body language (and some other stuff) analysis: peter quill and rocket raccoon (roquill focused)

I am not a body language expert this is my theory based on body language research and studying the characters don't @ me.

We're doing this by movies folks!

GOTG VOL. 1

Rocket Raccoon and Peter Quill mirror each other constantly throughout the first film, constantly.

If Peter holds his hip, Rocket holds his, as soon as Peter relaxes his pose (both arms by his side), Rocket relaxes his.

Mirroring is a sign of attraction and I think it all started in the Kyln.

In the beginning, when they're in the Kyln, after getting sprayed with that goo, and Rocket walks in naked, his pose is very guarded and self-conscious because he's in a vulnerable position, (his shoulders rounded, his ears flicked slightly forward, and his eyes shifty while avoiding anyone's gaze, he adopts that pose many times, each time with Peter being mentioned or Peter being there, I'll get into that later) Peter, although curious, he...says...nothing. He doesn't take advantage of Rockets vulnerable state, he doesn't make fun of him, he doesn't pity him, he stays silent. That was the beginning of Rocket's affinity for him. That was the beginning of his little crush/like/appreciation/attraction.

(this scene always stood out to me for Rocket's posture and Peter's reaction to Rocket's scars and cybernetic enhancements. The 'unspoken things' passing between them.)

He starts to be aware of Peter's movements, and engaging in contact

- people say, 'hey why are Peter's hold ups explored, his hold ups with dating/being attracted to a raccoon (although rocket ain't a regular raccoon, he's person, a him, he's as much an animal as human beings are) and not Rocket's hold ups with dating a humie well here's this: he engages, multiple times, with Peter with touch. He initiates touch multiple times. He just doesn't really appreciate when someone else initiates touch. I honestly don't think rocket even thinks about it as humie vs raccoon. I think he more of thinks of it as his insecurities vs the world.

But Peter didn't mind his insecurities. So, he's aware of Peter's whereabouts, instantly scurries to follow him, puts a hand on his thigh, and whispers 'Quill', which is really a plea for not going further. He doesn't stop him, he asks him.

AND EVEN THEN!! they're mirroring each other. Or Rocket, more specifically, is mirroring Peter.

Eyes! Peter always, always, looks for Rocket and when Rocket does or says something, he looks for Peter, first.

The first person in trouble they both look for is each other, to make sure they're safe.

Peter immediately, after Rocket crashed his plane into Ronan, checked on him.

They're usually standing near or next to each other, with open arms and open torso. The only time Rocket closes this is when he's doing his, insecurities vs the world or vs the group, thing, or he's coming to a decision or he feels too vulnerable, or he's trying to be....firm....on his decision, so he'll cross his arms , look away, hunch his shoulders.

Peter actually sorta adopts the same pose when he's embarrassed, holding his arms closer together, messing with his fingers, looking away, hunching his shoulders.

Peter often ducks his head to meet Rocket's eyes, nobody else really does that, Rocket usually has to look up, and will swivel his head to pay attention to what Rocket says.

Interest ^ he's actively interested.

Rocket is invested in Peter, in the background often times, he's looking at Peter and observing what is going on

Rocket's super observant. He's even more observant with Peter. His ears twitch and his head tilts a little.

Interest ^ actively interested.

Anyways, overall, in the first movie, Rocket is a lot more touchy and close to Peter and Peter calls Rocket his friend two seconds after knowing him. Peter immediately sees him. There's a click! here.

This is what I like to call...a slight attraction, a small crush, on Rockets part. Peter? Peter thinks Rocket is interesting, he's his friend, c'mon, but Gamora? Gamora is the pretty girl that can kill him. He's already got a lot on his plate. He's already got someone.

There's an unspoken thing alright but it's not just the one you're focused on, buddy.

Mirroring, looking, choosing, interest. Tilted towards one another or paralleled, don't even get me started on the goddamn music! (That's for another time)

In GOTG VOL 2, all of that changes.

