to be- and bypassing them, even- is SO sweet 🥺 I have absolutely no doubt in my mind: one thing that does NOT change in either the canon universe and the genderbend one, is that Stan would love and adore Dipper and Mabel- and learn a lot from them ❤ PS: is the puppy icon your anon signature? it's so cute! 🐶 look at this fine boy. I saw anouther person call Ford aroace and I think I finally.landed on my this bothers me even though I'm aroace.

I think I like Ford best lableless. I could sit here and make a cannon based argument for him being a demi sexual demi romantic demi boy, or I could sit here and explain why he's a cis gay man, or a he/they lesbian, or agender and pan and none of these break the cannon. The only thing that would change the cannon (and only slightly) is if you say he's a trans boy and I only say that becuse God knows the stans dad was transphobic like come on.

I find the fact Ford can be read as nearly anything beautiful it's a testament to how he's really good accidental queer rep. He puts the werid in queer. I find saying he's canonically, definitely one thing, an unsatisfying answer. I think if Ford got tumbler ,he'd go through dozens of lable variants, and he'd try every pronoun he could find. I think that calling him "plansexual" is the best thing the cannon could do because it jesters to his lack of hetronomivity without naming it.

hey so i'm a younger cis butch lesbian and seeing you write stan as transfem couldn't possibly make me happier. it clicked for me almost instantly and i thought "oh good! another lady who's butch like me!" because as you said in an earlier ask it just makes sense for stan, no book full of evidence required

sometimes i don't think the young crowd of the queer community holds enough space for older queers, and at times we forget they exist. it's especially true for trans people who realize and/or come out late in life. so seeing anyone older crack their egg, even if it is just a character, gives me a lot of joy- and reminds me that none of us are alone because we exist in every generation. i love and look up to old queers and especially old trans women

gosh, good questions, anon! i honestly hadn't put a ton of thought into it before now outside of "fuck yes fem!stan would have been an MLM girlie" hahaha! i LOVE what a bunch of other folks have put out in terms of characterization and thoughts on canon events (@/donethedevilspedicure & @/cartoonsinthemorning & @/cantgetworsethanthistbh have fantaaaastic takes), and honestly i've just kinda nodded along with most of them and gone "hell yeah" haha.

but i absolutely think stan and ford would have a different dynamic just in general. in canon, with them both being men, you can argue that they were raised with similar expectations (even if not similar beliefs they would meet those expectations), similar socializations, etc. but that probably wouldn't have been the case with "one girl, one boy" -- especially in the 50's-60's. even well meaning, modern day parents fall into the trap of imposing different expectations on their daughters than their sons, and you cannot convince me that filbrick and caryn pines would have been trying to overcome gendered norms for their kids lol.

in canon we get a picture of a younger stan who was an underachiever in a lot of ways, especially academically, and who was taught to talk with his fists when the need arose. but before the science fair, we don't really see stan being particularly rebellious? i would definitely argue that the subtext is there that he was, but it doesn't really seem like an egregious streak with him at that age - he wasn't doing as well as ford in school, and he was likely to slack off on things that weren't a) boxing or b) fixing up the boat, but he is very, very convinced that they're just gonna get through the rest of school and leave this place behind, so whatever. i don't think fem!stan would be as comfortable. canon!stan has a lot of shit to reckon with in terms of being stanford pine's "stupid brother," but fem!stan would be stanford pine's stupid sister AND be expected to be making up for that in a lot different ways. how she talks, how she dresses, where she goes, how late she's out, who she's with -- i think canon!stan had a lot more leeway to get away with being lackadaisical than fem!stan would, and i think she would rail much harder against that. sneaking an extra set of clothes out of the house to change into, skipping classes and sneaking out/back in late, lying egregiously about where she's going and with who (hello, welcome to learning to lie, sneak, and manipulate early on) so then we have ford. and i think they would both still be exceptionally close, closer than most siblings. but ford now has a layer of being the only son, and i think he would get more shit from filbrick to be A Man. not that he doesn't in canon of course, but that's arguably the thing that stan would have "excelled" at, comparatively speaking, taking the brunt of the expectation of male physicality. so we have options here: we've got a ford who is getting his ass beat by bullies all the time and getting chewed out for being a wuss by filbrick for it. a ford who sticks with boxing and better learns to defend himself, but who probably develops earlier on a touch of the "answer with my fist" streak we see from him post-portal because of it. or a ford whose sister is stepping in to fight his fights for him, which would further ostracize him from his peers, and runs the risk of filbrick finding out and doubling down on him for it.

so ford is in a position here where he's expected to protect himself and his sister, whether she wants him to or not. but he's also close to stan, and would understand why she was frustrated, at least at a surface level. and that puts him in a place where he's trying to balance the expectations of being the only son, the overachiever, but also protecting stan from the world, their parents, and herself. cause ford has to be there, he has to at least try and keep stan from pulling too far, because it would be too easy for her to get wrapped up with a bad crowd and taken advantage of. stan wouldn't believe that, of course, but i think she'd be especially vulnerable at this stage to getting roped into some bad relationships or groups if they offered her an ounce of the validation she isn't getting at home or at school or from ford, if he wasn't careful.

it kind of makes me think that if we consider ford being a little more physical and aggressive, because he had to be, he was pushed to be, and stan being a little more rebellious, a little more accustomed to lashing out, because she's being boxed in so much harder -- they probably would have started fracturing a little earlier. not as bad as the science fair, of course, but i don't think the introduction of the West Coast Tech idea would be the first time they had real, noticeable friction. especially when we throw in the stancest side of things. ford, who feels like he has to do everything, that he can't afford to fuck up at all, and this is the one thing he DOES want to do, to take care of stan vs stan who feels like she can't do ANYTHING and has to fuck around to be seen as a person instead of a place setting, and she wants ford to be the one person who sees her as something other than THAT.

at this point, i think it would all either come to a head and they'd end up in a fight that turns into something much more physical, and that would be the initial establishment of their 'more than siblings' relationship. OR i think stan would realize she had a different sort of leverage/power available to her, and would start deliberating using her sex appeal and toeing that line to keep ford from pushing as hard as he wants to against her acting out.

all that to say, when we get to talking about the science fair itself and what happens, i am just. a really big fan of cart's take on fem!stan either choosing to run away or eventually being sent to backupsmore with ford!
