absolutely agree with you on hopper’s daemon being a st bernard, that’s so accurate. curious about steve’s parents animals and steve’s daemon’s name choice! also, I’m not that familiar with the daemon universe, but it is considered weird for your daemon to be the same gender as you? since you added that extra part to will’s bit.

Hi Bug! Lol yeah Hopper so obviously a huge rescue dog. Very cuddly. Much protect. Also, as is par the course for me things got long, so more under the cut!

I'll admit I didn't look into Steve's parent's animals as much as some of them, and they're more based on my head canons than any actual canon references, since there's only, like, 2 lines about Steve's parents. Minks are mostly known for being used to make expensive, high quality, fur coats, while minks themselves are very territorial weasels-sque creatures. I chose it because really liked the idea of his dad being something that's seen as a status symbol, but is actually kind of an asshole. Orchid Mantises (manti? mantiss?) imitate orchid flowers, and are beautiful, delicate looking creatures - they're also some of the most aggressive and precise hunters out there. I like to head canon Steve's mom as highly focused on appearances but also secretly fairly cunning. Also, I feel as if her being a highly predatory insect sort of highlights she's probably not the most attentive of mothers.

I'll admit Steve's daemon name actually came out be trying things and it just sort of feeling right? But I do really like it after researching more. According to Wikipedia, Rebecca can mean "Moderator", To Tie, Noose, To Bind, Captivating, Strong Combatant, Hearty - all things I think describe Steve really well. Captivating, Strong Combatant, and Hearty I think are fairly obvious in canon and people have already talked about the emotional gymnastics Steve tends to do to cater to groups for Moderator to fit, but I also think To Tie works as well. I haven't run the numbers, but I'd bet Steve's probably one of the people who talks to the most other characters in the show? He's definitely in the most groups, with a different collection of people he's partnered with each season, and I think makes him sort of good link between most of the different teams that form each season, tying them all together. Also, in His Dark Materials (the series daemons come from) daemon names can vary widely from common names, to objects, to fantasy-esque conglomerations of syllables. I think the Harringtons probably fall into the first category, where good, all American, "normal" names are what they go with. Also, Bex as a nickname just sounds really sporty and peppy to me and I love that for him haha.

Also, yeah in the series daemons are usually the opposite gender of their humans (I guess non-binary peoples' daemons are also non-binary but in a somehow opposite way???? Haha, yeah the early 2000s YA novels unsurprisingly don't consider that). Daemons that are the same gender happen, but are rare enough that they're considered an aberration. I think it's hinted at that same gender daemons are associated with homosexuality, but I at least like to believe that it's just something that happens sometimes and the association is more along the lines of when people assume a boy is gay because he likes art. Either way, I feel like Will having a male daemon would really highlight how he's considered such a "freak" and also be one of the reasons people called him the f-word in season 1 (which i know was period accurate, but still, ooofff)

Most sexy, huh… Hmmm… I think… Su No! WAIT! Oh! I’ll take you VN side for this, because yes! When it comes to VNs, JJxUgajin from Omerta are canonically sexy! But that is simply because Ugajin is an actual slut to JJ! I love him so much~ 🩶 Their Drama CD is my go to when I want some “inspiration” for my fics… 😳🤗

Ship that you didn’t expect to ship but now do: 💓

Oh. OH! Don’t we all start like that?! Ah, but a ship I hadn’t anticipated and really hit me like a ton of bricks was SouHaru from Free!. Like, I already shipped MakoHaru and when Sousuke came into the picture, I didn’t feel like his cool character could really fit the others but— hhhnnnnn~ I saw a fanart and BAM! Instant OBSESSION!!! And then the more the story progressed and his character unfolded, the more I saw the greatness of this ship!!! *insert glorious burning mappet gif* I you haven’t watched Free!, do give it a chance! The characters are almost always half naked! 😉👍✨

This was the hardest ask, yet! And in the end I still didn’t manage to chose one ship for all categories… 😮‍💨 I really didn’t think it’d be this hard to separate them but it is! I love. loVE. LOVE! all my ships to an unhealthy degree and I rotate them in my head 24/7 all year round. And thank you for those of you sticking with me through my horrendous writer's block. Tried to keep reader as Neutral as possible to be inclusive. Summary: Jake Jensen comforts you after a minor panic. Ask Box: Open Masterlist

“Hey, Sugar Bumpkin,” Jake calls as he enters your shared home after his errand.  You hear the shuffle of grocery sacks as he closes the door, locking it.  ���They had your favorite strawberry ice cream,” he continues as he walks towards you, or at least towards where he left you on the couch.  “They were out of..... Hey,” he stops, and you could almost picture the confusion on his face as he looked around the living room, glasses slid down his nose, forehead adorably wrinkled.  “Where did you go, babe?”

You only sniffle from your hiding spot, but he’s on you like a bloodhound, quickly dropping his purchases to the coffee table.  

“Babe?” he calls again, this time heading down the hall to where you are.  “What’s going on?”

You don't even bother to look up at him as he stands in the doorway of the bathroom.  You wipe your face with your good hand, possibly the only good hand you have left.  This thought brings the tears back up as you curl your other arm tighter against your chest, keeping it carefully  cradled with your knees drawn up.  The fat tears you were crying while he was gone are suddenly back and you hide your face with your good hand.  

“Oh, shit,” Jake softly says, and you can almost hear the conversation in his head about how he was gone for maybe 20 minutes and he wasn’t sure what could possibly have gone wrong in that time.  You were happy on the couch when he left you, well drugged and happy. “Baby cakes,” he starts as he gets on his knees in front of you where you have yourself expertly wedged between the toilet and the shower, drawn in on yourself.  “What’s going on? What happened?”  

You just shake your head a little, sobbing into your hand as you continue to lament about your predicament.  You try to draw in a little breath, enough to start speaking.  “They are going to have to take my arm off,” you wail.  “Wait what?” He sounds very disoriented.  “Did the surgeon call while I was gone?”

