First things first: The world of Nimona is a marvellous piece of worldbuilding. That being said...
Tumblr media
The local cuisine quite clearly is skewed towards Tex-Mex dishes.

And can we please talk about that lovely little startle of the waiter. Such a great animation! I finally fell in love when they showed him for one additional, sweet split second. With the now obsolete nachos. Poor guy. Excellent movie.

So, we get Netflix free with our phone plan...and just got notified that the Netflix version we have access to will be downgraded... to Netflix with ads. Netflix... has ads now? This defeats the whole purpose of why @netflix was invented in the first place?!?? Who the hell would pay for that, when you can just watch TV with ads... on TV? Or pirate those same shows for free, with no ads.
Netflix... you were the chosen one! It was said that you would destroy cable TV, not join them! You were to bring balance to television and streaming, not leave it in darkness!
Pictured below - actual picture of my disgust, and below that an image of Netflix's self-destructive habits finally catching up with them.

i think for me, the watcher situation comes down to this:
it's absolutely respectable that the watcher team wants to grow and produce better quality content. it's respectable that they don't want to stagnate and end up pushing the same content out over and over again. that's not satisfying for them creatively, i get that.
however, if higher quality, more heavily produced content is not what your fans are asking for, then you can't ask them to fund it.
this all-or-nothing method they've gone for is frankly bizarre. it feels like they leap-frogged all other alternatives to improving their finances and ended up here, alienating and frustrating the majority of their fanbase (the fanbase they thanked for getting them to where they are).
i think this could have gone a lot better if they:
Hadn't hyped up this video for a week.
Hadn't announced the worth it successor just beforehand.
Hadn't put out a wishy-washy, "boo hoo we're so sad about this", over-produced video.
Hadn't made it $6/month (more in a lot of countries given exchange rates).
Had considered that this means fans in specific countries literally cannot pay for the subscription due to geo/region-locking.
my ideas for improving their funds, aka things they could have tried before blowing their brand up: create their own website with two options - a free version with ads and a paid version without ads, OR make better use of their patreon/make their website extra content, not all their content, for example:
Put the ghost file debriefs on there.
Put shows like survival mode on there (or even shift that show from pre-recorded video to live-stream - live stream access to patrons and VOD access to everyone, maybe).
Put episode commentaries there.
Do reaction videos to their old buzzfeed content, talk about memories and BTS, and put that there.
Put one/two episodes of each show, per season on there (and ONLY there).
Put the episodes up there a few days early.
Make specific, website only content (that's not your main and most popular series aka ghost files and puppet history).
Record the live, in-person shows and put those VODs up there.
EDIT (thought of something else lmao): put extended or even uncut versions of ghost files on there. Paranormal Detour on Detune's twitch channel has shown that people will willingly sit through 6+ hours of a ghost investigation.
EDIT: idk, do livestreams once a week where you watch scary movies with fans on discord or twitch.
(side note: the fact that they're not taking down their patreon and instead shifting all of their podcast content on there, something the patreons who have been loyally giving them money for years didn't ask for, is ridiculous and greedy. add to this the fact that they don't even get a free sub to the new website, instead get 40% off - a measly 10% more than anyone else who subs before the official launch).
the thing for me is that they're claiming they want to make "television" and "television-grade content". that's completely fine. what's not completely fine is acting like your four episodes a month is equal to netflix's entire catalogue.
this really felt like it should have been something they told us they were progressing towards, not something they revealed to be on the imminent horizon. idk, it just feels out of nowhere. no, they don't owe us all of the info about their company. but something had to be better than this.
final thought - it's okay and valid to be upset at the team for this. for a lot of people, it's a complete betrayal (especially the comment that $6 a month is something "anyone and everyone can afford", i mean yikes). i do think some people's anger got the best of them, and some of the comments i've seen across youtube, twitter, and tumblr are plain bullying, racism, and harassment. until we have the whole story, we can't decide that one founder (aka steven in a lot of people's minds) is solely responsible. i know a lot of these awful things are only coming from a small minority of the fandom, but they still get seen.
at the end of the day, all three of them got up in front of a camera and made this video, together. that can only lead us to the conclusion that they made this decision together. acting like these men in their 30s couldn't stand up against it if they truly wanted to, is so strange and parasocial lmao.
tl;dr there were much better ways of going about this announcement, if it even needed to be made at all. however, that doesn't excuse the hateful shit being spewed at the team. for now, all we know is the three founders decided they were done with youtube, and done with their loyal youtube audience.
(i have so many more thoughts on this but i need to stop lmao. however i do wonder how different things could have been if 1. they had hired someone with actual business experience as their CEO from the jump, and 2. this video was more of a "hey we're broke! this is a last-ditch effort to save our company!". guess those questions will remain ... well ... you know ...).

