I'm going to be so real with you, his first response is not going to be to comfort you

He is going to kill whoever triggered you, or burn it if it's not a person

You can try to stop him, but he's not going to

Honestly he might lowkey be making it worse, doing it right there and then with you watching

Well, he'll probably tell you to close your eyes and plug your ears first

(But if you want to participate, he'll just say: "let me do this for you, babe.")

All you'll know is that one minute it's/they're there, and the next Jeff is taking you by the shoulders and leading you away quickly

Just ignore the char/blood on his hoodie

He'll ask if you want to talk about it while you're walking

If you decline he'll ask again when you're back home

While he doesn't really need a reason to kill for you, he still wants to know what that scumbag did (or just what happened)

If you're mad at him for what he did, he's not going to care

In his eyes, he did the right thing, and he's not going to apologize for it

Anything that hurts his love deserves to perish, if not for their sake then for his

He can't stand the thought of someone/something that makes you unhappy existing in this world

If you ever stress about it again, he will actually focus on you, holding you, consoling you by repeating "they're/it's gone, they/it won't hurt you anymore..."

I feel like you guys would've already talked about your trauma

She's prone to attacks too, so it was a mutual discussion about triggers/what helps/what doesn't

So she knows exactly what's going on when you're triggered

Her first concern is you, trying to quell the attack before it gets too bad

She'll do something you told her helps ASAP

It'll make her feel better if you let her stay with you, but she understands if you need space

What she'd really like is to hold your hand and get your mind off of it by talking about something else

She'd be fine if she was the only one talking

Just as long as you're showing signs of improvement

When the attack is over, she'll give you time to process it

But eventually she will want to bring it up again

Specifically, she wants to make plans to... uh... "eliminate" the thing that triggered you

And those plans will be vividly detailed

If you don't want to take part in that, she'll make them (and execute them) herself

She just thought you'd wanna take part; I mean, it's how she """solved""" her trauma

She won't follow through if you explicitly tell her not to, but otherwise she operates under the assumption that this is a plan, not a fantasy

When you have another attack, she won't talk about how it/they can't hurt you anymore; she'll just focus on doing the things you said helped

Jane the Killer

She's pretty good at observing people, so I think she'd be able to sense your attack early on

Even if she doesn't know about your PTSD

The first thing she does is remove you from the situation, wrapping an arm around you and rushing away

She sends the meanest scowl to anyone who looks at you funny while you go

Then she focuses on grounding you; she's not too good with feelings, but she's logical enough to try and figure something out to help you

She won't talk much; just an occasional "breathe with me" or "focus on me" while she holds your hands and maintains eye contact

It doesn't show but she's actually so nervous, she has no idea if she's really helping you

She'll be right there with you through the worst of it, and she'll be there if you want to talk after

She will want to know what caused it, if she hasn't figured it out already

I honestly don't think she'll want to "eliminate" it/them

But she will talk the nastiest, goriest, most illegal shit about it/them

She gets all giddy when you grin about it too; internally she's going yeah!! made them smile!! (happy dance)

She'll try not to bring it up intentionally, but whenever it does come up she makes sure to express her strong distaste

If you ever actually want to... take care of things, she'll help with the cleanup, but she'll want you to have the satisfaction of planning and doing it yourself

I mean, she dreams of having that satisfaction herself (looks at Jeff)

Regardless of whether or not you want to do something illegal, ultimately she respects that it's your trauma and you get to deal with it however you like

"Ticci" Toby

Murder. Arson.

Literally his knee-jerk reaction

He just looks between you and the suspected trigger, points a thumb in its direction and says: "Want me to kill that guy/light that thing up?"

If you say yes he'll do it straight away; he doesn't care who's watching

He'll ask if you want to help first though ofc

Then he'll run away giggling like a second grader, grabbing your hand on the way

When you slow down he sighs satisfactorily, saying how fun that was

If you're still distressed (or if you refused his earlier offer), he finally takes notice of your emotions

He'll ask you quite bluntly what's wrong

When you explain it to him, he just nods solemnly

He knows from experience that having a rough past sucks, so he understands completely

If you haven't already he suggests that you "take care of it"

But if you agreed to murder/arson earlier he just grins again and says "Well then it's good that we did that back there!"

If you ever have an attack again he'll either remind you that the thing/person is gone, or he'll nag you about "taking care of it"

He'll begrudgingly put an arm around you though when you don't immediately calm down

He might offer you something to fidget with, too; that always helps him when he's anxious

Just try not to be too alarmed when it's a box cutter or a butterfly knife or something weird that he puts in your hand

Tim/Masky

I feel like he'd be a little awkward when you start to panic

He'll panic a little too, asking what's wrong and if/how he can help

He'll do anything you say, but if you're unable to respond he just puts his arm around your shoulders and takes you into another room

He'll hug you against him, patting your back awkwardly while you process the attack

He doesn't know what else to do :(

He probably realizes what's happening after a few minutes, and he only gets more awkward when that happens

He sucks at dealing with his own trauma; he is literally the worst person for you to be with right now

At least that's what he thinks

When you start to calm down he asks if you want to talk about it, but then immediately curses himself for asking such a stupid question (he doesn't even want to talk about his trauma; why should anyone else? (just his thoughts))

If you do want to talk it turns into a very deep and candid discussion in which you both open up a bit

He'll ask if there's anything that helps at all

Honestly he's asking for you as much as himself; he'd love to try anything that works for you

I don't think he'd suggest or condone killing/destroying the trigger; from his experience that just brings more issues

He'll basically just tell you "yeah, it sucks, and we just have to deal. Which sucks times two."

