documenting Larry and Archibald’s relationship in every episode (1990′s)

Episode 1: “Where’s God When I’m S-Scared” (1993) - in the first-ever Silly Songs with Larry, Archibald interrupts Larry’s water buffalo song because it’s “too silly” and gets very passionate and up in his face about it. imo I think Archibald just can’t handle his feelings for this silly little cucumber and that’s his way of dealing with it. 

- Larry and Archibald star alongside each other in Daniel and the Lion’s Den, where Larry plays Daniel and Archibald plays King Darius. King Darius is very fond of Daniel and proudly promotes him to be his husband second in command. King Daniel also expresses deep concern for Daniel after he is thrown into the lion’s den. I know they are both playing roles here but I don’t think the acting was that hard imo I really think this was the beginning of their relationship. 

Episode 2: “God Wants Me to Forgive Them” (1994) - this episode was kinda bad and really hard to watch but here we go - Bob and Larry recall that one summer (many years ago, clearly before the first episode took place) when they owned a boat and gave people tours. Archibald (who was apparently a millionaire) was on the tour along with his wife (we’ll talk about that later). Larry crashes the boat because he’s gay and can’t drive and Archibald’s wife complains that it ruined their vacation (possibly honeymoon??). Everyone eventually forgives Larry, and Archibald is the first to claim “we still like you Larry”. - I’m pretty sure Archibald and his wife are now divorced because we never really see her in any other episodes. I think that’s also why Archibald is no longer a millionaire. 

Episode 3: “Are You My Neighbor?” (1995) - In The Story of Flibber-o-loo, Larry gets shoved into the sand by the scallions. The mayor (Archibald) walks by with the doctor (Archibald’s ex-wife) and instead of stopping to help Larry they SING AND DANCE WITH EACH OTHER!? the drama!!!  - this whole episode just really drives home the point of “God made everyone special” and “love your neighbor, even if they are different” so uh. yeah there’s that

Episode 4: “Rack, Shack, & Benny” (1995) - Archibald is not in this one but Larry is very silly and gay and it’s a great episode just in general

Episode 5: “Dave and the Giant Pickle” (1996) - In Silly Songs with Larry, Archibald plays the role of Larry’s therapist while Larry sings about his lips 

Episode 6: “The Toy that Saved Christmas” (1996)  - cute Christmas episode but nothing gay happens, moving on 

Episode 7: “Silly Sing-Along” (1997)  - just a sing-along of all the songs that have happened in episodes up to this point. while we don’t really establish any new relationships here I have a feeling it might set the stage for episode 11 (we’ll talk about that later)

Episode 8: “Larryboy! & the Fib from Outer Space!” (1997) - this is the first time we see Archibald playing the role of Larry’s butler, Alfred, but it’s never really established why Larry even has a butler in the first place. I mean is Larry even rich? I think it makes sense for Larryboy to have a behind-the-scenes assistant when he’s being a superhero, but a full-time, live-in butler? Personally I think it’s just a cover up for the fact that they are literally just living together. There is even a scene where Larry and Alfred are sitting next to each other on the couch playing Candy Land. Who plays board games with their butler? While sitting next to them? On the couch? - Alfred and Larry share their first fight as a couple in this episode, when Larry is supposed to be out looking for space aliens and he can’t find any and wants to give up and come home. Alfred insists there are aliens and Larry must keep looking to protect Bumblyburg, but Larry doesn’t listen and comes home  - Of course the aliens attack, so Larry goes out to fight the alien only to find that Alfred has tricked out his ride “in his spare time” (a labor of love)  - Alfred accidentally pulls the plug out of his computer, cutting off communication between him and Larry right before Larry is about to be eaten by the alien. Alfred becomes very emotional, screaming at his computer to reboot, but the information loads just in time to save Larry  

Episode 9: “Josh and the Big Wall!” (1997) - Archibald once again interrupts Silly Songs with Larry, this time to criticize Larry’s cebu song because apparently a good old fashioned projector slideshow is not enough of a “multimedia event”. Larry is used to Archibald’s antics at this point because they live together now, ignores his interrogations, and continues the show.  - Larry plays the role of Josh, and Archibald plays a commander of the Lord’s army who appears to Josh in the middle of the night. Josh falls facedown in front of the angel. There are definitely some...expressions exchanged here I mean wow like I know they are supposed to be acting in this one but again I think some of those expressions were genuine  - my headcannon for this episode is also that it was performed/filmed “live.” In the beginning of the episode, Junior Asparagus helps Bob introduce the show because Larry was “tired” from the last show and they were letting him sleep in. But instead of saying “roll film,” Bob tells Junior to close his eyes and use his imagination and I think this is when they bring in the set and perform it like a play. So the expressions exchanged between Larry and Archibald are seen in real time, and Larry’s reaction to Archibald is genuine because he is actually seeing him dressed in armor, literally shining from the stage lighting instead of a special effect being added later for video. I also like to imagine that they didn’t have a dress rehearsal so they were both seeing each other in full costume/lighting for the first time.

Episode 10: “Madame Blueberry” (1998)  - oh shit y’all, this is where it happens! SILLY SONGS WITH LARRY IS CANCELLED!! I am so glad I watched every episode in order because the tension, the DRAMA, everything leading up to this moment!!!  - Larry is literally all dressed up, set ready and everything when Archibald interrupts his segment, letting him know *in front of everyone* that it has been cancelled, in part due to what happened last time. Archibald even leaves poor Larry in a freaking bear trap for crying out loud, replacing his segment with Love Songs with Mr. Lunt which has some serious 80′s vibes

Episode 11: “Silly Sing-Along 2: The End of Silliness?” (1998) - alright here we go folks the climax of the season  - the episode opens with Larry sitting at a diner during a storm, having nightmares recalling Archibald’s criticism of Larry’s cebu song and cancellation of Silly Songs with Larry. The server notices Larry crying and asks him what’s the matter. Larry replays the cebu song on the jukebox and then cries about it to the server. - Archibald enters wearing a trenchcoat that hides his face and carrying a briefcase. He is followed by his ex-wife. Archibald turns around, keeping his face hidden, and sees Larry crying but Larry does not notice him.  - the server, unable to cheer Larry up, asks him again what’s wrong and Archibald finally reveals himself. Archibald and Larry share some very dramatic looks. Archibald plays the clip of him cancelling Silly Songs with Larry, followed by Love Songs with Mr. Lunt. - Archibald admits fault for Larry’s disposition while also trying to explain himself. He then reveals what’s in the briefcase: a petition from Larry’s fans to bring back Silly Songs with Larry. Archibald, overcome with feelings for Larry, hops up onto the counter to passionately declare his feelings reinstate Silly Songs with Larry. Once again the expressions exchanged between these two are just priceless. 

