i just wanna say that being a Ukrainian is difficult asf. russia is literally committing genocide on us, kills our best people, strikes hospitals and houses, tortures civilians, murders children, all while still sitting un the UNSC and having a shit ton of influence over the West through propaganda. “white people” will never treat us as equal: they probably never even heard of us in the first place and thought we were a part of russia. they ask us if we have Internet or malls in Ukraine like it’s a cavemen county and not one in the centre of Europe. people of color think that we get some sort of “special treatment” in our literal struggle to survive, because they didn’t receive it (i can’t blame them, really, but sometimes they go too far in their bitterness). our allies do help us, but they didn’t want to give us any sort of serious ammunition/weapons/warplanes because they were afraid of escalation, not to mention that they were ready to let us be devoured by russian terrorists in the beginning of the full-scale invasion. the UN congratulated the world with fucking russian language day on the day those bastards blew up the Kakhovka dam, killing hundreds, not evacuating civilians in occupied regions, because that was the point. killing. as a Ukrainian poet and politician Volodymyr Vynnychenko once said, and i hate that those words are true, “being a Ukrainian is being in a constant state of proving your right of existence.”

Being Ukrainian, born in Russia, with family friends in both countries is an insane experience. A literal distillation of convos from the last few months:

Ukrainians: We haven’t had a full night of sleep since February. No running water for months now, and now the electricity goes out. They’re bombing us non-stop. They aim for the houses at night, and the city center and offices and schools during the day, to kill as many civilians as possible. I sent my daughter to relative safety in Kyiv, but I don’t want to leave my mother, who had a stroke due to war-induced stress and is paralyzed. The hospitals wouldn’t take her because they were full of war casualties. She lies in bed and we hope that a missile doesn’t strike our building, because she can’t go to the bomb shelter. I’ll try to call you next time we get electricity.

Russians: Ugh its so expensive to travel to Turkey right now, we decided to take a two week holiday in Sochi instead. It’s not as nice but we have to persevere. Oh, what’s that? The news? I try not too pay too much attention to it when I’m using my VPN to access instagram and twitter, it just makes me soo sad. You know I’m not political. Hopefully this little war-sy is over soon, because I have to redecorate my house and Ikea is still closed.

Westerners whose entire political philosophy is “vibes” and who think cyrillic is a type of salad: yeah, yeah. bombing, missiles, blah BLAH yawn. Frankly the real war crime is being mean to Russians on the internet.

i feel like i should keep studying russian so i can achieve my career goals but i also want to study ukrainian so badly… ***** said my ukrainian pronunciation sounds really good and natural so i feel like it wouldn’t be too difficult for me from the standpoint of speaking the language (i get a lot of anxiety about my accent and whatnot when i speak foreign languages, idk why). but at the same time i’m scared my north american anglo brain can only handle two languages at most so idk what to do right now. i think if i move toward mastering russian i can see how i feel about ukrainian then and try it afterward. or i could find some ukrainian cultural centre and try to study from there, i’m sure there are a lot of resources sort of hidden around my city