Another YouTuber has talked about the Dead Boy Detectives cancellation and asked if they should do a full series where they explore each episode!
You know what to do!!!! Subscribe to Amanda, like, and comment! Thank her and tell her you subscribed and would love to see more Dead Boy Detectives content from her!
youtube
Stay positive, stay focused, keep fighting. We will save Dead Boy Detectives! I know it's easy to get bogged down, but if you start feeling pessimistic do not let that feeling consume you. Just step away for a second and breathe, do something that refreshes you, and come back when you're ready.
You're not in this alone. Netflix is banking on waiting this out until we are all fatigued and our numbers have dwindled. DO NOT give them that satisfaction. Be loud, keep streaming. We're doing great!

So, Where to Watch AMC Interview with the Vampire?
Tumblr media
Surely you have seen gifs of AMC Interview with the Vampire and wonder where you can watch it. Of course you can 🏴‍☠️, but unfortunately in the world of streaming, numbers matter to keep the show afloat. So, here is Where to Watch IWTV aka WtW IWTV. This list will be updated from time to time 😉
WATCH PILOT EPISODE ON YOUTUBE FOR FREE (USA or with 🌐)
youtube
Listing STREAMING services only. Ctrl+F to find your country. (or click for direct links here)
Free (ad-supported or otherwise): 🆓
VPN-friendly: 🌐
Need to make free account (with fake address): 📝 (details under the cut)
All have two (2) seasons available unless otherwise stated
IWTV also has an Uncut version. It means no cuts for commercial breaks (✂️) or censored curses(🙅🏼‍♀️).
Trigger warnings for IWTV can be found here
• AMC+ : USA 🌐✂️🙅🏼‍♀️ (Every Sunday at 3 AM ET), Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, India
You can sign up to AMC+ with VPN, non-American CC and American zip code. They'll fail to bill you, but you'll still get the 7-day free trial to binge watch. OR you can do this email trick to get more trial.
AMC+ is also available as a "channel" on Amazon Prime (USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand), Apple TV or iTunes (USA, UK, Canada, Australia, India), Roku or YouTube TV in some countries, so try to search there first
• Amazon Prime ✂️🙅🏼‍♀️ (w/o having to buy AMC+ subs): Latin America, India
• Amediateka: Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan (censored)
• ABC iview 🆓 🌐📝✂️ : Australia
• BBC iPlayer 🆓 🌐📝✂️🙅🏼‍♀️: UK

• TVNZ+ 🆓 📝 (haven't tried with 🌐): New Zealand
Disclaimer: I don't condone the use of VPN and fake address. HOWEVER, the series isn't available in almost most part of this world 😭. So, this is done with the purpose of giving the series the views it deserves instead of giving them to 🏴‍☠️. If your country is listed above, please support the show 🙏
For BBC: UK VPN on, sign up, Google UK zip code and add it, yes to TV license. You can turn VPN off after the episode loads.
For ABC iview: Australia VPN on, sign up, pick Overseas. You can turn VPN off after episode loads. Works on the app as well.
Check reply for VPN I used.
Feel free to reply or message me if you fail to stream it and if there's any info I missed or got wrong. Also, feel free to share this list with anyone!
Special thanks to Ari for always keeping us updated with the news on the show