You shake your head, the tears getting heavier, your breathing getting shallower.  “Gangrene,” is the only word you can push out between your lips. 

“Gangrene?” Jake echoes, bewilderment still in his voice. “You had surgery less than a week ago, babe.”  It is then he looks around the room and notices the bandages and gauze on the closed toilet lid.  Anti-everything creams open on the counter and around the sink.  Blood tinged water in the sink. 

You feel his massive hands brush over your upper arms as you continue to cry.  “It’s gonna be ok, my love.  I promise,” he shushes you, laying a kiss on your forehead for extra measure.  “Can you tell me what happened?”  

You sniffle and draw in a bigger breath, lifting your head to face him.  You see the look of concern on his face shift behind those owlish glasses.  Worry morphs into loving care as he tugs on the long sleeves of his shirt, pulling it over his hand as he wipes at your cheeks, attempting to clean up the tears.  “Can you tell me?” he asks again, softer this time as he settles back on his heels.  

You nod and untuck your arm from your chest and hold it out to him. He is careful to hold your forearm just right, knowing where the stitches are on your arm.  He rotates it enough to bring the site of your recent surgery into view.  The skin is a bit more irritated than it was last time he looked, and there might be a sight of blood around the one stitch where the knot is on the end.  The skin around it is puckered and appears to be a healthy healing color.  “Looks good, babe,” he admits.

You repeatedly shake your head and look up at him with pleading eyes, looking like a scared little child.  He searches your face for more, hopeful for another clue about what is going on and why you think the surgeon is going to amputate your arm.  After a moment of nothing, he sighs, running his thumb over your soft skin below the stitches, not over them.  Your skin feels normally warm, not abnormally hot.  It all seems ok to him.  

“I need you to use your words, love,” he finally concedes defeat. “I can’t figure this out on my own.”

Clearing your throat, you wipe at your cheeks with your own hand, blinking up at him.  “There’s... well, there was pus,” your voice wavers slightly but you continue.  “Right there.” Your shaking finger points at the stitch that’s got the tiny amount of blood around it.  

“And?”  Your boyfriend is infinitely patient, and god, you love him for that.   Especially when your brain gets tangled and messy like this.  

You sigh softly, now seeing you might have maybe, in the new light of someone else’s view, overreacted a teensy weensy bit.  Just a little.  Nothing too much. “Pus means infection,” you reason. “And infection is bad.”

Jake’s patient and handsome face seems to follow your logic.  When you stop, he fills in the blanks.  You saw the pus, and tried to clean it up as gently as you could, then debated the best course of action with all the bandages and creams in the bathroom while your brain tried to tell you the doctor was going to amputate your arm.  With a genuinely loving smile, he leans over and kisses your cheek softly, his stubble gently scratching your skin, making you hum softly as you lean a bit into his lips.  “Sweetpea,” he starts. “Pus isn’t always bad.  It just means your body is healing, doing its thing, white blood cells grouping together and....” he pauses, looking up at the ceiling as if the medical jargon he was looking for was written across the ugly popcorn ceiling.  “Well doing their thing.  And you’ll be fine. I promise.”  

“How’s your hand?” he asks, still holding your forearm with one hand while the other scoots under your palm, cradling it in his own hand. You find it oddly soothing to feel his fingertips gently touching your palm, your own fingers dangling against his palm.  He gently nudged your pinky finger with his thumb, your finger twitching in response, drawing a small smile from your lips.  “How’s the numbness?”  Your surgery was because you had numbness in your last two fingers of your hand that occasionally blossomed into unbearable pain.  You had a pinched nerve, which the doc fixed during a quick surgery a few days ago.

You nod and give him a little smile. “Better,” you allow.  Your fingers had feeling in them again, and not the excruciating kind.  

“Good,” Jake states, bringing his lips down to your ring and pinky finger for a quick kiss.  “How about I go make you a bowl of ice cream before it melts out of the box?  And I’ll clean up this mess?” He vaguely gestures around the bathroom as he gets to his feet.  Giving you that boyishly shy half smile of his, he reaches down offering you his hand.

Hiya again, Fan-Mans!

I have a lot of favorite characters and ships, and I’ll try to narrow down why I like a lot of them!

Aran has been rotating in my brain the moment I learned about his Wii counterpart! I’ve always gravitated towards crazy characters, and his character is charming in a “insane feral man” way.

This man has only seven bones in his body.

Glass Joe is one of my favorites for the exact opposite reason as Aran, he has that sopping wet kitten effect. But, I really like the implication that he’s been at the bottom for so many years but he never gives up. In my head, one day he really wants to be champion but naturally, at his age, he has a few fears and doubts. I see him as a naturally meek guy, but he can be sassy and stand up for himself. Not a total pushover like many would think.

I’m never really given much thought to these characters in my head, but I’m starting to get a soft spot for them!

Von Kaiser, Great Tiger, Don Flamenco, Little Mac, King Hippo, and Piston Hondo!

I like all of the characters, though! All of them shine through in a great way despite only having a little bit of lore and screen-time each game.

Now onto ships! ⛴️

Aran/Joe! 🥖🍀

I really like the idea of these guys together in a “these two aren’t so different.” way. I feel like they would have a rocky friendship in the beginning, and then slowly realize that they share a lot of the same fears about their careers and life as they get to know each other. Then that leads into the pining, where they try to separate themselves from each other to keep the other “safe” in their head, and then they realize that’s not exactly healthy and build their relationship up more until the first kiss. Huge small boyfriend / big boyfriend stuff in my mind haha.

Joe/Kaiser! 🕰️🥖

Not too much to say about this one, I just really like it! I think Kaiser would be the embarrassed flustered one while Joe is the big affectionate one. Just good vibes all around!