Idk if you ever thought about this but how would Husk react if his S/O was super self-conscious about their body? Whether thinking they’re way too skinny or way too fat. I feel like you, as the Husk professional, would know how to answer this because I am the exact opposite of a Husk professional. Much better with Angel Dust tbh.

Oh, trust me, as a certified fatass I have thought about this constantly. How would Husk feel about body types that aren't traditionally attractive?

Thankfully for me, my immediate instinct is that he doesn't care so much - sure, he has some physical preferences, but personality wins over everything else. It's part of why he's not swayed by Angel's initial flirting, I feel. He acknowledges that Angel is physically attractive, but the tryhard flirting was way too much of a turnoff. Conversely, even if he's not immediately drawn to someone's physical appearance, getting to know someone on a deeply personal level will attract him far harder than initial appearance ever could.

Not to say he doesn't see anything attractive in those non-traditional body types, of course. I do headcanon him as liking some squish on a partner for my own personal enjoyment, after all. Especially in the ass department. Husk hates to see you go but he loves watching you leave.

As for self-consciousness... trust me, he knows self-consciousness. I can go with him either being too skinny or overweight; either body type is the result of his awful self-care, especially ever since he lost the bet with Alastor. He drinks too much alcohol, he doesn't eat enough, and what he does eat has no nutritional value whatsoever. Any physical stamina he still has is bolstered by his innate demon powers; his muscles have all atrophied by now. But at the same time, we already know how Husk feels about wallowing alone in self-pity.

"You're not the only one down here who hates their body. Look at what I've done with mine! I got a second body after I destroyed my living one, and now I've gone and fucked this one up too. Maybe your choices led to how you look now, or maybe you just got saddled with a shitty form down here... but either way, hating yourself for it isn't going to get you anywhere. Who even benefits from your self-pity, anyway? Predatory jackasses who wanna sell you shit with the promise that it'll change you?

...I hope you don't feel like you need to change your body just for me. I like ya just the way you are. Being in a polyamorous relationship, it means so much to me and my family to see a scene like this. My wife runs a blog dedicated to polyamory in manga (@polyamanga), and so often potential triads or quads or whatever else will dissolve right at the end because of any number of excuses, like one character realizing that they see the love interest as like their mom, or something, or a harem protagonist insisting that polyamory is morally wrong even though he's too spineless to actually make a choice. It's endlessly frustrating, and even a lot of series that are centered around polyamory still miss the mark in certain ways. Kanojo mo Kanojo, for example, has every single character decrying the act of two-timing consistently despite the fact that that's the lifestyle that they agreed to live! Even the main dude calls himself a scumbag constantly, like he's a monster for actually being honest with his girlfriend and continuing to do something she, again, agreed to!

I don't know what Tozuka plans to do with this relationship, whether it's going to get a lot of focus or if it's going to mostly be a background detail or what, but just getting to see a character actively decide to enter a polyamorous relationship and be met with love and acceptance for that decision is extremely refreshing and exciting. I do hope we get to see them actually acting like a triad and that it doesn't devolve into jealous bickering, but from what we've seen of this group, the bickering that does happen is likely going to be mostly playful. More than anything, though, I hope that we get some more detailed characterization for Leila, as one of the major complaints I've seen is that she's just been generically smiley and supportive, not unlike Ichico in Nico's flashback

But what's wrong with that? Two different characters acted in a similar way in a similar situation, asking for their partner to be happy in the event of their impending death? That's not lazy writing, that's theming! Undead Unluck is about finding happiness through sorrow! Would Fuuko's parents have wanted her to kill herself after she found out that she was responsible for their death? No, they would have wanted her to be happy! Did Isshin's dad want her to lose faith in herself after her armor failed to protect him from a UMA? No, he wanted her to know that she had saved the rest of the village!

While plenty of characters enforce despair on themselves, no one in Undead Unluck deliberately enforces despair on anyone else except for God and the UMA, who represent that very despair. "I have to atone for what I did/this is my cross to bear/I deserve this." Those are all self-imposed rules! And if there's one thing Undead Unluck has taught us, it's that rules are meant to be broken!!! If a rule doesn't benefit or protect those it restricts, then it's just a tool that someone else is using to control them!

And that's exactly what we're told here, too. Society tells us that we have to pick one partner, even if it means someone's happiness has to be lost, but why? What purpose does it serve to compromise on what would make us happy? Sure, if one partner would be unhappy with that outcome, then it may not be worth pursuing, but Latla's objection isn't that she'd be unhappy, it's that other people will judge them for their choice

"Why do you always worry about me?! Why won't you just leave me be?" Latla has already decided that she doesn't get her happy ending because she wants Leila to get hers. She thinks that their happiness is mutually exclusive, so she resigned herself to finding happiness in Leila's happiness. But that's a fallacy. They aren't mutually exclusive, they can have their cake and eat it too, and they'll be happier for it because neither of them needs to think that they've deprived the other of their happiness. Do you think Rip and Leila would be satisfied knowing that Latla was hurting? That she was crying behind a tree while they kissed? That she was slowly backing away and would eventually be gone from their lives if they didn't literally drag her back?

