Ranty rant below the cut with a bunch of grammar mistakes cuz I’m writing this on my phone 😁

I get a KICK out of all the “moonlight goddess Cathrine mcGoraPakora (/ref) healing chakra yoga”s of the world but really sometimes the way people practice ‘yoga’ can just be really insulting. I’m not talking about just practicing the asanas (poses), which many people do: it’s wonderful that these poses help relieve you of physical pain and clear your mind, which is what yoga is meant for on its most basic level. I’m talking about ‘beer yoga’ and whatever that is absolutely not the ancient Vedic spiritual practices that are so cherished in Hindu households.

at its core, yoga is Hindu. This does not mean you need to be Hindu to practice it! Yoga just teaches the Hindu core values, such as patience, tolerance, acceptance, etc. this is why, if you really want to learn yoga to better yourself in the way it was intended, you should learn from real yogis who have devoted so much of their lives to learning and spreading knowledge. ‘Yoga’ preached by people who cant even be bothered to pronounce the words right is bound to withhold so much of the important information that is so vital to becoming your best self through dharmic practices.

Also the whole concept of ‘chakras’ and ‘dharma’ and ‘karma’ that are so sensationalised aren’t even taught how they are supposed to. I’m sure you’ve heard the word ‘karma’ before, likely ‘chakra’, and less well known ‘dharma.’ What if I told you that you probably haven’t heard any of these words pronounced the right way before? It just feels weird to see people showcasing ‘yoga’ as some ploy to get you to buy crystals rather than the culture that brought your family peace of mind.

karma is the idea that your actions + morals in one life will reflect on you in your next life. If you hurt someone in one life, you will be hurt in your next life. The person who hurts you in your next life will be hurt in their next life, and so the cycle continues. One way to achieve your soul’s peace (moksha—reuniting with the creator god Bramha and breaking the cycle of reincarnation) is not to let karma affect you. To not hurt anybody in your life, even if you are hurt yourself. To not feel vengeance or wish to exact wrath upon others or yourself. It’s a beautiful discipline, and it teaches tolerance, as well as reveals how god is not really a controller, but a state of divinity that brings you peace to reunite with. I’m sure you understand how hearing the visceral meaning of such a venerated concept being twisted can feel insulting.

also don’t even get me started on healing crystals man. Obviously if you like them and really believe they’re doing something for you then that’s wonderful, but please don’t call it yoga, Hindu mythology and beliefs don’t say anything about rocks.

in the end, this isn’t just any Hindu ranting about cultural appropriation: a value of Hinduism is not to be personally bothered by what other people do. This is only advice. We are only trying to tell you that yoga, real yoga, is a wonderful and eye opening practice. So many of the teachings that make yoga what it is are lost in translation/westernification. Yogis are known to be very powerful and use their power to help others, which they only achieved through years and years of discipline and sacrifice. To hear it butchered so much into becoming an object of ridicule (eg. “yoga hippies, healing crystals”) just makes me sad to know that people who really want to learn and better themselves likely won’t, because they’re being fed misinformation.

👏Summary messages👏:

if you want to learn real yoga, that is known to do wonders for the human body and mind, you should learn from real yogis (there are plenty!) and not ‘yoga healing chakras evil eye’ on YouTube who will likely let the core teachings of yoga be lost in translation.

if the asanas (poses) are helping you physically and make you feel peaceful, do them!! That’s what yoga is meant for at its core! Don’t be worried about appropriating cause most of us don’t care about that, we’re just clarifying that that’s not what yoga is, it’s something else entirely, and it feels weird to hear it being treated like the ancient principles we grew up hearing.

yoga is good for you and I recommend it 👍

healing crystals are a capitalist ploy that utilises religion to get you to buy meaningless things so the government can steal your spleen