Episode 12: “Larryboy and the Rumor Weed” (1999)  - In the season finale of the millennium, Larry and Archibald are now back together, as Archibald once again plays Larryboy’s husband “live-in butler,” Alfred. But the drama is not over yet!  - After Larryboy defeats a bandit, Larry invites Alfred out on a date for pizza to celebrate. Alfred says he would love to, but politely declines as he will be volunteering at the local elementary school the following morning. Larry smiles wistfully at the thought of his husband helping out at the school and they share a tender exchange of “goodnights”.  - The evil rumor weed overhears this exchange and becomes jealous of their gay happiness and decides to start a rumor that Alfred is a dangerous homosexual robot - Larry and Alfred, blissfully unaware of this rumor, are seen gardening together the following morning. When they find out about the weeds (still unaware of the rumor), Alfred is very excited to help Larry because it involves gardening. You can also see some drawings of the background of their house and one of them is a rainbow.  - Larryboy goes underground to fight the mother weed and loses contact with Alfred. They both freak out and Alfred goes to save his husband on his gay little European scooter.  - Alfred is attacked by an angry mob because he’s a dangerous homosexual robot and seized by the rumor weed, who then turns into a flower after the townspeople decide he is not dangerous, but actually a nice man. Larryboy crawls out of the sewer and reunites with his love for all to see.

Of course he was here, you really shouldn’t have been surprised. 

Roman had a tendency to worm his way back into your life, physically or mentally, one way or another. It’s like he knew when you were finally moving on, when you had finally pushed him from your consciousness, and decided that that was unacceptable. 

You let out a heavy sigh as you watched him enter the house party, a perky blonde slung comfortably under his arm. The mummers had started then, people whispering and peeking over at him and his date. Just because this party was outside Hemlock Grove city limits didn’t mean that Roman’s name didn’t have any lore or pull to it. You were sure everyone in the state, hell maybe the country, would stop what they were doing to follow him through a room. He had an incredibly commanding presence, something that you once loved, but now just resented. 

“Is that Roman Godfrey?” the guy you had been chatting up asked. 

He was good looking, this random man. Charming, always willing to refill your cup or dance when a song you liked came on. He laughed at your jokes and kept his eyes from wandering to any of the other girls that were in attendance, which was silly, but something you appreciated. You’d only met him a couple of hours ago, so any singular devotion he had to you was quite flattering. You were seriously considering taking his hand and asking him to join you in a room upstairs until Roman showed up and decided to steal his attention from you. This guy, this stupid guy who was the only guy in the party who you’d been attracted to even in the slightest, of course he would have a hard on for Roman and his family name. 

“Who?” you asked with resentment, drinking more of the swilly beer in your cup. 

“Who? Roman Godfrey? His family owns half the state! He’s like, a billionaire. How in the hell do you not know who he is?” he talks like an animated puppy about Roman, you can see as his eyes follow the taller man everywhere he goes in the room. 

You refused to look at Roman yourself, you just stared up at your date (if you could even call him that). You focused on the bumping music as he continued to gush about Godfrey Industries and Roman’s family money. God, you bet this guy talked about Elon Musk like this too… and suddenly you felt so repulsed by him that your skin crawled at the thought of him touching you. 

“You know what?” you cut him off from his rant, “I’m going to go out for a cigarette.” 

“Oh, OK. Want me to come?” He asked.

“No, not particularly.” And you were sure he was scowling after you and calling you a bitch, but you didn’t care. You needed to get away from him, his Roman complex, and all other Roman related things. 

You pushed your way through the throngs of people in the house to the back sliding door, where you exited to the pleasant gust of chilled air. It was a welcomed contrast on your skin after simmering inside with all it’s muggy body heat. 

The house that was throwing the party was really nice, nicer than any house you’d be able to afford. There was a large inground pool, complete with water features and a conjoined hot tub; an outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven and fully stocked fridge; and some of the most beautiful landscaping you’d ever seen. It made you wonder who actually lived here. One of your coworkers had invited you along, and you had only shown up to have something to do on a Friday night. You saw her for around five minutes when you arrived, then you’d both disappeared into the sea of people. 

You went over to the kitchen and took a seat on one of the built in benches. It was carved into the brick next to the pizza oven, and even though the oven was off, you could still feel some heat emanating from it. You pulled your knees to your chest and settled against the brick, temple to the oven as you enjoyed the silence the night had to offer. You took out your phone from your jeans and began to app surf, switching between social medias to keep your mind busy. 

“Now, what’s a pretty little thing like you doing out here, all by her lonesome?” you could see the smarmy grin on his face without even looking up. 

A part of you had futilely hoped that escaping outside would have thrown Roman off your scent. You’d up and completely left parties when he had arrived in the past, so you hoped he would have assumed that was the case tonight. But then again if he had, he wouldn’t be Roman. Because he seemed to have a tracking device on you, always aware of your whereabouts. It used to be helpful, but now it just pissed you off. 

“You’re such a little stalker, you know that right?” you sneer, refusing to look up from your phone. 

“Pretty sure you’re the stalker, (Y/L/N). Somehow wherever I go,” He trails off as he came to sit next to you, far too close for comfort, “There you are.” 

“Whatever, Roman.” you reply, eyes still glued to your phone as you huddled closer to the oven. 

