Poll 4, Round 3.
About Maria: (by @6larosie9) Maria was a lab baby made by Eggman as a way to collect and protect the chaos emeralds. He used Sonic and Shadow's DNA so she would be extremely strong and fast, and a very difficult challenge to anyone who tries to get in her way. Maria, Sonic, and Shadow are unaware they're related for the time being. She's a very determined hedgehog, competitive and cocky, and quite loyal to anyone she deems friends or family. Also, she secretly adores the outdoors and nature, but she'd never tell Eggman that.
About Nova: (by @pastelspindash) Nova was created by Eggman from Sonic and Shadow's DNA in an attempt to perfect the ultimate lifeform. She was created at the age she is now, 19, and was rescued from Eggman's lab by the pair. However, they weren't very good parents, often neglecting their duties as parents for their duties as heroes. (they say it's to protect her, but really they're just not ready for that responsibility.) Because of this, Nova is a lot closer to Amy, who looked after her until Eggman returned one day. He convinced her to rejoin the Empire, and now she works with him, as well as seeing him as her father figure. She fights Sonic whatever chance she gets, and seems to revel in the fight just like him - maybe they'll even start to bond over their regular battles... Despite working for Eggman, under her hard exterior and resting angry face is a very kind and rather lonely girl. Her hobbies include skateboarding and parkour.

I love the bits of characterisation I've seen of Shadow in Sonic Prime. He's serious, goal-oriented, cold in the way he speaks of the alternate versions of Sonic's friends ('they're not real')... but also a show-off and smug/cocky (the bit where he spindashes and throws a leg out to put the tech bracelet/whatever it's called, or the way he spins to show off he got all 4 of them from Sonic, or how he uses Sonic as a skateboard for a moment).
I also love how we're shown that he and Sonic are pretty much equally-matched: each hit gets reciprocated, each time one steals the tech, the other gets it back, etc.
His VA does an amazing job too! It's the perfect balance between soft-spoken and firm. Reminds me much of Humphrey's performance in SA2 (and even his JP VA, Koji Yusa)

Your OCs have just been flung into whatever movie/show you've watched most recently! What happens, and how do they cope? How do they interact with the canon characters?
I just recently watched "The Neverending Story" for the zillionth time so this'll be interesting
Siv: Picks a fight with every single one of the characters, and ends up getting nuked by the sphynx gate because of her intense self-loathing
Jay: Gives the Empress a new name, the most beautiful name he knows (It's Cassandra)
Cassandra: Manages to banish the Nothing from Fantasia- she sends it straight into the shadow realm, where there's nothing for it to consume except shadows
Hailey: Antagonizes Gmork because she's dead, what is he gonna do? Kill her?
Arya: Is honestly just really happy because they actually get to interact with other fae-adjacent beings after being shut off from the Otherword for almost two thousand years
Esme: Nukes the Nothing with her light-based powers, then goes to find the nearest fantasy tavern because she is WAY too sober for this shit.
Gina: Figures everything out really fast, and since she's human and technically a minor, she counts as an Earthling Child, right? So she gives the Empress a new name and gets it over with.
Ember: Sees that they're having some kid fight The Nothing and ends up throwing hands with everyone because kids deserve better than that.
Cat: Ends up dying because she doesn't know how to live without modern technology and she ends up falling into a hole/getting eaten by wild beasts/falling off a horse/etc etc etc
Max: Decides to go pick a fight with the Empress because she's a... you know, Empress, and he isn't a big fan of monarchy.
Kyle: Probably passes out pretty quickly due to the lack of electricity in Fantasia
Eric: Transports anyone who wants to go home back to their universe, then faces up against the Nothing on his own.
Jacob: Joins his husband in facing off against the Nothing.
Khalil: "No.", then melts into the shadows and transports himself home.
Antonio: Introduces the world of Fantasia to skateboarding
Ameerah: Manipulates the Gmork into being more docile, then rides around Fantasia on a giant wolf for the singular reason that it is awesome.
Rania: Immediately starts studying all the strange fantasy creatures
Reggie: Helps Antonio introduce skateboarding to Fantasia.
Director Hawke: Tries to take over Fantasia with her dark magic and exterminate basically all the other sentient species, until someone stops her.
Meredith: Goes and bothers Morla the Ancient One to get more information on where the hell she is.
Cory: Immediately starts fangirling over the fact that he's in a real fantasy world, probably ends up scaring the crap out of Falkor because no one expects some random teen to be flying alongside them.
Kelsie: Just enjoys being in nature with all the plants and everything, since her powers are stronger when she's around them.
Onnie: Retreats to the Negative Speed Force until they can figure out how to get home.
Pippa: "OMG!!! A FAIRY!!!"
Jessi: Uses her sonic powers to blast open a hole in reality (that probably shatters everyone's eardrums) to go home because all this nature is really going to ruin her Prada heels.
Hyun-Ki: Fucks off with the Nighthob and his stupid bat and leaves Jessi to suck his dust
Marie: Is trying REALLY hard to hide any evidence that she is from space, as not to break the Prime Directive.
Qiara: Uses her powers to restore Fantasia to what it used to be, then runs off with her girlfriends to go live a cottage-core dream fantasy life.
Liah: Breaks the Prime Directive about 600 times because she keeps meeting all kinds of new friends and she tells them everything.
Soraya: Beams back up onto her ship and just spends the rest of her time there hanging out on the Tschaikovsky, which is floating above Fantasia, pretending that she is not, in fact, in a fantasy world.
Thalia: Goes and talks shit with Morla the Ancient One because she is way too tired for this crap.
Reyna: Spends the entirety of her time in Fantasia starry-eyed over all the fantastical creatures and magic and stuff
Athena: Takes over Fantasia and manages to stop The Nothing with a technicality- the Empress needs a new name, so why not replace her with an Empress with a different name? She gets overthrown in a week.
Laila: Joins Athena in ruling over Fantasia for like, a week, before they get overthrown
Samira: Her little scientist nerd ass is going crazy over all these new creatures and species all around her
Aldrich: Follows Sohelia around to make sure she doesn't get herself into danger (she does)
Sohelia: Figures out what's going on really fast, gives the Empress a new name and stops the whole crisis before it actually happens
Dolores: Tries to stay in Fantasia because it's so pretty there, is really disappointed when she has to go back to the real world
Vanessa: Finally feels like she fits in and isn't a freak anymore while surrounded by all these not-quite-human characters.
Matt: Tries and fails to learn how to ride a horse, ends up getting a luckdragon instead.
Victorie: Stays in the shadows until she understands what's going on, then she follows Atreyu around making sure that nothing eats this poor kid.
Kayla: Immediately gets to work trying to build some kind of portal home because HYDRA isn't going to take itself down.
Dori: Starts testing out their shapeshifting powers with all the strange creatures around them, just to see how far they can push themself.
Ellis: Nukes the Nothing with angelic light and the power of love and peace and justice and all those other things that angels stand for

Ooh I know this is a big ask, but I wonder if you could make a post in the style of my Batraculous post with the other Science kids beside Marc, Kagami and Luka as Bat-Heroes? Also the Recess and Theatre kids. Make sure that when you put them into Chat GPT to mention their personalities. If you could do their bat-hero names (Like the (Insert name here) Bat), what their batsuits and capes look like, gadgets they use, and how they fight crime around the city of Paris? You can use my Batraculous post for a reference. All the 4 classes work together and visit each other's batcaves via underground tunnels. Each class has a Batcave located in the 4 corners of Paris. Thank you!
