OK so I was listening to TV girls album who really cares while drawing our favorite black punk and that made me think when the song heaven is a bedroom came on I just immediately thought of them so could you please write a song fic

A/N: Thanks for the request! I’ve never written a songfic before, so I enjoyed getting to stretch my writing muscles with this one. Also, the lyrics are not in chronological order, I just added them according to how they fit the fic, lol

I have no idea what time period Hobie’s universe is set in, but for the sake of this fic and all future ones I’ll say it’s the 80s. Also, this takes place early on in his time as Spider-Punk, so he might be OOC.

You'll forgive me for thinking heaven was her bedroom

It's as close as I would ever get

Hobie Brown didn’t think he was going to heaven. He didn’t believe in it anyway; he always thought the bible was just a distraction, a cudgel for the upper class to keep people praying for more instead of fighting for more.

But if there was ever a place that felt like heaven, it was here, in your bedroom.

He took a deep breath and blew it out, the smell of the weed he brought mingling with the high-class perfume you wore. Beside him, you stirred from your half-asleep state and lazily dragged a hand down his bare chest. You looked up at him through thick eyelashes – fake ones, probably the best your parents’ money could buy – and parted kiss-swollen lips to speak:

“Are you gonna leave soon?” Your voice quivered with something Hobie couldn’t quite recognize, or maybe he just didn’t want to recognize it. You asked him this question every time he came over, when all was said and done and the two of you had worn each other out. Sometimes he answered, sometimes he didn’t but regardless the answer was always no.

“Why don’t you just kip down for the night, yeah?” His voice was hazy with smoke, but the words rang loud and clear in your head. You didn’t respond, only fluttering your eyes closed.

Hobie would be gone by the time you woke up. He always was. It wasn’t because he hated you – it was the exact opposite. London wasn’t exactly known for being quiet these days, not when there were so many supervillains out and about. A good few of them had declared themselves as Hobie’s archnemeses, or Spider-Punk’s archnemeses really.

Hobie was never one to follow the rules, especially not those of the Spider-Society’s, but this was something different. If people found you and found out that you knew – and laid with – the man behind the resistance��

Hobie doesn’t think he would ever forgive himself if you got hurt.

When the party got too loud

He remembered the day he first met you like it was yesterday.

He heard a rumor that your dad was working for the Kingpin. That night when he first met you, your parents was supposed to have been gone on a “business trip.” Hobie had assumed the house would be empty, which would leave him free to look for any evidence of connection between your dad and the supervillain.

Imagine his surprise then, when he got there and found it overflowing with people.

“Looks like someone’s havin’ a bit of a knees-up, eh?” He muttered to himself as he landed on the rooftop. He peered through one of the skylights and squinted through the flashing lights to see the party. Inside the house were dozens of teenagers and young adults, bumping and grinding to what could only be described as the unholy child of capitalism and pop music. He recognized a good few of the people there too – all children of politicians and businesspeople, or others involved in upholding the regime.

This didn’t interest Hobie at all. He liked a good party as much as the next person, but this was just getting in the way of him investigating. He was ready to just leave, come back another time – but then came an angry knock at the front door, barely loud enough to pierce through the blaring music.

You came down the stairs with an expression on your face and dressed like every fashion model he had ever met. Hobie knew it was your party because you happened to look a lot like your father. When you got to the door and opened it, you were met with a red-faced older woman, almost assuredly about to launch into a tirade about your party.

With you distracted, he crawled down the side of the house and slid into the first unlocked window he could find. It was your bedroom.

Admittedly, it did look quite nice. It wasn’t just useless décor overflowing with ostentatiousness, there was actually taste here (he couldn’t say the same about the rest of the house though). He let out a low whistle as he looked around. He plopped down onto your bed, sinking into the plush pillows and almost let out a moan at how good they felt. It was like laying on a cloud.

He didn’t get too much time to enjoy it though. You came back to your bedroom just a moment later.

At first you just stared at him. Then, tensely you said, “You must be the Spider-man.”

“Oy, it’s Spider-Punk!” He rebutted indignantly.

You just sniffed at that. “If you’re looking for dad, he’s not here.” You sat at your vanity, sliding off your heels as you spoke. “He’s off in Dubai with his new ‘work friend.’”