“What? No snarky retort? No adamant denial? Man, someone’s gone soft,” he chuckles. 

“Or maybe I’m just sick of this little game you’ve roped me into,” you bit back, and you could see in your periphery that his smile grew. 

“You love it.” 

“No, you love it. It’s why you never fucking leave me alone.” 

He scoffs, but doesn’t say anything else. There is a long beat of silence where the two of you just listen to each other's breaths, of the sound of the others clothing scraping against the brick and the sound of your deft fingers against your screen. 

It reminded you of when you were together, of when you had been the perky girl under his arm and the one enthralled by his presence. It reminded you of the late nights he’d shatter your body with pleasure and put you back together again. It reminded you of the times that he'd lay on your chest and murmur secrets and confessions with tears streaking his alabaster cheeks. It reminded you of the ever present smile he brought out in you. 

It reminded you of Roman’s refusal to admit any true feelings for you. It reminded you of tense silence after fights. It reminded you of how he broke your heart. 

“That guy you were talking to? Tried to shake my hand,” Roman chuckles, “Fucking freak.” 

“Yeah, that’s why I ditched him. He probably liked you more than you like you.” 

Roman snorts, “He was practically humping my leg.” 

“Yeah, well he was practically humping mine before you showed up. So thanks for that.” you said bitterly, finally pocketing your phone and looking out over the groomed backyard. 

“He wouldn’t have known what to do with a woman like you.” 

“I would have liked to figure that out on my own upstairs, thank you very much.” you cross your arms over your folded knees. 

“C’mon, that guy? I could smell his drug store cologne from a mile away, and that fucking geled hair? You chose that guy?” you could easily detect the envy in his voice.

“C’mon, that girl? With fake tits up to her chin and boxed dyed roots?” you shot back fast, and then immediately cursed yourself. 

Because you had just played into his game, the one you had been trying for the past few months to eject yourself from. 

“She’s hot, isn’t she?” he drawls, leaning back against the bench. 

“If you’re into that 80’s fake Sports Illustrated look.” 

“She fucks like she’s straight out of Hustler.” 

“Thanks for oversharing, Roman. Though that information feels a little more suited for Peter than me.” you said sarcastically, hoping with every passing second that he would get the hint and leave you alone. 

But he never did. Not tonight, not last time and you were sure he never would. 

“You used to love when I overshared. You said it made you feel closer to me,” he nudged you with his shoulder and you felt sick. 

Because yes, you had said that. You had loved when he told you everything. When he didn’t hold back on his thoughts and feelings, and told you things that were sometimes so ugly he’d retch. 

“You’re such a dick,” you swore, and finally stood to escape him.

“Oh, don’t be like that! Sit back down.” Roman reached out to take a hold of your wrist, but you flinched away at his touch. 

“Leave me alone.” 

“Sit back down and maybe I’ll think about it,” he laughs while trying to grab you again. 

“How long are you going to do this to me, Roman? How much longer are you going to torment me!” you snap.

You look down at him for the first time all night. You had been avoiding direct eye contact since he followed you outside, afraid of what those sinful green eyes could get you to do. You’d backslid with Roman one to many times because of those fucking eyes. 

“Torment you? That seems a bit rash,” he scoffs. 

“I don’t think it is, I actually think it lets you off too easy.” 

“Yeah?” he replies, fully condescending and pompous. 

“Yeah,” you clench your jaw, “because it’s like you’re haunting me, it's like you’re this looming force that will never let me move on. And for the life of me Roman, I can’t fucking figure out why. Is it just to torture me for leaving? Are you that much of a spoiled brat? That once the toy you didn’t want gets thrown out you through a tantrum until it’s back?” 

“Fuck you.”

“No, fuck you! I’m so sick of this, Roman. I’m sick of being at a party or a restaurant or a coffee shop and then having you appear out of thin air to remind me of how much it all just hurts. Do you even care? Do you even care that everytime I see you it takes off a year of my life from pure grief?” 

Because it did. Everytime you spotted him in line behind you, at a table across the room or drinking at a bar you were sat at, you felt awful. You felt so disgusting and used and dirty, because you let Roman take and take from you and when you asked for something in return he refused to give. 

“Am I not allowed to see a friend all of a sudden?” he asks, his tone becoming defensive and worried. 

“We’re not friends. We aren’t. I loved you and you spat in my face. I could never be friends with you again, Roman.”

Roman purses his lips and looks up at you under his brow before pushing up from the bench to stand, “You don’t love me anymore?” 

“It shouldn’t matter.” 

“It does. It does to me.” he steps closer to you with every word and you finally feel the effects of the alcohol you’d had earlier. 

“Well it doesn’t to me, and it shouldn’t to you either. It didn’t then.” 

It didn’t matter to him when he screamed and laughed in your face after your confession. 

Roman doesn’t respond, even though you can tell he wants to. He towers above you now, but you don’t cower under his height. 

You watch Roman chew on the inside of his cheek for a few moments before you know the conversation is over.

“I’m gonna go.” 

You turned back toward the house and started your trek across the grass. 

“Wait!” Roman suddenly called behind you. 

You didn’t want to turn, and maybe if you were stronger you would have kept walking. But you did and you weren’t. 

“What?” you ask with a frustrated sigh. 

“I do, y’know,” he says, his posture hunched and uncomfortable, “I mean, as much as I can feel that way about anyone.” 

“Love me?” you shot back, saying the words he was too cowardly too.

Roman looks around like he’s embarrassed, like he’s looking for any witnesses that might find out he has a heart. Then he nods gently. 

“As much as a person like me can. I don’t even know if I’m capable of... that’ing. To anyone.” 

You knew this is an incredibly vulnerable moment for Roman. You knew from experience that this was as close as he had ever been to uttering those sacreded three words, as close as he had ever felt to feeling them. You knew that this should give you some solace, some closure in your ongoing battle of emotions with the tall boy. You should feel better. But you don’t. 

Because it didn’t change the past, and only gave you worthless hope for some kind of future with the only man you’d ever loved.