It's MaxFunDrive! If you're already a MaxFun Member, all of this year's Bonus Content should be in your feed already - this year's TAZ BoCo is a one shot of Plato's Rave, with all three boys GMing while Clint is the only PC, and it is ART. The MBMBaM BoCo is a recording of the boys trying to figure out how to run that game, and it's so, so fun - honestly you could listen to either one first and I think it would work well, but imo listening to them plot how they think things will go first is a very fun way to go about it.
Sawbones has another Kid's Q&A this year, with Charlie guest-hosting along Syd and answering questions from young listeners, Shmanners has an episode and video all about emojis, and Wonderful! has a one-off return to Rose Buddies! If you're not a member yet and you wanna listen to all this great stuff, head on over to MaximumFun.org/Join and sign up at $5 or more a month! You'll get access to not just this year's Bonus Content, but all of the Bonus Content from every show, from every year we've done the Drive. There's a TAZ episode DM'ed by Matt Mercer, the Charlieverse episodes, the Prankee Doodle Dandy episode of MBMBaM, truly an abundance of s-tier goofs await!
Also we have so much other stuff planned for the Drive! We're gonna be streaming more or less daily on YouTube, starting with Griffin doing a Fuser DJ stream today at 10am ET, and then Justin and Sydnee streaming watching a buckwild Netflix movie, I Believe in Santa, around 1pm ET.
On top of all of that, we've set our own bonus goals for the Drive, starting with this: At 3,000 new & upgrading members, Fungalore will hear your wishes LIVE. What does that mean? That's such a good question. Only one way to find out! If you wanna see the rest of our goals, you can check 'em out here. If you want to stay up to date on everything we have going on this week, turn on notifications for our Instagram story, that's where we'll be posting all the time-sensitive stuff.
Last but not least, thank you. Truly, from the bottom of all of our hearts. Whether you can afford to join or not, y'all's support is the reason we all get to do this for a living, and it genuinely is a joy to get to spend our days making these goofy things in hopes of bringing a little levity to someone's day. Means the absolute fuckin' world to us. We hope you have an absolute blast during this Drive, you deserve it.

dead boy detectives but i've never watched it (read: 0% plot 100% gay summary)
[HI MAGGOTS IT'S 11:16 PM ON 6TH MAY HERE AND I'M ONLY NINETEEN FOR A LITTLE WHILE LONGER AND I'M GONNA DO MY BEST TO SAVE THIS AMAZING SHOW BECAUSE SO MANY OF YOU LOVE IT. BECAUSE OF THE HORRORS™ IN MY BRAIN (aka depresso) I HAVEN'T WATCHED IT AS SOON AS IT CAME OUT, BUT THAT MEANS I CAN MAKE THIS POST]
BUT ANYWAY, THANKS @anthropomorphique FOR THE IDEA, HERE'S WHAT I'VE FIGURED OUT, ABOUT DEAD BOY DETECTIVES:
There is dead gay repressed Edwardian twink named Edwin.
He has that autism rizz.
A cat king god (a cat who is a god? a god who is sometimes a cat? a god of cats? a god of kings? a king of cats? the cat of a king? the king of cat gods? the god of cat kings? WHAT IS HE IDK BUT HE'S A GAY LIL SLUT) wants to do the ol' hanky panky with him.
A lot of people want to do the ol' hanky panky with him. He be pullin' bitches.
Except for the bitch he's in love with, his best friend and soul partner, Charles.
Charles is full of Charm and Whimsy and Making Friends.
He has trauma.
(The previous point was obvious to me after learning point 6 but then I realised maybe I should be clear)
There's a... some kind of creature named Niko and she reads a lot of explicit gay manga.
She tries to use it to help Edwin out of his repression I think. I don't know if it works. Edwardian bitches do be repressed like that.
She has... a deadly parasite? That's a lesbian relationship?
Are lesbians deadly parasites? I do not know. I am too much in awe of lesbians to ask them.
The Cat King gives Edwin white lilies. Like I said, Edwin got that 'tism rizzm.
Niko and Edwin are weird besties.
CAITLIN REILLY IS IN THIS IDK WHO SHE PLAYS BUT SHE IS SUCH A GOOD ACTRESS I'VE BEEN A FAN OF HER FOR YEARS FROM YOUTUBE CAITLIN REILLY IS IN THIS *SCREAMS*
THIS IS PART OF THE SANDMAN UNIVERSE!! So @neil-gaiman is not the show's creator, but it is his universe and a bunch of his characters and he wrote a few scenes I think?? IDK SANDMAN FANS COME HELP ME.
Edwin goes to hell and Charles saves him? I think?
Death is very lovely.
OH THEY SOLVE MYSTERIES OF GHOSTS SO THEY CAN BE DEAD I FORGOT TO MENTION THE PREMISE OF THE SHOW HELP I'M SORRY I WAS SO FOCUSED ON THE GAY
EDWIN AND CHARLES LOVE EACH OTHER VERY MUCH
AND THEY HAVE... THE REST OF FOREVER TO FIGURE IT OUT?
UM THERE'S A PLOT I SWEAR I JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS I'VE JUST SEEN MAGGOTS SCREAMING ABOUT THE GAY
...GAY.
Okay so so so this show needs a second season but apparently Netflix's thinking of cancelling it because not enough people are streaming it (IT'S BARELY BEEN OUT A WEEK OR SOMETHING WTF??) so PLEASE GO WATCH IT EVERYONE WHO'S SEEN IT LOVES IT AND I CAN'T WAIT TO WATCH IT RAGH ANYWAY I LOVE YOU EITHER WAY HAVE THE LOVELIEST OF DAYS <3

Note
Keeping TADC on youtube after getting the Netflix deal was not only beyond considerate and showed so much loyalty and thanks to Glitch but it also adds to the viewership and didnt isolate any fans who dont have Netflix. Hiding your show behind a paywall does nothing but cut the number of fans, a certain someone could have thought of that when their dying show was put on a streaming service
Just goes to show that you can make good decisions in this kind of situation, and that it's not "JUST THE WAY THE INDUSTRY WORKS!"

