This might be an odd way to answer a question in the tags of a post, but yes, Hoid is a more condescending narrator in Yumi!

I believe this is actually intentional, Hoid is generally described as condescending and frustrating by characters in the Cosmere (this is why I made that post, because seeing him have the same effect on IRL people is HILARIOUS)

But a review of a book is the review of the reader's experience, there are a lot of reasons someone might have a terrible time with a condescending narrator. It's good that these people expressed their opinions and shared their experience so If someone also dislikes that kind of narration they can make the informed decision not to read the book! (Or read it later)

I am so glad to see so many new people start reading BS's books, Tress was a great read and it warms my heart to see it get so much love.

Tldr: Hoid's rank attitude is intentional, and not everyone's cup of tea.

LOLLLLL that’s actually hilarious Hoid is worse in Yumi!! Ok, that makes sense then. It is good to know the reader’s honest thoughts because — yeah if he is that bad, it makes sense they would be mad about it! And it’s good to warn other readers so they don’t have a frustrating time too! I just feel bad that some assume the narrator = the author, which is what it sounds like even though they know Hoid is a separate narrator. While I’m SUPER new to the scene, I guess I just had such a great time with my reading experience on Tress, I feel bad that some of these reviews sound like they won’t try any of his other books because they assume it’ll be the same way. But — alas, that’s how it goes sometimes! I went in with the assumption the “secret projects” were likely different from his other books (I think Tress’s author’s note makes that clear), but I looked at Yumi’s note and it doesn’t have the same clarity — so I can see how that can be confusing for new readers who happened to upon Yumi and the Nightmare Painter first!

I’m super excited to get into more Cosmere novels and actually start Yumi — though, unlike these reviewers, I know what I’m in for with Hoid!

Xael is so interesting . . . what I think of your newest little guy is that I love him but what my ocs would think of him . . . oh lawd . . .

Nyx probably wouldn't ever meet him? But if they ever did meet, I can see Nyx really enjoying Xael's company, because they both enjoy mechanics/technology and neither really enjoy performing/singing.

Nausi is in awe of Xael's technical skills! Other than that, I don't feel as though they'd interact much, but if they did, I feel like Nausi would want to be their friend, just because she thinks they're cool! If they were friends, she would be really protective over him.

Faisal respects Xael and if they share any space, probably gravitates towards him if Zhuli isn't around. Faisal relishes in the fact that Xael just isn't a very demanding person and that he doesn't want to be here, either.

Asuka avoids Xael because he knows that he's loud and obnoxious and he can tell that Xael doesn't really want to be here, so he avoids them to give them some space. If Xael ever approached Asuka, though, Asuka would be happy to talk with him about whatever (particularly Xael's video games) because Asuka does find Xael legitimately interesting!

Xael gives Yumi a bad feeling (mostly due to his similarities to Sai). Something wriggling in the back of her mind, that makes her hands clench up whenever she's nearby them. She gives him a very wide berth whenever she can due to this.

Of course, given the type of world he grew up in, he knows he has to be very careful with who he trusts and shows kindness too. How else do you think he would come to trust and work with the Wizard so easily?

Dyvim confuses Hop for a type of measurement when discussing “How many Horned Limes are in a Hop?” in the Khonda Desert (which to be fair, I would be confused too)

Has a strong sense of justice, which apparently tends to be common among people on the spectrum.

Occasionally, others complain of how loud he is; volume control is something Autistic people can struggle with.

He occasionally misunderstands social queues or when is the right time to say certain things. Most notably, when he decides to outwardly say out loud to Zarozinia that he and the Wizard are her and Zaltanna’s allies in Fort Rachias in front of Umbra Legion soldiers. Of course, he’s worked very hard at trying to not do that over the years (he kinda has/had to in the environment he grew up in otherwise for…obvious reasons).

He may occasionally mutter his thoughts aloud without meaning to.

While before I headcanoned his aversion to meat and fish due to potential fear of eating his own kind, I think that he also has sensory issues related to those food groups, mostly smell (As seen in the siege of Fort Rachias and the Karamelle Prequest). As someone with my own sensory issues and trauma related to foods, it makes sense!

Dyvim’s special interest is in history, mostly with Khrysalis’s old times before the war and fall of Bastion. (I don’t think anyone else brings up the Old Times as much as he does.)

Oh Yumi? She’s so sweet I love her! When we meet up with Nene, it’s always really fun! I won’t lie, her not speaking worried me for a bit… I didn’t realize she didn’t and thought she hated me! I was so sad!

But now I know that she’s just like that, everything is better now! Even if she doesn’t speak with us, she’s still such a great listener. Sometimes I look over at her waiting for her to respond before remembering…

I just googled their German name and they are called "Blitzschnecken" which word by word translates to "lighting snails", isn't that the cutest? :D