“Ok.” was all you said in reply. 

And Roman just nods again, though it’s clear that wasn’t the response he was looking for. You almost expected him to say something else, but he doesn’t. He just takes out a cigarette and lights it.

“I, uh, I’m still going to leave,” you say, rubbing your biceps awkwardly under Roman’s intense gaze, “I only really came here to get laid and that fell through, so…” 

“Well, I could fix that, y’know?” Roman smirks before taking a drag, and suddenly any semblance of a moment being had was.

“I’ll pass,” you say and bid him a silent goodbye. 

You walk across the grass, short and such a vibrant green, even in the winter. You wonder if Roman liked the landscaping and the pool and the kitchen like you did. You wondered if things were different, if you two would live in a house like this. You tried not to think too much about it, though.

When you were almost to the house, you heard Roman call out for you again. 

You simply looked over your shoulder to see him leaning against a brick pillar, cigarette between his plush pink lips.

“I’ll see you soon.”

Worst to best night

Reader x Embry Call

(In this Jake never imprints on Nessie, he ends up imprinting on a girl his age named Callie)

Black mechanics had a busy day. Three customers showed up without calling in, and Jacob was livid. Hot sun beating down on the garage only made it ten times hotter inside. A quileute wolf's blood ran naturally warm without humidity blasting them. Garages usually stayed open for 8 hours in the area, but Jake was usually willing to work however long until he was exhausted.

Today was different. His sweet Callie was waiting for him and he had to miss seeing her. Jake's temper was slowly slipping out of grasp. Quil and Embry, hired as mechanics, noticed his anger and were giving eachother annoyed looks as Jake kept snapping at them.

To progress, each man worked on a different vehicle. Embry and Quil liked to joke around while they worked, but this day Jake was not a fan. Embry smiled as Quil tripped over a wire. The two shared a look and busted out laughing. Jake rolled his eyes and bit his tongue from saying anything.

"Quil, hand me the light dude." Jake said ten minutes later.

"I don't know where it is. Em had it last." Quil retorted, his long frame coming out from under the truck he had been working under. Motor oil smeared on his face as he rubbed it sheepishly from Jake's hard stare.

"It's a big fucking light, how do you not know where it is?" Jake stone voice pierced the air.

Embry rolled his eyes. Jake was being irritating. None of them were in a peachy mood and he wasn't making it any better. Hostile environments also weren't Embry's thing. He just wanted to defuse the situation.

"Here."

Jake nodded his head in acknowledgement as he took the light. Embry flipped him off when he wasn't looking before returning to his task. For a while work was carried out silently, only old 80's songs playing lightly could be heard. Although the atmosphere was calm, inside Jake wasn't. His veins were pulsating as he fumbled to still work. God, he wanted to be home. Bullshit, bullshit, bullshit.

Embry's imprint and wife, Y/N, and Callie pulled into the parking lot of the shop and parker up as close as she could to avoid getting drenched by the rain on her way in. La Push was rain 70% of the time. Either adapt or hate life.

Embry called his wife an hour earlier to tell her to not make dinner for him and Quil because they wouldn't be home for a long time. His tone held guilt and sorry as he explained it, but his lovely woman assured him that it was fine. Nothing to fret over.

Y/N was annoyed at whoever dropped off their vehicles without calling in because it set the boys back. Why the boys agreed to work on them was beyond her. Good men, the three of them were.

She knew that the mechanics wouldn't go get food if so much was left to do, so she bought Chinese food and decided to surprise them. Ordering 5 containers of general tsos, 3 containers of orange chicken and 4 boxes of fried rice was embarrassing, but she still did it out of love.

She called Callie to come with her because Jake was taking a tantrum about his soiled evening, and she wanted to put him in a better mood. Not only for his sake, but the guys too. Y/N didn't appreciate Jake's pissy attitude towards Embry and Quil, but she understood how wolves get antsy when they're away from their imprint for too long. Hell, she even got cranky when she didn't see Em for a while.

Together they grabbed the food, plates, cups and drinks and ran for the door. Before they could open it, Quil pulled it open and stepped aside.

"Ooh, ladies.." his eyes wandered across the bags and his nose picked up on the smell, "Yes! Ladies with food! It's as if you heard our grumbling stomachs. Have I ever said how much I love you guys?"

Y/N kissed his cheek as he took some of the bags from you to help, "love you too, kid."

Jake stood up and ran to Callie, kissing her face all over and spinning her around. The couple's intimate moment was alike every time a wolf saw their imprint after being apart. Y/N grinned, happy to have helped.

Embry wiped his hands off on a rag before coming to take the rest of the bags from Y/N while giving her a peck on the lips. She hummed in pure bliss at his close proximity. They set the food down on the back table and we're grabbing benches and random chairs to sit.

"You're my savior, like always. Missed you so much today." Embry whispered into Y/N's ear from behind as he wrapped his arms around her.

She laughed, body naturally melting back into him, "I missed you too, lover boy. C'mon, let's eat guys. You must be starved."

Five adults chewed, laughed, and talked happily as they enjoyed their well deserved dinner. The chemistry between the group was buzzing as they shared stories about how their day went.

"Jake was a dick all day. If it weren't for you guys showing up, we may have killed him." Quil exaggerated, winking at Embry.

"I was a dick. M' sorry about that, didn't mean to take it out on you guys because it wasn't fair. But God damn, how do people not have the common courtesy to not just drop their shit off?" Jake ranted, shaking his head in utter disbelief.

Callie patted his arm, "People are half wits, Jacob. Dealing with them comes with running a business," she turned to the boys with a beautiful smile on her cheerful face, "thank you for dealing with the grumpy guy all day."

"His anger was reasonable cuz we were frustrated too- I had been itching to get home to Y/N." Embry confessed, looking at his wife that was showing orange chicken in her mouth.

She caught his eyes and shrugged with a blush as she shoved the rest of it in, "good food.." she mumbled.