Batraculous South ⬇️
Aurore Beaureal (Weather Bat): Aurore is at times more daytime-based than her teammates, but still sticks to the minimal shadows. Using her weaponized umbrella, she can take down any enemy. Her Weather Bat suit allows her to float or hover as if she’s lighter than air, and she can send powerful blasts of wind from air cannons in her gloves
Mireille Caquet (Moon Bat): Mireille focuses on stealth missions, sticking very close to the shadows before she strikes. Her Moon Bat Suit is equipped with sound-absorbing fabric to allow her to slip by anyone undetected
Zoé Lee (Punk Bat): Despite the name, Zoé is excellent at diffusing tense situations, and is an excellent negotiator for hostage situations. Her Punk Bat suit comes equipped with a studded leather jacket
Jean Duparc (Song Bat): Jean is a defensive hero, often taking on villains head on with the voice amplifier in his batsuit, which allows him to emit a sonic scream at any frequency he chooses. His batsuit, of course, is glamorous and able to distract any villains
Cosette Bellamy (Incognito Bat): Cosette takes on the underground scene in her camouflage batsuit. It comes equipped with a hologram-like mask which they can use to gain the trust of criminals before launching a sneak attack with their arsenal
Denise Cabello (Buff Bat): Denise is the physically strongest member of the team and handles all of the heavy lifting during missions. Their suit comes equipped with shock-absorption and bullet-proof fabric, making them one formidable opponent
Simon O’Connor (Techno Bat): Simon is a hacking genius, often hacking into the city’s security footage to keep a look out for any suspicious activity. His suit comes equipped with a holographic tablet he can use to access any piece of tech, get past security systems, and more. Much more
Ismael Prisk (Magic Bat): Ismael as Magic Bat is a force to be reckoned with and he uses his talents in illusions to cause confusion to any criminal. His suit comes equipped with his skateboard strapped to his back, allowing him to get to places quicker
Reshma Leghari (Gem Bat): Reshma, despite her calm demeanor, is not someone you want to mess with. She often handles robbers. Her bat suit comes equipped with pellets that, when thrown, grow into massive crystal stalagmites within a matter of seconds
Lacey Greene (Parkour Bat): Lacey is the most physically active on the team. She’s incredibly fast even without her suit, but it still gives her a boost, and makes her fast enough to catch up with a speeding sports car. The suit also enhances her agility and the boots allow her to walk on walls
Ondine Philippe (Swimmer Bat): Ondine handles all water-based missions, often stopping people from dumping oil and killing whales for ambergris. Her suit comes with a long-lasting supply of oxygen and can handle the pressures of the ocean floor, so she can stay down there as long as she wants without problems
Batsuits
Aurore's Batsuit: A sleek suit with a black and sky blue color scheme with a shining sun emblem on her chest. Her utility belt is filled with a collapsable umbrella and extra ammo, and her cape is made of vinyl fabric with a hood, perfect for rainy days
Mireille's Batsuit: A midnight blue suit with a crescent moon emblem on the chest. Mireille's mask has a night vision setting, and her utility belt comes with smoke bombs and a stun gun. Her cape can also function as an invisibility cloak, and it's bulletproof
Zoé's Batsuit: Imagine the Batman version of Spider-Punk. Zoe's suit is black with some hints of yellow. Her sleek suit is reminiscent of a motorcycle suit with graffiti on the pant legs. Her long leather has silver studs on the shoulders and a pink bat emblem on the back, and her utility belt comes equipped with a grappling hook, brass knuckles, and a tracking device in case her motorcycle gets hijacked
Jean's Batsuit: Jean's suit is dramatic, almost reminiscent of the Phantom of the Opera, fancy hat and all. His suit is a deep purple with hints of white and has a skull with bat wings emblem on his chest. His belt is equipped with a quill that can shoot small but powerful tranquilizers and a device that's able to throw his voice and confuse villains, or it can amplify his voice and leave ears ringing
Cosette's Batsuit: Cosette's suit is dark magenta with a black bat emblem on the chest, and their utility belt comes with a tranquilizer gun, grappling hook, and a cyber mask, that when put on and activated, drastically changes their appearance. Her mask covers her mouth and comes equipped with a voice changer. Like Mireille's, their cape functions as an invisibility cloak
Denise's Batsuit: Denise's suit is reinforced with Kevlar, showcasing their strength and durability. Their suit is a deep pink with a black bat emblem on their chest, comes equipped with weighted gloves that can really knock someone out, and their utility belt contains lightweight, hand-sized spheres. But, when thrown by and activated by Denise, they instantly weigh over fifty pounds. Their cape is weighted and can only be worn by either them, Ivan, or Kim
Simon's Batsuit: A high-tech suit colored a forest green with hints of black, and a circuit-board bat emblem on their chest. Their utility belt comes with several tracking chips, all linked to their arm wristlet which can display holograms of maps, records, etc. His cape acts as a literal firewall, preventing anyone from hacking into his high-tech equipment
Ismael's Batsuit: Its design makes his suit look almost like Tuxedo Mask with a fancy black bat emblem on the chest. His utility belt contains smoke bombs, sleeping powder, and dagger-like playing cards. His cape acts as an invisibility cloak, which is perfect for dramatic exits
Reshma's Batsuit: A sleek, lightweight, bright magenta suit that works with her agility, and has a diamond bat emblem. Her suit comes equipped with diamond earrings that act as earpieces, and diamond cuff bracelets to block any shots, and they're sharp enough to cut through almost anything. Her belt comes with her crystal pellets, lipstick taser, and chloroform in a small perfume bottle
Lacey's Batsuit: A sleek, reinforced, and lightweight suit to make running and parkour much easier. Lacey's suit is mint green with a white bat emblem on the chest. Her cape has built-in wings in case she doesn't make a jump (Which is very rare) Her boots allow her to walk and run on any surface, and come with grips so that she can scale walls
Ondine's Batsuit is similar to a wet suit, sleek and purple in color with a green bat emblem on her chest. Her mask is hooked up to a small but long-lasting oxygen tank built into her suit, and the vision settings adjust the further she goes underwater. Her belt is equipped with a GPS so she can see what part of the ocean she's in, and harmless tranquilizers just in case she comes across a predatory fish
Base Rooms
The secret basement of the Leghari estate is used as their home base
-The Main Control Room: The main center of the Batcave, equipped with all sorts of holographic displays that track criminal activity, show maps of the city, and there's a massive touchscreen display that sort of controls the whole room. This is where Aurore organizes each mission, and it's constantly upgrading thanks to Simon
-Garage: A garage filled with all sorts of customized vehicles, catered to each team member's preferences
-Armory: Denise and Zoé keep the room stocked with all sorts of different weapons from non-lethal to very-lethal.
-The Lab: A highly advance lab where Simon and Aurore work on creating and modifying gadgets. There are several super computers, chemistry sets, 3D printers, smartboards, indestrctible practice dummies, and more
-Training Room: A massive gym with work-out equipment, climbing walls, training simulations, a range to practice their aim with grappling hooks and tranquilizer guns, and a martial arts dojo
-Archives: A storage room where they keep records on the city, criminals, cold cases, etc. It's primarily digital and often frequented by Simon, Marc, and Cosette
-The Infirmary: Often frequented by Ismael and Lacey. Jean, Marc, and Mireille oversee the medical bay equipped with all sorts of advanced medical technology and supplies. Simon is in the works of creating a healing pod to heal any internal damage in a matter of three minutes
-The Lounge: A comfortable space for the team to relax, watch movies, and grab something from the kitchen. It's also where the couples like to make out, especially Denise and Simon
Vehicles
-The Bat Chopper: A helicopter used by Aurore and Mireille to keep tabs on high-speed chases. There's an auto-pilot setting for when they need to hurry down to the action, and on their command, a rope ladder will drop down
-The Batcycle: A sleek motorcycle used by Zoé that can move swiftly through any crowd. The batcycle also doubles as a hoverbike, allowing her to patrol from the rooftops as well
-The Bat Board: Ismael's customized skateboard, used by him for patrols and surveillance. There are motion sensors on the wheels that can detect if he's being followed by lighting up
-The Bat Truck: A reinforced, off-road vehicle used for even the harshest terrains. Denise operates the Bat Truck and its arsenal of built-in weapons
-The Batmobile: A sleek, armored sports car, frequently driven by Reshma and Jean. The Batmobile comes equipped with a state-of-the-art navigation system, auto-pilot, and it can be driven through a setting on one of Reshma and Jean's tech bracelets. The batmobile is also equipped with a grappling hook to easily tail criminals
-The Bat Board 2: Cosette and Lacey's custom hoverboards, which allows them to move swiftly and easily through the crowded streets or on rooftops to chase down criminals
-The Bat Scooter: Simon's electric scooter, equipped with a tracker, motion sensors, and can easily collapse into a staff for him to use as a weapon
Night in Paris
Weather Bat: Close to the crack of dawn, she does a quick patrol route when she spots a masked robber making their way out of a bank with a bag full of valuables. She makes her descent, going undetected with her parasol before pouncing on the robber, tying them up, and leaving them for the bank manager to find and call the police on
Moon Bat: Right at midnight, Moon Bat finds a few art thieves sneaking into a museum. She manages to go unnoticed as she apprehends each of them one by one before they can make off with any priceless art pieces
Punk Bat: Was at a rock concert when he spotted this one girl being harassed by some older men. He whipped out his brass knuckles and scared the men off, then continued to survey the crowd from above on the rafters
Song Bat: With their confidence and love of the theater, they engage a few at-risk youths to try out community theater and put them on a more positive path
Incognito Bat: Disguised themself as a child and went undercover at an orphanage when the number of children's hospital patients seemed to rise up. What she found were the adults physically harming the children and paying no mind to their safety, and she wasted no time apprehending them and calling the police
Buff Bat: Provided muscle for the residents at a women's shelter when a few incels decided to cause trouble and protest. They only got physical when this one guy threw a brick, and none of the protesters were safe
Techno Bat: Used his hacking skills to invesitgate a series of cybercrimes throughout the city, and successfully stopped a team of hackers from stealing millions in euros
Magic Bat: Often entertains the kids in poorer neighborhoods with his tricks, teaches them how to skateboard, and shows a few self-defense moves
Gem Bat: While on patrol one night, she spotted two guys chasing after a woman. She wasted no time swooping in and knocking the two of them out with her chloroform. She kept their info just in case and then escorted the woman back to her home
Parkour Bat: Charged head first into a burning building a quickly got everyone out and outside with no casualties
Swimmer Bat: Prevented the fracking of the city's water supply, and successfully got the business responsible to be shut down for all sorts of environmental crimes
This took a while to come up with a type out, so expect the Recess Class and Theater Kids a little while later

Hi. Skater Sonic headcanons. I'm thinking about him rn cuz I got a skateboarder acct on my YouTube recommended.