Latla chastised Rip in both this and the previous loop for going out on his own and leaving her behind, but in her own way, Latla was doing the exact same thing. Rip was literally distant, but Latla was emotionally distant, refusing to allow herself to indulge in the happiness that would otherwise be lost to her sister. If she and Rip hadn't held each other at arm's length in the previous loop, how differently would their lives have gone? How happy could they have been? Better question, was happiness even possible for them at the time without Leila? Were they being disrespectful of Leila's wishes, or was the hole too great for them to fill on their own?

Nico couldn't fill the Ichico-shaped hole in his heart with Mico, even though that's what Ichico wanted, for fear that doing so would erase what little was left of her in his heart. Perhaps it was hopeless from the beginning that Rip and Latla would be able to move on without Leila, much like Rip and Leila wouldn't be able to smile knowing that Latla was crying

Undead Unluck is about joy and freedom, and its cast finds joy in living freely. Fuuko fell into despair because she couldn't touch anyone, but found joy when she met someone she could touch freely. Juiz was trapped in a never-ending cycle of loss, but found joy when she met someone who she trusted could break the cycle. Rip and Latla fell apart when they lost Leila, but now can laugh and smile without reservation or guilt because they can be with her forevermore without anyone telling them they can't. And who are we to tell them they can't be happy after everything they've been through?

between Courtney and Sunny, LO really just told to every survivor ever "if you ever said anything against me, then your abuse deserves to be erased and i'll defend your abuser, just to spite you", which isn't just gross... that's just straight up evil.

just to make a comparison, Courtney has no reason at all to give LO any grace or compassion. yet he fully believes and understand that LO's claims of have suffered CSA are valid, only after looking at her past behavior and consider it with the knowledge of a fully grown adult. even after everything LO has lie about him and try to pin down on his name, Courtney still hasn't even attempted to say that LO never suffered any abuse in the past. that's all LO. LO is the one who wants to claim that Courtney never went through anything, at anyone's hand, ever, at no point of his entire life. according to LO, Courtney ran away from home simply "chasing a guy", no because the house was abusive and suffocating for him in part because of her presence there. Courtney had a CSA trauma response by replicating it on another kid, no because he suffered CSA at anyone's hand, but because he is just that evil. nothing that Courtney ever does or did is ever a response to trauma because he never suffered any. that's the narrative that LO wants her audience to believe in. even the abuse that had nothing to do with LO and it was cameron's fault, that doesn't get to be called out either. Sunny right now doesn't deserved to be believe in. his abuser doesn't deserved to be called out for, not even warned about. in fact, the abuser will get treated as a mere victim who is injustly mistreated by the evil community who evilly harassed the not evil "native" trans woman (who never talked with anyone from the Nation outside of one funeral and never again). all because they stopped being the yes man of LO. i'm not being hyperbolic at all when i say that this is inhumane. i know that LO doesn't have any moral, principles and she'll always, always, prefer to look for herself alone before anything else. but it can't be forgotten that LO is just a terrible person, a dangerous person, who not only perpetrates harm herself against vulnerable people, but will enable other predators to do the same. the only people i feel sorry to are the vulnerable people on her audience that still don't know there's a target on their back.

Wyll doesn't just deserve more content, he deserves better content, in my humble opinion.

I know a lot of people were concerned about the change of category (is that the proper phrase?) about the Ansur part of his quest but I feel like that part needs changing to a degree. Primarily because it doesn't feel very Wyll specific.

I feel like it focuses more on how the Emperor is a scumbag then anything to do with Wyll.

I'm not a writer by any stretch of the imagination but I feel like you could've still had that confrontation with Ansur and the Emperor and had something that tied to Wyll like after you fight him, maybe Ansur sees some of himself in Wyll - a loyal protector - a strong guardian - a man of morals and maybe Ansur decides he doesn't want history to repeat itself. He doesn't want someone else to fall victim to the Emperor again so he gifts Wyll power or a weapon or something that could put him on par with Mizora so he doesn't need her help anymore.

He held out, he endured, he stayed true to himself and finally, someone recognizes that, truly acknowledges his efforts and now he has power that is truly his, that he earned in his own right by being who he is.

Maybe then you could tie that into a climax, a final confrontation with Mizora. Maybe instead of killing his father in the Iron Throne, she simply kidnaps him from there before before you arrive to make Wyll panic that we were too late and something has happened to his father.

Maybe Mizora appears at camp with his father as a bargaining chip, mocks him for going on a wild goose chase and how amusing it was to watch. She could threaten his father to make Wyll more compliant, to try force him to resign the pact but this time is different.

This time Wyll, the Blade of Frontiers, isn't the one who's at a disadvantage. Maybe you could have a Durge vs Orin situation - a 1v1, duel to the death with strict rules of engagement to be fraught at the foot of the hill where this all began - if Mizora wins, Wyll resigns and can never break free from the hells. If Wyll wins, Mizora dies and his father goes free.