VOL 1 , Attraction

VOL 2, Love

GOTG VOL 2

Immediately, there's more of a rift between them.

It is so palpable. It's dense. There is an air between them, with Rocket in the beginning sorta trying to make Peter feel better about the high priestess being a not very nice lady and winking at Quill but it not being received well, and Peter not really joking too much with Rocket. Rocket pulling away. It's a very tense air. There is tension.

This movie, Rocket focuses on interacting with baby Groot, Gamora, Drax. He, unlike in the first movie, hardly ever interacts with Peter unless it's to tease him or to defend him (in the beginning of Vol. 2)

There's a noticeable pushing away.

And, unlike the first movie, there is little to none mirroring. There isn't any mirroring but there is a lot more, from Rocket's part, self conscious posing and guarded expression while Peter is still dynamic.

Possibly because Rocket is a little more closed off and he's compensating because he's not used to Rocket pulling away like he is, especially from Peter and on some level Peter doesn't know how to cope with that so it's making Peter agitated as well, and well

Rocket doesn't like to be open, vulnerable like that. He doesn't. So he's pushing Peter away.

And the reason why? The reason why he hunches his shoulders, his ears hang forward, and he avoids eye contact? The very things he does when he's feeling vulnerable? Is because he loves Peter and is trying to cover it up.

He loves him. What happened last time he loved someone dearly? What happened?? So he pushes them away so they don't get hurt because he blames himself for the hurt that's happened in the past.

He pushes Peter away.

He only ever adopts that body language in the movie when Peter is brought up or he is talking to Peter, and the only reason why he didn't act that way when getting the music together or whenever talking to the high priestess is because he was 1. Focusing on something else, and 2. He was defending Peter, he had his arms crossed in front of him in a defensive, guarded posture, his feet shifted slightly, and his chest puffed, because what the priestess said about Peter pissed him off.

(he is imperfect, his friends of past were imperfect, he's been dealing with this shit his whole life, he's mad, and trying to make Quill feel better. It doesn't work, the rift deepens, yadda yadda.)

When Yondu brings up Peter while they're waiting for baby Groot to grab the fin, Rocket does his vulnerable pose, whenever Peter leaves and tells him, 'are you trying to make everybody hate you?', he does that pose, and besides that he also does the pose when he's trying to get dressed in the Kyln, after getting sprayed down.

Another positioning aspect I noticed, is that, throughout vol 1 and vol 2, Rocket is in between Gamora and Peter. Consistently in between Gamora and Peter. The only time this ceases is after Yondu makes Rocket acknowledge he's in love with Peter ('for what? for honour? for love?' Rocket looking at Yondu with a heart broken expression of surprise because he saw through him, because he knows.) And Rocket and Peter mend their breaking chain by Rocket apologizing in his own way ('and he stole batteries he didn't need?' 'of course not.'). Because they needed to mend that broken chain, because Rocket needed to know that he felt the way he felt and accepted that and moved on with acceptance because Peter likes/loves Gamora. Peter doesn't feel that way about him. And so, after their relationship is mended, and Rocket realizes this, he literally and metaphorically moves out of the way of their relationship.

Only after Peter and Rocket's relationship is mended does Peter enter a relationship with Gamora.

Because! Peter and Rocket has always been the most important relationship in the group. Everything would go out of tilt if they had a rocky relationship. (heh puns)

Anyways. 2nd Vol. Love, and 1st vol. Attraction.

More Things I noticed:

Rocket's resting position is his arms crossed, and feet neutral, posture neutral. He crosses his arms often, but depending on the look on his face and the things goin on, changes why he's crossing them, and Peter's resting position is both his hands on his hips, sorta like he's about to put his fingers in his pockets. Both Peter and Rocket talk with their hands.

Whenever Pete is pissed, he brings his arms closer to his body and balls his fingers into fists. He, much like Rocket, goes from 0 to 100. Especially when it involves those he loves.