He's one of those guys who can get up to like. absolutely INSANE speeds on a skateboard. I saw a guy on YouTube who gets up to like 40-50 mph on a longboard? Which I know is different but in my head Sonic does that regularly. Maybe he does both.
Most of the reason he actually wears gloves is to protect his hands so he doesn't scrape his fucking palms off if he has to use his hands on the ground.
He takes just fucking gnarly falls all the time. His board wobbles and he ends up throwing himself the fuck down a giant hill at 50+ mph picking up speed as he goes and lands on his face. This is a regular occurrence for him.
He's got a bunch of broken ass boards Tails will take apart to use for other things. He used to just glue the wheels back on and shit but one day he managed to break one in half and Tails asked him "hey if you can't use that anymore can I have the axels and wheels?" so now they all get pawned off to Tails if they get broken too badly.
His skateboards are covered in stickers and drawings as well. They've got a lot of character- you can always tell they're Sonic's just from the amount of energy to them.
In my head Sonic skateboards and Shadow inline skates (rollerblades). Idk what Silver does unfortunately. Only other type of skating I know (aside from roller skating, but that doesn't rlly fit him) is ice skating, and while that is talented, it's not as useful for getting around most climates as skateboarding or inline skating is.
He knows all sorts of tricks and he kinda loves to show off. You can often find him at any nearby skate park (or, if there isn't one, whatever will best substitute a skate park).
Someone- be it Tails, Amy, Knuckles, Shadow, or even Eggman- is always on his case about wearing proper gear. He doesn't think he's invincible, but he also doesn't think about consequences, so oftentimes he just neglects protection aside from gloves to, again, keep his palms from getting scraped off. And sometimes goggles/glasses to protect his eyes (like when using the Extreme Gear).
His ass could not pick up roller skating/inline skating easily. He probably thinks he could because he sees Shadow doing it all the time and he already knows one type of skating, how hard could another be?
Very hard. Very fucking hard. He can't stay on his own two feet on roller skates, let alone inline skates. He can barely stay on his butt on them.
The remedy for his bruised ego here is that the most Shadow can do on a skateboard is go like ten to twenty feet in a wobbly straight line.

your archie redraws are everything! whats the context of the first page, with tails crying and shadow looking THE MOST angry ever? what on earth is going on there?
hi i’m so glad you asked this because it gives me the chance to talk about what i consider to be one of the funniest series of events in the archie sonic series
unfortunately there’s a bit to explain here (as is usually the case with the archie sonic series), but i think it’s worth it for the FULL cultural impact of this one specific panel
lore dump below the readmore, and spoilers for archie sonic i guess? idk the series ended in like 2017 lmao
TL DR: shadow and tails mourn the death of one of the least popular characters in all of sonic history
so. let me introduce you to tommy turtle.
in the 117th chapter of archie sonic, sonic goes undercover to rescue a childhood friend of his named tommy. when robotnik took over the world years ago, everyone thought lil' tommy had been killed or roboticized - turns out, tommy is alive and has been living in enemy territory for quite some time!
anyways, surprise surprise turns out this was all an elaborate trap organized by robotnik and one of his spies named sleuth “doggy” dawg (which is the best name for any character ever). sonic and tommy make an elaborate escape where sonic uses him as a skateboard - unfortunately, a grenade gets in the way of their happy ending, and tommy turtle sacrifices himself to get sonic out of there alive.
tommy, as a character, was created to have a bold sacrifice, live for one issue, and give sonic a heartbreaking lesson on friendship or whatever.
here's the problem: the writers kept bringing tommy turtle back.
about 20 issues later, sonic goes on ANOTHER undercover mission and finds tommy AGAIN, who claims he survived the grenade because he hid in his shell.
unfortunately, this tommy turns out to be an impostor - a robotic duplicate that infiltrates sonic’s home, tries to kill him, and then nearly kills sonic’s robot dad.
so tommy is gone for real now, right?
NOPE! after this, the freedom fighters set out on ANOTHER undercover mission to find tommy AGAIN, who is about to be executed by eggman’s robots. at the very last second, he somehow outruns his fated death once more.
for some reason, this cartoon turtle simply cannot die.
after he’s rescued, tommy keeps showing up in random arcs of the comic. he has a mini story about how he isn’t good at anything. he saves three of the freedom fighters from being electrocuted to death by using a leather glove. when sonic, shadow, and metal sonic have an epic battle over a four-issue arc, tommy is just... THERE.
despite tommy getting a decent amount of time in the story, he paled in comparison to the rest of the characters in terms of personality, motivation, and general charm. because of this, he was relatively unpopular in the archie sonic community (which is a kind way to put that SO MANY PEOPLE HATED THIS IMMORTAL TURTLE).
thus begins the downfall of tommy turtle.
as a member of the freedom fighters, tommy was included in all of the wacky science shenanigans because i guess that’s what the writers decided he was good at?? in this period of his seemingly eternal life, tommy helps the gang study nanites (microscopic robots), which suddenly have a reaction to tommy. the robots conform to his seemingly indestructible shell, and give tommy shapeshifting abilities. tommy turtle gains the ability to grow wings, fly with a jetpack, and make his already indestructible shell extremely powerful.
they gave tommy fucking turtle shapeshifting abilities
however, when the head writers of the series changed around this time, the new writers began to wrap up old storylines and characters that previous writers had left unresolved. and one of the first things the new team did was finally complete the tommy turtle saga.
those nanites that gave tommy turtle superpowers? turns out, they’re under the control of one of robotnik’s evil AI programs called A.D.A.M, who has secretly been working on a master plan to become an all-powerful being. his secret weapon? tommy turtle.
A.D.A.M, now controlling tommy, wreaks havoc among the freedom fighters, kidnaps shadow and tails, and uses both super shadow and turbo tails (aka the super version of tails in archie sonic - it’s just tails wearing a cape) to summon every chaos emerald in the universe. note that archie sonic has very different chaos emerald lore than the games, there’s like... a bajillion of them. just go with it
sonic goes into his super form and fights a super version of A.D.A.M/tommy while super shadow and turbo tails chaos control the emeralds to a different dimension - that way, A.D.A.M. can no longer harness their power.
(i'm very obsessed with the panel of eggman going "WAKE UP!! GET OUT!!" to the two superpowered animals)
once the emeralds are gone, tommy takes control of his body again - however, his survival is temporary this time. tommy can't remove the nanites from his body, and there's no way to stop A.D.A.M. from returning. with the eggman fleet about to take both him and super sonic out, there's really only one thing for him to do.
tommy finally does the one thing he has constantly failed at - he sacrifices himself and dies.
tommy turtle is dead, for good this time.
finally, we get to the tails and shadow panel. tails mourns the loss of a friend, a fellow freedom fighter that had been given so many chances to try again but ultimately gave his life so the rest of the world have that same chance. and shadow is also there.
the funniest thing here is that shadow honestly had no goddamn idea who the hell tommy turtle was or why he was there, so i think he's mostly just inconvenienced by this whole event lmao
thank you for your question and thanks for reading! here are some additional shadow cringefail moments i found during my re-read of the tommy turtle saga that i really enjoyed
#consider this a warning to anyone who wants to ask me about archie sonic info#i WILL write an entire novel and it WILL be about some dumbass characters whose names sound fake#i love talking about this series it's like recounting a strange set of recurring dreams#archie sonic#sth#long post#there are like 15 other lore dumps i could do based off of the information in this one post alone#do NOT ask me about turbo tails i'll have to write an entire THESIS i swear#sonic loreposting#fernasks

Babylon Rogues Theory Update: It’s a Fucking Birdemic Out There
OKAY SO A SIMPLE CONVERSATION ON THE SONIC DISCORD HAS TURNED INTO A PEPE SILVIA CONSPIRACY
[ID: The Pepe Silva meme, but the chaos map is covered with images from Sonic, such as Jet the Hawk, Longclaw the Owl opening a ring-portal, Space Colony ARK, Old Man Owl from the OVA, Shadow the Hedgehog, the Flickies in Sonic X, Extreme Gear Boots, and Shahra the Genie. End ID.]
WE’VE STUMBLED ONTO A FRANCHISE-WIDE CONSPIRACY INVOLVING FLICKIES, DIMENSION-HOPPING, AND SHADOW BEING PART BIRD. STRAP THE FUCK IN.
First of all, this conversation was spurned on by the assumption, which I proved yesterday, that the Babylon Rogues are from another dimension than regular Mobius and were powerful dimension-hoppers until crashing.
We began the conversation simply. With flickies.
@quartzquadrant mentioned their theory that the Babylonians were an attempt to reintroduce the flickies into the series as actual characters, as the flickies were originally conceptualized to be from another dimension, as revealed in Sonic 3D Blast.
But here’s the fun thing: what’s that exact reveal?
[ID: A photo of the flickies from Sonic 3D Blast, captioned: “Flickies are mysterious birds. They live in another dimension and can travel anywhere through large rings.” End ID.]
Now “another dimension” was just relating to the Babylonians-are-Dimension-Hoppers conspiracy, buT look at that last bit! THE FLICKIES CAN TRAVEL ANYWHERE THROUGH LARGE RINGS.