Let's have a real talk about Michael Sheen's queer roles.
Miles Maitland (Bright Young Things, 2003)
Tumblr media
This is about 1930's pre-WWII London following a group of society's most strange and somewhat rebellious group. I have seen this movie I don't know how many times, perfect in so many ways. (David Tennant is in this movie too) You can stream this for free on Prime.
Joe (Gallowglass, 1993)
Tumblr media
This movie led me to believe something different than when I actually watched it. Joe is a foster kid who gets taken under the wing of a man, Sandor after he saves his life. It turns very narcissistic and hurtful very fast to Joe because he is the character's indebted servant. However, it's a three-part series available on YouTube, surprisingly enough.
Carlos (Nocturnal Animals, 2016)
Tumblr media
This movie is a psychological thriller about a woman who ends up confronting a very dark past. This role for Michael Sheen is more aesthetic than physical because he's a minor side character that married a woman. You can stream for free on Netflix.
Kenneth Williams (Kenneth Williams: Fantabulosa!, 2006)
Tumblr media
Surprisingly, this role was about the true story of Kenneth Williams, hugely successful comedy actor. They say he had "barely consummated homosexual deviances" however, come to find out, he's actually asexual. It was actually the first time I've seen ace rep especially in this generation of films. You can stream for free on Tubi.
Aziraphale (Good Omens, 2019-)
Tumblr media
This show has 2 seasons (we're all basically praying for a third) And Aziraphale is an agender queer angel along with Crowley, agender queer demon. With Biblical accuracies and inaccuracies alike, there's romances between certain angels, demons, and humans. No judgement here. Prime Original, guys.
I'd like to thank @julielilac for providing the original list, go check them out!
Also just to clarify, I have not seen every single one of Michael's characters (because I'm broke as shit) but I will be able to finish this list someday. To be continued.

Things I collect meme?
I'm like the WORST person for this because I actually don't collect any objects since I'm pretty itinerant. I have a base of ops, but I can fit everything I own into the back of a pickup and I like it that way.
But I am a bit of a digital hoarder so here we go:
Tumblr media
Things I Collect
BL screen shots
Tumblr friends
BL shows that I've rated 8/10 or higher + some other more obscure BLs that I like rewatching but aren't on streaming services (I have a portable backup drive that is actually just full of shows)
Currently, shit off Netflix (I'm about to close my account)
Deeply held opinions about inconsequential trashy media
Digital books, both fiction and non-fiction, that I never read
Travel size items, packing cubes and bags, the perfect small containers for exactly the right amount of everything
Similarly: Travel hacks
Podcasts about the most obscure shit ever, and also economics and data science
Failed romantic relationships
YouTube channels featuring cafes all over the world
YouTube shows about interior decorating, it's an alien world that interests me strangely. When I finally do settle down, my lighting and counter-top game will be epic
Fortunately for me: clients
Unfortunately for me: Apps on my phone (WHY SO MANY?)

Guysss i keep seeing spoilers of drs2p2 and I am like sooo mad like whyyyy.
Like i get it was a huge mistake or something but if you decide to watch it, which is fair because i know were all impatient and we want to see it, PLEASE DONT POST SPOILERS OR FANART UNTIL IT IS OFFICIALLY RELEASED ON OTHER STREAMING SERVICES!!
And i cant emphasize this enough. Some of us want to wait for the netflix and/or youtube release before watching so we can thoroughly support all the amazing people who spent time working on this show. Posting spoilers and illegal screen recordings is not cool, because it decreses hype for the official release, it lowers viewing rated on official services, and it decreases support to the lego team that gives them the right resources to continue making the show.
I genuinely am begging all of you not to post spoilers, teasers, fanart, or any fan content that isnt for the better of the creators and cast of the show until the official release on all services. I want to give as much support as possible to all the cast and crew of ninjago because they have consistently been giving us an amazing show for more than 12 years and I really hope this wont be the last time they do. Thanks guys for reading this long rant of mine, reblog and repost so everyone knows. Thank you so much!!