Whenever Rocket is pissed he spreads his feet evenly for more balance and brandishes his claws and shows his teeth (unless he has his guns, or he's drunk, then it's slightly different as with Peter.)

Whenever Mantis went to pet Rocket the first time, he was listening and barely snapped at her fingers with his teeth. He heard Drax joking, is my theory. He coulda snapped her fingers clean off. He didn't.

Peter has open body language most of the time, his arms open, and his feet apart, he becomes more closed off and tense when he's angry (body language right) and he becomes more deflated when he's embarrassed (shoulders hunched, eyes downcast, twiddling with fingers/thumbs, not as talkative)

Peter checks on Rocket more than he does anyone else when they are fighting (except baby Groot, he checks on baby Groot a lot, everyone does, he's baby Groot). Not out of lack of trust or doubt of capability but out of worry and care. When he was fighting Ego, he didn't look for Yondu during the fight, until after Yondu was already getting crushed, but multiple times, he looked for Rocket.

Whenever they landed in the area they needed to to connect the bomb to Egos core, Peter slid over Rocket and landed at his feet and Rocket smirked at him. (It was a soft, sorta fond smirk, not the devious smirk he usually does.)

This was a lot of information. I hope this made sense. I got distracted 60 times. I lost count and recounted. That's probably not an accurate number. Please leave questions in the notes for me to answer if you have any, and I will do GOTG VOL 3 after I have it so I can rewatch it as many times as I need.

Thank you, Rocket loves Peter, and Peter loves Rocket (although he doesn't really realize it in GOTG VOL 1 and 2. I think he knows there's a fondness maybe but it's not a conscious thing.)

Some thoughts about vol 2 (Roquill focused):

There's a tension between Peter and Rocket throughout the entire Vol 2. It's not that palpable (or really even developed too much, yet) during the sound system set up (and although Peter wasn't entirely for the music, it not being the most important thing right now, he wasn't MAD). It does start to develop later. I have a theory as to why/when it actually started to develop which may be briefly discussed.

Anyhows, moving on.

Gamora, Rocket, and Peter all check in on baby Groot multiple times.

Drax and Groot have more of a brotherly bond. He doesn't warn Groot to be careful, he 'warns him' or 'intimidates him' about his dancing during the fight but not out of worry, out of genuine annoyance, like a sibling would. Whenever Drax crashes into the music, Groot kicks and hits him. Brothers, that's brotherhood.

Later on, Drax takes all of his belongings with him on the trip to Ego because he doesn't want Groot messing with his stuff. Classic big brother, little brother dynamic.

It's either, extremely immature/impulsive uncle and mischievous nephew or brothers. Drax is NOT a Father figure to Groot, no matter what.

Back to the fight.

Peter shouts, 'Rocket! Get it to look up!' and with NO HESITATION, Rocket knows exactly what Peter means (which is a recurring part of their dynamic and goes to show they are married) and then Peter flies up to join him.

During the fight, Rocket and Peter mirror each other exactly.

(and I noticed that Rocket gets real loud when he fights. It brings him exultation and he's ecstatic.)

But Peter and Rocket are side by side during the fight, mirroring. Rocket checks in on Peter frequently and Peter looks worriedly over at Rocket too (though not as much). During the fight, they get caught up in flames, and although it's Rocket whose gun catches fire, Rocket still shouts 'Quill!' and worriedly scans him. The look on Rocket's face is terrified. His eyes wide, mouth open. The only reason why his gun catches fire is because he was distracted and looking out for Quill.

Bam! That's when the tension started. I think. Rocket wasn't looking out for himself and was too caught up in what Quill was doing. He realized how deeply and truly in love he was. He couldn't afford to go through the pain of loss he didn't choose again. Rocket felt that, which is why he steals the batteries. To put distance between them, but also because he doesn't know how to cope with this.

