Sonic 3d Blast Review (Sega Saturn)

Woo where do i begin with this bad boy. I guess i will start off by saying ive already played through this entire game on the genesis via emulation years ago. Only way I was actually able to beat it was to intense use of emulation. The game itself isnt actually very hard per-say its just for collecting all the chaos emeralds where the save states are needed.

The game has 8 zones with 3 acts per followed by a boss at the end of all of them. I noticed the visuals look especially better than the ones that were there on the genesis version. Everything pops and the colors are much brighter. Had to get used to some different stuff like the loading times and the special stages. The loading times are an absolute slog.

When it comes to power ups it's the standard fair for sonic games things like invincibility and and shield capsules. It has this new on though that let's you use a homing attack much like the one found in Sonic Adventure, it's gone if you get hit at all though. Which is very needed considered the perspective. It's isometric this time which though I think is visually fine it's actually very difficult to get around. You have a hard time judging where enemies are when you try to jump on them or hit them with your spin dash. It's quite the pain. After awhile I would say you get used to it though.

So the objective of this game is to defeat all the enemies in a given area and collect the flickies inside them. Once you've done that you can take them to the end of the stage to complete the level. However if you get hit or the line of flickies that follow you get broke (ya the enemy doesn't even have to hit you specifically) then the flickies will scatter and you have to get them all back. I won't spoil it for you but all the flickies do different things some hop high and some are very fast so it's a challenge to try to grab them all back.

The special stages are accessed by finding tails and knuckles somewhere in the stage with 50 rings are more which is hard let me tell you. However much like the genesis special stages these aren't the hardest in the world but this half pipe design is much more fun and interesting than the other. Just like Sonic 2s really but a little easier and tails isn't there to get in the way. You shouldn't have a problem getting all the chaos emeralds if you can actually get access to all the stages themselves.

You'll be seeing this screen a whoooooole lot.

The bosses are extremy easy actually usually a very easy pattern to watch for and then taking advantage of it. Nothing too crazy. I found them personally to be not that interesting as a whole.

My conclusion for this game would be that it is kind of an underrated classic. Due to there not being a real Saturn exclusive sonic game released at the time so many people simply wrote this game off at the time. But I think if you have an open mind and some patience you can find some fun in it at least just to say you played it.

This news might be disappointing for SEGA fans who care about the preservation of the companies’ rich history of video games ranging from arcade to consoles, including myself and fellow SEGAbits writers. As of now, SEGA plans to delist a selection of games and bundles from virtual stores across gaming platforms including Steam, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and Playstation starting on December 6th at 11:59pm PST.

If you happen to own the games on the following platforms, they will still be available in your library. You can still get them all for very good prices, so be sure not to miss out on the opportunity.