Such as............. in Sonic 2020?
But here’s the thing.... who was the first character (and ONLY, considering she had to give them to Sonic) who HAD these portal rings?
LONGCLAW. THE OWL. OWLS ARE BIRDS GUYS.
[ID: Longclaw the Owl from Sonic 2020, opening a portal to another planet with a magical ring. End ID.]
Longclaw ALSO shares a design with tiles found in both the movie and the original Sonic the Hedgehog game, linking her closely with the classic world the Flickies are associated with.
[ID: Photos from both Sonic 2020 and Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), in which an owl face very similar to Longclaw appears in the stones and tiles. End ID.]
[ID: A gif of Freckle from The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo, saying “What does it mean? What does it all mean?” End ID.]
But she’s not the only owl in the franchise! Aside from the comics, there’s a couple owls- a judge in Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, a mystical keeper of the time stones in SatAM (...interesting) and..... Old Man Owl from the Sonic OVA!
[ID: Old Man Owl from the Sonic OVA. He is wearing insanely 90s clothing and carrying a tubular skateboard. End ID.]
Old Man states early on in the film that he used to be a racer in his youth... a racer like the Babylon Rogues.
[ID: A promotional photo of the modern Babylon Rogues. Wave the Swallow is on the left, Jet the Hawk in the middle, and Storm the Albatross on the right. They are riding their Extreme Gear™ hoverboards in a race. End ID.]
We’ve come full circle, but this isn’t the end of the conspiracy linking all these birds together. No, no, the conversation continued quickly, and @zorloser mentioned that, in Sonic Riders, the Babylonians were referred to as genies, which is something i included in my dimension-hopping conspiracy. However, you know who else is linked to genies?
SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG.
[ID: Two screenshots from Sonic Adventure 2, of Shadow the Hedgehog. He has just been released from cryo, and says, “Since you were so kind to release me, my master... I will grant you one wish.” End ID.]
These are Shadow’s first lines in Dark Story of Sonic Adventure 2, his introductory game, and his lines reference the motifs of gaining wishes by freeing genies. Shadow’s main plotline in SA2, as well, was the desire to grant the wishes of others, firstly Gerald’s wish for destruction and then Maria’s for peace.
Know what Shadow also is, like the Babylon Rogues? An ALIEN! He has the dna of the Black Arms aliens!
[ID: Shadow standing beside his insanely tall demon dad, Black Doom, who is probably a tumblr sexyman in another dimension I’m glad I don’t live in. End ID.]
As he “dies,” he also appears like a shooting star, such as the Arks of the Cosmos.
[ID: The Arks of the Cosmos falling from the Babylon Garden out in space, like shooting stars. End ID.]
ARKs. Like SPACE COLONY ARK. SHADOW’S HOME.
[ID: The Space Colony ARK, a floating satellite colony, as seen in the intro to Shadow the Hedgehog. It hovers above Earth with the sun behind it. End ID.]
But this all doesn’t stop there, oh no. No, no, because we realized, looking at Jet and Shadow’s designs, that they have way too many similarities.
As you can see, they have the same shape of chest fluff. Their gloves have those red-and-black squares and rings on the wrist. They have the same red, black and white colors on their shoes. They both have highlights on their quills/feathers in a similar shape, and they both have that red/black eyeshadow.
Both characters are also the leaders of their respective teams, as well as Sonic’s homoerotic rivals desperate to race him and prove they’re faster.
[ID: A gif from The Incredibles, of the teacher shouting, “Coincidence? I think NOT!” End ID.]
And it’s not just that... Shadow’s shoes are rocket boots that give him the ability to hover and glide. Know what else exists? EXTREME GEAR SHOES.
[ID: a comparison of the Extreme Gear™ shoes with Shadow’s weirdass shoes. End ID.]
Also, you know who else chose to take the form of Shadow the Hedgehog??? MEPHILES. Whose chest fluff not only looks vaguely bird-shaped, but if half of the god Solaris... a BIRD.
[ID: A closeup of Mephiles the Dark, who took the form of Shadow the hedgehog. His chest fluff resembles the silhouette a bird in flight. End ID.]
[ID: Solaris; its wings are spread like a bird and like Mephiles’s chest fluff. End ID.]
Birds are, somehow, everywhere in the Sonic franchise. They have been present from game one and keep being linked to symbols of power. And with the connection of the Babylon Rogues to Shadow, this can only mean one thing.
SHADOW IS PART BIRD.
[ID: A meme from Buzzfeed Unsolved. Shane, delusional, says “i’ve connected the two dots.” Ryan, just as delusional, responds “you didn’t connect shit,” to which Shane simply replies, “I’ve connected them.” End ID.]
thank you and goodnight.

New Paracosm AU: Big Hero Beau
@decaykid yes, kind of...
Okay, like I said in my last post this idea came to me after listening to Fist Pump and Viva Namida on loop with pacing.
So you know like how the original Humble Pie paracosm is very western horror kind of drama, yeah? well, this paracosm is just full on ANIME BBY!!! I'm talking Space Dandy, I'm talkin' Gurren Lagann, I'm talkin maybe a little bit of Trigun, and also takes alot from action rpgs like Bayonetta, Devil May Cry, Persona, Viewitful Joe, and Wonderful 101 (but its like only two people), and takes alot from Sonic the hedgehog (mostly Sonic Underground, Sonic Adventure 2, and Sonic Forces), and little bit from Fancy Pants ( that's not an anime or a "real" video game, its just an old flash game I used to hyperfixate on).
This paracosm is completely different which is why I gave it, it's own name instead of just adjective then "!"
This version of Beau takes a lot of inspiration from Dandy ( Space Dandy), Vash The Stampede (Trigun), Sonic The Hedgehog (Sonic The Hedgehog), and Kamina (Gurren Langann)
In this paracosm, both of Beau's parents perished in a tragic accident, Beau takes his siblings to an abandoned shack and they hide out and live out there. the tragedy this motivative Beau to become stronger and a hero, not only to keep his siblings safe but others too. The last thing his mom told him was that his smile could save a thousand lives, so because of that he always keeps an upbeat, go get 'em attitude, and he doesn't want to bum his younger siblings out. His mom also gave Beau her heart shape locket before she passed on, so Beau has worn it ever since that day.
The locket is very precious to him, he doesn't let anyone touch it (other than his siblings), and if he loses it he'll go into a panic attack and can't do anything else until he finds it again.
Dev, Beau's little brother, also wants to be strong and a hero, he tries to train like his brother but he can't keep up. Beau tells Dev that he has to be strong in his own way, so Dev decides to put his tech skills to good use and make his older brother cool weapons for him to use. I forgot to mention in this paracosm some people are born with superpowers and such, and Beau's superpowers are super strength and speed, while Dev's superpower is super intelligence.
Dev can't keep up with his brother on foot, so he made himself a jetpack to keep up, and makes science weapons for himself to use.
In this paracosm, there are evil robots, pirates, bandits, ninjas, demons, fallen angels, giant spiders, bad guys who kidnap pretty people, any enemy you would find in a video game or anime yeah it's probably here. So, there's always something for Beau and Dev to fight or someone to save from something.
Beau and Dev don't have secret identities since superpowered people are common but they get to have a pretty rad transformation scene activate when they fist bump each other.
Beau fighting style is similar to that of a hack and slack fighting game, Beau mostly use his fists to fight and his speed, he'll also use guns too, but he'll only use swords if he thinks he can pull off a cool move, since not really experience using them that much. Dev made Beau special gloves and boots that make the attack range of his hit larger so its easier to take out hoards of stuff like robots (which happens lot) and big enemies like giant monsters.
His boots are also guns so its like....
Oh, and Beau also makes sure that he always looks cool when fighting just in case someone takes a pic (which happens alot). Unlike Bayonetta, Beau is more playful with his posing rather than sexy.
Dev's wits come in handy when the two come across puzzles, riddles, or finding a way out of traps on their adventures since Beau didn't complete school once his parents passed and mostly focus on raising his siblings and hero training.
Much like Sonic, Beau is very snarky and witty while fighting his enemies (or at least tries to be), he always tries to make a snarky comment or a really cool zinger before finishing off his enemy. Due to his kind of being not the sharpest tool in the shed, it can take a while for him to come up with a good zinger, so it kind of stalls fights, and sometimes it gets to the point where the enemy is just like "Oh my GOD! just KILL ME!", this also annoys and embarrasses Dev too at times.
Beau makes money from bounties and doing odd jobs around, he makes enough for his siblings to live comfortably, but there are times where he'll go hungry because he only has enough for Dev and Carrie to eat. Beau is still a kind of a lower-level hero compare to the other well know ones around.
Dev has also made a rocket ship so they can fight intergalactically on other planets
Carrie in this paracosm is still 4 years old, she has yet to show any signs of having powers, which is pretty normal for her age since people in this world don't show powers until they hit their pre-teen years.
Beau will take Carrie on their adventures if it's safe enough, but if the mission is too dangerous Beau will take her to the nearest daycare or the nearest trustworthy femme person. Beau will try to make the mission or fight end quickly as possible if he left Carrie with a stranger, there's a sigh of relief once he finds her safe, if not (which doesn't happen a lot thankfully), well somebody gonna die and Beau tries to make it up to her by spending the next few days with her, just him and Carrie.