Embry chuckled, admiring how goofy the love of his life was. Y/N was just so refreshing to see after the shitty day he had and her showing up washed his bad attitude away. Now he was all smiles. They all were.

"Tomorrow I say we have a fun day at the beach and later have a fire or something. Relax and unwind a bit, yanno?" Quil brought up, his tongue poking out to lick the sauce at the side of his mouth. A chorus of yes came from the group.

Y/N wiped her face with the back of her hand before picking up her fortune cookie. Her nimble fingers tore off the wrapper. She cracked the cookie and took out the little slip of paper.

"A new love is around the corner. Open your heart and it shall arrive..." She read out loud. Her face looked deep in thought as she set it down. Embry grinned at the cliche fortune, pulling her close for a second to kiss her forehead.

"Lame. Your man is right there. Let's hope my fortune is better." Callie said, grabbing hers.

"Actually... It's kind of right. I was going to tell you in a more thought out way but now is good... Embry, I'm pregnant." Y/N softly said, her eyes staring deep into his.

Everyone's mouth dropped in surprise at the news. Embry quickly grabbed her face in his large hands and kissed her passionately, the warmth of his hands seeping into her skin. Callie, Jake, and Quil clapped as he pulled away and rested his forehead against hers for a moment. He smiled smittenly and shook his head, pulling her into his lap to hold her close.

"There goes my wine drinking buddy.." Callie teased, nudging Y/N's foot with hers.

"Got that right, Y/N will not be drinking. Or doing anything remotely dangerous." Embry sternly said, pulling her closer to him with a kiss to her hair.

Quil snorted, "This will be a fun 9 months of Y/N living in bubble wrap.."

"Uh huh" she protested. The group laughed as they all set into a comfortable silence. The couple would be the first out of the pack to have a kid, even before Sam and Emily.

"Happy for you man" Jake said with a nod of his head.

"Thanks Jake... Wow, this day really went from shit to one of the best days of my entire life." Embry beamed.

Rest of the evening was spent talking about potential baby names. Some silly ones were thrown out there, but it was nice to get ideas. Y/N and Embry shared a look and knew immediately that their baby would be loved by their aunts and uncles. But of course, not more than he or she was loved by their parents.

Yes, I have enjoyed my break, thanks for asking, but it’s time to get back to work.  While I was off, I had plenty of time to read through all of the wonderful questions you sent.  Well, actually, it was only one.  But, given my difficulties sometimes grasping with reality, I couldn’t be sure if it was the only one I got, or if there were more just coming from my head.  Turns out, I was mixing up the voices in my head with the radio.  So, to avoid any confusion, I’ve included all of them here in my version of (bow to David Letterman) viewer mail.  Here we go:

“Astrology. Do you believe there is something to it? I mean like real astrology - like Ptolemy, Cassini, and Nostradamus practiced - not the one-size-fits-all horoscope you find in the newspaper.” - anonymous

Great question.  I definitely agree that these silly newspaper horoscopes are a waste of time, but the notion that the stars and planets somehow dictate what happens to us here on Earth is not something that I dismiss.  The problem I have is how could anyone possibly figure that out.  I am a very analytical person, and I just can’t believe someone like Nostradamus could have had the tools and data available to him at that point in time to make any sort of informed conclusions.  Frankly, I think he was just throwing a lot of shit up against the wall and just seeing what sticks.  That being said, the vastness and grandeur of our universe certainly suggest that there are forces out there that could have a significant impact on our lives. Unfortunately, I’m a bit too cynical and/or agnostic to believe that anyone will ever be able to prove that, in my lifetime anyway.  I guess that relegates me back to the astrology section in the newspaper, but I pass right by it to the crossword puzzle anyway, so I guess I’ll just have to keep finding things out one day at a time for now.  But, I’m open to any foresight that can be given to me, with proof of course.

“What’s going on?” - Marvin G., Detroit, Michigan

Gee, Marvin, where do I begin?  It seems if you even take a couple of days off there is “shocking” news that has already been replaced with something even more unbelievable.  I think, however, that this most recent story of a certain lawyer who worked for a certain boss who made him pay certain porn stars and committed a bunch of laws in the process is going to stick.  I think what everyone has to remember, including our president, is that impeachment is a political process and not a legal one.  Whether he can be indicted for a crime, or even if one exists that can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt is irrelevant.  If the legislative branch feels from a political standpoint that the president needs to be removed due to his actions (or inaction) then they must proceed with impeachment proceedings.  If you look at impeachment processes in history, notably Andrew Johnson, Bill Clinton, and even Richard Nixon, what got them in trouble pales in comparison to what this guy looks to have done.  I happen to think that means this is going to be going on for a long time and well into the 2020 election cycle.  No matter which side you are on, this is going to be political theater at its highest level, so enjoy it if you are into that thing.

“Can you get to that?” - Mavis S., Chicago, Illinois

Personally speaking, Mavis, I can definitely get to impeachment proceedings commencing at some point in the next six-to-twelve months.  The question is where do they go once they start and do they ever leave the committee level?  Even if they do, it seems unlikely to me that things could move fast enough to the House voting for impeachment by the 2020 primaries.  Furthermore, a Senate trial with a conviction appears even further far-fetched given eighteen Republican senators would have to flip on their sitting president (remember that a 2/3 majority is needed to convict).  I’m actually okay with that scenario playing out as it allows a lot of probing and debate that hasn’t happened in the past two years and gives the voters in the next election much better information than they had last time.  I also think that it gives other Republicans cover to challenge a sitting president in the primaries, which hasn’t happened seriously since Ted Kennedy took on Jimmy Carter in 1980.  My prediction is that impeachment never really gets off the ground, but it damages Trump so badly that he never makes it out of his party’s primaries.  Of course, this could all change tomorrow with the next bombshell that drops, but for now that’s what I see happening.