Aran/Don 🌹🍀

I really like the idea of these two being super intense together, being deeply in love but also being really competitive lol. Aran is the scary one, and Don is the sassy diva.

Don/Carmen 🌹🌸

How can I not mention Cardon? They’re so iconic! Don would do anything for his carmen, fight to the death in the ring and cry out his love for her. I feel like Carmen would be super sweet and just blush every time Don gushes about her, both inside and outside of his career. These two are just that lovey dovey couple you see everywhere, always together but never apart.

for the wip ask game: i think that i'm breaking form a bit here, but i'd be fascinated to hear about your process for the long fics, if you wanted to talk about it. how much do you have planned out in your head before you start? how do you maintain such consistency in them?

apologies right now for how long this got...

So I’ve been mulling this over for a while, trying to figure out how to answer it. I’ll go ahead and use DTSD as the example, since it’s the one currently living rent-free in my brain, but this probably applies to all my long-fic.

A lot of times when I get an idea and start rotating it in my head, I spend a fair amount of time just doing that. Trying to figure out what’s going on, where the story is going, what I want to do before the end. I usually have things I’ve envisioned I want to include. And then lines show up out of nowhere that I have to write down, and then a scene kind of forms around it. 

I start telling myself the story—but I can’t go too far, because if I know the ending, I lose momentum and probably won’t write it. At the same time, I fully expected to be at the next major plot point by now (this was supposed to be 80k, she wails) and I am not because first, there were other plot points that showed up, but more… I wanted to let things happen more organically. I could write you 3k of LLH and DFS fucking for the first time in 10 years, but it wouldn’t have been true to either of them (and I really, really needed LLH to attempt to seduce DFS in an alley and get interrupted, this has been living in my head since like November) (also sex scenes are the worst and I need so many words to get to the actual fucking, maybe this wasn’t a good example). (maybe a better example is that I had no plans for FDB to play the showcase originally and when I decided to do that I figured that there would be like 4 chapters between him signing up and him playing.) ( ha ha ha sob )

I do know what is happening further out—I know the backstory that I’ve been feeding you in dribs and drabs, I know the way that Shan Gudao and Jiao Liqiao are going to show back up. I am determined to have LLH and FDB dance at a club and DFS angrily stalk over and join them. I have a fair amount of the next big arc written down in disconnected pieces (why are the connect-y bits so hard?). So I guess the good news is, I do have a plan for DTSD, and I don’t write unhappy endings. But the ~bad~ news is, I don’t actually know what that happy ending is. I’m still feeling out what seems in character for the three of them. 

As for consistency—first, thanks very much for the compliment! Second, the fics I like best, the ones I come back to again and again, are the ones that take their time to get where they’re going because they really dig into their characters, and they let the characters breathe so that their actions make sense, they aren’t contrived for the plot. So a lot of it is me going, ok, but how would they get there? How would that character react? With a background as a child of privilege living in the real world, not fantasy jianghu China, how does FDB react to being told he can’t make music, when that’s fundamental to him? If Li Lianhua is planning on keeping the rhythms of his life and leaving town because it’s warm now and he has enough money, what would make him stay? (spoiler: it’s certainly not the two men who are half (fully?) in love with him.) If Di Feisheng is a well-known musician trying to make a comeback and his former bandmate turns stalker, how is he going to deal with it?

So I think that’s what keeps me going, and keeps it consistent—I don’t need to bend them into particular shapes because I’m not completely certain how they’ll look in the end, and I’m trying to see how they respond to what I throw at them, and stay true (or as true as I can manage) to my interpretation of the character in canon.

How long have you had your writing Tumblr/Writeblr? A fast and loose estimate is fine!

As in my bio this account was silent for years. I toke it back and I've been active about (counts....) : since may 2024?

What led you to create it? (take it back in my case)

I've been cursed with Banana Fish story so I landed to AO3 last year out of despair and started writing there.

Also AO3 posted mainly here, but I was still silent.

Then around april this year a lovely author (@the-golden-comet 💫💫💫) left a bunch of comments on my writing on AO3 and almost simultaneously followed me here 👀 👀 👀👀 👀 👀)

I got curious too, read and fallen in love with his work (ref below 👇 ) and interacted here more, so I met new people (again, ref below 👇 ) and here I am.

What’s your favorite thing about the Writeblr community?

Tips and advices, sharing experiences, sharing the fun, the snippets and other writings and characters. The quality and amount of good writing here is pretty amazing!

What’s one thing you’d like your mutuals to know about you?

Well, this might sound haughty but I'll take the risk. They probably know me as an enthusiastic reader, and I am, I tend to go wild with comments 😅

But I also get bored and snap out pretty easily, and probably end up being very selective. If I follow and stick to an author is that I really believe in them, I don't do half a way 💗

Is there anything you’d like to see more of on your dash?

I'm already seeing a lot that I love, mainly my mutuals. Then, of course, the more the better. One day I'll read it all........

Which Works-in-Progress (WIPs) or writing projects are you noodling about, lately?

I have one (big) wip that is living in my head since already one year.

I've worked on and off for several months but since a couple of weeks now I'm fully committed only on this one (My OC is actually glaring at me)

How long have you been working on them?

One year...👆👆👆 (it will take a while I'm a 🐌)

Do you remember what inspired them/what got you started?

Ashley Knox, my main OC, came in my brain, curly blond, blue eyes and scars and said : write about me!

There have been more or less subconscious inspirations from Banana Fish, Omar little from the Wire, past women as gang leadears and others.

How much time, in your best estimation, do you spend thinking about them?

A lot....which doesn't make me go faster in writing 🤣

When someone asks the dreaded, “What do you write about,” question, what do you usually say?

Very few not on line know....and they don't ask 🤣

I don't really have a gender neither. I would say I mix reality/existential/magic/healing in a sort of fiction.

I would say Ashley.....but it's not the perfect term actually.

Ashley and Amy. But it goes from moments to moments.

