Do you think Kit and Ty are going to work out in TWP? I just want to believe they do but after the letter I'm not sure. As one of the biggest kitty fans I think you need to asure us

I have to tell you (as one of the biggest kitty fans ofc) that I never once believed that Kit and Ty wouldn’t be endgame. Before I take a bit of a closer look at the characters themselves, let‘s have look at it from a writer’s perspective:

1) Cassie has been hinting Kit and Ty since they met in that basement in Lady Midnight (which btw was 8 years ago?!). And throughout Lord of Shadows and Queen of Air and Darkness, it became really clear that she intends for them to be lovers.

2) Since Cassie has been hinting KitTy for over 8 years now and it is one of the fandoms most popular uncanon ships, it‘s not possible that she won‘t make them endgame (which would cause an uproar in the fandom)

As from the character perspective: Kit and Ty weren‘t ready for a relationship after QoAaD. They are both in a place where they need to understand who they are and properly process everything that had happened. And since the letter takes place shortly after QoAaD, it‘s only logical that Kit still has super strong feelings about everything that happened - he hasn‘t processed anything yet. So when Kit and Ty meet again after 3 years apart, I just know that they will finally be at a place where they understand each other and are ready for each other.

Thomas nodded. His stomach had feel as if it had been tied in knots of ice.

“We cannot pretend forever,” said Alastair. “Eventually the truth must be faced. All your friends hate me, Thomas, and with good reason.”

“No apology will make up for what I’ve done in the past,” Alastair continued. “And to make you choose between me and your friends only make it worse. So I will make the choice. Go back to the library. They’re waiting for you.”

“You followed me on patrol because you were worried about me,” said thomas. “You do realize- because you were there- that might have been why belial didn’t attack me? He always went after shadowhunters who were alone. But you were with me, even if I didn’t know it.”

“That’s just guesswork.” A vein pulsed in Alastair’s throat. “Tom, you patrolled at night because you like things that are dangerous and unhealthy for you. I won’t be one of those things.”

He began to turn away. Thomas reached out to catch at him, and the feel of Alastair’s shoulder under his feelings almost undid him. He had touched him, like this, in the sanctuary: had rested his hands on Alastair’s shoulders, letting alastair bear up his weight as they kissed.

“Don’t,” Alastair said, not looking at him. “It isn’t possible. It won’t ever be.”

I love that Alastair takes ownership and admits that his past actions were wrong. my man is always growing and we love him for that

as much as I want to support Alastair trying not to hurt Thomas, does he have any right making this decision for Thomas? I get why he doesn’t want to hurt Thomas or instantly get together. but in fairness, they already had their time apart. that’s why I think from the time of the two books: where they hardly talk, and then the big fight isn’t developed well. this would have been more serious if it were more (don’t have to date in secret but bloody fuck, have them communicate more)

I agree with needing time, developing their characters more, growing, realizing more things but I don’t agree with how it’s done. constantly in chain of thorns Alastair says how it’s not possible for them and how the merry thieves would all hate Thomas for it. but he never once asks Thomas what he wants. he just decides for Thomas. it doesn’t seem very Alastair like for me. he doesn’t seem the type to wish a decision over another being and having that control. well I mean, he did try to protect Cordelia so maybe it is a bit Alastair like but it still doesn’t feel in character for him

I just keep reading over this section and thinking about chain of thorns and I can’t help feeling that Alastair is making these demands. he kissed Thomas in the sanctuary, spent all that time with Charles instead, and is almost giving Thomas mixed signals in chain of thorns. he does tell Thomas it’s impossible for them but I don’t remember Alastair saying if they could be friends or if they were friends

and he talks about Tehran and even Thomas thinks “why does he act this way if he’s just leaving? does he wish for me to see more of him” or something close to that. Thomas is very confused and he’s not getting super concrete proof from Alastair

my problem isn’t with Alastair here, more with how it’s developed. I can tell he respects and admires Thomas very much and it doesn’t seem in character to basically say hey we can never be together I will make this decision for us so don’t try to ever have a relationship with me but I will be around you and we will lightly flirt and kiss but I will still make this decision for this

Thomas has every right and a say if he wants to be with Alastair. it’s kind of like it’s taken away from him????? or maybe I’m reading too much into this????

as I said before, I think they had a lot of growing to do before they got together but I would have had them have a more close relationship before Thomas found out about the academy days. because it’s like they don’t even get a chance at being close until the last half of chain of thorns. I get if CC wanted it to show that Alastair has some growth and doesn’t want to ruin Thomas. he also feels as if he isn’t enough at times and what he would hate the most is hurting Thomas in any way

and maybe I’m just assuming things but I feel what she was going for was hardly communicate and then BAM HEY THOMAS AND ALASTAIR ARE FRIENDS?????? WOW WHO KNEW BECAUSE I CERTAINLY DIDNT FEATURE THEM MUCH AND THOUGHT SMALL HINTS WOULD BE BETTER