Maybe Mizora uses a loop hole in the duel's rules to cheat when she's near defeat and that's when you and the rest of your party jump in to keep Mizora's lackeys at bay while Wyll finishes her off and then a cutscene of the final blow, of Wyll's victory. Finally, he's a free man and his father sees him for who he is. His actions said everything they needed to.

I don't know, like I said, not a writer in any capacity and I feel like I'm just getting lost in my own musing - there's lots of things I didn't consider, like surely a situation like this would have point holes everywhere, especially since I don't know the first thing about DnD and it's lore but my original point was that I feel like Wyll needs a moment - that character defining moment that most of the other characters have - that time for him because he is a good character, I really like him and I hope that Larian listens.

I appreciate all the hard work they do with all the patches, never doubt that but I've always felt like Wyll's story needs more attention and it is important - he's a main character, an origin, he's a key feature of the game and that should take priority.

I love all the new features that they add (to a degree) but this is a core issue and I'd much prefer they work on the things that matter and add the fluff later.

Just my two cents though, thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

Edit: I just remembered that devils go back to the hells when they die top side, right? (See, what did I say? Fandom is so mean smh - is it just me, or did fandom collectively decide to dunk him in the trash when Flynn did? Saying he "deserved it" and everything? Yes, he was a scumbag, but did even he deserve a gruesome death following a mental breakdown and for his life to be summed up as "big oof"? It just feels... meanspirited.

Canon isn't real if I don't look at it - Starline didn't die after breaking up with Eggman. He just went cray-cray for a while after Eggman betrayed him and he wound up crawling back to his ex, Bordeaux :)

My least favorite part about Lore Olympus is how they handled be loved characters in the myths like Demeter and Apollo. Both were powerful and highly respected Gods who weren't always the best, but had good intentions.

But Demeter is meant to be this controlling and emotional abusive mother when the most she did in the myths was not trust men? Like it's bit her fault she was just Zeus' side chick and she didn't want her daughter to have the same fate, but with that dude's brother.

Apollo was anything but a rapist. Sure he was not the best with love, but he mostly rolled unlucky with either people who didn't love him or people who died young. And Rachel makes him out to be some villain bad guy who doesn't understand boundaries instead of some god who represents ignorance. Greek mythology was MADE to explain why things happen the way they do and to explain human error, like Zeus having the human error of not keeping his dick in his pants.

BUT ZEUS CAN BE MADE MORE SYMPATHETIC, YET TWO GODS WHO WERE ALREADY SYMPATHETIC CAN'T BE?

honestly I've mentioned it in other discussions, but RS seems to just like... have a huge issue with women wanting to be anything other than a trophy wife.

Minthe doesn't want to "settle down" with Hades even though that was never her intention in the relationship and Hades is the one pushing the boundaries of the relationship? She's a gold digger taking advantage of a King and doesn't deserve to be loved.

Demeter wants to become Queen without the need for a husband and fights for the votes needed to be elected even though not a single other ruler has had to campaign for their position? She's just "jealous" of her daughter for becoming Queen through marriage and "salty" at Zeus and Hades and Poseidon because they're all rulers and she isn't.

As for characters like Apollo, they're always framed as villainous or manipulative (or outright abusive) when it's with the intent of making Hades look better. They never did this with characters like Hermes or Hephaestus because they were never interested in Persephone, but Apollo and Ares are both depicted as idiotic scumbags for the sole purpose of making Hades look like the 'better option' for Persephone. When you remove Apollo and Ares from the narrative though, and purely observe Hades based on his actions, Hades... isn't good for anyone, either. It's just really easy to make Guy A look good when Guy B is a r*pist. It's the lowest possible bar.

Basically so many characters are demonized far from their original versions for the sole purpose of pushing Persephone and Hades together, because RS doesn't know how to write a real story with real character progression. She's too afraid to give Persephone and Hades legitimate, deeply-rooted flaws or traits that would have to be challenged by the narrative in any way, so instead they're these boring self-insert projections that need everyone else to be on their worst behavior to make them look better. It takes effort to write main ship characters with real depth, whereas it takes zero effort to just make every character outside of the main ship an asshole to make the main ship characters look more redeeming by comparison.

AITA for punishing my son? 