“Awfully calm right now, considering me. Your old man would have a right fit wouldn’t he?”

You scoffed bitterly, “He wouldn’t care. He never does.”

“’Bout me being here or ‘bout you?” You only lifted an eyebrow in response.

“I know you’re not here for nothing. What do you want?”

“Little birdie told me your Da’s been getting up to some shady business. Any chance you know somethin’ ‘bout that?”

“He never tells me anything. But…” You paused to light up a cigarette, “I know his office is downstairs in the library. He’s got it hidden behind a bookcase or something.”

“Right then. S’pose I should get going.” But he didn’t. Instead, he hesitated right at the door.

Hobie didn’t know why he paused at the doorway. He had already got what he wanted. Something about the weariness on your face, the melancholy, just made him think. He could have just chalked it up to the typical rich kid boredom, but he had reason to think there was more to it.

And when I snuck into your living room

And I wished that you would follow

At first you didn't but then you did

And it was already tomorrow

Hobie had left as soon as he had found the files on your dad’s computer; something about a deal going down that would provide the regime with newer tougher weapons. But then the next morning he went back to your house. It was stupid, he knew.

Last night you were feeling generous and there was no reason you would be that morning. But he snuck into your living room anyway in the hopes of… He didn’t actually know yet.

For a moment he just stood there on the plush white carpet. Hobie toed the edge with a spiked boot, turning over what he was going to say when you got there.

“You’re still here?” came a groggy voice. He whipped around to face the voice – his spider-sense hadn’t gone off at all – to find you at the top of the stairs, disheveled and wiping crust from your eyes.

“…Figured I should give you a heads up.”

“Heads-up? About what?”

“Your old man’s got a big deal going down. Some new weapons he’s handing over to the Kingpin.” And to the regime, but it’s not like you would care about the resistance��s plight, would you?

“Oh… I guess your friends would be in trouble then. The resistance or whatever you call it.” He stood corrected. “But what am I supposed to? He wouldn’t listen to me if I told him to stop.”

“He might not. But that doesn’t mean there’s no way for you to help.”

“You mean… You want me to spy?”

“More like be my mate on the inside, yeah?”

“...That’s all?”

“That’s all. Think about it.” Hobie turned to leave, perching on the window sill.

“Wait!” He looked back at you, an apprehensive look on your face “Do you mean mate as in… friends?”

Hobie only nodded in response.

This was the first of many meetings between the two of you.

When Hobie had finally smoked the last of the blunt, and you had gotten up to take a shower, he found himself posed with a question. Should he stay this time or leave like he always does.

He takes one of his bracelets and spins around in his fingers as he ponders, turning it this way and that as he ponders. As he did, you came out the shower wrapped in a light pink bathrobe – he remembered telling you that it looked good on you – and sat next to him quietly.

“I’m leaving for New York soon.” You said suddenly, your voice like a bucket of ice water dumped over his head.

“What? When?” Hobie didn’t try to hide his shock; there had been no indication that things between you two would change, this weird relationship you had.

“A week, I think. Kingpin hasn’t been too happy with my dad lately. Dad’s moving us there to try and fix things with him.”

“But why bring you with him? Can’t you just stay here?”

“You know why I can’t do that, Hobie.”

He slid a hand down his face. What was he meant to do now? This relationship between you two… You weren’t lovers, but you weren’t friends either, and you certainly weren’t friends with benefits. What the two of you had was unique. Hobie had never felt the way he felt about you with anyone else.

“…Are you going to stay?”

Silence.

“Are you going to stay? Just this once Hobie?”

He said nothing. He should have said something.

You got up silently and disappeared into the hallway.

“…I’ll meet you there. I swear I will,” Hobie said, a quiet declaration to himself.

If I ever make it to New York

Three years. It took three years for Hobie Brown to make good on his promise. Three years of thinking, of fighting, of wondering of the point of him even coming to see you.

He had left you a pager that last night before you left for New York, something to at least let you know he was still alive. He had sent a message every week religiously, like he was going to Mass. You never responded, but the messages always went through.

He had thought early on that seeing you again would never happen – that it wasn’t meant to happen. There had been so many reasons for him to not make good on it: he had people back home relying on him, that whole thing with the Spider-Society, and of course there was the possibility that you just wouldn’t want to see him again.