Do you ever cringe at them?

Until now not that much but I know I will....

How much control do you feel you have over your characters?  AKA, do they ever “write themselves,” refuse to cooperate, or do things you didn’t expect? To what degree? Are some less cooperative than others?

Same answer, for the moment they're relativeley nice.....

But I do struggle a lot until I don't feel it's right, they don't leave the grip so in a way they're already a pain in the ass.

Do you enjoy people asking questions about your characters? And do you have a preferred means of receiving said questions? For example, as Asks, as replies, as reblogs, as tag notes, as comments on AO3, etc.

I love it. Whatever way is ok.

It depends, sometimes it's someone that I see around for a few times and get curious. Sometimes it's interest at first sight and I give it a try. Quite a few are mutuals from mutuals.

What makes you decide against following?

If I cringe for some reason.....mostly vibes.

Do you interact with non-mutuals often?

I don't know about "often" but yes, then I love when they actually become mutuals.

For the character ask game: Kes + 1, 12, 20

Thank you so much for the ask!! (Ask game in question)

1. Why do you like or dislike this character?

Ok! So I'm a huge Kes fan, and I was initially drawn to her because she's got this little aura of joy, and you can't help but love her, which you can see in other character's interactions with her on the show. Any room she walks into instantly gets a little brighter and she's just so fundamentally kind and gentle and full of love.

So that's what initially drew me to her, but what hooked me, was that fact that the longer you watch, the more we learn about her, the more deeply strange she gets. We've got that fantastic scene in elogium where she eats all those fucking bugs with that deranged expression, and of course, my all time favorite, this one scene where the doctor tells Kes he has some autopsy reports for her to read because he knows she loves autopsies. This by the way, is NEVER brought up again which I think is a terrible loss, because what thing to say about a character and then never mention! What a fact!

So you've got this little elfish looking girl, who's still fundamentally kind and gentle, but now we also know "oh she's a bit of a freak!" and she's wicked smart, and then she learn, oh, she's got these terrifying powers at her core and actually she might not be as fundamentally gentle as we (the audience) or kes herself thought. And now Kes has to grapple with this, and she's still a deeply good and loving person at heart, but now she has to try a little harder to suppress these urges and that makes her fundamentally more interesting.

Also her relationships with Janeway and Tuvok and The Doctor all bring me so much joy. Janeway's love for her, and the way she smiles when Kes is around, the way she hugs her when she leaves just!! Rip me to pieces. And Tuvok's mentorship and quiet protection of her?? And that scene when the Doctor holds her in Twisted. Kes has 3 parents, and honestly all three of them think they're taking care of her, but they need her more than she needs them.

And what's kept me loving her, is in a way her missed potential. So much about Kes wasn't explored, so much was left unanswered, and getting to rotate her around in my head and think about all the things she could have been is so fun. I deeply wish she had been used more, because on paper she's such a fascinating, deeply weird character. And she was just starting to come into her own when we leave her. She's broken up with Neelix, she's making her own choices, and I want to imagine where that would have gone. (I have further thoughts on this, but this is already ridiculously long, so I will continue this in a different post)

Long story short, she's a lovable little weird girl, and I like weird little girls. She'd crawl around on all fours and make up weird stories at recess in fourth grade and I like that about her.

Also she reminds me of the "a little guy!" > "oh they're actually fucked up" meme.

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?

Well I LOVE the art where people make her look a little more bug like. With weird pupils and antennae and such. I love that, I definitely headcanon her looking a bit creepier like that.

I also headcanon her as a lesbian. Her whole relationship with Neelix baffles me. I honestly LOVE them as friends, they're so great when they're just silly best friends, but I cannot stand them as a couple. She's a gay girlie.

20. Which other character is the ideal best friend for this character, the amount of screentime they share doesn't matter?

SEVEN!! Seven!!! GAH! The missed potential! Pretty much a weirdgirls club with Seven, B'elanna, and Kes. Kes would have been the perfect person to help Seven reintegrate into society, because she's patient and kind, and she'd get a huge kick out of Seven's deadpan humor. I mean, the EMH is her best friend, she's very good at dealing with people who others consider hard to get along with.

Kes wouldn't make Seven feel bad about the way she is, or try to pressure her to conform to what she wants from Seven. He starts crushing on the butler when he fixes his cosplay; Levi had ordered it and it showed up damaged and ripped. Barbatos got around to fixing it before Levi could, and he hadn't even asked him to do so

It's just the idea of that Barb is so cool. Like cooler than anyone that Levi knows

He can bake, sew, he knows curses and spells, has wisdom on just about anything and everything--he's the cool type in dating sims. A kuudere, if you will, but even cooler

I don't think Levi has ever had a real crush on someone before. like don't get me wrong he has so many characters from his games and anime that he would do just about anything for, but I don't think he's really harbored those feelings for someone that is not in a computer screen

i like to think levi would then be so obvious about his crush on the butler, while the thinks he's being cool about it. everyone in a five mile radius knows about it lol

and ofc barbatos knows about it. like how could he not? levi isn't exactly secretive about it. the demon started to come over a lot more and try to find excuses to hang out with the butler

Barb humored him tho, because he did find him kinda cute. but more like in a way one would feel towards a sopping wet cat they found on the side of the street. he found it funny that levi was at times even willing to help him with things like baking or tending to the gardens, even when he wasn't good at either of those things

At some point it changed, though. Barbatos isn't sure when, but there is a point where it changes from him humoring Levi for the fun of it and into enjoying the other's company

Such an odd pair, tbh. They both know it but they are good for each other me thinks

Like??? As I've discussed Barb starts to genuinely enjoy Lev's company. He starts to laugh and smile more, acting less stoic even when Levi wasn't around

because!!! because Barb is open to learning about Levi's interests. Levi helps him interact kitchen (even though he isn't the best at baking) and he tends to the garden with him (even though he isn't all that knowledgeable on plants), and seeing as levi indulges in his hobbies, why not enjoy is free time in what levi likes?