Rocket's smart. He knew they would've been found out for stealing the batteries. He did not do it, 'on a whim'. Yeah, they're cool, and yeah, he could do some awesome shit with them, but he also loves his family. He wasn't surprised when they were found. He was like, 'ah damn.' but not surprised. His expression when looking at the batteries was contemplative, and then, when they insulted Peter, which he hated, it cemented his decision for him. Screw those bastards, sorta thing. It was a combination of realizing he was in love with Quill and creating distance to protect himself (which is why he FIRST steals the batteries) and then the Sovereign were stuck up bitches that insulted Quill which really made him settled in his decision.

He was already gonna steal the batteries (gotta create distance) but now it was mixed in with a good heaping of 'screw these conceited dicks'

I also think he wasn't fully aware of how destructive and zealous the Sovereign could be.

That's my headcanon.

Back to what I noticed.

Drax is everyone's best friend. In this movie Rocket limits his interaction with Quill, and he has a lot more interactions with Gamora, Groot, and Drax. Something that made me laugh, is after Rocket insults the Gold™️ People, because he truly hated how they insulted Peter, his baby boo...friend, Drax picks Rocket up by his vest/jumpsuit and turns him around as they walk away. Drax is smiling and Rocket is laughing.

They're just....they're just best friends. I love them. Then Rocket is like, 'you wanna buy some batteries?' and Drax guffaws. They're best friends. Drax is best friends with literally everyone in the team.

This is why Drax and Rocket are best friends and Peter and Rocket are...more. The dynamics are completely different. There is SO MUCH tension between Peter and Rocket. Just like Drax and Peter are best friends. Look at the difference in dynamics and that'll tell ya a lot. Just like Nebula and Rocket are best friends and Nebula and Peter are friends and, yeah, I could go on, but there is extreme tension between Rocket and Peter. Rocket and Gamora are friends.

I noticed a similarity between Gamora and Peter and Rocket and Peter and that is that they both bicker-flirt. Both ships bicker-flirt. Anyways.

Then whenever the Sovereign catch up to them and they're going through the astro-field, they're hit by one, there is the same terror-stricken expression on Rocket's face. And he's not looking at Groot, or Gamora, or Drax. He looks right at Peter. His mouth open, like he wants to say something. They could very well die, and he looks at Peter with terror, and worry, and love, and he opens his mouth to say something.

It's over too soon for him to though, cuz they're crashing, and there's a tiny man killing all the Sovereign, and they've survived, and Rocket's defenses are back up.

I didn't really notice anything in the next few scenes. Rocket just playfully chasing after Peter (he's launched himself at a person from a longer distance away and incapacitated them with no problem, if he was truly upset, he'd have actually hurt Peter) swiping his hands at him and Peter blocking. They're cute.

During the campfire scene, which I believe has been noticed before, Rocket is listening throughout the entire thing. He sits directly across from Peter, mirroring him and angled towards him, and his ears flick in interest with anything having to do with Peter. His head is slightly cocked to the side in intrigue.

Rocket, in the comics, I believe, can smell emotions, and so he would've been able to smell Drax's amusement or, being as observant as he is, noticed it. He absolutely knew what Drax was gonna do. He lightly snapped at Mantis because of it.

They're best friends. They're family. Rocket was absolutely in on the joke.

'Never break the chain' has been noticed/discussed before. Peter is upset with Rocket and Rocket is pushing Peter away (because he loves him). I honestly don't think Peter views it as him leaving Rocket. I think Peter views it as Rocket leaving him . After all, Rocket is the one who has been putting distance between them.

They leave. Peter is upset so it's not much of a sting to him to go with Ego and leave everything unresolved (and, throughout it all, he still trusts Rocket) but to Rocket it's a gaping wound he's ignoring cuz he placed it there.

Whenever Gamora and Peter are on the balcony, Peter tries to distract her from contacting Rocket, several times, implying it's obviously on his mind and he doesn't want to think about it.

Rocket's urgency, his need to get to Peter as fast as he can. He's so urgent he doesn't even know they're gonna fight a planet.