“What’s the frequency, Kenneth?” - Michael S., Athens, Georgia

Thanks for the note, Michael.  The name’s Jim, actually.  Anyway, if you happen to be driving through the Chicago area, I’ll recommend two frequencies for you to try on your FM dial.  The first, of course, is 93.1 or WXRT.  It is the last true FM rock station left in Chicago that plays everything from blues to classic rock to 80′s new wave to 90′s grunge up to new music from today and everything in between.  The DJ’s are knowledgeable and stay out of the way of the music.  My favorite is Terri Hemmert on weekday mornings from 10:00 to 1:00.  Saturday mornings are also a can’t miss with the three-hour flashback show to a particular year in rock.  The other frequency to try is 88.7.  This one is fun because in the city it will be Loyola University’s WLUW, but as you drive out west (around Harlem on the Ike) it turns into Elmhurst College’s WRSE.  WLUW is the quirkier of the two as you may find an obscure Icelandic electronica song played right after Glen Campbell’s “Southern Nights”.  Nothing wrong with either song, but it helps to be in college and on drugs to enjoy those so close together and I am not in or on either.  As such, I’m more partial to WRSE as they focus on rock variety with the occasional surprise thrown in.  They actually remind me a lot of an amateur version of XRT in many ways.  Whichever you listen to, it’s fun to hear college kids learning their way and it makes me feel just a little hip that they let me tune in.

“How bad do you want it?” - Don H., Linden, Texas

You have no idea how bad I want it Mr. H.  We’ve been waiting over thirty years in this town for a football team with a real shot at winning the Super Bowl, and I think we have one here.  This defense is that good.  Plus, as well as the D played against the Rams, I thought seeing the running game going well was a really good sign.  We’ll still need Mitch to get it back after hurting his shoulder, but I don’t think the Bears have to ride his arm to the Super Bowl.  Now, to get there, they are going to have to win two road games, probably in New Orleans and L.A., but I really think they would have an outside chance at a run if the momentum carries from last week.  If they do get to the Super Bowl, I predict they dominate any team that represents the AFC as I think they are better than them all (including the Chiefs and the Pats who they should have beat a few weeks ago).  The best thing about this team is that they have a ton of young talent that still has a lot of upside, so even if a Super Bowl isn’t in the cards this year, the Bears are a team to be reckoned with for a while in the NFC.   But, first let’s take care of business and win the NFC North title at home over the Packers.  After so many years of misery, I can’t think of a better way for this team to make a statement that it is back and the rest of the league will be messing with them at their own peril for years to come.

“Who are you?” - Pete T., London, England

I get it, Pete, I know that I have no authority to really speak on any of these subjects, but I can’t help myself.  I just love to answer questions and was very grateful for the one question that came to me from a blog reader.  I also think I have done a service by answering some of these additional questions that you all have been singing about for years.  I mean, as far as I know, there never have been any real responses to questions like yours.  I know there are a lot more out there too, so I’m happy to do it again.  I will, so long as I can get some blog reader questions to go along with them.  You know, just so people don’t think I’m completely insane. So, Take a Chance and Read Some Crap readers, hit that question button and keep this going as I’m sure Bob M. (Could You Be Loved?), George H. (What is Life?), and Whitney H. (How Will I Know?) would love answers to their questions too.  Until then, I hope at least some of these answers have satisfied your nagging questions, but the job is never complete.  I think the tide has finally turned for the question and 2019 is going to be full of them.  It may get uncomfortable at times, and maybe even downright nasty, but that is part of life and we are never going to evolve without continuing to challenge those with power and always asking why.

Album Review by Bradley Christensen Justin Timberlake – The 20/20 Experience Record Label: RCA Release Date: March 15 2013

Justin Timberlake released his third (and subsequently fourth album, because he released it in two parts over the course of 2013) almost five years ago now, and that’s a crazy thing to think about, because I remember when the album came out. I had just gotten into JT around 2012, because I picked up 2006’s FutureSex / LoveSounds during the winter of that year, but I had no idea (no one else had an idea, either) that he was gearing up to release his first album in seven years, entitled The 20/20 Experience. If you don’t know, or remember, Justin Timberlake took a really long hiatus after FutureSex / LoveSounds to focus on a film career. He wasn’t in a lot of stuff, let alone great stuff, but he was in The Social Network, In Time, Friends With Benefits, and a few other movies here and there (he still acts, though, as he was in Trolls in 2016, as well as performing the theme song for the film, “Can’t Stop The Feeling”), but he didn’t release any music. No one really expected it, almost in the same way that no one expected Fall Out Boy to be coming back around the winter of 2013, too, because they announced their return almost out of nowhere. When JT released the first single of the album, “Suit & Tie,” I was ecstatic, because the song is really, really good, and it spoke to me, as I wore a lot of suits and ties during that time. It was a song that was tailor-made for me, but the song ended up being a huge hit. It was a cool, suave, and classy neo-soul tune that showed that he was back. He also brought Jay-Z in for a guest verse, and Hove’s verse was quite solid, too. I wasn’t into hip-hop at the time, but I always enjoyed how classy and suave Jay-Z’s verse came off. The second single, and I think the final single, to be released from The 20/20 Experience, was “Mirrors,” and I remember he performed it for the first time at the Grammy’s, but it was a great song. I really loved that song, and I still do today, honestly, but I was very excited for this record. Justin Timberlake is still one of my favorite pop and R&B singers today, because of how interesting and unique his sound has always been, and even continues to be. I plan on talking about his new album, Man Of The Woods, especially with how unfair people seem to be treating it.