Besides, levi just looks so happy when barb offers to play a game or watch an anime with him. and yeah barb fucking sucks ass at the games and has to politely ask levi to stop pausing on each frame of the episode in order to get through it all, but its the quality time together that counts

like again levi isn't able to keep his crush secret at all so i imagine all his brothers (sans lucifer) try and help him out. like they drop heavy hints towards barb about how levi is interested in him while levi fights off the urge to call lotan out of sheer embarrassment in order to get them to stop

like. i am sure diavolo would support it and would be extremely happy for barbatos that he found someone that makes him happy. but lucifer? he is speaking through gritted teeth of how happy he is for levi. he is definitely fine about this decision because his brother is a grown demon and can make his own decisions but he will be processing his feelings with a bottle or two (or three) of demonous later that night

But also, your response has me straying ever closer to the brink of insanity, because now I can’t stop thinking about how MK and Macaque in S2E7 kind of parallel Azure and MK in S4E13-14.

It’s not a perfect parallel, of course, but… 

A character who really, really wants to be a hero and help others ends up isolating themself from the people who care about them most and hurting/endangering those dearest to them, as well as the world in general, as they pursue more power (MK in S2E6-7, Azure in S4E12-14). A ‘hero’ who doesn’t realize their slowly becoming someone that, if they were to look at themselves from the outside, they would never call a hero. 

Another character, who is technically their enemy but doesn't really want the ‘hero’ to go down a self-destructive path and sees their genuine desire to do good, throwing every ounce of flawed reasoning and self reassurance the ‘hero’ has ever tried to use right back in their face. Pointing out every hypocrisy, every step taken towards becoming something, everything, the ‘hero’ doesn’t want to be. 

A ‘hero’ getting a reality check in the form of an ass beating from someone significantly stronger than them while said stronger being points out the mistakes the ‘hero’ doesn't realize they’re making. And this ass beating happens while the ‘hero’ is completely separated from their friends, alone with nobody but their enemy. *slowly rotates “It’s scary being alone” around in my head*

“In the darkness, the Warrior was forgotten by the Hero''. All of the isolating MK does in S2E6-7, unintentionally leaving his friends alone and vulnerable to the kidnapping vs S4E13 Azure nearly hitting Yellowtusk with the scroll while attacking MK and SWK. Bonus points for the snack area MK goes to having much better lighting and being above the theater where he leaves his friends, and Azure being well lit from his place high in the sky while Yellowtusk is on the ground and shaded by the forest. Bonus bonus points for an ‘enemy’ being the one to save the ‘hero’s friends, not the ‘hero’ himself. Macaque’s the one that broke the lamp and Tang had to shield Yellowtusk from Azure’s barrage. 

And don't even get me started on how Wukong fits into all this.

Then prove it” something something the parallels between MK and Macaque are driving me insane, and I’m starting to realize that Shadow Play might be my favorite S2 episode. So with Tang being the one to save Yellowtusk in 4x13 and Macaque being the one to save Mei, Pigsy, and Tang in 2x07, there's also the Lady Bone Demon being the one to save Macaque from death—rather than Wukong, whose whole motivation for power was to protect the people he cares about. The delicious irony.

We can even take this another step further and point to the Embrace Your Destiny special, where Wukong leaves MK and then gets possessed. Possessed Wukong then hurts MK and Macaque is the one who has to save him. Look at this parallel here for more fun!

I think I am genuinely sick about Your Fantasy Masks au.

i've read great fics before (hell, pnpt and Septic heros are some of my top fics ever) but i am so not normal about FM.

Unfortanetly It's not possible for me to convey how much I love a 200k word fic (and still going!!!) by discussing each chapter, but GOD. This fic rocks.

The dynamics you build between the characters and the interactions they have are just fantasitc. I like how (in all your fics but especially FM) you give time for bonding scenes and let the reader see how the characters bond together.

Marvin, Jackie and Henrik are awesome. I adore their backstory and just the 3 of them together are so fun to read. Jackie and Marvin teasing Henrik over Vsevna is wonderful (!!!!They're courting!! <- is that the right word?)

Side note: One of my favourite scenes (or scene that has stuck with me) Is Jackie and Marvin apologising to each other. He did a shit job at it but I'm glad that they forgave each other

Jameson!! I like how he joined the main cast by being yoinked by Chase. I feel bad for him -being trapped by the king could not of been a fun experience. But! I like how you've developed his character. In the beginning he was very scared (rightfully so) and doubted he could do anything. Now in latter chapters, he's learning how to be his own person again after being stuck with the king + starting to be brave (my mind immediately goes to hiding the masks under the floor and trying to shield his mind from The king).

And Chase!! He's such a good character I love him. First: Him and his family <333 We don't see much of them but I love them (also Stacia!! She very cool. Can't wait to see Chase (hopefully) reunite with them after they've stopped being enchanted the the enchanter. And Amy and Quinten!! Can't wait to see more of them). I also like how Chase just knows a lot of stories (that end up being relevant to figuring stuff out). I just think it's really cool.

And the king/Jack??? Oh no he's locked in a well. So the king is being possesed?? thats so cool. I can't wait to see how the plot progresses and if Jameson's oracle about Chase will come true.

On a final note, I just really love the masks. Your world building for this Au is insane but I just really like the masks. I like how everyone gets to choose an animal and the symbols that represent the roles.

Okay that's only the main(ish) characters but I need to finish this ask off otherwise I might just start screaming and stop making any sense.