Beau tries to put being a good guardian/older brother before being a hero and tries his best to spend as much time with Carrie and Dev as possible on chiller/lower stakes days.
Beau had never had time to really process the feeling of losing his parents, there are days where he feels down but he never lets it show around his siblings or have it affect his hero work. There are nights where those memories keep him up, sometimes he'll cry but still try to smile thru the tears.
Beau likes to give peps talks to himself in the mirror, and pep talks to Dev, when he's feeling discouraged, although most of the time those pep talks don't really make any sense Dev still appreciate his brother's kind words.
Since Beau saves people, he interacts a lot with damsels in distress, he flirts with them, but usually gets rejected for coming across as too cheesy or cocky. He doesn't really mind it tho, he actually finds it funny, but when a lady actually flirts back he gets really flustered and has to leave immediately. Despite this Beau still tries to give Dev advice on talking to girls.
Beau still smokes and drinks because the stress of having to raise young siblings, dealing with trauma, and being a hero can be alot, but he still makes sure his siblings don't see him and he doesn't get too wasted.
Other than hero stuff, Hero! Beau enjoys reading comics, parkour, skateboarding, break dancing (which he incorporates in his fighting for some really cool finishers), practicing cool poses and phrases, playing video games with his little brother, and watching barbie movies with his little sisters (since Barbie reminds him of his mom).
Oof, I think that's all I got for now....
TL;DL Basically if this version of Beau is Sonic the original Beau is more like Shadow if that makes any sense.
#paraportal#new paracosm#paracosm#paracosm: big hero beau#para: hero! beau#I still have yet to figure out how Bonnie fits into this paracosm#their dynamic is gonna be more of a 'two stupid dorks' kind of dynamic#I dont think this paracosm could get anymore anime than this#maybe I'll make bonnie a magical girl#idk would that be too much

Power Rider Hybrid
(Logo by@riceyhot)
A group called the Alloy Army commissioned several laboratories to create the next big technological wave. One group discovered a way to harness the essence of a living creature or an object into bottles creating a type of fuel they dubbed Fuelsion (fuel + fusion). Hybrid Laboratories learned they intended to use their discovery as a weapon and refused to hand it over to the Alloy Army. They decided to use it to create new technological marvels. However the Alloy Army was not fond of being rejected and used a mole to steal their research injuring a scientist in the process. Eventually Hybrid Labs was ready to test their Fuelsion and put a call out for test subjects. One of the volunteers was a young woman named Samantha, a genius without motivation she found herself interested by the concept. However during the test the Alloy Army attacked to steal the rest of the research. The Army reveals they have created monsters called Fusers, made by exposing people to the energy of Fuelsion directly. During the chaos Samantha used a special suit meant to manipulate the Fuelsion to fend off some of the attackers allowing the scientists to flee to a secondary lab. This lab had a hidden entrance inside a storage container. The scientists who remain on board decide to fight back against the Alloy Army and modify the suit Samantha used to create a Rider suit. They help her fight against Fusers by creating new weapons and restoring Fuelsion she collects from fallen Fusers into usable bottles. For reasons the scientists don’t fully understand each bottle of Fuelsion has a partner that it resonates perfectly with. The energies feed into each other unleashing their full power.

Power Rider Arcade/Hybrid: During the final battle with V.A.I some of his code ended up on the internet where it eventually found its way to a computer inside of Hybrid Laboratories. Utilizing the Fuelsion system it built itself a new body forcing the Arcade Riders to assist Hybrid and the other Riders in destroying it once and for all.

A long, in-depth review of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020
I remember playing the first Mario & Sonic game back on the Nintendo Wii. It was simple and a bit unbelievable that this was the first time these two gaming icons would be in a video game together. While the Olympics were literally nobody’s choice to have these heroes meet, it made for a fun albeit simplistic party game. I enjoyed my time with it, but it wasn’t until the second game, Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games that I fell in love with the series. The amount of variety and fan service was staggering and it was very clear that a lot of passion had gone into this game, but as the games moved to the Wii U, it was apparent that the creative was drying up as the game focused more on the typical Olympic events.
That takes us to 2019 where the series has returned on the Nintendo Switch. Considering the fact that this game was made to coincide with the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, I was very excited. Not only is this the home country of both Mario and Sonic, but it’s where I’ve been living for the past 4 and a half years. I was worried when the series skipped the Pyeongchang Olympics that we would never see them in Japan. However, fate would be kind to me. The only question was: does this new edition reach the previous highs that the best Mario & Sonic outings have reached or is it another missed opportunity.
This game has a very interesting premise too. Since Tokyo was the host of the Olympics back in 1964, there is a time travel plot where Sonic, Eggman, Mario, Bowser, and Toad get sucked into a video game world based on those events. It allows for a fresh idea presented with classic sprites of these beloved characters. With the 2020 Olympic events combined with the 1964 events, there are plenty of events to try out.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t describe how nice the game looks. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is a very good looking game. In single player, the game constantly runs at 60FPS with highly detailed character models and lush environments. The crowds consisting of Toads, Shy Guys, Flickies, and more are still 2D textures that are animated well, but when inspected, they do not hold up. In Olympic events where the game is handled in splitscreen, the framerate can often take a hit. It’s nothing unplayable, but it is very noticeable. The menus are also very slick though a bit simplistic from past entries. Even so, you’ll be treated with wonderful character renders over the backdrop of various Tokyo locales. The only problem with the visuals come from the retro 1964 mode. While the sprites look fine, there is a huge clash between the Super Mario characters being 8-bit sprites while the Sonic characters are 16-bit sprites. It seems as this was done for broad appeal since Mario’s NES outings and Sonic’s Genesis outings are arguably their most well-known appearances. Even so, it doesn’t mesh together perfectly.
So the game looks good for the most part, but how does it sound? Honestly, it’s a mixed bag and a particularly odd one too. During story mode, characters do not speak in full sentences. Sonic may say “Hey” while the text box fills in an entire sentence of dialogue. This isn’t a problem, but what is a bit distracting are the voice samples chosen; specifically, the Super Mario characters. Mario and Luigi have no text boxes with their dialogue, but instead will only make small noises or words. It becomes increasingly annoying as their responses are so limited. You cannot skip or fast forward any dialogue boxes or animations either. There was no reason to keep them from talking as Bowser, Princess Peach, and Toad all talk just as the Sonic characters do. However, characters like Luigi, Daisy, and the Koopalings have the most peculiar voice samples. Daisy sounds like she’s about to cough up her lunch and the Koopalings have this odd reverb effect that sounds like a rendering error. Many of these samples just sound unpleasant and you’ll be hearing them enough that it becomes grating.
Now, the Mario & Sonic series has been praised by fans for their amazing remixes of classic songs. These remixes allowed some unique flair to be given to countless songs from Mario and Sonic’s catalogue. So, one may wonder how many remixes there are in Mario & Sonic Tokyo. Two. There are only two remixes from the respective series. Sonic’s side received a rather standard and unimpressive remix of Metropolitan Highway from Sonic Forces. It doesn’t improve the original song at all and feels a bit half baked. On the other side, Mario received a remix of Peach’s Castle theme and it’s frankly awful. Just sped up with synth-like instruments. When this has been a repeated highlight for these games, (even in the less-than-stellar Wii U games), it’s baffling that SEGA and Nintendo didn’t try harder here. It feels lazy and extremely disappointing. In past games, you could go back to any event and change the standard background music to whatever songs you have unlocked. It’s just not possible here. That means that during the events, you’ll be listening to original music. Thankfully, it’s mostly very good! I am a big fan of the tunes set to Rugby Sevens, a battle with Metal Sonic, Surfing, and Dream Shooting. A lot of the music has a Japanese flair to it and it’s very well composed. Some songs are extremely catchy and I’ve found myself remembering and humming them outside of my time with the game. However, during the lengthy story cutscenes, you may be cycling through the same 5 or 6 songs and it can become old very quickly. They are good songs, but even the retro music wears thin when it’s been playing for most of your downtime.
Sonic fans have always been passionate about the voice work of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Thankfully, the new voice clips (during events) are pretty good. Characters have interesting remarks when winning and some of them speak perfectly to their established characters. I believe that for the Sonic characters, most if not all of the voice clips are new. There are some baffling ones like Sonic saying “Ole!” and “Right through that wall!” at the most random times. Characters like Tails and Vector are very endearing in this game. Even so, it works well and as a fan, it was fun to hear. The Mario characters definitely have some new voice clips, but it’s hard to tell when their characters don’t vocally emote as often outside of this game. I’m sure there are some repeated clips, but there not all reused.