I (43M) have spent the last 30 years without a soul trapped in a horrific state between life and death in a crystal dimension suspended in time where I can display realistic simulations of the past as a sort of "immersive VR experience" if you will. My son S (43M) is a real scumbag, he used to be a surgeon but after stealing a man's kidney to save his daughter (who died anyway) he became a crime boss and hurt a bunch of people, such as murdering his cousin R (45NB) and forcing C(late 30s M) to work for him, as well as infecting him with a deadly brain disease. My son eventually found out where I am and came to me to reconnect after not seeing me for 30 years. This is where I might be TA. I initially acted welcoming and loving, but soon switched to punishing him for his myriad sins. I made him relive all the worst moments of his past, forcing him to face his actions firsthand. I promised him salvation if he stayed with me. In truth, I feel empty without a soul, and hurting him is the only way I'm able to feel anything. I've felt so isolated these 30 years and I crave some sort of companionship, so the idea was that I'd keep him with me by any means possible. Of course, he also deserves punishment for his transgressions. If the Lord doesn't send him to Hell, I'll do it myself, I decided. Some time after the first punishment, C's fiancee, B (30s NB) hunted my son down and tore off 3 of his arms and blinded 5 of his eyes, as well as eating his soul. My son was understandably traumatized by this, so I decided to exploit this by trapping him in a virtual forest filled with the sounds of B and eyes peering from the darkness to make him feel like he was being hunted for sport. At the end of it, I forced him to watch B eat his corpse. After this I took him back to the living room of his childhood home and let him hug me and come to me for comfort. However, due to some truly odd circumstances, I suddenly found myself with a soul again in that moment. In a single moment I felt 30 years of pain, as well as overwhelming guilt over what I'd put my son through. I sobbed into his shoulder, muttering apologies, before forcing him out of the crystal realm. I completely shut myself off from everyone else, begging for death, but eventually recovered. I lost my soul again, but after feeling pain and guilt for the first time in 30 years I was no longer so twisted, just empty and miserable. I wanted to repair relations with my son, but he was killed by C in a rather… Upsetting way, and I haven't been able to talk to him since. I wish I could grieve him, but without a soul I'm just empty. I wish more than anything that we could reconcile, that I could make up for what I did, but I know that we're both already damned. In truth I know that this is an ESH situation, but I suppose I'd like to hear the opinion of others.

I started listening to this to clown on it because I saw this title and I'm like "this sounds fucking hilarious" and I shit you not, the entire premise is the protagonist Bailey breaks off her long term toxic relationship while on a trip with her boyfriend and she goes to a bar and meets a total stranger who she, as a human, feels this magic mysterious instant connection with, they even grab dinner and like the same food, and it leads to having a night of hot raging sex (completely RAW btw) that literally basically makes her fall in love with him that night and then in the morning? She wakes up first and for some reason decides to look at his phone when it goes off, sees his lockscreen is him and a beautiful woman embracing, and sees he just got a text, "From Courtney: when are you coming home? Casey is asking to spend time with you"

She INSTANTLY makes the assumption that Courtney is his wife and that Casey must be their child and that her new love was just another lying backstabbing man like the one she just left, and she instantly leaves without asking or speaking to him or anything, even though by her own admission "I thought we had something special, it literally felt like our souls were bonding together" like she fell HARD in less than like 8 hours

Y'all... Courtney is his family member and Casey is her mate and they just wanted to hang out or whatever 💀💀💀 and he's Bailey's mate, but since she isn't a werewolf and doesn't know about the supernatural, his plan was to spend time together and have sex and let her feel the connection and bond they had before he told her the truth the very next mornint, thinking it might help her understand better 💀💀💀 and then she turns out to be pregnant and she's considering an abortion because there's an extremely high chance of it being her abusive ex boyfriend's (who btw almost immediately finds out she's pregnant and since "it must be his" hes insisting to help her raise it and yall i think shes literally going to let this abusive pos co-parent her bastard child).

I mean, I know I use the word "literally" a lot but she's LITERALLY living paycheck to paycheck helping pay bills and her sick grandma's diabetes medications, and, shit you not, her thought process is "I just thought of his (the one night stand's) beautiful sleeping face and instantly knew I couldn't risk getting rid of it. Guess I'll be having a baby" GIRL WHAT? Thats literally a quote btw, "guess I'll be having a baby" like girl you are already verbally expressing what a massively poor decision this is like her tone is like sues inconvenienced by the horrible choice she's actively making. Like she literally fell so hard for him over a single night that she literally doesn't even hesitate to keep his baby but she also has absolutely no intention of letting him know about it because she thinks he's a scumbag and doesn't deserve to be in the child's life 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ meanwhile he's like literally having his pack comb through the entire state to look for her because he's already madly in love with her and he's the Alpha of his pack and he needs to take a mate soon and he won't take anyone else but her 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ this is a train wreck, I gotta see what stupid shit this girl pulls next

Nothing new happened for the past few minutes, so I can stop concentrating on the voices. They aren't even my real voice, though even I think they are better than it. My real voice is not something that belongs in this universe. 

Why did the son of a bitch have to make me like this? He made me only able to feel anger, made me have these wonderful voices, but my true voice a thing I was repulsed by, made me see inside of others' minds', but only the fears, the traumas, the sadness, the anger, and never anything happy, or kind. I don't know what love is. I just simply don't understand it.

I'm pretending Obey Me season 4 never happened. Heres why:

The brothers are acting cold and distant and nobody is even questioning why or what happened to them. Most of the brothers have been reduced to caricatures of themselves (more on this later). If anything, they've reverted back to how they were in season one. I've seen this happen often in events due to the fact that the devs want to avoid spoiling new players on future character progress or anything, and that's okay. I understand that. I usually don't play events for that reason. But season four? An actual part of the main story? I wonder if they changed the writers or something, because-

Their character progression? gone.

Their character depth? gone.

Mcs desire to help them? gone.

Their relationships with each other? in flames.

At one point Satan is having a whole ass mental breakdown, questioning the point of his existence and mc is given two options- Either leave or turn it into a joke first and then leave. And then we proceed with a band-aid solution "plan" from Asmo (why is he even here?) to trick Satan into coming home instead of just? Talking to him? Being there to support him? Affirming his right to exist? Telling him that he's more than how he was born? Ok, fine. I'm sure that when we get time alone...-

Oh never mind, we just summon Lucifer and everything is solved. Okay.