In preparation of that album, as well as after it was released, I wanted to revisit some of his other albums, and I picked my two favorites – FutureSex / LoveSounds, and The 20/20 Experience (the first part, anyway; long story short, the second part is okay, but it’s awfully messy). I already talked about the former album, so it’s time to talk about the latter. If you couldn’t guess already, I love it. I loved The 20/20 Experience when it came out, and after revisiting it, I still love it today. This album is definitely not a part two of FutureSex / LoveSounds, but what I love about it is that it has the same feeling to it. One thing I talked about with that LP is that it sounds both familiar but futuristic at the same time. What was interesting about FutureSex / LoveSounds is that it was more of a futuristic-sounding album that had very familiar and pop-friendly sounds and elements to it, but The 20/20 Experience is the opposite. It’s a very retro-sounding record that has a lot of modern elements thrown into it, so it feels fresh and new. That’s what I enjoy about acts that bring a modern flair to a retro sound, because if you can’t add anything new or interesting to it, I’d rather just hear stuff that came out at that time. I’ve talked about how I’m really sick of the 80s pop trend, because a lot of artists and bands that emulate that style don’t add anything to it. This album is a good example of what you should do. It’s funny, because “Suit & Tie” is the most “accessible” song on the album, at least one of the most accessible, because there are a couple of songs that are very short, quick, and sweet, but a lot of this album is very spacious, ambitious, and expansive. The songs are between 5 – 9 minutes long. The songs on this thing are long, but they don’t feel boring, lackluster, or exhausting. The album doesn’t get weird in the typical sense, either, where it’s super experimental, obscure, and random noises, but the songs expand, grow, and flow naturally. They’re a bit longer on purpose, because they’re more exploratory this time around, which I really love. The album takes its time to move, grow, and flow, so if you’re not a big fan of longer songs, this album won’t do much for you.

JT’s voice on this record sounds absolutely fantastic, and it’s mainly because the album’s sound is a good mix of neo-soul, pop, R&B, and a bit of funk. Hell, “Let The Groove Get In,” for example, sounds basically like Michael Jackson’s “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’,” from 1982’s Thriller, and it sounds awesome. It’s got that 80s funk / dance sound to it, but he adds his own flair and identity. The thing is, JT’s voice works very well within the confines of these styles, so that’s why his voice sounds really nice. I’ve said before that he doesn’t have the best voice, and I’ll admit that, but he knows the limitations and strengths that his voice has and doesn’t have. He knows what he can do with his voice, and I like when singers know what they’re doing, as well as what their limits are. He sounds great within these classic styles, but it’s a bit more ambitious and interesting this time around. The lyrics, as I’ve said about FutureSex / LoveSounds, are hit or miss. Sometimes they’re great, such as on “Suit & Tie,” “Mirrors,” “That Girl,” and a few other tracks, but sometimes they kind of suck. Not even that they suck, they’re just super silly, weird, or dumb. “Strawberry Bubblegum,” “Spaceship Coupe,” and “Pusher Love Girl” are the best examples, but at the same time, they’re not horrible. They have some good lines within them, but they’re a bit over the top, silly, and they can definitely come off as dumb to people. Overall, though, I really enjoy this album. It’s a bit long, and if I had to cut out a song, I’d probably cut out the album closer, “Blue Ocean Floor.” As much as I like it, it doesn’t quite fit the tone of the album, since it’s got a slow-burning Frank Ocean (that’s a weird coincidence) feel to it, but it’s still a cool song. If anything, though, it’s a bit too slow, and it’s got too modern of a sound, so it doesn’t feel like it fits perfectly well, but I enjoy the song, nonetheless. I’d still say that FutureSex / LoveSounds would be the best introduction to his music, but this is a good second choice, especially if you like that album, so I’d still recommend this. It’s a classy, suave, ambitious, interesting, and awesome record that deserves a chance. I bet even the most stubborn rock / metal fans might be able to find something to like about this record.

Kissed someone and regretted it: I used to: The first (and only) person that I kissed broke my heart.  For a while I was angry at him and at myself, but now I’ve come to peace with everything that happened between us.  Even though we never got together, I’m thankful that I still have him as a friend and that I shared that experience with him.   8. (and I knew that was his purpose for dating, at the time) I didn’t want to lead him on or waste his time.

I do hope that he finds someone special.  He’s a really good guy.   80. Home-video review: The Lego Batman Movie [MINOR SPOILERS]

I think it’s safe to safe that The Lego Movie (2014) made a bigger splash than anyone expected. For being essentially a glorified hour-and-a-half commercial for the Danish toy company, the sheer amount of zany comedy, self-aware satire, all-around inventiveness in the use of the film’s peculiar visual style and unexpectedly genuine emotional content won over the vast majority of critics and overall viewers, immediately establishing the franchise as something to look forward to for a number of years to come.

As the original’s breakout comedy side character – not to mention one of the most marketable properties in pop culture – it was only natural that the Lego version of DC Comics’ Dark Knight would be the first to get a spin-off of his own, and so The Lego Batman Movie was assembled for the joy of children still too young to find Zack Snyder’s testosterone cocktails enjoyable.

The result is formulaic, but definitely entertaining. Unlike The Lego Movie, which focussed on original characters while incorporating patented characters such as Batman for added laughs – and to show off the Lego catalogue, of course – this spin-off is by necessity more contained within the DC universe, albeit with some humorous detours into other fan-favourite pop culture franchises... and with the added fourth-wall-breaking option to reference not just one iteration of the Batman mythos, but rather all its cinematic incarnations over the course of 50 years.

It’s a parody tour de force, and it pays substantial comedic dividends: the film is hilarious from start to finish, with a lot of laugh-out-loud moments especially for long-time fans of the character in his various declinations. In a way, though, that’s also where the movie starts having a little trouble. The Lego Movie achieved the considerable feat of having “crossover appeal” – i.e. being fun for the whole family, rather than bemusing children with adult humour or boring parents with kiddie jokes – and it did so with remarkable balance. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are truly formidable authors in that specific area: their brand of comedy is silly and energetic enough to appeal to children, but also surreal enough to entertain adult viewers – at least those who don’t hate Monty Python; I’ve checked, such wretched creatures do exist – on absurdity value alone.

The Lego Batman Movie was instead assembled by committee, and it shows. Its writers’ room counted five authors in total, building upon a story draft by famed parodist – and holder of a peculiarly mediocre filmography track record – Seth Grahame Smith, himself one of the five builders of the final script. As I said, almost all jokes in the film are good (some are more tired than others), but the different voices at work within the screenplay alternate in a perceivable manner. In the end, the trope-savvy and ‘80s-pop-culture-referencing jokes as well as the collaborative nature of the whole effort make the film work more like a less crude – in every sense of the term – episode of Robot Chicken than anything else.