Peter B had convinced him otherwise. Handed him a bouquet and a ticket and said, “You know what to do, Hobie.”

So, he went. Now here he stood, right before the house you had told him you would be living in before you left. He felt like a kid again, like he had asked you on his first date or something. Maybe he might get to do just that. Take you out on a real date, instead of slinking around with you.

With a deep breath, he raised a hand and knocked – once, twice, thrice.

You opened it.

Hobie spoke. “You, er, wanna try this again? Actual date this time?”

You took the flowers from his hand, inhaled their scent deeply, then looked up at him through thick lashes.

“I’d love to.”

The Goddamn Copacabana Essay

Ok so does anyone remember when Copacabana randomly got popular this year? Well for me that's when this mess started. I saw on instagram this one edit. It's not important, but it's how I became curious bc Barry can sing man, and tell a good story. Also it showed up really high on my wrapped so I think now is a funny time to talk about it.

Song History

So while people were treating it like a meme, I decided to study this song. Obviously, it released in 1977 and it was at a good time with disco music, etc. etc. What the average zoomer like me might not know is that there was a made for TV movie released in 1985.

This is cool and a good thing for a few reasons. Firstly, Barry Manilow, y'know, the guy who made this song, plays the protagonist, the Tony if you will. There are numerous versions of Copacabana, there's an 80's mix that I especially like that shows up in the movie. The plot is like, that song but extended, like it shows how Tony and Lola meet and fall in love, how Rico gets tangled in there, etc. I will say as the only spoiler, they do cut away from the uh shooting which kinda sucks bc I was really curious if Barry would answer that question. The only issue is that this movie is close to lost media, like I watched it once on a very sketchy website that probably got my data or something. It sucks because I genuinely liked it and I missed my chance in August to personally ask Mr. Manilow to get it on streaming for everyone. I got this gif as a consolation prize tho of Lola.

It also got turned into a musical in 1992 that follows the story of the TV movie, which I still want to find a bootleg of because that sounds like a good watch. Yes I listened to Manilow sing it now, and I'm not adding it to my Every Single Version of Copacabana playlist for peace and mankind reasons. So yeah aside from tikton picking it up, I think I covered everything---

Location History

Oh you thought Copacabana was fake? A place dreamed up by a disco artist in the '70's? Absolutely not. While the whole murder thing from what I could glean is not based on a real event, there was a real Copacabana, and for a time showgirls did perform there.

It's been closed and reopened several times, but it first opened on November 10th, 1940. When it first opened, it was run by Monte Proser, but it was also in partnership with Frank Costello, a mob boss. Monte Proser was well connected though, as he was a press agent for the likes of Walt Disney, and a bunch of people I personally don't recognize. Anyways, Frank put one of his guys to be there to protect mob interests, Jules Podell. Jules had a police record though, and the club got investigated for racketeering and tax evasion in 1944. By 1948 though, the pressure went down, and it was basically mob controlled with Jules being the sole owner.

I did have a couple things I wanted to shoehorn in, so lemme talk about them quickly. First off, the vibes were kinda wack because it's y'know Brazilian decor and Latin American music, costume, and dance, so someone might guess Tex-Mex because white people run the place. Nope, Chinese food. Secondly, the place was racially segregated until the '50's. I'm not surprised by given it's pre-segregation, but I am a little disappointed. However, many black performers did really well there, like Harry Belafonte, Sammy Davis Jr., Sam Cooke, and The Supremes debuted there.

Like I said, it moved a few times and closed and reopened a few more times than that. You can visit the club now, and it seems like the original salsa theme is still going. But that's less fun. I've been saving the best for last.

Showgirl History

I should start by being honest in that, this part isn't finished yet. Well, not in the way I consider finished. I want to interview show girls from the 50's specifically so I can truly hear thier experiences from the club at the time. Or if you're a descendant of one and you remember her talking about that time in her life, that also is good. If you have any contact info you are okay with sharing, please message me.