As this is a minigame collection, it’s important to question how the game actually plays. Overall, I think the Olympic events have been reworked in a significant enough way that it feels rewarding… though not perfect. For example, the 100M race, skateboarding, and badminton are a few events that are just too simplistic for their own good. They are just not as fulfilling to play through as other events. Rugby sevens, soccer (which is strangely called Football despite the fact that Japan calls the sport soccer), Karate, Archery, Sport Climbing, and Equestrian are a few of the events that are just exhilarating. Most of the events have done an admirable job allowing for motion controls with two joy cons, one joy con, or buttons. Since I have been gaming since the early 1990s, I almost always prefer button controls. Even so, I have to admit that the motion controls are fun… for some of the events. Archery is a blast with motion controls, as are the track & field events. The game seems to make a conscious effort to balance the less accurate use of motion controls to button controls. That’s great, but it can make some events feel unfairly difficult due to the handicap. For example, when using button controls, the Boxing event feels almost impossible to win without a huge amount of luck. If you’re knocked down while using buttons, you have to jam the A button to get up and it feels nearly impossible to recover within the allotted time. It’s something that was so aggravating that I found myself praying that SEGA would release a quality of life patch for this game to iron out some of the problems.
The 1964 events are pretty different from the 2020 events. Since they’re based on retro video games, they only allow for button controls. But with this aesthetic comes simplified gameplay. I found these events to be fun, but not too engaging. Shooting, 10M Platform, Marathon were pretty fun, but I wasn’t wowed by these. It’s 2019 and I think I can speak for many when I say that using retro sprites in your game doesn’t excite people as much as it used to. It sometimes comes across as desperate fan service. While these events are fun, I have to question: Has the game really benefited from going with this throwback? It has certainly increased the amount of events and didn’t hurt the overall package, but I also wasn’t blown away by their inclusion. Speaking of these retro events, it’s very saddening that it’s only limited to 8 characters. Classic characters like Donkey Kong, Metal Sonic, and especially Amy Rose are left out for seemingly no reason. This kind of exclusivity from the “classic” side of Sonic has been limited to Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Dr. Eggman for a long while now and it seems to ignore that Amy was part of that original crew too. Moreover, I’m sure fans would have loved to see more characters in this retro style. If SEGA/Nintendo had made more of an effort, we could have possibly seen more modern characters like Shadow the Hedgehog or Waluigi.
Throughout story mode there are also a number of mini games. In 2020, Luigi and Tails partake in many events. Whether it’s climbing up the side of Tokyo Tower, battling Shy Guys, or kicking a rugby ball to attack Metal Sonic; these events share their DNA with the normal Olympic events. Some of the ideas are creative, but they are over before they really begin. Again, they’re simplistic and through that simplicity is their downfall. I love the ideas on display, but I want them to be more engaging. One particular mini game that I was fond of has you searching for a particular Toad at the famous Shibuya Scramble. It’s basically a virtual version of a Where’s Waldo game, but it’s very fun and unique. The only problem is that it ends after finding three targets. If there was an option for this to be expanded into an endurance mode, then I think it would really have some legs.
The mini games for the 1964 world are a bit more unique, but are still overly simple. You might be sneaking into a museum, using Sonic’s speed to chase down a bullet train (shinkansen), or even using the biplane known as the Tornado to attack Eggman’s mechs above Tokyo. Interestingly, that sky battle is the most complex of all the mini games, but even it ends after three stages. What works so well with this mode is that the stage consists of numerous Sonic enemies with decent fan service throughout. You’ll battle Eggman’s first boss from Sonic the Hedgehog 1 as well as Mecha Sonic and the Metropolis Zone boss from Sonic 2. It’s so bizarre that this great amount of fan service is so hidden. You must re-enter this game a second time from a completely different menu to see this.
There are three Dream Events in this game. The first being Dream Racing which is honestly fantastic. It’s based on a stage from Sonic Forces and features a downhill race on hoverboards with Mario Kart-like items. It’s a bit clunky on certain parts, but it’s a lot of fun. The kinetic energy of the whole thing makes me want more than just one stage based on this. It’s definitely a highlight and if there was entire game based on a more refined version of this... I wouldn’t be opposed. Following that is Dream Karate based on the Mushroom Kingdom from Super Mario Odyssey. It’s a mess. There doesn’t seem to be any clear strategy and it favors chaos over defined goals. Also, it hardly uses the Mario universe. It’s just a square arena set in a Mario world with a bad remix in the background. Very disappointing. Lastly is Dream Shooting which takes place in a Japanese temple with each corner of the temple representing a different season. It uses the gyro controls of the Nintendo Switch and it’s very fun. A little clunky here and there, but enjoyable nonetheless. It has one crucial flaw in the fact that your character will laugh every single time they hit a target. It gets annoying quick when you’re constantly firing away and hearing them cackle nonstop. I don’t know how that sort of thing still gets by developers.
The story mode was heavily pushed with a lot of the promotion for this game. I can honestly say that this is not the type of game that needs a story, but it’s the kind of dopey thing that I am absolutely on board for. I was hoping for an over-the-top plot that had these characters doing ridiculous things based on idea from the Olympics. My expectations weren’t completely baseless either. Past games on the Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS have had story campaigns and they got wild with shadow clones of the characters to Dr. Eggman releasing giant robots. The games even featured some surprisingly well animated cutscenes too. You wouldn’t be wrong in thinking that I was hyped for this mode. What we got, however, was bare bones. I like the corny idea of the heroes and villains getting sucked into the retro game world. That’s wonderful, but unfortunately it doesn’t really get zanier than that. In 2020, Tails and Luigi work to save their friends by participating in regular Olympic events. In 1964, Mario and Sonic save themselves by participating in regular Olympic events. Yes, there are occasional mini games, but as I mentioned earlier, they are so simple and feel like they’ve finished before they’ve begun. Where’s the fun, the stupidly epic nature you can achieve when featuring franchises like Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog? Why can’t Eggman use the Gold Medals to make this fire monster that will compete against Mario and Sonic? Why can’t Metal Sonic cause chaos in Tokyo while Tails and Luigi stop him with a small platforming challenge? I know that there was an attempt with the mini games that are available, but it still comes up short and leaves me wanting a lot more.
This problem is completely related to the story as well. Meaning that while it has some genuinely great moments, it is a slog to get through at times. It has one formula and it follows that formula for the entire campaign. Every time, it’s a chore of: “go to this venue, talk to the character, face that character in an event, have them give you an item.” It never breaks off from this formula. Even the mini games follow the same structure. Again, where’s the heart? This is just running through the motions of a story. I’d love for it to really go wild with the Olympics and the characters at their disposal. One thing I couldn’t wrap my head around was the use of Luigi. This game really, really, really likes Luigi. He has the most mini games out of anybody, he’s featured in the story more than any other character, and once the game is finished, you are stuck using Luigi for any of the events within the epilogue. This includes the Dream Events too. Considering the fact that this game came out just one day after Luigi’s Mansion 3, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was intentional. It’s very odd that a game with Mario & Sonic in the title gives so much of the spotlight to Luigi. Along with his annoying vocal grunts that I mentioned earlier, I found Luigi got on my nerves throughout the story. The game also never lets you control any Sonic characters outside of a few events. Despite the fact that they are in pairs for the entire story, on the map screens, you can only control Mario in 1964 and Luigi in 2020. Not for nothing, but I’d like to control Sonic and Tails if I had the choice. This isn’t a huge complaint, but it’s something I noticed.
There are some positives to the story mode though. Certain character interactions are fantastic. I really loved bumping into Jet the Hawk, Wario & Waluigi, and Ludwig von Koopa during the campaign. Jet still refers to Sonic by his full name which was a bit of character consistency that made me smile. Sonic is also written pretty well. Since Mario doesn’t talk, Sonic does all of the talking for the heroes. He’s got a great mix of cockiness, heroism, and that cheesy factor that makes him so likeable. I was happy seeing how Sonic acted even if it wasn’t anything too mind blowing. Bowser and Eggman are written a bit more incompetent than usual, but it works well for comedic effect. There is also a moment in the climax that taps into that greatness I was hoping for. It’s a fantastic moment that I won’t spoil, but I enjoyed it and cared about what was happening to all of the character in the retro game world.
Throughout the map screens, you can find trivia pods. This seems like cheap filler, but I have to be honest… I actually found them very fun. There are 4 types of trivia cards: Olympic trivia, Japan trivia, Mario character trivia, and Sonic character trivia. I found myself learning a lot about the Olympics and Japan through this game. Often I became aware of things I never knew of. As a fan too, seeing Amy’s love for fortune reading or the game teasing that Wario and Waluigi are just two dudes who hang out together was a nice treat. However, being a big fan also means you know when they make mistakes. So when they say that Eggman Nega is Eggman’s descendant, I can’t help, but roll my eye. Yes, I know the Sonic Rivals games messed up the continuity, but the Sonic Rush games clearly established he’s from another dimension. His name is Eggman NEGA for crying out loud! In fact, his whole character is stated time and time again that he hates Eggman and yet he spends a vast majority of the campaign actively trying to save Eggman from the video game world. How many wires got crossed when they were making this game? Also, some pods say that Shadow being born on the Space Colony ARK is just a rumor... when we’ve had TWO games dedicated to that backstory. It just left me flabbergasted. Other trivia pods are just a waste of time though. “What color are Wendy’s shoes,” read one question that had a full body picture of Wendy attached to it. (Yes, you could clearly see her shoes). Were they that lazy with some of these?