So this film’s comedy is way more angled towards adult viewers – and lore-versed comic fans at that – than a younger audience. To compensate for this, The Lego Batman Movie chooses to dedicate itself to a plot that, while not without its slight nuances, is really simple and straightforward both in terms of its events’ progression and the characters’ emotional arcs: that’s where the appeal to younger viewers comes in, along with a couple especially annoying licensed pop songs thrown into the mix to entertain Minions-loving toddlers.

That having been said, for all its simplicity the movie’s storyline is charming and offers a funny but heartfelt alternate take on the Caped Crusader’s brooding emotional life – even though at times the whole affair feels a bit like the extended season finale for a hypothetical My Little Batman: Friendship is Magic TV show, and I’ll leave it to you to decide how ironic it is that I serendipitously ended up referencing another franchise whose existence revolves entirely around selling toys. Although I must confess to a hint of personal bias: for me and a few selected others, this film likely felt less original than to everyone else... because it’s almost the exact same premise as Team Starkid’s hilarious Holy Musical B@man!, also featuring a way better Batman vs. Superman fight than any involving a CGI Ben Affleck.

So, that was my overall impression: The Lego Batman Movie’s comedy has a chance to alienate children, while its plot has a chance to feel too light to adult viewers. The product still holds crossover appeal, but by aiming separate aspects of itself at different target audiences rather than by achieving consistent whole-family marketability across the board. Thanks to solid writing, a talented cast and Chris McKay’s  – formerly animation director for The Lego Movie – lively directorial input, however, it’s unlikely you’ll walk away from it unsatisfied.

All in all, I think that if you’re looking for a funny but nonetheless emotionally solid superhero parody, the oft-overlooked Megamind is still the superior piece of entertainment. That consideration aside, The Batman Lego Movie definitely deserves a watch; maybe just not the permanent place on the shelf that both its parent franchises do.

I do a lot of ranting here.  And when I have something I want to gush about, the internal editor in me says “nobody cares.  Why force people to read about your silly likes?”  Well, shut up editor.  Although I’ll put it behind a cut anyway.

What am I gushing about?  The 2007 movie Music and Lyrics.  I love this movie and will do more analysis than you’d think a romcom warrants.  Now, the part under the cut.  Um, this movie is old, but I will talk about how it ends.  Not that there’s some big exciting twist or reveal, but if you read, you’ll know exactly how it ends, even though it shouldn’t be hard to figure out.

Okay, summary.  Which I would say quick, but I don’t know if I’m capable of that.  Hugh Grant is Alex Fletcher a washed up former 80′s pop star.  The latest teen sensation (played by Haley Bennett) wants him to write a song for her and sing it with her, which will bring him back into the spotlight.  The thing is, he can only write music, he can’t write lyrics.  But, the woman who’s filling in to water his plants, Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore) turns out to have a talent for writing.  They collaborate and fall in love and because it’s not a subversive story, it ends happily ever after.

Okay, so besides just liking the catchy music, I love the growth and relationship of the main characters.  Each one is lacking in self confidence and the other one helps build them up.  Sophie has been afraid to write after getting burned by a college writing professor.  So there are two scenes where one of them boosts the confidence of the other.  Sophie runs into her former professor (who she slept with previously and who wrote a book casting her as a temptress) while she and Alex are having dinner and he (Alex) encourages her to go and confront the professor and say all the things she wanted to say to him.  And when she tries but can’t manage, he steps in and tells the professor off.Then (or before, because I can’t recall the chronology of the events) Alex is performing some of his old hits at a fair or amusement park, because that’s what his career has come to. And he’s hit by a wave of embarrassment, seeing himself as this washed up guy still singing old music that no one wants.  And Sophie tells him that his music is good and it makes people happy and he should be proud of it.  I love that each character gets to help and be helped.

And then there are the tough love scenes.  They write this ballad, but the singer wants them to make it sexier.  Which will ruin the song, which is good the way it is.  Alex is willing to do anything, because he’s only worried about having a hit.  So, he’s not willing to fight for the song the way it is, and Sophie calls him out on it.  Then, when they’re trying to write the last verse of the song before the deadline, Sophie says she’s not inspired, she can’t write at the moment and has to wait until she is.  And, Alex tells her what any want to be writer needs to hear.  You don’t wait for inspiration to write.  And then, he says something pretty mean.  And I don’t know if it’s meant to be something he says out of anger that’s totally baseless, or if there’s supposed to be merit, but it’s still wrong to say because it’s still said out of anger and not the desire to help.  But, both characters take the valid criticisms to heart.  She brings herself (alone) to finish the lyrics and he goes and argues for the song to be sung the way it was intended. 

And it ends with the concert, him performing a song/apology, and the two of them living happily ever after as professional song writers.

Another thing I like is that while they’re flawed, they’re nice people. They care about each other.  Even though Alex talks about how everything is just business when saying why he’s willing to sell himself short, he shows earlier that he listens to Sophie explain where her beaten down self confidence comes from (and this is even before they become lovers).  They build each other up.  And I love that there’s no other man or woman as the obstacle.  No “this person is super bland so you don’t feel bad about them getting dumped”  or “you know the person is meant to be bland enough that you don’t care, but you resent the movie for making the character like that, so you can’t really root for the main couple even though you’re supposed to”.  There’s also no silly misunderstanding.  The conflict between them that needs to be resolved is professional.  It’s about the work.  And they resolve it by being willing to do what needs to be done for the work. 

And yes, it’s a frothy story and there’s clearly an age difference, but they’re both adults and there’s no power imbalance.  But, it’s just nice to think there was some thought into the characters and their relationship and what makes sense for them.

So, I’ll end there.  Most people, when they go on about some piece of entertainment or fandom they love, it comes out like a well crafted essay with some deep psychological insight thrown in.  I feel like I just word vomited the plot with a few lines of “And that’s why I like it and you should too.”  Oh, well.  At least I wrote about something I love.