Satan deserves to be able to live without that 2-dimensional, shallow praise from Lucifer. Satan deserves the right to try to recover. Did the brothers just forget season 3 or something? Satan ran away and nobody even looked for him for two weeks. Yeah, this probably might have made sense back in season one, maybe in season two if we're being generous, but now? After everything that's happened, and nobody even wonders where he was for two weeks? Not even MC? That's just too sad.

Now the problem isn't just Lesson 70, which is what I've been complaining about for the past couple of paragraphs. That's just one example. The issue is the whole season. This issue? How the brothers act, and how everyone else, especially mc, reacts to them.

Lucifer is acting extremely cold and distant in comparison to how he acted in s2 or s3. This in itself isn't an issue, but the problem is that nobody is questioning why. What happened that caused Lucifer to start acting like he did in season one? Why is nobody concerned or worried about it? Why does nobody, including mc, confront him about it? Not even Mammon who has a track record for noticing changes in behavior from his brothers, not even Diavolo (more on him later) who he spends so much time with, nobody wonders why Lucifer went back into his shell. We can theorize reasons why, but we never actually confront him about it to confirm, and the issue is never resolved.

Mammon is back to calling us his servant. This can easily be rationalized. We can say that he is feeling insecure due to the lack of time MC has been spending with him. We can say that he feels threatened due to the arrival of new exchange students. But we are never given the chance to talk to him about it. Not even to ask if he's okay. It doesn't help that literally EVERY SINGLE interaction he has with LITERALLY EVERYONE-- this includes the dateables-- goes something like this:

Mammon: *says literally anything*

Character: *calls him an idiot, alludes to him being an idiot, alludes to him being useless/a burden, or insults him in some other way (scumbag, etc).*

Mammon: Hey!

OR...

Character 1: *Mentions Mammon*

Character 2: *Insults Mammon*

Yes, I understand Mammon is not, by any means, a GOOD person. I understand that prior to MC's arrival to Devildom, this was much more common. (this is especially shown in older devilgrams.) It's true that Mammon is addicted to gambling, prone to stealing, and overall an extremely greedy person. And Mammon's behavior, as well as the way people treat him, is not exclusively featured in season 4. This has been shown in every season of the game so far. Nobody shows Mammon that they expect anything better from him, so he just continues and it's not resolved. And that's fine. It's part of his character and that greedy part of him will probably never go away. But this isn't a Mammon breakdown, it's a season 4 breakdown. So I digress. The issue with season 4 is that this is all he is.

We know Mammon is a caring person who loves his brothers. We know Mammon has trouble being upfront with his emotions. We know Mammon is a bit of an airhead, but can be surprisingly observant when it comes to empathetic matters. But none of this is shown in season 4. Mammon is shown exclusively as greedy for money, idiotic to a comical extent, and an object to be made fun of and played off for jokes. As I stated before, this is old news. But the issue in season 4 is that he is depicted as nothing more than that.

None of his brothers question his somewhat off behavior and neither does mc. And he is stuck in the shitty comic relief role the entire time. We get a couple moments with him, and they consist of him showcasing his insecurity and we can do nothing to help. Nobody says a single thing about him before insulting him, including Beel, who used to be on his side. Mc is given no option to defend or help him, and in several instances, is forced to make fun of him as well. When Beel is asked to list 100 nice things about him, he lists about two before giving up. Oh, but we can't end a conversation about Mammon without insulting him, so Luke fulfills this duty before moving on.

Leviathan. Don't even get me started on Levi. Before I start, I want to make it clear that I love Levi with all of my heart. He is one of my favorite brothers, and the way they treat him is pretty sad to me. Now we know about Levi from the previous seasons. He struggles with self-confidence and has the tendency to constantly compare himself to others, making him spiral into loops of self-hatred. Anime and games are forms of escapism to him. This has been established. This deep-rooted self-loathing is not something magically cured when you get a friend or someone to support you. It's a long journey and it takes a lot of work, and even then, the self-doubt may never completely disappear. In seasons 2 and 3, however, we see signs that Levi is finally heading toward some path of recovery. He is able to assert himself a tiny bit more, he accepts that when MC says they love him, they're not lying. Despite this, Levi still is extremely unsure of himself and needs constant reassurance. Now the problem with Levi, across all seasons, is how the writers handle this. His self-loathing is often played off for jokes, and his love for anime becomes the definition of his character. The problem is that this becomes ESPECIALLY prevalent in season four.

Almost every time he speaks, it's one of two things:

A rant about anime/light novel/game.

A comment on how low he views himself.

This in itself isn't terrible. It could be worse. The problem is that nobody cares. I don't mean that in an insulting kind of way, I mean that his brothers don't care about how much he hates himself, nobody corrects him when he says he's a waste of space, and mc is not given any option to reassure him. The single time mc is given the option to correct him, it is immediately brushed off and we never go back to it.

And, similar to Mammon, Levi is reduced to only these traits. In contrast to Mammon, however, throughout the story, Mammon has been relatively consistent in character writing up until season four. Meanwhile, the devs obviously care less about Levi in comparison to Lucifer or Mammon. Levi has pretty much always been sidelined and reduced to a plot device. Whenever a problem arises, it's either A) Diavolo was bored or B) Levi's made a mistake involving a game and now we're all trapped in it until all of the brothers make out with MC or something.