✧˚ · . things to do with your long distance little, written by a little for caregivers! ༉‧₊˚.
⇢ ˗ˏˋ more under the cut! ࿐ྂ
Tumblr media
₍.ˬ.₎ < before i get started, thanks for reading my post! it means a lot to me even if you don't reblog or like! >
1) watch tv / movies on RAVE! rave is an app available on most devices that sync up streaming services together. you can play virtually anything on Netflix, HBOmax, and more! they also have a youtube option for kid's shows that are on youtube!
2) send care packages! big or small, care packages can go a long way for a little. even if its just some candies and a letter or a whole new paci for them, they're sure to love getting it. and what kid doesn't like getting something in the mail?! 3) play online games together! lots of kid friendly games are free to play, like animal jam! and if you a little money to spare, games like animal crossing and stardew valley are great options! there's also plenty of kid's card games online. 4) download OurHome and create a long distance rewards system! whether it be watching their favorite show/movie, or buying them dinner, you can easily set up a way to earn these little rewards with OurHome! you can give simple tasks like reading, drinking water, etc. on OurHome that your little can tick off as they do, which earn them points!

'I've got to pinch myself': Paul Sun-Hyung Lee on playing Iroh in 'Avatar: The Last Airbender'
Presumably the people outside a local car dealership a couple of years ago who heard Paul Sun-Hyung Lee let out a “huge whoop” during a phone call with his agent didn't fully grasp the significance of that celebratory sound.
The Toronto actor beloved as the internet’s “Appa” thanks to “Kim’s Convenience” and a popular part of the “Star Wars” universe, too, was about to become the internet’s favourite uncle.
Lee had landed the role of Uncle Iroh in “Avatar: the Last Airbender,” Netflix’s much anticipated live-action reimagining of a well loved animated series (not to be confused with James Cameron’s “Avatar” films).
“Honestly, I have moments where I think I’ve got to pinch myself because, even as a youngster, I never would have believed that I could be a part of these things, because I never saw anybody who looked like me reflected in any of these shows,” the Korean Canadian actor said, reflecting on his roles in “Airbender” and the “Star Wars” spinoffs “The Mandalorian” and “Ahsoka,” in which he plays the popular Captain Carson Teva.
As Iroh in “Airbender,” Lee has stepped into the robes of another fan favourite character.
First, a bit of a primer: “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” which debuts Thursday, is about a 12-year-old boy, the “Avatar” of the title, on a quest to save the world from the rapacious Fire Nation, which has gone to war with the Earth, Water and Air peoples. Despite his youth, Avatar Aang (played by Vancouver actor Gordon Cormier) is a powerful “bender,” honing his ability to manipulate air, water, earth and fire.
Aang and his friends — Katara, a water bender (played by Indigenous Canadian Kiawentiio), and her brother, Sokka (American actor Ian Ousley) — are being hunted by fire bender Prince Zuko (American Dallas Liu), who’s accompanied by his wise and compassionate Uncle Iroh, himself a fire bender and a former Fire Nation general.
If that all sounds kind of geeky, well, that’s right up Lee’s alley.
The 51-year-old has well-established nerd bona fides as a fan of “Star Wars” and other science fiction (he shares his love of the genre on his Bitterasiandude Inc. YouTube channel). He caught up with the original “Avatar: The Last Airbender” (which aired on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008, then moved to Netflix) while he was still working on the CBC comedy “Kim’s Convenience” (2016-21), in which he played a South Korean immigrant who runs a convenience store in Toronto.
In 2018, as new fans were discovering “Kim’s” worldwide after the series moved to Netflix, the streaming giant announced its remake of “Airbender,” setting in motion Lee's ascent into another dream role.
“Almost immediately I got fan casted (as Iroh) by all these people on the internet,” Lee said in a Zoom interview. “I was very, very flattered, but I was doing ‘Kim’s.’”
A few years later, though, “Kim’s” had ended and Lee got an audition for what was billed as a basketball movie called “Blue Dawn,” as a coach who had come out of retirement to guide his nephew.
Although he’s “more of a baseball, hockey guy,” Lee taped the audition and then forgot about it, until a callback a couple of months later. Except now, the retired basketball coach Howard was named Iroh.
“There’s only one Iroh that I know of,” said Lee. “And so I remember thinking, ‘Oh my God, this is for “Avatar”’ … right away I got super nervous. The stakes went up and I really wanted this part.”
But, after doing a chemistry read with Liu and not hearing anything for a couple of weeks, Lee assumed he had missed out on the role, which is part of the lot of an actor … until his agent called just as Lee and his wife were about to sign a lease on a new vehicle.