From what I can glean, all girls were hand selected by Jack Entratter, the show producer for the Copacabana and basically the guy who invented the Vegas showgirl later on. He also knew Frank Sinatra from this time period, which is a fun sidenote. The girls he chose also had, and I will say, I do think this is a little creepy, a formula. The formula is simple, "5’4” in height; 116 lbs. Bust 32-34, waist 24, hips 34. Face: small features, the American girl look, oval rather than round face." He didn't care if the girl could dance at all, simply if she was beautiful similar to Ziegfield's French shows of the '20's. The Copa Show didn't necessarily have hard steps, as the focus was on the beauty of the showgirl and her costume.

The costumes of course, were often very elaborate and told the story. I have heard good things, the pay was good, and from what little online prescence the NYC Copa Girls have, it seems happy, if a little nerve wracked. The pictures I've found are very pretty, so I bet it was fun.

I'm honestly not sure how to end this except to say this was a journey, and I hope if you take anything away it's that real people worked and laughed there, and sometimes art imitates life, not perfectly, but it does imitate it. Oh and if this ever leaves Tumblr and reaches Barry, I'm begging you to put the made for TV movie on streaming or something I beg of you.

UMK 2024 Song Review - Windows95man

The hype is very real around Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu (UMK), the Finnish national selection for Eurovision and the race to Malmö continues with another entry!

Windows95man - No Rules!

Windows95man is a shy family man from the Finnish capital area who's made a name for himself as multitalented entertainer. The man is a visual artist and a photographer plus owns his own gallery in Helsinki but is the best known aka Windows95man. It all started from Youtube but quickly grew to become famous as a DJ who wears cut off shorts (magic shorts according to him) and Windows95 t-shirt.

He represents the same liberated crazy spirit as Käärijä last year. He does a lot of things that are not seen suitable for a Finnish man of his age in style and in music and feels no shame of doing so! Good for him!

No Rules is his first song in which he collaborates with Henri Piispanen who delivers the vocals.

No rules is a throwback from the 90's which according to Windows95man influenced his musical style the most (as born in the mid 80's). Musically this is part of the eurodance genre and reminds many of E-Type.

Musically it holds all the necessary elements that a proper 90's banger needs and Piispanen impresses with his high notes (can he deliver live?). However, what is a strong point for No Rules can be also its death.

This is a nice, funny, catchy add to UMK24 selection but doesn't really meet the high quality of the previous songs, does it. This can be seen as a joke entry especially with the music video which reminds me a sketch on TV. Musically this can be quite irritating for many. It doesn't offer anything new and some listeners might tune off before the song has reached its 3-minute run.

Last year Portion Boys delivered a similar entry but still bringing their own musical value to the table. I just don't see No Rules doing the same despite of possibly becoming a guilty pleasure for some UMK fans. In Eurovision this is something what we could have sent a decade ago but now UMK as Eurovision has topped its game since. Wiwibloggs were on point with their a Nokia reference - it's nice to down a memory lane for a moment but would someone still buy one? No.

This is still a decent first single and I hope nothing but the best and love in the future!

Aww hiii!! <3 Not gonna lie, it's not something I ever really thought about so I had to look all the songs up and listen to them again LMAO. Funny enough, I'm not super into the music style of anime themes because my ears grew up being trained on American pop music, and the melodies/general flow of a lot of anime soundtracks don't quite match the ones I like/I'm used to hearing. When I watch an anime, I'll listen any new opening/ending song once and if I don't like it, I just skip over it whenever it comes on (happens more often than not) 🙂‍↔️

It's quite rare that I enjoy >80% of an anime theme and I'm actually really picky about the ones I save into my library. Thus, I don't have that many (my weeb playlist is only 2 hours long! I know a lot of people who have at least 10 hours of anime shit in their playlists lol). A lot of the songs in my playlist are actually not openings or endings, but random soundtracks within the shows (e.g. character themes like in Demon Slayer, or MHA has a lot of random repeated songs for different kinds of scenes. And how could I forget AOT [Hiroyuki Sawano the goat]). Yeah so no OP/EDs in my library normally (for MHA at least), BUT sometimes I'll add some of the instrumentals of the songs, (i.e. no voices) because I felt like the singing ruined a good composition lmao jjk S2 OP 1 and S2 ED 2 idk I think I'm in the minority when I say that for music, sound is more important to me than lyrics

The part in the actual theme in the show where All Might's bright aura fades into Endeavor's dark one is such a chilling contrast ugh.,.,,. I ate that shit up