Levi isn't used as a plot device in season 4, but whenever the plot calls for it, they just whip out the "limited edition Ruri-chan figure" to make Levi do whatever. Satan is having a mental breakdown because of feelings of inferiority. He questions why he even exists. Levi is right there watching. Levi has experienced feelings similar to those. Levi is constantly doubting his self-worth. Levi feels like he's a waste of space and he also wonders what the point of existence is. They both have severe feelings of inferiority. What does Levi do in this situation? Does he attempt to comfort Satan, to empathize with him, to make a connection or relate to his issue, to tell him that he's not alone, that he's a capable demon that Levi often feels jealous of due to Satan's intellect? Nope. He hears about the limited edition Ruri-chan figure and he just. He just leaves. ???? HUH??? What???????? Yep. Brother of the year, fellas. This is what I mean when I say that Levi's character in season 4 is defined by liking anime.

Asmodeus is acting the most normal out of the brothers, but that's only because his character never really had many chances to shine to begin with. Once again, let me make it clear that I love Asmo. I love all of the demon brothers. But honestly, Asmo, right alongside Levi, has been sidelined since the very beginning, so this isn't an issue exclusive to season 4. For most of season 4 he's actually the most normal acting demon brother, so I don't have too many complaints. I actually liked the way he was handled some of the time. We got a little insight into his insecurities when the shadow took over him, and his interaction with Levi then was pretty nice. As always though, I think the game focuses a bit too much on the narcissistic aspect of his character. He's the avatar of lust, not the avatar of finding yourself sexy. I'm not saying to make him stop being a narcissist since that's such a huge part of his character, I just wish that the game presented him as MORE than just a narcissist. He's more than someone who has an obsession with mirrors.

Also, what was the point of him and Levi being around for lesson 70? They literally did nothing. There was so much potential for the two of them being there, but that was all thrown out the window.

I've been writing for way longer than I thought I would, so I'm going to wrap up the character specific complaints here. To summarize, most of the characters, mainly the brothers, are reduced to 1-2 character traits that define them for the entirety of season 4, and nobody cares about the demons regressing. Mammon likes money and is stupid. That's it. Levi likes anime and doesn't like himself. That's it. Beel likes food. That's it. Belphie is tired. That's it. Satan has a raging inferiority complex and nobody cares. Lucifer is sealing himself off again and nobody cares. Levi hates himself and nobody cares. Mammon also apparently hates himself, and the brothers agree with him when this revelation is made. Also, they don't care.

Another general complaint I have is the plot itself. Obey Me has never been known for it's plot, obviously (ie. Lesson 16) but at least previous seasons had coherent character arcs and plots. This season felt like the devs were part of that one meme template with Moon Knight

Like we literally spent an entire lesson helping Raphael climb a wall. I doubt that was necessary. In short, the pacing is really bad. Issues with pacing and such never really bothered me, but to this extent? It's really noticeable.

Just remembered another thing. We promised Mammon that we would summon him first, and we ended up summoning Lucifer first? This is just a personal complaint but I was pretty disappointed. And the fact that we were able to summon him and, in true season 4 fashion, nobody really cared that much. Even though that's a pretty monumental event considering the fact that they've been building this up for almost two seasons.

If anyone actually read all this, everything here is just how I personally viewed it. If someone could convince me that I'm wrong, that this actually had a meaning, and that things get better, I would be overjoyed. I couldn't quite bring myself to get to lesson 80 because I was so turned off by everything else, so maybe I could be wrong- maybe things get resolved. Even so, severely doubt that they could fix everything just like that.

She comes to him for conversation, for comfort, for consultation. But Peter wished she came to him for something else.

He remembers the first time he saw you. How he’d thought his heart had stopped for a second, forgetting how to do its most basic function. How could someone look so effortlessly beautiful? How could a voice sound so sweet while asking such a mundane question?

What a blistering and bizarre concept.

I feel like (and I'm speaking of my personal opinions from my time as an editrix, your mileage may vary) a lot of authors today either make the mistake of brewing too long or gunning too fast without regard to the nature of their text. In this case the pace is rapid. It has to be, we start with three disparate elements, not linking them together quickly is only going to beget boredom. From this first month we instantly know where Katrina Nguyen, Shizuka Satomi, and Lan Tran stand in life, and then how they will relate to one another going forward. Their first tenuous threads of acquaintance.

Gosh, where do I even begin? This book is... so very like a song I heard once, in my head. Overly poetic considering this is a story about music, but I think it's the most apt. It has this strong core that concerns itself only with being its best self rather than try to fit into the hottest-selling niches or formulaic fantasy structures currently in vogue. And I really do love it for that already.

I'm uh, probably gushing too much. Let's get down more into the characters, how I feel about them so far.

Katrina is the very definition of a cinnamon roll, the poor girl. Her story is unfortunately common among queer youth. To be essentially disowned by family, to find out in the worst ways your support network is not as firm as you thought. Evan, in these chapters, is every bit the portrait of... this absolute scumbag. He takes and has nothing to say unless it's with a parrot's tongue. Or a racist one. The type born from a lazy sort of ignorance. I have known more than one Evan in my lifetime, and I see the reflections of them here, in more vibrant color.