One particular thing about the story mode that had me laughing while also sighing was how much this game praises Japan. It’s honestly hilarious. Talking to Toads or animals around the map screens almost always has them saying how amazing Japan is, how the Olympics are this perfect accumulation of everybody’s efforts, or how nice and incredible Japanese achievements and citizens are. I’m not saying that Japan is a bad country, but when you’re constantly being told this stuff, after a while it just seems like excessive. I’m not blind to the fact that this game was made to be a commercial of sorts for the 2020 Olympic games and for Japan too, but the game clearly has more love and more of a desire to promote Japan than it does the two lead stars of the game. Let’s be honest here, Olympic fans aren’t coming out in droves to play this game, Mario and Sonic fans are.
Online play has been included too. Honestly, there isn’t too much to say about it. If you’ve played Super Smash Bros. Ultimate or Super Mario Maker 2 online before then you know what to expect. Nintendo’s shoddy online service doesn’t do Mario & Sonic any favors. It’s functional, but button delay and occasional lag are very apparent and do hamper the experience. I enjoyed a few games of Rugby Sevens online, but I never felt like I had as much control as I did when I was playing solo. For games like the Javelin Throw or Triple Jump that require pinpoint accuracy, I don’t see how this is going to be viable. Nintendo can make some great games, but they are constantly behind in all other aspects.
Plenty can be said about Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. Mechanically, all of the changes to the many events have benefited how they played. There’s a lot to experience here, but the game shies away from using the potential of having such iconic heroes in their line-up. I don’t know if it’s incompetence or laziness, but this doesn’t not reach the heights that it should. It has less Dream Events, less music remixes, less fan service, and a less ambitious story than previous Mario & Sonic games. Many people come into these games knowing they’ll be simple, but also feeling that the fan service and winks to the source material will elevate it into something great. Nevertheless, it feels like SEGA and Nintendo believed that putting Sonic and company in cute outfits would be enough to excuse other lackluster elements. I worry that this review may have come across as overly negative. There are many things I love about this game and I find that the game can be a real blast to play! The variety of the events and the pure fun factor of some cannot be denied. There are many good qualities to be found in this product, but when it lacks that special shine and polish that is to be expected by now, it inevitably feels disappointing. I don’t hate this game in the slightest, but I’d be lying if I said it I wasn’t left wanting more as a fan. SEGA and Nintendo are big companies and they can do better than this; we should expect more from them. At the end of the day, I will definitely be popping this game in from time to time. The mechanics are fun and there are lovable characters in here. I just wish they were celebrated more than the Olympics themselves.

166. Sonic the Hedgehog #98
Sonic Adventure 2
Writer: Karl Bollers Pencils: Patrick "Spaz" Spaziante Colors: Patrick Spaziante and Nelson Ribeiro
Welcome to Sonic Adventure 2, everyone! Now, you would be excused for thinking that the comic would want to handle such a highly anticipated and ultimately successful game in the same manner as it did the first one, but you would be wrong! I'm going to spoil it for you right now - we only get part of the story in the comics. This one issue used to cover the entirety of the game, and as we'll see this presents some serious problems. But let's dive in, I'll save my rants for after we go over everything.
So our story doesn't actually begin where the previous issue left off. Instead, it begins three months ago, right on the tail end of the previous Sonic Adventure, in fact. The comics never really did address exactly what happened to Eggman in between being chased out of Station Square by Silver Sonic, and returning to Robotropolis. Well, as it turns out, he ended up being chased, somehow, all the way to one Prison Island, where Silver Sonic cornered him and blasted the ground out from under him, causing him to fall down a dark hole. Satisfied that it had killed him, Silver Sonic returned to Station Square to resume its defensive protocol there, but in actuality he had fallen into a secret lab with something very interesting hidden inside…
Now fast forward to a mere week ago. In the dead of night within Station Square, a mysterious figure broke into a top-security vault to steal the city's last remaining Chaos Emerald. Silver Sonic tried to prevent the theft, but…
News of the theft soon reached the desk of the city's president, who mistook the figure as the hero who had defended Station Square from Chaos mere months ago, because apparently in every Sonic canon, no one can ever tell Sonic and Shadow apart, not even Sonic's best goddamn friends. Seriously, at least in the anime it's explained as being a deliberate set-up by GUN to cover their own asses regarding the Project Shadow disaster years ago. I know I've joked before about Sonic being an extremely average-looking Mobian hedgehog which is why he's so easily mistaken for other people, but seriously, Shadow and Sonic's profiles and quill style don't even look alike, let alone their fur color.
That is a very bizarre-looking Rouge. For whatever reason, they decided to draw her a lot in this era with like… claw hands, and I don't even understand where they got that from. In the game itself one of her upgrades is called "Pick Nails" and I guess you could extrapolate that to mean razor-sharp nails under her gloves that don't show up on her low-poly 3D model or something, but all her 2D art depicts her with normal-looking rounded fingertips, so I don't even know. Anyway, the comic goes on about how the president put together an elite task force to track Sonic down and arrest him for his supposed crimes, and now they've finally found him just outside Knothole. Man, if some randos from Station Square could find where Knothole was, how the hell has Eggman not figured it out yet? They pull out actual, deadly rifles and start firing wildly at him, and he dances around cheekily, stealing their guns and taunting them. This ends when they shoot an electrified net onto him, and soon he's handcuffed in the back of their helicopter, being taken to the hidden city. Of course, we know how this goes from here - he breaks free inside the 'copter and bursts out its side, peeling off a strip of metal to use as his makeshift skateboard, because even though this isn't the 90s anymore, it's still the 90s.
We're then treated to a short montage of Spaz's interpretation of City Escape - landing on the streets, surfing down sloped roads, soaping on walkway rails and leaping over any obstacles in his way. Honestly, the action is a bit hard to follow - Spaz is certainly a talented artist in many respects, but I think his decision here to move on from his somewhat simpler designs from before hurts rather than helps, as the action and lines become so chaotic that you have to really concentrate to follow what's going on. There's just a bit too much happening, so that your eyes are drawn all over the place without really focusing on a specific focal point of each image. But anyway, we all know how City Escape ends - with the iconic GUN truck chase!
And that's… it! No, seriously, that's all we get for the actual story of SA2. The final text box invites us to play the game itself to see how it all ends, but there's a number of problems with that, the foremost being that the game takes place in an entirely different canon. We've got completely different circumstances that led up to these events. We've got characters missing - Tails still hasn't been returned to Knothole yet, Knuckles is off somewhere else struggling with his newfound powers, and humans aren't even the dominant species on the planet like they are in the game. This would leave any comic fan with a bitter taste in their mouth, as there's no actual resolution provided and no explanation for how the story will play out with so many of the original players out of commission. Many issues from now, Ian Flynn actually addressed this exact problem and gave a condensed version of events to explain exactly what we're missing, so at least we have that to look forward to in the future. There is one more story after this, and I have additional problems with that one, but let's cover the rest of the issue before I give my final opinions.
As the Shadow Awakes!
Writer: Ken Penders Pencils: Ron Lim Colors: Frank Gagliardo
So this story actually jumps us back fifty years to see Shadow's beginnings. Professor Gerald, Eggman's grandfather on his mother's side, has been working for a long time on his latest project, which he hopes will see the end of disease and untimely death and even be able to cure his granddaughter Maria's unspecified terminal illness. This project is, of course, Shadow the Hedgehog, who, as an excited and astonished Gerald watches, begins to move inside his pod. The inexplicably-brunette Maria suddenly calls him at his lab, telling him that she can see a military spaceship flying toward the ARK, their space station, and Gerald, in a panic, orders her to come to him. He knows that the military is here to take possession of his project, and believing them to be too simple-minded to understand his intentions for the project, wants to evacuate immediately. He's immediately proven right, as the military men who board the station scoff at the idea that an "old scientist and his crippled granddaughter" could pose any trouble to them as they intend to take the professor's project by force. Gerald sends Maria and Shadow, the latter now out of his pod, to evacuate in an escape pod, but of course, we know how this ends…
I think this is the only Sonic media I can think of that actually directly shows Maria dying. In both the game and the anime, the shot happens offscreen, and Shadow is ejected before Maria actually takes her last breath. I do have a problem with how the scene is portrayed here, however, as a big conflict that Shadow goes through during SA2 is his vast misinterpretation of her last request to him, whereas here she seems to just die immediately without saying another word. The military takes Gerald into custody, and shortly thereafter recovers Shadow from the escape pod, taking them both to Prison Island where they force Gerald to continue his work under their supervision. Gerald, however, is devastated at Maria's death, and thus plans out his revenge in secret under the guise of continuing his work as demanded.
The military eventually caught on to his nefarious plans, and had Gerald executed and Shadow sealed away in suspended animation on Prison Island, where it remained undisturbed and forgotten for the next fifty years. Of course, this is what Eggman found on the island, and now he's poised to use his grandfather's own work to conquer the world. My biggest problem with this story, ultimately, is that it essentially acts as one huge spoiler for the game. Everyone now, almost twenty years on, probably knows the general gist of the story, but this comic was published when it was still very new, and this entire story basically spoils the biggest twist in the game right off the bat. Furthermore, in this story, Shadow literally wakes up, goes straight to the pod, watches Maria - who he knows nothing about - die, and then gets sealed away in his stasis pod for fifty years. There's literally no time for him to even develop a personality, let alone a relationship with Maria, which is the single most important thing in his backstory. I believe this was later retconned, but this is still a huge thing to overlook in an adaption of this game.