Dakara, Hitori ja Nai (S2 ED 1): I think the translation of this is something like "you're not alone" or something, which 🥺. Anyway, the most sonically pleasing song in the entire MHA production okay I don't make the rules. The harmonies are beautiful!! And the fact that this ending was focused on the girlie pops I was like yes yes yessss queens all around slayyyy

Rokutousei (S7 ED 2): translation - "6" something..,., the most recent one!! I was so surprised when I first listened, I was suspicious of how much I was liking it and I was low key waiting for a part of the song where the melody doesn't go the way I expect and I end up hating it (S5 ED 2) but it never happened. I never skip this one when watching the show. It's a beautiful song in the way that it's like slightly melancholic but also hopeful at the same time? Even without understanding the lyrics those are the vibes I get when I listen (and see the visuals, maybe that's where I'm getting this from lmao). It honestly puts me on the verge of tears sometimes. Especially the ending where they showed Shoto/Toya!! instead of the normal Deku/Shigaraki. Anyway I have the full song saved in my library and it was even on repeat a couple weeks ago! Ochaco on the album cover is so cute

Shout Baby (S4 ED 2): also super happy and catchy and bright. And everyone's bb pics!! 🥺 I would almost never skip this theme.

Uso ja Nai (S5 ED 2): translation - "not a lie"? honorable mention cause I enjoyed the first 30ish secs of the song with the piano before it falls off (basically just the first verse) and I love bb hawks

Somewhat unrelated but in doing some of my research for this ask, I found out that Sayuri, the singer who did the ending of S4 (the one that was focused on Eri), passed away last month at 28 years old :( rip. Her song was the only one from S4 that didn't make it on this list cause I didn't love it, but she was so young. at least her legacy lives on through her music.

I'm sad so here's some music headcanons for Destiny 2 characters, assuming music remained intact since the pre-Golden Age:

- Cayde: ofc I'm starting with him. I feel like he'd listen to a bit of everything to be honest (I'm projecting so hard rn), but most of the content of his playlists would be "european childhood" songs (idk what else to call them), 80's music and white girl music. My boy would absolutely kill it at an ABBA karaoke night. He knows every single move to the Just Dance Rasputin dance (he learnt when he was a human, but don't tell him that. He likes to think he came up with it), which only fueled Andal's jokes about him being Rasputin (the warmind, not the dude). Oh and he listens to Hozier when he's Feeling™.

- Eris: my favorite goth. However, i feel like she'd mainly go for the loud stuff, to drown The Voices™. Real loud. Like, Deep Purple loud. Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath are on the list as well, she likes to vary. As for the goth, perhaps some Nine Inch Nails. The Cure, definitely. She really likes how russian songs sound. Saint thinks she's weird.

- Ikora: other than the occasional heavy metal music sesh with her gf (she specifically enjoys Metallica), she's really into lofi. I know, i know. Polar opposites. But she's stressed, ok? She also wouldn't say no to some bedroom pop/alternative/indie. I can picture her listening to Rex Orange County.

- Zavala: Zuzuvela! Classical music, who would've guessed. A bit cliche, i know, but hear me out. I like to think man's learned to play the piano when living with Safiyah, and used to play Für Elise for her. He still plays it now when he's feeling down. Are you crying yet? I am. Anyways, we all know he listens to Shaxx's tapes as well.

- Amanda: everything about her screams rap to me. But like, all rap. From Eminem to Tupac to Nicki Minaj to Kendrick Lamar. Imma throw Tyler, The Creator and Childish Gambino in as well because that's my personal Holy Trinity. Kendrick, Gambino and Tyler. In that order, iykwim.

- Crow: now this guy, he's the definition of "a bit of everything". Hozier. Soooo much Hozier in this guy's wrapped. If you look closely you might spot some Will Wood and Mitski. Oh and, ofc, the queens as well: Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Britney Spears, etc. Now that i think about it, he would make a great Y2K girl, but that's between me and God.

To start us off strong, the man, the myth, the music kickin Hashira himself;

Tengen Uzui🎵🎶

- Without a doubt, Tengen Uzui is a Mötley Crüe diehard. He SCREAMS the song ‘Girls, Girls, Girls.’ Much to the disapproval of Hina, Maiko, and Suma. But other than being a CrüeHead, I feel like he would also be way into bands like Warrant and Quiet Riot.