The real kicker is how entitled he feels to everything. Katrina's money, her violin, even her body. I find it telling, in a way, that the last straw for Katrina isn't the violation of her body, but of her beloved violin. As though it deserves better treatment then she herself does. The wounds within Katrina's psyche are far and away more torturous than bruised face and broken rib, even though they all come from the same essential source.

Shizuka has her work cut out for her.

Y'know there's really something to Shizuka's dawdling on her contract that I understand. She was given majestic violin skills, but must send seven souls to Hell. The real, actual Hell. The first six were all easy enough but now she wants something better. I just... get it. It reeks of the artist who's gotten paid well in the past but this time wants to express. Is it weird to see sending souls to Hell as a form of art? No, I don't think so. Writers do that to their favorite blorbos every day. This larger-than-life Queen of Hell is just actually doing it. I imagine another part is because she wants to know if anyone else can hear what she hears. The other side, away from the frustrated author view, is one where I can see a Shizuka Satomi who doesn't care about living on Earth if no one will ever understand what she has to say. Hence, Katrina. Katrina has to be it.

I do adore these scenes of going to the violin shops. Spending so much on a "cheap" violin because it's not right to just discard the thing Katrina values most in life. It has to be repaired, it's where some of her esteem, a piece of her soul lies. And the complete geeking out about bits and bobs of violins is just incredible. I love to hear people gush on and have the most heated opinions over the tiniest details on things. The passion of it is very forward and very, very fun for me. Not to mention "You're a bit of a diva, aren't you?" Has now entered my daily lexicon whenever any of my friends voices their preferences about anything. Thank you, Miss Aoki.

Then that leaves us with Lan Tran, the current proprietor of Starrgate Donut. We have dealt with a tragically down-to-Earth story about a runaway, trangender girl. A woman with her hands in Hell, and now an otherworldly story about an alien mom of 4. Also gaaaaaaaaaaay. At least insofar as our limited human bodies assign such epithets to otherworlders. It is very cute how Lan's kids notice right away that their mother is very much interested in Shizuka. I do like that we didn't tippy-toe around the realization between the two that Lan is an alien. I feel refreshed by it, there are far more interesting conversations that they can be having than playing the sitcom game.

It's not lost on my either that Lan's story is very much one of a refugee. Her and the found family around her. I think I'll take a moment to say that the fact that she has her donuts digitally replicated somewhat puts her at odds with a musician like Shizuka from the start. For her this donut shop is a means of survival, first and formost. Her perfect donuts aren't a strive towards her own expression but the standard she must always uphold to stay afloat. I wonder if this will unfold later as an ongoing theme. For now we're left with a PTSD she won't yet face up to, but cannot run away from. I'm looking forward to more of her starry story, and what she could have been running from. Something terrible enough to make even the most unlikely group stick together.

For now, though, we end with Katrina picking a violin to practice with. The innocent sort of picking where she knows no brands or makers, all she has to go on is a sound she's looking for. And the one she feels safest with is...

Shizuka's first violin. Something to be said here for sure about how both these artists have the same start.

Okay I have this kind of angsty thought

Do you guys ever wonder why Mammon never loses control?

Like in the game he's never turned demon form on us out of anger?

He's never threatened us?

Or really tried to lay a hand on us.

Do you think it's because... He's really really powerful

Like when they fell his demonic power could overthrow Lucifer's and almost, but not quite measure up to Diaovlo's

And when they first fell after hearing that his sister Lilith died he lost control and killed the remaining soldiers that were in the rebellion on accident because he was blinded by rage and sadness.

And Lucifer told him to get his power under control before he ended up hurting his brothers

Do you think that's why Mammon acts like an idiot half the time?

He wants to seem like he's harmless and won't hurt anything or anyone.

He lets them insult/hurt/punish him because he feels like he deserves it.

Also he doesn't use this power and took the title of the second most powerful Demon Lord to spare Lucifer's pride.

They always call him scumbag and idiot worthless but he doesn't care but there's only one name that they will never call him

A Monster

He doesn't care what his brother's call him as long as they don't call him a monster and don't see him as one

Mammon's worst fear is having hurt his brothers and then his brothers look at him with fear and call him nothing but a monster.

See, I pretty much agree with this too, I do think Mammon can genuinely be a bit spacey, but I think that’s mostly just because he doesn’t always want to think. And you know how some people just don’t keep brain space for stuff they feel is useless? Mammon’s brain is probably packed with numbers, statistics, gambling and game strategies, information to pull off heists, etc. stuff that will help him make money. Anything else just isn’t worth remembering.

But concerning Mammon and his power, it’s very clear that Lucifer reserves his respect for people who are extremely powerful, people like Barbatos and Diavolo. Also it’s been mentioned before that Lucifer used to keep Asmo by his side often, and we know just how seriously strong Asmo’s charm is.

And I’d like to assume that Lucifer gathered all the angels with the most potential in the Celestial Realm, angels people usually shrugged off at face value, but he kept and trained and kept them as family. He helped unlock their potential.

So if Mammon is his favorite out of all the brothers, it stands to reason that Mammon must hold some serious power.