I don’t know, maybe I’m just rambling nonsense but it’s always put me off when I get to that section. don’t get me wrong, thomastair is fantastic and I love them but I don’t like how it’s worded or developed. there was so much work that needed to be done not only as a couple, but as two separate people. Alastair needed his pov, Thomas needed more development and not having everything be about James

the emphasis on shipping in fandom culture is so wild to me to consider because like. there are certain things in jatp that I ship very emphatically, but I literally wrote myself into shipping them. when I was writing my first fics in the fandom, I didn’t plan for julie/luke/reggie or flarrie. I expected willex, because the show gave us that and gave me plenty of vibes to go “ok they like each other and would work together in the long term”. but especially with noncanon ships I always find myself stumbling into them as I plan or write a fic. I do sometimes set out to write a romance, but that’s usually when I’ve been in a fandom for a while and know “ok I like these dynamics and have had thoughts about shipping them in previous works, let’s dig into that.” and then I’m always writing like it’s a persuasive essay! like there are people reading who aren’t convinced about the ship, and I have to show my work.

even working with ocs it’s like, “ok I made this guy to be a friend for this character, but also I think that this particular dynamic would probably lead to romance and/or sex” (this thought brought to you by me knowing I haven’t touched my Jesse Lives au in forever) - actually I would say with ocs it’s most important because holy hell nobody is going to be automatically invested in your oc’s romantic or sexual life but you. you have to do a lot of legwork on that one unless your only intent is more of a reader insert vibe where ppl can imagine intimacy with their favourite character, which means they don’t care about your oc so much as they care about being able to project anyway. they already know why they’d be into this canon character. you don’t need to do anything there (which to be clear you do you, that just holds very little appeal for me for various reasons. live your dreams my friends)

and it’s just weird to me that people will write things where. it’s characters who don’t interact much. and then they don’t put any effort into making the reader ship it? they jump straight to “both characters are yearning and have been since they met” because they ship it, and they don’t require buildup, and I’m like “but how did you get here. why does it matter that they’re doing these things for each other.” and a lot of it tends to be a lack of deep characterisation, so it could be any two guys being gay (or. any ship. i’m maybe thinking about Certain Popular Gay Ships in fandom but also calling out baby me’s destiel obsession specifically. it’s fine no judgment but also fandom has a white gay man problem and that is a different post entirely) - and a lot of it also seems to be like. allosexual people (I assume from uhhh sexytime context clues) and definitely alloromantic people thinking that attraction alone is the legwork. like there’s nothing else to prove about a relationship. they like each other, boom, romance.

when you’re writing a romance, you don’t just have to have the characters woo each other (which. as a reader of both fic romance and original, published romances, let me tell you a lot of writers don’t even do that) - you have to make the ship woo the readers. draw us in. prove to us in word and action that these two care, make each other better (or worse, I write some toxic codependent shit too), that there is some reason to want them together and not settle for whatever preexisting dynamic they have. why does it matter that these people are in love? why are these obstacles worth overcoming? what does it add to a non-romance story to have this ship in it?

What is your unpopular shadowhunter opinions 👁️👁️

Okay listen, I don‘t truly know if it‘s an unpopular opinion since the fandom so rarely talks about it! My unpopular opinion is that I think it‘s the best if Livvy truly gets to rest in piece after TWP. To be honest, I don‘t even consider her being totally resurrected because I believe we will see her kind of losing her mind in TWP. And I think at the end of TWP, Ty will be able to let her go and say his final goodbye.

Absolutely. I hated Grace's poorly written redemption arc, but it still shocked me they didn't ended up together. I'm writing my ideal version of TWP in a similar way Cassandra wrote the Draco trilogy (the trilogy actually gave me the idea to do what she did), and one of the things that I noted down for the first time I tried to make a draft before the last TLH book was written was how I wanted to break the chain of couples getting spared. It are always the people who are single that die and the couples always live happily ever after. Having been apart of the fandom since City of Bones got translated into my language (Dutch), it has gotten a bit tiring. So when Christopher was killed despite him and Grace being set up to become a couple and live their happily ever after, I was shocked. For the first time, Cassandra had the balls to burn one of her ships down and it was gloriously painful. To me, Kit's death is amongst the best scenes in TLH. I didn't knew what to do, cry because Christopher was one of my favorites or just stare at the page with my mouth hanging open in shock. And yes, to my TWP readers, I won't be sparing ships! I'm too much of a pirate, my literary cannonballs will wreck a few.

I’m just gonna say it…

Christopher Lightwood was the worst, the saddest, the hardest death to get through that Cassie has ever written.

More than Livvy or George Lovelace. Christopher was the closest to the main characters, if not a main character himself, part of a solid group and actually had a future laid out for him (his inventions, Grace) and it was stolen from him.

Christopher Lightwood deserved better. Ave Atque Vale, Kit.