Next up is our favorite annoyed lover boy;

Iguro Obanai🐍

- While I thoroughly believe that Obanai would be a music elitist, I could see him getting in his feels to the song ‘Waiting for a girl like you.’ By Foreigner. Additionally, he would for sure relate to the song ‘Faithfully’ by Journey. Forever longing for his lovely Love Hashira and silently confessing his undying loyalty to her when no one else is around.

Moving on from lover boy, why don’t we take a gander at Lover Girl;

Mitsuri Kanroji💖🍡

- Mitsuri is definitely into big 80’s power ballads. I’m talking ‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn’ by Poison big. But I also see her jamming to songs like ‘Edge of a Broken Heart’ by Vixen and ‘Hit Me With Your Best Shot’ by Pat Benatar. She’s got a history with love and heartbreak that would make anyone sympathetic to her and I feel like she would really find solace in songs that told stories of heartbreak.

From someone who has a history with love, to someone who’s got a history of poisons. For our next candidate we have the woman Kesha wrote ‘Toxic’ about;

- Shinobu, my dear!! Oh I could see her absolutely kicking it to some Joan Jett. ‘Bad reputation’? Hell yeah! ‘I love Rock n Roll’? Hell yeah she does. But other than Joan Jett, I see one of her FAVORITE songs being ‘Bad Medicine’ by Bon Jovi. She probably listens to it while making her elixirs or discovering new medicine and honestly I love that for her.

Moving on from Shinobu, why don’t we take a look at the Hashira who took the world by their heart in less than an hour;

Kyojuro Rengoku❤️‍🔥

- Listen, Rengoku is a fire boy through and through, so I feel like his number one jam would be ‘Fire Woman’ by The Cult! And he would also absolutely adore the song ‘Heaven’s On Fire.’ by Kiss!!

Fire. Water. Two total opposites, just like their Hashira’s favorite 80’s song;

Giyuu Tomioka🌊

- I’m so sorry but I could not see Giyuu listening to upbeat songs from G’n’R or Mötley. My boy is just not that way. I actually see him listening to slower songs that have a little bit of kick. I also feel like his music is a reflection of how he feels about his relationships. So I believe one of his top songs would be ‘Nobody’s Fool’ by Cinderella. He truly is nobody’s fool and he is a lot more perceptive than people give him credit for!!!

His emotions remained tucked away just like him, but so are another water based Hashira’s emotions. The kiddo that gives us all misty eyes;

Muichiro Tokito☁️

- My boy Tokito has been through trials and tribulations on his road to becoming a Hashira, and after regaining his memories in full, I believe the guilt of loosing his brother would stick in with him. So I believe Tokito’s favorite song would be ‘Running Up That Hill(A Deal With God)’ by Kate Bush. He chooses to live for his brother but I feel as though there’s a part of him that wishes his brother was the lucky one. (Also that song could count for so many people. But I really think it hit him differently.)

From Hashira who tuck their emotions away, to Hashira who show their emotions a little too aggressively. Give it up for the man who can and will sweep you away;

Sanemi Shinazugawa🍃🎐

- Oh, Sanemi, my darling. Violent in actions, deeply lonely in mind. I believe our boy Sanemi wouldn’t be one to listen to music for fun, his music Is his way of finding people who relate to him without being outwardly vulnerable. He wants connection, but he chooses to find it trough ballads and songs that remind him of the home he so desperately misses. He finds solace in songs such as ‘Home Sweet Home’ by Mötley Crüe, ‘Coming Home’ by Cinderella, and ‘Something to Believe In’ by Poison. Songs from people who were astronomically different from him, and yet they all sang of Greif or wishing to return to a home that wouldn’t be truly theirs again. And for once, while listening, Sanemi felt seen.

The wind that sweeps you off your feet, that rustles your clothing, the ever moving force around us. So different from our last Hashira, steady as stone and built with a heart of pure gold. Our Stone Hashira;

Gyomei Himejima🪨

- Now I know a lot of people are like, “Gyomei??? Rock n Roll?! HA! Not that one.” But I raise you, Gyome Himejima’s favorite songs; ‘Sister Christian’ by Night Ranger and ‘Here I Go Again’ by Whitesnake!!