Yondu helping/forcing him to realize/face his shit and his love for Peter.

Gamora and Rocket interacting. Her correcting Nebula when she calls Rocket a fox. Really, just Gamora defending Rocket's technology, correcting people when they call him a raccoon or a fox. Just Gamora being respectful towards Rocket. That's solidarity right there. I love their friendship. Rocket trusting Gamora's skills, too.

Despite Peter feeling whatever he felt about Rocket, he's still so relieved to see him. He cranes his neck to look at Rocket, making his posture awful, and probably uncomfortable, just to look at him.

Two seconds after seeing each other, reading each other's minds. Rocket is jubilant, he's so damn happy to see Peter again. He's talking super fast, and grinning so wide. In this scene, all Peter had to do is say, 'Rocket' and Rocket got the lasers ready to cut into the planet That's some mind-reading, married couple, soulmate shit.

And, again, Rocket immediately understands what Quill means when he says, 'well...' whenever they're discussing the way to get the bomb to Egos core. He doesn't even need to elaborate for Rocket to understand that Groot is the only one who could attach the bomb to Egos core. Then the teasing griping that Rocket does. They're just...two married people griping and having to go through the strains of marriage throughout the entire movie.

And as soon as Rocket is around Peter again, Peter's eyes are locked on Rocket quite often. It's like he doesn't notice anyone else. When they're getting ready to go out of the aircraft to investigate the core, he looks intently at him, and even then, whenever Rocket is telling Groot what he should do, Peter stays within ear shot. He just likes being near Rocket. It's shown again right after the superhero shot, with them all standing together, when Peter goes up to Rocket right when shit hits the fan, and the first person Peter looks to when Ego starts grabbing things with his energy tentacles? The very first? Is Rocket.

He only looks back to Gamora when she gets pulled to the damn beyond.

He looks at Yondu whenever he shouts at him.

He looks at Rocket throughout the entire fight.

The tension is gone after the fight, after losing the father he'd had his entire life and only realized just then he had him, after killing the father that was never there. The tension is gone and Peter has probably already forgiven Rocket, the sting that never really was or at least wasn't as acknowledged or noticed, dissipated, and yet Rocket's wound was still aching, and so Rocket apologizes in his own way, and Peter understands.

Then, only then, do Gamora and Peter get together.

I also like how the Guardians just adopt anyone. 'You have a complex relationship with your creator? Wonderful. You'll fit right in.' They just fuckin adopted Mantis because she was kind...kinda fucked up.

Basically, this movie is about Rocket and Peter. It's hidden story line is Rocket and Peter's relationship, and it is tucked underneath the overall story of Peter meeting his father and all the other themes. It's about overcoming. It's about realizing all that you've ever wanted is in front of you. It's about being content with what you have.

Just like Rocket's acceptance of his (presumed) unreturned feelings and realization that he has them.

Just like Peter appreciating the Guardians as his family and repairing his relationship with Rocket, instead of running away or ignoring it.

Just sitting here thinking about Leon’s physique in RE4R in comparison to all of his other eras. Like Capcom really sat down and was like, “we’re upgrading the twink into a MEGA beefy boy fighting bisexual demons” for the remake and decided to make him so thick and broad like hello!?

Meanwhile Leon’s never really been scrawny or lanky, he’s kinda slim-thick. Like he has muscles and probably has nice shoulders and thick thighs, but he’s not beefy in the sense of looking like a power lifter. They said fuck all that and just gave Leon huge pecs and biceps in RE4R and he’s thick as hell. Like don’t get me wrong, I love his build and honestly the fact that he doesn’t have the classic dorito build but his waist still tapers in a bit is so…MMMMM FAWK!

He’s so…whew…I keep thinking about it. I honest to god want to take a tape measure and just see the distance from shoulder to shoulder and across his chest. He looks like he’d give good hugs, just consumes you whole and his chest is so inviting and warm. I need him…BAD!