But anyway, yeah, that's it. That's all we get for the time being. A few brief glimpses of Shadow, and one whole cameo from Rouge. It will be a while yet before Shadow gets to make his reappearance, since like in the game, at the end of their adventure he falls from space and is subsequently believed to be dead. Honestly, the entire thing kind of gives off the impression that they felt like they had to make some kind of comic tie-in to the game, but didn't feel like interrupting what they already had going with the whole "Sonic goes to high school" thing, which is clearly far more interesting of a story. So they basically went "yeah, something like this happened, but now let's just get back to the real story." It's honestly very weird, so weird that, again, they needed a later fix-it issue to explain everything, but for now, we'll just have to move on.

Sparkle The Hedgehog Bio
Sparkle was created alongside her twin brother Shadow by Doctor Gerald Robotnik for the same reason her brother was made. To “heal the world.” The project was named “Project Shadow and Sparkle”. Her and her brother were unstoppable. The best duo you could ever see. That is until her brother was captured. On that day, when the two were found and threatened to be held captive, only one sibling was able to escape. Shadow sacrificed himself so Sparkle can escape. She disappeared after that never to be heard from again. For near a decade she spent her life in lonely, depressed solitude devastated from her brother's capture. Then she met the blue blur known as Sonic the hedgehog. The two hit it off instantly. They went on so many adventures together. A couple years after the two met she was reunited with her twin brother again, unfortunately under terrible circumstances. It took what felt like centuries for the two to rekindle their former relationship. To make matters worse, she was unaware of Maria's murder, who she was also close with, and once she heard the news she was heartbroken
She shares the same powers as her brother, but doesn't use them as much as him. The only difference between the two is, Shadow has his fast high tech shoes and Sparkle has a high-tech skateboard that when she rides it makes her go just as fast as Sonic and Shadow. She also can transform into most forms Sonic becomes. The only exception is in Sonic Unleashed, she becomes a vampire instead of a werehog
She's a secondary protagonist in every Sonic game except for Sonic Forces, where an evil clone of herself is a secondary antagonist
In Sonic and The Black Knight, an alternate universe version of Sparkle is seen as playing the role of The Black Knight, who helps Sonic along the way
In Sonic Forces, she had gone missing before the game even starts. There's no cutscene, she's just gone. She spent most of her time with Shadow during the whole game until their big reveal. She fights alongside him against their evil clones, and in Episode Shadow
In Sonic and The Black Knight her true name is Sir Noir Chevalier, with a slick and thin black sword named Halberd. She's the only knight with a last name. Her name is revealed at the very end of the story. Her armor used to be pure silver. That is until she rebelled against King Arthur. She believed his ruling was unfair and almost evil and therefore she was shunned away from the round table. It hurt since she was so close to the other knights, Sir Lancelot especially. She ran off, and still wanting to be a knight, she painted her armor pure black, cut her hair, and gave her horse armor to hide herself and started calling herself and introducing herself only as The Black Knight. The other knights only recognize her due to her sword. At the end of the game, during the fight against King Arthur, Noir removes her helmet in front of Arthur and reveals her name and backstory. She then proceeds to have a duel with Arthur before Sonic can get to him and nearly dies in the process. She is soon healed by The Lady of the Lake and becomes apart of Sonic's new round table

sonic boom but i insert a bunch of other characters in it. bonus gay
mighty and ray - sonic’s childhood friend, mighty, moves to bygone island alongside his adopted brother ray. the two join team sonic, though it seems like mighty doesn’t just see sonic as a pal
bean - bean helps eggman out with some Crime Shit, but leaves his side towards the end since he thinks the guy’s too bossy
bark - when the colder regions of bygone island starts to become strangely warmer, he sets out to figure out the issue. its eggman’s machine fucking around with nature, which leads to bark angrily destroying the thing. bean is amused by this and think hes “cool and interesting”, so the two become friends. episode is usually pretty silent bc he doesnt talk here
fang and also rouge - both of them discover the chaos crystals and try to steal it from one another, only for team sonic to take them and place them in a safer area
witchcarters - wendy places various curses around bygone island, and with tails going unaffected by it, its up to him to stop her and her cronies
battle kukku - the kukkus attempt to claim bygone island for themselves, but eggman won’t let them have it. meanwhile, tails has a bit of rivalry with the son of their leader and the owl guy with the weird name wants to one up eggy
honey - amy buys a new dress (which resembles modern amy’s dress, but longer), leading to honey growing in popularity among the citizens. she thanks amy and starts to generously gift her...to rather severe degrees. she eventually tones it down and the two become friends
tiara (i know shes cut but idc) - tiara and her dad visit bygone island out of curiosity towards the chaos crystals, though it becomes difficult as the safe haven for them has tight security
gamma and omega - both were built by eggman (and also are technically in the same series in this? idk boom’s an au it doesnt matter) and later betray him after seeing the good in nature. they meet the cubots and adjust to their new lives
vanilla, cream, and cheese - all three try to find ways to defeat eggman and other villains without using much violence and instead peace. but in the end, they learn that sometimes conflicts have to have disagreeable endings
espio and charmy - espio’s clan disbands, so he searches for a new one-only to find himself caring for an orphaned bee
tikal and the whole echidna tribe tbh - team sonic take a trip to angel island after knuckles gets really nostalgic over it, only to be shocked upon seeing echidnas living there
chaos - one of wendy’s spells still prevail, and manages to spread onto angel island. this spell gives water life, and things quickly go off the rails due to chaos’ inconsistent form changes
maria and gerald - eggman’s relatives find him, and are extremely disappointed by his choices in life. since gerald inspired him when he was young, they send him and hope he can knock some sense into the guy. meanwhile, maria (who’s adopted which is why shes still young in this) meets a mysterious black and red hedgehog
emerl - cream befriends one of tails’ new creations. things go haywire, but he’s rebuilt into gmerl afterwards since cream got horribly upset over the gizoid’s betrayal
silver - while testing his time travel skills, he finds himself stuck in the past, leading team sonic to teach him everything
blaze - a faraway kingdom messages team sonic. they request help, as they have been taken over by the battle kukku. when they arrive, the king and queen are missing, so they team up with their daughter (obviously blaze) in order to defeat battle kukku again (note: stories of team sonic have been told by travelers going from one place to another)
marine - while making sure that the kingdom’s at safety, blaze meets a raccoon that immediately attaches to her, as she’s her biggest fan. she isn’t fond of her at first, but when sonic tells blaze the story of how he met tails, she realizes marine isn’t much different from tails back then and decides to take her under her wing
mephiles - shadow comes across a scepter that unleashes a silhouette that copies his appearance. said silhouette turns into an actual hedgehog, and follows him around endlessly
elise - a human mysteriously washes ashore on bygone island, with only the memory of heat and sun. she doesn’t seem to know the existence of mobians either, so team sonic n friends have to help her adjust and discover her memories (also why does she got fire powers) (theres probably an ep featuring both mephiles and elise figuring out theyre both connected somehow)
the babylon rogues - a team of skateboarders challenge sonic to a contest, so their leader can prove that hes better than him. except theres no skating rink at bygone island so they have to struggle through the process of getting one
chip - sonic comes across a fairy, who immediately latches onto him. since chip is the type of fairy that “becomes attached to the person that first sees/rescues them”, sonic can’t really get rid of him and instead just has to go with it. the two are pals by the end
the wisps - honestly colors in itself could be a multipart boom ep, so imagine that game but with team sonic + amy, sticks, mighty, ray, and chip
the deadly six - team sonic discovers a magical conch, and upon blowing it, they gain the attention of some weird creatures. as it turns out, they somehow landed on bygone island and have to return to their home planet; lost hex
infinite and the jackal squad - a new punk squad starts causing a ruckus in bygone island, which eventually leads to a takeover. shadow finally starts taking maria’s advice and helps out with pushing them back down, though they end up joining eggman’s side
gadget - sonic gets a new big fan. hes weary at first, but learns that gadget isn’t as obsessive as the last one and that big fans don’t automatically mean they are creepy. its wholesome
extra
nazo - when tiara experiments with the chaos crystals, she accidentally summons a mysterious hedgehog
sonia and manic - sonic’s siblings hurriedly bust into sonic’s shack, much to his confusion, until they tell him news that all three have been awaiting for years
ashura - a sonic lookalike prides himself as sonic’s biggest rival, even though sonic has NEVER met him
#ive done this before but i'll do it again#theres a bunch of other eps where everyone interacts (like rouge gets an entire character arc in my head)#but. splat#part 2 with archie characters eventually#sonic the hedgehog#sonic boom#long post#au tag

Power Rider Hybrid- Samantha Nguyen - A 22 year old woman, Samantha has a brilliant mind but is lazy and unfocused. She volunteers to test the Fuelsion because the concept interested her and when the villains attacked she used the tech to fight back and defend the scientists. She decides to help reclaim the stolen tech and for the first time has motivation. At first the only bottles she has are Hare and Artillery.