“So I excused myself, leaving the salesman completely befuddled. I went outside and that’s when I learned that I landed the role. And immediately let out this huge whoop. I had forgotten that I was in a public area and there were lots of people outside, and they all suddenly looked at me and I said, ‘It’s OK. It’s good news. It’s great news.’”
There was one more hurdle to overcome, though.
“Airbender,” which shoots in Vancouver, overlapped Lee’s schedule for “The Mandalorian,” which films in Los Angeles. And playing Iroh meant shaving off the middle part of the moustache that Lee sports as Captain Teva.
“Luckily I was able to have my cake and eat it at the same time,” said Lee. “Lucasfilm was like, ‘Oh, we’ll just build him a little fake moustache to put on while he’s shooting (“The Mandalorian”).’”
Lee isn’t certain how familiar the producers of “Airbender” were with his work on “Kim’s Convenience” — it's an established fact that “Mandalorian” producer and director Dave Filoni was a “Kim’s” fan before he cast Lee — but he considers his latest job to be another of the many blessings accruing from the CBC series.
“‘Kim’s Convenience’ was such a wonderful launching pad for my career,” Lee said. “I mean, that show was kind of my coming out party in terms of the film and TV world.”
Lee, who was born in South Korea but immigrated to Canada with his parents when still an infant, struggled to find good film and TV roles as a young actor in the 1990s and early aughts.
After graduating from drama school at the University of Toronto, he did a lot of theatre work, but onscreen “I played a lot of doctors, a lot of store clerks, a lot of window dressing-type caricatures, not characters.”
And yet, he persisted.
Despite not seeing himself reflected in the television he devoured as a kid and from which he developed his love of storytelling, “I thought, well, heck, if there’s nobody (else Asian) out there, maybe there’s a shot for me to get in … that was kind of foolish thinking because maybe you’re the only one because a lot of people have tried and haven’t been able to get through. But I was just too stupid and too stubborn to quit, so just kept at it.”
Now Lee hopes to provide inspiration for the young Asian actors coming up behind him.
On the set of “Airbender,” which has many Asian actors in its cast, Lee became particularly close with Liu, the 22-year-old Chinese-Indonesian-American actor playing his beloved nephew. Just as Iroh is protective of Zuko, for whom he becomes a surrogate father, Lee said he wanted to nurture Liu.
“Every chance that I got to just sort of give him little pearls of wisdom based on my experiences … I couldn’t help but want to see him succeed,” Lee said. “This kid is a superstar,” he added.
Now that Lee himself is part of two much-loved pop culture franchises, “my cup runneth over,” but he still has entries on his acting bucket list.
“Not to sound greedy, but I’d love to do ‘Star Trek’ because that's filming right in our backyard. I’d love to do a ‘Ghostbusters.’ All those geeky playgrounds I never got a chance to play in. I want to be in a rom-com. I want to be in a Western, the genres that I grew up watching …
“But I’ll take it as it comes and I’m grateful for what I have. And if this is the only thing I ever do again I will be thankful for it because a lot of people don’t get these opportunities.”

'culture war' killed art criticism
Tumblr media
that's true for conservative political pundits who see 'wokeness' everywhere but also left-leaning ppl who judge a film like we judge a youtube video essay. a concrete example: Saltburn critiques, which boil down to 'the film looks good but i don't like the social message of it, so the film is rubbish actually'. film is a visual medium, the visual part is not a little extra. listen to podcast, if you think so. read books, if you want an essay about social mobility.
why do you watch a film if the visual aspect of it doesn't outweigh all the other aspects? like i said before, film criticism tends to focus on (over-)interpretation of the 'text' (cf scenario and political messages conveyed) nowadays. instead of adding context to our analysis of the film, the film becomes a pretext for mere proselytizing.
'everything is political' doesn't mean 'everything has political intent' or 'everything must confirm my own political ideas'
in the age of streaming, where films are consumed one after the other (e.g. the end credits haven't even finished before Netflix offers you the trailer for another film), Saltburn is one of the rare films that I've had the pleasure of watching again and i'll never thank Emerald Fennell enough for that.
to be bewitched by pretty images that move is nothing to be ashamed of, it's the essence of cinema, which was first and foremost an attraction. top-notch social analysis is the extra and not the other way round.