📚 A song or album you could write a term paper on

I really want a chance to dive into this album head first. It's one of my offline downloads because it's so great: it's like being told an old story that you know and remember, but you pick up a new detail every time (rumor has it Greendale II is in the works?? hell yeah!) Sure, it's basic blues changes and a couple cliches but I think there is so much there. There's a lot of wisdom in these lines, themes of family, the right to privacy, and environmental justice that resonate BIG TIME with me, and reflections on society that could easily fill an essay. My prediction for 2023: expect to see it become a future album of the month. However, unlike a tumblr post, the good thing about a term paper is there's no character limit ;)

📣 A lyric that feels like it is specifically calling you out

I have a whole entire post of these nearly ready to go, but this one felt like the right answer today. I remember considering this lyric and realizing my desire to listen to anyone else was starting to go away. Why bother, when someone can make you feel so understood? He gets it. He always gets it. Feeling competent is so easily replaced by feeling inadequate, fullness in your soul replaced by a hollowed out heart, feeling beautiful and free replaced by feeling fundamentally unlovable. Somehow you get over all that and soldier on, until it starts to crack again and it all pours out and you have to tear at it for a minute before you bother to clean it up and put it back away. Sometimes I feel like I'll never get out of this cycle as long as I live, and it is out of control. Who could ever want someone like that??

🔎 A song you can’t stop analyzing

(Pretend to be surprised here!) This song demands analysis. In fact, maybe THIS should have been my term paper....

First of all, while the album version doesn't ever double back on itself, I absolutely love how this one cycles back around to repeat the opening bars. It gives the song a circuitous feeling, just like the seasons change and fade into one another before they start all over again. You can hear it on repeat forever this way: the unending flow of time. Why it made it back into the rotation 8 years after its release isn't totally obvious, but this performance is dedicated to president-elect Jimmy Carter. I guess it's easy to imagine how much joy and relief might have been in the hearts of the receiving audience, after we experienced something likely similar just two years ago.

It's introduced as "kind of a quiet song," but once Neil hits those descending notes around 1:40 in, it's anything but. You can feel the energy in every strike of the strings, every note that he wrangles up and lets loose in a vocal style much more like a wail than the whisper on 1968's version. Alone and unencumbered by overdubs, he sings along with parts played previously by instruments, and it feels so honest and raw. Whatever anxious energy this song attempts to diffuse is palpable, and when the audience can't keep quiet about it long enough to listen, his observation on the truth in these lyrics rings out as disappointed and disillusioned but committed to conveying the message anyway. How many times do we have to hear something like this before we stop and reconsider what's going on?

Well hello, my friend :D So good of you to ask! And thank you for including a link back to the game. It's an awesome set of questions!

I did already answer 12 here, so I'm going to behave as a corvid might for a second and twist the question a little bit. Instead, I'm going to talk about what I take away from the fic writing process. That'll be below the cut.

Without further ado, some answers :D

5. How do you decide how long your fics/chapters will be? Do you have a word count goal?

This is a good one! I am not worrying about word count on this project, merely celebrating milestones. I tagged it as a longfic, and a longfic it shall be. I just wanna write until the story's done without worrying. I always worry about a million things generally speaking, so this time -- not so much. It'll likely be big fantasy epic novel length project by the time I get through it, and that suits me just fine.

Chapter wise, I do try to keep things below 9k words as often as possible. Ideally, I feel the pacing/flow of a chapter is best between 5 and 7k words. Some are shorter. I do have flash forward chapters which are generally much shorter purposefully than most of my others as a sort of break. This isn't a rule set in stone, however.

12. (Revised) What do you hope to take away from this work?

I talked a tiny bit about this here, but to expand on the notion -- With this project specifically, I want to prove to myself how much I am capable of as a writer and as a creative. I have left an old fic up on my profile which was clunky and broken and never finished. I have tons of unfinished stories in my google drive and my ehds scattered in my things irl. And lots of older finished works, too, for that matter. All of it is part of the journey, but I'd forgotten.

For a long time, I think I cared too much about being a "good writer" that I couldn't carry the pressure anymore under the weight of everything else I was going through. When you're so deep in that kind of mindset, it's tough to see past it. I needed help, and got it, and then decided when I was feeling like things were starting to improve that I no longer wanted to be the writer who couldn't write.

I picked fic as a low stakes project, one I didn't necessarily have to tie to my other screennames or even my professional/actual name or share at all if I didn't want to -- all with the goal of simply finishing a story no matter where it took me. Sharing the story and my love for this fandom has found me in the midst of other writers and artists whose work I cheerlead as loudly as I can, and we support each other now where before I'd been mostly silently giving in to writer's block and other things. I am beyond grateful for this. <3 It does help immensely to have friends who just get it on so many levels.

So what do I hope to take away from this project? That I can do this, and I always could. And that I can keep going.

15. What is one question you wish someone would ask you about this work? Ask it and answer it.

THIS IS SO OPEN ENDED!! How do I do this without spoilers? URGH. Okay. How about this?

How would this story have changed if it was simply though the eyes of the protagonist and not a rotating POV structure?

I think that if Nyenna was the only voice telling the story of how she'd become this legendary hero, we'd be so close in her thoughts and in her head, we'd not be able to understand the motives of the other characters who'd interact with her. She does a lot of selfish things, as we know from what's posted so far. She has a sort of filter of expectation over how she proceeds through her quest and through the world. She's convinced things have once again been taken from her. She holds a lot of anxiety in her head, even if she's attempting to do what needs to be done. There's a constant battle with indecision.

I think without the other points of view, we'd only have a limited picture of who she is, and who she's capable of becoming. We'd also have the drudgery of once again 'reading' Skyrim's main quest solely through the eyes of the Last Dragonborn. We've done this already, for the most part, even if it's been awhile.

I think if it was just Nyenna's perspective, at least in the way that I'm currently telling this story, we'd just miss out on the gems of other characters observing this legend kind of becoming real and walking into her power. Because, honestly, we don't get many opinions in game other than "Wow, cool. Okay do some quests for me then?" (: I think it's just interesting to have her friends and those who love her see the stakes of the quest and see the toll it takes on her. Their opinions are what breathes fresh life into the familiar tale, I think. Or at least, I hope it's doing that. (:

I like those two asks a lot! I've been waiting for someone to ask me about it for ages. Thank you!

First, about my MBTI. I am one pretty solid INTJ, I have a tendency to lean towards ENTJ in certain aspects tho. (As a little trivia on the side: I'm interested in MBTI and so have been researching functions etc. for quite some time now)

What got me into IE?

Simple. My brother. Summer 2018, he was always watching that annoying soccer show on TV at our grandparents' house, always asking me to come join him. And you know what? One day, I did, and it was one of the best decisions throughout my entire life. The show (only the first season back then) grew onto me rapidly, especially its lovable characters. Heck, IE had me in such a chokehold that I even played soccer with my brother bc of it. At the very beginning, Afuro was living in my head rent-free. He specifically helped me through some very rough times and I will never forget that. He will always be dear to my heart. I did get "out of" IE at some point for reasons, but I always wound up coming back to it cause turns out, no other franchise has ever quite given me as much comfort as this one. Across the last few years, I've been always returning to it with my thoughts whenever it got especially bad. I'm glad I managed to properly come back to it and have it be a big part of my everyday life (hyperfixation be damned (very lovingly)).

Now, imo, Chrono Stone deserves a honorary mention. The CS game (and later the anime) made me feel approximately ten times better than the rest of IE, and that's something. Long story short, I picked up the game from the store the first time I was into IE right after I had done research and learned that this franchise is actually based on games. There was no other game there, so I thougt this would do, too. Then I didn't touch it until 2021. The reason I started playing it was that I desperately needed to escape reality and CS succeeded at distracting me excellently. Coming home in the evening to open my Nintendo was the single highlight of my day.

How did I become insane over Sarufei?

Good question, anon. I cannot really pinpoint the moment it happened, but I can tell you it was pretty quick. Their first bits together already caught my attention in the most brain-tickling way possible, like this one:

The CS manga panel where they let Saryuu cry after he lost and Fei reassures him played into that too (I bought the manga solely for that, but turns out it was overall good). I could go on and on about their psychological aspects that spoke to me right off the bat, but I'll spare you that. Before I knew it, I was trying to search out content of them at 3 am on a week day (good content of them is pretty hard to come by with, in my experience at least). My head was really really really full of them, as it is now as well. They're pretty much the reason I picked up drawing & content creating again after years. The first thing I did after I finished playing CS was draw them and create a social media account so I can post it, so I can find someone to talk about them to. I had to channel how unhinged I'm over them somehow. They're also the reason I still keep on drawing. They make so fucking ill and I'm rotating them in my head at all times.

In conclusion, thanks for letting me go wild through text although this is by far not the best thing I've ever written

Spidernote was a fanfiction I wrote in middle school about live action light turner, Peter Parker, and regular light yagami and Zac Efron going to high school together. I’m not sure why or how it started. It was supposed to be this joke or prank or smth on my friend but idk how???? Lmao. But I grew too starched to the characters and they became near unrecognizable from any source material and I’ve been rotating them in my head for years like a little eternal microwave plate.

Leon and Lottie

This relationship is a bit iffy but I believe I still did alright haha.

They look very similar and they’re both very extroverted people.

But I also enjoy the alliteration here, both focus on L.

Saying Lo and Lee together brings to mind the ideas of Nabokov’s Lolita (and his use of ‘master hand’ throughout is something I’d want to mimic, to make the artist intrinsic to the work) (sorry im just ramblinfnffdhdh)

Oh! Their sounds are also mirrors here as well!!! Leon (eee-oh) and Lottie (oh-eee) (although hers is more of an ah/aw)

The main focus though is on the double L, they’re connected. They’re similar.

Leon and Agnus

Agnus may seem like the odd one out of the bunch here and she very much is. She’s been separated from reality/the rest of the world on and off again the past few years and is very different from others.

But my favorite thing here is this:

Leon means Lion but Agnus means Lamb. Like ISNT THAT SO COOL!!!!!!! I could go into their dynamic and how that relates but aghheheh

Agnus and Lo

Charlotte is actually a diminutive of Charles and means "free man" and "petite"

The focus here is on petite. Lottie is obsessed with her self presentation and her execution of femininity. She feels inadequate as a woman. Agnus is the opposite and has lost her ability to truly care about anything. The idea of being little/small is something that drives Lo a lot in her search to be the perfect woman. Agnus represents pureness and chastity (lamb symbolism as well as name meaning). Anyways i could write a lot here about the two views and performances on/of feminity and actually how el and Leon execute masculinity differently and how that’s a connecting point between them and aghhahhh)

elliot did not grow up in a stable environment. his parents weren't exactly poor but they aren't like rich. he lives with his mom and her brother so his uncle but they weren't super stabel because his father died in military service when he was young. he grew up in a not great neighborhood. part of the military service is like elliot's grandparents were immigrants from china i still have to flesh out stuff. it was about the idea he had to earn his place in the united states...anywayz he has like really messed up views on masculinity because his father died "bravely" in combat and his mother and uncle had really high expectations and he just never was that good at school and his uncle never liked that he was so weak and frail. he didn't have the best constitution. as a kid he'd get sick a lot and not interract with others. he felt like he had to fend for himself a lot growing up and constantly worried about being part of other's lives but could not find stability. he learned to shut himself up. to suck things up. one very kdfjdlskfjsdf okay sorry like words cant rn. there was an extremely formative experience he had when he was younger of going into a convenience store gas station place and was upset and anyways a gunman bust in and he was held up (along with everyone else in the store) and he froze up, he started to cry and he gave his money to the guy ebcause he was so scared. and his uncle was not happy and bad stuff happened sorry this makes me sound so dumb and lame im like "erm i have such ocol charactersz" but theyerelrkelkh

anyeays ermm he was physically abused and traumatized but felt so insecure about not being brave like those around him, not protecting himself. his whole life he was called not a real man, he wasn't brave enough or strong enough. he's seen people hurt people he liked, people he had once liked hurt him. the earth hurt too much. he is like one of those cynical edgy teenage boys who's not exactly an incel but like you know the vobeim talking about? he hates himself. he feels like hes not enough and is constantly suffering under this toxic idea of masculinity and projecting an image of strength despite being scared. but he projects all of this insecurity outward. he can't trust people. he sees any kindness as faking he sees niceness as all for a manipulative reason and he projects it as like violence sometiems like he genuinely ahas thought about killing people but is too much of a "coward" to actually do it. He’s not a great person but he’s caught in this constant spiral.

erm but anywayz its going to utilize a lot of the techniques established by nabokov in lolita and marquez in 100 yrs of solitude. these are the characters, but its kind of like a story about the individual who would write this. interlaced throughout is the idea of writing, the impossibility of what's written. these are characters in a story (not going completely into brecht's Verfremdungseffekt but definitely pulling attention into how the ideas and temperments of an individual influence the work.) how the ideas of story is magic, how storytellers take part in stories and how audiences take part of them. this is actually very similar to some of the topics addressed by ryukishi in the no naku koro ni (wtc) series especially in umineko. and spidernotes like ties into this idea of identity in story...which retroactively its just...really cool....spider (weaving webs, creation, the tangled and complex nature of the self) and notes (stories, ideas, writing) the transfixing of the soul into the written form...like. like all of the characters have a piece of me (me as in the personnae of an author, as in the narrator in a sense, even if me isn't the narrator) i as a creator and fundamentally tied to this. this may seem in contradiction to barthes "le mort d'author" (the death of the author) and his post-structuralist ideas to connect my work so intrinsically with my life, but i disagree. i find lolita, for example, to be an extremely post-modernist work. they are ideas that can be interpreted beyond their logical symbols. the story is not without this ability for interpretation, like that,, it's about inrerpretation and kdjfkdjfh the mutability of peoprkerek. though i do need to look bsck on the ideas of literary theory as posited by the framework fathers of modernism,,cannot remember his name. i believe it was richard. in a sense i wonder if brecht would think in a more modernist perspective rather than postmodernist because the initial language of symbols (as that is what modernims is based on) would be like bsed on the dichotomy of theatre vs life. like the idea of modernism is very interesting, especially, liek the dichotomiy sorry OFF TOPIC OF MY OWN RANT.

2. Where do you find inspiration for new ideas

Honestly, it varies a lot. Sometimes from dreams, though usually for fic its a thread in some fandom discussion. GoS started with exploring a thread of people who wanted a unified timeline after the original split was announced in 2012, and MoaH was from a discussion on BOTW trial/dungeon design. And then I kept pulling the thread until it became a plot.

9. What do you do when writing becomes difficult? (maybe a lack of inspiration or writers block)

Habit.

I had to confront this big time this past month recovering from the flu, because here was the double edged sword: if I didn't write, I was kicking myself for not being productive, and if I did write, I was burning my brain out and not actually enjoying the process. Every other time I've been confronted with this problem, I ended up going on hiatus, which I don't like because they would go on so long. And there's a real conversation I'm starting to have with myself about my self-worth and productivity, but we're working on it. But the point was, I made a system to compromise where I'm currently at and people to support me on it (chiefly, my partner, though the Expanding Hyrule community is really building to meet part of this too).

The solution I'm finding now is habit, but it's not the same habit. I'm applying the things I did to keep my Duolingo streak for four years (which I still miss, but they started using AI so fuck that). And that's to have different goals depending on where I'm at.

If I'm not doing well, in whatever way, I have a writing maximum of ~400 words (give or take a finished sentence). The goal of this is not to write a bunch, it's to write at all. It's to prove I can maintain a habit and get back to it when I feel better. And then when I am feeling better, or generally in a good head space, that switches to a 400 word minimum in the day. The 400 word as a metric is specifically based on Terry Pratchett's daily writing goal. And so far, it's working. I'm getting back to my previous pace of a chapter a day.

It's also important for me to engage in other media outside of what I'm working on. Low inspiration usually means there's not enough ideas going in, which means I need to engage with other stories than my own, and outside of whatever fandom that might be in if it's fic. So subbing in other sources of inspiration is a key to restoring my natural sources. Right now, I've finally at a chance to watch Vox Machina and I'm playing through Ghost of Tsushima, very good additions to the rotation of writing sprints.

It's a work in progress, but it's important to be flexible in building answers. And it's ok to accept to yourself that you can write/draw/make uninspired. Just a little bit to flex the muscle helps, but it doesn't have to be groundbreaking every day (and it likely won't be).

18. How would you describe your style? (Character/emotion/action-driven,

I have a hard time with this one, but I'm going to say action-driven first because I know I rush my openings. I like to get to the plot. I write at a lower reading level but about more adult topics/lens because I believe we need to be making a better effort to make fiction, particularly fantasy, accessible again. I lean for big plots and bigger casts, and I very rarely know which trope to properly put on shit because I like poking them too much.

As of the MoaH chapter to going out today (Oct 15), 253,730.

22. What scene in MoaH took the longest to write? What was difficult about it?

Oh boy, there's a technical answer to this and there's a real answer this. Also hard, because neither of them are out yet.

There's a scene in book 2 that's the culmination of a character arc that was very important to me to get tonally right, because I don't want Link's influence on it to be about him or to reach as a vein of hero complex on his part, but it was important for me to impress on the readers that most identify with MoaH Link the impact they can have by being good allies to people, about learning how they can protect people the way Link is in the story without centering themselves. I don't know if I got it right, but I hope I got close for the first pass.

Technically though, there's a chapter with an avalanche, also in book 2, and despite being pretty high octane, it took like five days to write because I was dying of the flu.
